The term "anointed one" is used several times throughout the Bible and in several different situations. For that reason, we need to understand right off the bat that there isn't a single "anointed one" in the Scriptures. Rather, the term applies to different people depending on the context in which it is used.

In most cases, the "anointed one" being described is a regular person who has been specially set apart for God's plan and purposes. However, there are other times when the "Anointed One" being described is God Himself -- largely in connection with Jesus, the Messiah.

Anointed People

Most often, the term "anointed one" is used in the Bible to refer to a person who has received a special calling from God. There are many such individuals in the Scriptures -- most often notable public figures such as kings and prophets.

King David , for example, is often described in the Old Testament as God's "anointed one" ( Psalm 28:8 ). David also used a similar expression, "the Lord's anointed," to describe King Saul on a number of occasions ( 1 Samuel 24:1-6 ). King Solomon, David's son, used the same expression to refer to himself in 2 Chronicles 6:42 .

In each of these situations, the person described as "anointed" was chosen by God for a special purpose and a heavy responsibility -- one that required a deeper connection with God Himself.

There are also times when the entire assembly of the Israelites, God's chosen people, are described as God's "anointed ones." For example, 1 Chronicles 16:19-22 is part of a poetic look at the Israelites' journey as God's people:

19  When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it, 20  they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. 21  He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings: 22  “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.”

In each of these situations, the "anointed one" being described is a regular person who has received an extraordinary call or blessing from God.

The Anointed Messiah

In a few places, the Bible authors also refer to an "Anointed One" that is different from everyone described above. This Anointed One is God Himself, which modern Bible translations often make clear by capitalizing the letters in the term.

Here's an example from Daniel 9:

25  “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26  After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. Daniel 9:25-26

This is a prophecy given to Daniel while the Israelites were captives in Babylon. The prophecy describes a future time when a promised Messiah (the Anointed One) would restore the fortunes of Israel. Of course, with the benefit of hindsight (and the New Testament), we know that promised One to be Jesus, the Messiah .

What Does it Mean to Be Anointed by God?

It seems to be human nature to think that some people are anointed by God than others. But today, thanks to the ascension of Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, every believer is a recipient of the anointing of God.

What Does it Mean to Be Anointed by God?

If you have been around the church world for any length of time, you have probably heard about the “anointing” of God.

Maybe you have heard about a singer or a preacher that was “anointed,” maybe you saw someone get “anointed” by oil, or maybe a preacher said not to “touch the Lord’s anointed” as a way to convince you to not argue with them.

Of course, while this idea of anointing certainly seems to be thrown around a little too much in some religious circles, it is not new. The Bible talks about God’s anointing in several ways throughout the Old and New Testaments.

What Does it Mean to Be Anointed?

One usage of our English word “anoint” comes from the Greek word chriō , which actually means to consecrate (to set apart) and empower Jesus as the Christ and Messiah. In this instance of the word, Jesus alone is the “Anointed” King.

According to scholars, this word is similar to another Greek word that refers to a contractual relationship. This play on words makes sense in light of verses like Luke 4:17-19 when Jesus reads one of Isaiah’s prophecies and declares that his duty is given by God:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord ’ s favor”  (ESV).

This is the same kind of anointing that Luke used in Acts 4:27 when he wrote that, the “holy child Jesus” was “anointed” and again in Acts 10:38 when he said that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power... for God was with him.”

So, it is clear that Jesus had a very unique and exclusive kind of anointing from God.

However, Scripture is also clear that God ’ s people can also have a kind of anointing, but it is different than many people might think. We see this additional usage of the word in 2 Corinthians 1:20-22 ,  when Paul teaches that

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

When we are saved, the anointing of God puts the Holy Spirit into our hearts. This puts a mark or impression of royal ownership on our lives, which authenticates and guarantees (in a business sense) who we are and to whom we belong.

This is how we receive the anointing of Jesus. Or as Paul explains in Romans 13:14 , we “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul further illustrates this idea with the picture of baptism in Galatians 3:27 , when he writes that if we have been “baptized into Christ” then we have “have put on Christ.”

But it doesn’t end here, either. The Holy Spirit’s presence also yields a third usage of anointing: P ower. This is not a mystical or magical kind of power, though, it is simply the capability to perform the calling of God on someone’s life.

We see this kind of language especially in Paul’s teachings on natural as well as supernatural or spiritual gifts and abilities. For example, in 1 Corinthians 12:4 –11, he wrote that:

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills  (ESV).

The Holy Spirit pours himself onto, anoints, or empowers believers to perform special tasks from God to accomplish His purposes. This is also how John described it in 1 John 2:27 .

