Submissions

We are committed to finding and developing new talent, whether you are a writer or an illustrator.

What sort of books are we looking for?

At Wacky Bee we’re concentrating on books for 3–12 year olds with our list falling into three sections – picture books for 3–6 year olds, early readers for 4–7 year olds and middle grade fiction for 8–12 year olds.

We will look at all types of subject matter but we’re particularly keen to bridge the gap between picture books and longer general fiction. We also want to make our readers laugh so we are looking for a strong element of humour, even if the story has sad bits as well.

What don’t we publish?

We are not looking for young adult fiction, poetry or non-fiction.

We prefer picture books to be fully illustrated and sent as low res pdfs.

And no rhyming texts please.

How to submit

Because Wacky Bee is the publishing arm of The Writers’ Advice Centre our submissions process is slightly different from that of other publishers.

We are a small, fledgling company and, as such, can only publish a limited number of titles every year. In order to be considered for Wacky Bee we prefer that authors first use one of The Writers’ Advice Centre’s manuscript appraisal services . That way, we have the time and resources to steer potential authors in the right direction, increasing their chances of acceptance on submission.

We are looking for authors who are serious enough about their writing that they would probably want to use The Writers’ Advice Centre’s services anyway, regardless of the Centre’s connection with Wacky Bee. However, if you feel that The Writers’ Advice Centre isn’t for you, then Wacky Bee is also open to unsolicited submissions.

Please submit your manuscript – as a Word attachment – to [email protected]

Note that we cannot respond to postal submissions.

The best children's books of 2023, chosen by top authors and illustrators

Published on: 21 December 2023

We asked authors and illustrators including BookTrust President Michael Morpurgo , BookTrust's Writer in Residence Michelle Robinson, Dapo Adeola, Candy Gourlay, Jasbinder Bilan, SF Said, Nadia Shireen and Frank Cottrell-Boyce among others the impossible question: can you pick just one favourite children's book published in 2023?

A collage of front covers of authors and illustrators' favourite children's books of 2023

Wolves in Helicopters by Sarah Tagholm and Paddy Donnelly

Chosen by Michelle Robinson "A cute and imaginative take on overcoming fears and coping with bad dreams."

Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell

Chosen by Sir Michael Morpurgo "It's the most extraordinary fantasy book I've ever read. She's my writer of the year and that's my book of the year."

Also chosen by Lucy Farfort "I loved this immersive, fantasy adventure. The nimble prose combined with a pacy plot and vivid characters made the book completely engrossing. The only downside was that I got through it so quickly!"

Bumble and Snug and the Shy Ghost by Mark Bradley

Chosen by Lucy Farfort's 8-year-old son "He thought it was funny and cute and another brilliant edition to the series!"

Wally the World's Greatest Piano-Playing Wombat  by Ratha Tep, illustrated by Camilla Pintonato

An illustration of a wombat in tails standing in front of a piano as musical notes play, from the front cover of Wally The World's Greatest Piano-Playing Wombat

Chosen by Máire Zepf "It is one of those special picture books that speaks as much to the grown-up as to the child. Dealing with those comparative, competitive inner voices we all know, it is funny, warm and wise all at once."

Drawn to Change the World by Emma Reynolds and 16 international artists

Chosen by Rashmi Sirdeshpande "This is an eye-opening, uplifting and beautifully illustrated graphic novel collection. Covering the stories of 16 youth climate activists, it centres indigenous and intersectional voices and solutions to the climate crisis and leaves readers with a much-needed feeling of hope."

A Bird Day by Eva Lindström

Chosen by Axel Scheffler "Everything you ever wanted to know about the everyday life of a bird family – heartwarming, with lovely artwork by one of my favourite illustrators."

The Artist by Ed Vere

An illustration of a dinosaur sticking out its tongue in concentration as it uses a big paintbrush to paint a building, from the front cover of The Artist

Chosen by Dapo Adeola "Not only is it a beautifully illustrated book, but the story itself unfolds at a wonderful pace, and the message it delivers is a timeless one about trusting the process. A message that works for all ages, even adults. It's a modern classic for me."

