How to Make the World’s Best Paper Airplanes
There are many skills fathers should pass on to their children: how to ride a bike, how to skip a stone , and of course, how to make a paper airplane. When it’s time to show your kids how to fold a humble piece of paper into a soaring jet, don’t stumble around and hastily construct one from the poor memory of your youth — one that takes a disappointing nosedive as soon as it leaves your fingertips. Instead, teach them the art of making a plane that can truly go the distance.
The three designs below are tried and true (you wouldn’t believe some of the science behind paper airplanes) and are perfect beginner, moderate, and expert level models to play with. They go in order from easiest to hardest, so there’s something for every age level — including adult; don’t act like you’re not going to try these out in the break room.
Beginner Level: The Bulldog Dart
This paper airplane is a warm-up of sorts. It’s simple, requires few folds, and flies well. It’s just not going to win you any contests or style points. If it’s your kid’s first time making a real paper airplane, this is a good place to start.
1. First you fold the paper in half lengthwise, and then unfold. This initial crease is simply a guideline for the next folds.
2. Fold the top two corners down so they meet the center crease. This is the classic way to start a paper airplane, and probably what you first learned as a kid.
3. Flip the plane over, and fold the corners in again to the center crease. You want the diagonal line coming off the top of the plane (on the left side) to be lined up with the middle (like on the right side).
After both folds are completed.
4. Fold the top point down so that the tip meets the bottom of where the previous folds come together.
5. Fold the entire plane in half, in on itself. This creates the snub nose, which gives the Bulldog Dart its name.
6. Fold the wings down so that you’re making a straight line across from the top of the snub nose. Repeat on the other side.
The finished Bulldog Dart. This flies better when thrown at lower speeds. Your tendency is to launch it, but the heavy nose will just fly it into the ground. Give it a softer throw and you’ll have better luck.
Intermediate Level: The Harrier
This is a slightly more advanced paper airplane. There are a few more folds, and it flies a bit better than the above Bulldog Dart. This is the perfect middle ground between simple and complex recreational paper aircraft.
1. Fold in half lengthwise and then unfold. As with the Bulldog above, this center crease is just a guide for future folds.
2. Fold the top corners in so they meet at the center crease.
3. Fold the entire top down so that it resembles an envelope. Make sure you leave a half inch or so at the bottom — you don’t want the top point to evenly meet the bottom edge.
4. Fold the top corners in so they meet at the middle. There should be a small triangle tail hanging out beneath these folds.
5. Fold that small triangle up to hold those previous folds in place.
6. Fold in half, but make you sure you fold it outwards on itself, not inwards. You want the previous triangular fold to be visible on the bottom edge.
7. Fold the wing down so its edge meets the bottom edge of the airplane. Repeat on the other side.
The finished Harrier shown below. It has cool pointed wings and has great stability because of the triangle on the bottom.
Expert Level: The Hammer
While there are far more advanced paper airplanes, this one, in my opinion, is the perfect balance of complexity and accessibility for the Average Paper Airplane Joe. It has far more folds than the previous two models, and also flies the best and farthest. Pay attention with this one, folks, and the payoff is well worth it.
1. First, fold the top left corner all the way down so it meets the right edge of the paper. You’ll then unfold, as this will be a guiding crease.
2. Repeat the same thing with the top right corner and unfold.
You should end up with an unfolded sheet of paper with two creases forming an X.
3. Fold the top right corner down so that its edge meets the crease that goes from top left to bottom right.
4. Do the same with the left corner. The top left point should exactly meet the diagonal right edge of the airplane.
5. Fold the plane in half in on itself, then unfold. You’ll use that middle crease as a guide.
6. After you’ve unfolded the previous step, fold the top down so that its edge meets the bottom edge.
7. Fold the top corners down so that their points meet at the middle crease.
8. Unfold — as with many steps in making this airplane, these creases are a guide.
9. Now take what was the top edge that you previously folded down (Step 6) and fold it back up at the point where its edge meets the creases from the previous step.
