Don't delay the rejection. Once you've decided to move forward with a specific candidate, notify rejected applicants as soon as possible. Remember that they may also be pursuing other open positions, so you're doing them a favor by letting them know that your company's job has been filled.

You can send the rejection via email rather than by regular mail service. While a mailed letter might seem more formal, most candidates will appreciate receiving the news as soon as possible – and email is always quicker.

Keep your rejection letters short. No candidate wants to read through a lengthy explanation about why they didn't measure up to expectations. At the same time, though, your letter should include enough detail to ensure that you explain the decision.

Try to be as positive as possible. The rejection will be disappointing for the candidate, so there's no need to pile on with negative feedback or other criticism.

As a rule, keep your letter limited to no more than three short paragraphs. The first one can simply thank them for their interest and let them know that you've decided not to hire them. 

The second paragraph can include some positive affirmation, by focusing on anything that impressed you during their interview, and perhaps cite a reason why they've been rejected. If you might consider them for a different job in the future, tell them that too. 

Finally, your third paragraph should simply thank them again and wish them well in their efforts to land the right job in the future.

  • Keep it straightforward. Don’t make the applicant letters long-winded. Keep it professional and to-the-point.
  • Personalize your applicant rejection letters. Use the candidate’s name and position and, if they attended an interview, make a comment about their performance.
  • Be gracious. As well as being professional, you should also be gracious. The person applied for a job at your business because they wanted to work with you, so make sure that your applicant rejection letter is respectful and considerate.
  • Be honest. It may be tempting to say things you don’t mean in your applicant rejection letter. So, keep things simple. For example, don’t include that you want the candidate to apply for more openings going forward if you know that the person isn’t a good fit for your business.
  • Be swift. When you know an applicant isn’t suitable for the role, don’t wait a long time before sending a rejection letter. Do it as soon as possible, so they will concentrate their efforts elsewhere.

The structure of the job applicant rejection letter

You should have a structure for all of your job candidate rejection letters. This will enable you to say what you need to quickly and efficiently as well as sticking to your company’s brand. Use the following information when formatting a job applicant rejection letter:

  • ‍Address. Start the sample letter for rejecting a candidate with the official address of your business in the top right hand corner. You need to include your address only if you’re sending a physical letter. ‍
  • Date. A few lines under the address, include the date. You don’t need to do this if you’re sending an email.‍
  • Inside address. The candidate’s address goes a few lines underneath the date. ‍
  • Subject. Use a subject line  that is short and to-the-point. For example, the candidate’s name – job application.‍
  • Salutation. How formal or informal your salutation is will depend on your company and whether you’ve met the applicant. If you’ve met them in an interview and have developed a rapport, you can go on a first name basis, for example, “Dear Jane.” ‍

  • The body. Use this part of the job candidate rejection letter to inform the applicant that they were not successful at this time. You can give reasons or just let them know that other candidates were more suitable and matched the job description better .‍
  • Last paragraph. How you use this last paragraph depends on your company’s policies. Some companies use it to give more detailed advice about the application while others simply note that, if the job applicant wants more detailed feedback, they can make a request.‍
  • Closing. Keep this short and to-the-point. Thank the candidate for their time and wish them the best in their future job search.‍

You never know—one of your now-rejected candidates may be an excellent fit for one of your roles in the future!

Before the pandemic, every corporate job attracted about 250 applicants . Of those, anywhere between four and six would make it to the final interview, and only one would get the job. In a post-pandemic world, there are over 12.6 million unemployed people in the United States alone. That means the number of applicants is even higher. So are the rejections that go with them.

When you’re rejecting so many candidates every day, it starts to get challenging to remain human. You get desensitized and may even forget that the people you are dealing with on the other end are just that: people.

Now, more than ever, it’s essential to be kind. Check yourself before you respond to any applicant, no matter what their stage. Here’s a checklist you can use to go through your responses and craft templates that work the best for your company and help your candidates still feel valued, even in rejection.

Start your day  with great  quality  content

Best practices for rejecting applicants.

If you can create a template to use and regularly modify for each of your candidates, it will make each rejection letter a bit easier and a bit more straightforward. Consider the following best practices as you go and create something that works perfectly for you and your team.