Also chosen by Matt Carr "Annoyingly brilliant. The last thing you want to see when you are an author-illustrator! Almost made me want to give up. It's an instant classic!"

Also chosen by SF Said "It's a glorious, joyful, multi-coloured celebration of creativity – both its power to help us see the world and its beauty anew, and the courage that's needed to bring something new and beautiful into the world. Fired by the belief that this is a power we all have, filled with dazzling colour and energy, The Artist is an enormously inspiring and empowering book for children and adults alike!"

An American Story by Kwame Alexander, with heartstopping art by Dare Coulter

Chosen by Candy Gourlay "At first, I hesitated to suggest this title because this is a UK audience and this book is American, with 'American' in the title, and is about a very specific American festering wound. But it asks the questions so many of us struggle with when it comes to children reading. Is the truth too painful for children to know?

"When researching my last two novels, Wild Song and Bone Talk , I was shocked by how much painful history had been misrepresented or concealed from me when I was a child. I felt like I'd been lied to. An American Story says, yes, there are ways to tell the truth. It's only by knowing the past that we can build a better future."

Luna Loves Christmas by Joseph Coelho and Fiona Lumbers

An illustration from the front cover of Luna Loves Christmas - a child in a red dress and Santa hat holding paperchains, surrounded by presents, with a Christmas tree on one side and holly on the other

Chosen by Jasbinder Bilan "This is the latest picture book in the Luna Loves... series. And what is so great about this one is its upbeat twist on Christmas that includes so much love and so many different people. Refreshingly, it's not all about what's going to be under the tree but rather, how to celebrate in an inclusive, fun way that has sharing at its heart.

"This also has bonus content in the shape of a story within a story which young readers will adore! Touching illustrations by Fiona Lumbers and the usual magic of Joseph Coelho's words will make this a book to read over and over."

The Skull by Jon Klassen

Chosen by Frank Cottrell Boyce " The Skull gave me one of the greatest reading experiences of my life. I help out in a community special school where the kids can be 'bouncy'. I forgot to prepare one day and just grabbed the book because of its cover (it was Halloween). Read it and they were utterly rapt. They even noticed and discussed the power of the book's single adverb ('finally').

"We ended up reading the whole book right through three times. I've been trying to unpick the reasons it has such a power to enchant ever since and have finally come to the conclusion that the only explanation is that Jon Klassen is a powerful enchanter."

Also chosen by Nadia Shireen "It is as beautifully illustrated as you would expect. But every word is so carefully chosen, every page turn so well considered. He's a master of economy. It's moody, evocative and quietly creepy and funny at the same time. Genius!"

Peace on Earth  by Smriti Halls and David Litchfield

An illustration from the front cover of Peace on Earth - a child sitting on the edge of a lake, dangling their feet into the water and stroking a big white fox sitting next to them; another white fox sleeps nearby, and stars twinkle in the sky with a big moon behind them

Chosen by Gill Lewis "A deep message, simply and beautifully told – powerful text and sublime illustrations about the power of love, friendship and peace on earth."

The Star Whale by Nicola Davies and Petr Horáček

Chosen by Anne Fine " The Star Whale is a lyrical and thought-provoking collection of poetry which celebrates the wonder and majesty of the natural world. Nicola Davies is herself a zoologist, and Petr Horáček has illustrated her work with extraordinary luminosity. So much of the current poetry for children is pedestrian, so a collection that fuels the imagination as this one does is very welcome."

In the Shadow of the Wolf Queen by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

Chosen by Piers Torday "This year Kiran Millwood Hargrave's majestic, sweeping fantasy for older readers, In the Shadow of The Wolf Queen , shook me like a storm wind that wouldn't let go. I also loved Lauren St. John's racehorse thriller Finding Wonder , illustrated by Levi Pinfold - it saw her at the top of her game with the most ingeniously plotted book of the year."