10. Fold the corners in yet again so that their edge meets both the edge of the top flap and the crease from Step 7.
Both corners folded in, meeting both the top flap and the previously-made creases. These are ultimately the wings.
11. Fold the wings in once more, this time simply folding along the crease that you already made. After this step your plane should have straight lines down from the top to the bottom.
Both wings folded in again; straight edges from top to bottom.
12. Fold the top down from where it meets the top of the wing flaps you created in the previous step.
13. Fold the whole thing in half outward. You want all the paper flaps on the outside of the craft. At this point, folding can become a little tricky because of the thickness of the paper, so take extra care in making good, clean folds.
14. Fold the wings down so that their edge meets the bottom edge of the plane. This creates a small snub nose. Again, this can be a tough fold, so be precise and take your time if you have to.
The finished Hammer. This bad boy flies like a dream.

How To Make the Perfect Paper Airplane
And a DIY plane launcher to go with it.
Ah, the paper airplane. A project that appears simple at first glance but is devilishly complex when you actually want your stationery aviation creation to fly a bit further than a few feet. So what are the right folds, cuts, and edges needed to created the perfect paper plane?
We spoke with Barnaby Wainfan, a technical fellow and aerodynamicist at Northrop Grumman, who gave us a few pointers. On April 22, 1993, the FMX-Facetmobile , a homebuilt plane of Wainfan's creation, flew for the first time, sporting a design that's a mix between an F-117 Nighthawk and, well, a paper airplane.
Here's how to make a paper plane that's guaranteed to dominate your living room skies.
Start by folding the paper in half down the center of the plane. Cut along the perimeter to get a perfectly symmetrical aircraft.
Now fold: First, the wings, down along line No. 1. Then grab the tail in the center and fold it in the opposite direction along the same line, so it extends above the wings. Next fold down along line No. 2. At the seam where the wings meet use a piece of Scotch tape to hold them together. Add a standard paper clip beside the nose to balance the weight of the thinner nose with the plane's wide wings. Last, fold the flaps up along line No. 3.
After a test flight, troubleshoot by adjusting those folds. If the plane nosedives, bend the rear flaps to make them more vertical. If it swoops up and then dives straight down, flatten them.
The Launcher
Sure, you could fling your perfectly created paper airplane with your own human muscles, but it's much cooler to build a machine to do it for you. This design uses a few robotics parts, a little bit of soldering, a few chops with the miter saw. But in about an hour, you'll have a machine purpose built for some airplane flinging.

Paper airplanes have captivated the hearts and minds of both young and old, offering a simple yet delightful way to explore the fascinating world of flight. In this article, we’ll take you on a journey through the basics of crafting paper airplanes and introduce you to 29 distinctive designs to spark your creativity.
In this article, we will show exactly how to fold 29 of the best paper airplane designs out there.
What Makes a Paper Airplane Fly?
Understanding the Principles Behind Paper Aircraft Flight
Delving into the science that underpins the flight of paper airplanes can elevate your enjoyment of crafting and piloting these paper marvels. Numerous factors contribute to the performance of a paper airplane:
Aerodynamics: The shape and dimensions of the wings, alongside the overall design, wield substantial influence. This interplay dictates the lift generated by the wings, as well as the combined effects of drag and gravity, ultimately dictating the flight trajectory.
Balance: Attaining an equilibrium in the center of gravity is pivotal for flight stability. Any deviation, be it a nose-heavy or tail-heavy configuration, can hinder a straight and steady flight path.
Airflow Dynamics: The manner in which air flows both over and beneath the wings exerts a profound impact on lift generation. Wings with smoother, streamlined profiles typically yield superior flight performance.
Launch Technique: The force applied and the angle at which you release the paper airplane into the air significantly shape its flight trajectory. Experimenting with various launch techniques can refine and optimize flight performance.
