MagSafe cases and sleeves for iPhone

MagSafe cases and sleeves contain magnets that align iPhone ( supported models ) with MagSafe chargers and battery packs. You can even hold and use iPhone while it’s charging. See MagSafe chargers and battery packs for iPhone .

iPhone Leather Sleeve

When iPhone Leather Sleeve covers your iPhone, you can do the following without removing the sleeve:

Get the current time: If the clock window is dark, raise iPhone or tap the window.

See the charging status: When you charge iPhone, the clock window indicates the battery level and its charging status.

See who’s calling: When a phone or FaceTime call arrives, the caller’s name or number appears in the clock window.

To answer, remove iPhone from the sleeve, then drag the slider.

Or without removing iPhone, use your AirPods or Apple Watch (sold separately) to answer the call. (FaceTime video calls are answered with your video paused.)

Make an Express Transit payment: Position the rear top of iPhone within a few centimeters of the contactless reader at the transit gate. A confirmation message appears in the clock window. See Pay for your ride with Express Transit .

If your iPhone is in Express Cards power reserve mode, confirmation messages don’t appear in the clock window.

If you carry a separate transit card in iPhone Leather Sleeve, your transit card is used for payment when you position the lower front of iPhone near the contactless reader.

When your iPhone is in iPhone Leather Sleeve, you can also use “Hey Siri,” your AirPods, your Apple Watch, and CarPlay to make calls, ask questions, and do tasks that don’t require you to look at or touch the iPhone screen.

A Comprehensive Guide What Is MagSafe

A Comprehensive Guide: What Is MagSafe?

If you’re anything like most people, you’re probably a fan of any new advancements that help you use your phone better and more often. Whether it be wireless charging or a handy new app, your tech gets better and better every day, and you don’t want to miss out on the latest and greatest. One of the coolest new technologies to pop onto the scene is MagSafe, a useful new technology by Apple that could change the way you use your phone.

By now, you may have noticed  an array of MagSafe accessories  appearing on the shelves. But are they worth the hype? Depending on how you use your phone, the answer is probably yes. In this guide, we’ll go over everything you need to know about MagSafe so you can unlock more features and use your phone to its fullest.

WHAT IS MAGSAFE?

MagSafe is a proprietary standard of wireless power transfer and accessory attachment developed by Apple. To put it simply, it’s a feature that facilitates wireless charging and accommodates a ton of cool new accessories that make your phone even more functional. This is all made possible through a complex design featuring magnets, shields, coils and sensors. Hence the name  MagSafe.

If you’ve ever owned an Apple laptop, the MagSafe concept probably isn’t entirely new to you. That’s because Apple originally introduced it with the debut of the 2006 MacBook Pro. When you go to charge your MacBook, the charger attaches quickly and seamlessly to the port on the side of the laptop via a magnetic connector. This design is safer than a standard connector because it easily disconnects if pulled.

However, the MagSafe that integrates into the iPhone is different and more advanced than our laptop chargers. Apple announced the new version of MagSafe in October of 2020, alongside the release of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. Beginning with that generation, all Apple phones are made with the built-in MagSafe magnet system, which serves as both a safe and fast way to charge your phone wirelessly as well as a handy mounting system for accessories, like our  magnetic card holders.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the main benefits of MagSafe for iPhone users.

Faster, Safer Wireless Charging

Wireless charging is a convenient way to power up your device without the need to fuss with messy cables. By now, you may have already experienced some wireless charging capabilities through a Qi charger, which is compatible with iPhone 8 and newer. Although MagSafe-equipped phones are still compatible with the Qi standard, the technology improves upon wireless charging in a few ways.

  • Perfect Alignment  — The magnetic design ensures that your phone is perfectly aligned with the coils inside, which speeds up power transfer and makes it more efficient. No need to fuss with positioning.
  • Faster Charging  — While Qi is currently limited to powering iPhones at a rate of 7.5 watts, MagSafe can  charge your phone twice as fast  at a rate of 15 watts. Who doesn’t want faster power-ups?
  • Safer Charging  — Previously, there was no safe way to charge phones so quickly without overwhelming the battery or electronic components inside the phone. The MagSafe design makes it possible to charge fast without risking damaging the device.
  • More Convenience  — Convenience is another huge pro of MagSafe over previous wireless charging technologies. With typical wireless charging, you can’t use your phone while it’s on the charging dock. Since MagSafe chargers securely attach to your phone, you can still use your phone while it’s charging wirelessly.

