Evaluation method

We recommend to look for your project at the end of the previous semester. Browse through the following pages

• lab webpages dedicated to projects
• Extraction list from the IS-A project porta l

These project lists are non-exhaustive and other projects can be found by contacting directly the labs of interest. Reserve your project as early as possible. Meet with the Professor in charge and define the objectives and work to be accomplished.

IMPORTANT : If the Professor proposing the project is not affiliated with Microengineering section, the project has to submitted for validation to [email protected]

Register on IS-A as soon as the portal is opened by the Academic Service. (this registration is official and mandatory, please respect the deadlines).

At the start of the project, the Professor in charge should give you a project description and objectives:

• Semester project template
• Semester project example

Project starting date:

• Beginning of the semester

Report hand in

• Spring semester : at the latest on Friday of the first week after the end of the semester
• Fall semester : at the latest on Friday of the second week after the end of the semester

Your mark will be transferred to SAC 15 days after the report has been handed in.

IMPORTANT: The supervising Professor should confirm the exact dates to hand in the report and the oral presentation at the beginning of the project.

An oral presentations of the work progress at mid-semester is strongly recommended. A final presentation at the end of the project is mandatory. The dates have to be defined with the Professor

The written report will be followed by an oral defense, organized by the Professor.

The section also recommends to complete the following form (which is a supplement to the evaluation) and to send the PDF to the Section for the student’s file.

The Forum EPFL’s presentations are the opportunity to introduce your company to a wide audience of students and graduates. Furthermore, workshops allow you to meet and share directly with students interested in your company.

Presentations

From 7th to 9th October, you will have the opportunity to introduce your company through presentations aimed at students. Future graduates will be there to receive information about your activities, your work methods, your goals, and your selection criteria.

Note: Conference rooms are equipped with beamers, laser pointer and with all the necessary audio-visual material (PC/Mac connectors).

Since 2013, the Forum EPFL offers an additional service allowing you to meet students in a more interactive environment. By booking a workshop, you will have 3-hour access to an entirely configurable room, suited to your requests and installed by our team.

Workshops differ from a presentation on the fact that the type and format of those interactive activities are entirely up to your own choice. We present you with the possibility to select students that will attend your workshops from our CV-library. You will also be able to choose the theme and configuration of the room thanks to this service’s great flexibility.

Workshops examples: Roundtable, presentation session, case studies, …

Opportunities are broad, don’t hesitate to share your wishes and needs with us and we will do all that is in our power to fulfill them! These sessions always have a great impact on students. They will allow you to get acquainted with students in the most optimal way.

Semester project SMA

There are several types of semester projects. They are described in the course descriptions: in Bachelor (12 ECTS), in  Master Math et Ing Math (10 ECTS) , or in  CSE (8 ECTS) .

Deadline for the written report of semester project (= submission of your report to the teacher)

Friday of the first week after the end of classes for spring project (= 7th June, 2024)

• Friday of the second week after the end of classes for autumn project (= 3th January, 2025)

How to find a semester/master project:

• Students in math and applied math: find an EPFL Professor in Mathematics (from the SMA). Students in CSE: find an EPFL Professor in Mathematics (from the SMA) or affiliated to the CSE master. The Professor (or MER or Bernoulli instructor) will supervise the project. Any teacher giving a course in our math study plan can be the supervisor of a semester projet.
• Register on ISA by the Friday of the second week of the semester.
• Sign the inscription form and ask your supervisor to sign it as well.
• Send back the signed form (pdf) by email to [email protected]  (BSc Math and MSc Math), [email protected] (MSc Ing Math) or [email protected] (MSc CSE) to obtain the SMA approval.

Templates for a semester/master project:

The SMA gives you one template to help you create your project (semester or master project, version March 2023) in LaTeX. You can either use it or create your own. The template gives you an indication as to what the SMA and professors are expecting.

How is a semester project organized?

In general, it requires about one to one and a half days of work per week during the semester. It is an opportunity to do a little research work within a chair and it is also a calling card for your future projects. It is therefore important to work hard, without neglecting your other courses.

Clarify the project with the professor from the beginning. Here are some points to keep in mind and possibly discuss with your supervisor:

• The project takes about 1 to 1.5 days per week.
• The work is supervised on a regular basis by a doctoral student or a post-doc from the chair.
• The follow-up is regular. In general, count on a half-hour interview per week.
• At the end of the project, a written report must be submitted in LaTeX (see also the dedicated website) . Turning in an intermediate report - even if it is incomplete - will facilitate your task and that of the supervisor.
• The professor often asks for an oral presentation. This is an important part of your project and may count towards the final grade.

Official deadlines:

• Registration : as for semester courses
• Submission of project to teachers
• Submission of grades to the SAC by the teacher
• You are not allowed to start the bachelor project if you have not passed the second year block.
• To apply for a project, you will have to register in the new system - information will follow in summer 2024.
• Professors do not always have enough staff to provide supervision, so sometimes they cannot offer you a project.
• The project can be done in the fall or spring semester. It depends on you and the availability of the professor.

What is a good recommendation system ? Ideally: Build and deploy your system Pragmatic: Transform past into future

Example • Members of program committee (20) want to evaluate the submitted papers (200) • Nobody has enough time to read all papers • Each researcher is assigned a subset of papers • A recommendation system uses the scores to find the opinion of all members about all papers

What is a good recommendation? It depends on the correlation Theory to the rescue

General recommendation model • nusers • k* nobjects • For each user and object: a grade • The grades of a user form his preference vector • The vectors of users form the preference matrix • Grades may be binary, discrete, continuous

How to account for the level of correlation? Compare with a perfect on-line algorithm

Ideal algorithm (k=1) • A playerp has to use ideas of (n/B)-1 other players to estimate her/his preferences • The rate of error for pdepends on the hamming distance between pand the other (n/B)players • This is with a constant factor of the diameter of these n/B players In the worst case, p cannot do better

Claim For every B-algorithm, there is some distribution of preferences such that (with constant probability)

For every player q in P, v(q)=v(p) except in S which is random

Proof (sketch) • Probes outside P provide no information to p • Probes inside P provide no information to pw.r.t S • Since p probes at most B objects and S contains D > 2B objects, there are at least D/2 objects for which p has no information • No algorithm can do better than guess preferences in S • The rate of error is at least D/4 and the diameter of P is less than D

Optimality An algorithm is (B,c)-optimal if for every input set of preferences

So what? The best we can do is find clusters of players that are - Small enough (small diameter) to provide “accurate” preferences And - Big enough to cover all objects • Practically speaking? • - Try different sizes of clusters

Optimality • Assume each player can evaluate B objects. • Given B, and the level of correlation among players, there is a minimum rate of error that can be achieved. • There is an algorithm that obtains a constant approximation of this error-rate, and each player evalutesO(B.Polylog(n)) objects.

Definition of Optimality • An algorithm is asymptotically optimal in terms of error rate, if for every player p we have: • |w(p)-v(p)| < min|P|>n/B-1cD(P) • Where c is a constant and D(P) is the diameter of set P. P can be any set of players with size at least n/B.
