21 Best Books Similar To The Selection

Last Updated on June 25, 2023 by Louisa

I absolutely love a good dystopian YA novel and I was a huge fan of The Selection when it first came out in 2012.

Kiera Cass’s writing style is gripping and animatic, making it hard to put her books down, which is probably why I’m always on the lookout for other books like The Selection .

The futuristic view she has of society being defined by numbers, and each number is defined as a class, is something I can totally see happening one day.

On top of that, the love triangles, romances and coming-of-age components made this novel one of my all time favorite fantasy romance books.

The Selection is the futuristic Cinderella story of the 21st century. But Kiera Cass is not the only literary genius to dominate this genre.

In fact, there are a ton of epic dystopian novels about class and romance that are worthy of any bookshelf.

If you’re a fan of Kiera Cass’s work and you’re looking for books similar to The Selection , then read on to see my top recommendations.

Summary of The Selection

what are books like the selection

Before I go into the best books like The Selection series, let’s quickly recap the general story. Don’t worry, I won’t reveal any spoilers if you haven’t finished reading yet.

Set in a dystopian world where society is divided into numbers, and each number resembles a class, The Selection series is about a world divided and tantalizing love triangles thrown in for good measure.

Number 1, is the most elite class, of Kings, Queens, and those in power. The lowest class, number 8, are the workers – those who man the kitchens of the silver palace and work as servants.

For thirty-five girls, The Selection is the opportunity of a lifetime. But not for our main character, America Singer.

They have the chance to escape a life of low status and to be swept up into the world of ballgowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the hand of handsome Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, The Selection is her worst nightmare. It means she can no longer pursue her secret love with Aspen, a level below her, as well as leave her home.

Living in a palace that is always threatened with attack and marrying the crown is not what America wants.

But when she finally meets Prince Maxon, she starts to question what it is she truly wants.

Geneticists are on the hunt for a miracle cure to rescue the human race. Rhine swears to flee after she is sold as a bride.

13 Books Like The Selection by Kiera Cass

If you loved The Selection as much as I did, you’re probably looking for more books like The Selection series by Kiera Cass.

Be it the romance, the competitions, or the dystopian world, this list has it all.

We’ll breakdown the similarities for you by type, so you know exactly what type of book you’re getting.

Some of these are pretty close to The Selection, while others only have similar themes.

I’ll do my best to tell you how each of these is worthy to be on a list of books like The Selection.

Competition Books like The Selection

The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins, Books like The Selection

1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Number of books: 4.

Most people are aware of the Hunger Games , but that doesn’t mean that everyone has read it.

In fact, if you’ve only watched the movies you are really missing out. They always say the books are better than the movies, and that is especially true here.

With the release of A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, you know have even more books to read in this amazing series.

The Princess Trials Cordelia K Castel, Books like The Selection

2. The Princess Trials by Cordelia Castel

Number of books: 3.

The Princess Trials is a little known series that you’ll likely have never heard of. It’s touted as The Selection meets The Hunger Games, and I’m happy to say it delivers.

Be aware that the first two chapters are rather cheesy, and almost feel like a direct rip off of The Selection. But as you get further in the story, you realize it is its own story.

Fans of The Selection will absolutely love this.

You can read my review of The Princess Trials for more info.

Spin the Dawn Elizabeth Lim

3. Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

Number of books: 2.

Spin the Dawn is a duology featuring a seamstress that enters a competition to become the emperor’s new master tailor.

Except only a man can hold this position, and Maia’s brother (who was invited) is not able to participate. Maia secretly takes his place and risks being found out at every turn.

Maia’s task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise.

You can read my Spin the Dawn review for more info.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

4. Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Number of books: 5 out of 7.

Red Rising is a sci-fi dystopian saga broken into two series. I’ve only read the first three books. The series is pretty amazing.

The only book that has competition overtones is the first book. It gave me major Hunger Games vibes, and is pretty awesome.

That being said, the romance is minimal, and you lose all connections to The Selection after Book 1. But that doesn’t mean you should pass it up. You won’t regret reading this series.

You can read my Red Rising review for more info.

Panic Lauren Oliver

5. Panic by Lauren Oliver

Number of books: 1.

I’d never heard of this book until I was researching for this article. Upon discovering it, I immediately bought it. It arrives in a few days.

For now, the best I can say is that it has a competition in it. It seems sort of Hunger Gamesish. I’m not sure if death is part of the stakes or not, but it sounds interesting.

Oh, and it looks like there’s a romance, so that’s always a plus. This is a stand-alone book, so if you’re not in the mood for a series, maybe this one is for you?

Ready Player One Ernest Cline

6. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Another dystopian future set to movie. This one was pretty great. Now, I’ve never read the book, but I adore the movie.

If you haven’t experienced either, you’re missing out.

The whole premise is that a genius game designer created a competition where the prize was sole ownership of his mega-million dollar company following his death.

The whole thing is a frenzied race with some love along the way.

Warcross Marie Lu, Books like the Selection

7. Warcross by Marie Lu

Another book I haven’t read. Sorry about that. But I’ve had this one on my shelf since publication day. I also have the second book. So I really need to get to reading this.

