Listen to useful tips from Sylvia and Iris on how to create a study plan that’ll help you learn a language effectively

Giving a successful business presentation is a prerequisite for any leadership position. Whether you’re managing a small team or an entire company, leaders are expected to oversee projects, conduct progress updates, lead brainstorming sessions, and pitch to clients. Ultimately, growing these skills comes down to your ability to make a business presentation.

As a bonus, improving your business presentations shows you’re taking the initiative to grow your leadership skills . It will also help you become more confident in business English, especially if it’s not your native language.

Let’s dive into a step-by-step guide to how to make a business presentation, followed by some helpful tips and templates that will help you shine in your next meeting.

How to make a business presentation in 6 steps

Think back on some of the most memorable presentations you’ve seen. The speaker was likely poised, confident, and ready to answer any questions. However, most people aren’t born to be charismatic public speakers who can talk about any topic at a moment’s notice. It requires practice and preparation.

But the good news is: you could be that person too! With enough time to plan it out, you’ll lead your next presentation with the confidence of a leader . Here is our step-by-step guide to how to make a business presentation, from start to finish.

Start your business presentation by deciding what you want to do. Do you want to inform, persuade, or motivate your audience? This is particularly helpful if you are presenting in a second language because it will help you focus the presentation on key messages and simplify the process of conveying complex ideas.

When setting goals, use the SMART method . Make them specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This method helps make your goals clear and doable, giving you a solid roadmap for your presentation.

For example, a salesperson’s main aim might be to convince customers about the advantages of a new product. In this case, the presentation would be tailored to highlight the product’s unique features and its return on investment to make a compelling case for why it stands out in the market.

This approach will result in a presentation where every slide, every statistic, and every story told aligns with the overarching goal of your presentation.

A well-structured plan not only aids in clear communication but also provides a sense of confidence and control over your material.

Begin by listing the main ideas you want to discuss in your presentation. This should happen before you even design your presentation (sometimes called a “slide deck”). Break your presentation into three parts: a clear introduction, a detailed middle, and a short conclusion . Remember, the goal is to convey your message effectively, not to overwhelm your audience or yourself.

For example, if you’re a project manager leading a project kickoff meeting, your presentation agenda should include clear objectives, timelines, and defined roles. This plan will ensure you cover every critical point of the project in the meeting.

Another good rule for clear and brief presentations is Guy Kawasaki’s 10/20/30 rule . This rule says the best presentations should have no more than 10 slides , last less than 20 minutes , and use at least 30-point fonts . This will help your audience stay engaged without being bombarded with too much information at once.

Telling a story in your business presentation is very powerful. Storytelling changes your message from just giving information to something engaging and memorable. In fact, a study revealed that 63% of attendees remember stories from a presentation, but only 5% recall the statistics.

Why does storytelling work so well? It’s simple: stories forge emotional connections and make complex data relatable. When you show facts and numbers, put them in a way that is important to your audience . Ask yourself how this information will impact their work or decision-making, especially if they are stakeholders in a shared project.

Try integrating personal experiences, anecdotes, or relevant case studies that illustrate your key points. For example, if you’re a product manager, you might use a customer success story to demonstrate the real-world impact of a new feature. This can help sales representatives understand why customers value the product, which they can use in future sales presentations.

That being said, we can’t throw out statistics altogether. You still need to use data, research, or expert opinions to support your ideas. This makes your presentation more believable and convincing.

When you present evidence-based claims, you’re not just sharing an opinion but providing verifiable facts. This instills confidence in your audience and demonstrates your thorough understanding of the subject . For instance, an IT professional proposing new software can bolster their argument with data on efficiency improvements and testimonials from other companies.

Start by reviewing relevant and trustworthy evidence. This could include incorporating up-to-date statistics, quoting subject matter experts, or referencing results from recent studies. Make sure the evidence directly relates to your topic and adds to your presentation’s story . Data from your own projects, like sales results or marketing strategies, can be very effective.

Here are some helpful business presentation phrases that you can use to introduce data during your talk:

  • Let’s look at the data to back this up.
  • According to a study by [source], we find that…
  • [Name], an expert in [field], supports this idea, stating that…
  • The statistics clearly show…
  • As you can see by this research from [institution or source]…

As we said earlier, incorporating evidence is more than just throwing in some numbers and quotes. You need to integrate them into your presentation so they strengthen your argument and resonate with your audience . When done right, using data transforms your presentation from a subjective viewpoint to an objective, fact-based discussion.