1. Let them know quickly

Many people like to wait until they’ve found or hired the best candidate before notifying any other candidates that they won’t be moving forward. Don’t do that. As soon as you know that the person you’re reviewing or talking to isn’t the best candidate for your team, let them know. Depending on where they are in the interview process, this can be via email or phone. If they’re just in the beginning stages of application review or a phone screen, you’re good to email. Beyond that: give them the courtesy of a phone call.

2. Personalize your rejection

Templates make things much more manageable and assure that you address everything that you need to in each rejection. Leave sections in your templates for personalization. Mention the candidate’s name in the opening and sign the message with your own. Take ownership over the rejection , rather than just hiding behind your company’s name. If you’ve spoken with them or they’ve gone through the process, mention something from your conversation if you can . Providing personal details helps the candidate feel like they are more than just a number to you and can soften the rejection blow.

3. Make it short and sweet

No one wants to read a novel about why they aren’t getting a job . Keep your rejection letter short and sweet. One to two paragraphs that include all of the critical information will suffice. Let them know that they won’t be moving forward, that you appreciated their time , add any additional information that you feel is necessary, and then move on. If they reach back out for more information, try to keep that quick and concise as well.

4. Be honest

If you can be honest in your rejection, people won’t have to reach back out and ask why they aren’t moving forward. Take time to chat with your HR or People team about what you can or can’t share regarding constructive insights. Try to offer as much information as you can, though. It will help create a better impression of your company with the candidate and help them move forward. The more insights you can offer, the more potential they have for their next interview to be the one that works out.

Ask for insights on your process

Just like they’re curious about what could have gone better, you should be too. Ask people that run through your process what they liked and didn’t like. Ask them what felt awkward or if there was anything that you could have improved. By asking for insights, you show them that you value their experience, but you also get the opportunity to hear different perspectives on how you could improve your interview process.

The type of response you send after the phone screen versus after a conversation with them should be different. Similarly, you should call them if you’ve had an interview or taken a substantial amount of their time.

If you’ve reviewed their credentials, scheduled a phone screen, and then decided that they aren’t a good fit, the template changes slightly:

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me and for allowing us to consider you for a position with [Company]. While you have an impressive background [note something that you liked about your conversation], we have ultimately decided to move forward with other candidates for the role.

I’m happy to stay in touch should anything change or other opportunities with us come about that might fit your background as we continue to scale.

When rejecting a candidate after a longer-form interview or conversation, it’s a best practice to reach out over the phone. Lead your discussion off by letting them know that you won’t be moving forward.

Continue by saying that you appreciate their time and energy and keep them in mind for future roles. If you’d like to, follow up with them via email with something like the following:

Everyone knows the Golden Rule: treat others as you’d like to be treated . That goes doubly when you’re rejecting candidates in a hot job market. Writing a rejection letter can be confusing sometimes since it’s a failure notification to a wide group of job applicants. Among which you truly know that some would not receive such notification if you were to increase the number of your intakes. It’s a notification that must be circulated to every unsuccessful applicant.

Rejection letters are important to notify the applicants that they have been screened out, appreciate their efforts, and motivate them while also encouraging them to apply again when there’s another job opening. Sending rejection letters to unsuccessful applicants will also show high professionalism, protect your company from discrimination and also provide the feedback for the candidate’s improvement.

Three steps are paramount when writing a rejection letter; make it brief, considerate, and straight. It is important to understand that the applicant will be disappointed, no matter how you paint your words. However, a well-composed rejection letter can reduce the heartbreak while also encouraging the applicant to keep up with his or her job search.

The following tips will guide you to prepare a standard and well-written rejection letter.

  • Use your company’s letter heading
  • Plan to make the letter brief
  • Address the candidate with his or her name in the salutation

Are you a job seeker wondering if you will be notified if a company opts not to hire you after they have interviewed you to evaluate your candidacy? Or are you a  hiring manager  who needs to let a candidate know that they weren't hired?

Even though the appropriate protocol is to notify all the candidates that employers interview for a job, this, unfortunately, doesn’t always happen. Employers aren't required to notify applicants, even though it's courteous to inform candidates who haven't been selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Employers don’t always provide applicants with the courtesy of letting them know where they stand in the  hiring process , though some do provide status updates to candidates.

