You need to captivate your audience, maintain their interest, and guide them effortlessly through your narrative.

But how do you transform a heap of information into a well-structured presentation you can’t stop reading? There’s a structure you can follow.

3-step process for organizing a magnetic presentation:

1. Prioritize content

Your presentation should immediately capture interest and demonstrate relevance before moving on to establish understanding .

A) Build interest:

Begin with a strong hook that grabs your audience's attention. This could be an intriguing statistic, a powerful image , or an engaging question. It should stir curiosity and make your audience eager to hear more.

B) Establish relevance:

Once you have their attention it's time to establish why your presentation matters to your audience.

Address your audience's main concerns. Make sure your content directly speaks to these pain points, and address them in order of importance.

2. Build anticipation

A great presentation is like getting a new car – it builds anticipation, takes you on a thrilling ride, and ends with you wanting to share the experience with all your friends.

Start with a compelling problem your audience relates to and follow up with a promise of an amazing way they can solve it. This problem-solution dynamic creates a suspense that keeps your audience glued to your presentation.

3. Use a story framework

Finally, use a story framework to give your presentation structure and flow.

Begin with a big idea that underpins your presentation. Then delve into the problem, showcasing why it needs attention. Present your solution, painting a vision of a better future for your audience.

Weave in concrete examples of how your solution changes lives.

Tell the story of WHO you helped, WHAT the situation was before and after your solution, WHERE and WHEN it happened, WHY it worked and HOW it made them feel.

What is narrated design (Scrollytelling)?

Scrollytelling, where "scroll" meets "storytelling", is an interactive content experience that guides readers through a narrative journey with a simple scroll. It connects text, images, videos, and animations into integrated “scenes” where content is both shown and narrated.

Scrollytelling breaks complex content into digestible chunks and gives the reader control over pace. It has been scientifically shown to enhance engagement, understandability and memorability.

How to design presentation visuals to support your story

Presentation visuals can be unsung heroes or sloppy distractions.

Visuals can bring your message to life, make complex concepts easy to understand, and engage your audience in ways that words alone cannot. Or… they can sit there looking all pretty and distract you from what’s really going on.

4 elements of great presentation visuals:

Support your message: Your visuals should support your text, highlight your main message, and align with your objective. They should reinforce your points and help your audience understand your message.

Represent your audience: The best visuals are relatable. They should resonate with your target audience and reflect their world of associations. Use images and graphics that your audience can identify with – this can enhance their engagement and make your presentation more memorable. Equally important is using clean images - an effective way to do this is by using tools that allow you to remove your image backgrounds . By eliminating distractions and focusing on your subject, you create images that are more impactful and, therefore, can potentially increase audience engagement.

If there’s one thing that we know, it’s presentations. We’ve seen some really good ones, and some really bad ones, too. The beauty of the presentation industry is that it’s always evolving. What looked good in 2017 probably doesn’t look good now. As experts in the field, we always have our finger on the pulse of presentation design. Beautiful.ai allows even the worst designers to create professional looking presentations, so there’s really no excuse for a bad deck, but we still see them. 

As we wrap up the year, we’re looking back at the highs and lows in the world of presentations. A year in review of sorts just in case you missed any noteworthy presentations or cringeworthy slides in the last 12 months.

We’re bad news first kind of people, so here are the three worst presentations of 2020.

1) bad data visualization.

We don’t know who made this slide, or where it came from, but we do know that they could really use a Beautiful.ai flowchart . We can probably assume that this particular slide wasn’t created in 2020, however that’s not to say there aren’t slides like this created on a daily basis. Data can be a hard sell, so it’s important to know how and when to use charts and graphs to help people view your data in a more easily digestible format.

2) Information overload

Coronavirus is complicated enough, we don't need to add a busy slide to the mix to try to explain the pandemic. The world had to digest a lot of bad news this year. People were turning to media outlets, publishers, and presentations to find out all they could about Coronavirus and how it would affect the world as they knew it. When you’re trying to absorb the unknown, it’s important that the information is clear, concise, and easy to understand. That is not the case with this slide, which comes from what might be the worst presentation of 2020. 3) The 2020 presidential debate

Political views aside, I think we can all agree that the first 2020 presidential debate was a total nightmare. Sure, there were no decks involved, but a bad bit of public speaking is just as bad as a cringeworthy physical presentation. It’s to be expected that debates will get heated, but this presidential debate was something else. The interruptions and personal attacks distracted from the core issues being discussed, and it painted a very clear picture of what not to do in a speech.