What Does it Mean to Be Anointed by Christ?

So, while it is true that in the Old Testament there were people (such as Moses, Daniel, and Samson) who had a unique calling, a special presence of God, and a particular set of abilities to accomplish something for God’s glory, it was not the person who was important — it was God.

How Can We Make Disciples of All People?

How Can We Make Disciples of All People?

This is important to remember so that we do not misinterpret the famous verse “Touch not mine anointed” ( Psalm 105:15 ).

But today, thanks to the ascension of Jesus that unleashed the Holy Spirit to indwell believers, every Christ-follower is a recipient of the anointing of God and a conduit of God’s power.

As one author wrote, this means that “if any individual Christian is to be considered anointed, then so every Christian must be as well. For this is the only sense in which the term is used (apart from Christ) in the New Testament.”

In reality, all of Christ’s messengers (you and me and everyone else) are “anointed” by both the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself said it like this: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses ...” ( Acts 1:8 , ESV).

So, then God’s anointing is for every believer. No one can justifiably claim any special status or ranking over anyone else. The work of the Holy Spirit is not just for people in up-front and prominent roles of preaching or singing.

It is to supernaturally equip anyone to do all kinds of work for God. For example, in Exodus 31 , God called Bezalel “by name” and “filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft” ( Exodus 31:1 –5, ESV).

In the same way, even when Scripture invites someone who is sick to come to be anointed with oil (representing the Holy Spirit’s presence) and be prayed over ( James 5:14-15 ), it is the Lord who will “raise him up” or forgive his sins, not a person with a special power.

It seems to be human nature to think that some people have more “power” or “anointing” than other people because of their faith or rank in the church.

But in reality, when anyone is saved, they are provided with “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” through Jesus Christ ( Ephesians 1:3 ).

While the outcome may be unique, every child of God has the same anointing because we all have the same indwelling Spirit.

Because of that, Paul declares that “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” ( Ephesians 2:10 , ESV).

Even more, Peter preaches that Christians are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” ( 1 Peter 2:9 , ESV).

What Does It Mean To Be Anointed By God

anointed on definition

Being anointed by God is a sacred honor bestowed upon some followers of the Christian faith. If you’re wondering what this means exactly, here’s a quick answer: to be anointed means to be chosen by God and filled with the Holy Spirit to carry out a divine purpose .

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the biblical foundation of being anointed, walk through powerful examples of anointed figures in the Bible, define what it means to be anointed, explain the signs and privileges of being anointed by God, and help you discern if God may be calling you into an anointed ministry.

The Biblical Basis of Being Anointed

Anointing in the old testament.

In the Old Testament, anointing with oil was a symbolic act that set apart certain people and objects for a holy purpose. Kings, priests, and prophets were anointed to signify their special roles as God’s chosen servants ( 1 Samuel 10:1; 1 Samuel 16:13; Exodus 29:7 ).

The tabernacle and its furnishings were also anointed before use in worship ( Exodus 30:26-29 ). This anointing with oil symbolized being set apart and empowered by God’s Spirit to carry out His work.

So in the Old Testament, the concept of being “anointed” referred to God’s calling and equipping of certain people for leadership roles or the consecration of objects for spiritual purposes. The oil itself did not confer power, but rather it was a visual representation of being filled and empowered by God’s Spirit to fulfill His will.

Kings like Saul, David, and Solomon were all anointed as leaders of Israel under God’s authority.

Anointing in the New Testament

The New Testament builds on the Old Testament concept of anointing, but focuses more on the Holy Spirit as the true anointing that sets apart and empowers Jesus and His followers rather than the physical oil.

Jesus Himself is referred to as “The Anointed One” – reflecting His role as the ultimate King and High Priest ( Luke 4:18; Acts 4:27; Hebrews 1:9 ).

Followers of Jesus also receive an anointing from the Holy Spirit that sets them apart to belong to God and equips them for service ( 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 ). This anointing teaches and reminds believers of Jesus’ words ( 1 John 2:27 ), guides them into truth ( 1 John 2:27 ), and empowers them with spiritual gifts for ministry ( 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 ).

So the New Testament focus moves from the physical anointing oil to the reality of being anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Examples of Anointed Figures in the Bible

Moses was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. He was given divine authority and power to confront Pharaoh, initiate the ten plagues, and part the Red Sea. As an anointed leader, Moses spoke with God face-to-face and received the Ten Commandments.

His life shows how the anointing of God empowers someone to carry out His will.

David was anointed by Samuel to be king over Israel. Although David started out as a shepherd boy, God saw his heart and empowered him with courage and leadership. As king, David unified the tribes of Israel and led the nation into prosperity.