Warcross is another video game competition book, much like Ready Player One.

I don’t know much else about it, but I was intrigued enough to buy Book 2 having not read the first book. That or I have complete faith in Marie Lu to write an amazing story. She is pretty awesome.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

8. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Okay, so there’s more than a few of these books I haven’t read.

Caraval gets hyped in the YA Fantasy Addicts Facebook group all the time, and I just broke down and bought myself the first book.

Truthfully, I can’t wait to read it. It’s got a circus theme, which is why I haven’t read it up until now. I’m not huge on circuses. But there is a competition, and I adore competitions, so I’m game.

I don’t know how well it fits on a list of Books like The Selection, but I’ve got a pretty good feeling you’ll like it.

Dystopian Books like The Selection

The rest of these Books like The Selection don’t have the competition angle. Calling these books dystopian isn’t saying that the books in the previous section aren’t dystopian as a good chunk of them were.

I’m just meaning that they don’t fit the competition model, but still mostly take place in an alternate future America.

The Giver Lois Lowry

9. The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Giver is a book I read in High School and it’s a got special place in my heart even to this day.

It’s the first dystopian book I’d ever read, and I’ve gone back and read it a few times since. I don’t reread books very often, so that’s saying something.

The Giver features a coming of age selection process that singles out our main character for something extraordinary.

Divergent Veronica Roth

10. Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent is another well-known dystopian series thanks for the films, but the movies did so poorly they never made the final one.

The books are fantastic, though, and I strongly recommend them.

Divergent also holds on to that coming of age selection model where teens are sorted into various lifestyles that they must uphold for the rest of their lives.

It’s an odd twist, but an interesting take on what makes a perfect society.

The Maze Runner James Dashner, Books like The Selection

11. The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Number of books: 5.

With Maze Runner , there’s no competition and there’s no selection process. But there is a bit of a game in trying to escape the maze. Of course, that angle only works on the first book and the rest is about averting disaster from a virus.

Once again we deal with an alternate future America where things are drastically different than they are today.

With romance being more of an after thought, it’s debatable on whether this belongs on a list of Books like The Selection, but I think it deserves to be here.

Matched by Ally Condie

12. Matched by Ally Condie

The Matched series is a great set of books that I read a few years back. I never hear anyone talk about these books and felt like it could use a bit of love.

It’s more in line with The Giver than it is with The Selection per se, but since The Giver is similar, so is this.

The Society chooses who you’re to marry through a process called The Matching. Except that for a brief second, Cassia sees a second a second person and now she’s faced with an impossible choice.

Legend Marie Lu, Books like The Selection

13. Legend by Marie Lu

Marie Lu writes a lot of books like The Selection. And I don’t have any problem with that.

Legend tells the story of a boy and girl on opposite sides of the conflict. It’s a Romeo and Juliet story if you will, but set in a dystopian future America.

June thinks that Day killed her brother, and she’ll stop at nothing to catch him and bring him to justice. Only, they both discover that their government has been keeping secrets and they uncover the lengths it’ll go to keep them hidden.

Looking for more books lists?

Check out these 13 books like Scythe by Neil Shusterman .

While a lot of the same books are on that list, it also contains a few more. And of course, if you haven’t read Scythe that’s a great one and a most amazing series.

If you landed on this article, most probably you are still under the impression after “The Selection” by Kiera Cass and now looking for more books like “The Selection”.

It is quite an extraordinary book as it leaves you wanting more. It creates an insatiable hunger for more dystopic fantasy novels.

It is very intriguing, mainly because of the whole competition aspect and how the Rebels are never sure when they’re going to win or lose.

“The Selection” is rated four stars on Goodreads . This rating feels like an understatement since the book is so much better. Besides that, “The Selection” won the 2017 Young Hoosier Book Award.

If you are wondering how many books are in “The Selection” series, there are four books in the series so far. All of which are great books. There are also a few short stories, but they aren’t in the series.

Apart from The Selection, Kiera Cass has written some other great books, including “The Heir”, “The Elite”, “The Siren”, and “The One”. All these books share a common theme, they are all set in a fictional society, and all have the same genre.

Books To Read If You Liked “The Selection”

If you are wondering what to read after the Selection, you should consider these books:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Books like the selection

The book is about a girl called Mare who lives in a very strict society where people have different abilities.

This society is called “The caste system,” and the plot revolves around a forbidden love between a Red and a Silver.

Like The Selection, this book is dystopian with a lot of action. The plot is also quite thrilling to read.

Get yourself a copy of Red Queen from Amazon or order it from your local book store.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Thorns and Roses

“A Court of Thorns and Roses” is a book that, in my opinion, is better than “The Selection”. The author has taken the idea of “The Selection” and made it into a proper series.

The series is called the ACOTAR, and it’s about four girls.

The central theme of the series is love. And what better place to love than a society ruled by an immortal queen with many different queens living all around her?

Over the years, this book has gained a cult-like following for its amazing tales of impossible love stories.

In the end, after she finds the love of her life, she has to fight for her freedom. Like “The Selection” Kiera Cass series, the main theme of this book is love.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

To All the Boys I've Loved

This book is another great sequel to “The Selection”.

