The University of East Anglia (or UEA) was the first university in the UK to offer degree-level courses in creative writing, introducing an MA in creative writing in 1970, then following suit with the first creative writing PhD in 1987.

UEA’s courses combine creative writing with the study of literature or drama at an undergraduate level. Each of the university’s postgraduate courses focuses on a particular form of writing, such as fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction.

Based in Norwich, a UNESCO City of Literature , UEA is able to provide a variety of resources and opportunities for creative writing students, including:

Leeds offers an interdisciplinary BA in English Literature with Creative Writing , an MA in Creative Writing or Writing for Performance and Digital Media , and research degrees within the School of English or the School of Performance and Cultural Industries.

At the undergraduate level, Leeds offers a diverse range of creative writing modules (including science fiction, crime fiction, nature writing, and travel writing). Published writers and expert researchers teach all these modules.

3. University of Birmingham

Established in the West Midlands in 1900, the University of Birmingham is another campus-based Russell Group university.

Birmingham ranked first for creative writing in the Guardian University Guide 2023 . The university offers a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing or in Film and Creative Writing and an MA in Creative Writing.

The university’s creative writing modules and courses focus on exposing students to a broad range of writing styles and genres while offering workshops and professional skills training aimed at preparing students for the publishing industry.

The university also works closely with the local creative community to provide students with a range of opportunities, including:

The Warwick Writing Program provides the creative writing courses at Warwick. Established in 1996, the project aims to inspire and develop writers internationally. Published authors, poets, and literary translators make up the staff.

Within the program, students can pursue a BA in English and Creative Writing or an MA in Writing . Students can pursue the MA as either a taught degree or a long project, with the aim of producing a long-form piece of writing.

The University of Warwick provides opportunities for students and graduates, such as:

Strathclyde also offers postgraduate courses. As the university is Scottish, it offers a Master of Letters ( MLitt ) and a Master of Research ( M. Res .) in place of the more common MA in creative writing. MLitt creative writing students can choose to specialize in a research area and placement of their choice or take a module from other subjects within the School of Humanities.

The University of Strathclyde offers students numerous resources, opportunities, and connections across Glasgow. These include:

What types of degrees can I receive in creative writing?

As an undergraduate, you can earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in creative writing. As a postgraduate, you can earn a Master of Arts (MA) degree or a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD).

If you’re studying in Scotland, the types of degrees may differ slightly.

How do I know whether I have what it takes to pursue a degree in creative writing?

Before accepting you for a creative writing degree, most universities will require that you have certain A-level or equivalent grades. But academic achievements aren’t everything. If you’re looking to pursue a degree in creative writing, it’s helpful to have:

Course summary

Writing is a profession and a passion; it is also an act of community. Warwick’s MA in Writing introduces you to the real world of writing surrounded and supported by writing staff and students sharing your ambition. It shows you how to make your way in the world as a writer.

We teach in writing workshops seminars and one-to-one supervisions. Most modules are assessed by portfolios of writing in the relevant genre sometimes with an accompanying essay. Space for reading thinking and writing matters almost as much as teaching. Our campus is a good place for writers with a wide range of creative spaces and events open throughout the year.

An annual anthology

Each year the MA group produce an anthology of new writing derived from work done during their time at e latest volume Chimera was launched at an evening of celebratory readings at the Piccadilly branch of Waterstone's in June 2019. You will get the chance to be involved in the production editing writing and promotion of a new anthology seeing your work in print and gaining some invaluable hands-on experience along the way.

A career in writing

Our staff have excellent links not only with other writers but also with publishing houses literary journals and agencies with national and regional organizations such as the Arts Council PEN and the Royal Literary Fund and with other creative writing programmes both in Britain and in the USA.

Many of our alumni have forged highly successful writing careers and picked up major national and international prizes: recent examples include Sophie Mackintosh's novel The Water Cure Katy Whitehead winning the 2017 Fitzcarraldo Essay Prize and Sohini Basak's debut collection We Live in the Newness of Small Differences winning the 2016 Beverly Series.

At Warwick Thursdays our weekly literary and cultural salon you will encounter creative practitioners (typically including writers filmmakers literary translators visual artists) and indsutry guests (typically including publishers agents journalists) gaining an insight into a range of possible careers in the creative industries.

Our flexible MA in Writing is open to students from around the world.

Four taught modules (Fiction Workshop 1, Non-Fiction Workshop, or Writing Poetry), plus three other taught modules of your choice.

