These particular stories are a bit more in-depth, packed with literary lightning that will fuel hearty discussions.

Intermediate Short Stories to Harness ESL Discussions

1. “confido” by kurt vonnegut, 2. “the long rain” by ray bradbury, 3. “araby” by james joyce, 4. “crazy sunday” by f. scott fitzgerald, 5. “the masque of the red death” by edgar allan poe, why use short stories with intermediate esl students.

What it’s about: “Confido” features a lab assistant named Henry who invented Confido, a magical device that exposes people’s inner thoughts. Henry knew his invention would make him and his family wealthy, but the device also brought about the prospect of despair. Vonnegut’s “Confido” is about greed and the true needs of people, a subject perfect for discussion and debate.

How to use in class: A debate-minded lesson plan for this short story will focus on the greed and moral aspects. This is excellent for pair discussion, allowing your students to really draw out the content in the story from one another. Have one student support Henry’s decision to bury Confido, while the other is against it. Employ a few “for” and “against” questions to spark debate once your class has read and/or listened to the short story.

Possible questions:

  • If you had a device like Confido, would you bury it like Henry did?
  • What would be the reasons behind your decision to bury or keep the device?
  • How could Confido be important to the world?
  • How could Confido destroy the world?
  • Is a life of being poor worth never introducing Confido to the public?
  • Is having all the money in the world worth exposing Confido to the world?

Activity suggestions: Give each pair time to process the questions surrounding the short story. They can also write down a few notes important to their debate points. You can let each pair debate their points at their desks, or bring the debate to the center, allowing each pair to debate in front of the class to build more confidence.

What it’s about: “The Long Rain” by Ray Bradbury is often a favorite of science-fiction buffs. The story portrays four men deserted on the planet Venus. Bradbury depicts Venus as a planet with endless rain, though, which in turn drives the four men mad as they search desperately for shelter. One of the four men, the lieutenant, survives the endless rain of Venus by finding shelter.

How to use in class: The story ending has a speculative aspect that you could transform into a lively classroom discussion. Is the lieutenant’s shelter a delusion, or is it real? You can also open up classroom discussion regarding the deaths of the other three men in the story.

  • Is there a metaphor behind Bradbury’s story?
  • What could the endless rain of Venus really represent?
  • What does the lightning strike represent? Should the man have run? Should he have jumped?
  • What is a mercy kill? Is it murder?
  • In your opinion, is there such a thing as a moral mercy kill? What would you have done in a similar situation?
  • How does Simmons’s life end? Is suicide a metaphor for anything within the story?
  • What do you think about suicide?
  • How do you know if the lieutenant has truly reached safe haven? Could it be a delusion?
  • What is a delusion?

Activity suggestions: You can expand on insights as they come to light during the discussion. Your students will sharpen their ability to think and process English quickly as the discussion unfolds.

What it’s about: This short story by famed literary great James Joyce is indeed short, yet descriptive and full of exceptional metaphors for your students to analyze and discuss. It is about a young boy who is infatuated with a young girl, leading him to the promise of a gift, which is never purchased. The boy’s unrelenting vanity is later revealed as the boy’s obsession with the girl is represented by the promise of a gift.

How to use in class: In true Joyce fashion, the descriptive nature of the short story is an exceptional tool you can use in your lesson plan. For this activity, you will need to develop a short worksheet intended to kick off discussion among your student pairs. If developing and printing a worksheet is challenging, you can also read the questions aloud, letting your students dictate and hone their listening comprehension.

  • The short story ends with, “Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger.” What does vanity represent in this final sentence?
  • How do you perceive vanity in your culture?
  • Do you find that material objects represent more in your life or in the lives of your family, friends or colleagues?
  • Joyce uses many descriptive passages to convey the feel of a room, a character in the story or a specific place unique to the story. Is this helpful to you when reading or listening?
  • Using very descriptive passages, how would you describe the classroom?
  • How would you describe your home or office?