Visual aids like graphs , images, animations, and videos make complex information easy to understand and remember .

For example, a corporate trainer explaining a complicated process can use infographics to clarify. Similarly, you can use videos to illustrate case studies or bring testimonials to life, adding a human touch to your presentation.

Interactive parts make your presentation more lively and get the audience involved. Activities like live polls or quizzes during a webinar maintain audience interest and provide instant feedback so you can gauge the effectiveness of your presentation in real time.

Incorporating these elements into your presentation requires a thoughtful approach. Only use visuals and interactive parts if they help support and strengthen your message .

For instance, using a graph to illustrate market trends makes the data more accessible, while a live poll can be a great way to kick off a discussion or gather opinions on a topic.

Some phrases that you can use to introduce visual or interactive elements include:

  • As you can see in this graph/chart…
  • This infographic illustrates the main points effectively.
  • Let’s watch a short video clip that highlights this concept.
  • I’d like to draw your attention to this diagram…
  • To get a better idea of everyone’s knowledge on this topic, let’s fill out this brief survey and discuss the results.

The key is to ensure that these elements are integrated seamlessly into your presentation, enhancing rather than distracting from your core message.

Thinking about the questions your audience might ask shows you know your stuff and are confident about it . It’s especially vital to prepare answers if English isn’t your first language. This will give you the confidence to handle the interactive part of the presentation, where language skills are tested in real time.

For example, a financial analyst discussing market trends should be ready for questions about future market predictions and their impact on investments. Similarly, a business consultant should have case studies and statistics at hand to answer queries about their proposed strategies.

Remember: practice is key. Anticipate the types of questions that might arise and prepare your responses. Practice a Q&A session with a coworker to better your answers and how you give them.

Below are some phrases to help you prepare for a Q&A session:

  • I’m open to any questions you might have.
  • Feel free to ask if anything wasn’t clear or if you need more information.
  • I’d love to hear your thoughts or questions on this topic.
  • Let’s take some time for a Q&A session now.
  • I’m here to clarify any points or answer your questions.

You should also practice handling unexpected questions gracefully . Remember, the goal is not just to answer the questions but to do so in a way that recaps your main message and leaves a lasting impression.

5 business presentation tips

Now that you know how to make a business presentation, let’s review some of our best advice for taking your presentation from good to great.

In a presentation, less is often more, especially when it comes to your slides. Imagine a slide that’s just a wall of text. Not only does it become difficult to follow, but it also tempts your audience to read ahead, disrupting the sync between what you say and what they read. The key is simplicity.

Use bullet points and only put one to two ideas on each slide. This approach helps in breaking down information into digestible chunks. Remember, each slide should focus on one main idea to keep your audience’s attention directed and clear.

Visuals can be a powerful tool as well. Instead of paragraphs of text, use images, graphs, or icons to convey your message . For instance, in a business meeting, rather than listing all product features on one slide, spread them across multiple slides, each accompanied by a relevant image or icon.

Another useful tip is to utilize the presenter or speaker notes feature in tools like Google Slides or PowerPoint. This feature stores your detailed notes to keep the slides clean and focused.

In the art of delivering a good presentation , how you speak is as crucial as what you speak about. Clear and slow speech aids in better comprehension, making your presentation more accessible and effective.

Practice your speech to get used to your speed. Try recording yourself, then listen back to monitor your clarity and speed. You should also note where to improve your English pronunciation , which will help you sound more fluent.

Pay attention to the rhythm of your speech and use pauses strategically for emphasis. This will help communicate your points better while giving your audience enough time to absorb and process the information.

Another aspect to consider is the amount of eye contact you make during your presentation. Studies suggest maintaining eye contact for about 60% to 70% of your presentation can create a stronger emotional connection with your audience . Combined with clear and slow speech, this technique makes for a powerful presentation.

A conversation is more powerful than a presentation where you’re just talking at the audience. It makes people feel involved and they’ll remember it better. To achieve this, you need to incorporate elements that invite audience interaction and create a dialogue rather than a monologue. You can do this when you start a presentation by using an engaging hook to capture your audience’s attention.