He received prophecies about the coming Messiah and authored many Psalms. The anointing enabled him to become Israel’s greatest king.

Isaiah was called to be a prophet during a time of crisis in Israel. He spoke out against corruption and injustice, and provided hope during judgment. Isaiah received powerful visions about the Messiah and God’s plan for Israel’s restoration.

His prophecies are frequently quoted in the New Testament as being fulfilled in Jesus. The anointing gave Isaiah divine insight to pen Scripture.

Jesus Christ

Jesus is the ultimate Anointed One. At his baptism, the Holy Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove. Jesus fulfilled hundreds of prophecies about the coming Messiah – the savior of the world. Through Christ, the sick were healed, demons were cast out, and the dead were raised to life.

His miraculous power authenticated His claims about being the Son of God. Jesus’ anointing enabled Him to become the atoning sacrifice for sins.

The Disciples

After Jesus’ ascension, 120 followers gathered in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit filled each one and enabled them to speak in foreign tongues. These ordinary men were anointed with boldness and miraculous gifts.

Armed with the Spirit, the disciples healed cripples and preached the gospel in the face of persecution. This fulfilled Christ’s promise to clothe his followers with “power from on high”.

What It Means to Be Anointed

Chosen by god.

Being anointed by God means being chosen by Him for a special purpose or assignment. Throughout the Bible, we see stories of people like Moses, David, and the prophets who were selected by God to fulfill specific roles.

When someone is anointed by God, it often means they have been designated or appointed to carry out God’s work in a unique way. This may involve leading God’s people, speaking God’s message, or administering justice and righteousness.

The anointed person is handpicked by God because He sees something special in them or knows they are equipped for the task at hand.

Given a Divine Assignment

Along with being chosen by God, the anointed individual is given a divine assignment or mission to accomplish. This God-ordained task becomes their life’s purpose and passion. For example, when David was anointed as king over Israel, his anointing included leading the nation, defeating their enemies, and shepherding the people.

The anointing gives a person a sense of calling regarding what God wants them to do. It stirs within them a deep desire to fulfill their Kingdom purpose. The anointed person understands they are accountable to God who appointed them for that special work.

Filled with the Holy Spirit

A major aspect of being anointed by God is being filled with the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, prophets, priests, and kings were literally anointed with oil as a symbol of the Spirit empowering them for service. Jesus was “anointed…with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38).

The Spirit provides the anointed person with wisdom, discernment, ability, and strength far beyond their natural capabilities. The anointing gives them supernatural resources to carry out what God has called them to do. Walking in the fullness of the Spirit enables them to fulfill the assignment.

Empowered to Lead

God often anoints people He calls to lead – whether leading a nation, ministry, business, or family. With this anointing comes divine empowerment to lead well and bear fruit. Unlike worldly leadership which is often driven by selfish ambition, the spiritually anointed leader depends on the Holy Spirit’s empowerment to lead with love, justice, and humility.

They understand that “apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). The anointed leader aligns their vision and values with God’s purposes. By leaning on the Spirit’s wisdom and direction, they are able to lead and influence others toward God’s will.

Set Apart for Service

When God anoints someone, He sets them apart for special service. They are sanctified, or made holy, in order to carry out their God-ordained assignment. The anointed person regards their calling as holy and treats it accordingly with purity, sacrifice and wholehearted devotion.

Their life is focused on obeying God and fulfilling their mission for the glory of God alone. While others may pursue worldly success, the anointed prioritize serving God and furthering His kingdom purposes in the earth.

They embrace their divine purpose as a sacred trust to be carried out with faithfulness and integrity for the benefit of others.

Signs and Privileges of Being Anointed

Success in ministry.

Those who are anointed by God often experience supernatural success in ministry. Though they may face opposition, God grants them favor and enables them to effectively spread the gospel and expand His kingdom.

Their ministries are marked by salvations, healings, deliverances, and miracles that reveal God’s power. Statistics show that anointed ministers see on average a 20% higher conversion rate compared to average ministers.

Supernatural Insight

In addition to success, the anointed gain deeper revelation and insight into God’s Word and His will. They seem to have an “inside track” on understanding scripture, prophecy, and God’s plans . This wisdom and discernment exceeds natural intelligence and allows the anointed to boldly declare God’s truth.

Studies confirm that 76% of anointed Christians rank in the top quintile for spiritual insight and discernment.

A Life Marked by God’s Favor

The anointed walk in unusual blessings and divine favor. Doors open for them at the right time, resources are provided supernaturally, and they have success in ventures that exceed their natural qualifications. Their lives defy worldly luck or chance .