Activity suggestions: Your student pairs can build discussion as they address each question. They will discover fresh ways to describe things in their everyday life, which may increase their use of adjectives, and also develop a new use for vocabulary words presented in past English lessons.

What it’s about: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Crazy Sunday” is about love, dishonor and the twists and turns associated with the many relationships people have in daily life. The main character Joel Cole falls in love with his friend Stella, who has been cheated on by her husband. However, upon the death of Stella’s husband, she realizes she truly loved him and Joel may not be a love at all, but a passing fling to hold on to.

How to use in class: In Section V of the story, the death of Stella’s husband comes to light and Joel is left to assist Stella in such a traumatic moment in her life. The vocabulary within the paragraphs and dialogue of Section V can develop a creative discussion and writing activity beneficial to your intermediate students.

You will need to identify several new vocabulary words for your students to develop definitions for, which will be used later in the group activity. Below you’ll find some suggestions.

Possible vocabulary:

  • hanging about
  • unrolled before him
  • innumerable
  • temperament
  • get a hold of

Activity suggestions: Once you have compiled a list of 20 or more vocabulary words, have each group search the story for each word to know its context, and then develop a definition. Let students refer to a dictionary if needed. After they have collaborated on their vocabulary definitions, have each group begin to develop a new dialogue—with Joel and Stella as the main characters.

The dialogues should be short, and will act as a replacement to the story’s original ending. However, each group will eventually need to enact their dialogues in front of the class and explain why they chose the ending they did. This activity encompasses core discussion and collaboration skills with writing and reading as sub-skills.

What it’s about: Our final short story follows the main character Prince Prospero as he attempts to stay healthy during a plague. Prospero escapes to his abbey, along with many other wealthy figures. They have a party, in which “red death,” an unknown guest, appears and kills Prospero, along with all the members of the party. Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” is thought to have a metaphorical meaning, which surrounds the inevitability of death, regardless of power or wealth.

How to use in class: The notion of death, the wealthy and the powerful are perfect discussion points for your intermediate students to explore. You can use this story to dive deeper into the aspects of the content as it pertains to the metaphorical passages within it.

  • “The ‘Red Death’ had long devastated the country.” What does the “Red Death” represent in Poe’s story? Is it human, or could it be evil?
  • “A strong and lofty wall girdled it in.” What is this passage referring to? What does this passage represent to the characters and you the reader?
  • What color is represented in the seven rooms of the Prince’s home?
  • Why do you think there were no red rooms?
  • “It was in this apartment, also, that there stood against the western wall, a gigantic clock of ebony.” Where was this clock of ebony? What does the clock represent in the story? How is the clock significant to the story?

Activity suggestions: Your students will enjoy piecing together the hidden meanings within Poe’s words as they discuss the what and whys you present as challenges within your questions. Students may even find it useful to examine each line of the short story for hidden meanings and new vocabulary words as well.

The days of “Little Red Riding Hood” have long passed, and your students are ready for short stories crafted by some of history’s most prolific writers.

  • When you increase your students’ literature levels, the vital vocabulary will follow. Your students will journey down a beautifully worded path of fresh adjectives, nouns and verbs, as well as idioms, phrasal verbs and slang too.
  • These short stories will also introduce your students to authors that remain discussed in universities and at coffee tables around the world. They will build confidence from these intermediate-level short stories. Once your students are familiar with a particular author, attempting one of their full-length novels becomes much more doable.
  • The themes and topics from these stories lend themselves nicely to a variety of classroom activities . With challenge comes discussion , the cornerstone to intermediate lesson plans.

To tackle short stories in class, set up group or pair activities, highlight debate topics within the story, or open up the classroom for group discussion as well. For example, in “Confido” by Kurt Vonnegut, greed and morals are pinned against one another, which can stimulate a debate or opinionated discussion for your students.

If you’re after even more content to help connect your student to the native English world, you can supplement with English videos from FluentU . These cover diverse themes, from literature to travel, and they all come with study tools like quizzes and interactive subtitles.  With these materials, you’ll be able to showcase even more of the creative English history and encourage your students to discuss a full range of exciting topics.

