A runtime error occurs while a program is running or when you first attempt to start the application. The error sometimes goes away on its own by simply reopening the app, but if not, there are a number of things you can try.

Runtime Errors

Depending on the situation, there are a few reasons why a runtime error might occur:

  • There's a bug in the software.
  • Memory or another system resource is in short supply.
  • You've entered a foreign character into a text field, or performed some kind of action that isn't allowed.

The error usually appears as a small window, often with an indication of the program that's being affected, and sometimes with an error code and message. The prompt might also include a suggestion to contact a support team or administrator.

Here are some examples:

Paying close attention to what the error says, if possible, is the best way to address it. If the error is too general to diagnose right off the bat, then follow the below steps in order. If it's particular, however, and mentions something like Microsoft Visual C++Runtime Library, then that's the step you should start at.

How to Fix a Runtime Error

Runtime errors pop up in a variety of situations, so the possible fixes are all over the board:

Restart the computer . This is the likely solution if your computer suddenly feels like it's running much slower than usual.

Some runtime errors are caused by memory-related issues, and restarting is the quickest way to close everything that's currently running on your PC. This will free up those previously used system resources for the program that's throwing the error.

Update the program to its latest version. The runtime error might be caused by a bug that hasn't yet been patched in the release that you're using.

For example, some users report a runtime error when they use NVIDIA GeForce Experience to check for graphics card updates. In this scenario, you'd update the NVIDIA program.

You might need to re-download it from the software maker's site if there isn't a built-in method for checking for updates.

This is a good time to also check for Windows updates .

Fully delete the program, and then reinstall it . An installation that doesn't quite finish properly can be the cause of the runtime error.

The update procedure in the previous step might have done this, but if you're still getting the error, it's time to completely delete the program and confirm that it's being reinstalled from scratch.

Some uninstallers don't do a great job at erasing every remnant of the file from the registry and hard drive. Try a dedicated program uninstaller if the normal tool from the app maker doesn't fix the error.

Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package . If your error says something about the runtime components of the Visual C++ libraries, this is likely solution.

Use SFC scannow to repair corrupted Windows files . The SFC command is executed in a Command Prompt window, and might be the fix for the runtime error.

Run System Restore to return your computer to a previous state. This could fix the runtime error is if it's caused by the Windows Registry being corrupt.

Reinstall Windows . If focusing on a specific program didn't fix the runtime error, or if it's interfering with the way Windows works as a whole, resetting is your last option.

How Programmers Can Prevent Runtime Errors

If you're the software maker, GeeksforGeeks suggests several ways to avoid runtime errors . Follow that link for a deeper dive into the different types of runtime errors, with examples of why they're happening and what you can do to prevent them. Some fixes include avoiding variables that haven't been initialized, and not declaring too much stack memory.

With Internet Explorer shut down for good , you won't be able to update the browser to try and fix the problem. However, if you insist on using IE rather than moving to a new web browser, check your Adobe Acrobat plugin as it may contain an error. Update Acrobat Reader if possible, or reinstall it and try opening the PDF again.

First, perform a clean boot of your Windows machine and see if that takes care of the problem. If not, you'll need to use an uninstaller program to try and get rid of the software.

First, verify that the problem is Chrome by attempting to visit the website giving you the error in a different web browser. If Chrome is the problem, clear out the cookies for that site in Chrome, restart the browser, then visit the website again. If the problem persists, check Chrome for updates .

How to Fix a “vcruntime140.Dll Is Missing” Error on Windows 10

You can always count on Microsoft for cryptic error messages

Author avatar

If you’re seeing a missing DLL error on your Windows PC, it’s usually a sign that something has gone wrong. It could be that your software is corrupted and needs reinstalling, or it could point to deeper issues with your PC, such as corrupt system files or a stubborn malware infection .

Another major cause, however, are missing or corrupted software libraries that allow programs to run on Windows. A “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error, for instance, points to a missing or corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ runtime installation. If you want to fix this issue, here’s what you’ll need to do.

how to fix a runtime error

Repairing or Removing a Microsoft Visual C++ Installation

The vcruntime140.dll file is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ software runtime library. Provided by Microsoft, this library is used as part of the process of compiling software (created in C++ using Visual Studio) to run on Windows PCs. If the file is missing, the “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error will appear.

To fix this issue, the first thing you should attempt is to repair the Visual C++ installation on your PC. If that doesn’t work, you should remove it entirely by following these steps, then proceed to the next section to reinstall it.

  • To repair a Visual C++ installation, you’ll need to open the Settings menu. To do this, right-click the Windows Start menu and select the Settings option.

how to fix a runtime error

  • In the Settings menu, select Apps > Apps & features . On the left, you’ll see a list of installed apps. Scroll through the list or use the search bar until you find the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable option listed. If it’s missing, proceed to the next section.

how to fix a runtime error

  • If the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable option is listed, however, select it, then select the Modify option.

how to fix a runtime error

  • In the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable window that opens, select the Repair option.

how to fix a runtime error

  •  Allow the process to complete, then restart your PC. If you still see a “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error, you’ll need to remove the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime entirely and reinstall it. To do this, select Uninstall > Uninstall in the Settings > Apps > Apps & features menu.

how to fix a runtime error

  • In the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable window that opens, select the Uninstall option and allow the process to complete. Once it’s finished, restart your PC and continue to the next section.

how to fix a runtime error

Installing or Reinstalling a Microsoft Visual C++ Installation

Without the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library installed, software that relies on it won’t work, so you’ll need to install it. You’ll also need to do this if you’ve removed a corrupted installation previously.

