Peugeot 308 Review, For Sale, Colours, Specs, Models & News

The Peugeot 308 was launched to rapturous praise from motoring media around the world in 2014, and it even won a prestigious European Car of the Year gong – but it hasn't resonated with Australian buyers, who typically buy 11 Volkswagen Golfs for every 308 sold.

The front-wheel drive hatch's line was trimmed in 2016 to offer a 1.2-litre petrol engine, a performance-oriented 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine across its hatch and wagon lines. The 308GTI is the only manual in the line. A change of distribution in 2017 may help to improve the fortunes of the iconic brand in Australia.

Current prices range from $43,990 to $64,990 for the 308 GT and 308 GT Sport Phev .

Peugeot 308 Q&As

Check out real-world situations relating to the Peugeot 308 here, particularly what our experts have to say about them.

What you haven’t told me is whether the oil was actually low when the warning light first showed up on your dashboard (and before you topped up the oil). Perhaps the person who changed the oil didn’t add enough oil afterwards; perhaps they didn’t account for the extra half a litre required to fill the new oil filter. Even draining the oil to change it could, conceivably, cause the low-oil light to trigger, and if that’s the case, you need to re-set the light once you’re satisfied that the oil level is correct.

Re-setting this warning light varies from car to car, but an actual mechanic would probably know how to do this, so maybe a quick visit to a workshop to have the light re-set will be worth the small cost involved. By the way, I never rely on warning lights to tell me my engine oil is low. That’s what a car’s dipstick is for. Check it each week and you’ll never run the engine low on oil.

The newest car in the best condition with the fewest kilometres and the best record of service is normally the best. All are good cars and all should give you good reliable service, but using the above the Peugeot 308 would seem to be the best choice for you.

While they say it never needs to be replaced that really refers to the requirement for servicing. Cam belts do have to be replaced regularly, cam chains don’t, but like all moving parts chains are subject to normal wear and tear and given time they will wear out. To have to change a timing chain at 70,000 km, however, is unusual, and you would suspect that something is wrong. There are reports of problems on the 1.6-litre petrol engine. I would press Peugeot to replace the chain free of charge.

It needs to be a 12-volt battery with a capacity of 700-750 cold cranking amps. It also needs to fit into the battery box and have the appropriate terminal alignment. Buy a good quality battery. Any battery retailer should be able to help you.

Introduction, what car says....

We reckon someone involved in the creation of the Peugeot 308 SW estate car is a fan of the hit film School of Rock.

Why? Well, in the movie, Jack Black plays a guitarist who discovers it's possible to embrace practicality while still having fun. And that ethos has gone into the 308 SW too: it’s aiming to be sensible and useful but with a hint of fun underneath.

As you might expect, the SW is based on the Peugeot 308  and it shares that car's eye-catching looks. It's also available for the first time as a plug-in hybrid, which could be good news if you're looking for a company car  (and sets its apart from the rival  Ford Focus Estate ).

Oh, and there's also a fully electric version of the SW (as well as the hatchback) – to read about that, see our Peugeot E-308 review .

So, is the Peugeot 308 SW good enough to compete with the best estate cars  out there, or should you pick a different model? Read on to find out...

Peugeot 308 SW rear cornering

Performance & drive

What it’s like to drive, and how quiet it is, engine, 0-60mph and gearbox.

There's one petrol-only option in the Peugeot 308 SW engine range – an excellent 129bhp 1.2-litre unit. It pulls strongly from low revs, and is as at home on a motorway as it is in town, even when the car is weighed down by luggage and passengers.

What Car? Buying a car frequently asked questions

What Car? has a buying service

The sole diesel engine available is a 1.5-litre engine that matches the petrol for power. It too pulls well from low revs, but doesn't rev as sweetly as the petrol.

There are also two plug-in hybrid ( PHEV ) choices, starting with the Hybrid 180. That pairs a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 177bhp – enough for 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.

The 12.4kWh battery pack offers a WLTP-certified electric-only range of more than 40 miles. The electric motor’s instant acceleration makes driving in town effortless, and if you’re gentle with the accelerator, you can get up to motorway speeds without waking the engine.

The higher-powered PHEV version, the Hybrid 225, has the same set-up, but power from the petrol engine is boosted, and you get a combined 222bhp. It feels fast enough when you put your foot down, but we suspect most 308 SW buyers will find the Hybrid 180 powerful enough.

Suspension and ride comfort

The 308 SW rides well over most surfaces and does a reasonable job of cushioning you from larger bumps.

The Skoda Octavia Estate is comfier still, while the Ford Focus Estate and the  Seat Leon Estate  have firmer set-ups that give them better body control over undulating roads.

Peugeot 308 image

With most car models, it's best to go for smaller wheels if comfort is a priority, and the same is true here. Alloys up to 18in are available, but we'd expect 16in ones to give you the most comfortable ride. The two PHEVs are slightly firmer than pure petrol and diesel versions because of the weight of the batteries.

Still, no 308 SW is uncomfortable, and you won’t find yourself wincing every time you go over a drain cover or pothole.

The 308 SW has softer suspension and more body lean than the most agile estate cars  but it’s far from being wallowy in the corners. There’s plenty of grip on offer and the small steering is light and accurate around town.

Peugeot’s i-Cockpit interior design means it has a small steering wheel, which helps it to feel quick through turns. It doesn’t weight up much as you turn in to corners on faster roads, meaning it’s not as engaging as the Focus and Leon.