Entry Requirements

2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a related subject. In addition to the usual application materials, candidates will be selected on the basis of a personal statement and a portfolio of their written work. The portfolio should be a maximum of 20 pages of poetry or 5,000 words of fiction/non-fiction, or a combination of the two. You must upload this with your online application form.

Samuel dodson.

I studied BA English Literature & Creative Writing at Warwick, then carried on to do the MA in Writing. I now work as an editor for a publishing house in Farnham but I am an aspiring writer with short stories published in a number of literary anthologies. The four years I spent at Warwick were among the most formative and inspiring years anyone could ask for. I don't want to sound too much like I've just stepped out of the Dead Poet's Society, but it's genuinely difficult to overstate how good the English department at Warwick is: with engaging lectures and seminars and stimulating course material and reading lists. I based my MA dissertation on my grandfather's memoirs, which detail his experiences as a medical officer in the Second World War, and explored the relationship between memoir writing, human memory and the concept of 'truth' and fiction. Studying an MA gives you the freedom to work really hard at something you find incredibly interesting. This isn't to romanticise the experience, because it involves a lot of painstaking effort and thinking really hard about something for a prolonged period of time: days and weeks and months of going to bed and waking up with a kind of slow fire urgency and the feeling of having to get this impossible number of thoughts down on paper because they sometimes seem so ephemeral and fleeting. And it’s hard to look back on those words and realise they're not quite right, or not articulated clearly or just a sign you've drunk too much coffee. It’s an education you don't necessarily get the chance to experience in the day-in-day-out repetition of a society that does little more than tell us to go out and get things for ourselves and gratify ourselves and just 'go' all the time, without giving us the time to think hard and listen carefully and read and learn. The course structures and the facilities available to MA students are excellent, but that's something you can read in online brochures. And it wasn't because of facilities or a course structure that I decided to continue with my MA at Warwick. I knew I was making the right choice in studying the MA at Warwick because I'd seen how good the system was from my undergrad years. Thinking about it, I'm not sure there was any other choice that would have made sense.

Course Description

Writing is a profession and a passion; it is also an act of community. Warwick’s MA in Writing introduces you to the real world of writing, surrounded and supported by writing staff and students who share your ambition. It will show you how to make your way in the world as a writer.

The Warwick Writing Programme, founded in 1996, is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in Europe and was ranked first by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

Course overview

Our flexible MA in Writing is open to students from around the world.

Four taught modules (Fiction Workshop 1, Non-Fiction Workshop, or Writing Poetry), plus three other taught modules of your choice.

Across the Autumn and Spring terms, you will take four taught modules (Fiction Workshop 1 or Non-Fiction Workshop plus three other taught modules of your choice). In the summer term, you will work with a supervisor on your Long Project, for which you write a long piece of creative work in any genre that the Programme is able to supervise. This creative piece is accompanied by a shorter critical reflection.

If you study Part Time, you will take either Fiction Workshop 1 or Non-Fiction Workshop in your first Autumn term, and take one optional module in the Spring term. In your second year, you will take two optional modules (one in the Autumn and one in the Spring term) and then do your Long Project in the Summer term.

Warwick Writing Programme

The acclaimed Warwick Writing Programme is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in Europe. You will be working alongside practising, award-winning novelists, poets and literary translators. Our teaching staff includes: A.L. Kennedy, Tim Leach, Nell Stevens, Maureen Freely (Chair of the International Booker Prize 2019), Gonzalo C. Garcia and David Morley (winner of the Ted Hughes Award 2015). We are closely involved with The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Each year the winner of the award – which has in the past included Sally Rooney and Raymond Antrobus – spends a period of time as writer-in-residence at Warwick, working with students.

Minimum requirements

2: 1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a related subject.

In addition to the usual application materials, candidates will be selected on the basis of a personal statement and a portfolio of their written work. The portfolio should be a maximum of 20 pages of poetry or 5,000 words of fiction/non-fiction, or a combination of the two. You must upload this with your online application form.

The MA in Creative and Media Enterprises was the first in the UK to examine the business of creativity by focusing on the special relationship between creativity, strategic management and cultural entrepreneurship. The course facilitates an entrepreneurial and strategic approach to managing creative business, people, and ideas across the creative and media industries.

Course overview

In this programme you will be invited to develop your understanding of creative organisations, teams, value creation, and markets within the global creative economy. We encourage you to consider a creative approach to management and a managed approach to creativity, which can then be applied to a range of scenarios and industries.

