How to create an adult writing workshop

Putting together an adult writing workshop can hone your skills and strengthen a community.

bookmobile

Davidson Valley Public Library System in North Carolina began using a bookmobile in 1929, fewer than six months after opening its doors. The current Davidson bookmobile is 26 years old, and most of its parts have been rebuilt – except for the driver, who is still the original and going strong. The bookmobile pictured here was delivered to the library in 1970 and was comparable in size to a modern RV. While the number of bookmobiles has decreased in recent years, almost 700 continue to serve the nation’s readers.

If you can read this sentence, then you are luckier than nearly one-third of adults who struggle with literacy every day in our country.

037

The facts are startling. We don’t like to think of our nation as a place where a large portion of the adult population can’t read the newspaper or complete basic job applications.

It would be easy to blame the educational system. But adult literacy isn’t only an education issue; it’s a civil rights issue. Educator and literacy advocate David Barton has said, “People use literacy to make changes in their lives; literacy changes people and people find themselves in the contemporary world of changing literacy practices.”

Writers can be a part of that change. Indeed, they can help lead it by creating adult writing workshops, which serve the dual purpose of supporting their creativity and resumes as well as contributing to the public good.

What steps are necessary?

To start, let’s define literacy.

On literacy

Literacy is an individual’s ability to read and write and to apply those skills to the world around him or her to make meaning and communicate. This can also apply to math skills (numeracy) and technology (digital literacy).

Research shows that the most effective adult literacy instruction teaches students the skills they need to know to improve quality of life, whether that includes learning how to create a resume, craft a letter to a child’s teacher or express thoughts and experiences in personal essays.

A writing workshop can do that.

Many nonprofit organizations and places with built-in adult communities (VA hospitals, nursing homes, half-way houses) seek out these types of workshops led by writers who are skilled and passionate. And you don’t have to re-invent the wheel.

If you’ve never taught a writing workshop, especially one geared toward literacy, the first step might be connecting with an adult education or literacy organization as a volunteer. America’s Literacy Database can help you find an organization near you. Some organizations provide training, access to resources and ongoing professional development for tutors.

The workshop proposal

The next step is to develop a workshop proposal. These five steps can help.

  • What specific types of writing or writing techniques do you plan to teach? Do you see yourself teaching professional writing (resumes and cover letters) or creative nonfiction (essays, poems, articles)? Would your instruction focus more on the nuts and bolts of grammar, or on organization and clarity? This helps a program manager determine if students will find value in your workshop and to market the workshop to the appropriate population.
  • Do you have previous teaching or other relevant experience that qualifies you to run this workshop? Do you have your MFA or teaching credentials? Has your writing ever been published? Do you have experience working with the elderly or immigrants?
  • How many students do you plan to work with? This helps a program manager determine the best location for the workshops and anticipate possible material costs (if any). Don’t overestimate this number if you’ve never taught before. It’s better to have a small group of students and a productive workshop than too many students and a chaotic teaching experience.
  • What days and times do you plan to hold your workshop? How long will your workshop run (five weeks, two months, all year)? Again, this helps a program manager determine the best location for your class and schedule your proposed workshop around existing classes. You should also consider the amount of time adult students could dedicate to completing a workshop. Could your students attend classes twice a week for fewer weeks, creating a more “accelerated” program?
  • What kind of support would you require from the organization to facilitate this workshop? Do you need help marketing and promoting the workshop? Do you need suggestions for resources? Will you have to purchase instructional materials? Hint: The more you can take on, the more appealing it will be to an overworked program manager.

Making the approach

Once your workshop proposal is outlined, approach a local supervisor or volunteer coordinator. If your workshop is interesting, you and the local organization leader can work on the logistics of marketing and organizing it.

A word of caution to aspiring writing workshop teachers: Make a plan, but be prepared to adapt it (or discard it entirely) to target the needs and goals of students. When I taught my first writing workshop, I had planned to teach resume and cover letter writing skills, but ended up teaching my students about pre-writing strategies, prefixes and idioms.

While the power dynamic in a K-12 classroom is clear, the lines in an Adult Basic Education class are less defined. In my experience, an ABE instructor is more of a coach or a mentor. To create an effective workshop environment, consider that adult students may come from backgrounds and experiences that may or may not be similar to yours. Despite their best efforts, your students’ attendance may be poor, and it is important to understand that this doesn’t mean they don’t care or they don’t want to learn. Many adult students struggle to fit learning in amid job hunting, children, financial problems and transportation.