Those two rivals also offer far better body control than the 308 SW, and remain the handling benchmarks in this class.

Noise and vibration

The 308 SW isolates you from the outside world reasonably well around town, but there's a noticeable amount of tyre roar once you reach motorway speeds. That's accompanied by wind noise around the door mirrors.

The 1.2-litre petrol isn’t particularly hushed (especially at higher revs) but it doesn’t sound harsh when you work it hard.

The 1.5-litre diesel doesn't sound as pleasant, but remains quiet and is smoother than the petrol, sending fewer vibrations through the pedals and steering wheel.

The PHEVs are even quieter, especially in electric-only mode. Some of our test cars had double-glazed front windows that further cut out exterior noise.

All 308 SWs come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that you can override using paddles on the steering wheel. It shifts smoothly but can be slow to change down when you want to press on, and incredibly hesitant when setting off from stationary.

There's a stop-start system, but because it's jerky and unpredictable it makes the car tricky to drive smoothly at low speeds. The grabby and inconsistent brakes don’t help, with the light brake pedal making it difficult to judge how much pressure is required.

Driving overview

Strengths  Reasonably quiet at a cruise; respectable performance

Weaknesses  Awful auto gearbox; lots of body lean in bends; loose body control

Lawrence Cheung test driving Peugeot 308 SW

The interior layout, fit and finish

Driving position and dashboard.

The driving position in the Peugeot 308 SW is mostly sound, with plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel. Setting up your preferred position shouldn’t take too long, but the slightly offset pedals from the seat and steering wheel might hamper comfort on longer drives.

The i-Cockpit design is set up so you look over, rather than through, the small steering wheel at the standard 10in digital instrument cluster. It takes some getting used to, and if you're particularly tall or short, the wheel can obscure your view.

Higher-spec GT trim models have a 3D effect on the instrument panel, but the graphics aren't very slick. The colour contrast isn't as good as in the Audi A3 Sportback or versions of the Ford Focus Estate with a digital driver display.

The 308 SW follows the trend for having minimal physical buttons on its dashboard, but it does have toggles to let you adjust the temperature and other vehicle settings without delving too far into the infotainment screen.

If you choose Allure trim or above, you get a row of large touch-sensitive icons that you can set up to take you to commonly used features – the sat-nav or your favourite radio station, for example.

Visibility, parking sensors and cameras

Front visibility in the 308 SW is good, with a low dash and slim windscreen pillars that save you from constantly checking your sides at junctions.

The large door mirrors help when checking what’s behind you and rear visibility is better than in the hatchback  Peugeot 308  because of the larger rear windscreen and slightly thinner pillars.

Every 308 SW comes with rear parking sensors as standard, while Allure models get front and rear sensors and a rearview camera. A 360-degree camera and a self-parking system is optional on Allure and GT cars.

Eco LED headlights come as standard on Active and Allure 308s, while GT models have full matrix LED lights, which automatically adapt their pattern to provide maximum visibility without dazzling other drivers.

Sat nav and infotainment

The i-Cockpit infotainment system, presented on a 10in touchscreen in the 308 SW, is better than in earlier 308s we’ve tried. It features clear, crisp graphics and is packed with features and customisation options.

The screen can be a little slow to respond when you touch it, though, and a lack of proper buttons or haptic feedback means that using it is inherently more distracting than systems using a rotary controller.

You can bypass the  Peugeot system because wired  Apple CarPlay and  Android Auto smartphone mirroring come as standard (wireless mirroring is an option on GT models).

Or, you can just tell the car what to do instead with the natural voice recognition software. It worked well when we tested it, allowing us to ask the car to alter the temperature, change the radio station or set a new sat-nav destination merely by talking to it with "Okay Peugeot…".

Need to charge up your phone? There are two USB Type C ports in the front of the 308 SW, and two more in the rear, so everyone will be able to get enough juice for their devices.

The surfaces you’ll touch regularly in the 308 SW feel premium enough and are covered with squidgy plastics and soft-touch materials.

You don’t need to search far to find some harder, scratchier plastics lower down though, particularly around the lower door cards and central tunnel.

The Skoda Octavia Estate is better here, because while it too features harder plastics lower down, its materials feel pleasant enough to touch. The 308 SW is about on a par with the Seat Leon Estate and everything feels well screwed together and built to last.

Interior overview

Strengths  Appealing mix of interior materials; infotainment screen is crisp

Weaknesses  The driving position won’t work for everyone; the infotainment system could be snappier

Peugeot 308 SW boot open

Passenger & boot space

How it copes with people and clutter, front space.

Even those who shop both big and tall will have enough space around them in the front of the Peugeot 308 SW. There’s very little chance of you rubbing shoulders with the person sitting next to you.

You’ll also find plenty of options to stow your keys, wallet or whatever else you might want to bring with you.

Spaces range from a wide door bin to a deep cubby underneath the central arm rest, while your phone will slide neatly into a recess at the front of the centre console. This can be equipped with an optional wireless phone-charging pad.

A six-footer sitting behind someone who’s as tall as they are won’t want to be in the back of the 308 SW for very long.

Their head will be close to brushing the roof-lining and their knees will be pressed into the seatback in front of them. There’s also less space for feet under the seats than in the Seat Leon Estate and Ford Focus Estate .

Smaller adults and children will be fine, but if you plan to carry lofty passengers frequently, the Skoda Octavia Estate is definitely a better bet. Anyone in the middle back seat will be rubbing shoulders with the person next to them, and has to straddle a central tunnel, although for short journeys it should be fine.