  • First, head to the Visual Studio website to download the latest version of the software runtime library. Scroll down towards the bottom of the page, then select the Other Tools, Frameworks, and Redistributables category to view the available options. From there, select the correct CPU architecture for your PC (eg. x64 for 64-bit PCs, x86 for 32-bit PCs, or ARM64 for ARM-based devices), then select the Download button.

how to fix a runtime error

  • Run the installer file (eg. VC_redist.x64.exe ) once the download is complete. In the installer window, accept the license terms by selecting the checkbox provided, then select the Install button to proceed.

how to fix a runtime error

  • Allow the installer a few moments to complete. If it installs without any issues, select the Close button to close the window, then restart your PC.

how to fix a runtime error

This should, for most users, resolve the “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error on Windows 10 PCs. However, if the software you’re running requires an older version of the Visual C++ runtime (before 2015), you’ll need to download and install the older version instead.

You may also be able to fix the issue by removing and reinstalling software that has an older version of the Visual C++ runtime installer included. This is common in larger software bundles, such as games, that require multiple runtime libraries to work correctly.

By reinstalling software that’s coupled with an older Visual C++ runtime installer, the specific version of that library required to run the software should automatically reinstall itself and resolve any lingering issues.

Running Windows Update

The Microsoft Visual C++ runtime receives security updates through Windows Update, just like other major Windows services. If you’re having trouble with a “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error, it might be worth checking for any recent updates using the Windows Update service.

While this is unlikely to fix a broken installation, installing new updates could repair your installation automatically. You can check for new system updates in the Settings menu.

  • To access this, right-click the Start menu, then select the Settings option.

how to fix a runtime error

  • In the Settings menu, select the Update & Security option, then select Windows Update in the next menu.

how to fix a runtime error

  • Select the Check for Updates option to search for new updates. If there are updates pending, select the Restart now option instead.

how to fix a runtime error

Windows will check for updates and install any that are currently pending. Once installed, you’ll need to restart your PC to ensure that they’ve been correctly applied. You should then check your software to see if the missing runtime issue is resolved.

Downloading DLL Files Online

If very specific error messages like “vcruntime140.dll is missing” start to appear, you might be tempted to source the file online to fix it. Various DLL download sites exist, allowing you to quickly download the missing file to resolve the issue.

how to fix a runtime error

We would recommend avoiding sites like these, however. DLL files are crucial elements of the Windows operating system that allow software to interact with more restricted Windows components. Unless you absolutely trust the source, it’s usually a better idea to remove and reinstall the entire Visual C++ runtime library instead.

This should resolve the issue for most users, but if you’re still having issues, you could source the file from another PC in your network as a last resort.

Keeping Windows 10 Maintained

The steps above should help you to fix a “vcruntime140.dll is missing” error on your Windows 10 PC. In most cases, repairing the installation or reinstalling the Visual C++ redistributable should fix the issue, but you may also need to look at removing and reinstalling any affected software .

A missing DLL file is usually a sign of a PC that’s having some issues, which is why it’s important to keep up with regular PC maintenance. You can do this by keeping Windows updated to ensure you have the latest bug fixes, as well as running regular malware scans to remove malware that could leave your PC at risk.

What Are Runtime Errors, and How Do You Fix Them?

Runtime errors can really hamper your productivity, but how do you stop them from popping up? Here's a guide about the most common kinds.

Don't you hate when you're trying to start a program and get an error message that says "Runtime Error"? Unfortunately, despite regularly annoying people, the dreaded runtime error doesn't do a great job explaining itself and what happened exactly.

Runtime errors come in different shapes and sizes, and they are notorious for interrupting your workflow. As such, here are some of the more common runtime errors, what causes them, and how to solve them if they arise.

What are Runtime Errors?

A runtime error occurs within a program while it's currently running. Runtime errors are defined by how they happen after the program has been compiled, instead of during the program's development. What's frustrating about runtime errors is that they can cause the program to shut down unexpectedly, and it's sometimes hard to pin down a singular cause.

The Different Types of Runtime Errors

Several different kinds of runtime errors can occur, so it's a good idea to learn what they are and what causes them. That way, you'll know exactly what to do when one rears its ugly head.

1. The Divide By Zero Error

Your computer does a lot of math while it's processing data, and that means that errors can crop up when performing even simple arithmetic. For example, one common runtime error is called a "Divide By Zero" error. This one is pretty on the nose; it happens when your computer is doing calculations and tries to divide a number by 0.

When you try to divide a number by 0, you will wind up with an undefined number. When a computer does this, it doesn't know what to do with the undefined number and causes the program to crash.

This is, unfortunately, not the type of error that you can solve on your side of things. If you identify a divide-by-zero error, the best thing to do is contact the software developer.

2. Errors Caused By an Incomplete Installation

Sometimes, things go wrong during the installation process. There are plenty of reasons why a program won't install properly, and when this happens, it can lead to issues.