The 2023 Record for Paper Airplane Flight
Turning to the present year of 2023, the distinction for the greatest distance traveled by a paper airplane rests in the capable hands of John Collins, a distinguished aerospace engineer. This extraordinary feat was accomplished back in February 2012 when Collins’s paper creation, affectionately named “Suzanne,” embarked on an astonishing journey, covering an impressive distance of 69.14 meters (equivalent to 226 feet and 10 inches). Collins’s remarkable achievement not only epitomizes the sheer delight found in crafting and guiding paper airplanes through the air but also underscores the immense distances these meticulously designed marvels can traverse when launched with precision.
In Conclusion
Crafting a paper airplane is a straightforward and enjoyable undertaking, devoid of the necessity for video tutorials. Armed with the requisite folding techniques and meticulous attention to detail, you can give life to your aerial masterpiece. An appreciation for the underlying science of paper airplane flight will undoubtedly deepen your enjoyment of this enduring pastime. So, seize a sheet of paper, initiate the art of folding, and release your imagination as your paper creation embarks on its airborne journey. Who knows? The image most people have of paper airplanes involves a badly folded sheet of notebook paper floating lazily around a school classroom. The basic design has come a long way over the years, however, and it’s now a breeze to make a paper airplane that can zip along at high speed and cover about the same distance as a good frisbee toss. All it takes is a couple of minutes and a steady hand. Find yourself a piece of sturdy paper, make tight, precise folds and watch your creation sail.
Folding the Paper Airplane
- It’s easiest to make the folds of your airplane from the top of the paper down.
- For the purpose of following these instructions, a basic sheet of 8.5”x11” (most comparable to A4 paper outside the US) letter paper will work best.
- You can use shipping paper.
- Or reuse old paper boxes for this purpose.
- The center crease is made to serve as a reference point for later folds.
- You can also fold the paper in half width-wise, if you choose. This will help guide the first couple of vertical folds you make.
- Leave 2-3 inches (5-7.5cm) of space between the point of the triangle and bottom of the paper.
- Folding the paper over on itself adds weight to the plane as it reduces its size, giving it the heft to allow it to fly farther.
- This last folded point at the top of the paper will serve as the nose of the plane.
- The technique of using a triangular flap to secure a fold is known as the "Nakamura lock," named after the origami practitioner who invented it.
- Folding the paper back on itself wraps the lower triangular piece around the outside of the bottom of the plane, holding it in place and making it easier to grip and throw.
- Be careful not to bend the wings while folding them.
- Go somewhere with plenty of space and give your new airplane a toss. Airplanes made with this design fly far and straight and can reach some pretty impressive speeds. [10] X Research source
Making Adjustments
- Blunt-nosed planes give up a little speed but fly much further due to their streamlined construction. [11] X Research source
- It’s normal for the plane to curve a little, so only adjust the wing height if the plane is spiraling out of control when thrown.
- Paper airplanes operate on the same physical principles that allow real planes to fly. A slight curve of the wings is necessary to turn air resistance into lift. [13] X Research source
- Try a blunt-nosed design if your plane has a problem with taking a nosedive. Pointed noses can easily become damaged when they hit the ground.
- Attempting to throw too hard can also cause the nose to rise, stalling the plane. Launch the plane with a smooth, straight motion of the arm and wrist to send it on its way steadily.
Choosing the Right Paper
- The types of paper commonly used in offices—crisp, smooth and perfectly weighted—often make for excellent paper planes.
- It’s okay to use thinner paper for smaller planes, since the compact size will compensate for the weight difference. Likewise, heavier paper can be used to make oversized planes.
- If you’re working with scrap paper, cut or tear it until it’s roughly the proportions of letter paper, then reproduce the folds on a slightly larger or smaller scale.
- Raw, foil, laminate and glossy papers do not take a fold well.
- Apply pressure to each crease you make and go over it a couple of times. The neater the fold, the better it will maintain its shape.