Another good way is to ask questions that make people think or let the audience ask questions . This will break up the monotony and encourage the audience to think actively about the topic. For example, if discussing branding strategies, you could ask the audience about their experiences with different brands or conduct a quick poll to gauge opinions on current trends.

You should also actively seek input from different segments of your audience . For instance, a marketing director could enhance their presentation on branding strategies by inviting insights from various departments. This will enrich the content with diverse perspectives and make the audience feel valued and involved.

Collaborating with another person can help you refine both the content and delivery of your presentation. A friend or coworker can give new ideas and point out things to improve that you might not have noticed on your own.

It’s also particularly helpful for non-native speakers, as it allows them to fine-tune pronunciation and vocabulary . This practice can ensure your message is clear and accessible to all audience members.

When you rehearse in front of someone else, you open yourself up to constructive feedback on various aspects of your presentation, from the structure of your content to the nuances of your body language. This feedback is crucial for identifying any confusing elements or jargon that might alienate your audience.

To make the most of this practice session, pick someone who can give different opinions, maybe someone who doesn’t know much about the topic . They can give you a better sense of how your presentation will be received by a broader audience.

Encourage your practice partner to be honest and detailed in their feedback . This will help boost your confidence so you feel well-prepared to engage your audience successfully.

When your presentation matches your company’s brand, it strengthens your message.

Imagine a sales representative pitching to potential clients. By using branded templates, colors, and fonts, they do more than simply present a product or a service; they embody the company’s identity. This consistency in visual elements ensures that every slide reflects the brand’s character, creating a seamless and professional experience for the audience. It’s not just about looking good – it’s about creating a sense of trust and authority.

To achieve this, familiarize yourself with your company’s presentation design guidelines. Use the company’s templates, fonts, and colors in your presentation. If you’re including visuals or graphics, make sure they resonate with the brand’s aesthetic.

Delivering a presentation

This week, you’re going to build and deliver a presentation to your peers, and receive feedback from them. You will create a presentation of about 10 slides, employing the guidelines and industry best practices that have been discussed in this course. You can use the presentation storyboard that you created last week, which your peers have reviewed and given you feedback on. Review what you’ve developed so far, and make changes or additions that you think will enhance the presentation. Once you’ve finalized your presentation, you will present it in a video using your smartphone or computer. Once you’re satisfied with the PowerPoint presentation and video, you will be submitting both for peer review. You can use this feedback for current and future presentations that you will make during your career.

Genially in a nutshell

How do I make a presentation interactive and how does Genially work? Find the answers to all of your slide-related questions here!

What’s an interactive presentation?

Interactive slides contain clickable hotspots, links, buttons, and animations that are activated at the touch of a button. Instead of reading or watching passively, your audience can actively interact with the content.

Genially’s interaction presentation software allows you to combine text, photos, video clips, audio and other content in one deck. It’s a great way to condense more information into fewer slides.

If you’re a teacher, you can share multiple materials in one single learning resource. Students can create their own projects using digital media and online maps. For business or training, try embedding spreadsheet data, PDFs, and online content directly in your slides.

An interactive slide deck is more user-friendly than a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or Google Slides document. That’s because you can break information down into chunks with pop-ups, labels, voiceovers and annotated infographics.

The other benefit of interactive content is increased engagement. It’s easier to keep your audience’s attention when they’re actively participating. Try Genially’s presentation software and free slideshow maker to see how it’s better than other presentation websites. You won’t go back to standard presentation apps!

How do you make a clickable slide?

The best way to make slides clickable is to use Genially’s free interactive presentation program. Design your slide then apply an interaction. In a couple of clicks, you can add popup windows, hyperlinks, close-up images, games, animations, multimedia and other content.

Choose from the library of hotspot buttons and icons to show people what to click on. Go to Presenter View to get a preview and see how your content will appear to your audience.

How do I create presentations that look professional?

You’ve got a deadline looming and you’re staring at the screen with a blank presentation. We’ve all been there! Starting a presentation design from scratch is tricky, especially if you’re short on time.