Sometimes, certain files aren't installed, or the installation package is buggy. In any case, if the program isn't installed properly, certain files that the program needs to run might not exist, leading to a runtime error. In that scenario, the best thing to do is to reinstall the program or try finding a different version of the installation package.

3. Logic Errors in the Software's Programming

Regardless of how good a programmer is, there's always the occasional error. A logic error is a type of runtime error that could point to a mistake in the coding.

Related: Types of Programming Errors and How to Avoid Them

Hot take: coding is sort of complicated. There are thousands upon thousands of characters that need to be typed correctly for a program to run properly. If there are any typos in the code, it can lead to unexpected outputs. Because of this, the program can be buggy or even crash altogether.

The best thing to do is to contact the software developer. You should also check if you are running the most up-to-date version of the software. A later version might have the problem ironed out.

4. Errors Caused by Memory Leaks

Another pretty common runtime error is a memory leakage error. When a program is running, it uses up some of the RAM. Then, when the program is terminated, it communicates to the system that it's finished and releases that RAM so that other programs can use it. However, sometimes a program won't do this, and programs keep using new RAM until it runs out.

Related: How to Troubleshoot Low RAM or Memory Leaks in Windows

Imagine an apartment complex with 10 apartments, eight of which are occupied. If three tenants leave without telling the apartment management about it, the office believes eight apartments are still occupied when only five are. Then when three more people want to move in, the office turns away one person on the assumption there's no room for them.

A memory leakage can lead to RAM issues, sluggish performance, and program crashes. If this happens, a good solution is to restart the computer. This will clear out all of the RAM altogether.

5. The Non-Zero Exit Status Error

Software is composed of many lines of code. Every line needs to function properly to keep everything running smoothly. Unfortunately, there are times when a line doesn't work the way it's supposed to, which leads to errors.

One such error is called a non-zero exit status error. For different coding systems, each line of code is given an exit status, which is a number that tells if it was run successfully or not. If the computer ran the line successfully, then it gets a 0 as an exit status. If it gets between 1 and 255, then it's a failure. A good example is if you run a line that tries to access a file that doesn't exist on the computer, it will likely get an exit code of 1.

Related: Ways to Check if a File Exists Using Python

6. The Overflow Error

There are always limits when it comes to coding. For example, when trying to put a number to a variable (a.k.a, a property), there's a limit to how large that number can be. You get an overflow runtime error if you try to assign a larger number than that limit, which can cause the program to become unresponsive.

When you get an overflow error, you should start by checking if your software version is the latest one. If you're running the latest version, try reinstalling the software.

7. The Segmentation Fault Error

Segmentation fault errors are the most common type of runtime error. There are certain rules that a program needs to follow when accessing and writing to memory. When some of these rules are broken, you run the risk of getting a segmentation fault error.

There are multiple ways that a segmentation fault error can happen. Some common causes are:

  • when a program tries to write to read-only memory
  • when a program tries to access memory that it's not allowed to access
  • when a program tries to dereference freed memory or NULL pointers
  • when a program tries to access more data than it's allowed
  • when a program tries to write a location that it's not allowed to

If you run into one of these issues, Stack Overflow has an excellent list of solutions you can try, so be sure to give it a look.

A Lot of Runtime Errors in the Wild

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to runtime errors. The list goes on, as there are numerous errors and even more ways to cause them. The best thing to do is to study more runtime errors, how to identify them, and how to solve them; it can help prevent a lot of trouble.

How to fix Windows runtime errors

If you're getting a runtime error code and error message (e.g., "Runtime error 75 path/file access error"), skip to the runtime error listing for a listing of runtime error codes and errors.

Microsoft Windows Runtime errors can be caused by a lot of different problems with the computer. Follow the steps below to help find and fix all Runtime errors.

Windows Runtime error

Conflict with TSR or another running program

If you're encountering a runtime error message in Windows, verify a third-party program or TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident) by end tasking all open programs.

  • How to remove TSRs and startup programs.

If, after end tasking all TSRs, you still have problems in Windows 95 or Windows 98, check autoexec.bat and config.sys for programs loading that are causing your issue. Then, temporarily disable these programs by renaming the files. Follow the instructions below for more information.

  • Boot to MS-DOS.
  • Once at the MS-DOS prompt, type:
  • Once completed, reboot the computer.

Software issue

If your issue persists, the program, utility, or game causing the runtime error may have issues. Verify through the developer's website that all available updates or patches are downloaded and applied.

If no patches or updates are available, uninstall and reinstall the program that is causing the issue. If you are having a runtime error in your operating system , reinstall the operating system.

Add-on, plug-in, or other extra software

Many runtime errors are also caused by other add-ons , plug-ins , or extra software installed on the computer. If you have any additional software associated with the program causing the error, update or uninstall it, and see if that resolves the issue.

Computer virus

Because computer viruses and malware can tamper with the system settings or memory, it can cause a runtime error. If you are currently running a virus protection program on your computer, ensure it is fully updated with the latest virus definitions.

If you do not have a computer virus protection program, we recommend one be purchased or that a demo be temporarily downloaded to scan your computer hard drive for viruses.

Memory issue

Finally, if you have followed all the above recommendations and are still getting runtime errors, you may be encountering a hardware or memory related issue. We recommend you first contact the developer of the program causing the issue for any possible solutions. If no solutions are found, we recommend you contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer for additional recommendations or service.