  • Some employers let every candidate know the status of their application.
  • Some companies notify applicants who haven’t been accepted for an interview, while others only contact candidates they wish to discuss the job with.
  • Some employers don’t even notify applicants who interview that they weren’t  selected for a second interview  or the job.
  • Other companies may send rejection letters to applicants who are not selected for a position after the interview process is complete.

You may not receive a letter directly after your interview, if the organization notifies applicants.

Many employers wait until they have hired someone for the job before notifying the other candidates.

That’s because they may want to give the applicant pool another look if their leading candidate rejects their job offer.

What is Included in a Rejection Letter Sent After a Job Interview

If you do receive a rejection letter, don’t expect it to include a reason why you weren’t offered a job. Employers are concerned about discrimination issues.

Reasons for rejecting an applicant could be construed as discriminatory if they are based on age, gender, national origin, religion, marital status, pregnancy, or disability.

It’s safer, from a legal perspective, for companies to write a simple rejection letter that thanks the interviewee for taking the time to meet with the hiring manager. If the company is interested in considering an applicant for other openings, the letter may state that as well.

What to Do if You Don’t Hear From an Employer

What is the best way to handle it, if you don’t hear back from an interviewer? It’s appropriate to  follow up on the status of your application , especially if you are juggling multiple job applications or offers or need to make an immediate decision on another job offer.

Following up  immediately after an interview with a thank-you email is a particularly effective strategy, since this allows you to remind the employer of your qualifications, answer any questions you feel were not fully addressed in the interview, and keep you “top of mind” as employers make their hiring decision.

It is also fine to contact the employer with a second email or phone call after two or three weeks, if you still have not heard from them.

Keep in mind that you may not receive a response. So, while you're waiting, be sure to continue to proactively job hunt.

Don't consider your job search complete until you've received—and accepted—a job offer.

Inform Them as Soon as Possible

Inform the candidate that you won’t hire them as soon as you decide. Providing immediate notice is respectful and informs them to proceed with their job search.

Quick turnaround times show your organization understands the competitive job market and empathizes with people looking to further their careers.

Personalize Your Communication

Tailor the messaging if possible. Write the candidate’s name, the position they applied for, and something specific from their application or interview.

Including a reference from the interaction shows your thoughtfulness as a recruiter or manager.

You can also include personalized feedback and pointers if you have ways for the candidate to improve their performance. Delicately point out areas where they excelled during the interview and ways to polish other elements.

Keep the Letter Concise

Briefly highlight key reasons the organization respectfully selected another applicant. Then, point out the person’s strengths and areas of feedback about possible resume growth.

Demonstrate Compassion and Respect

Choose your words carefully to respect the person’s professional dedication. Indicate you’d be open to considering their candidacy after they garner more experience or credentials.

Offer Context

Losing out on a position can be a challenging experience for a candidate. However, job hunters may feel more hopeful when the employment rejection letter notes the approximate number of applicants and their experience. It can also remove some of the candidate’s ill feelings about the lost opportunity.

Wish Them Well

Express professional understanding and a sense you want others to succeed. State that you wish the candidate well in securing a good position.

Step 1 – Format as a Formal Business Letter

Format the document as a formal business letter. Write your information in the upper right-hand corner, including your name and address. Detail the date you’re writing the letter and the applicant’s name and address on the upper left-hand side of the page.

Personalize the letter to the person instead of sending an identical document to several rejected applicants.

Step 2 – Use a Standard Salutation

Use a typical salutation such as “Dear [First and Last Name]” to begin your letters. This simple addition ensures they know they’re the intended recipient.

Step 3 – Thank the Applicant

The first sentence should thank the applicant for their time and application. Consider using a sentence such as “We greatly appreciate your application and your interest in our company” or “Thank you for applying for the position of [Position Name].”

Thank the applicant for their effort, but don’t make promises of future consideration.

Step 4 – State the Reason for the Rejection

Consider stating the reason for the rejection, like if you decided to move forward with a different candidate or the applicant didn’t have enough experience.

Step 5 – Include Your Closing Statements

The final paragraph should encourage the employee to apply again in the future if you desire or say your goodbyes. Keep these statements concise, as simple statements can prevent any miscommunication.

