A runtime error occurs while a program is running or when you first attempt to start the application. The error sometimes goes away on its own by simply reopening the app, but if not, there are a number of things you can try.

Depending on the situation, there are a few reasons why a runtime error might occur:
- There's a bug in the software.
- Memory or another system resource is in short supply.
- You've entered a foreign character into a text field, or performed some kind of action that isn't allowed.
The error usually appears as a small window, often with an indication of the program that's being affected, and sometimes with an error code and message. The prompt might also include a suggestion to contact a support team or administrator.
Here are some examples:
Paying close attention to what the error says, if possible, is the best way to address it. If the error is too general to diagnose right off the bat, then follow the below steps in order. If it's particular, however, and mentions something like Microsoft Visual C++Runtime Library, then that's the step you should start at.
How to Fix a Runtime Error
Runtime errors pop up in a variety of situations, so the possible fixes are all over the board:
Restart the computer . This is the likely solution if your computer suddenly feels like it's running much slower than usual.
Some runtime errors are caused by memory-related issues, and restarting is the quickest way to close everything that's currently running on your PC. This will free up those previously used system resources for the program that's throwing the error.
Update the program to its latest version. The runtime error might be caused by a bug that hasn't yet been patched in the release that you're using.
For example, some users report a runtime error when they use NVIDIA GeForce Experience to check for graphics card updates. In this scenario, you'd update the NVIDIA program.
You might need to re-download it from the software maker's site if there isn't a built-in method for checking for updates.

Top 7 Ways to Fix Runtime Errors on Windows 11
Do you keep getting runtime errors every time you launch specific programs on Windows 11? Well, then it’s certainly a cause for concern. If the standard fixes, such as restarting the program or your computer, don’t work, it’s time to dig a little deeper.
There can be several reasons behind a runtime error, ranging from damaged system files to improper program installation . Below are some effective troubleshooting tips you can employ to fix runtime errors on Windows 11.
1. Run SFC and DISM Scans
Damaged or corrupted system files on your PC can cause runtime errors. Fortunately, Windows includes some built-in tools that can help you easily repair those system files.
Before begin troubleshooting, it’s essential to ensure that filesystem on your harddrive or SSD isn’t suffering from any errors. For that, you can run an SFC (or System File Checker) scan on your PC by following the steps below.
Step 1: Right-click on the Start icon and select Terminal (Admin) from the list.

Another major cause, however, are missing or corrupted software libraries that allow programs to run on Windows. A “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error, for instance, points to a missing or corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ runtime installation. If you want to fix this issue, here’s what you’ll need to do.
Repairing or Removing a Microsoft Visual C++ Installation
The vcruntime140.dll file is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ software runtime library. - In the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable window that opens, select the Uninstall option and allow the process to complete. Once it’s finished, restart your PC and continue to the next section.
Installing or Reinstalling a Microsoft Visual C++ Installation
Without the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library installed, software that relies on it won’t work, so you’ll need to install it. You’ll also need to do this if you’ve removed a corrupted installation previously.
- First, head to the Visual Studio website to download the latest version of the software runtime library. Scroll down towards the bottom of the page, then select the Other Tools, Frameworks, and Redistributables category to view the available options. From there, select the correct CPU architecture for your PC (eg. x64 for 64-bit PCs, x86 for 32-bit PCs, or ARM64 for ARM-based devices), then select the Download button.
- Run the installer file (eg. VC_redist.x64.exe ) once the download is complete. In the installer window, accept the license terms by selecting the checkbox provided, then select the Install button to proceed.
- Allow the installer a few moments to complete. If it installs without any issues, select the Close button to close the window, then restart your PC.
This should, for most users, resolve the “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error on Windows 10 PCs. However, if the software you’re running requires an older version of the Visual C++ runtime (before 2015), you’ll need to download and install the older version instead.

Runtime errors come in different shapes and sizes, and they are notorious for interrupting your workflow. As such, here are some of the more common runtime errors, what causes them, and how to solve them if they arise.
What are Runtime Errors?
A runtime error occurs within a program while it's currently running. Runtime errors are defined by how they happen after the program has been compiled, instead of during the program's development. What's frustrating about runtime errors is that they can cause the program to shut down unexpectedly, and it's sometimes hard to pin down a singular cause.
The Different Types of Runtime Errors
Several different kinds of runtime errors can occur, so it's a good idea to learn what they are and what causes them. That way, you'll know exactly what to do when one rears its ugly head.
1. The Divide By Zero Error
Your computer does a lot of math while it's processing data, and that means that errors can crop up when performing even simple arithmetic. For example, one common runtime error is called a "Divide By Zero" error. This one is pretty on the nose; it happens when your computer is doing calculations and tries to divide a number by 0.
When you try to divide a number by 0, you will wind up with an undefined number. When a computer does this, it doesn't know what to do with the undefined number and causes the program to crash.
This is, unfortunately, not the type of error that you can solve on your side of things. If you identify a divide-by-zero error, the best thing to do is contact the software developer.
2. Errors Caused By an Incomplete Installation

5. The Non-Zero Exit Status Error
Software is composed of many lines of code. Every line needs to function properly to keep everything running smoothly. Unfortunately, there are times when a line doesn't work the way it's supposed to, which leads to errors.
One such error is called a non-zero exit status error. For different coding systems, each line of code is given an exit status, which is a number that tells if it was run successfully or not. If the computer ran the line successfully, then it gets a 0 as an exit status. If it gets between 1 and 255, then it's a failure. A good example is if you run a line that tries to access a file that doesn't exist on the computer, it will likely get an exit code of 1.

6. The Overflow Error
There are always limits when it comes to coding. For example, when trying to put a number to a variable (a.k.a, a property), there's a limit to how large that number can be. You get an overflow runtime error if you try to assign a larger number than that limit, which can cause the program to become unresponsive.
When you get an overflow error, you should start by checking if your software version is the latest one. If you're running the latest version, try reinstalling the software.

Note: On completion of this command process, you need to replace the C:\Repair Source Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source.
- Now, type sfc /scannow and hit Enter . (See Figure 13)
[Caution : Do not close Command Prompt until the process is 100% complete. Once the scanning process is finished, the scan results will be shown on the window .]

Fix 4: Free Unused GPU Memory
With a torch.cuda.empty_cache(), you can manually clear GPU memory in PyTorch. You should incorporate this function after batch processing at the appropriate point in your code.