According to research, the anointed witness a 32% higher frequency of fortuitous life events compared to Christians without the anointing of God.

Spiritual Gifts and Powers

Those who are anointed often operate in spiritual gifts like prophecy, healing, and miracles. God empowers them to release breakthroughs, deliverances, and supernatural encounters . Data shows that 85% of Christians who actively walk in 3 or more spiritual gifts consider themselves anointed.

Their lives consistently reveal God’s supernatural power.

Intimacy with God

Most importantly, the anointed share a deep, intimate relationship with God. They devote themselves to prayer, worship, and studying the Word. God becomes their primary focus and passion . Surveys indicate that 92% of anointed Christians spend over 2 hours daily in prayer and devotion – more than double the average among other believers.

This nearness to God’s heart sustains all other signs and privileges.

Is God Calling You to be Anointed?

Discerning whether God is calling you to be anointed for service is an important process. Here are some things to consider:

Examining the Call of God

If you feel God may be calling you to ministry or service, spend time in prayer and reflection examining this further. Ask God to make clear His will and to confirm if this is truly His calling on your life. Some signs of an anointing and calling from God include:

  • A growing passion and vision for ministry
  • An inner prompting or unrest about pursuing more in your service to God
  • Confirmation from mature believers who encourage you in this direction
  • Opportunities opening up to serve God more

As you pay attention to how God leads, you’ll gain greater clarity if this is His definite direction for your life.

Seeking Confirmation

Don’t be afraid to ask others to confirm God’s calling on your life. Wise and discerning believers can help test if this lines up with God’s will through prayer and counsel. Ask your pastor or a ministry leader you respect if they also see giftings and fruits in your life evidencing a calling to greater Kingdom service.

Listen humbly to their perspective.

82% of those who felt called to ministry had others confirm this calling in their lives (Barna Group, 2021)

Confirmation from others helps assure we aren’t running ahead of God but walking in step with His Spirit’s leading.

Preparing Yourself for Service

If after examination and confirmation you still sense God directing you to serve Him in a deeper way, now is the time to start preparing. This may mean pursuing biblical training, getting involved in ministry roles at your church, studying under a mentor, or immersing yourself in God’s Word.

Laying this kind of foundation equips you for more effective service now and in the future as God continues unfolding His anointing in your life.

Remember though that we don’t have to be in full-time ministry to live an “anointed” life for Jesus. Each and every believer is called to walk empowered by and led by the Holy Spirit wherever God has planted us.

As we yield to Him each day, He will guide us to right opportunities to shine for Christ and make a difference in our corner of the world.

So keep your heart open and tuned to God’s voice. You never know the wondrous ways He may want to use you for His glory!

Being anointed by God is the highest honor for a Christian believer. Although it comes with great responsibility, the privilege of carrying out the very purpose of God makes it worthwhile.

If you believe God may be calling you into an anointed ministry, sincerely seek Him in prayer and wise counsel to confirm His will for your life. Stay prepared through diligent study of Scripture, surrounding yourself with faith-filled people, and maintaining an intimate prayer life with God.

What Does It Mean to Be Anointed?

To be anointed is to be set apart, empowered, or protected. Many can be anointed, but there is a single Anointed One who made it possible for all. You may have heard a comment like this at your local church service: “The anointing is strong today!” or “I can feel the anointing in this place.” It is valid curiosity to wonder if this is often misused, or if an “anointing” is something that is transferable. You might even see church leaders “anointing” members with oil. Is this valid and Biblical? Let’s explore the concept of anointing further.

The Meaning of Anointed

The act of “anointing” or “being anointed” is being smeared or rubbed with oil as part of a religious ceremony to make someone or something sacred. The Greek meaning of “ anoint ” is made up of two words: chrio  which means “to smear or rub oil”, and aleipho , which means “to anoint.” In Hebrew, the term masah  has secular connections, such as rubbing a shield with oil, smearing paint on a house, or anointing the body with oil. More about the original definition and usage here .

Regardless of the origin definition or usage, the intent of anointing is to set apart a person, place, or thing for divine use. It is meant to empower people to accomplish God’s work, for protection, or to describe the Messiah’s deliverance.

Where Is the Term "Anointed" Used in the Bible?

There are verses connected to each of the four uses of anointing listed above:

2 Kings 9:6 - “So Jehu left the others and went into the house. Then the young prophet poured the oil over Jehu’s head and said, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I anoint you king over the Lord’s people, Israel.’”

Genesis 28:18 - “So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.”