Genially’s free online presentation maker has over 2000 ready-to-use templates for professional slide presentations, photos slideshows, and more. Each slide design has been created by our team of top graphic designers. No need to worry about fonts, centering images, or designing a matching color scheme. It’s all done for you.

Start by browsing our layouts and themes for education, business and then customize with your own text and images.

How do I share or download my slides?

Because Genially is a cloud based presentation software, you can simply share the link to your slides. Like other online presentation tools, there are no files to download or store on your computer. Everything is saved online.

When you publish your slide deck, it gets its own unique url, just like a website. Share the link with others to let them explore the content in their own time. If you’re presenting live, just click the Present button.

You can also embed your presentation on your website, company wiki, or social media. Genially is compatible with WordPress, Moodle, Google Classroom, and other platforms. If you use an LMS, you can also download your interactive design slides in SCORM format.

For slideshow videos and slideshows with music, share online or download as an MP4 video. Check out our free slideshow templates for ideas.

Can I make a free presentation in Genially?

You bet! Genially is an easy-to-use slide maker, with a free version and paid plans. The free plan allows you to create unlimited slides with interactions and animations. Subscribe to one of our paid plans for more advanced features.

Microsoft 365 Life Hacks > Presentations > 7 tips for creating and presenting a webinar

7 tips for creating and presenting a webinar

Creating a webinar presentation requires a blend of technical and content creation skills. A well-crafted webinar should educate your audience and keep them engaged throughout your presentation’s runtime.

A crowd listening to a man speak

If you’re nervous about an upcoming webinar presentation or just looking to hone your craft, use these seven tips to create a webinar that captivates and communicates effectively.

1. Plan your content meticulously

The foundation of a good webinar presentation lies in its planning. Start by defining the purpose of your webinar and thinking about your target audience . What key message do you want your audience to take away from your presentation? Once you have a clear objective, outline your content to build a coherent narrative. Ensure that each slide progresses logically to help your audience understand and retain the information. Here’s how to get started on the content planning phase:

  • Identify your main message.
  • Outline the structure.
  • Create engaging and relevant content.

Powerpoint empowers you to develop well-designed content across all your devices

2. Design for clarity and engagement

Visuals play an important role in webinar presentations. Use high-quality graphics, readable fonts, and a cohesive color scheme to make your slides aesthetically pleasing and easy to digest. Interactive elements like polls, quizzes, and question-and-answer sessions can also enhance engagement and make your webinar more interactive. Design an engaging webinar with these tips:

  • Use clear, concise visuals.
  • Incorporate multimedia elements.
  • Engage with interactive tools.

3. Master the technical aspects

Technical glitches can disrupt even the best webinar presentation. Before you present the real deal, rehearse your webinar to get comfortable with the tools and platform you’ll be using beforehand. Have a backup plan for technical failures to maintain professionalism should anything go wrong. Follow these tips to master the technical aspects of your webinar:

  • Test your equipment.
  • Rehearse using the webinar platform.
  • Prepare for technical issues.

4. Deliver with confidence and clarity

Learning how to give a webinar involves finding the correct speaking voice and cadence for your presentation. Nail your webinar delivery with these tips:

  • Practice your speech.
  • Use pauses effectively.
  • Pay attention to your inflection and tone.

5. Engage your audience throughout

To keep your audience interested, interact with them throughout the webinar. Ask questions, encourage participants to chat, and address comments or questions as they arise. This interaction not only makes the session livelier but also helps gauge audience understanding and interest. Promote audience participation during your webinar with these tips:

  • Encourage questions.
  • Use live polls.
  • Address audience feedback directly.

6. Follow up after the webinar

The end of your webinar shouldn’t be the end of your engagement. Follow up with attendees via email with a thank you note, additional resources, or a survey to collect feedback. Here are some different ways you can follow up with your audience:

  • Send thank you emails.
  • Provide additional materials.
  • Collect feedback through surveys.

7. Continuously improve

Use the feedback you received and your own observations to improve the way you deliver future webinars. Use these tips to refine your webinars going forward:

  • Review feedback.
  • Adjust content and delivery.
  • Practice continuously.

By following these guidelines, you can create a webinar presentation that not only delivers your message effectively but also keeps your audience engaged and responsive. Think of each webinar as an opportunity to improve your skills and c onnect with your audience over a shared interest and you’ll make a lasting impression.