You may also:

  • Communicate your intent to keep the applicant in the hiring pool for the future.
  • Encourage the applicant to apply for a different position.
  • Ask that they apply again when they meet the qualifications for the position.

Format the end of the letter how you want to fit your individual needs. Consider requesting feedback from the candidate on the hiring process so you can pinpoint weaknesses and make improvements.

Step 6 – Sign the Letter

A company representative should personally sign the letter and provide their title. This addition gives a personal touch to the letter that demonstrates your care.

When you’re ready to hire your successful applicant, use an employment contract to make it official.

Here are various examples of rejection letters depending on the situation:

Generic Rejection Letter

It often does not provide specific feedback or reasons for the rejection, as it aims to maintain a professional and neutral tone.

Dear Frances Obel,

Thank you for expressing your interest in the Occupational Therapist position at St. Mark and Matthew’s Hospital.

After thoroughly reviewing your application, we regret to inform you that we have chosen to move forward with candidates whose qualifications more closely align with the specific requirements in the job description. In particular, we are looking for someone with at least three years of experience in a pediatric setting.

While we recognize your interest in joining St. Mark and Matthew’s Hospital, we want to express our gratitude for your application and the time you invested in the process. We encourage you to explore other opportunities with us in the future that may be a better match for your skills and experience.

“The Wire” star went on a Twitter tirade on Monday, June 3, in response to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ recent ruling against the Fearless Fund’s contest, which awards grants to Black women-owned businesses. There has been widespread backlash in response to the ruling, with many crediting it to conservative-led attacks against DEI programs.

Critics include Pierce, who sent out a series of tweets related to the ruling and its implications for Black Americans.

“A private investment firm, the Fearless Fund, has been blocked from investing in businesses owned by Black women. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 ruling, sided with a challenge to the grant program, arguing it violated a Reconstruction-era civil-rights law, known as Section 1981, that prohibits discrimination in contracts,” Pierce tweeted.

“The law was put in place to protect former slaves from discrimination. Edward Blum, an opponent of affirmative action, has argued its text means that race can’t be considered at all in contractual relationships. Private funding blocked by the courts. NOT TAX DOLLARS.”

He continued. “Private investment into Black businesses being blocked with laws in place to prevent discrimination against Black businesses. The racist irony. Racist, bigoted, fascist Americans who burned down Black Wall Street in Tulsa 100 years ago are still alive and well.”

While venting his frustrations against the recent court ruling, Pierce revealed the racism he experienced at the hands of a white landlord who denied his rental application despite his success and fame as a working actor. According to the “Selma” actor, regardless of his current appearance in two televised series and filming the upcoming “Superman” movie, Pierce’s application to rent an apartment in Harlem was denied.

“For those of you who don’t understand my righteous anger; I’m on 2 TV series, ELSBETH and RAISING KANAN. I’m filming SUPERMAN. Two years ago, I finished the fourth season of JACK RYAN. Last year I finished a run on Broadway in DEATH OF A SALESMAN,” he shared.

“Even with my proof of employment, bank statements, and real estate holdings, a white apartment owner DENIED my application to rent the apartment…..in Harlem, of all places.”

He credited the experience to the “racism” and bigotry that continue to run rampant in a country built off the institution of slavery.

“Racism and bigots are real. There are those who will do anything to destroy life’s journey for Black folks. When you deny our personal experiences, you are as vile and despicable,” Pierce wrote.

Pierce is among the many expressing their outrage toward Monday’s ruling against the Atlanta-based Fearless Fund. The motion marks another victory for conservative groups who have launched a nationwide legal campaign against corporate diversity programs that impact numerous companies and government institutions.

Many joined Pierce in calling out the injustices surrounding the court’s ruling against the Fearless Fund.

“In other words, we can’t use exclusive tools for Black people to address exclusive racism and discrimination against Black people unless those tools are also available to the segment of people who’s racially motivated discrimination is currently causing them to ban books, erase history, disenfranchise voters, and limit freedoms,” one person wrote in response.

Medtronic Recalls StealthStation S8 Application Versions 1.2.0, 1.1.0, 1.0.3, 1.0.2, and 1.0.1 for Software Error that May Cause Incorrect Measurements During Cranial Surgery

Please be aware, this recall is a correction, not a product removal.