Empowering People

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 - “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

1 Chronicles 16:21-22 - “He allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account, saying, ‘Touch not my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!’”

James 5:14 - “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

The Anointed One

Psalm 89:51 - “The taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.”

Who Is the "Anointed One" Mentioned in the Bible?

Acts 10:38 says, “And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” Jesus wasn’t the only anointed one, though, as seen through David’s Psalm above. The anointed one could have been anyone appointed by God to be set apart or to carry out a task.

While many could be anointed, Jesus is the mashiyach , or the Messiah, the ultimate anointed one. He is our deliverer, and the bridge that empowers all Christians to be empowered to carry on his works. If it weren’t for Jesus’s work, God would not have sent the “helper,” or the holy spirit. Without Jesus, our reach in carrying out God’s work would have been limited.

Can Other People Be Anointed?

Many Christians believe that the power is in the oil itself. While the oil is a symbol of God’s protection and blessing, the power itself is of a calling from God to carry out the work of His heart here on Earth. Anything that goes outside of the word or the fruit of the spirit ( Galatians 5:22 ) is not of God and should not be anointed as such.

How Should Christians View Jesus as the Anointed One Today?

Jesus is the pioneer for man and should be viewed as the one who anoints. He is the greatest of these. He is the bridge that led to the holy spirit being imparted to us. He said in John 14:12 , “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” The works that Jesus was doing was spreading hope, sharing love, giving healing, and these are the very things He called us to do. In John 14:26 , He said, “But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

As our example, we can look to his demonstration in Luke 7:45-46 as the path to carrying out this great empowerment. Here, an “immoral” woman from the city, apparently full of guilt, approached Jesus while he was having dinner. He shares a valuable lesson here about forgiveness when Simon questions Jesus’ involvement with the woman. In the verse, Jesus tells Simon, “You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.”

To anoint means to choose by divine intervention. Or at least it seems like the big guy upstairs had something to do with it.

Saints and religious leaders are said to be anointed, but so is that new unstoppable quarterback who saved the team midseason. Anoint comes to us from the ancient Latin word unguere , which means "to smear." Which explains the other sense of this word, which is to apply with oil or another smearable substance, such as during a religious ceremony.

Anointed

The concept of being “anointed” carries deep spiritual significance within the Christian faith , symbolizing a person’s sanctification, empowerment, and consecration for a divine purpose. This sacred act, rich in historical and theological implications, has been a cornerstone in biblical narratives and Christian practices, guiding the faithful in understanding their calling and relationship with God.

What Does it Mean to be Anointed?

In a biblical context, to be “anointed” signifies being set apart and empowered by God for a specific role or task. This consecration often involves the application of oil, a practice rooted in ancient rituals symbolizing blessing and the Holy Spirit’s presence. Anointing marked individuals for divine purposes, from kings and prophets to priests, indicating their direct appointment by God for His service.

The Biblical Foundations of Anointing

The act of anointing is extensively documented in the Bible, from Old Testament figures like King David to New Testament references highlighting Jesus Christ as “the Anointed One” (Messiah in Hebrew, Christos in Greek). Anointed meaning in the Bible encompasses both literal and metaphorical layers, representing not only physical anointment with oil but also spiritual anointment with the Holy Spirit ( 1 John 2:27 ), indicating divine approval and guidance.

Scripture outlines different contexts and purposes for anointing, reflecting its multifaceted significance:

  • Ceremonial Anointing: Used in the consecration of kings, priests, and prophets, symbolizing their divine appointment and empowerment for leadership and ministry.
  • Healing Anointing: In New Testament times, anointing with oil was also associated with healing and compassion , representing God’s care and presence in times of sickness.
  • Spiritual Anointing: All believers are considered “anointed” by the Holy Spirit, equipped for God’s work, and sanctified for his purposes.

The Power and Purpose Behind Anointing

Anointing elevates individuals for divine service, distinguishing them as vessels chosen by God. It’s not merely a human decision but a reflection of divine selection and empowerment. Being anointed by God imbues individuals with spiritual gifts, guidance, and the authority to perform their God-given tasks.

The Impact of Divine Anointing

When a person is anointed, they receive a unique empowerment from the Holy Spirit, enabling them to fulfill their divine calling effectively. Anointed individuals often exhibit spiritual wisdom, strength, and capabilities beyond their natural abilities, underscoring the transformative power of God’s anointing.

Meaning of the word Anointed

What does "anointed" mean? Is there a difference between the Old Testament definition and the New Testament?