There’s more storage in the rear, with wide door bins and a cubby for your change on the back of the centre console. The centre armrest folds down to reveal two cupholders and a tray for pens and other slim items.

Seat folding and flexibility

The 308 SW’s rear seats split and fold in a 40/20/40 arrangement, which is more versatile than the Peugeot 308 hatchback’s 60/40 set-up.

They can be dropped using handy grab handles inside the boot. That’s useful because if you’re loading up larger items and realise you need more space, you don’t need to venture around the side of the car to drop the rear bench.

The 308 SW’s boot isn’t quite up there with the Leon Estate or Octavia Estate, but it beats both the Focus Estate and the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer  for volume. There are also handy little features, including a 12V power socket, a side-mounted hook and luggage nets on either side.

Fitting in a couple of large suitcases for a family holiday will pose no problems, and we dare say even the results of an adventurous outing to Ikea won’t have you calling upon your best Tetris skills.

The boot itself is a usefully square shape, with a minimal lip at the entrance when the adjustable floor is set to its highest setting, so getting your items in and out should be a doddle.

Of course, you can drop the 308 SW’s rear seats if you need to, opening up the load volume to a generous 1,634 litres. If you go for one of the PHEV versions, the boot shrinks a little to accommodate the 12.4kWh battery pack, but it should still be more than big enough for the needs of most families.

Just be aware that if you spec the spare wheel (only available on petrol and diesel versions) it takes up most of the underfloor storage area.

Practicality overview

Strengths Decent space up front; plenty of storage space

Weaknesses Cramped rear seats; boot not as big as in Seat Leon Estate or Skoda Octavia Estate

Peugeot 308 SW interior infotainment

Buying & owning

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is, costs, insurance groups, mpg and co2.

The Peugeot 308 SW is priced broadly in line with its key rivals, but the lower-end trims give you the best value for money. The Hybrid 180 engine is our preferred option, but you’ll have to step up to the second cheapest Allure trim level to get it.

Peugeot routinely offers good discounts across its model range, and we’d expect that to hold true of the new 308 SW in time too. You can check the latest prices on our New Peugeot deals pages .

Running costs should be very cheap for the PHEV models, and they sit in low company car tax bands . The non-PHEV 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel are also economical, with low CO2 emissions.

The PHEVs take just over seven hours to charge to 100% if you’re using a three-pin plug. That drops to three hours and five minutes if you use a 7.4kW wall box charger and one hour and 55 minutes when combined with the 308 SW’s optional 7.4kW on-board charger (the standard unit is 3.7kW).

Equipment, options and extras

The 308 SW range is broken up into Active, Allure, and GT trims, and no version is poorly equipped. Standard kit includes 16in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, LED headlights, and the 10in infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Allure is our favourite trim as it adds 17in alloys, front parking sensors, a reversing camera and sat-nav, while range-topping GT introduces luxuries such as 18in alloy wheels, full-grain leather steering wheel, a 3D effect for the digital dials, ambient lighting on the doors and full matrix LED headlights.

Reliability

We don't have specific reliability data for the latest 308 SW, but Peugeot came 21st out of 32 car makers ranked in the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey .

For comparison, Ford, Seat and Skoda did better, but Vauxhall came much further down the table, in 30th place.

Every 308 SW comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, while the 12.4kWh battery pack of the PHEV versions is covered for up to eight years or 100,000 miles.

Safety and security

The 308 SW achieved four out of five stars when it was tested by Euro NCAP and testers noted a weak level of chest protection for the driver in a frontal impact. Unsurprisingly, the closely-related Vauxhall Astra achieved a similar score. The Ford Focus scored five stars, but bear in mind that that was in 2019 under less stringent testing regulations.

The list of standard safety kit on the 308 is comprehensive, with blind-spot detection, a speed limiter, cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and traffic-sign recognition all included, as well as an automatic emergency braking ( AEB ) system that can spot pedestrians and cyclists.

Costs overview

Strengths  Priced broadly in line with rivals; running costs for the PHEV should be low

Weaknesses  Relatively poor NCAP rating; standard equipment not particularly generous

For all the latest reviews, advice and new car deals, sign up to the What Car? newsletter  here

The Peugeot 308 is a hatchback family car  while the SW is the estate car version. The SW has a much bigger boot than the hatchback (608 litres versus 412 litres) and would be the one to choose if you have a dog or regularly carry a lot of luggage.

The 308 has numerous rivals, including the Ford Focus Estate , the Seat Leon Estate , the Skoda Octavia Estate  and the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer .

The 308 was too new to feature in our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey but Peugeot as a brand came in 21st place out of 32 car makers ranked.

2023 Peugeot 308 review: Hatch and wagon, first Australian drive

Peugeot’s small car makes its long-awaited comeback in three-cylinder petrol hatchback and wagon. it’s new and fresh inside and out, including the badge..

2023 Peugeot 308 GT Premium Hatch Review 11

Things we like

  • The wagon is back!
  • Updated i-Cockpit
  • Front seats

Not so much

  • No centre rear armrest
  • Sunroof cuts headroom

Sometimes things disappear for a while and you don’t miss them.

I think for a lot of people, that’s things like MySpace or the Motorola Razr or, in a few hours/days/weeks/months, Twitter. Heck, hardly anyone misses the Holden Commodore .