But let’s assume students do sign up. Where do you start?

Lesson plans

As any writer will tell you, good writing doesn’t just happen. Good writing is a result of planning, revision and editing – a process that should be explicitly taught. You can begin by teaching students to brainstorm, research and outline ideas before they ever start a draft. You can engage students in this process by thinking aloud as a group and modeling how writers use graphic organizers to collect thoughts.

Remember to always provide students with examples of good writing that they can study for form and style. In Writing Workshops: The Essential Guide , teachers Ralph Fletcher and Joann Portalupi argue that a writing workshop should have a generative curriculum, a series of mini-lessons based on the needs and interests of the students when problems arise. If you decide to teach grammar, target one or two specific grammar issues in short 15-minute mini-lessons as these issues come up in student work.

As with younger students, adult writing students require a targeted approach to developing resources. While elementary school students should be exposed to a broad range of reading and writing forms, this isn’t always appropriate for adult students. Adults in a writing workshop need writing instruction that aligns with their goals, such as getting a better job, communicating with coworkers or recording personal experiences.

Likewise, reading and writing activities that might engage children are not always suitable for adults. It is important to incorporate authentic reading materials (newspaper articles, job ads, chapter books, recipes) and writing exercises for older learners. Reading Research Quarterly reports: “The growth made by participants in general literacy programs is likely to be lost if recently learned skills are not applied, and thus practiced, in real life situations.” To help students retain the new skills they learn, provide plenty of in-class opportunities to practice real life writing skills. These writing opportunities could be as simple as writing holiday cards, drafting letters or emails and journaling.

A decade ago, we didn’t rely nearly as much on written communication (texts, Tweets, emails) as we do today. The growing number of outlets for individuals to communicate with the world does not represent the true voice of America; so many adults in our country are silent because of illiteracy. Using your writing skills to give voice to others struggling with literacy creates a ripple of positive change that affects not only your students, but also the entire community.

Writing workshops are a wonderful way to grow and expand your writing skills—provided you know how to workshop creative writing. There are different writing workshop models, both online and in person, each with their own particular ways of benefiting your writing journey. What are those models, and how do you engage in proper critique writing?

This article is all about making the most of your writing workshops. Whether you’re taking a course with Writers.com, entering your first workshop in undergrad, or putting together your own private writing group, the tips and models in this article will help you learn how to workshop creative writing.

There are a couple of different definitions of writing workshops. For the purposes of this article, we will examine writing workshop models under the university definition, which is the process of sharing your work in a setting where you receive writing feedback and suggestions for improvement.

If you’re looking for the best multi-week creative writing workshops, here are some tips for finding the best on the internet:

The Best Online Writing Workshops: How to Succeed in Creative Writing Workshops

Different Creative Writing Workshop Models

There is no singular way to workshop a piece of writing. Different schools, universities, and institutions have developed different models over time. Even at Writers.com, some of our classes use different writing workshop models.

Here are a few common models you might see employed around the web. Note: this list only applies to adult writing workshops. Youth-focused writing spaces tend to use some form of the model developed by Lucy Calkins .

1. The Iowa Writers’ Workshop Model

The Iowa Writers’ Workshop is one of the most prestigious writing programs in the United States, having produced dozens of Pulitzer winners, National Book Award finalists, and poet laureates. It also developed the standard writing workshop model for universities, specifically under the directorship of poet Paul Engle.

The writing workshop rules are pretty simple: the writer’s work is distributed to every workshop attendee in advance. Each writer then comes to the workshop with their thoughts on the work. The attendees have a conversation about the piece—how they interpret it, aspects they like, what can be improved, etc.

Most importantly, the author cannot speak at any time. This is the “gag rule” of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and it’s the aspect that’s both the most recognizable, and the most criticized, of this workshopping model.

Pros: The argument for keeping the author silent is that the author should not have to explain anything in the work. If the author is allowed to speak, they will most likely interrupt the conversation to defend the writing, rather than pay attention to what does and doesn’t work, and what readers failed to grasp.

Cons: This writing workshop model has been routinely criticized for the ways it silences the author . While authors certainly shouldn’t commandeer the conversation to defend their work, they also deserve space to explain what doesn’t seem to be clicking for the readers. Writing workshops have historically catered to privileged groups; if you’re the only Asian author in a room of non-Asian writers, and the conversation gets stuck on dim sum , shouldn’t you be allowed to correct course?

Workshops should privilege the author and provide useful feedback to all attendees. The “gag rule” has some merit, but as workshops become more diverse—both in identity and in genre—there have to be better ways to run productive creative writing workshops.