Calculating the Slide Count: How Many Slides Do I Need for a Presentation?

Cover for How Many Slides Do I Need for a Presentation guide by SlideModel

Have you ever wondered how many slides you need for a presentation? Perhaps you’ve been in a situation where you felt the slides were too many or too few for the time given. Who sets the standard for the number of slides per minute?

Thankfully for you, we’ve included some calculations based on our expertise in the presentation industry. This article includes an interactive calculator and suggestions for how many minutes per PowerPoint slide, content to list for such situations, etc.

Table of Contents

Slide Calculator

Rules for choosing your ppt slides, typical presentation length in minutes by topic, how many slides for a 3-minute presentation, how many slides for a 5-minute presentation, how many slides for a 7-minute presentation, how many slides for a 10-minute presentation, how many slides for a 15-minute presentation, how many slides for a 20-minute presentation.

  • How Many Slides for a 25-Minute Presentation?

How Many Slides for a 30-Minute Presentation?

How many slides for a 45-minute presentation, how many slides for a 60-minute presentation, final words.

We crafted this easy-access calculator tool to simplify the experience of choosing how many slides your presentation should contain. Please consider that the total count is entirely subjective; for some presenters, the slide count may feel too restrictive, whereas it can be a relaxed approach for others. As a general guideline, don’t overdo 30% of the total count suggested by this calculator.

How many slides?

One Topic per Slide

We cannot stress enough the importance of not over-populating your PPT slides. Presenters feel the need to compact their presentation into as few slides as possible, which compromises their readability, especially if we talk about a data presentation .

One topic per slide only; if you are required 2-3 slides over your planned limit for easier comprehension, go for it.

Choose Quality Over Quantity

Building a huge slide deck is not the answer. Concise presentations like elevator pitches are identifiable for the maximum impact-driven in a short selection of slides, where data is precise, and where the key points for the presentation are highlighted through correct visual communication , allowing the presenter to focus on the speech.

Importance of data visualization in presentations

Work with presentation templates that customize the layout and contain visual cues to make relevant points stand out.

On Font Sizing and Graphs

The 10/20/30 Rule of Presentations by Guy Kawasaki is a valid approach to presentation design as it specifies a minimum size of 30 pt for titles in presentations. Taking this method, in our experience, secondary text should be between 18-24 pt, depending on the amount of text to add, but no less than that.

Graphs should occupy 1/3 of the slide layout for easier visibility. Remember to work with legible legend text and bold colors. If you have to work with multiple graphs, opt for one or two graphs per slide top (two graphs in case you are comparing variables/scenarios and don’t want to go back and forth with the slides).

The typical length of a presentation can vary depending on the context and purpose of the presentation. Here are some common presentation lengths for different scenarios:

Business Presentations

  • Team Meetings: 10-20 minutes
  • Project Updates: 15-30 minutes
  • Sales Pitches: 20-30 minutes
  • Client Presentations: 30-60 minutes

Academic Presentations

  • Classroom Lectures: 45-90 minutes
  • Conference Talks: 15-30 minutes
  • Thesis Defense: 45-60 minutes

Public Speaking and Events

  • Keynote Speeches: 30-60 minutes
  • Workshops: 60-120 minutes (including interactive elements)
  • TED Talks: 18 minutes

Webinars and Online Presentations

  • Webinars: 45-60 minutes
  • Online Workshops: 60-120 minutes

Elevator Pitches

  • Elevator Pitch: 1-2 minutes

Being a super-concise format, the 3-minute presentation can be done in 2-3 slides. Ideally, one slide showcasing the context of your problem, the second slide offering a solution, and optionally a CTA slide to conclude the presentation – although the call-to-action can be added to the second slide.

Applying our calculator, the ideal number of slides for a 5-minute presentation is between 3 and 4, which you can expand to 5 slides if you have multiple graphs to introduce. Check our article for further information on how to create and deliver a professional-quality 5-minute presentation .

When working with a 7-minute presentation, the typical length is 4-7 slides, ideally 5. You need to include two slides for the core main ideas, with one slide reserved for the summary of key points. If we add the title slide to the mix, that gives us a minimum of four slides.