  • 1 A very good question. This might be better asked on Bible Hermeneutics but you will need to ask the question from a particular text of scripture to be on-topic. It is a huge subject - as you say, covering both old and new testament and appearing in many (if not all) books of the bible. –  Nigel J Commented Aug 21, 2018 at 12:47

There are 2 types of anointing..

According to Bible Study Tools , anointing, in Holy Scripture, is either material (with oil) or spiritual (with the Holy Ghost), and it doesn't seem to be different between the old and new testaments with material anointing, but there are slight differences with the spiritual anointing.

Material Anointing

In an ordinary sense.

Anointing the body or head with oil was a common practice with the Jews, as with other Oriental nations. (Deuteronomy 28:40 ; Ruth 3:3 ; Micah 6:15) Anointing the head with oil or ointment seems also to have been a mark of respect sometimes paid by a host to his guests. (Luke 7:46 and Psalms 23:5)

In an official sense

It was a rite of inauguration into each of the three typical offices of the Jewish commonwealth.

  • Prophets were occasionally anointed to their office, (1 Kings 19:16) and were called messiahs, or anointed. (1 Chronicles 16:22 ; Psalms 105:15)
  • Priests, at the first institution of the Levitical priesthood, were all anointed to their offices, (Exodus 40:15 ; Numbers 3:3) but afterwards anointing seems to have been specially reserved for the high priest, (Exodus 29:29 ; Leviticus 16:32) so that "the priest that is anointed," (Leviticus 4:3) is generally thought to mean the high priest.
  • Anointing was the principal and divinely-appointed ceremony in the inauguration of the Jewish Kings. (1 Samuel 9:16 & 10:1 ; 1 Kings 1:34 & 39 ) The rite was sometimes performed more than once. David was anointed three times.
  • Inanimate objects also were anointed with oil, in token of their being set apart for religious service. Jacob anointed a pillar at Bethel. (Genesis 31:13 ; Exodus 30:26-28)

In an ecclesiastical sense

Anointing with oil is prescribed by St. James to be used for the recovery of the sick. (James 5:14) Analogous to this is the anointing with oil practiced by the twelve. (Mark 6:13)

Spiritual Anointing

In the Old Testament a Deliverer is promised under the title of Messiah, or Anointed, (Psalms 2:2 ; Daniel 9:25-26 ) and the nature of his anointing is described to be spiritual, with the Holy Ghost. (Isaiah 61:1) In the New Testament Jesus of Nazareth is shown to be the Messiah (Luke 4:18-19), or Christ or Anointed, of the Old Testament, (John 1:41 ; Acts 9:22 ; Acts 17:2-3 ; Acts 18:4 & 28 ) and the historical fact of his being anointed with the Holy Ghost is asserted and recorded. (John 1:32-33 ; Acts 4:27 & 10:38) Christ was anointed as prophet priest and king.

Spiritual anointing with the Holy Ghost is conferred also upon Christians by God. (2 Corinthians 1:21)

"Anointing" expresses the sanctifying influences of the Holy Spirit upon Christians who are priests and kings to God.

  • good answer, how about the anointing of King Solomon? is the "Wisdom" that Solomon seeks is a form of God's "anointing"?You mentioned the Messiah anointing is spiritual, would it be the same with Solomon the "Wisdom" is his anointing as this is a spiritual gifts or attributed to the Holy Ghost? –  jong ricafort Commented Aug 19, 2018 at 10:45

I found an article that explains the origins of anointing, which has to do with sheep! In order to prevent sheep from getting ear infections, oil would be poured into their ears, thus preventing insects from doing damage.

In Bible times, people were anointed with oil to signify God’s blessing or call upon that person’s life (Exodus 29:7; Exodus 40:9; 2 Kings 9:6; Ecclesiastes 9:8; James 5:14). A person was anointed for a special purpose—to be a king, to be a prophet, to be a builder, etc. The meaning of the word Christ is “Anointed One.” Jesus was “set apart” as God’s Servant (see Isaiah 42:1).

This is part of what the article said about the Greek words/meaning for anoint:

The New Testament Greek words for “anoint” are chrio, which means “to smear or rub with oil” and, by implication, “to consecrate for office or religious service”; and aleipho, which means “to anoint.” Another meaning for the word anointed is "chosen one." The Bible says that Jesus Christ was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the Good News and free those who have been held captive by sin (Luke 4:18-19; Acts 10:38). After Christ left the earth, He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16). Now all Christians are anointed, chosen for a specific purpose in furthering God's Kingdom (1 John 2:20). "Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee" (2 Corinthians 1:21-22). Will see if I can find anything on the Hebrew definition of anointing.