Which runtime error do you need to fix

The solution to runtime error messages in Internet Explorer is different depending on the type of runtime error that you receive.

This article provides a resolution only for the following error message:

Error A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line: line number Error: nature of script error

Screenshot of the Runtime Error message box.

Because this type of error message doesn't apply to you, you can prevent it from appearing. To do so, follow these steps in Internet Explorer:

Select the Tools button, and then select Internet Options . Or, press ALT+T, and then press O.

In the Internet Options dialog box, select the Advanced tab.

Select the Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable script debugging (Other) check boxes. Then clear the Display a notification about every script error check box.

Screenshot of the Internet Options window. Under Advance tab, the three check boxes are set.

Select OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

Test the resolution

To see whether the problem is fixed, open or refresh the Web site that caused the error.

If the Web site displays and works correctly, and if the runtime error message doesn't reappear, then you're finished. You may still receive a notification about the Web page error in the Internet Explorer status bar. However, you can just ignore the Web page error. If this computer has multiple users, you might also need to sign in as another user and repeat these steps for other users.

If the Web site still doesn't display or work correctly, the problem may be with the Web site itself. But to test it, either you must have access to another computer, or your computer must be set up for multiple users. If you have access to another computer, try to view the page from that other computer. If your computer is set up for multiple users, sign in as another user, and then try to view the page again.

If the Web site still doesn't display or work correctly, the problem is likely with the Web page itself. So you might want to contact the owner of the Web page to ask them to fix the problem.

What causes runtime error?

Reasons for the runtime error vary on different applications. If you are not sure what causes the error actually, pay attention to the content below.

Runtime error is associated with hardware or software that stops applications and programs to run properly. Programming glitches are not rectified in the process of application development. You are running two incompatible software programs. Other factors like memory leak, programming errors, incomplete installation, and corruption Registry can also trigger the runtime error.

Other factors like memory or storage space not enough, incompatible applications, errors with malware software or advertisement software, outdated or damaged hardware can also lead to the c ++ runtime error.

Types of runtime error

  • AppModel runtime errors 57, 87, 490: According to user reports, this error shows up every time a Windows 10 app is installed, reinstalled, or updated via Microsoft Store.
  • NVIDIA GeForce Experience C++ runtime error: It may appear when you check for Nvidia graphics card updates.
  • Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library: This error pops up every time the computer is turned on.
  • Runtime error 1004 in Excel: This error will interrupt Microsoft Excel users. It is related to Microsoft Visual Basic.
  • .Net runtime error 1026: The error message “The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception, Exception code c00000fd” comes with this error. When the error occurs, you may find that the application often crashes or refuses to start while trying to run it.
  • Atibtmon.exe runtime error: The error usually occurs when you disconnect or unplug the AC power cord from the Windows 10 device.

What effects does the runtime error bring?

The runtime error can give rise to information missing of the current operated files, file errors or corruption with files and the failure of certain features that you are using. Different from stop error, runtime error will not cause a program to stop working in most cases.

Therefore, the question that fixing runtime error to avoid the consequences described above becomes an important issue. Here are some available methods for you and you can take them as reference.

Solution 1: Temporarily Disable Microsoft Services

As mentioned earlier, two incompatible applications run simultaneously can lead to the run time error. The application occupies too many system resources so that there are not enough resources for the new app.

However, you are not sure what applications on your computer causing the error. So, you can close unnecessary application to fix the error. Utilize Windows Task Manager to close all the unnecessary programs, and then reopen the application that you would like to run.

Here are specific steps for you.

Step 1: Press Windows plus R keys to open the Run window. Type msconfig in the dialog window, and then click the OK button to continue.

What is a runtime error, and how to fix it

Runtime errors can be frustrating and confusing for computer users, especially when they interrupt an otherwise smooth workflow. Whether you’re working on a complex software application, using a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel , or browsing the web, you might encounter a runtime error. In this guide, we’ll discuss what runtime errors are, their most common causes, and how you may be able to fix your runtime error.

QUICK ANSWER

Runtime errors are problems that occur when a specific application encounters a problem and crashes. There are many possible ways to fix runtime errors, including restarting your computer, updating or restarting your application, and closing other applications that may be conflicting.

A runtime error is a type of computer error that occurs while a program is running, hence the term “runtime.” Unlike compile-time errors, which the compiler detects before a program is executed, runtime errors occur while a specific program is running. These errors often lead to a program crashing or other unexpected behavior, frustrating developers and users. There are many different causes of runtime errors, but these are some of the most common:

Common causes of runtime errors

  • Memory leaks: A memory leak occurs when a software program drains your PC’s RAM (random access memory). This can happen when using software that hasn’t been updated, including running on an OS (operating system) that hasn’t been updated to its newest version.
  • Memory issues: Memory-related problems can also lead to runtime errors. This includes issues like attempting to access an area of memory that is not allocated or trying to free memory that has already been freed up.
  • File not found: A runtime error can occur if a program tries to access a file that doesn’t exist or is located in a different directory. This is a common issue in applications relying on external data files. To fix this issue, ensure that whatever file a program requires access to is present and is in the right location.
  • Function calls: Incorrect usage of functions or calling functions with the wrong number or type of arguments can lead to runtime errors. This is particularly relevant in programming languages that have strict type-checking rules.
  • Encoding errors: An encoding error can occur when utilizing software that renders a file (like a video or image) to convert it to a different file format. Because the encoding process is highly resource intensive, an error sometimes occurs when the program uses more power than a system can handle. The user may encounter messages such as “encoding overloaded” or “encoding failed.”