Gina Kaminski Saves the Wolf by Craig Barr Green and Frances Martin

An illustration from the front cover of Gina Kaminski Saves the World - a child wearing a backpack and holding a copy of Little Red Riding Hood, standing next to an arrow pointing to 'Granny's House'

Chosen by Piers Torday "My choice for younger readers, Craig Barr Green's debut picture book, illustrated by Frances Martin, was a joyful and unexpected storytelling delight."

Bear and Bird: The Picnic and Other Stories by Jarvis

Chosen by Karl Newson "The stories in this collection are wonderfully told and beautifully illustrated. Jarvis has created a series that's full of heart and friendship, and that explores situations we all encounter at one time or another - these two characters are so relatable and adorable!"

The Quickest Bedtime Story Ever! by Louise Fitzgerald and Kate Hindley

Chosen by Charlotte Guillain "I wish my kids were still young enough for a bedtime story as I would have loved reading this to them so much - I can imagine the giggles! It's properly funny and I love the interactivity - and the illustrations are brilliant. Read it at bedtime while you can as your offspring will be adults before you know it!"

To The Other Side by Erika Meza and Someone Just Like You by Helen Docherty and David Roberts

An illustration from the front cover of To The Other Side - two children wearing animal masks, standing behind a fence next to some colourful flowers

Chosen by Smriti Halls " To The Other Side is a deeply moving portrayal of a journey full of jeopardy taken by two siblings trying to reach safety across the border, and Someone Just Like You encourages us to think about what life might be for them once they have reached that supposed safety.

"In a blaze of dazzling flouro oranges and pinks, both books demand us to imagine a world where children have challenging journeys to make and where, once arrived, they might not be welcomed with open arms – children, just like the ones we know and love; children just like the ones we once were. I can't think of anything more important to be thinking of and holding in our hearts at the end of 2023."

A Zoo In My Shoe  by Jason Korsner, illustrated by Max Low

Chosen by Thomas Docherty "Younger children will love this clever, funny and ultimately subversive juggling of the word order in sentences to create delightfully absurd mini-stories. Max Low's bold, colourful illustrations are full of warmth and understated humour that perfectly matches the text. A brilliant book to encourage children to turn the world on its head and maybe start to create their own hilarious stories."

City of Stolen Magic by Nazneen Ahmed Pathak

Chosen by Patrice Lawrence " City of Stolen Magic is everything that makes me excited about books - magical alternative London, steampunk Victoriana, fabulous friendships and a heroine who finds her courage. It also harnesses the power of fiction to question colonial histories - something I am SO here for!"

The Swifts by Beth Lincoln and Claire Powell

Chosen by Harry Woodgate "It's a brilliantly plotted mystery inspired by nominative determinism, with a wonderful mix of humour, crafty clues, LGBT representation, and of course Claire's sumptuous and characterful pen and ink illustrations, which help bring everything to life. It felt reminiscent of Knives Out , honouring the classic mysteries whilst bringing a fun modern twist."

We’re inviting YOU to join our mission of breaking down the barriers that often get in the way of reading and bringing great stories within the reach of all readers.

Sweet Cherry loves receiving exciting submissions to read through. In order to give your work the best chance, please read our guidelines before making your submission.

We aim to make reading accessible for all children and we want all children to see themselves in the books we publish. This means being represented by the authors and illustrators we work with as well as being represented on the page, so we greatly value your unique voices.

Submissions Guidelines

We are open to e-mail submissions for picture and board books, chapter books, middle-grade fiction, right up to young adult fiction. Please include the following items in your submission:

In the body of your e-mail:

  • write your cover letter
  • biographical information

In the attachments of your e-mail:

  • the first three chapters (or approximately 5,000 words) of your manuscript (or the full picture book manuscript)
  • a one-page synopsis

Upon submission you’ll receive an immediate email acknowledgment that your work has reached us. We know how important it is to receive a response and will do our best to be in touch. We are a dedicated but small team so it is not always possible to reply to each and every submission. Therefore, if you haven’t received a reply after 12 weeks, please assume that we will not be moving forward with your submission.