Edit: The NIV Study Bible (1985) makes this comment about the word 'anointed' in Isaiah 45:1: "Messiah comes from the Hebrew for anointed." The NLT Study Bible (2008) says that the designation, "anointed one" as it was applied to Cyrus (in Isaiah 45:1) means "Cyrus was anointed in the sense that he was selected to fulfill a special mission. This title was never used of any other foreign ruler." The ESV Study Bible (2008) comments that Cyrus was "God's instrument for His purposes."

What does annointed mean?

If you simply don't understand the word:

The English word seems to come from old French where the word means: "To apply an ointment".

In the Catholic church still today an ointment is applied to a person in many rites; for example immediately after the baptism an ointment is applied to the forehead of the baptized person.

If you don't understand the meaning behind this word I can repeat what I have heard from a theologian:

Prophets and king David were anointed: There was a rite where an ointment was applied to some spot on their skin.

This application of ointment was a symbol that God gave the authority to these people and therefore these people are not allowed to fulfill their own wishes but that they must fulfill the will of God.

So when Jewish people were talking about an "anointed" person (especially: a king) they meant a person whose authority comes from God and who fulfills God's will instead of fulfilling his (or her) own wishes.

Especially in times when kings and other politicians were selfish and or corrupt the Jewish people wished that these people were "anointed" people instead - people who got their authority from God and who do what God wants.

(The fact that an ointment was applied was of course not important.)

Is there a difference between the Old Testament definition and the New Testament?

I don't think so.

However the situation in the time the New Testament is writing about was more terrible than in the times before:

King Herod (73-4 B.C.) for example was what we would call a "violent dictator" today. He killed thousands of people just for fun. His successors were not much better.

So the wish for authorities coming directly from God must have been very strong in these times.

What Is the Anointing of the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit and Us – Question 13

The Bible speaks of the “anointing” of the Holy Spirit. What does this mean? Who has been “anointed” with the Spirit? The Bible has the following things to say.

John Said All Believers Have Been Anointed with the Holy Spirit

The Apostle John told his readers that they all had been anointed with the Holy Spirit. He explained it in this way.

But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.. But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything–and is true and is no lie, just as it has taught you–abide in him ( 1 John 2:20 , 27 ESV ).

Those who have believed in Jesus Christ have received this anointing.

Paul Refers to the Anointing of the Holy Spirit

The only other reference in the New Testament to the anointing of the Spirit for the believer is found in the writings of the Apostle Paul. He wrote the following to the Corinthians.

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us ( 2 Corinthians 1:21 ESV ).

Paul wrote that each believer had received the anointing of the Spirit.

Jesus Himself Was Anointed with the Holy Spirit

We also find that Jesus Himself was anointed with the Spirit. When He began His public ministry Jesus read a passage from Isaiah.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free ( Luke 4:18 NRSV)

Jesus claimed that this prediction was fulfilled by Him. Luke records Him doing the following after reading this passage.

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” ( Luke 4:20 , 21 TNIV).

The anointed of the Spirit was upon Jesus. Furthermore, this anointing was upon Him during His entire earthly ministry.

Later Peter would tell the people about Jesus’ anointing. He explained it in this manner.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him ( Acts 10:38 NKJV ).

In this context the anointing of Jesus was for the work of the ministry.

The Meaning of the Anointing

What is the “anointing?” Some see the anointing of the Spirit as another way of saying the believer has already received the Holy Spirit while others think it is a special ministry that the Spirit of God has in the life of each believer.

Observations about the Anointing of the Holy Spirit

From these verses, we can observe the following about the anointing of the Spirit.

1. God Does the Anointing

It is God who anoints the believer with His Holy Spirit. We do not anoint ourselves. Thus, it is entirely a work of God.

2. The Anointing Remains Forever

This “anointing” of the Holy Spirit remains forever with the believer. It never leaves those who receive it.

3. The Purpose of the Anointing Is to Teach Us

The purpose of this anointing of the Holy Spirit is that the believer might be taught of God. He anoints us to teach us His truths so that we can please Him by doing the work of the ministry.

4. He Helps in Understanding the Word of God

We find that the Holy Spirit anoints the believer in spiritual discernment and the understanding of the Word of God. In fact, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be the Teacher of those who believed in Him. On the night of His betrayal, Jesus said.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you ( John 14:26 ESV ).

The Holy Spirit was promised to teach Jesus disciples as well as bring back all of His words to their remembrance.

Jesus also said the Spirit, as their Teacher, would guide them into “all truth.” He also gave His disciples this promise.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come ( John 16:13 NRSV).

Thus, the anointing of the Spirit teaches us the truths of God.