If you’ve ever heard someone give a powerful presentation, you probably remember how it made you feel. Much like a composer, a good speaker knows precisely when each note should strike to captivate their audience’s attention and leave them with a lasting impression.

No one becomes a great public speaker or presenter without practice. And almost everyone can recall a time one of their presentations went badly — that’s a painful part of the learning process.

Whether you’re working within a small creative team or a large organization, public speaking and presentation skills are vital to communicating your ideas. Knowing how to present your vision can help you pitch concepts to clients, present ideas to your team, and develop the confidence to participate in team meetings.

If you have an upcoming presentation on the horizon and feel nervous, that’s normal. Around 15-30% of the general population experience a fear of public speaking . And, unfortunately, social anxiety is on the rise, with a 12% increase in adults over the last 20 years . 

Learning how to give a good presentation can dismantle your fears and break down these barriers, ensuring you’re ready to confidently share your point of view. 

It’s the week before your presentation, and you’re already feeling nervous . Maybe there’ll be an important mentor in the room you need to impress, or you’re looking for an opportunity to show your boss your value. Regardless of your countless past presentations, you still feel nervous. 

Sharing your vision and ideas with any sized group is intimidating. You’re likely worrying about how you’ll perform as a presenter and whether the audience will be interested in what you offer. But nerves aren’t inherently negative — you can actually use this feeling to fuel your preparation.

It’s helpful to identify where your worries are coming from and address your fears. Here are some common concerns when preparing for an upcoming presentation:

Fear of public speaking: When you share your ideas in front of a group, you’re placing yourself in a vulnerable position to be critiqued on your knowledge and communication skills . Maybe you feel confident in your content, but when you think about standing in front of an audience, you feel anxious and your mind goes blank.

It’s also not uncommon to have physical symptoms when presenting . Some people experience nausea and dizziness as the brain releases adrenaline to cope with the potentially stressful situation . Remember to take deep breaths to recenter yourself and be patient, even if you make a mistake.

Losing the audience’s attention: As a presenter, your main focus is to keep your audience engaged. They should feel like they’re learning valuable information or following a story that will improve them in life or business.

Highlight the most exciting pieces of knowledge and ensure you emphasize those points in your presentation. If you feel passionate about your content, it’s more likely that your audience will experience this excitement for themselves and become invested in what you have to say.

Not knowing what content to place on presentation slides: Overloading presentation slides is a fast way to lose your audience’s attention. Your slides should contain only the main talking points and limited text to ensure your audience focuses on what you have to say rather than becoming distracted by the content on your slides.

Discomfort incorporating nonverbal communication: It’s natural to feel stiff and frozen when you’re nervous. But maintaining effective body language helps your audience stay focused on you as you speak and encourages you to relax.

If you struggle to incorporate body language into your presentations, try starting small by making hand gestures toward your slides. If you’re working with a large audience, use different parts of the stage to ensure everyone feels included. 

Each presenter has their own personal brand and style. Some may use humor to break the ice, while others might appeal to the audience’s emotional side through inspiring storytelling. 

Watching online presentations, such as TED talks, is an excellent way to expose yourself to various presentation styles and develop your own. While observing others, you can note how they carry themselves on stage and learn new ways to keep your audience engaged.

Once you’ve addressed what’s causing your fears, it’s time to prepare for a great presentation. Use your past experience as inspiration and aim to outshine your former self by learning from your mistakes and employing new techniques. Here are five presentation tips to help you create a strong presentation and wow your audience:

1. Keep it simple

Simple means something different to everyone.

Before creating your presentation, take note of your intended audience and their knowledge level of your subject. You’ll want your content to be easy for your intended audience to follow.

Say you’re giving a presentation on improving your company’s operational structure. Entry-level workers will likely need a more straightforward overview of the content than C-suite leaders, who have significantly more experience. 

Ask yourself what you want your audience to take away from your presentation and emphasize those important points. Doing this ensures they remember the most vital information rather than less important supporting ideas. Try organizing these concepts into bullet points so viewers can quickly identify critical takeaways.

2. Create a compelling structure

Put yourself in your audience member’s shoes and determine the most compelling way to organize your information. Your presentation should be articulate , cohesive, and logical, and you must be sure to include all necessary supporting evidence to strengthen your main points.

If you give away all of your answers too quickly, your audience could lose interest. And if there isn’t enough supporting information, they could hit a roadblock of confusion. Try developing a compelling story that leads your audience through your thought processes so they can experience the ups and downs alongside you. 