This novel is a good example of love and betrayal as it revolves around Lara Jean, a young girl with an innocent crush on her sister’s boyfriend.

It is a romance novel in a fictional society with strict rules and the love story between Lara and the two boys she loved.

In this book, much like “The Selection”, Lara Jean finds herself in a situation where she has to decide who she wants to be with.

Crier’s Wars by Nina Varela

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

The story is quite fast-paced and enjoyable to read. Visit Amazon and get your copy of “Daughter of the Pirate King” today.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Inheritance Games

The story’s main plot centers on Katniss Everdeen and her love interest Peeta Mellark as they enter the different games happening in Panem.

6 Books Like The Selection Series That You Will Love to Read

Looking for books like The Selection series? This series is just so fun to read as a great feel-good, guilty-pleasure, lighthearted reading option. Everything—from the beautiful dresses, to the dystopian setting, to the game show aspect, to the love triangles—makes The Selection the type of book that makes you feel happy even if you don’t quite know why!

Well, if you’re looking for other Young Adult reads that have a similar feel or similar aspects to The Selection , then these six books and series could be just what you’re looking for! There are a lot of books out there that claim to be like The Selection but are 1) boring, 2) way too angsty, 3) super, super, surprisingly dark, 4) terribly written, 5) just plain annoying. So when you’re trying to narrow it down to find similar books to read, it can be quite a challenge! But the books on this list consist of some books I personally really liked, as well as a few that you’ll see I included more because so many Selection fans absolutely adore them. So go ahead and start reading these—you’re sure to find a new amazing book to read!

1. The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

what are books like the selection

If you’re looking for books similar to The Selection , then The Crown’s Game could be a really good book to pick up! This book has more fantasy elements to it, but does feel very similar in some of its themes, in the competition aspect of the novel, and in its writing style.

Vika Andreyeva and Nikolai Karimov are two young enchanters in Russia. The only problem? There can be only one enchanter! If there’s more than one, then the magic of the land is divided…and this can’t happen as the Imperial Enchanter will need to draw on all the magic of the land in order to protect the tsar and the Russian people.

So what do you do when there’s too many enchanters? Luckily, there’s already a policy in place: initiate the Crown’s Game. Unluckily, this game ends with the victor becoming adviser to the tsar…and ends in death for the defeated enchanter!

Vika and Nikolai have honed their magical powers and trained their whole lives for this. But when the tsar initiates the Crown’s Game and they come face-to-face for the first time, Nikolai soon finds himself falling for his fiery opponent while Vika finds herself drawn to Nikolai’s magic. But when Pasha, the heir to the throne and best friend of Nikolai, falls for Vika without knowing who she is, everything becomes even more complicated! Will Nikolai be able to defeat the girl they both love? Will Vika find herself able to kill another enchanter in order to win the game?

This book sounds dramatic, and it definitely is, but it’s also a really fun book to read. The magic is delightful, the setting in Russia is so spectacular, and there’s a feeling of whimsy throughout that makes this lighthearted even as it touches on darker subjects. Like The Selection , the romance elements are sweet as the characters all grow to learn more about each other. And there’s a love triangle, of course! Actually, multiple love triangles. Or squares? But if you’re looking for a YA book like The Selection to enjoy, then grab a copy of The Crown’s Game and start reading now!

2. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

what are books like the selection

When you’re wondering what to read after The Selection series, Red Queen could be an excellent book to choose. It has a fun premise that sets up a world of division plus the main character is a commoner brought into a world of royalty, just like The Selection , which makes it a favorite read for many Selection fans!

In the world of Red Queen , the people are divided by the color of their blood: red or silver. Those with red blood are commoners, while the Silver are the ruling elite who are born with special abilities (like being able to control the weather, manipulate metal, or heal others with a touch).

Mare is a Red girl from a poor family living in the Stilts, until one day she finds herself called to work in the Silver Palace. But an accident at the palace leads to Mare discovering that, despite her red blood, she possesses a power like that of the Silvers! With her powers exposed to a large group of Silvers, the King and Queen declare she’s a long-lost Silver princess rather than admit that a Red has the power of a Silver. Now, Mare must live as a princess in the palace and not betray her hatred of all with Silver blood…

But when the Red Guard, a resistance group, contacts Mare and asks her to help bring down the Silver regime, she agrees and enters into a dangerous world of lies and betrayals. Will Mare be able to help the Red Guard? Will either of the Silver princes join her side and help her in the fight to end the imbalance of power? Or will it all end in tragedy for Mare and those she loves?

I first picked up this book because the premise sounds amazing (Special powers? Yes, please!). But I debated about putting it on this list, as I did enjoy the first book but as the series went on I was not as fond of the direction the other books took. If you plan to read these, just know that in a lot of places this is darker and more adult than The Selection series. There’s a lot of unhappiness and betrayal and angst that doesn’t get resolved and it passed my personal tolerance thresholds for things like this! That being said, I know tons of Selection fans who adore these books…so my recommendation is to give it a try, and if you like it then you have a whole series of fun books to read!

3. Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

what are books like the selection

If you’re looking for similar books to The Selection , then Spin the Dawn should definitely be on your radar. This book is an incredible YA fantasy with a strong female protagonist, a lovely love story, and even lots of beautiful dresses (I never say no to a beautiful dress 😉)!

Maia Tamarin has always dreamed of being the greatest tailor in the land. The only problem? She’s a girl, and girls can’t be master tailors. But when a messenger summons her ailing father to the court to be the next royal tailor, Maia decides to disguise herself as a boy and go in his place to compete to become the next tailor to the emperor.

Through a competition filled with backstabbing and lying tailors, Maia fights for herself and her family and soon comes to learn more about herself than she ever expected! But when the court magician, Edan, seems to see through her disguise as a boy, will all be lost?

Then, as a final test of her skill, Maia is set to the challenge of sewing three impossible magical dresses. Will she be able to create these dresses sewn with the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of the stars? Or will she die trying?

With Spin the Dawn , one of the most magical aspects of the book is the rich folklore and blending of cultures. You get a very solid sense of the world Maia lives in, even though it’s a fantasy world. Though there are snippets of the story that remind of other books and fairy tales (like the Mulan aspect of Maia disguising herself as a boy and taking her father’s place), in the end this is a vibrant book that creates something completely new and enchanting to read!

Spin the Dawn offers some of the competition aspects of The Selection , although this doesn’t end up being a big focus of the book. But it does have a female lead you will adore, descriptions of pretty clothes you will sigh over, a sweet romance, and a substance to it that makes this an altogether excellent read. If you liked The Selection , then there’s a pretty good chance you’ll love this book too!

4. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

what are books like the selection

If you’ve been reading in the world of YA for any length of time at all, then you’ve likely already read The Hunger Games . If you haven’t, then what are you waiting for? But this book makes it onto this list of books like The Selection for a few reasons, most notably the dystopian and game show aspects of the novel.

The Hunger Games is set in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, wherein a glamorous Capitol is surrounded by twelve outlying districts that get progressively poorer the further out you go. Each year, each of the districts sends one boy and one girl to the Hunger Games where they will fight to the death with the representatives of the other districts on live TV.

Katniss Everdeen is a girl from District 12, and one year she finds herself forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games. Will she be able to win and stay alive to return to her family? And if she does win, will she lose her humanity in the process?

This bestseller is similar to The Selection with the competition on TV aspect, although The Hunger Games shows a grittier reality than the glitzy one of Cass’ novel. Both novels are also located in a post-apocalyptic North America, and of course both have the ever-present love triangles! While the premise of The Hunger Games and the story line is far grittier, it is still an exciting read and is similar enough that any Selection fan should definitely add this one to their lists!

5. The Jewel by Amy Ewing

what are books like the selection

When you’re looking for a book like The Selection , you may also want to consider reading The Jewel . This YA book has a lot of similarities to The Selection , from class divisions to the glittering facades of the royalty, and a lot of Selection fans really love this series!

Violet is a girl from the Marsh, one of the poor areas of the city, and she’s been raised to be a surrogate for the royalty. Now that she is old enough, it’s time for her to go to the Jewel where she will be placed with a rich family who will buy her as a surrogate in an auction.

While the Jewel to most means wealth and opulence, Violet quickly learns about the cruelty and violence in the rich’s way of life here in the Jewel. And soon she begins to wonder what happens to the surrogates and where they are all disappearing to…and what can she do to avoid their fate?

This story has all the opulence and glittering wealth you could ever hope for, and the surrogates are treated somewhat like pampered pets from time to time (although they are also often abused in one way or another). This is a fluffy, light story despite the grim sounding subject, and of course there’s a forbidden romance! Because what would a YA book be without a forbidden romance?

On the surface, this book sounds quite a bit like The Handmaid’s Tale , but for young adults. However, if you go into this book with that in mind then you will be disappointed! It’s a lot more surface-level rather than deep, and I think there are some fairly large plot holes that aren’t ever explained (like, why can’t the rich have babies themselves anymore?). It wasn’t my favorite on the whole, but if you’re looking for a light, surface-level read to entertain you for a few hours, then this book is enough like The Selection that you may end up really enjoying it!

6. The Betrothed by Kiera Cass

what are books like the selection

The last book on this list is one I haven’t yet had a chance to read, so I can’t really recommend it one way or the other, but it’s Kiera Cass and sounds quite similar to The Selection ! The Betrothed is by Keira Cass and has a royal setting and sounds like it has a love triangle of sorts, so perhaps it’s like The Selection but with different characters? Here’s hoping!

books like the selection

The Selection has often been regarded as one of the most lighthearted and feel-good reads ever. From the dystopian settings to attractive dresses and the game show, this series will without doubt make you feel good and happy.

But what other books can you read to get the same feeling as when you read The Selection series? This article lists the top eight books like The Selection to read after the series.

Introduction to The Selection Series

Selection

First published in April 2012, The Selection is a novel series by Kiera Cass . The series comprises five books including The Selection, The Elite, The Heir, The One, and The Crown. The last two books are based on events that happen 20 years after the events in the first three books.