These next models all, in some way or another, correct the deficits of the Iowa Writers’ model.

2. Liz Lerman’s Writing Workshop Model

Choreographer Liz Lerman developed a feedback model that has been adapted to a variety of settings, including creative writing workshops. It’s a 4 step process that runs as follows:

  • Statement of meaning: Each group member tells the writer what aspects of the piece resonated for them. This allows the session to lead with what’s working, which is important because an author often doesn’t know what’s good about their writing, and an author usually revises based on the best parts of their work.
  • Questions by the writer to the group: The writer asks questions they have in mind about craft elements in the piece. Did this work? Do you understand this? Typically, these are yes/no questions, and the group members shouldn’t elucidate unless asked to.
  • Questions to the group by the writer: Group members then ask questions about the work, including aspects of it they didn’t understand. This is a much more empathetic way to approach creative writing critique, because it uses questions to point to improvements in the writing, rather than stating “X needs to improve because Y.”
  • Opinions: If there’s time, group members then share their overall opinions of the work, highlighting more of what they liked and wish to see improved.

3. The Playwriting Writing Workshop Model

Although this model is specifically used in playwriting workshops, it can be adapted to poetry, nonfiction, and fiction writing workshops, too.

In this model, participants do not read the work ahead of time. Copies are distributed to everyone, and roles are assigned to the participants. (If there aren’t many characters, participants might be assigned pages; for poetry, only one person might be assigned to read the poem.)

After the reading, the workshop leader will host a general discussion of the work.

This model can prove super beneficial, as it allows the author to hear their work spoken aloud. Where did the reader stumble? What did or didn’t sound natural? Engaging with the work from a distance helps the writer see it more clearly, and they might come away from this reading already with new ideas and opportunities for revision.

And, rather than have students prepare thoughts in advance, a general discussion in the moment reveals how readers will engage with the work in the moment. When you have a book, story, or poem published, the reader probably won’t write out all their thoughts afterwards; eschewing this model gives the writer direct, unadulterated insight into how people engage with their writing.

4. Wild Writing / Writing Circles

The Wild Writing model was developed by Laurie Wagner, and it encourages writers, particularly poets, to produce as much material as they can from their own unconscious minds.

Our instructor Susan Vespoli bases her writing circles off of the Wild Writing workshop model. In these Zoom-based poetry writing workshops, participants do the following:

  • Each participant verbally shares an image with the group. It is an image that has sat on their minds for a few days. They should share it without qualifying it—as in, keeping to visual language, not using words like “beautiful” or “interesting.”
  • The group leader reads a poem twice. They then highlight some striking lines in the poem, which can be used as starting points for the writing session.
  • For 12-15 minutes, each writer free writes, without editing themselves or eschewing certain thoughts. Writers should not cross out words, and they should keep the pen moving. (When they run out of things to say, they can try putting in transition phrases, like “What I mean to say is…)
  • At the end of this, each writer goes around reading from their journals. Writers do not comment on one another’s journal entry . The point is to write and share what’s on the mind in a supportive, encouraging environment.
  • Typically, a Zoom call will repeat this process twice, for 3 sessions in total.

Unlike other workshops where participants give each other writing feedback, this model produces work in a supportive community space. The opportunity to read work aloud allows writers to have deeper insights into their own writing and thinking. In this model, writers grow as writers not by giving feedback, but by being vulnerable in a safe writing space and encountering new ideas from both their brains and the minds of other writers.

When paired with lectures and written feedback outside of the Zoom call, writers come away with rich material for their own work, as well as a new, generative writing practice.

5. Other Modifications on Writing Workshop Models

Writers love to tinker with form, and this includes the form of writing workshops. This article by Jim Nelson offers one such way to modify the workshopping space so that each writer is treated with respect, dignity, curiosity, and encouragement.

How to Workshop Creative Writing: 15 Tips for Success

If you’re participating in online writing workshops, you will be presented with opportunities to give and receive writing feedback. Regardless of genre and the writing workshop model, here are some tips to get the most out of every workshop you attend online.