By structuring your presentation to lead up to a final conclusion, you’re more likely to keep listeners’ attention. Once you’ve reached that conclusion, you can offer a Q&A period to put any of their questions or concerns to rest. 

3. Use visual aids

Appealing to various learning styles is a great way to keep everyone on the same page and ensure they absorb your content. Visual aids are necessary for visual learners and make it easier for people to picture your ideas.

Aim to incorporate a mixture of photos, videos, and props to engage your audience and convey your key points. For instance, if you’re giving a presentation on anthropology subject matter, you could show your audience an artifact to help them understand how exciting a discovery must have been. 

If your presentation is long, including a video for your audience to watch is an excellent way to give yourself a break and create new jumping-off points for your speech.

4. Be aware of design techniques and trends

Thanks to cutting-edge technology and tools, you have numerous platforms at your disposal to create a good presentation. But keep in mind that although color, images, and graphics liven things up, they can cause distraction when misused.

  Here are a few standard pointers for incorporating visuals on your slides: 

  • Don’t place blocks of small text on a single slide
  • Use a minimalistic background instead of a busy one
  • Ensure text stands out against the background color
  • Only use high-resolution photos
  • Maintain a consistent font style and size throughout the presentation
  • Don’t overuse transitions and effects

5. Try the 10-20-30 rule

Guy Kawasaki, a prominent venture capitalist and one of the original marketing specialists for Apple, said that the best slideshow presentations are less than 10 slides , last at most 20 minutes, and use a font size of 30. Following this strategy can help you condense your information, eliminate unnecessary ideas, and maintain your audience’s focus more efficiently.

Once you’re confident in creating a memorable presentation, it’s time to learn how to give one. Here are some valuable tips for keeping your audience invested during your talk: 

Tip #1: Tell stories

Sharing an anecdote from your life can improve your credibility and increase your relatability. And when an audience relates to you, they’re more likely to feel connected to who you are as a person and encouraged to give you their full attention, as they would want others to do the same.

Gill Hicks utilized this strategy well when she shared her powerful story, “ I survived a terrorist attack. Here’s what I learned .” In her harrowing tale, Hicks highlights the importance of compassion, unconditional love, and helping those in need.

If you feel uncomfortable sharing personal stories, that’s okay. You can use examples from famous individuals or create a fictional account to demonstrate your ideas.

Tip #2: Make eye contact with the audience

Maintaining eye contact is less intimidating than it sounds. In fact, you don’t have to look your audience members directly in their eyes — you can focus on their foreheads or noses if that’s easier.

Try making eye contact with as many people as possible for 3–5 seconds each. This timing ensures you don’t look away too quickly, making the audience member feel unimportant, or linger too long, making them feel uncomfortable.

If you’re presenting to a large group, direct your focus to each part of the room to ensure no section of the audience feels ignored.

Tip #3: Work on your stage presence

Although your tone and words are the most impactful part of your presentation, recall that body language keeps your audience engaged. Use these tips to master a professional stage presence:

  • Speak with open arms and avoid crossing them
  • Keep a reasonable pace and try not to stand still
  • Use hand gestures to highlight important information

Tip #4: Start strong

Like watching a movie trailer, the first seconds of your talk are critical for capturing your audience’s attention. How you start your speech sets the tone for the rest of your presentation and tells your audience whether or not they should pay attention. Here are some ways to start your presentation to leave a lasting impression:

  • Use a quote from a well-known and likable influential person 
  • Ask a rhetorical question to create intrigue
  • Start with an anecdote to add context to your talk 
  • Spark your audience’s curiosity by involving them in an interactive problem-solving puzzle or riddle

Tip #5: Show your passion

Don’t be afraid of being too enthusiastic. Everyone appreciates a speaker who’s genuinely excited about their field of expertise.

Tip #6: Plan your delivery

How you decide to deliver your speech will shape your presentation. Will you be preparing a PowerPoint presentation and using a teleprompter? Or are you working within the constraints of the digital world and presenting over Zoom?

The best presentations are conducted by speakers who know their stuff and memorize their content. However, if you find this challenging, try creating notes to use as a safety net in case you lose track.

If you’re presenting online, you can keep notes beside your computer for each slide, highlighting your key points. This ensures you include all the necessary information and follow a logical order.

Tip #7: Practice

Practice doesn’t make perfect — it makes progress. There’s no way of preparing for unforeseen circumstances, but thorough practice means you’ve done everything you can to succeed.