Dealing with runtime errors can be challenging and tedious, but they aren’t insurmountable. Here are some steps you can take to fix runtime errors effectively:

1. Reset your PC

Sometimes, runtime errors can be caused by temporary glitches or conflicts in the operating system or system resources. Something as simple as just restarting your computer can help to clear these issues. It’s a simple step but can often resolve minor runtime errors.

2. Close other programs

Running multiple programs simultaneously can strain your computer’s resources, leading to runtime errors. To free up system resources, close unnecessary applications or background processes. This can help ensure that the program encountering the runtime error has enough resources to operate correctly and is often the solution for the error.

3. Update the application

Software developers regularly release updates to fix bugs and address compatibility issues. Check if an update is available for the application triggering the runtime error. Updating the software to the latest version may resolve the issue, as developers often include bug fixes in their updates.

4. Reinstall the application

If updating the application doesn’t solve the problem, consider reinstalling it. This can help replace any corrupted or missing program files that may be causing the runtime error. Be sure to uninstall the existing version of the software before reinstalling it to ensure a clean installation.

5. Seek outside help

If you cannot resolve the runtime error alone, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Depending on the nature of the error and the software involved, you can consider the following options:

  • Contact support: Many software developers offer customer support services. Visit the developer’s website or documentation to find contact information and reach out for assistance.
  • Online forums and communities: Online forums and communities dedicated to specific software or programming languages can be valuable resources. You can describe your issue and seek advice from experienced users or developers who may have encountered similar problems.
  • Check event logs: In some cases, the Windows Event Viewer can provide additional information about the error, which may be helpful when seeking assistance from others or troubleshooting further.

Remember that the specific steps to fix a runtime error may vary depending on the software, operating system, and error message you encounter. It’s essential to approach each issue methodically, starting with the simplest solutions and progressing to more complex ones if necessary. Additionally, maintaining a backup of your important data and regularly updating your software can help prevent runtime errors from occurring in the first place.

In conclusion, runtime errors can be a frustrating aspect of computer usage, but they can often be resolved with patience and the right approach. By following these steps and seeking assistance when needed, you can effectively tackle runtime errors and enjoy smoother computing experiences.

how to fix runtime errors

When you try to launch a software and a runtime error occurs, it can be confusing knowing what to do next. Various computer issues can cause runtime errors. Although there are times when closing and reopening the app eliminates the error, it doesn’t go away sometimes. Runtime errors are notorious for disrupting workflows and can get in the way of a productive day.

In this article, we’ll walk you through what a Runtime Error is and the various types of runtime errors available. We’ll also provide the best solutions to fix runtime errors when they occur.

In this article

Part 1. what is a runtime error.

A runtime error occurs when an application you’re using produces a wrong output or crashes. Sometimes, these errors prevent you from using the program or your PC altogether. Runtime errors differ from errors that occur when the program already launches; they occur when you try to launch the program.

There are cases when all you need to do is refresh your PC or the application, and the runtime error disappears. However, there are occasions when you need to take an extra step to fix the error. For example, when runtime errors in programming occur, a window appears displaying the error code and more information about the affected program. In addition, before a runtime error occurs on your PC, it gives you signs like your PC’s performance is slowing down.

Part 2. Examples of Runtime Errors

There are runtime errors in programming and runtime errors in Internet explorer, which differ. Some examples of runtime errors in programming include:

  • AppModel runtime errors 57, 490, 87: this type of error appears whenever a Windows 10 app is updated, installed, or reinstalled through the Microsoft Store.

Part 3. Causes for Runtime Errors

If you’re wondering what causes runtime errors, there are many reasons why they occur. The reason for the error usually depends on the application and the action you’re trying to take. Runtime errors are usually associated with software or hardware that prevents programs and applications from running correctly.

Runtime errors in Internet Explorer occur when the website utilizes an HTML code incompatible with the web browser functionality. However, there are various reasons for runtime errors in programming. Depending on the situation, below are some reasons why a runtime error might occur.

  • The developers didn’t rectify a programming glitch during the application development. Unfortunately, this means that there’s a bug in the software.
  • You’re trying to run two incompatible software programs.
  • An incomplete installation can also trigger the runtime error.
  • Memory or another system resource isn’t available.
  • You inputted a foreign character into a text field or performed an action that the PC didn’t support.

Often, when this error occurs, it appears as a small window that indicates that the program is affected. Sometimes, the prompt also suggests contacting an administrator or the support team.

Part 4. Types of Runtime Errors

To fully understand what a runtime error entails, it’s essential to look closely at the different types of runtime errors. Below we’ll explain them in detail; let’s take a look.

1. Logic Error

No matter how good a developer is, the occasional error still occurs. For example, a logic error usually happens when the programmer enters the wrong statement into the application’s source code. Sometimes, developers make the mistake of leaving logical values to revert to true, and this type of error falls under that category.