Accessories

In addition to a whole new world of wireless charging, MagSafe also introduced Apple users to a cutting-edge mounting system for accessories. Because it equips your phone with magnets, MagSafe lets you easily snap on accessories such as card holders, wallets, phone grips, mirrors, ear pods and so much more. It also provides a new way to mount your phone in the car or on your bike. MagSafe mounts securely attach to your phone, so you don’t have to fuss with frustrating clips or sticky pads.

If you’ve already made the leap to iPhone 12, you want to make sure you’re using your tech to its fullest. With the integration of MagSafe, you’ll be able to wirelessly charge your phone faster than ever before while decking it out with amazing accessories that make your life a lot easier. Be sure to invest in a MagSafe-compatible  iPhone 12 case  so you get all these amazing features without sacrificing style or protection.

HOW DOES MAGSAFE WORK?

All wireless charging works with the help of a technology known as inductive charging. It uses electromagnetic induction — the production of electricity via magnetic fields — to transfer energy from a coil inside the phone to the phone’s battery. In the case of MagSafe, all you have to do is connect the back of your phone to the charger and the magnets will get to work powering up your phone.

MagSafe implements a wound wire coil design that’s brand-new and cutting-edge in the industry. This coil is modified to work with magnets but still accommodates Qi wireless charging. But the coil isn’t the only thing that makes MagSafe so amazing. In fact, the back of each MagSafe phone contains seven layers of components that are hard at work.

The internal charger contains multiple layers of shields, magnets and sensors that help facilitate charging and send your phone important information about accessories.

  • Shields  — The copper-graphite and nanocrystalline shields capture magnetic flux and allow the phone to safely charge at a faster rate without damaging the batteries or the electronics inside.
  • Sensors  — The sensors within the MagSafe component sense magnetic field strength and respond instantly, ensuring more responsive and efficient charging.
  • Magnets  — The magnets are what make the MagSafe so special. They allow you to precisely align your device for efficiency and let you connect cool extras securely without the need for clips, clamps or adhesives.

DO YOU NEED A MAGSAFE CASE?

Now for the question you’ve probably been wondering: Do you need to buy a new phone case to use MagSafe? Well, it all depends on the material, thickness and other features of the case. According to Apple, a case must be about  2 millimeters thick to work with MagSafe  . Since some materials and styles may not work with MagSafe, it’s best to invest in a MagSafe-compatible case from Case-Mate.

You’ll  find a MagSafe case that suits your style  in Case-Mate’s huge selection. Each one of these MagSafe phone cases is designed in accordance with Apple’s accessories guidelines to ensure that they work properly and don’t put your phone in danger. They’re also stylish and protective.

DO MAGSAFE PHONES WORK WITH QI CHARGERS?

If you love the idea of charging your phone wirelessly, you’ve probably already invested in a few Qi wireless chargers in the past several years. Apple announced compatibility with Qi chargers beginning with the iPhone 8, so wireless charging is not a new concept for longtime Apple users. But does the integration of MagSafe mean you have to throw out all your Qi wireless charging stations and docks? Luckily, the answer is no.

iPhone 12s and newer are still compatible with Qi charging technology. But there’s a caveat. You won’t be able to achieve 15-watt speeds, even if you use your MagSafe-enabled phone, with a typical Qi charger. The only way to get the fastest speeds possible is to use your MagSafe phone with a MagSafe charger. This is also the only way to take advantage of the secure and efficient magnetic connection design. Your best bet is to make the switch to all MagSafe chargers.

what is case with magsafe

IS WIRELESS CHARGING WORTH THE HYPE?

Now that you understand MagSafe and all its benefits, you might want to ask yourself if it’s worthwhile to upgrade to the latest iPhone to take advantage of it. The reality is that MagSafe is a cutting-edge new advancement that will help you charge faster and get more from your tech. But it may not be a complete replacement for regular wired charging.

Wireless charging comes with a wide range of benefits. For one, it eliminates the need for messy, disorganized cables throughout your home or office. You still have to plug in your MagSafe charger into the wall outlet, of course, but a wireless option allows you to keep your nightstand, counter or desktop clean and free of ugly cables. It’s also considered somewhat safer for your device since there are fewer connections to mess with.

There are some downsides to wireless charging you should consider. The biggest problem with wireless charging is that it’s still not quite as fast as your plug-in iPhone charger. With certain iPhone charging adapters, you can achieve charging rates of up to 20 watts. This means you can charge your phone up to  50 percent battery in around 30 minutes  . MagSafe chargers  take about twice as long  to charge up to 50 percent.

Ultimately, MagSafe is a massive improvement on wireless charging and phone accessorizing compared with the existing technology. It’s faster and more convenient than the wireless charging options that were out there before. However, it probably won’t replace all charging, especially if you want the fastest possible charging speeds. For non-MagSafe users, our  Power Pad 3-in-1 wireless charger  is a great alternative.