How to Workshop Creative Writing: Giving Writing Critique

  • Share your own experience. How the work is impacting you as a reader. Readers are very different, so how the piece is landing for you is more helpful than general statements. “I read this as X,” not simply “this is X.”
  • Praise what’s working in the piece. Writers need to know what resonates and where to build from. Every piece of writing has something working well.
  • Keep all writing feedback constructive. Use encouraging language to frame your suggestions, such as “simpler dialogue tags might help this passage flow more smoothly.”
  • Be specific in your feedback. For example, “I love this” is less helpful than “I love how your description of the character’s clothing gives a sense of his personality.”
  • Consider the author’s intent with the piece. Don’t try to shape the work into something you would write; try to advise the writer based on their vision for the piece. If it’s unclear, ask!
  • Consider asking questions when you have them. Instead of “X’s decision doesn’t make sense,” try “Why does X make Y decision?” Talking through ideas in this way can help writers consider new possibilities for the work, without making them feel like they’re doing something wrong.

How to Workshop Creative Writing: Receiving Writing Feedback

  • Ask questions. The best writing workshops give you the space to work through what you don’t know how to do. Come prepared with questions about your work, and don’t be afraid to follow up with the suggestions people give you.
  • Consider your ideal reader. Is the person giving you feedback the person you intend to read this piece? Ideal readers will probably give you the most useful creative writing feedback. That said, readers who have different backgrounds than your ideal reader will also have ideas you might not have considered, which can be useful for both your current project and future ones.
  • Leave your ego at the door. All writers are protective of their work. It’s understandable! But if you enter the workshop space with walls up, you will prevent yourself from seeing the work through other points of view. Don’t let your pride, your vision, or your sense of artistic value prevent you from seeing ways to improve your writing. And remember, we’re all insecure in some way about our work. Workshops give us the chance to improve together, in both our craft and confidence.
  • Know what you want to achieve. At the same time, it’s good to have a vision for what you want your piece to be. Coming into a writing workshop with this vision will help you ask questions and lead a more productive workshop session. It will also help you filter through the writing feedback you receive.
  • Advocate for yourself. It is rare for a workshop to go south, but it happens. When the conversation doesn’t seem to be helping you (for example: non-Asian writers getting stuck on dim sum), you should be able to correct course and make the workshop work for you.
  • File it away. After workshop, file the feedback away for a little while, and don’t try to fix your piece all at once. Rushing into revision is a recipe for regret, as it takes time to absorb and incorporate feedback into your writing. Be slow, methodical, and careful. Above all, don’t let workshop change your vision for the piece—creative writing workshops are stepping stones, not boulders, to your ideal work.

How to Workshop Creative Writing: Improving as a Writer

  • Pay attention to other workshops. The workshop space isn’t yours alone. Often, engaging with other writers’ work and listening to other writers’ critiques will help you grow as a writer yourself. You will encounter dozens of ideas in one workshopping session. File these ideas for later, and pay close attention to everyone’s craft so you can later steal like an artist .
  • Experiment. Writers who experiment with ideas often achieve the most. While it’s good to have an ideal sense of where your piece is headed, it doesn’t hurt to copy your work into a new document and try using ideas you disagree with. What happens when you try writer B’s suggestion over writer A’s? How about vice versa? The more time you spend tinkering with your work and experimenting with ideas, the more insights you have into the craft and into your own vision as an artist.
  • Be patient. Writing is a craft that takes a lifetime to master—and even the masters want to write better. Most writers hate the work they wrote a year ago, and that’s good—it means they’ve grown, sharpened their skills, refined their tastes, and gotten closer to the kind of work they want to achieve. Above all, be diligent and consistent in your writing. It might not be this month, or even this year, but you will one day write stories and poems you feel genuinely proud of.

Writing Workshops and Writers Groups

Online writing workshops.

  • Other Resources

Writers workshops, conferences, and residencies range in size and scope, from campuses overflowing with writers, agents, publishers, and publicists to retreats with only a few writers in residence. When considering all of the options available to writers, start by identifying your goals. Do you want to network with artists of various disciplines or do you want to be in the company of writers only? Do you want to learn about the business of writing? Do you want critiques in a workshop or a one-to-one setting? Do you want to travel to a particular region in the United States? To another country? Chances are, whatever your desires, there’s a conference or a retreat for you.

Once you know what you would like to accomplish, it’s time to research venues. Our Conferences & Residencies database includes details—such as dates, location, cost, participating authors—for over a hundred writing retreats across the country and beyond. Plus, every issue of Poets & Writers Magazine includes information about upcoming application deadlines for conferences, residencies, workshops, and retreats, and every year the March/April issue features a special section on writers communities.

One of the main benefits of attending a writers conference or residency is the opportunity to meet editors, agents, publishers, and other writers. Widening your circle of connections in the literary world can help you solidify your own presence in that world, learn the ins and outs of the publishing industry, and understand how to get your work published.