Rehearse your speech in front of a mirror or to a trusted friend or family member. Take any feedback and use it as an opportunity to fine-tune your speech. But remember: who you practice your presentation in front of may differ from your intended audience. Consider their opinions through the lens of them occupying this different position.

Tip #8: Read the room

Whether you’re a keynote speaker at an event or presenting to a small group of clients, knowing how to read the room is vital for keeping your audience happy. Stay flexible and be willing to move on from topics quickly if your listeners are uninterested or displeased with a particular part of your speech.

Tip #9: Breathe

Try taking deep breaths before your presentation to calm your nerves. If you feel rushed, you’re more likely to feel nervous and stumble on your words.

The most important thing to consider when presenting is your audience’s feelings. When you approach your next presentation calmly, you’ll put your audience at ease and encourage them to feel comfortable in your presence.

Tip #10: Provide a call-to-action

When you end your presentation, your audience should feel compelled to take a specific action, whether that’s changing their habits or contacting you for your services.

If you’re presenting to clients, create a handout with key points and contact information so they can get in touch. You should provide your LinkedIn information, email address, and phone number so they have a variety of ways to reach you. 

There’s no one-size-fits-all template for an effective presentation, as your unique audience and subject matter play a role in shaping your speech. As a general rule, though, you should aim to connect with your audience through passion and excitement. Use strong eye contact and body language. Capture their interest through storytelling and their trust through relatability.

Learning how to give a good presentation can feel overwhelming — but remember, practice makes progress. Rehearse your presentation for someone you trust, collect their feedback , and revise. Practicing your presentation skills is helpful for any job, and every challenge is a chance to grow.

If you’re like most people, you probably “prepared” by opening up PowerPoint the night before your presentation, cobbling together a few dozen slides from decks you or your colleagues have used in the past, peppering in a few stock photos, and counting on your ability to “wing it” in person.

The world's most captivating communicators know better. They invest more time in the idea than the slides. Don’t sell yourself short by jumping head-first into presentation software. Take the time to thoughtfully craft your story on paper before you even think about creating a single slide.

3. Think of your presentation as a story.

Expert speakers carefully, painstakingly plan, storyboard, script, design, and rehearse their presentations like an Oscar-winning Hollywood director prepares their film for the big screen. They’ve seen the impact that a carefully crafted story can have on influencing an audience, and they know that skipping this crucial first step is what separates average communicators from extraordinary ones.

According to Nancy Duarte, the communications expert behind Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth , presenters should dedicate roughly 30 hours to researching, organizing, sketching, storyboarding, scripting, and revising the story for a one-hour presentation.

4. Tell your story in 3 acts.

“The way something is presented will define the way you react to it.”   — Neville Brody , Designer

Most presentations follow some variation on the following format:

  • Who I am 
  • What I do (or what my company does)
  • How my product/company/idea is different
  • Why you should buy/invest/support me now

The world’s most captivating communicators typically rely on a three-act structure , more common in modern storytelling than in corporate conference rooms. The narrative is divided into three parts -- the setup, the confrontation, and the resolution -- and comes complete with vivid characters, heroes, and villains.

The following image provides a snapshot of the three-act structure and which critical questions are answered for the audience in each:

Notice that this structure turns the typical presentation “flow” on its head.

Instead of following a WHO > WHAT > HOW > WHY flow, master communicators like Steve Jobs prefer a WHY > HOW > WHAT format:

  • Why should the audience care
  • How the idea/product will make their lives better
  • What action they need to take

This works because expert speakers recognize that the first thing they need to do when standing in front of an audience is get them to care.

By structuring your presentation with a clear and compelling beginning, middle, and end, you’ll take your audience on an exciting journey… the kind that inspires action, sells products, and funds businesses.

5. It's not always about being unique. 

 “I tell my story, not because it is unique, but because it is not. It is the story of many girls.”   — Malala Yousafzai , Activist and Speaker

Writers and communicators often agonize over how they can be innovative and different. However, sometimes it's better to be universal and resonant.

Malala's story has been described as inspiring, courageous, and touching, yet "Malala does not consider herself extraordinary. That is 'simply Malala,' as she would describe herself" ( Source ).

Nonetheless, her speaking and advocacy helps to fight for girls' education on an international scale.

If you bring authenticity and passion to your audience, saying something new becomes less of a concern.

6. You don't need to memorize word-for-word.

 “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”   — Maya Angelou , Poet and Activist

It's natural to want to deliver your speech "perfectly" every time. Your inclination might be to memorize each word or read directly from your speaker's notes. This can cause a lot of undue nervousness. But guess what? You can let that all go.