What is MagSafe? Is A MagSafe Case Worth the Investment?

What is MagSafe? Is A MagSafe Case Worth the Investment?

In 2020, Apple quietly launched a “wireless” charging system designed to keep up with the modern iPhone user’s battery issues. MagSafe technology allows for wireless charging that is twice the speed of any Qi battery suite and makes safer, more efficient charging as effortless as the click of a magnet. Those who are already familiar with Qi, or wireless cellphone charging, probably know that the Qi wireless power standard is what enables someone to charge devices made by multiple manufacturers on the same charging station. Thus, the Qi Standard makes it possible for consumers to buy just one charging pad or base instead of needing to purchase a separate wireless charger for their smartphone, airpods, and smart watch. While previously released Qi chargers added much needed convenience to our relentless cell phone usage, the charging speed and alignment issues have left much to be desired. The system relies on a communication of power transfer between the device’s battery and the base. So, if the device is not perfectly aligned, the charging speed and device’s battery life are compromised.

what is case with magsafe

Apple MagSafe has addressed these problems by building wireless charging capability directly into Apple smartphone models starting with the iPhone 12 . This design transfers energy from an adaptive coil within the phone directly to the phone’s battery, increasing the wireless charging speed from the standard Qi’s 7 watts to up to 15 watts.

While we know your eyes are probably beginning to glaze over at the mention of electricity measurements, the numbers make it clear: MagSafe charging gets your phone back in business much more quickly than most other wireless docks. And, because there is a Magsafe magnet built directly into the body of the phone and battery pack, Apple’s latest charging system eliminates any alignment issues that arise when setting the phone onto the charger. With the magnet ensured lock, you don’t have to worry about returning to your phone after an hour to find that it is still in the red.

But, it will also work with any Qi compatible model (iPhone 8 and beyond) as well as any set of Airpods that have a wireless charging case. (Keep in mind, the magnetic alignment only applies to iPhone 12 and beyond.)

Do You Actually Need a Magsafe Case?

Because a case must be no larger than 2mm thick and free of materials that could impede the coil connection, a MagSafe compatible case is the optimal way to live a MagSafe life. But, it seems to us that the first question you need to ask yourself is…

Do You Need a Wireless Charging System At All?

If you already have a wireless charging system, and you love it, this part is not for you. If you are on the fence, keep reading.

It does, at first glance, seem a little unnecessary to buy into a “wireless” charging device that isn’t truly wireless. Any Qi charging unit must be connected to a power cord, and the MagSafe collection is no different. Furthermore, in some ways, the old fashioned charging system that is just plugging your phone into the wall does provide some advantages to the MagSafe system:

Wired charging is faster and more efficient than wireless charging.

Charging via USB cable provides 20w worth of power delivery versus the 7.5-15w capabilities of the wireless. It can take more than twice as long to charge your phone on a dock or mat.

Wireless charging can diminish your battery life over time.

Many Qi chargers can overheat your phone battery which will age your battery much more quickly than even Apple intended.

Wireless chargers can be more expensive than standard charging cables.

A cable charger is, on average, roughly half the cost of most wireless brands.

Your phone cannot be used during a wireless refueling session.

If you are using a MagSafe charging pad or dock, you have no phone for a small while. No social media stalking. No slack. No quick email. No calling an Uber.

You still need a power cord and an outlet for a wireless system.

Something needs to be plugged in somewhere either way . . . so what’s the point?

We get it. It does seem like there is no value to an upgrade. But our team still uses the MagSafe charging system. And, because it’s our blog, we are taking the space to tell you our opinion.

what is case with magsafe

Why You Might Invest in Magsafe Products

Less charging cable interaction.

Your charging base remains plugged in all the time. You don’t have to find the cable, untangle the cable, and manage to plug it into both a wall and your phone after a long happy hour. You just set your phone down on the base, let the magnets connect, and walk away.

This system allows for multiple smart devices to charge at the same time.

Three phones and an airpod case or two are no problem for a charging pad.

Battery Boosting Accessories For Your iPhone

Because of the magnetic function built into MagSafe phones and cases , there are nearly endless possibilities for faster charging on the go. A MagSafe case allows you to charge your phone with compatible wallets , phone grips , car mounts , and battery packs (to name a few) with a quick click.

A wireless charger minimizes the chance of connection failure and even electrical shock. It might be surprising, but there are still many injuries and even fatalities associated with cable charging mishaps every year. Because the cable stays in one spot on a MagSafe system, you are less likely to have a frayed or tangled cord. And, while we previously noted that a Qi charging station can wreak havoc on your phone’s battery, the magnetic click capability of the MagSafe charging suite eliminates the need to worry about overheating your phone.