2. Memory Leaks

A runtime error could pop up when a program is draining your PC’s Random Access Memory (RAM). Most times, this type of error comes from unpatched software, like when you fail to update the operating system to the new version.

3. Division by Zero Error

The computer performs a lot of math when it is processing data. This means that errors can appear when it is performing the simplest arithmetic. For example, division by Zero error is usually associated with Excel Workbooks. It occurs when your computer performs calculations and tries to divide a number by zero.

Additionally, when formula inputs in a spreadsheet are left blank, it could result in this runtime errors. Therefore, you need to format the cell formulas in a specific manner to get the right result.

4. Undefined Object Error

This error occurs when the program tries to call a function for a PHP or JavaScript object that doesn’t have a value. The error also occurs for deeply nested objects. To put it in simpler terms, the code cannot find a property or read it because it is either buried many levels deep within the code or doesn’t exist.

5. Input/Output Device Error

Input/Output device error usually occurs when there’s an issue with your PC’s read/write function. There are various reasons for this error, including outdated drivers, faulty USB ports, device malfunction, and OS incompatibility. When this runtime error occurs, users get a prompt that informs them that the device isn’t accessible, making it difficult to encode or transfer files into it.

6. Encoding Error

Another top runtime error that commonly occurs is an encoding error. It frequently happens when you’re rending a file. An example is when you’re trying to convert a video file to a usable or accessible file format. This error occurs due to the nature of the encoding process and the number of resources it requires.

7. The Segmentation Fault Error

You’ll find segmentation fault errors among the most common types of runtime errors. This is because there are specific rules you must follow when accessing memory and trying to write into it. When you break these rules, then it will result in a segmentation fault error. This runtime error occurs when a program tries to write a read-only memory or access a memory it isn’t allowed to access.

8. The Non-Zero Exit Status Error

Every software consists of many lines of code. Each line is essential to ensure the software functions properly and continues to run smoothly. However, there are times when a line doesn’t work the way it is programmed to, resulting in an error. Such an error is known as a non-zero exit status error. Every line of code features an exit status, a number that tells whether it runs successfully. For example, 0 means the computer ran the line successfully, while any number between 1 and 255 means failed.

Part 5. How to Fix the Runtime Errors in Internet Explorer

To check whether this fixes the problem, open the website that caused the error again. The runtime error is gone if the website opens easily and without errors. You might receive a notification about an error in the status bar, but you can ignore it.

Part 6. How to Fix the Runtime Errors in Programming

Most times, what causes runtime errors in programming are bugs that the programmers knew about but found difficult to fix. Sometimes, the problems are memory leaks or the application requires some system resources to run correctly. Below are some solutions you can explore to fix the runtime errors in programming.

Fix 1: Restart Your Computer

This technique is quite common because of how effective it is. Most times, simply restarting your computer will fix any error, including runtime errors. When your PC suddenly feels like running very slowly, this solution would work to speed things up.

If you’re experiencing runtime errors due to memory-related issues, restarting your computer closes down everything currently running on your PC. Additionally, it will free up the used system resources for the program causing the error.

Fix 2: Update the Application or Program

Sometimes, runtime errors pop up from an error in the program or a bug in the version you’re using. That’s why the best fix is to update it or manually download the latest version. Chances are that the bug has been patched in the new release, and you have to update your application. An example is the NVIDIA GeForce Experience; when you update the NVIDIA program, you’ll no longer experience a runtime error using the software.

Fix 3: Close Other Applications or Program

Sometimes, runtime errors occur when two incompatible programs are running. Due to this, the other program conflicts with the one you want to run. In such a case, the other software utilizes too many system resources, leaving very little for the application you want to launch. To fix this runtime error in programming, close applications you don’t need and then try opening the program with the runtime error again.

Fix 4: Reinstall the Application

The chances are that the software is corrupt and needs to be reinstalled. Another reason you may be experiencing runtime errors is due to incomplete installation. The update procedure might have resulted in this error, and in such a case, you have to delete the program to reinstall it from scratch. Ensure you save important files before you uninstall your app.

Fix 5: Install the Latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistribution Package

Some people experience runtime errors in programming after updates to Windows 10/11. Maybe the popup window showing the error message appears every time you turn on your PC and returns when trying to shut it down. Most times, the problem occurs due to a software program or maybe the Visual C++ libraries’ runtime tools being missing.

In such a case, you must install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ . Note that you have to uninstall the package already on your PC before you can proceed to download the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistribution package.

Fix 6: Run the Application in Safe Mode

Safe mode is a unique diagnostic mode in the Windows Operating System that’s useful for solving software and hardware issues. Any program you run in safe mode only uses the bare minimum to ensure your PC works excellently. This mode is useful and helps fix most operating system errors. When a runtime error appears, you should try running the application in safe mode. Follow the steps below to run the application in safe mode.

Step 1: Right-click the start button and then click Settings from the menu that appears.

Step 2: Now, navigate through the windows that pop up to Update & Security. On this tab, select Recovery and then select Restart now to proceed.

Step 3: This will redirect you to the Windows Recovery screen. Click Troubleshoot to begin and select Advanced options from the options provided.

select startup settings to start safe mode

Step 4: Now, choose Startup Settings and hit Restart to proceed.

Table of Contents

What is Runtime Error?

A runtime error is a problem that occurs when the user runs or opens the software. This error is different because it appears not when the program is running, but when the program is about to be launched.