You will also develop your understanding of entrepreneurship and intellectual property and its strategic and regulatory significance within the creative and media industries. This course will invite you to critically reflect on the theories and ideas that shape industry practice and help you to tackle the real challenges of running a creative business.

Core modules

Creativity and Organisation

The module examines the internal organisational dynamic of the creative business, from financial planning and human resource management to organisational theory. The module is divided into three parts. The first part examines the definition and creation of ‘value’ in the creative and media industries and relates this to issues in financial management. The second part considers the organisational structure of creative and media businesses. The third part focuses on strategic planning, incorporating a critique of ‘scientific’ approaches to management and planning, and a search for alternative models for strategic planning for small creative enterprises.

Managing Intellectual Property

Intellectual property is the currency of creative and media enterprises. In this module you will examine the legal, policy and commercial mechanisms through which intellectual property is managed. Management refers to the exploitation and protection of intellectual property both by organisations and individuals and at the level of government policy and legislation. You will explore the conflicts between different legal, commercial and political imperatives for managing intellectual property through case studies, seminars and presentations by visiting experts.

Creative Business Project

In this module you will apply your learning by participating in a specific project for a creative or media organisation. Working as a member of a small team you will deliver a strategic solution to a genuine issue or challenge faced by the company. Your project may relate to business planning and development, product or service design, or marketing strategy. Working in association with colleagues from your client company, your team will put their ideas into practice to meet the objectives of their brief. You will deepen your understanding of the dynamics of creative work, teams and organisations through the execution of your project and ongoing reflective practice.

Research Design

This module aims to prepare you for your Major Project, which is a substantial piece of independent research on a topic of your choice. The module will equip you with a broad understanding of relevant research methods from which to select an appropriate approach for your own project. It will introduce you to ethical dimensions of research. It will equip you to write an effective proposal (including research questions, rationale, explanation and justification of research methods, identifying relevant literature and data sources).

By the end of the module, you should be ready to submit your proposal and be equipped with a broad understanding of research methods in the cultural, creative and media industries field.

Major Project

The Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies is an interdisciplinary centre for teaching and research in the fields of cultural and media policy and the creative industries. The commitment to interdisciplinarity is reflected in our Major Projects, where you will be encouraged to draw on approaches from across the humanities and social sciences in producing your work. Successful projects can emerge from creative engagement with scholarly debates, from the design and analysis of original empirical work, or from some combination of these. This openness of approach is also reflected in how Major Project research can be represented.

All students will take one optional module. There are five core modules, which also includes a course specific applied management module. The bespoke applied management module for this MA is ‘Creative Business Project’ (see above). This module gives you the opportunity to apply your learning in practice- or industry-related contexts.

You will learn in an international environment through interaction with academic experts and industry practitioners.

The core modules are taught through a combination of lectures, workshops and student-led presentations and discussions. These sessions are complemented by self-directed learning and access to resources and activities in a virtual learning environment.

The course is designed to facilitate participation and critical reflection and in some modules you will have the opportunity to apply your learning in a professional context.

Class sizes

We traditionally limit class size to 20-35 students on each of the three taught Master's courses.

Typical contact hours

Typical contact hours range between 6 to 10 hours each week for core teaching – this excludes additional tutorials, workshops, and research seminars.

• A major project (written dissertation of 12,000 words) on a research topic of your choice

Additional course costs

For all MA courses, the cost of field trips or off-campus assignments are estimated to cost between £100-£200, although this will depend on which option module has been chosen or the nature of a project or placement undertaken for an applied management module.

Your personalised timetable will be complete when you are registered for all modules, compulsory and optional, and you have been allocated to your lectures, seminars and other small group classes. Your compulsory modules will be registered for you and you will be able to choose your optional modules when you join us.

The application process for courses that start in September and October 2024 will open on 2 October 2023.

Applications will close on 2 August 2024 for students who require a visa to study in the UK, to allow time to receive a CAS and complete the visa application process.

Postgraduate fairs.

Throughout the year we attend exhibitions and fairs online and in-person around the UK. These events give you the chance to explore our range of postgraduate courses, and find out what it’s like studying at Warwick. You’ll also be able to speak directly with our student recruitment team, who will be able to help answer your questions.

Warwick Talk and Tours

A Warwick talk and tour lasts around two hours and consists of an overview presentation from one of our Recruitment Officers covering the key features, facilities and activities that make Warwick a leading institution. The talk is followed by a campus tour which is the perfect way to view campus, with a current student guiding you around the key areas on campus.