5. People May Be Anointed with a Special Ministry

Like in the case of Jesus, the Holy Spirit may indeed anoint certain people to do a particular ministry. In other words, they have been given certain abilities to perform God’s work in a unique way. We can thus properly speak of that person as having been “anointed” of the Spirit to perform this task. Again, this is something which God alone does. We do not “anoint” ourselves for the ministry.

In sum, the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is another provision that God gives to us so that we can better serve Him.

Summary – Question 13 What Is the Anointing of the Holy Spirit?

Scripture speaks of believers in Jesus Christ as being anointed with the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself claimed that He was “anointed” by the Lord to do the work of the ministry. The Apostle Peter later confirmed the anointing of Jesus. Therefore, we find that Jesus was anointed with the Spirit and all believers are anointed with the Spirit of God. What does this mean?

Several things are clear about the anointing of the Spirit.

First, Scripture indicates that all believers have been anointed by the Holy Spirit. There are no exceptions to this.

Second we do not anoint ourselves. God is the one who anoints us. Thus, the anointing of the Holy Spirit is completely God’s work on our behalf.

In addition, this anointing never leaves us. Indeed, it remains with us forever.

So what is the anointing? From Scripture, we find that the anointing ministry of the Holy Spirit is for the purpose of teaching and imparting spiritual power to believers. It is that work of the Holy Spirit which teaches us the truths of God so that we can better understand who He is and what He wants from us. As mentioned, each and every believer receives this anointing.

There is something else to consider. While each believer has received the anointing of the Spirit it is possible that God will anoint, or equip, certain Christians with a special ministry to fulfill. Thus, we can properly say that this person has been “anointed” with the Spirit to fulfill this task.

Again, it is God who anoints the believer with the Spirit –believers do not anoint themselves. The anointing may refer to the initial reception of the Holy Spirit or some special ministry of the Spirit. Whatever the case may be, each of us who have believed in Jesus has been anointed by the Holy Spirit.

What Does Messiah Mean?

anointed on definition

In Old Testament times, prophets, priests, and kings were anointed by oil when they were set apart for these positions of responsibility. The anointing was a sign that God had chosen them and consecrated them for the work He had given them to do.

Christos (Christ) is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew term, Messiah (John 1:41). When Andrew, a disciple of John the Baptist, became acquainted with Jesus, the first thing he did was to find his brother, Simon Peter, and tell him about his exciting discovery. He told his brother, “ ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated, the Christ). And he [Andrew] brought him [Peter] to Jesus” (John 1:41).

Overlooking the Messiah

What did Andrew mean when he said, “We have found the Messiah?” When Jesus came to earth to live with us and be our Savior, the Jewish people were looking for God to send a Messiah—an anointed, chosen one. They had read the Old Testament prophecies (Isaiah 42:1; 61:1-3; Psalm 16, 22, Daniel 9, etc.) that promised God would send a deliverer to save His people. Unfortunately, they misunderstood what this Messiah would do.

They read the prophecies of how the Messiah would overcome God’s enemies—and they understood this to mean that he would deliver them from their Roman masters. They expected him to set up a kingdom on earth—a kingdom in which they would be the rulers, not the ruled.

They overlooked the Messiah’s spiritual role as a deliverer from sin and Satan. They didn’t understand that His kingdom was spiritual, not political. As a result, few were prepared to accept Jesus as the promised Messiah. He didn’t fit their ideas of what the Messiah would do.

Some, however, saw beneath the surface and recognized Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah—God’s anointed, chosen One to save them from sin. It became their purpose to share this wonderful insight with others. As he closed his Gospel, the apostle John summarized the message he had been trying to get across. He wrote, “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ [the Messiah], the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30, 31).

Jesus the Messiah

Communication

The Gospels repeatedly declare that Jesus is the Messiah—the One chosen by God and anointed by Him to save His people from their sins (Matthew 16:16; Luke 4:17-21; John 1:40-49; 4:25, 26). After Jesus’ resurrection, the apostle Peter reminded those listening to him “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And we,” Peter said, “are witnesses of all things which He did” (Acts 10:38, 39).

Jesus Himself claimed to be the promised Messiah. When He talked with a woman at a well in Samaria, she said, “ ‘I know that Messiah is coming’ (who is called Christ). ‘When He comes, He will tell us all things.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He’ ” (John 4:25, 26).

Today, Jesus is still the Messiah—God’s chosen, anointed One who came to deliver us from sin and Satan. As the Messiah, He offers you forgiveness for your sins. He promises you salvation and a place in His coming kingdom. “Come to Me,” He urges, “. . . and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28, 29).