In addition, most conferences and residencies give writers a chance to sharpen their skills. At a conference, you might attend sessions that illuminate techniques for different aspects of the craft or have the chance to meet and discuss writing with established authors, agents, and editors. At a residency, you’ll have time to hone your practice, probably writing for a concentrated period of time and doing little else; you might also have an opportunity to read your work to other writers, get feedback from them, and learn about what they are working on. At some residencies, you might also have the opportunity to interact with composers and visual artists.

Writing workshops provide writers with an opportunity to receive critical feedback from peers and from an instructor. They also give writers a chance to learn what other writers are working on. Many universities and community colleges offer writing workshops that do not require enrollment in a degree program. Some well-known workshops operate annually for a concentrated period of time, a week or two, in order to provide intensive instruction and dialogue about work in progress.

Writers groups differ from writing workshops in that they tend to be smaller, more intimate, and more casual. They often consist of a handful of friends and acquaintances who meet regularly in someone’s living room, at a café, or online; or larger groups of writers who meet to discuss general issues relating to writing and publishing, to help each other out with contacts and ideas, and to read and critique each other’s work. If you would like to organize a writers group yourself or find one to join,  Poets & Writers Groups is a great place to start. The free online platform has an index of writers and groups with profiles indicating what they’re looking for in a writers group.

Online writing workshops offer professional writing instruction virtually. Like real-world workshops, online workshops generally last for a period of time (usually about six to fourteen weeks) and are developed and taught by experienced writers. Some writers might find online workshops convenient because they can be accessed from anywhere and some do not consist of scheduled class times—participants can “log on” at times that are convenient for them.

Writer’s Digest  offers  online workshops ; universities, community colleges, and virtual colleges often offer them as well— UCLA Extension offers several through their Writers’ Program and Stanford University’s Continuing Studies offers an online certification program in novel writing. Also, some literary magazines, such as Zoetrope: All-Story (through Gotham Writers Workshop ’s online courses),  Catapult , and Orion magazine have online workshops associated with them. 24PearlStreet (hosted by the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown),  LitReactor , Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop , and the  Writers Studio  also offer online classes.

Beltway Poetry Quarterly ’s Artist Residency Programs lists Artist in Residence programs hosted by an institution such as a college, national park, or museum, and you can search by type, region, or format. Writers’ Conferences & Centers , a division of the  Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP), offers an online listing of conferences, centers, festivals, residencies, and retreats, which include member programs that participate in their Kurt Brown Prizes.

The Top Writers' Conferences for 2023 by Book Publicist Scott Lorenz

By Scott Lorenz Westwind Communications

If you are a serious writer with high aspirations, then you’ll want to go to a writers’ conference. Want to meet authors and exchange ideas, tips and techniques? Then sign up for a writer’s conference today.

A writers’ conference is a think tank for authors to build on each other’s ideas and inspire new achievements in their own work. For the cost of lodging and registration, the payoff for attending a writers’ conference could be tremendous.

Attending a writers’ conference gives you a chance to pitch your book, learn about the various publishing options and meet book editors, agents and book marketing specialists. If your book is six months or a year from being finished, you can talk to people with valuable input on shaping your book. At a writers’ conference, you’ll get all sorts of advice to help you wrap up your project when you return home.

Of course, you will want to prepare for any writers’ conference you attend by having a plan of what you want to find out and what you will do while there. I suggest you develop an ‘elevator pitch’ about your book that you can deliver in 30 seconds. Have a one-pager available with your book cover, author headshot, short 50-word synopsis, short bio, website URL, Twitter handle and your contact information. You never know who you’ll meet so be prepared for that moment!

Pro Writer

Writing conferences are great for new writers, and writers who don’t have much support or know what to do next, but they’re good for experienced writers too, to network or brush up on new trends or changes in the publishing world. Thanks for this great list!

Scott Lorenz

Glad you liked the list. Sometimes it’s just good to get out and about and commiserate with fellow authors. Most authors share info, agents and help one another. I highly recommend that authors attend a writer’s confab.

Conference Attendee

This is a great list! If your favorite gets canceled, just go to their website and see if they put it on the next year, or month, etc. Sometimes there are online conferences too. You can meet a diverse group of writers, agents, publishers, and PR people at one of these.

Thank you for your kind words I’m glad you found it informative it’s a major project to keep up with all these not to mention the fact that it’s a moving target with COVID-19.