How to Make a Perfect Paper Airplane: A Step-by-Step Guide
Table of Contents
Are you looking to make the perfect paper airplane? Look no further! Paper airplanes are easy to make and a great way to entertain both kids and adults alike. Whether you’re an expert folder or just getting started, these step-by-step instructions will help you make the perfect paper airplane every time.
Materials Needed
Before we get started on making the perfect paper airplane, let’s talk about the materials you’ll need. First and foremost, you’ll need paper. The type of paper you use will affect the weight and durability of your airplane. We recommend using standard printer paper or origami paper, as they are lightweight and easy to fold.
In addition to paper, you may want to have a ruler, scissors, and tape on hand. The ruler will help you make precise folds, and the scissors and tape will come in handy if you need to make adjustments to your airplane.
Now that you have your materials ready, it’s time to start folding! The basic fold is the foundation for all paper airplane designs. Here’s how to do it:
- Take a piece of paper and fold it in half vertically. Crease the fold with your fingers or a ruler to make it sharp.
- Unfold the paper and fold the top corners down toward the center crease. The top of the paper should form a point.
- Fold the top point down to meet the center crease.
- Fold the paper in half along the center crease.
- Fold the wings down so that the tips meet the bottom edge of the paper.
Congratulations! You’ve just made a basic paper airplane. This design is perfect for beginners and can be customized with different folding techniques for added flair.
Advanced Folding Techniques
If you’re looking to take your paper airplane game to the next level, try experimenting with different folding techniques. Here are a few examples:
The Dart is a popular paper airplane design known for its speed and distance. To make the Dart, follow these steps:
- Start with a piece of paper and fold it in half vertically.
- Fold the top corners down to the center crease, just like in the basic fold.
- Fold the wings down again, this time at a 45-degree angle.
- Fold the wingtips up to create a vertical stabilizer.
The Dart is great for racing and can travel long distances with the right launch technique.
The Glider is a paper airplane design that is all about aerodynamics. To make the Glider, follow these steps:
- Start with a piece of paper and fold it in half horizontally.
- Fold the top corners down to the center crease.
- Fold the wings up at a 45-degree angle.
- Fold the wingtips down to create winglets.
The Glider is great for smooth, controlled flights and can stay in the air for a long time with the right launch technique.
Testing and Adjusting
Once you’ve made your paper airplane, it’s time to test it out! The best way to test your airplane is by launching it from a high point, like a balcony or a staircase. Here are a few tips for testing and adjusting your paper airplane:
- Launch your airplane at a slight upward angle. This will help it gain altitude and stay in the air longer.
- Launch your airplane with a flick of the wrist. A gentle toss will not provide enough force to keep it in the air.
- Pay attention to the flight pattern of your airplane. Does it veer to the left or right? Does it nose-dive or stall out? These are all signs that your airplane needs some adjustments.
- If your airplane isn’t flying the way you want it to, try adjusting the wings by folding them up or down slightly. You can also adjust the tail by folding it up or down.
Remember, practice makes perfect! Don’t be discouraged if your first few flights aren’t successful. Keep experimenting with different designs and techniques until you find the perfect paper airplane for you.
In conclusion, making the perfect paper airplane is all about trial and error. Start with the basic fold and experiment with different designs and techniques until you find the one that works best for you. Don’t be afraid to adjust your airplane as needed, and don’t forget to have fun! Making paper airplanes is a great way to exercise your creativity and pass the time. So grab some paper and get folding!
Once you’ve made your paper airplane, it’s time to test it out and make any necessary adjustments. Here are some tips on how to test your paper airplane’s flight and make adjustments for better flight:
Flight Test
To test your paper airplane’s flight, find an open space with no obstacles, such as a park or gymnasium. Hold the airplane by the bottom and give it a gentle toss. Observe how the airplane flies and make note of any issues, such as poor stability or a short flight time.