Four sequel short stories have already been released, with the first two, The Prince and The Guard, being told from the perspective of two supporting characters. The other two novellas, The Queen and The Favorite focus on two other supporting characters in the main series. The four short stories were later collected into a single volume called Happily Ever After, plus additional content and speeches.

According to Kiera Cass, the book series was inspired by Esther and Cinderella stories because she always thought about the difference between the two stories and wondered if the two characters were content with how their stories ended.

The series is based on a futuristic world where people are divided into several castes. The Ones comprise the most successful members of the society like royals and elites, while the Eights consist of the homeless, orphans, unemployable, drug addicts, and disabled people.

The Fives is made up of singers, artists, actors, actresses, dancers, etc. One of the main characters named America belongs to the Fives because she is a singer. When the time comes for the prince of Illea, Maxon Schreaves, to marry, he holds a competition called The Selection, in which young girls compete for the prince’s hand in marriage.

America, who already has a secret boyfriend, Aspen, ends up in the competition after her boyfriend broke up with him. She does well in the initial competition, earning herself a place in the palace where she has to compete against 34 other girls. While at the palace, America quickly makes both friends and enemies. But it’s her distinctive personality that grabs the attention of the people at the palace and the country at large.

America doesn’t want to marry the prince because she is still in love with Aspen, but she becomes friends with the prince after their first encounter in the garden. After a while, she develops feelings for the prince and starts to entertain the idea of marrying him. Later, Aspen goes to the palace as a member of the king’s guard. This leaves America confused even more, especially after Aspen sneaks into her room to see her.

Competitors are barred from having a romantic relationship with anyone else apart from the prince during the competition. Such a relationship is considered treason and its punishment can be as serious as death. As more competitors leave the palace, America ends up in the last group of six competitors called the Elite.

At this point, she realizes she has strong feelings for the prince. So, she ends her romantic relationship with Aspen. Instead of giving up, Aspen vows to fight even harder for America’s love. But America is already determined to marry the price.

Other main characters include Marlee Tames (member of the Elite), Celeste Newsome (member of the Elite), Kriss Ambers (member of the Elite), Elise Whisks (member of the Elite), Natalie Luca (member of the Elite), Clarkson Schreave (the king of Illea), Amberly Schreave (the queen of Illea), and America’s siblings (Kenna, Kota, May, and Gerad).

Who Should Read the Selection Books?

Read

The Selection series is meant to sweep every reader into the world of jaw-dropping fairy-tale romance and fierce intrigue. It’s also a mixture of forbidden romance, danger, and drama. The book series is a fun and thought-provoking dystopian series for kids and teenagers.

Concerning dystopian stories, The Selection series is quite friendly. As a parent, you need to understand that the romance scenes included in the book only lead to flirting and kissing. Furthermore, America is a good role model for your kids because she is a respectful daughter and a sensible heroine.

In the book series, America and other competitors severally make their self-esteem issues known. The books don’t have any major violent scenes, and the ones included are brief and less frightening. Also, the attempted rape of a female servant by an intruder is only discussed, not shown.

6 Dystopian Romance Books Like The Selection By Kiera Cass

novels like the selection

“True love is usually the most inconvenient kind.”

The first entry in her The Selection novella trilogy, Kiera Cass’ series is one of the most acclaimed Dystopian Romance stories from the 2010s. In the first entry of the series, forty-five women are given the opportunity to compete in The Selection, a competition that will see the winners swept up in the glitz and glamour of Prince Maxon’s court.

Readers follow America Singer, a woman who initially finds the idea of being selected a complete nightmare. Then she meets Prince Maxon, and quickly finds herself questioning the entire life she had previously mapped out for herself. If you loved the Dystopian Romance angle of Cass’ work, join us at What We Reading for the best romance books like The Selection!

The Siren – Kiera Cass

Where better to start with a list of the best books like The Selection than another one of the author’s most acclaimed works? In The Siren , Kiera Cass opens with a dreamy world of romance plucked straight from historical mythology.

In it, she introduces a siren named Kahlen who longs to be more than just a killer in the service of the sea. And when she meets the human Akinli, a boy who represents everything she ever wanted, she attempts to find a way of breaking the pair of them free for a life together. This standalone romance novel is an absolute must-read for anyone out there who is captivated by ancient Greek mythology as well as tales like The Little Mermaid!

Delirium (Delirium #1) – Lauren Oliver

Another acclaimed Dystopian Romance trilogy, Lauren Oliver’s Delirium kicks off with her 2011 Goodreads Choice Award -nominated debut. In an alternate America, love has been declared a dangerous disease, with everyone over the age of eighteen being forced by the Government to go through a procedure known as the Cure.

Lena lives in Portland with her family and, having seen love destroy her mother, is looking forward to receiving the Cure. But, when she meets the enigmatic Alex from the Wilds, she soon begins to feel a spark and starts to question what it might be like to fall in love.

Red Queen (Red Queen #1) – Victoria Aveyard

A Goodreads Award winner , Red Queen is the acclaimed 2015 Dystopian Romance book by Victoria Aveyard. In it, Aveyard introduces a world split between those with silver blood and those with red. The red bloods are the commoners, serving the silver elite who are blessed with supernatural powers.