Usually, this error appears with a small popup window containing details and code that can be used for troubleshooting.

In some cases, the appearance of this error also causes system performance to seem to slow down . Before you handle it yourself, it is highly recommended to ask the IT team for help.

What are the Causes of Runtime Error?

As we saw above, they are due to hardware or software problems.

In most cases, the reason can be – lack of storage space, operation of incompatible programs, viruses, presence of malware, etc.

A dialog box appears on the screen stating that there is a runtime error, but it does not provide enough information to clear it.

It may cause a loss of data or cause an irreparable error in your system.

How to Simply Fix the “Runtime Error” on Windows

Here we will share the best and simple methods to fix the runtime error on windows.

1. Turn off the TSR Program

Runtime errors can occur due to conflicts with third-party programs and TSR.

TSR stands for Terminate and Stay Resident , which is a set of programs that are loaded into memory at startup and will become active when needed.

When there is a conflict between a third-party application and TSR with Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime Library, a Runtime error message appears.

To fix this, we should try turning off the TSR and other programs loaded at startup and see which causes the error to appear.

Follow these steps:

  • Open task manager (CTRL + Shift + Esc)
  • Go to the Startup tab
  • Disable all TSRs and startup programs
  • Restart the computer
  • After the computer turns back on, try to check if the runtime error is gone.
  • If the runtime error has disappeared, then you can reactivate the TSR and the startup program that was disabled one by one.
  • Check which TSR or startup program caused the error.
  • Permanently disable the program.

2. Clean Boot

The best solution to fix Runtime errors in Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7 is to enter clean boot mode. This mode is a state where Windows runs only with the basic services it needs.

The way to clean boot in Windows can be by entering Safe Mode or manually. To enter the safe mode you can see how here:

Especially to solve Runtime errors, we have to enter clean boot manually. Follow these steps:

1. Login with an administrator account.

2. Press Windows key + R> type msconfig> OK.

3. After entering the System Configuration window click on the Services tab> check the Hide all Microsoft services option> click Disable all> OK.

Clean Boot

5. Restart the computer.

After the computer starts , we have to enter the clean boot. See if the Runtime error is gone. If it’s gone, it means that one of the services or startups we turned off earlier was the cause.

3. Basic Steps to Solve Them

This section includes basic and easy steps to solve r6025. It occurs when an invalid function is performed by a program on a virtual member function.

The compiler then generates an error while building that particular program.

  • Start with the combination “Ctrl + Alt + Del” and go to your task manager to check for running programs.
  • Press the ” Processes ” tab to get the list sorted by ” Username “.
  • These problems are caused by the running program.
  • You can use the “ End task ” option and end all programs until you find the one that produces the error.
  • You should check for the runtime error after closing each program.
  • Once you have identified the program, go to Control Panel and uninstall that program and its files.
  • Then you can reinstall the latest version of that software or program.

4. Fix r6002 on Windows

This is a frequently observed type. The cause is the program binding to a non-existent program.

At this time, the compiler cannot run the program and displays an error on the screen.

To solve it, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Open it ” Control Panel “.
  • In the ” Programs ” section, select the option ” Uninstall a program “.
  • Click on Installed Microsoft Visual C ++ Packages.
  • Uninstall these packages.
  • After uninstalling, restart your system.
  • When the system boots, go to the Microsoft website, and from there you can download Visual C ++ packages.
  • Install the packages and verify that it needs to be removed.

5. Steps to Fix on Windows r6034

The reason can be corrupted files, device driver problems, missing files, viruses, etc.

In this case, the compiler is unable to run the program because of bad files that interfere with the running program.

It is very tricky to find the particular error that created the program.

  • Start your system correctly.
  • After startup, open the “ Start “ menu.
  • In the search box, type ” MSConfig ” and press the ” Enter ” key.
  • A dialog box will appear on the screen named System Configuration.
  • In the “ General ” tab, click on the “ Selective startup ” option.
  • Uncheck the option ” Load startup items “.
  • Check the ” Hide all Microsoft services ” box under the ” Services ” tab.
  • Click the “ Disable All ” button.
  • After clicking “ OK ” restart your system.

6. The Most Common Way to Fix these Problems: ( Microsoft Visual C ++ )

They usually terminate the program and cause a lot of problems for users. You can try to resolve them by starting your system in safe mode.

When you start the system in safe mode, it opens only the files necessary for the full functioning of the operating system, putting aside other unnecessary files during boot.

Follow the steps below on how to start your system in Safe Mode:

  • Restart your PC and keep pressing the F8 key while booting.
  • A new window called ” Advanced Boot Options ” will appear on the screen. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to enter the safe mode.
  • Select the “Safe” mode and press the ” Enter ” key.
  • Wait for the system to boot into safe mode.

7. Error Resolution with Windows Explorer

Registry errors:

They tend to create problems within the system while the program is running, and furthermore can lead to “Runtime Error”

Windows keeps a log of all necessary drivers, and a corrupt registry file can make it difficult to run a program.

Missing files:

When files required for execution are missing, moved, or deleted, the program cannot be compiled and this will result in “Runtime Error”.

Obsolete drivers:

Make sure your drivers are up to date in order to avoid any issues while performing any task or program.