Samantha Hoffman

Thanks so much for including our conference on your list. We just sold out! This is our 4th year and it gets bigger and better every year.

It’s inspiring and motivating being in the company of other writers.

Thank you for acknowledging us.

Hear from past attendees

"as a first time attendee who had never participated in a writer’s conference before, i wasn’t sure what to expect. what i discovered was a unique opportunity to engage with other individuals who are passionate about writing. every session offered up an overall experience that made me feel part of a supportive, close-knit community. when i left the conference, i know i left gaining new friendships, a renewed sense of purpose, and an even stronger commitment to continue pursuing what i’m most passionate about.".

Sara Steven

“This conference exceeded my expectations. I am the author of a book of poems and have been writing and programming in creative writing communities since I received my MFA, so I was already familiar with the excellent work that the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing does. What I learned firsthand while attending is how this is accomplished: by offering inspired talks and workshops led by gifted and open-hearted writers and by giving attendees plenty of time to digest what we’ve heard and learned. There was an authentic spirit of camaraderie here. Hands down, my favorite conference in years.”

Emma trelles, “the desert nights, rising stars conference is the premier literary event in phoenix. it’s worth flying in for, and if you’re from town, it’s a must. countless strides in my writing can be traced back to a connection or lesson learned from the conference. i often feel like i get a semester’s worth of knowledge in only three days. i definitely plan to go every year.”, bart bergfeld, our sponsors.

Putting together a creative writing conference is a monumental endeavor, one we couldn't possibly accomplish without support. We're deeply grateful to all of the businesses, organizations, and individuals who donate to the conference for their graciousness, generosity, and commitment to the literary arts.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.

With free screenwriting workshops, striking Hollywood writers look to raise spirits and funds

When some 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike in early May, screenwriter Ed Solomon, like so many of his peers, worried about his creative juices stagnating.

During the two previous writers strikes, in 1988 and 2008, Solomon — whose credits include “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Men in Black” and “Now You See Me” — had taken classes, enrolling in a film school summer session and a series of fiction writing workshops.

“I was thinking, ‘What can I take that would keep sort of poking me?’” he says. “I was just hoping to keep pushing myself and challenging myself.”

As he looked around for similarly stimulating courses earlier this year, Solomon realized that, having worked for decades in Hollywood, he already had access to many of the best film and television writers in town.

What if, instead of taking a course, he helped lead one? And what if he offered it for free to other writers as a way to foster a sense of community and raise money to help those adversely affected by the strike?

Writers’ strike: What’s at stake and how it could disrupt Hollywood

As the contract between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expires, a strike has been called.

On June 10, Solomon pitched the idea to his 94,000 followers on the platform formerly known as Twitter: “If I were to do a series of Zoom workshops during the strike (was thinking Q&A sessions on various parts of the craft of writing), would anyone show up?”

Three months and a dozen workshops later, the answer has proven to be a resounding yes.

Launched in partnership with the Black List , a platform dedicated to empowering Hollywood writers, Solomon’s weekly series, Word by Word , has featured a who’s who of screenwriting luminaries, including Judd Apatow, Jesse Armstrong, Eric Roth, J.J. Abrams, Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, Liz Hannah, Sharon Horgan, Craig Mazin, Neil Gaiman, Adele Lim, Chris Miller, Phil Lord, Tracy Oliver and Christopher McQuarrie.

Casual and free-flowing, the two-hour sessions jump off from topics like “Fear, Failure, and F—ing Up” and “Outlining: A Necessary Evil?” into open-ended, often startlingly candid conversations about the agonies and ecstasies and nuts-and-bolts mechanics of the writing process.

With each new episode of Word by Word — which is primarily aimed at writers but open to anyone at no charge — the audience has steadily grown through social media and word-of-mouth, with more than 1,000 people tuning in for a recent Zoom session featuring Charlie Kaufman and Boots Riley.

By soliciting donations from attendees, Word by Word has so far raised roughly $55,000 for three strike funds — the Union Solidarity Coalition, the Entertainment Community Fund and the Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund — to help not only writers but also crew members and others affected by the work stoppage.

They’re on strike, but these writers are finding ways to write and create

The impulse to write is strong, as thousands of TV and film writers in the WGA are discovering while on strike. Might as well tell a hen to not lay eggs.

July 27, 2023

As soon as he saw Solomon’s tweet, Franklin Leonard, who launched the Black List in 2005 to spotlight the best unproduced screenplays, knew he wanted to get involved. Within moments, Leonard sent Solomon a direct message to start figuring out how they could collaborate. With the help of Black List senior vice president Megan Halpern and others on the company’s team, Word by Word was up and running two weeks later, with Susanna Fogel and Lena Dunham as its first guests.