Helpful tips and advice

Cover letter A good cover letter should:

  • State the genre and target age range of your manuscript. Think about why your title is going to appeal to that demographic.
  • Give us a short elevator pitch for your story. This should ideally be accomplished in a couple of sentences and create some intrigue.
  • Tell us your motivation for writing your story and why you think it needs to be heard.
  • Tell us if this is a standalone story/idea or whether you think there is series potential.
  • Tell us why you think there’s room in the market for your book. What other similar titles are out there? Or is there a gap in the market you feel there’s a demand for?
  • Introduce yourself! Tell us a bit of biographical information, including any previous writing experience, publications or courses. Don’t worry too much about this. We just want to get a sense of why you love to write and where you’re currently at in your writing journey.
  • State whether your submission is for our Sweet Cherry or Clock Tower imprint.
  • Tell us why you would like to publish with us.

Sample Chapters

These must be the beginning of your story, even if you believe they aren’t the most captivating part. We act as readers do and need to understand how your story begins and see if we are excited about where it’s heading.

It’s our job to read through your manuscript and make a decision based on the key areas that need to be fulfilled. These include:

  • level of engagement
  • writing ability
  • character intrigue
  • marketability and suitability for proposed audience.

It is for this reason that we request a covering letter and synopsis along with your manuscript. Promising submissions will be discussed amongst the editorial team, who will request the full manuscript if they are interested.

  • A synopsis shouldn’t be longer than a page in length – approximately 400–500 words. The aim is to tell us your story’s arcs, main characters, themes, conflicts/stakes. Provide a short summary that will make us want to find out more, but avoid summarising the whole story chapter by chapter.
  • As general rule of thumb, if you’re struggling to break down your story synopsis in around 300-500 words that could be a sign that your manuscript needs tightening before submission. The story and its aims should be clear to you so that you can make it clear to us.
  • Your synopsis should be informative rather than written like a blurb. Tell us simply how it unfolds, how your characters develop and how the story reaches its resolution, as though you were talking to a friend. Please also include the ending/resolution and don’t worry about spoilers.

Margaret Kingsbury

Margaret Kingsbury grew up in a house so crammed with books she couldn’t open a closet door without a book stack tumbling, and she’s brought that same decorative energy to her adult life. Margaret has an MA in English with a concentration in writing and has worked as a bookseller and adjunct English professor. She’s currently a freelance writer and editor, and in addition to Book Riot, her pieces have appeared in School Library Journal, BuzzFeed News, The Lily, Parents, StarTrek.com, and more. She particularly loves children’s books, fantasy, science fiction, horror, graphic novels, and any books with disabled characters. May children’s book releases explore many diverse experiences. In May picture book releases, a Cherokee girl moves, a Moroccan library tells its story, an anxious child learns to love a pet, Muslim children become friends, and a young girl experiences persecution during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In May middle grade releases, a Chinese American girl discovers a magic paintbrush, a Pakistani American experiences harassment, a nonbinary kid has their first romance, a Hindu boy discovers what it means to be brave during the British Partition of India, and a girl learns to value beauty from within. All of May children’s book releases were fantastic, and I can’t wait for everyone to get a chance to read them, too.

To read reviews of even more of May children’s book releases, make sure to subscribe and follow my reviews on Book Riot’s kidlit newsletter .

May Children’s Book Releases: Picture Books

Cover of Being Home by Traci Sorell & Michaela Goade

Being Home by Traci Sorell & Michaela Goade (May 7; Kokila)

Most picture books about moving depict a child who doesn’t want to move or feels nervous about it. While those books are needed, Sorell instead shows a child who looks forward to moving. A young Cherokee girl and her family are leaving the city to move closer to family on a Cherokee Nation reservation. The picture book opens with the girl saying goodbye to her old home. Her mother tells her they’re on a new path, “One that leads us to / our ancestors’ land / and to our people.” The girl is ready and excited to follow the path. Once they arrive at their new home, relatives come to help and celebrate and explore with the girl. Goade’s illustrations are warm, joyous, and vibrant. It’s a beautiful celebration of Indigenous culture and what it means to be home.