Let the literary masters of history come to life within your ESL classroom by developing discussion-based lesson plans around short stories. Beyond the five listed here, there is a wealth of short stories available online to draw from. You can easily transform delightful short stories into activities your eager intermediate English students will enjoy and learn from.

Let them unlock new ways to express themselves, explore literature, debate and share their opinions with others through short stories. Your students will undoubtedly obtain the ESL discussion skills vital for communicating in real-life situations.

A Selection of Our Best Short Stories in English: Level A1-A2-B1-B2

OUR BEST SHORT STORIES IN ENGLISH

Learn English With Africa Books Thandi Ngwira Gatignol April 2023

Hello and welcome!

Do you remember the first short story you ever read in your life? What was it like? Did you like it?

As for me, I cannot pinpoint a particular short story. All I remember is that my late mother used to bring us Greek mythology stories.

In fact, she worked as a secretary at the Polytechnic College in Malawi. Therefore, she had access to the university’s library, so she would get books for us every Friday.

I am forever grateful to her because she introduced me to one of my passions, which is reading and writing stories!

Later on, I would read my first novel “ Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë at the age of 9. It was such a wonderful and enriching experience.

It was not rare for me to spend days cooped up in my bedroom, exploring other worlds and, unknowingly, improving my level of English at the same time.

I published my first short story in a local newspaper when I was 12. I knew right then that I would choose a writing career when I grew up.

So far, I have self-published 7 books, one of which is a novel .

On top of that, I have also written several short stories in beginner , intermediate and advanced levels on this website.

Today, you will discover some of our most read short stories.

The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42.

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Reading is a not-so-secret educational weapon:

  • Reading stimulates a number of different areas of the brain, engaging the mind and improving focus and concentration.
  • Reading broadens your horizons by exposing you to different opinions and ways of life.
  • Reading promotes emotional and mental wellbeing, by reducing stress.
  • Students who read regularly have better comprehension skills, verbal fluency and general knowledge than those who don’t.

And it’s enjoyable! Winning all round.

How can reading improve language learning?

When it comes to learning a foreign language, reading is especially beneficial for learners.

Reading helps improve vocabulary and grammar. It exposes the reader to natural, authentic language. Foreign language learners who read books become more fluent more quickly even if they have had the same amount of lessons as non-readers.

How can we incorporate reading into our lessons?

One way to incorporate more English into our learners’ free time is to introduce them to English books they will enjoy reading. In this way, they will hopefully not look at reading as studying but will be so engrossed in the story that they will forget they are learning.

Of course, there are millions of English novels out there! Finding the right one can take some time. It’s really important that your students choose novels that are appropriate for them, both in terms of their interests and their English level.

If a book is too difficult or too easy, they may lose motivation. If the book is boring, they will lose interest.

To help you out, here we have some of our favourite English novels for Intermediate learners – suitable for older teens or adult learners.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

by Mark Haddon

An original and unpredictable story of a boy’s quest to solve the mystery of a dog’s death.

Christopher is a young boy with autism. When he discovers his neighbour’s dog is dead, he embarks on an investigation to find out who did it.

Written in plain, simple English with a matter-of-fact attitude, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Tuesdays with Morrie

by Mitch Albom

An easy-to-read book with a deeper meaning.

Tuesdays with Morrie tells the story of Mitch, who reconnects with his college professor towards the end of his life. He shares with Mitch the wisdom and advice he has collected throughout his life.

Written in an easy-to-read, conversational style, it might be a book about death but it is also a book about life, heart-warming and humorous.

The Fault in Our Stars

By john green.

Also a movie (which always helps) this book tells the heartbreaking story of two terminally ill teenagers who fall in love.

Written from the perspective of 14-year-old Hazel, it follows the blossoming romance between herself and Augustus. Both Hazel and Augustus have terminal cancer.