We are a company that makes tech accessories that marry style with functionality, so it won’t come as a shock that we prefer the clean aesthetics of a wireless device. With the right design, your charging system can enhance the look of your tech space. To that end, here are a few of our favorite Magsafe compatible products . . .

Delilah MagSafe Compatible Case

Elegant with a bit of spunk, this golden pearl iPhone ring makes a statement. It pops in photos, clicks onto your MagSafe case, and doubles as a phone stand.

Looking for a cool phone case or accessory we didn’t feature? Come on in.

What Makes a Case MagSafe® Compatible?

What Makes a Case MagSafe Compatible typography

When Apple launched the iPhone 12 in 2020, they announced an innovative in-built technology with it - MagSafe. Apple have included MagSafe in all their iPhone series since.

Each iPhone 12 has a ring of multiple magnets in the back positioned around a Qi charging coil. MagSafe refers to the magnetic ring, and the Apple ecosystem of chargers and accessories which have the same ring of the same magnets.

For accessories like card wallets, this means it will stay magnetically connected to your phone. For your wireless charger, it ensures a perfect alignment between the charging coil and phone battery for optimised charge speeds. A copper shield between the MagSafe and charging components, and the rest of the iPhone’s internal components prevents the magnetic field from interfering inside your phone.

Do you need a MagSafe case?

A MagSafe phone case (or MagSafe "enabled") will have an OEM magnet array inside it that will help strengthen your attachment to your other MagSafe accessories like a wallet or wireless charger. MagSafe is a trademark of Apple but commonly refers to a circular magnet inside the phone.

Without a  MagSafe enabled case , the magnets in your phone will be farther from the accessory and the magnetic hold won't be as strong. With a MagSafe case, you can confidently set your phone down to charge, quickly.

What is a MagSafe charger?

MagSafe, in its simplest definition, is a safe way to use magnets in the charging of your device. Apple first invented MagSafe as an improvement for the way to charge the MacBook. Instead of a cord that plugs into the laptop, the connection is made with a magnetic attachment, hence the name. And every time I’ve tripped over that cord since, I love the MagSafe concept even more.

With the release of the iPhone 12, the latest version of this concept comes to life for mobile. Built into the new iPhone 12 line is a series of magnets that encircle the wireless charging coil. When paired with a MagSafe compatible charger, the two devices lock together to improve the wireless charging experience. MagSafe is also included in the iPhone 13, 14, and 15, along with Qi2 wireless charging ).

Where is the MagSafe magnet?

If you are thinking, “okay smart guy… but where is the MagSafe magnet?” Good question, let me explain. Within the iPhone itself, the 18 magnets are arranged in a ring shape that’s located under the wireless charging coil. Similarly, MagSafe phone cases contain a similar array of magnets that when connected to those in the phone, enables secure, high-speed charging.

Will my non-MagSafe case still charge?

I can’t speak for non-Carved cases, but, “yes,” our non-MagSafe Carved cases still allow the iPhone 14/13/12 to “snap” into place atop a MagSafe charger . Not quite as strong a “snap” but still good. We made a little video to show you the difference. Check it out.

Do all iPhones come with MagSafe?

Currently, MagSafe charging is a feature of the iPhone 12, 13, 14 and models, as well as the newest iPhone 15 models . It’s also present in AirPod Pros, 2nd & 3rd-generation AirPods, and MacBook Pros made before 2016 and after 2021.

Read our side-by-side comparison of the iPhone 14 & 15 .

Apple’s proprietary charging technology is exclusive to Apple products, meaning it’s not available for Samsung Galaxy devices like the 23. Fortunately, we have a solution for that too.

Benefits of Carved MagSafe Cases

At Carved, we wanted to expand the benefits of MagSafe. Remember all those iPhone 11 phones that have wireless charging capability, but not the MagSafe internal magnets? They charge wirelessly, but sometimes slip off the charger, causing your battery to stop charging. We went back and redesigned our iPhone 11 cases to include magnets. Now, if you have an iPhone 11 with a Carved MagSafe case, you have MagSafe functionality. It won’t be as strong as the iPhone 12/13/14/15 with a MagSafe case, but it does maintain a secure charging connection.

At Carved, we are all about that one-of-one look. We think your phone case should be as unique as you are. But we also want the case to do more than just look good, it should function well.

So, do you “need” a MagSafe case? “Need” is a strong word… but we guarantee if you get a Carved MagSafe case you will love it! And your phone will stay charged.