Cover of Behind My Doors: The Story of the World's Oldest Library by Hena Khan & Nabila Adani

Behind My Doors: The Story of the World’s Oldest Library by Hena Khan & Nabila Adani (May 7; Lee & Low Books)

This wonderful nonfiction picture book is told from the unique perspective of the oldest library in the world—the Al-Qarawiyyin Library in Fez, Morocco. The library is born in 859 when Fatima al-Fihri uses her inheritance to build a mosque and school, with a library to serve both. For centuries, the library enjoys prestige and relishes in the scholars who visit. But slowly people stop visiting, and the library falls into disrepair. In 2012, the government hires the architect Aziza Chaouni from Fez to restore the library. This is a really magical and accessible glimpse into a library’s history with soft and warm illustrations.

Cover of Growing Up under a Red Flag by Ying Chang Compestine & Xinmei Liu

Growing Up under a Red Flag by Ying Chang Compestine & Xinmei Liu (May 7; Rocky Pond Books)

This is the first picture book memoir that I know of that takes place during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Compestine was three when Mao Zedong declared a Cultural Revolution and punished educated people like Compestine’s parents, who were doctors and taught Compestine English. When she turned five, they were no longer allowed to read or speak any foreign languages, and the leader of the Red Guard came to live with them to ensure compliance with all of Mao Zedong’s rules. Eventually, the Red Guard arrested Compestine’s father, and she doesn’t see him again until she’s a teenager. This is a compelling glimpse into an important historical moment accompanied by dramatic and moving illustrations. A short author’s note with photographs follows.

Cover of Sister Friend by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow & Shahrzad Maydani

Sister Friend by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow & Shahrzad Maydani (May 7; Abrams Books for Young Readers)

This heartwarming picture book grapples with the too-common struggle of finding friends when you look different and come from a different culture than everyone else. Ameena is the only brown girl and Muslim in her class. The other kids don’t really play with her. At recess, she plays an old game her Momma taught her alone. When a new student arrives, Sundus, who is brown like Ameena and wears a hijab, Ameena hopes they can be friends. But Ameena’s too-hasty words make Sundus believe she’s making fun of her. However, when the two attend the masjid together, Sundus realizes that Ameena can also be the friend she seeks. This special friendship book has gorgeous, soft illustrations that feel like a hug.

Cover of Neat Nick's Big Mess by Chad Otis

Neat Nick’s Big Mess by Chad Otis (May 7; Rocky Pond Books)

Nick loves everything to be just so—tidy, organized, planned. Nothing out of the ordinary, unexpected, or messy. But sometimes Nick’s concentration on everything being neat and tidy makes him feel lonely. So, his mom buys Nick a big, hairy, happy dog as a surprise. This doggo is not neat. He’s squishy and slobbery and messy and excitable. Can Nick learn to love this slobbery mess? Can the dog help Nick break out of his shell? This is such a sweet and funny book for anxious kids.

May Children’s Book Releases: Middle Grade

Cover of Plain Jane and the Mermaid by Vera Brosgol

Plain Jane and the Mermaid by Vera Brosgol (May 7; First Second)

This delightful Eastern European fairytale graphic novel set in a nebulous historical time explores the idea of beauty. Jane has always known she’s plain; her wealthy parents made sure of that, constantly critiquing her eating, face, and demeanor. When her parents die, Jane learns that girls can’t inherit property. Her horrible male cousin will receive everything and kick her out of the only home Jane’s ever known. Jane will receive an inheritance if she marries, so she finds the most handsome boy in the village—the fisherman’s youngest son—and asks if he’ll marry her. He hesitantly agrees, wanting to escape a life of catching fish, but then a beautiful mermaid lures him into the ocean. Jane isn’t about to let her handsome fiance go, so she goes on a quest into the ocean’s depths to save him. This is so very entertaining. Fairy tale readers of all ages will love it.