Your audience doesn't know what you were going to say; they only hear what you are saying. And, as Maya Angelou said, they won't remember the exact words you spoke but rather how you spoke them and how it made them feel.

Instead of memorization, rely on the topic you know well. Practice explaining it off the cuff.

7. Speak from the heart.

 “Emotionally charged events persist much longer in our memories and are recalled with greater accuracy than neutral memories.”   — John Medina, Brain Rules

Maya Angelou's quote in the previous tip isn't just about memorization, though. There's another point she's making.

While virtually every presentation relies on some form of data to illustrate or emphasize the core point, master communicators like Steve Jobs know that data alone ain’t enough.

Science again comes to our aid in explaining how and why this is important. In his book, Brain Rules , molecular biologist John Medina has this to say about the role of emotion on the human brain:

“An emotionally charged event (usually called an ECS, short for emotionally competent stimulus) is the best-processed kind of external stimulus ever measured.” 

Chip and Dan Heath further elaborate on the impact that emotion can have on persuasive communication in their book, Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die . The authors describe an exercise that Chip does with his students at Stanford University. The students are tasked with giving a one-minute persuasive speech. Everyone must present on the same topic, with half the class arguing for one point of view and the other half arguing for the opposite point of view.

After everyone has given their one-minute speech, the students are invited to rate each other on the effectiveness of the presentations, and then instructed to write down key points made by each speaker.

Here’s the data they collected from this exercise:

  • On average, the students used 2.5 statistics during their one-minute speeches
  • 1/10 of the students used a personal story to make their point
  • 63% of the class remembered details from the speeches that used stories
  • Only 5% remember the statistics that were shared

The Heaths drew this conclusion from the data:

“The stars of stickiness are the students who made their case by telling stories, or by tapping into emotion , or by stressing a single point rather than ten.”

With this in mind, make sure your presentation content goes beyond pure “facts.” Triggering audience emotion is a guaranteed way to increase retention and impact of your core message. You can do that by speaking from the heart.

8. Use compelling imagery as a component in your speech.

“A picture is worth 1,000 words.”

There’s a reason why expressions like, “Seeing is believing” and, “A picture is worth 1000 words” are so universally recognized --  and that reason is based in science.

It’s called the Picture Superiority Effect , and it refers to a large body of research, which shows that humans more easily learn and recall information that is presented as pictures than when the same information is presented in words.

In one experiment, for instance, subjects who were presented with information orally could remember about 10% of the content 72 hours later. Those who were presented with information in picture format were able to recall 65% of the content.

Not only do we remember visual input better, but we also process visual information 60,000x faster in the brain than we do text.

Sure, it takes more time to find and select awesome images to replace text, but master communicators know that it’s worth the extra effort to achieve maximum impact and maximum audience retention.

9. Ditch the bullet points.

 “The minute you put bullet points on the screen, you are announcing ‘write this down, but don’t really pay attention to it now.’ People don’t take notes at the opera.”   — Seth Godin, Really Bad PowerPoint

Seth’s right. Researchers have demonstrated time and time again that text and bullet points are the least effective way to deliver important information. Yet despite clear evidence that wordy, bullet-point-heavy slides don’t work, the average PowerPoint slide has 40 words. No wonder SlideRocket has found that 32% of people fall asleep during PowerPoint presentations, and 20% would rather go to the dentist than sit through another one!

This may be hard to believe, but Steve Jobs never used a single bullet point. Not once. His presentations were always remarkable spare, relying on a few powerful images and carefully selected words or phrases.

Even during product demos where Jobs explains or demonstrates key benefits of a new product, his slides are refreshingly devoid of bullet points. 

Our short-term memory can hold onto fewer than 7 items for no longer than 10-15 seconds.

So, imagine you’re introducing the world’s thinnest notebook. Replace the bulleted list of techie product features with a photograph of a large, manila office envelope.

Or perhaps you’re trying to inspire an audience to help your nonprofit end the water crisis? Skip the bulleted list of statistics in favor of a short, powerful video that shows rather than tells why everyone in the room should care.

10. Spend time rehearsing.

 “Spending energy to understand the audience and carefully crafting a message that resonates with them means making a commitment of time and discipline to the process.”   — Nancy Duarte, Communications Expert

Creating a presentation that informs, entertains, AND inspires an audience takes a lot of time. The first 30 hours will be spent researching, sketching, planning, and revising your story. The next 30 hours will go toward building simple, highly visual slides with very few words and NO BULLETS.