Interestingly, I think the Peugeot 308 isn’t one of those cases. In a shrinking market for European hatches, the 308 always stood out as something a bit different, especially in its previous guise.

You could get a 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder, right up to the fire-breathing 1.6-litre GTI that I genuinely thought was as good as the Golf GTI of the time.

2211pgt308

I bet people walked into a Peugeot dealer expecting to see it and saw nothing but 2008 , 3008 and 5008s .

You see, just before we were slapped around by the ghastly pandemic, Peugeot stuck a sign on the 308’s bit of the showroom that said, “Be right back, just getting changed.” Then the plague arrived, along with chip shortages and other supply chain nonsense.

And reading between the lines, you kind of get the idea the 308 has outperformed what were no doubt modest expectations, so Peugeot’s local importer decided to wait until there was plenty of stock.

2211pgt308

What is the Peugeot 308?

How much is it, and what do you get, how do rivals compare on value, interior comfort, space and storage, what is it like to drive, how is it on fuel, how safe is it, warranty and running costs.

  • Specifications

The Peugeot 308 is available as a small five-door hatchback and wagon.

Last seen on our shores in early 2020, you could have a 308 Allure for $30,499, an Allure wagon for $32,499, or a GT-Line hatch for $34,990 (all before on-road costs). The manual GTI fell out of the range a couple of years previously and is much-missed by an admittedly small section of the hot hatch fandom (i.e. me).

The most famous of the Peugeot 300s was probably the Pininfarina-designed 306, which was very successful here in Australia because it was a ripper of a car. Its successor, the 307 and the first 308 weren’t great cars, so sales fell away.

Peugeot's second iteration of the 308 was awfully good, but too expensive compared to its obvious rivals. And then SUVs happened.

2211pgt308

Peugeot has looked at the market and decided the cheaper Active and Allure spec levels probably wouldn’t sell in Australia. In the first half of next year, the 165kW plug-in hybrid will arrive, with a price and exact timing yet to be determined. There is no replacement for the GTI hot hatch but there is an all-electric 308 that is “under consideration”.

The new 308 is built on the Stellantis EMP2 platform which allows for internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and electric-propelled machines. As of a few weeks ago, the 308 is all three of those. At least in Europe.

You will be able to spot the new car with its bold blacked-out grille, the new Peugeot badge, Matrix LED headlights, the LED daytime running light fangs and the new claw taillights. The new Olivine green will catch your eye as well.

2211pgt308

At launch, three versions are available. The 308 GT Hatch starts at a formidable $43,990, rising to $48,990 for the Premium Hatch.

The wagon tops the range at $50,490 and is only available in GT Premium spec. All these prices are before on-road costs.

2211pgt308

Also along for the ride is Peugeot’s new internet-connected 3D Navigation.

Like the Connected Services of sister brand Citroen, Peugeot's TomTom-run system powers a range of cleverness like finding things you need, car park spaces, daily fuel prices, live traffic and monthly map updates for three years.

2211pgt308

The ten-speaker Focal stereo in the GT Premium is some kind of complicated scientific experiment. The supplier worked with Peugeot on what materials were where, the design and the angles and how thick the glass is (probably). The result is impressive sound quality that feels like it fills the car.

I’ll be quite interested to see the results of the wagon coming only in Premium spec, too, but sadly without the Focal system.

The new 3D digital dashboard is really good. It seems slimmer than the old one so the relationship with the low-set steering wheel is improved. The new 10-inch touchscreen is vastly better than the unit it replaces, with new software and hardware. Both screens are configurable, too, which is nice.

2211pgt308

If the pricing wasn’t a giveaway, Peugeot has its sights set firmly on the premium market, which fits between mainstream and luxury.

To that end, the most obvious competitor is the Volkswagen Golf which starts at $34,690 for the 110 TSI, rising to $36,990 for the TSI Life and $39,990 for the 110 TSI R-Line (all before on-road costs). The wagons add a $2000 premium but aren’t available in R-Line trim.

Give or take a few bits and pieces, the Golf 110 TSI R-Line hatch is about the same specification as the 308 GT Premium, but is $4000 less.

Skoda’s newly-released Fabia is available only in well-specced Monte Carlo form. It’s a much bigger unit than the old one and stuffed full of gear, if not quite as much as the 308 GT hatch. That weighs in at $39,990 drive-away and has a longer warranty.

Wheels Reviews 2021 Volkswagen Golf Base Model Grey Dynamic Front Hard Cornering

Peugeot has been doing great interiors for a few years now, starting with the car this replaces.

You still get the whacky small-and-low steering wheel matched with the high-set instrument pack that you’ll either love or not buy. It’s worth getting the hang of because Peugeot has refined it over the years.

The 308's front seats feel great whether they’re cloth or leather. They lean towards the sporty end of the spectrum so may not be for everyone, but I found them very comfortable.

A fresh dashboard design reminds me a lot of the 3008/5008 pair but the new screen is the real deal and much nicer to use than the old one, which could be a bit slow off the mark. It’s crisp, too and goes some way to justifying the price of admission.

2211pgt308

Two cup holders in the centre console have a lot of room because Peugeot has taken the VW route of a little pokey tongue for a transmission selector. There’s an open tray behind them, a space for your phone under the centre stack (with wireless charging pad) and a bin under the armrest. Bottle holders in the doors, too.

In the rear, things are tight in the hatch, as in the old car. It’s no worse than a Corolla or Hyundai i30 , though. Nobody will want to sit in the middle, which makes the lack of a centre armrest even more baffling. You do get two USB-C ports, though they won’t hold up your elbows.