Cover of Lion of the Sky by Ritu Hemnani

Lion of the Sky by Ritu Hemnani (May 7; Balzer + Bray)

This moving middle grade verse novel occurs during the British Partition of India. Twelve-year-old Raj, who is Hindu, loves flying kites with his best friend, who is Muslim. Raj is the middle child and often feels like he isn’t good enough in his father’s eyes. Raj loves cooking, but his father sees that as women’s work. His father wants Raj to excel at math so he can work in the family’s tailor business, but numbers swim for Raj. He and his family are initially excited about India’s independence, but then they learn they will be forced to move into what is now considered ‘India.’ During the harrowing journey, Raj’s younger sister is lost. Once they arrive at their new home, more difficulties face the grieving family. Thankfully, everything begins to improve thanks to Raj’s bravery, which is something he struggles to understand from the beginning. This is a lovely novel that I flew through despite the length.

Cover of Any Way You Look by Maleeha Siddiqui

Any Way You Look by Maleeha Siddiqui (May 7; Scholastic Press)

This is a fantastic and relatable novel about consent and fashion. Sixth grader Ainy, who is Pakistani American, and her family are going through hard times financially. Her father has moved back to Pakistan to care for his mother with cancer. Their family has moved into a friend’s basement, unable to afford their apartment’s rent. Ainy really wants to work in her mother’s clothing store, and her mother finally agrees. Her older sister gets a job at a coffee shop to help the family. When boys harass Ainy, she feels like she needs to deal with it herself. Her family is so busy and worried; she doesn’t want to add to their burdens. Ainy begins wearing a hijab like her older sister, hoping the boys will leave her alone. She feels guilty about this, knowing wearing a hijab should be about faith rather than hiding. When the hijab fails to deter the boys, she finally tells her family. This also has friend drama and first crushes.

Cover of The Magic Paintbrush by Kat Zhang, Phoebe Zhong, & Eric Darnell

The Magic Paintbrush by Kat Zhang, Eric Darnell, & Phoebe Zhong (May 21; Crown Books for Young Readers)

This is such a fun first book in a new illustrated fantasy series full of Chinese folklore. Seventh grader Amy has always loved art but feels like her art has been stuck in a bit of a childish rut lately. When she visits her Lao Lao in Flushing, the two bond over art. One day, while Amy is using Lao Lao’s jade paintbrushes, the bird-headed tiger she creates comes alive! She realizes Lao Lao’s jade paintbrushes are magic. Meanwhile, a university student in China has been hunting for the magic paintbrushes. This is a fast-paced, exciting fantasy read.

Cover of Upstaged by Robin Easter

Upstaged by Robin Easter (May 28; Little, Brown Ink)

I smiled so much while reading this sweet, queer middle grade graphic novel romance. Ash (they/them) and Ivy (she/her) always share a cabin at a musical theater summer camp. This is the last year they can attend the camp, and Ash wants it to be the best year yet. But Ivy and Ash are put in different cabins, and Ash, who has a crush on Ivy, worries that Ivy is falling for her fellow costar in the musical they’re performing—”Ella,” a retelling of Cinderella. Ash doesn’t know how to tell Ivy they have a crush on her, and their worries are ostracizing them from other caring campers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Inspired by her beloved dog, Jennifer Aniston will soon become a children’s author.

The “Friends” star has a four-book deal with HarperCollins Publishers and animation studio Invisible Studio for a series of works featuring the animated dog Clydeo, based on the actor’s own rescue pet, Clyde. The first book, “Clydeo Takes a Bite Out of Life,” with illustrations by Bruno Jacob, is scheduled for release on Oct. 1.

Clydeo is already a favorite on social media, with more than 100 million views across platforms since Aniston first posted about him on Instagram in 2021. “Clydeo Takes a Bite Out of Life,” billed as a “deliciously fun-filled journey of self-discovery and self-confidence,” will tell of Clydeo’s discovery that he’s a gifted cook.

“I could not be more thrilled to be taking Clydeo and his stories to publishing, where he will hopefully inspire children and dog lovers alike with his adorable journey to find his true passion,” Aniston said in a statement.
