Getting to Know the HSPT Exam: Format and Sample Questions
Are you an eighth-grade student looking to attend a Catholic high school? The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is part of the admissions process for many Catholic high schools nationwide that use HSPT score results to make admissions decisions, scholarship award selections, and curriculum placement determinations.
The exam takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to answer 298 multiple-choice questions. You don’t lose points for incorrect answers, so try to answer every question — even if you need to guess.
The HSPT exam tests your skills in five distinct sections:
1. Verbal Skills
The verbal skills section, which is 16 minutes long, is designed to measure your ability to perform reasoning tasks that involve the use of words. This is a core performance ability that spans a wide array of content areas, including language, reading, and various areas within social studies. Some of the topics included in this section include analogy, logic, verbal classifications, synonyms, and antonyms.
Let’s look at a sample verbal skills question:
2. Quantitative Skills
The quantitative component, which is 30 minutes long, measures your ability to answer reasoning problems involving numbers and quantities. The cognitive skills you’ve acquired, both in the classroom and in your everyday life, are tested during this section of the exam. Some of the topics included in this section include sequence, reasoning, geometric comparison, and non-geometric comparison.
The following is an example of a quantitative skills question:
The reading section, which is 25 minutes long, tests your overall reading comprehension, recognition of key details and ideas, ability to identify central thoughts and premises, how well you make logical inferences, and your understanding of vocabulary in context. Some of the topics included in this section include comprehension, vocabulary in context, literal comparison, inferential comparison, main idea, drawing conclusions, reasoning, implied characterization, critical composition, author purpose, compare/contrast, predictions, fact vs. fiction, and vocabulary.
Here’s a sample reading comprehension question:
The Mathematics section, which is 45 minutes long, is designed to measure your ability to perform arithmetic operations, apply key math concepts, and utilize sound mathematical reasoning to solve problems. Some of the topics included in this section include numbers and numeration, measurements, geometry, algebra, statistics, and probability.
Let’s look at a sample measurements question:
5. Language Skills
The language skills section, which is 25 minutes long, evaluates your knowledge of proper English language capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling, usage, and composition. Some of the topics of this section include punctuation, capitalization, correct/incorrect usage, noun/pronoun, verb/adverb/adjective, other parts of speech, spelling, and composition.
Here is a sample language skills question:

There’s also an optional 40-question test in either science, mechanical aptitude, or religion, however, many schools do not use any of the optional tests.

Miruku grabs more capital as its plant-based dairy tech reaches proof of concept
While the food tech investment sector figured itself out last year, Miruku, a New Zealand-based food tech company, was busy getting ahead of molecular farming technology. “Miruku has not only aimed to navigate the challenges presented by the shifting climate impacting traditional dairy production, but has also broadened our focus to address critical issues of food security and nutrition,” Palfreyman said via an email interview. TechCrunch profiled the company in 2022 when it raised $2.4 million in seed funding to develop molecular farming technology to program plant cells to be mini factories for producing proteins and other molecules, like fats and sugars, traditionally made by animals.

Feb. 18, 2024
SUGAR LAND, TX (Covering Katy News) – Clements High School National Art Honor Society students, in partnership with Special Olympics of Texas, recently hosted a unified art presentation with students who have cognitive disabilities.
The “Unified Gallery” was the culmination of a month-long project. Honor Society students served as mentors to their partner student. Each pair decided on a topic and what materials they would use to complete their projects that was featured in the gallery.
Clements High School National Art Honor Society students, in partnership with Special Olympics of Texas, recently hosted a unified art presentation with students who have cognitive disabilities.
Clements High School student Hermani Koppolu kept a journal about the time she spent with her mentee, Kendall.
"Today was a good day," Koppolu wrote. "Kendall was prepared and ready to draw. When we discussed some of our favorite times of year and weather, we found that we both really like rain, especially thunderstorms. We did a watercolor piece of stormy rain clouds and lightning bolts.”
Another day Koppolu wrote, “We finished the canvas today! We learned about painting techniques and how to fill up a water cup and rinse our brushes. Kendall has learned so many different skills and is becoming an expert in painting!”
After the art gallery was installed, a special ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the project and the new friendships that were made while working on it.
Each Unified Artist was presented with a unique award for their art project.