The FDA has identified this as a Class I recall, the most serious type of recall. Use of these devices may cause serious injuries or death.

The StealthStation System with StealthStation Cranial software is intended as an aid for locating anatomical structures during neurosurgery (treatment of diseases or disorders of the brain and spine). The StealthStation is indicated for use in any medical condition where stereotactic surgery of the brain or spine may be appropriate and where reference to a rigid anatomical structure, such as the skull, can be identified in relation to images of the anatomy. Cranial procedures using the StealthStation System with StealthStation Cranial software may include:

  • Tumor resections
  • General ventricular catheter placement
  • Pediatric ventricular catheter placement
  • Depth electrode, lead, and probe placement
  • Cranial biopsies

Reason for Recall

Medtronic is recalling the StealthStation S8 Application Versions 1.2.0, 1.1.0, 1.0.3, 1.0.2, and 1.0.1 after customer complaints about a software error causing numbers or letters to be missing from the displayed text and replaced by a space, in either the "distance to target" or "tip stop point" display during navigation. The missing digit may result in the mechanical depth stop being set too short or too long and may cause the surgeon to use an incorrect measurement for placement of the biopsy tip stop during navigation.

Performing a cranial procedure using incorrect placement could lead to serious permanent injuries, including brain, nerve, or cerebrovascular damage, abnormal functions to the brain, spine, or muscles, paralysis, or death. Medtronic reports 28 complaints related to this issue. There have been no reported injuries or deaths.

Who May Be Affected

  • People who may receive cranial surgery using the StealthStation S8 with Software Application Versions 1.2.0, 1.1.0, 1.0.3, 1.0.2, and 1.0.1  
  • Surgeons who perform surgical procedures using the StealthStation S8 with Software Application Versions 1.2.0, 1.1.0, 1.0.3, 1.0.2, and 1.0.1. 

On April 10, 2024, Medtronic issued an Urgent Medical Device Correction letter stating that the company will work to coordinate a software update at no charge to resolve the error. The letter also included the following required actions for customers:

  • Review the correction information with all physician users.
  • Complete the enclosed confirmation form to verify that this notification has been communicated to all physician users.
  • Send the completed Customer Confirmation Form to Medtronic by email at [email protected] .
  • Pass the notice on to those who need to be aware within the organization or to any organization where potentially affected devices have been transferred.
  • Maintain a copy of the notice in facility records.

This page provides details on the updates being made to NIH institutional training grant applications for due dates on or after January 25, 2025.

NIH has made significant investments to develop, implement, assess and disseminate innovative, effective approaches to  research training and mentoring and to prepare trainees for a variety of  career paths in the biomedical research workforce. Additionally, NIH established the  UNITE initiative to identify structural barriers and promote equity in the NIH-supported biomedical research ecosystem. Through these initiatives, the research community has identified the need for:

  • Broader outreach activities to foster awareness of research training opportunities for potential trainees from all backgrounds, including individuals from  underrepresented groups ,
  • Targeted recruitment activities to diversify training program applicant pools, and
  • Increased mentorship opportunities to facilitate trainee success (see  Re-envisioning NIH Supported Postdoctoral Training ;  UNITE Listening Sessions )

NIH will leverage the lessons of these initiatives to enhance institutional research training programs, including by enhancing opportunities to strengthen mentor training.

Applicability:

The updates will apply to applications that use the following activity codes:

  • Institutional Training – T series, e.g., T15, T32, T34, T35, T37, T90/R90, TL1, TL4
  • International Institutional Training – D43, D71, U2R
  • Institutional Career Development – K12, KL2

Application Updates

The updates to NIH Institutional Training Grant Applications include three key changes:

  • The Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity will be its own attachment in the PHS 398 Research Training Program Plan Form.
  • Mentor training expectations will be more clearly defined in the parent T32 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO).
  • Institutional Training data tables will be updated to reduce burden and promote consistent information collection across training programs.