Mare Barrow is a humble seventeen-year-old Red girl who begins working at the Silver Palace when she discovers she actually houses a power that could dismantle the delicate hierarchy her employers have attempted to preserve. Joining up with a Red Resistance group, Mare soon finds herself embroiled in a potentially deadly civil war of silver versus red, prince against prince and, potentially, herself against her own heart.

The Belles (The Belles #1) – Dhonielle Clayton

Dhonielle Clayton offers a similar book like The Selection with themes of love and competition in The Belles . Clayton whisks readers to the world of Orléans, a world where people are born grey, devoid of beauty. The Belles control all the beauty in the world, and only they are able to save the greys from being damned.

The most powerful Belles are chosen to work for Orléans’ Royal Family, and that is the situation Camellia finds herself in when she is invited to court. However, when Camellia begins to discover her powers are far beyond what she had first imagined, she finds herself thrust into a dangerous web of secrets and lies buried underneath the surface of the palace’s glitz, glamour and beauty.

Wither (The Chemical Garden #1) – Lauren Destefano

What would you do if you knew when you were going to die? In the first entry in her The Chemical Garden trilogy, Lauren Destefano introduces Rhine Ellery, a sixteen-year-old who knows she only has four years left of her life. With all females dying at 20 and all males dying at 25, the world has descended into anarchy, though Rhine is able to boast a life of glamour and decadence with her dedicated husband, Linden.

There are dangers everywhere though, and her father-in-law’s pile of corpses in the basement serving as test subjects for an antidote hint at more sinister secrets being in play. Torn between allowing the clock to tick down and forging a life of freedom, Rhine makes a desperate attempt to escape.

Sky In The Deep (Sky and Sea #1) – Adrienne Young

The first entry in the Sky and Sea series is far more Historical Romance rather than Dystopian however, for those who loved Cass’ snappy dialogue and vibrant storytelling, Adrienne Young’s Sky in the Deep is still one of the best books like The Selection.

Eelyn is a seventeen-year-old who has been trained her whole life to fight her clan’s greatest enemies, the Riki. Captured by the brother she thought dead, Eelyn is held in the Riki camp before being set upon by an enemy all had thought of as mere myth. Forced to grapple with the betrayal of her brother, the daunting prospect of uniting the clans against a common enemy and her growing feelings towards her brother’s friend, Fiske, Sky in the Deep is a part Vikings, part Wonder Woman tale that examines identity, loyalty and love.

“An engrossing tale reminiscent of Shannon Hale’s Princess Academy and Ally Condie’s Matched. Fairy-tale lovers will lose themselves in America’s alternate reality and wish that the next glamorous sequel were waiting for them.” — School Library Journal

“Cass’s immensely readable debut novel is a less drastic Hunger Games, with elaborate fashion and trappings. The fast-paced action will have readers gasping for the upcoming sequel.” — Booklist

“A cross between The Hunger Games (minus the bloodsport) and The Bachelor (minus the bloodsport), this trilogy launch is a lot of fun. Cass deftly builds the chemistry between America and Maxon, while stroking the embers of America’s first, forbidden love.” — Publishers Weekly

“Reality T.V. meets dystopian fairy tale in Kiera Cass’s delightful debut. Charming, captivating, and filled with just the right amount of swoon!” — Kiersten White, New York Times bestselling author of Paranormalcy

A Book That Was Like Putting on ‘a New Set of Glasses’

I consider its argument almost every day.

A boy reads a book in front of a fountain

This is an edition of the revamped Books Briefing , our editors’ weekly guide to the best in books. Sign up for it here.

The literary internet is full of lists that suggest books that will inform you about one subject or another—we just published one last week in this very newsletter (on what to read to better understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict). But recently, we decided to go a bit deeper and asked Atlantic writers and editors for books that changed how they think . We were looking for reading experiences that went beyond just adding knowledge—not a small thing, I know—and that gave readers a whole different way of perceiving the world. The entries were revealing and fun. Graeme Wood wrote about Steve Martin’s collection of stories Cruel Shoes and how it opened him up to the possibilities and joys of strangeness. Clint Smith explained how Meghan O’Rourke’s The Invisible Kingdom allowed him to appreciate what it might be like to experience life with a chronic illness. After reading James Nestor’s Breath , Olga Khazan realized she was breathing all wrong. I didn’t add my own contribution to this list, but I thought I would share it here, because I think about its argument almost every day.

First, here are four new stories from The Atlantic ’s Books section:

  • Six books that will scare you—and make you think
  • The tech that’s radically reimagining the public sphere
  • Who made the Oxford English Dictionary ?
  • A poem by Wisława Szymborska: “A Greek Statue”

The book that gave me “a new set of glasses,” as we put it in the prompt to our writers, was Neil Postman’s 1985 diatribe, Amusing Ourselves to Death . Postman was a media-studies professor at New York University who worried about the dominance of television and the way it was molding our public sphere, making political rhetoric more superficial and more concerned with entertaining and holding attention. He was basically taking Marshall McLuhan’s aphoristic insight that “the medium is the message” and applying it to an age of sound bites, televised debates, and pervasive commercials. The medium we use sets the limits for what we can think and how we can think, McLuhan established. So Postman argued that if our lives as citizens take place on television—a fast-moving, visual medium—then our politics will be molded to fit these biases (as Megan Garber succinctly put it in her insightful essay on the book, “There are dangers that can come with having too much fun”). Postman saw great peril in the degradation of discourse as society moved from print, a medium that demanded reasoned argument, toward one overwhelmed by what we would today call optics.