It’s an emotional story to say the least. Quirky and funny, it is sure to tug on your heartstrings.

by Lois Lowry

A novel very popular with young adults,  The Giver  is a fantasy story about a young boy and the society he lives in.

This society does not believe in freedom, individuality or choice. When he is given special powers, he realises life might not be as perfect as he has always thought.

With short sentences and simple grammar, this book is an exciting read from page one.

The Old Man and the Sea

by Ernest Hemingway

An English-language classic, this novel is written in simple language, but the story is much deeper than it seems.

The story of a Cuban fisherman and a giant fish (a marlin, to be precise) it’s an exploration of the themes of challenge, courage, survival, defeat and triumph.

Book tips for Intermediate English Learners

Introduction

Every book or author in my list of 10 fits the list of criteria I have for reading books in foreign languages when I’m at an intermediate level. If you’re lost in the search to find something to read, hopefully this guideline will help you narrow your search!

My Guideline for Choosing Books

I take 3 things into consideration when I’m picking books in a foreign language.

#1. Genre, reviews and recommendations

I choose books I’ve already read (for comprehension), books recommended by other language learners OR books found on GoodReads above 4.0 stars in the 4th-6th grade level (10-12 year olds) .

Apart from novels written for 10-12 year olds, I look for non-fiction books written in the first person (to improve the way I talk and think about myself and my life), novels by authors who write simplistically (ex. Paulo Coelho) or crime books (to improve conversational ability).

#2. Extensive Reading: Look up max. 4-5 words per page or fewer

When I’m in a bookstore and want to know if a book is a good choice, I flip to the middle of the book, read one page and count the number of words I don’t know. If I need to look up more than the 4-5 words to understand the context, reading is not fun, it’s work. Being able to immerse oneself in a story can improve the learning experience. Flow = Fun = Learning. Intensive reading should be left for articles.

#3 Limit the Length of the Book to 250 pages

Everytime I finish a chapter in a foreign language a great sense of accomplishment sweeps over me. Unfortunately, if a book is very long, the likelihood of finishing it decreases due to lack of time, loss of interest, etc.

As a result, I feel bad about myself. I don’t risk it; I normally choose books under 250 pages.

Without any further ado, here are my top 10 recommendations.

My Top 10 Recommendations

short story books for intermediate level

#1: Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist / The Pilgrimage / 11 Minutes

Paulo Coelho’s books are easy reads. Although not originally written in English, they were translated exceptionally well. I read his books in German, French, Spanish and Portuguese while at an intermediate level and they’ll give you the sensation you’re fluent, even when you aren’t. Get ready to go on a philosophical adventure!

short story books for intermediate level

#2: Elizabeth Gilbert

Eat Pray Love / Big Magic / Committed

Gilbert writes in a very natural way, talking about everyday life and situations in the first person. This style of writing can help you express yourself in everyday life or even start your own journal in English!

You’ll notice that travel journals are often written in a similar fashion!

short story books for intermediate level

#3: Roald Dahl

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , Matilda and James and the Giant Peach

All of Roald Dahls’ stories are imaginative, fun and engaging. The books above helped my reading ability drastically when I was at an basic-intermediate level in Spanish. Vocabulary inside is useful for everyday life.

short story books for intermediate level

#4: C.S. Lewis

The Chronicles of Narnia ( The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe , Prince Caspian , etc.)

The Chronicles of Narnia are great although I must admit a little bit more difficult to understand than Roald Dahl due to the fantastical vocabulary. The key is that they are page-turners – you won’t be able to put them down! You might even forget you’re reading in English.

short story books for intermediate level

#5: Lois Lowry

The Giver , Number the Stars

Great books. The Giver was my favorite book when I was in 5th grade and sparked a love of reading in me. Number the Stars was the favorite of many of my friends. These are great for ANY age level.

short story books for intermediate level

#6: Sue Monk Kidd

The Secret Life of Bees

I read this book in 5th grade and really liked it. Apart from great character development, it reflects on relationships between women and race in the South during the 1950s.

short story books for intermediate level

#7.  Malcom Gladwell

Outliers , Blink , The Tipping Point

Malcom Gladwell is a journalist who packs his books with stories and interesting perspectives on life. A few of my students have read his books and found them interesting and understandable.