Between the GT and Premium, the major interior change is the upholstery, going from what I consider a quite appealing Alcantara and fabric mix to a slightly overwrought Nappa leather with lots of perforation and stitching.

2211pgt308

2023 Peugeot 308 boot space

As far as boot space goes, the new 308 is a genuine mixed bag. The GT Hatch kicks off with a pretty hefty 412 litres, rising to 1323 with the 60:40 split-fold backrest down. That’s quite a bit for a hatchback.

A fully sick subwoofer under the boot floor causes the Premium Hatch to lose space, down to 384 litres/1295 litres.

The wagon is an absolute monster at 608 litres and 1634 litres with the 40:20:40 split-fold backrest out of the way. That’s a mammoth cargo area, coming up on the larger Skoda Octavia and running almost level with the Golf wagon. The boot floor also offers two positions for maximum volume.

2211pgt308

One of the highlights of the old 308 was the 1.2-litre Puretech engine, and it reappears here in the third-generation 308.

It’s a brilliant engine, with very little turbo lag, quiet and, last time I drove one, commendably easy on fuel. This is the only engine available in the 308 at the moment, so it’s fortunate that it’s a good one.

Distributing drive to only the front wheels is an Aisin eight-speed automatic. This is a familiar transmission in the Peugeot- Citroen empire and the company tends to do an excellent job setting it up.

It works extremely well with the 1.2 and given it has so many gears, the 308 manages a fuss-free sprint to 100km/h in under ten seconds. While not quick, it’s not slow either.

2211pgt308

A decent slab of torque is available low down but seems to carry a long way through the rev range. Part of the drive program was quite steeply uphill and very twisty, with some awkward hairpins. The 308 lapped it up, pulling strongly uphill once in its stride.

It’s also a pretty decent overtaker on the motorway and while our B-road excursions also meant a few well-planned overtakes of farmers’ utes, the speed kept building, the engine not falling off boost as the transmission grabbed another gear.

The way it handles reminds me a little of the 306. That car – famously – had an innovative rear axle with passive rear steer. This used lateral G-forces to steer the rears in the same direction as the fronts during cornering and had the net result of being quite a lot of fun.

2211pgt308

While the new car doesn’t have that kind of expensive trickery, it feels a lot like it. The front end is pretty sharp for what is a mainstream hatchback in its home market. The Michelin Primacy 4 tyres help, but it’s got a great chassis, even with torsion beams at the rear.

The engine shone in that back road run, but the security of the 308’s handling was even better than the old 308, with good grip at both ends but a willingness of the rear to come out and play if you were really enjoying yourself.

Despite plenty of potholes to swerve around and lots of bumps and ambitiously narrow roads, the 308 was unshakeable. Out on the freeway it was smooth and quiet, but you do need a smooth surface for a properly hushed cabin.

2211pgt308

That was probably the worst thing I could say about the way it drives and rides – it’s a touch noisy, but no worse than most cars in this class. Of course, more power would be nice, but until next year, 96kW is your lot.

Driving the wagon feels very similar but with a longer wheelbase, the ride is a little more settled on the rough stuff. Like its predecessor, it’s a lot of fun and I had to keep reminding myself it was a wagon. It’s a tad slower, of course, but didn’t feel any noisier than the hatch despite the cavernous boot. It looks great, too.

Peugeot’s i-Cockpit has “evolved” (their word) but the small steering wheel setup feels as good as ever while the slight re-jig of the whole layout makes it feel a bit more natural. I was always a fan, but some folks find it a bit of a challenge. It isn’t really, just needs a short period of adjustment for most people.

2211pgt308

As we drove this on a launch program, it’s difficult to accurately assess fuel usage, so we’ll wait until we have it for a week. The previous car was pretty frugal, though. The downside of a Euro is the need for premium petrol, of course, but the Peugeot isn’t alone.

The back seats feature two sets of ISOFIX points and three top-tether anchors for securing child seats.

ANCAP is yet to issue a safety rating but in Euro NCAP testing, the 308 scored four stars. Euro NCAP's report on this less-than-stellar result is below.

Peugeot offers a five-year warranty with unlimited kilometres, which matches up nicely with pretty much everyone else except Kia and Mitsubishi.

Servicing is expensive if you go the pay-as-you-go route, working out at a hefty $2489 over five years, or $498 per year. However, you can save a lot of money by going with pre-paid maintenance, with three years costing $1000 (saves $427) and five years $1800 (saves $689). You’d be nuts not to if you can afford the pre-paid option.

This is a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Golf’s five-year service plan.

Prices are up, but so is the equipment level. Forty-four grand is a solid start for a hatchback, especially when Hyundai will sell you a tidy-handling car of similar size and shape with a lot more grunt and a handy chassis for ten grand less.

Thing is, though, none of its competitors is a Peugeot. While that might be stating the obvious, there’s a certain something (no, not a je ne sais quoi , I’m just slightly better than that) about the way the 308 drives. It seems happy enough pottering around, cruises effortlessly despite its titchy engine and is packed full of stuff.

Plenty of quality remains in the small car segment, but none really have the Peugeot’s surprisingly coherent but different interior design, comfortable ride and super-competent vibe.

It’s an interesting car that will definitely keep the fans happy, but might draw a few people in from the VW firmament looking for something a bit special. It has to be special for the money, so it’s going to be very interesting to see who bites and how often.