So why do I think about Postman’s book every day? Because his worries—and worse—have been borne out. God only knows what he would have thought of X (formerly Twitter). The way social media has warped our politics is just further confirmation of McLuhan and Postman’s point. If our public square is located on a medium that privileges emotional and bombastic speech, is performative, and leaves little room for nuance or deliberation, then we shouldn’t be surprised that American politics has landed where it has. Postman saw the rise of Ronald Reagan as the result of television’s pervasiveness; one could make the same case for Donald Trump and social media. Amusing Ourselves to Death was a cri de coeur about how the dominant technology of the day was affecting every aspect of our society. But for me, it also presented a new way of looking at how the tools we use to communicate can, in turn, shape us.

A Book That Changed How I Think

What to Read

We Want Everything , by Nanni Balestrini (translated by Matt Holden)

Admired by writers such as Umberto Eco and Rachel Kushner, this 1971 cult classic by Balestrini, an Italian novelist and poet, dives deeply into the long hours and stifling working conditions faced by employees at the Fiat factory in Turin that fueled strikes in 1969 that briefly paralyzed Italy and preceded the Years of Lead . The story is told from the perspective of a nameless factory worker originally from the south of Italy, whose narrative I compellingly transforms into a collective we in the novel’s second half as the employees band together in protest. The concern here is with power: who has it, who lacks it, and how the latter might wrest it from the former—in this case, by flooding the streets with the strength that can emerge from acting as a collective. “Now the thing that moved them more than rage was joy,” Balestrini writes triumphantly of the striking crowds toward the book’s end. “The joy of finally being strong. Of discovering that your needs, your struggle, were everyone’s needs, everyone’s struggle.” — Rhian Sasseen

Only Wes Anderson Could Have Adapted Roald Dahl This Way

“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” which Roald Dahl published in a 1977 short-story collection, has been cited by Wes Anderson as one of the early inspirations for his habit of nesting narratives inside one another. The tale is about a wealthy, narcissistic man who stumbles upon a handwritten notebook in the library of a friend’s country house and has the course of his life drastically rerouted. The story that Henry reads is a first-person account of an encounter with a performer, who in turn relays his own strange biography. Add to this Dahl’s own narration, as Anderson does, and suddenly you’re several layers deep into a grand metafictional mille-feuille.

The Egyptian Book of the Dead

Figurative art never looked so rebellious. Christopher Knight, Los Angeles Times Art Critic

Among their rigorous preparations for eternity, ancient Egyptians developed an intricate set of religious writings to help the deceased achieve a blessed afterlife in union with the solar god Re and the netherworld god Osiris. Known collectively as the Book of the Dead, these ritual spells were inscribed on funerary objects, including papyrus scrolls and linen mummy wrappings. This exhibition features a selection of the Getty's Book of the Dead manuscripts, which have never been on public view.

Scholastic Reverses Controversial Decision to ‘Segregate’ Diverse Books

what are books like the selection

  • Share article

Scholastic is reversing its decision to allow schools to exclude a collection of books about LGBTQ+ characters and Black characters when hosting its book fairs.

The children’s book publisher said that it was a mistake to segregate books about diversity and that, starting in January, the collection will not be offered at book fairs at all, according to a statement Scholastic issued on Oct. 25 that EdWeek obtained.

“We understand now that the separate nature of the collection has caused confusion and feelings of exclusion,” the statement says. “As we reconsider how to make our book fairs available to all kids, we will keep in mind the needs of our educators facing local content restrictions and the children we serve.”

Ellie Berger, Scholastic’s president, sent the letter to authors and illustrators, committing to finding “an alternate way to get a greater range of books into the hands of children.”

Scholastic initially attributed the optional collection to pending and proposed laws restricting what books students can and can’t read in 30 states, according to a statement released last week .

Four public school librarians and two literacy experts previously told EdWeek that they found the publisher’s initial decision to group those titles into an optional collection disheartening, especially considering that the company had previously spoken out against the proliferation of challenges and bans across the country, largely related to books about race, racism, and LGBTQ+ characters, which have been on the rise for the past two years.

The reversal of the decision was a step in the right direction, the librarians and experts said.

“Scholastic recognized that, as difficult a bind as this pernicious legislation created, the right answer was not to become an accessory to censorship. Scholastic is an essential source of knowledge and a delight for countless children,” said Jonathan Friedman, the director of PEN America’s Free Expression and Education program in a statement to EdWeek. PEN America is a free speech organization that tracks book bans nationwide.

“We are glad to see them champion the freedom to read.”