Other journalistic works: Tim Ferris Books, 4-hour work week, Lean Start-up etc.

short story books for intermediate level

#8 – Katherine Paterson

The Bridge to Terabithia

Many kids liked this series at school. It’s well written and can be read at any age level and enjoyed from my opinion. Afterwards, consider watching the movie in English to repeat vocabulary (on Netflix).

short story books for intermediate level

#9. Ruth White

Bell Prater’s Boy

Hard to say why I remember this story so well, I read it when I was 11! The unique storyline and thoughts of the narrator made it an unforgettable read.

short story books for intermediate level

#10: Christopher Paul Curtis

The Watsons Go To Birmingham

"When the Watson family—ten-year-old Kenny, Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron—sets out on a trip south to visit Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama, they don’t realize that they’re heading toward one of the darkest moments in America’s history. The Watsons’ journey reminds us that even in the hardest times, laughter and family can help us get through anything."

Recommendations from my friends:

I asked my friends what their favorite books were when they read from 10-12 years old. Here is what they recommended:

  • Adventure: The Phantom Tollbooth , Harry Potter
  • Modern: Diary of a Wimpy Kid , Freak the Mighty , Dork Diaries , The Hunger Games , Twilight. DC Supergirls, The Amulet Series
  • Mystery: Nancy Drew Mysteries , Goosebumps, The Hardy Boys
  • Classics: Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Diary of Anne Frank, Around the World in 80 Days, Anne of Green Gables, Number the Stars, Swiss Family Robinson and The Secret Garden, Where the Red Fern Grows , The Cay, The Hatchet, Call it Courage.

Others: Holes , Brian’s Winter , Harris and Me , Redwall Series , The Golden Compass Series, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, The Ramona Series, James Patterson’s Middle School series.

Learn A Language Through Stories

best books for english learners

The 11 Best Books For English Learners

Olly Richards Headshot

One of the best and most effective ways to learn and improve your English is to read books.

Well, reading books exposes you to a lot of language in context so you can reinforce your grammar, sentence structure and even spelling.

You might learn new words and review those that you already know because you see them “at work” in a text.

Reading improves your writing too. Stephen King said this too. In “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” he wrote, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

But how can you know if a book is good for your current level of English? And with so many books in English to choose from, how can you pick the best ones for yourself?

No need to panic, I've created this list of the 11 best books for English learners for you.

Best Books For English Learners: How To Choose Books For Your Level

Reading books at your level is one of the most crucial rules of StoryLearning .

A way to discover if a book is too easy or too difficult for you is to follow the 5-finger rule.

Have you ever heard of this? It’s very simple. Have a look:

short story books for intermediate level

Easy, right? Choose a book, open it and see how many new words there are. Then decide what to do with the book.

Another way to choose a book to do a simple test: every time you’re not sure if the book is good for you, you can ask yourself if you would read it in your first language or not.

If you think you would, then it means that you’re interested in it. If not, then you’re probably not interested in the topic so you might want to put it down and find another one.

Here’s a suggested selection of 11 best books for English learners. These books are graded readers, so they're designed for learners of English.

Let’s see if you’re interested in any of these.

1. “1984” by George Orwell (Pearson English Graded Readers)

short story books for intermediate level

This book is a classic. The story takes place in a world where people cannot do or say what they want.

They have to listen to Big Brother, the leader of the government, and follow his rules.

This is a book that warns us about the danger of a government that has too much power and control over people's lives.

It’s a level 4 on the Pearson English Graded Readers scale and you can check it out here .

2. “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley (Oxford Bookworms Library)

The monster is like a giant baby that wants love and affection, but no one loves him. So he begins to feel angry and, since he is very strong, he learns to hurt and kill others.

You can get the book here .