Hope you can now fix the Windows runtime error and find out the reason for its occurrence.

But it is suggested to perform disk fragmentation at regular intervals to avoid such errors. This will keep your system running efficiently and quickly.

How to Fix “RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory”?

  • The CUDA architecture in PyTorch leverages the power of GPUs to speed up computations by using the parallel computing power of NVIDIA.
  • Deep learning models are trained using GPU memory, which stores model parameters as well as intermediate activations.
  • It’s really frustrating to get errors such as RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory. Fortunately, we have some fixes to make this error go away.

How to Fix “RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory”?

In the research and development community, PyTorch has become a popular deep-learning framework. In the case of large models or datasets, users may encounter the frustrating “RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory” error.

This error indicates that the GPU’s memory has been exhausted, preventing deep learning from being completed.

In this article, we will tell you about some of the needed steps that may help you resolve the RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory. Thus, without any further ado, let’s get started with the guide.

Content Table

What is the CUDA Out of Memory Issue?

What is the CUDA Out of Memory Issue?

It is an integrated hardware and software technology developed by NVIDIA and stands for Compute Unified Device Architecture.

In this way, NVIDIA’s GPU can be used beyond image processing to develop C-compilers and to perform other operations. GPUs are, therefore, used for machine learning and other purposes by some program developers.

If you use PyTorch, Stable Diffusion, or another machine learning library, you may encounter the CUDA out-of-memory error.

What Causes ‘CUDA out of memory’ in PyTorch?

What Causes 'CUDA out of memory' in PyTorch?

Python might show an error message “CUDA out of memory” for a variety of reasons. Here are a few of the most common causes:

  • Generally, this error occurs when the batch size is too large when you train your model. To process more data simultaneously, you must increase the batch size, which requires more memory on your GPU. You’ll see the ‘CUDA out of memory’ error if your GPU cannot store the entire batch.
  • You may also see this error if you use a large model architecture. When large models consume your GPU’s memory, your GPU’s performance can be severely hindered.
  • Your model can quickly run out of memory if you fail to free up memory after each iteration. Utilize PyTorch’s memory management functions to keep system memory under control and proactively release variables once they are no longer required.
  • PyTorch keeps track of all variables that require gradients by default. In the case of big models with large batches, this logging will quickly consume all GPU memory.
  • Programs written in PyTorch can sometimes leak GPU memory, meaning they allocate GPU memory without releasing it after they are no longer required. Your GPU may run out of memory at some point, causing the error ‘CUDA out of memory’ to appear.

With the ‘CUDA out of memory’ error now identified, let’s look at solutions that may help you fix it.

How to Fix “RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory”?

Here are some easy methods using which you can get rid of the RuntimeError: CUDA out-of-memory issue:

Fix 1: Changing the Batchsize

Reducing the batch size is the best option if you are using some pre-existing code or model architecture. Once you have cut the file in half, keep chopping it down until you are not getting the error anymore.

Even if you set the batch size to 1, if it still doesn’t help, other problems may need to be solved before larger batch sizes become effective.

In PyTorch, gradient accumulation is achieved by not calling optimizer.step() and optimizer.zero_grad() after every forward pass. A backward pass occurs once every ‘n,’ where ‘n’ is the number of steps to accumulate gradients over):

Fix 2: Use Mixed Precision Training

When using mixed precision training, your model can be trained with lower-precision data types, reducing the amount of memory it uses.

Modern GPUs feature more power than ever before, so mixed precision training uses this power to boost the performance of models without compromising accuracy.

While reducing memory usage and maintaining neural network performance, it utilizes 32-bit and 16-bit floating point types to maximize speed and efficiency.

Numerous parts of deep learning models, like activation functions, are not sensitive to precision. To reduce the memory footprint and speed up execution time without compromising model quality, half-precision calculations (float16) can be used.

With PyTorch’s torch.cuda.amp package, mixed precision training is relatively simple. In this package, amp.autocast is a Python context manager that allows the user to specify how precise operations should be performed.

You can reduce the memory usage of your model by as much as 50% by using half-precision (FP16) instead of single-precision (FP32). There may be convergence issues with PyTorch batch-norm layers.

To resolve this, ensure that your batch norm layers are float32 and remember to cast between float32 and float16 between each layer’s inputs and outputs when necessary.

Fix 3: Use a Smaller Model Architecture

Choosing a model architecture with a small memory footprint is crucial. Models with more layers or complex structures typically consume more memory during forward/backward passes if they have many layers or structures.

Using a smaller model architecture may be a good idea if you often run into ‘CUDA out of memory’ errors.

Performance is not necessarily compromised when you go for a simpler or smaller model. There is a wide variety of memory-efficient, high-performance models available online.

In terms of computational resources and model accuracy, MobileNet and EfficientNet provide a good trade-off. By using depth-separable convolutions, such architectures can reduce the number of parameters that can be trained without sacrificing accuracy.

Fix 4: Free Unused GPU Memory

With a torch.cuda.empty_cache(), you can manually clear GPU memory in PyTorch. You should incorporate this function after batch processing at the appropriate point in your code.

So, that’s how to fix the RuntimeError: CUDA out of Memory. It’s our hope that this guide has helped you. But suppose in case you have any questions or doubts regarding this topic on your mind, comment below and let us know.