Royel Johnson, an associate professor of education at the University of Southern California, said that how Scholastic proceeds will determine its commitment to diverse books.

“In a time where access to BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ authors and stories is under constant threat and erasure, it is more important than ever for publishers like Scholastic to be firm on their commitments to DEI and not sway to political pressures,” he said. “This reversal is promising, but how they move forward is the real test.”

Books about diversity still available at Scholastic fairs

Last week, when Scholastic announced the decision to isolate the 64 titles related to stories about fictional Black characters such as Black Panther and activists such as Malala Yousafzai and Ruby Bridges, as well as LGBTQ+ characters, the company attributed the decision to “enacted and pending legislation in more than 30 U.S. states prohibiting certain kinds of books from being in schools—mostly LGBTQIA+ titles and books that engage with the presence of racism in our country,” according to that announcement.

Whether the 64 titles will be featured in book fairs once the optional collection is dissolved next January is unclear, but Scholastic is now figuring out how to make diverse titles available at book fairs without the additional collection, Anne Sparkman, the vice president of corporate communications for Scholastic, said in an update on Wednesday.

In a previous interview, Sparkman said even without the optional collection, Scholastic still offers books about neurodiversity, physical diversity, people of color, and by authors and illustrators of color throughout the fair.

“There is diversity of many different types of representation throughout the entire fair; it is not that all of the diverse titles are in this one collection,” she said.

“It’s just that this collection is the starting point with the [books] most likely to be legislated, and then it was filled out with additional diversity,” she said about the so-called “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice” collection.

How state laws can impact school book fairs

Despite Scholastic holding state laws and bills responsible for making the diverse collection optional, only three states had passed legislation that dictate the kinds of books schools can make available to students as of May 2023: Florida, Missouri, and Utah.

However, directly or indirectly, these laws have led to thousands of book bans and now are impacting a large publisher such as Scholastic, which runs book fairs in all 50 states, according to Kasey Meehan, the freedom to read program director at PEN America.

In most states, Scholastic was “accommodating something that hasn’t happened and probably won’t happen,” said Debby Vandersande, an elementary school librarian from Fairfax County, Va., who has been organizing Scholastic books fairs for 15 years.

“And in the places where there is legislation, the librarian can pull [a book] to protect themselves as they really need to, but it’s not the publishers and booksellers’ job to not provide it and to accommodate this type of censorship,” she said.

Missouri’s law, passed in 2022, has resulted in hundreds of book removals, both temporary and permanent. A provision in the law specifically bans any depiction or description of sexually explicit material, which can apply to graphic novels or picture books, too, depending on how districts interpret the measure. It can also potentially apply to book fairs, said Thom Bober, a librarian at Ralph M. Captain Elementary School in Missouri and the president of the Missouri Association of School Librarians.

However, librarians have done their due diligence to understand the law and remove from fairs any books that may fall under the ban, Bober said.

“School librarians are still the most responsible to make those clear decisions about whether a particular book is in violation of a specific law,” he said.

A step in the right direction

Four librarians EdWeek spoke with said they were initially concerned that making optional books representing historically marginalized students would send a message that censorship is the right decision.

All four said Scholastic’s reversal of the optional collection was a step in the right direction and should be attributed to the objections authors, illustrators, and librarians raised when they heard about the optional collection.

“The turnaround was swift, and I’m thankful to every author, illustrator, publisher, and librarian that spoke out against Scholastic’s decision to make this change happen,"Bober said.

“I’m glad the priority for students’ right to read a diverse selection of books exists.”

Vandersande and Amanda Jones , a librarian from Louisiana, said the “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice” collection did not need to be completely removed from book fairs.

“They could have just sent the case without it being ‘opt in.’ And nobody would have been alarmed,” Vandersande said.

“But it is best practice to not separate ‘diverse’ books because it makes them an ‘other.’”

The reversal shows that Scholastic is on the same page as librarians and is focused on making all kinds of books available to students, said Barbara Johnson, a librarian from Connecticut and a past president of the Connecticut Association of School Librarians.

“I hope all publishers stand with librarians and help combat legislative efforts to ban and restrict books,” she said.

“I think the lesson learned is that we’re all on the same team on getting books into the hands of children who need them.”

Some librarians may still distance themselves from Scholastic fairs

Jones had previously cancelled her school’s Scholastic fair following the announcement about the optional collection.

“It sent a message to me that Black voices need to be segregated and opted into, and that’s not something I want to be associated with,” she said.

Now, she’s waiting to hear from the authors and illustrators who were impacted before she makes a final decision.

Bober’s school has already stopped using Scholastic, because other vendors have been more responsive to the requests for diversity in their book fair offerings, among other reasons.

“As librarians begin to see the selections that Scholastic offers, and the diversity of that selection will be able to tell whether the company is providing a wide variety of books for all readers to choose from,” he said about future fairs.

Vandersande will keep using Scholastic for her school’s fairs, primarily because students in her district benefit from the large selection of $3 books they can buy there and the school raises enough money through profit sharing with Scholastic to buy books for any students that could not partake in the fair, she said.

She said she feels much better about the decision to partner with the publisher after it reversed its decision.