Updates to PHS 398 Research Training Program Plan Form

The “Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity” will be moved from being nested within the Program Plan attachment to being a separate attachment within the  PHS 398 Research Training Plan Form . The Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity Attachment will:

  • Continue to be required for all training grant activity codes except U2R, and all D-series activity codes.
  • Have a three-page limit, consistent with the page limits for “Plan for Instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research” and “Plan for Instruction in Methods for Enhancing Reproducibility.”

Defining Mentor Training Expectations in Training Programs

The Parent T32 NOFO will incorporate new language outlining expectations for mentor training and oversight into the program considerations, application instructions, and review criteria.

Programs should consider the following, in addition to other evidence-informed curricula, as potential mentor training components and are encouraged to adapt to program and trainee needs:

  • Aligning expectations
  • Maintaining effective communication
  • Fostering independence
  • Assessing scholars’ understanding of scientific research
  • Enhancing professional development
  • Addressing equity and inclusion
  • Articulating your mentoring philosophy and plan

Reviewers will assess the mentor training expectations included in the application.

Updates to Data Tables

Institutional Training data tables will be updated to reduce burden, focus on trainee outcomes, and promote consistent information collection across training programs. For example:

  • Tables 1 and 2: Applicants will be expected to provide data only for the training stage(s) reflected in the proposed program.
  • Table 5 (Publications of Those in Training) will be reorganized so that the first column is the trainee (instead of the faculty member), and applicants will be allowed to include  interim research products to which the trainee contributed.
  • Table 6 (Applicants, Entrants, and their Characteristics for the Past Five Years) will no longer ask for trainee characteristics related to prior academic and research experience.
  • Table 8 (Program Outcomes: Predoctoral and Postdoctoral)   will no longer include Part II “Those Clearly Associated with the Training Grant.”

Peer Review Updates

Institutional training awards will retain the five scored review criteria.  For example, for Training Grants (Ts), reviewers will continue to score Training Program and Environment, Training Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s), Preceptors/Mentors, Trainees, and Training Record when determining the overall impact score.   

NIH will now include “Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research” and “Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity” as items that contribute to the overall impact score.  These items will move from “Additional Review Considerations” and will be included as “Additional Review Criteria.”  As such reviewers will evaluate the “Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research” and the “Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity” while determining scientific and technical merit, and in providing an overall impact score.

How Trump’s Most Loyal Supporters Are Responding to the Verdict

Many saw in the jury’s finding a rejection of themselves, of their values and even of democracy itself.

The sense of grievance erupted as powerfully as the verdict itself.

From the low hills of northwest Georgia to a veterans’ retreat in Alaska to suburban New Hampshire, the corners of conservative America resounded with anger over the New York jury’s declaration that former President Donald J. Trump was guilty.

But their discontent was about more than the 34 felony counts that Mr. Trump was convicted on, which his supporters quickly dismissed as politically motivated.

They saw in the jury’s finding a rejection of themselves, and the values they believed their nation should uphold. Broad swaths of liberal America may have found long-awaited justice in the trial’s outcome. But for many staunch Trump loyalists — people who for years have listened to and believed Mr. Trump’s baseless claims that the system is rigged against him, and them — the verdict on Thursday threatened to shatter their faith in democracy itself.

“We are at that crossroads. The democracy that we have known and cherished in this nation is now threatened,” Franklin Graham, the evangelist, said in an interview from Alaska. “I’ve got 13 grandchildren. What kind of nation are we leaving them?”

Echoing him was Marie Vast, 72, of West Palm Beach, Fla., near Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. “I know a lot of people who say they still believe in our government,” she said, “but when the Democrats can manipulate things this grossly, and use the legal system as a tool to get the outcome they want, the system isn’t working.”

Among more than two dozen people interviewed across 10 states on Friday, the sentiments among conservatives were so strong that they echoed the worry and fear that many progressives described feeling after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade almost two years ago.

The guilty verdict was “the dark spot of politics in America in my lifetime,” said Phillip Neff, 80, a retired businessman in Dalton, Ga. Mr. Trump “may be a clown in some ways, but he’s not a devil,” he said. “And I think what we’re facing right now is really a constitutional crisis.”

Perhaps even more than anger or fear, many of those interviewed described feeling a deep resolve. Cindy Swasey, 67, a retired office assistant in Dover, N.H., said the verdict had driven her straight to her computer, where she tried donating to the Trump campaign. (The computer or the campaign website crashed, she said, but she planned to follow through and send $50, her first-ever donation to a political candidate.)