Ten-minute presentations are the average length for project update presentations or in-team meetings. However, this format is not commonly used for academic presentations, which require a minimum of 15-20 minutes to present a case properly. Consider a length of between 7 and 9 slides for 10-minute presentations.

Example of a product demo presentation slide

Depending on whether you are approaching a product presentation , a sales presentation requires the title slide, an introduction slide with the background or context for the presentation, the main content, and a call-to-action slide. The main content can be arranged in 3-5 slides, giving an overview of the value offering, strategy, and implementation plan ( roadmap , timeline , etc.)

15-minute presentations are ideal for conveying more in-depth topics, like introducing case studies for marketing research or academic presentations. In terms of slide count, consider a minimum of 10 slides, as going below that count implies remaining over 2 minutes per slide and a maximum of 15 slides.

Academic presentations can follow the same approach regarding the number of slides as long as three slides are present: background, methodology, and conclusion. However, 15 minutes is the minimum length acceptable for a conference talk as presenters feel too rushed to disclose the information that backs up their research process. Still, the poster session is a fine example of how to deliver an academic presentation in a concise time allocation.

Presentations that last 20 minutes are the common ground of business meetings, as we allow for questions and answers , to demonstrate live features in a product as in a demo presentation, or to define strategic planning for team meetings. In terms of length, the 20-minute presentation has to cover at least these slides:

  • Title + Introduction
  • Context (2-3 slides): Where you bring all the data to present the problem.
  • Body (5-7 slides): Where you introduce your research, tools, or strategy to tackle the issue.
  • Proposal: One or two slides where you deliver a response based on your presented findings.
  • Conclusion (1-2 slides): Aim to include a powerful call-to-action and the Q&A session introduction.

Slide highlighting a company's team achievements by department

Therefore, it makes a minimum of 12 slides, and you can go all the way up to 20 to complete your presentation. One particular format that stands out in this time block is the TEDx Talks, which typically last 18 minutes. TED Talks have very much in common with video presentations , where audience engagement is key, so the total count of slides is not considered by minutes but rather by how presenters structure their storylines .

The 30-minute presentation format is commonly used in training presentations , as it allows presenters to structure lessons to cover theory and one practical example in multiple lesson formats rather than lengthy webinar sessions. Depending on the platform to use, if handouts are delivered as part of the study material, and if videos are included, we can define the actual count of slides to work with.

In this type of long-presentation format, it’s best to stick to a maximum of 25 slides and use multimedia elements to boost audience engagement. Otherwise, the format can be dense and tiresome in terms of content retention.

The average length of live events and webinars is 45 minutes, as they can condense a 30-minute presentation format, end with a powerful call-to-action or testimonial, and include a five to ten-minute Q&A session.

If the presenter opts to do a live course event format, then a minimum of 10 slides must be included aside from the main screen-sharing event. In the case of recorded interviews, structure the slide deck so you can count an equal number of slides before and after the interview. By doing so, the presentation is not perceived as streaming an interview but as a multi-resource event featuring an interview.

Finally, the 60-minute presentation format is strictly academic or educational. It’s seen in thesis defense sessions, where the candidates must explain their research in detail and often provide live demonstrations. In business settings, the 60-minute presentation format is reserved for workshops, which may include a concise slide deck of 25 slides at the top and, most of the time, covered in live-time exercises or mentoring.

There’s no golden rule for defining the number of slides per minute, as the presentation delivery experience depends on both presentation skills and the niche. With this guide, we intend to provide some general guidelines that can help you consider an estimated count, but once again, it shouldn’t restrict your own creativity. Always consider that in presentation design, less is more. Don’t go overboard with slides to add content, as the same concepts can be explained in your speech.

The most avid travel hackers often shoot me a skeptical glare when I utter the words “ timeshare presentation ” as a way to get discounted hotel stays and piles of points to use toward future travel.

The deal is pretty simple: receive a heavily discounted hotel or resort stay and other perks in exchange for attending a timeshare presentation — better known as a sales pitch.

The last email offer I received was in March 2023 from Hilton Grand Vacations. It dangled a three-night stay in Las Vegas plus 50,000 Hilton Honors points in exchange for $149 and sitting through a 90-minute talk.