But the final 30 hours will go toward rehearsing the delivery.

It takes 90 hours to craft a world-class, 60-minute presentation.

When was the last time you spent 30 hours rehearsing for a presentation?

Of all of the lessons revealed above, this one is undoubtedly the most often overlooked. Don’t be the person who does everything by the book, only to blow it all at the very end by failing to practice. A lot.

30 hours of rehearsing may be painful. It’s definitely time-consuming. But there are no shortcuts to excellence.

11. Use plain English.

 “iPod. One thousand songs in your pocket.”   — Steve Jobs

When Steve Jobs introduced the world to the iPod, he could have said something like this: 

“Today we’re introducing a new, portable music player that weighs a mere 6.5 ounces, is about the size of a sardine can, and boasts voluminous capacity, long battery life, and lightning-fast transfer speeds.”

But he didn’t. Instead, he said: “iPod. One thousand songs in your pocket.”

Jobs could have described the MacBook Air as a “smaller, lighter MacBook Pro with a generously-sized 13.3-inch, 1280- by 800-pixel, glossy LED screen and a full-size keyboard.”

Instead, he walked on stage with an office-sized manila envelope, pulled the notebook out and simply said, “What is MacBook Air? In a sentence, it’s the world’s thinnest notebook.”

Unlike most of his contemporaries, Jobs generally avoided complicated stats, technical data, buzzwords , and jargon in his presentations. Instead, he relied on simple, clear, direct language that was easy to understand, easy to remember, and better yet, extremely “tweetable.” Jobs frequently used metaphors and analogies to bring meaning to numbers.

A closer look at some of Jobs’ most famous keynotes reads like a presentation in “headlines” --  powerful, memorable, specific statements that consistently add up to fewer than 140 characters.

Now take a look at one of your recent presentations. Is it buoyant with simple, specific, tweetable headlines? Does the script read like plain English that a 7-year-old could understand? Do you put data and stats in context so their meaning is clear and easy-to-digest? Have you ruthlessly pruned out all of the jargon, including overused, meaningless terms like “integrated,” “platform,” “leading-edge,” “synergy,” and so on?

If you want to improve your ability to persuade an audience, do your best Steve Jobs impression. Use simple language, free of jargon. Make sure your key messages are concrete and consistent. And don’t forget to use vivid metaphors or analogies to provide context and clarity around big numbers and complex ideas.  

Final Thoughts on These Public Speaking Tips

On September 28, 1997, Apple debuted its now famous “Think Different” ad campaign, which featured a series of black-and-white images of iconic figures like Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., and Amelia Earhart. While their images flashed on the screen, the following words were spoken:

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square hole. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

The goal of the “Think Different” campaign was to sell computers. Notice how the word “computer” didn’t appear even once in the script.

I point this out as a final thought, because it summarizes a crucial, remarkable quality shared by most of the world’s most captivating communicators. They may have wildly different presentation styles, but they all have this in common:

They don’t just provide “information;” they convey meaning --  and they do it with passion.

Slideshows are an intuitive way to share complex ideas with an audience, although they're dull and frustrating when poorly executed. Here are some tips to make your Microsoft PowerPoint presentations sing while avoiding common pitfalls.

It all starts with identifying what we're trying to achieve with the presentation. Is it informative, a showcase of data in an easy-to-understand medium? Or is it more of a pitch, something meant to persuade and convince an audience and lead them to a particular outcome?

It's here where the majority of these presentations go wrong with the inability to identify the talking points that best support our goal. Always start with a goal in mind: to entertain, to inform, or to share data in a way that's easy to understand. Use facts, figures, and images to support your conclusion while keeping structure in mind (Where are we now and where are we going?).

I've found that it's helpful to start with the ending. Once I know how to end a presentation, I know how best to get to that point. I start by identifying the takeaway---that one nugget that I want to implant before thanking everyone for their time---and I work in reverse to figure out how best to get there.

Your mileage, of course, may vary. But it's always going to be a good idea to put in the time in the beginning stages so that you aren't reworking large portions of the presentation later. And that starts with a defined goal.

A slideshow isn't supposed to include everything. It's an introduction to a topic, one that we can elaborate on with speech. Anything unnecessary is a distraction. It makes the presentation less visually appealing and less interesting, and it makes you look bad as a presenter.

This goes for text as well as images. There's nothing worse, in fact, than a series of slides where the presenter just reads them as they appear. Your audience is capable of reading, and chances are they'll be done with the slide, and browsing Reddit, long before you finish. Avoid putting the literal text on the screen, and your audience will thank you.