New Peugeot 308 2022 review

We try the all-new peugeot 308 on british roads to see if it stands a chance in the competitive hatchback class.

Peugeot’s all-new 308 feels even more like a premium product, in keeping with the brand’s push upmarket. The French hatch has plenty in its armoury to trouble the likes of the VW Golf and Ford Focus , not to mention the many SUVs that have stolen sales over the past decade. But an awkward driving position and a lack of interior space slightly undermine the comfort, refinement and technology that the 308 offers.

The humble family hatchback has fallen out of favour with buyers craving an SUV , but all the major brands still have something to offer in the segment – not least because hatchbacks still sell in reasonable numbers. Which is why Peugeot has introduced a new 308 . We’re driving the 1.2-litre PureTech here, which is likely to be the best-selling model.

We won’t dwell on the car’s looks for too long, although Peugeot has worked hard to give the 308 a distinctive style that makes some of its competitors look a tad dull. The firm’s trademark ‘fang’ daytime running lights sit astride pinched LED headlights that flow into the grille, and there are plenty of creases and slashes in the bodywork heading to the rear, which features ‘three-claw’ rear lights.

It all looks very premium, and this feel continues inside, with our GT Premium-spec car boasting a classy mix of fabric, piano-black plastic and man-made leather.

There are plenty of storage bins dotted around, too, although you’ll lose a tiny bit of room underneath the armrest in the hybrid models. Boot space also shrinks should you choose the hybrid, from a decent 412 litres to just 361 litres.

Peugeot 308 UK - rear

The latest 308 is based on the same EMP2 platform as the previous-generation car, plus many other models in the Stellantis group. However, while the platform offers some flexibility in layout, rear legroom in the 308 is cramped if you’re sitting behind someone tall. Thick C-pillars make it feel a bit claustrophobic in the back, too.

GT Premium models offer heated and electrically adjustable seats as standard. You also get Peugeot’s Drive Assist Pack Plus with lane positioning and adaptive cruise control, along with a 360-degree parking camera, lane assist and heated front seats with massaging function.

There’s a 10-inch digital dash and a 10.1-inch touchscreen, below which are Peugeot’s ‘i-Toggles’ that act as shortcuts to certain menus. They’re big and easy to use on the move, but sometimes you can accidentally press them if you rest your hand to use the main screen.

It all works relatively well, with decent graphics and responses, plus lots of features. But the i-Cockpit set-up means you have to sit quite high up so you can see the full driver’s display, otherwise some information will be completely blocked off by the flat-topped steering wheel.

Peugeot 308 UK - dash

On the move, the standard auto box delivers smooth shifts. The 128bhp 1.2 PureTech petrol engine isn’t especially pokey meaning a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds, so performance is best described as adequate, feeling lethargic at times. However it’s relatively quiet both around town and at motorway speeds.

The small steering wheel does give the 308 a sporty feel, but while the rack itself is quick and direct, there’s not a tremendous amount of feedback.

Peugeot has managed to mix sportiness with a comfortable ride, too. There’s plenty of grip and not much body roll, while even on the largest 18-inch wheels it glides relatively well over rough roads.

The 308 range starts from £24,635, but you’ll want to move to at least Allure Premium, which starts at £27,385, to really make the most of the Peugeot’s classy interior. Granted, most will be looking for a finance deal, and the Peugeot 308 looks even better on this front.

Based on an annual limit of 10,000 miles, an Allure Premium model will cost £285 per month over 48 months with a £5,000 deposit – a similarly specced Golf will cost £300. Step up to this high-spec GT Premium version, and you’ll be looking at £358, which still looks like reasonably good value.

Peugeot 308 Hybrid review

This plug-in volkswagen golf rival stands out thanks to its styling, interior and handling – however, its boot capacity and rear cabin space aren't class-leading.

new 308 boot space

4.0 out of 5

  • Good to drive
  • Interior quality
  • Limited practicality
  • Expensive top-spec versions

The Peugeot 308 has been around since 2007, but it was only with the launch of the second generation in 2013 that the car really became a credible competitor for the likes of the Volkswagen Golf , Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra .

Now, the third-generation 308 has arrived, sharing underpinnings with both the latest Astra and the upmarket DS 4 , but boasting striking exterior styling to set it clearly apart from its stablemates. Like those cars, it’s available now with plug-in hybrid power , while  a fully electric version  will arrive in 2023. We’re concentrating on the 308 hybrid hatchback in this review, but have also driven the SW estate version .

There are two plug-in hybrid 308s available, both using a 110bhp electric motor and 12.4kWh battery, as well as an eight-speed automatic gearbox. But total power output jumps from 178bhp in the Hybrid 180 model to 222bhp in the Hybrid 225, thanks to a punchier version of the petrol engine under the bonnet.

Peugeot 308 Hybrid UK

To be honest, it's hard to tell the difference between the two in everyday driving, as they deliver their power in a very similar way, with an initial kickdown from the gearbox, some petrol-engine torque and then a wave of electric-motor boost. This is borne out by their 0-62mph times, which are just a tenth of a second apart.

Peugeot claims up to 37 miles of pure-electric driving is possible, although you’re likely to get closer to 30 in normal driving. That should be enough for most commutes, however, and you still benefit from a reduction in company-car tax compared to the equivalent diesel. The Mercedes A 250 e does attract a lower BiK rate of 8% thanks to its longer zero-emissions range, but the 308’s 12% rating is nothing to scoff at regardless.