“My team and I feel very lucky be in this position where we can continue to do the work we’re doing to support the writing community,” says Leonard, who is not a WGA member but has been on the picket lines twice with the rest of his company. “I’ve said since long before the strike that writers are the most underappreciated community in the industry. So to be party to that work is a real joy, even if this is not the work that any of us would like to be doing — and shouldn’t have to be doing.”

Three men and a women in a Zoom screen

From the outset, the goal of Word by Word was to go beyond the usual advice doled out to aspiring screenwriters.

“Our thing was, we don’t want this to be something that you could either read in a book or find better taught elsewhere,” says Solomon, who named the workshop in honor of Anne Lamott’s much-loved writing advice book “Bird by Bird.” “Really, it’s about trying to create access to the inner lives and inner processes of people whose work I admire and who are willing to share it.”

The Word by Word workshops have offered plenty of practical tips and hard-earned wisdom about the craft. (The second half of each two-hour session is devoted to questions from the audience.)

Riley, who wrote and directed “Sorry to Bother You,” detailed his daily ritual of writing from 6 to 10 a.m. daily on a laptop with no internet connection to prevent distractions. McQuarrie, whose recent credits include “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” emphasized the importance of tethering expository dialogue to character conflict to avoid boring an audience, explaining, “Information is the death of emotion.”

With little in the way of formal structure and often surprising guest pairings, the conversations frequently veer in unexpected directions. Paired with Abrams on a recent episode, Apatow recounted the inauspicious beginning of his own filmmaking career: dropping out of USC film school after he won “The Dating Game” so he could collect his prize of a trip to Acapulco. In the same episode, Solomon revealed that in his younger years he and some friends had once stolen a Newsweek magazine featuring Burt Reynolds on the cover from Reynolds’ own mailbox, only to return it later out of a sense of guilt.

A man and three women on a Zoom screen

At one point during her episode with McQuarrie, Schumer’s 4-year-old son crawled onto her lap and told a joke. “Have you seen the new pirate movie?” he asked McQuarrie. “It’s rated Arrrr.”

“People are seeing something they haven’t seen before,” says Halpern, who runs the Black List’s screenwriting lab program. “When you’re paired with someone unexpected, it’s a really easy way to get into unexpected conversations so it doesn’t just feel like you’re listening to the same stories and the same advice that they’ve given before. It allows them to have a little bit more wiggle room.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, the psychological torment of the blank page and the fear of failure have been frequently recurring themes on Word by Word. Kaufman, who won an original screenplay Oscar for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and is one of the industry’s most revered writers, spoke of his own relentless inner critic. “I have a lack of confidence,” he said. “Whenever I embark on something new, it’s a struggle.”

Solomon says that shared sense of self-doubt and creative angst, no matter whether one has written a hit movie or series or just aspires to someday, is a key part of Word by Word’s appeal.

“One of the most heartening things about this is how much people who are earlier in the trajectory of their careers feel validated by the fact that they can see themselves in these guests,” says Solomon, who most recently created the Max limited series “Full Circle,” his third collaboration with director Steven Soderbergh. “We’ve had some remarkable people on, and not one person feels like they’ve got their s— together. Everyone feels like they’re still learning the craft.”

A woman and three men in a Zoom screen

With no end in sight for Hollywood’s historic double strike, Solomon and his Black List partners are continuing to book weekly episodes; upcoming guests include Ben Stiller, Patton Oswalt, Spike Jonze, Janicza Bravo, Callie Khouri and Sarah Silverman. “We haven’t had hesitation from anyone,” says Solomon. “Everyone has been like, ‘How can I help?’”

Looking beyond the strike, the team behind Word by Word are planning to keep the series going once everyone gets back to work. “It may be a bit more intermittent once the strike ends, because scheduling will get more difficult, but continuing this in some form after the strike is a no-brainer for us,” says Leonard. (An announcement is coming soon on making previous episodes available.)

Solomon sees the series eventually expanding beyond just writers to include guests from other creative fields, while still sticking to its mission to raise funds to support the entertainment community.

“I think you could substitute any art form for writing in these conversations,” he says. “Writing a song, building a piece of fine cabinetry, being an architect, dreaming up how to make a certain vintage of wine — I’m of the belief that there are more similarities among those than differences. The idea post-strike would be to continue to raise money for these funds, because they can and will be used in future work stoppages. So the more we can help, the better.”