“I’m not really wealthy enough to do it, but I felt almost obligated,” she said, “and I think it’s time we all do if we want to keep this country a democracy. I think people are waking up and realizing that the wealthy elitists are taking over the country.”

Paula Lopez, 52, a longtime Republican voter who works at a real estate firm in Dallas, said: “I wouldn’t use the word angry. I would use, I would use the word upset, but determined, you know? This isn’t going to stop us. It’s not going to stop him.”

Many others, like Ms. Lopez, said they were grappling with their faith in the legal system after Mr. Trump was convicted of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal that threatened to derail his 2016 presidential campaign.

For Woody Clendenen, a barber in Cottonwood, Calif., the verdict was either a “death knell for the Constitution” or a sign it was “on life support.” Others made comparisons to shocking disasters and turning points in history like the fall of Rome.

Willard Jones, 66, a retired veterinarian in La Porte, Texas, wondered if he could countenance serving on a jury in the future. “I’m just wondering, is our country like the Titanic?” he said, before giving Mr. Trump $20.24.

The belief that the Democrats and President Biden have corrupted the democratic system is nothing new to the Trump coalition. But for some, the verdict was the most egregious evidence to date, even though it was delivered by 12 jurors selected in the textbook manner of any criminal trial in America. And it made their support for Mr. Trump even stronger.

In Russellville, Ark., Bill and Becky Brown had not been paying much attention to the trial. “Why follow it?” Ms. Brown, 67, said at a food truck fair. “They’re going to find him guilty anyway.”

She added that “it makes me mad that I don’t feel like there’s anything we can do. The only thing is to get him back in.”

Mr. Brown said the couple had been stockpiling food and other supplies in case of possible civil unrest and the need to defend their home. “If Biden gets it again, I mean, I have a feeling the way everybody is, that’s going to be a major uproar,” he said. “A lot of people I know — they’re stocking up on arms, they’re stocking up on survival gear.”

But instead of mass protest, conservative voters generally said that they planned to find vindication through the November election by returning Mr. Trump to the White House.

Some described actions they hoped Mr. Trump would take if re-elected — actions that would defy the democratic system. “When Trump does get back in there, he’ll need to get rid of the F.B.I., get rid of the C.I.A., get rid of the Department of Justice,” Mr. Clendenen, the barber in rural California, who belongs to a local militia group, said. “When this is all said and done, I suspect this judge will be tried and found guilty of several crimes, including treason, no doubt.”

In Boynton Beach, Fla., Nick Laudano, 54, described Mr. Trump, not the courts, as the last stand between the deep state and the people. “I’d love to see some justice served the next four years when we get Trump back in power,” he said.

Others said they saw flaws in Mr. Trump but still believed he was the solution to preserving democracy.

Richard Steele, 82, a pastor and retired building contractor in Dalton, Ga., which is in the district of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right House member and Trump loyalist, praised the former president as a “gentleman” who does not flaunt his wealth, and an “honest man” — despite the thousands of documented lies or misleading claims he has made over the years. Mr. Trump, he said, was cloaked in “Godly armor.”

“I figured they’d get him for something,” Mr. Steele said, referring to the Democrats. “He’ll come out on top. He’s smarter than they are. Seriously.”

Wayne Wolf, 67, a retired stockbroker who was having breakfast in Dalton, said that the verdict made a mockery of democracy. Part of his suspicion stemmed from the fact that the charges seemed so difficult to explain in plain language.

“Can you actually tell me what he got convicted of?” he said. “Can anybody tell me that?”

Debbie Puryear, 63, a colon hydrotherapist at a business in Dalton that also offers massage therapy, vitamins and CBD products, said that she had given $30 to Mr. Trump’s campaign on Thursday night, soon after the verdicts were announced.

But the only real redress for people like her, she said, was to go to the polls in November. “Well, we’re definitely going to have to vote, and quit being scared that it’s going to be rigged,” she said, referencing Mr. Trump’s baseless claims that Democrats manipulated the voting system to keep him from winning in 2020 and will try to do so again.

She added: “I don’t think they’re going to succeed this time. Too many people woke up to what’s going on.”