So why chose the 308 over any of its similarly electrified rivals? First of all, the cabin is a masterpiece in modern design. While the French brand’s i-Cockpit dashboard set-up remains polarising, material quality overall is very good, (save for a few cheaper plastic pieces on the centre console) and the seats are both comfortable and supportive.

All plug-in hybrid 308s get a 10-inch central infotainment touchscreen as standard, which isn't the most intuitive system we’ve used, but it’s responsive and has a row of shortcut buttons under the screen for quicker access to key functions, with some additional physical 'piano keys' for systems such as the climate control and heated rear screen. Plus, you get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connectivity as standard, too.

Peugeot 308 Hybrid UK

The 308 is also a sportier and more engaging alternative to its comfort-focused sister car, the DS 4 . That’s not to say the Peugeot’s ride is harsh – far from it – but it just feels more poised and controlled. Even this heavier plug-in hybrid version is able to stay admirably flat during fast changes of direction. The small steering wheel also contributes to the sense of fun, although isn’t exactly brimming with feedback. A Sport mode brings more weight to the steering and sees the car hold on to gears for longer when accelerating.

Like a lot of plug-in hybrids, though, the Peugeot is at its most relaxed when running on electric power, as it’s capable of quietly gliding along at motorway speeds. Gentle cruising in hybrid mode, even when the engine is engaged, is fairly quiet, too. Put your foot down and the boost from the electric motor shows the 308 can be a quick car, but doing so also unleashes a harsh, strained sound from the petrol engine as it kicks in.

The eight-speed transmission isn’t the smartest we've experience, sometimes taking too long to shift up or down or shifting up at the wrong time for the sake of fuel efficiency. But, switch to manual mode and use the paddles on the steering wheel and gear changes suddenly become quick. There's also a B mode for regenerative braking that some may find a little aggressive at first, however the system adapts to your inputs. Sadly, it seems to reset after your turn off the car, which is a quite frustrating.

Topping up the 308’s battery regularly will not only ensure you can move as many miles as possible on electric power, but also reduces running costs. As standard, the plug-in 308 comes with a 3.6kW on-board charger, meaning fully recharging the 12.4kWh battery will take around three-and-a-half hours from a wallbox . You can upgrade to a 7kW unit that cuts the time to two hours from a point capable of that speed. Don't keep the battery topped up, on petrol power alone the Peugeot will struggle to return more than 40mpg due to the dead weight, compared to the roughly 250mpg Peugeot claims the plug-in hatchback can achieve.

Peugeot 308 Hybrid UK

Where the 308 hybrid falters is practicality. The biggest issue is the amount of room in the rear seats, where taller adults may struggle for space. Head and legroom are adequate for average-sized adults, but nothing more despite this latest 308 being 105mm longer than its predecessor – even the wheelbase is up 55mm. This is a problem we also found with the DS 4 and with the latest Vauxhall Astra .

Boot space for this hatchback variant also drops from 412 litres in the petrol-powered model to 361 litres and there’s no underfloor storage for the charging cables. However, the amount of boot space in the 308 hybrid is more than the plug-in Mercedes A-Class or SEAT Leon e-Hybrid can offer, and remember there’s an estate version of the 308 that boasts 548 litres of boot space if you need that extra load capacity.

Prices for the plug-in hybrid 308 hatchback can get close to £39,000 if you go for the more potent Hybrid 225 powertrain in the GT or GT Premium trims, which provide extra luxuries and safety features. The top-spec GT Premium features a Focal stereo, 360-degree cameras and larger 18-inch wheels. GT and GT Premium cars also get a 3D digital instrument display, which we’ve previously seen in some of the brand’s other models like the e-208 hatchback . It creates two layers of information, bringing important details to the fore.

Go for the entry-level Allure or Allure Premium trim levels, though, and you still get 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lights and a 10-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto . Plus, the cheaper Hybrid 180 powertrain can still manage a 37-mile electric driving range and returns better fuel economy, too, according to Peugeot.

Overall, despite its practicality shortcomings, this latest Peugeot 308 is an accomplished all-rounder that’s good to drive and stands out in the crowded plug-in hybrid hatchback class thanks to its styling and interior.

New Peugeot 308 plug-in hybrid: prices, specs and on-sale date

BBC TopGear

This is the new Peugeot 308 SW estate

Nope, Peugeot hasn’t forgotten about the estate just yet…

Peugeot 308 SW

We must admit, we’d almost completely forgotten that the old 308 SW was a thing. Sorry, Peugeot.

Anyway, this is the all-new 308 SW (that’s Peugeot-speak for estate, in case you hadn’t noticed) and it is a good-looking SW. The perfect antidote to all those baby crossovers we so often moan about on these pages.

For the new 308 hatchback (unveiled a couple of months back) Peugeot added 55mm into the wheelbase compared to the previous generation. And now, for the SW, it has stretched that extended wheelbase by yet another 55mm to allow for more boot space and more legroom for rear passengers. Lovely.

It’s simple stuff, really. As is the removal of the hatch’s black strip between the claw-like rear lights, which “increases the amount of perceived bodywork” according to Peugeot. The front end is extremely similar to the hatch too, with LED lights on all trim levels, that new family grille and the now-familiar daytime running light fangs.

Being an estate it’s fairly aerodynamic, with a drag coefficient of 0.277, and the all-important boot space stands at 608 litres with the rear seats up and 1,634 litres if you fold them flat. For reference, the Skoda Octavia leads the way in this segment (of course it does) with 640 litres seats up and 1,700 litres seats down, whilst the Peugeot almost exactly matches the Ford Focus estate.