Right off the bat, we're just going to come out and say that Papyrus and Comic Sans should be banned from all PowerPoint presentations, permanently. Beyond that, it's worth considering the typeface you're using and what it's saying about you, the presenter, and the presentation itself.

Consider choosing readability over aesthetics, and avoid fancy fonts that could prove to be more of a distraction than anything else. A good presentation needs two fonts: a serif and sans-serif. Use one for the headlines and one for body text, lists, and the like. Keep it simple. Veranda, Helvetica, Arial, and even Times New Roman are safe choices. Stick with the classics and it's hard to botch this one too badly.

There reaches a point where bullet points become less of a visual aid and more of a visual examination.

Bullet points should support the speaker, not overwhelm his audience. The best slides have little or no text at all, in fact. As a presenter, it's our job to talk through complex issues, but that doesn't mean that we need to highlight every talking point.

Instead, think about how you can break up large lists into three or four bullet points. Carefully consider whether you need to use more bullet points, or if you can combine multiple topics into a single point instead. And if you can't, remember that there's no one limiting the number of slides you can have in a presentation. It's always possible to break a list of 12 points down into three pages of four points each.

Animation, when used correctly, is a good idea. It breaks up slow-moving parts of a presentation and adds action to elements that require it. But it should be used judiciously.

Adding a transition that wipes left to right between every slide or that animates each bullet point in a list, for example, starts to grow taxing on those forced to endure the presentation. Viewers get bored quickly, and animations that are meant to highlight specific elements quickly become taxing.

That's not to say that you can't use animations and transitions, just that you need to pick your spots. Aim for no more than a handful of these transitions for each presentation. And use them in spots where they'll add to the demonstration, not detract from it.

Sometimes images tell a better story than text can. And as a presenter, your goal is to describe points in detail without making users do a lot of reading. In these cases, a well-designed visual, like a chart, might better convey the information you're trying to share.

The right image adds visual appeal and serves to break up longer, text-heavy sections of the presentation---but only if you're using the right images. A single high-quality image can make all the difference between a success and a dud when you're driving a specific point home.

When considering text, don't think solely in terms of bullet points and paragraphs. Tables, for example, are often unnecessary. Ask yourself whether you could present the same data in a bar or line chart instead.

Color is interesting. It evokes certain feelings and adds visual appeal to your presentation as a whole. Studies show that color also improves interest, comprehension, and retention. It should be a careful consideration, not an afterthought.

You don't have to be a graphic designer to use color well in a presentation. What I do is look for palettes I like, and then find ways to use them in the presentation. There are a number of tools for this, like Adobe Color , Coolors , and ColorHunt , just to name a few. After finding a palette you enjoy, consider how it works with the presentation you're about to give. Pastels, for example, evoke feelings of freedom and light, so they probably aren't the best choice when you're presenting quarterly earnings that missed the mark.

It's also worth mentioning that you don't need to use every color in the palette. Often, you can get by with just two or three, though you should really think through how they all work together and how readable they'll be when layered. A simple rule of thumb here is that contrast is your friend. Dark colors work well on light backgrounds, and light colors work best on dark backgrounds.

Spend some time in the Slide Sorter before you finish your presentation. By clicking the four squares at the bottom left of the presentation, you can take a look at multiple slides at once and consider how each works together. Alternatively, you can click "View" on the ribbon and select "Slide Sorter."

Are you presenting too much text at once? Move an image in. Could a series of slides benefit from a chart or summary before you move on to another point?

It's here that we have the opportunity to view the presentation from beyond the single-slide viewpoint and think in terms of how each slide fits, or if it fits at all. From this view, you can rearrange slides, add additional ones, or delete them entirely if you find that they don't advance the presentation.

The difference between a good presentation and a bad one is really all about preparation and execution. Those that respect the process and plan carefully---not only the presentation as a whole, but each slide within it---are the ones who will succeed.

This brings me to my last (half) point: When in doubt, just buy a template and use it. You can find these all over the web, though Creative Market and GraphicRiver are probably the two most popular marketplaces for this kind of thing. Not all of us are blessed with the skills needed to design and deliver an effective presentation. And while a pre-made PowerPoint template isn't going to make you a better presenter, it will ease the anxiety of creating a visually appealing slide deck.

Why does that matter? If we are trying to make a point stick, cortisol assists with our formulating memories. So, how do you nail down a storytelling strategy that sticks? Let’s break it down.