Adjustments
If you find that your airplane is not flying as well as you’d like, there are several adjustments you can make to improve its flight. Here are a few tips:
- Adjust the wings: If your airplane is flying to one side or the other, adjust the wings by bending them slightly up or down.
- Adjust the tail: If your airplane is flying up or down, adjust the tail by bending it up or down slightly.
- Add weight: If your airplane is too light, add a paperclip or two to the nose to give it more weight and stability.
Remember, practice makes perfect. Keep experimenting with your paper airplane designs and adjusting them until you achieve the perfect flight.
Congratulations, you now know how to make the perfect paper airplane! By following these step-by-step instructions and experimenting with different folding techniques, you can create paper airplanes that fly higher, faster, and farther than ever before.
Remember, the key to making the perfect paper airplane is practice and experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try new things and make adjustments to your designs until you achieve the perfect flight.
So next time you’re looking for a fun and easy activity, grab some paper and start folding. Who knows, you may just discover your new favorite hobby!
The Best Paper Airplane
Introduction: The Best Paper Airplane
Playing with paper airplanes has always been an enjoyable activity for young and old. The paper airplane is said to have been invented by the Chinese in about 400 BC. It's been a great educational toy ever since then! Even the Wright Brothers used paper airplanes to build models of their first actual airplanes.
This paper airplane (pictured above) is simple to make and it performs better than any other paper plane I've made. No previous paper airplane experience is needed. This instructable will guide you through the steps of how to fold it, and then modify it so you can make your own great design!
Step 1: Materials Needed
What you will need to make this airplane:
-A 8.5 x 11 piece of paper (any paper will do, but I prefer to use printer paper, which hasn't been three-hole punched)
-Scotch Tape (optional)
-A willingness to keep trying if you don't succeed the first time.
Step 2: Fold in Half
Fold the paper in half lengthwise (some call this "hot dog style") and open it back up again. Ensure that the crease made by the fold is visible.
Step 3: Fold in Top Corners
Fold the top corners in to the middle crease you made during the previous step. Try to keep these two folds as even and symmetrical as possible. The edges that you folded in should be touching each other, which will make a triangle at the top of your paper.
Step 4: Fold the Top Point Down
Fold the point of the triangle down. I've found that the plane performs best if the shape made by this downward fold is another perfect triangle. Don't worry if your fold isn't perfect--it should still work just fine as long as the shape you made closely resembles a triangle.
Step 5: Fold in Top Corners So the Points Touch
This is similar to Step 3. However, instead of having the the edges completely touch in the middle, fold the top corners in such that only the corners meet at the middle crease. Your paper should look like the picture above, with a little triangle shape showing underneath the touching corners. Once your paper looks similar to the picture, tightly crease these two folds.
Step 6: Fold Up Little Triangle
Remember the little triangle shape mentioned in the previous step? Fold it up and tightly crease so it holds the corners down. You can also use a small piece of scotch tape to hold these folds down.
Step 7: Turn Over and Fold in Half
Turn your airplane over (first picture) and fold it in half along the middle line (second picture). You should be folding it up towards yourself so you end up with something that looks like the picture. During this process, make sure the two corners don't slip out of the little triangle fold that's holding them down.
Step 8: Check Your Work
At this point, your plane should appear similar to the pictures. Obviously, your plane will look slightly different, but the general shape should be the same. If yours looks significantly different, it may be best to start over with a new piece of paper. If you're happy with how it looks, great! Go to the next step.
Step 9: Fold Down the First Wing
Let's make the wings! Place your plane so the nose is facing left and fold most, grab one half, and fold it down straight across, as the picture indicates. This will make the first wing. You can make your wing as big as you choose. I've found that my plane performs best if I crease the wing 0.5-1 inch above the bottom of the plane.
Step 10: Fold Down the Second Wing
Turn your plane over and place it so the nose is facing to the right. Fold down the other wing so it exactly matches your first wing. It is important that these folds are as equal as possible; otherwise, your plane will not be balanced correctly.