Having attended four timeshare presentations over the last decade, I find that the discounted hotel stay and extra perks — like hotel points and discounted spa treatments or amusement park tickets — are worth my time. All you have to do is attend the presentation and say “no” (sometimes several times) if the timeshare is not right for you.

Here’s how to get nearly free vacations with timeshare presentations.

Determine the value of the promotion, then negotiate

I've successfully negotiated the terms of a timeshare presentation in the past, so I called Hilton to see if it could sweeten the deal with upgrades like more travel rewards points or food and beverage credits.

After reviewing the terms of my promotion — and with some very polite back and forth — I requested an increase to 100,000 points and a waiver on the additional resort fees of $34 per night. After a long wait, the sales representative’s supervisor approved the deal if I accepted it on the spot, which I did.

According to NerdWallet’s valuation , Hilton points are generally worth about 0.5 cent each , giving the 100,000 points an approximate value of $500. The nightly room rate over my travel dates was $249, plus $34 per night in resort fees. That gives this deal a value of over $1,300 in exchange for 90-minutes of my time and the $149 I paid for the package.

Understand the restrictions and limitations

Certain hotels require attending the presentation with a spouse, while others may have specific income requirements. Ask about blackout dates, package expiration dates and any other hidden fees (like those pesky resort fees).

For Hilton, I had to verbally confirm my income was above a certain threshold and attest that I hadn’t participated in another Hilton-based timeshare presentation over the past six months.

Once I purchased the package, Hilton gave me 12 months to use it. After my reservation in Las Vegas was booked, Hilton assigned a set date and time for the timeshare presentation. If you miss it, the company can charge the full cash rate for the stay and revoke any perks offered.

Also be aware that you won't earn hotel points or elite night credits with the host brand for the promotional stay.

Know what to expect at the sales pitch

The pitch usually starts with an introduction to your salesperson and a general video or presentation about the company’s timeshare program. You’ll then be whisked away to an office, where the salesperson asks about your finances and travel habits. You’ll be introduced to a rubric of costs to stay at different tiers of properties — costs that may fluctuate seasonally or during periods of high demand.

Many timeshare companies, even Disney , have transitioned to a points-based system, where you buy points used to make reservations after you’re an “owner,” but be aware these points are independent of the chain’s loyalty program.

Once the salesperson estimates the cost required to live your best timeshare life, they’ll take you on a tour of a model property. You’ll then return to the office and be introduced to the “closer” — the person who ran the numbers and tries to pressure you into signing.

The sales professionals will tug at your emotions with aspirational travel fantasies while making you feel like family. Remember, they are incentivized by commissions to make you buy a timeshare through signing a contract that can last the rest of your life.

Timing the pitch using my phone allowed me to politely tell the salesperson their time was up once the required duration under the promotion elapsed (usually 90 to 120 minutes).

Be in the 'no'

Timeshares are big business, with $10.6 billion in domestic sales in 2023, according to a 2024 study by the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), a trade association for the timeshare industry. For comparison, that’s similar to the annual revenue of Major League Baseball in 2023.

Hospitality companies wouldn’t offer these lucrative promotions unless enough people were buying what they’re selling.

Jason Gamel, president and CEO of ARDA, says that approximately 2 in 10 people decide to buy after a sales presentation. And that purchase, of course, comes with a financial commitment. The average purchase transaction was $24,170 in 2023, according to the ARDA study, with average annual interest rates near 15%.

This amount covers the initial cost to join the timeshare and the financing of the balance but does not include ongoing costs such as membership dues, maintenance fees or other required resort operation expenses.

If you’re not in the market for a timeshare, no sales pitch should persuade you to get one. Before the pitch, think (or talk) through the process of saying “no,” and if you have a spouse who'll be attending, include them in the conversation.

Later, if you change your mind and decide to sign a contract, a state’s rescission laws could allow the contract to be canceled within a certain window after signing — usually between five and 10 business days.

“I think that’s important because it does help people evaluate whether they’re making the right decision for them, and it gives them a very easy way to say no after everything is said and done," says Gamel.

Simply pack up and go

Despite skepticism from my travel-hacking cohorts, timeshare promotions allow me to save money on travel now and earn rewards to use for free travel in the future. The process won’t be for everyone, but if you’re willing to sacrifice a couple of hours and know the power of saying “no,” it could do the same for you.