On the inside, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit is back once again with another attempt to convince buyers that they should be looking over a steering wheel at the dials rather than through it. The screen for the dials is a 10-inch display here, as is the central infotainment touchscreen. The touch-sensitive shortcut buttons below the touchscreen can be customised to link to different functions.

Now, we best get onto the engines. Both the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and the 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel make just 128bhp, but the plug-in hybrids can be had with a combined output of either 178bhp or 222bhp. Both get a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery and manage around 37 miles of all-electric range, although said battery will eat slightly into your boot space.

“Although directly challenged by SUVs, this segment has remained constant since 2010, demand in Europe remains strong and sales forecasts are stable for the years to come,” says Peugeot.

“Long live the estate car,” says TG.

Peugeot 308 SW estate - Practicality & boot space (2014-2021)

The 308 sw has one of the biggest boots in the family estate car class.

Buyers of the 308 SW are likely to have families and Peugeot has worked hard to make this car as practical and as spacious as possible. So much so that it has a boot that rivals cars in the class above. All-round visibility is good and there’s sufficient scope to alter the driving position so you can find the most comfortable position.

Peugeot 308 SW interior space & storage

Interior space is a slight bugbear for the 308 SW. Storage spaces for odds and ends are pretty average and the glovebox is very small. As this car was originally designed to be left-hand drive, on right-hand-drive versions the fuse box is inside the glovebox, rendering it useless for anything other than a drinks can or a pocket-size map.

And even though it’s longer than the hatchback, the SW estate’s rear legroom isn’t great – there’s just enough space for adults. Tall passengers don’t get much in the way of headroom either, a situation that’s made even worse if the panoramic sunroof is equipped.

new 308 boot space

Lifting items in and out of the 308 SW’s boot is a breeze, thanks to a wide opening, low load lip and low overall boot height. With the seats up, the 308 SW has 660 litres of luggage capacity. If you fold the seats down (by pulling a lever), capacity jumps to a maximum of 1,775 litres and there’s a completely flat floor. That’s more than an Audi A6 Avant estate or BMW 5 Series Touring estate, both of which are significantly larger and pricier than the Peugeot.

new 308 boot space

There are some useful rails for tying items down, while the parcel shelf is easy to remove and has its own storage space under the boot floor. And there are also some useful cubbyholes under the boot floor.

Maximum trailer weights vary depending on the engine, but the 308 SW can tow between 1,200 and 1,600kg.

Peugeot 308 Hatchback boot space, practicality and safety

Peugeot 308 Hatchback (2014-) UK rhd model in metallic brown. Boot and load space

Written by Lawrence Cheung Published: 18 March 2021 Updated: 25 October 2023

  • For a hatchback it boasts a big boot
  • Rear passenger room is adequate
  • Lots of storage space in the cabin

Practicality is one area where the Peugeot 308 really impresses, with a big boot and plenty of interior storage – including a cooled glove box and large door bins that can take a 1.5-litre water bottle.

The central console has a sliding cover to reveal a cup holder that can be swiveled out of the way so you can stash wallets and phones. It sounds okay in theory, but in reality it’s poorly-sited and awkward to get at. Plus there is a USB  and aux-in connection  with a small shelf directly under the centrally mounted touchscreen that’s ideal for iPods and MP3 players, but a bit small for larger smartphones.

Peugeot 308 rear seats 2017

The rear seats also feature very clear Isofix  attachment points so it should be straightforward to fit two compatible child seats in the back. Those sat in the rear also get map pockets and long door bins, although you may struggle to store taller items here.

Does it fit in the garage?

There’s nothing unusual to note about the 308’s dimensions – it slots comfortably into the family hatchback market alongside similarly-sized rivals like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra .

Peugeot 308 boot space 2017

The large boot measures 470 litres – significantly larger than the Ford Focus and the VW Golf , with the Honda Civic running close to it. Plus, the 60/40 spilt rear seats can be folded by pressing a button to boost luggage space to just over 1,300 litres.

Peugeot 308 safety

  • Full five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating
  • Lots of passive and active safety systems
  • Autonomous safety kit in Driver Assistance Pack

Buyers should be reassured about Peugeot 308 safety levels thanks to an extensive range of both passive and active systems which helped the car to achieve a full five star rating during its round of tests with Euro NCAP .

There is the usual comprehensive range of airbags including driver, passenger and side ones plus systems designed to help avoid an accident in the first place such as anti-lock brakes, system to maximise braking effort and effectiveness and electronic stability control to help prevent the car going into a skid.

Peugeot 308 rear lights 2017

From 2017 Peugeot made its Claw Effect rear lights standard equipment, which are always on like the daytime running lights at the front, adding style and making you more visible too. A Driver Assistance Pack is also offered with adaptive cruise control , emergency collision alert and braking system, blindspot monitoring , traffic sign recognition and a 180-degree reversing camera.

The adaptive cruise control function also gained a braking feature as part of the 2017 overhaul, while the blindspot monitoring provides a visible warning on the door mirror when a car is alongside you, even if it isn’t in your peripheral vision.

Peugeot 308 adaptive radar sensor 2017

The collision alert and braking system work together to detect whether a vehicle in front is too close and in the first instance provides an audible and visual warning (that’s the alert bit) to the driver to start to brake. If there is no braking or not enough and a collision is imminent then the system applies the brakes automatically.