Step 11: Unfold Wings and Check Your Work
Unfold the wings so they are perpendicular with the body of the plane. Again, make sure your plane looks somewhat like the pictures. At this point, you have a fully functional paper airplane! Nice work! You could end here if you wanted. If you find your plane spinning out of control, and would like to give it some more stability, go to the next step.
Step 12: Fold Up Wing Tips
I've found that my paper airplanes are much more stable if I complete this step. Fold the wings down again and place your plane with the nose facing right. Fold up the very tip of the wing about a half-inch. Turn the plane over and do the same thing to the other wing. Again, it is crucial to make sure these folds are equal to each other so your plane is balanced correctly.
Step 13: Finished!
Unfold the wings again to reveal your finished product. You did it! Now you know how to make the best paper airplane known to man!
If your plane loses balance while flying, try re-folding the wings and wing tips so they are exactly even with each other.
If you'd like to modify the design, try making the plane with different sized wings, or with bigger folded-up wing tips. Bigger wings are better for gliding, while smaller wings are good for accuracy. You can also put a paper clip on the nose for better accuracy. Make the design yours, have have fun!

The BEST Playdough Recipe
This easy playdough recipe takes 5 minutes to prep and 5 minutes to make. And the playdough will last for months! It’s super soft, stretchy and non-toxic for kids.
RELATED: Kool-Aid Playdough
We have tried a few recipes before that require you to mix the coloring in after the playdough is made. This was SO messy! We got food coloring all over our hands and surfaces doing it this way. You’ll love this method because there’s no need for bags to mix the coloring with and no mess too!
How to Make Playdough
There are many ways to make playdough – using a stove-top or using a kettle with boiling water. Personally, we prefer the stove-top method. We find it’s easier to mix the ingredients in the pot. There are also no-cook playdough options but we also prefer this cooked playdough recipe. We find this recipe to last the longest and be the softest. This recipe only takes a few minutes to make and it will last for months!
Here are the ingredients you’ll need:
- 1 cup flour
- 2 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil (do not use olive oil)
- 1 cup water
- food coloring
Note on Food Coloring
We like to use this liquid food coloring . It makes the playdough much more vibrant than regular food coloring. If you’re using regular food coloring, you’ll need to add in a lot of drops.

How to Keep Playdough Soft
First wrap your playdough in saran wrap then store in an air-tight container. You’ll notice that playdough will go hard if left out – so the less air that can get to the playdough when storing, the longer it will last!
How Do I Make Playdough Soft Again?
If your playdough dries out and turns out to be a little dry after making it, try adding in a little more oil first. You can knead the oil in with your hands. You can also knead in a little bit of water.
When you’re done making your playdough, get out some cookie cutters and have fun making shapes! We also like using rolling pins and stamps to play with our playdough.
Do You Need Cream of Tartar?
Yes, if you want a soft playdough and want it to last longer, you need to add a little bit of cream of tartar. We tested different amounts and found 2 teaspoons to be the perfect amount to make the playdough super soft. If you skip the cream of tartar your dough may turn out a bit more dry and crumbly. It also helps your playdough last longer. If you want a dough recipe without cream of tartar, see our cloud dough recipe.
How to Get Vibrant Playdough Colors
We like to use this liquid food coloring . It makes the playdough much more vibrant than regular food coloring. If you’re using regular food coloring, you’ll need to add in a lot of drops. And don’t mix after you make the playdough – add it into the water instead which is so much easier and less messy!

You should end up with an unfolded sheet of paper with two creases forming an X. 3. Fold the top right corner down so that its edge meets the crease that goes from top left to bottom right. 4. Do the same with the left corner. The top left point should exactly meet the diagonal right edge of the airplane. 5.
2. Bring the top corners toward the crease in the middle. Grab one of the top corners and fold it into a triangle so the edge lines up with the crease. Flatten the fold using your knuckle or fingernail so it holds in place. Repeat your fold on the other top corner so there's a point at the top of your paper. [7]