Meanwhile, Solomon is getting all the creative stimulation he could have hoped for from any class and then some. “Getting to talk to amazing writers, you realize that there are so many different ways to approach the process,” he says. “You get so embedded in your own process that you forget that what you do is just habit that gets deeper and deeper and deeper. So having these conversations with people has really opened up my world in a way.”

What Is Writing Workshop?

An essential part of the responsive classroom.

What Is Writing Workshop?

If you’re new to teaching writing, you may have heard discussion about writing workshop but not be entirely sure about what it is or how to use it in your classroom. WeAreTeachers is here with the answer.

What is writing workshop?

Writing workshop is a student-centered framework for teaching writing that is based on the idea that students learn to write best when they write frequently, for extended periods of time, on topics of their own choosing.

To develop skills as a writer, students need three things: ownership of their own writing, guidance from an experienced writer, and support from a community of fellow learners. The writing workshop framework meets these needs and streamlines instruction in order to meet the most important objective: giving kids time to write. The workshop setting supports children in taking their writing seriously and viewing themselves as writers.

The four main components of writing workshop are the mini-lesson, status of the class, writing/conferring time, and sharing. There is not a prescribed time limit for each component, rather they are meant to be flexible and determined by students’ needs on any given day.

1. Mini-lesson (5 – 15 minutes)

This is the teacher-directed portion of writing workshop. Mini-lessons should be assessment-based, explicit instruction. They should be brief and focused on a single, narrowly defined topic that all writers can implement regardless of skill level. According to writing guru Lucy Calkins , mini-lessons are a time to “gather the whole class in the meeting area to raise a concern, explore an issue, model a technique, or reinforce a strategy.”

Sources for mini-lessons can come from many places. Many teachers follow the scope and sequence of a prepared curriculum or use the state or national standards as a guide. Ideally, topics for mini-lessons come from your observations as you conference with your students and become aware of their needs.

The four parts of a mini-lesson:

  • Connection (activating students’ prior knowledge)
  • Teaching (presentation of the actual skill or topic)
  • Active engagement (giving students time for supported practice of the skill)
  • Link (helping students figure out how the topic pertains to their individual writing piece).

For a helpful description of the mini-lesson process, read Writing Workshop Fundamentals by Two Writing Teachers.

2. Status update (3 – 5 minutes)

Meant to be a quick check-in, status update is a way to find out where your students are in the writing process— pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, evaluating, or publishing.

Status of the class doesn’t have to happen every day and it needn’t take up much class time. It can be a quick verbal check-in or “whip” around the classroom. Or you may want to use a clip chart, notebook, or a magnet chart.

what is writer's workshop

SOURCE: Polka Dots and Pencils

Another great idea is to use a pocket chart. Students show which step they are on by putting the appropriately colored card in their pocket.

what is writer's workshop

SOURCE: Teaching My Friends

Status update lets you as the teacher evaluate how your students are progressing. It also creates accountability for the students and motivates your community of learners.

3. Writing (20 – 45 minutes)

The majority of writing workshop is devoted to simply giving students time to write. During this time, teachers can either be modeling the process by working on their own writing or conferencing with individual students. In all reality, the majority of your time will be observing and helping students. A good goal during a typical week of writing workshop is to aim to work individually with every student in the class at least once.

Remember, the main priority of conferencing is to listen, not to talk. But to prompt your students to share their progress with you, here are a few questions to ask from Teaching That Makes Sense .

What is Writer's Workshop?

Once your students get the hang of what a helpful conference looks and feels like, they can use peer conferencing to help one another.

4. Sharing (5–15 minutes)

It can be tempting, when time is running short, to skip this last element of writing workshop, but don’t!  It can be the most instructionally valuable part of the class, other than the writing time itself. When students grow comfortable seeing themselves as part of a writing community, they are willing to take more risks and dive deeper into the process. In addition, kids often get their best ideas and are most influenced by one another.

Some tips to keep sharing time manageable:

  • For whole-class sharing, keep a running list of who has shared and when, and h ave students share only a portion of their writing—maybe what they consider their best work, or a part they need help with.
  • Let students share in pairs—one reads aloud and one listens.
  • Have students swap work and read silently to themselves.

At first the concept of writing workshop may seem overwhelming. But once you establish your routine, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to implement. Because writing workshop gives students so much time to write, their writing skills will improve dramatically. And hopefully, being part of such a dynamic writing community will instill in your students a lifelong love for writing.