Craft Your Narrative

First, identify your core message. What’s the one thing you want your audience to remember when they walk out of the room? This is your North Star, guiding every aspect of your presentation. If you’re having trouble with this step, ask yourself, “Why am I giving this presentation?”

Understand Your Audience

Who is your audience? Tailor your story to resonate with them. Are they tech-savvy millennials or industry veterans? Your story should speak their language. Presentations that skip this step will miss out on a crucial opportunity to connect with the audience. And if you can’t connect with them, then what’s the point? Start with a big, relevant shift in the world. “We are living in a new era” type of statement. This will grab the attention, but also create some urgency for the prospect.

Then you move on to show that there will be winners and losers in this new era. The ones who act on this shift will have more probability of winning. In other words, “what I am about to offer you is crucial for winning in this new era.”

Now that you have set the stage, you can “tease the promise land” as Andy calls it. This is not where you show your product features. This is simply a teaser about this new future state and what to expect if you react to this shift in the market.

Then, you highlight the “Old world vs New world” to show the contrast, and how old methods do not work in this new era.

And finally, you provide real-life stories to support your claims. These could client case studies, article snippets, industry updates - anything that adds credibility to everything you just said.

I really wanted to love Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. The story is gripping, and the visuals and sound design are unmatched by any game of this console generation. However, with very restrictive gameplay that feels visceral at first but gets tedious fast, you start to realize that this feels more like a tech demo with a great plot.

I’ll be honest. Senua's Saga: Hellblade II has been the hardest game for me to review in my many years of doing this.

There are as many reasons for me to have given this full marks as there are to go all the way to the other end of the scale. The conflicting voices in my head all centered around one key question: where’s the game?

This is a visual and aural spectacle — the first game that truly feels like a next-gen title (a whole 3.5 years after the new generation started) with an incredible presence to see and hear, but where’s the game?

A (mostly) well-crafted story grabs you by the scruff of the neck and drags you into its world of sheer physical and psychological brutality, with a truly evocative tale that pays off so sweetly. But, I ask again, where’s the game?

Let me be clear — this isn’t necessarily a diss on the six-hour runtime. I will always be in support of quality over quantity (looking at you, final act of The Last Of Us Part II ). But to someone who adored Senua’s first adventure, I was left watching the credits roll with a conflicted sense of disappointment.

A sequel to a game like this needs evolution in its gameplay. Instead, we get stripped-down combat and tedious puzzles that only serve as frustrating breaks from seeing where the journey goes. Hellblade II looks and sounds incredible (thanks to Unreal Engine 5), and tells a short but impactful story that sticks with you, but once more, where’s the game? Let’s try and find it.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II: The Basics

  • What is it? A linear third-person action-adventure title set in Viking Iceland.
  • Who is it for? Hellblade II is for those who love to get whisked away with a good story, without much gameplay challenge.
  • What’s the price? To buy upfront, this is a full-price title at $50/£50. But it is available to play via Xbox Game Pass.
  • What other games has the developer made? Ninja Theory didn’t just make the original Hellblade (Senua’s Sacrifice), the team was responsible for other gems such as DMC: Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, and the interesting 4v4 title Bleeding Edge.
  • What games is this similar to? It’s hard to find something that is exactly akin to Hellblade, but I can throw up some games that give similar vibes, such as A Plague Tale: Requiem for its narrative experience, as well as What Remains of Edith Finch for the game being purely a vehicle for storytelling. Gameplay is a far more rudimentary version of what is seen in God of War: Ragnarok, and as I mentioned above, this short glimpse of visual beauty feels like a tech demo akin to The Order: 1886.

I’m not going to divulge a single element of the story, as Senua’s second tale is best enjoyed completely blind. Put simply, this is yet another gripping tale of psychosis and inner turmoil that will have you questioning what’s real and what’s just in your head — perfectly backed up by a visual and aural presentation (more on that later).

Additional characters are a little awkwardly placed here, and the character development just isn’t possible within a short six-hour runtime. Plus, the final third can start to feel a little rushed, but the payoff at the end feels oh-so-satisfying and raises a lot of questions that only eager-eyed players hunting for lore will find answers to.

Speaking of, this next bit is more of a word to the wise than a spoiler. Make sure you’re looking for all the additional lore poles (known as Lorestangir) and replay the game a couple of times. There are alternative narrators that really start to give the story a more fascinating context.

From the delicate treatment of psychological trauma to the big emotionally evocative beats of this tale, I loved the journey this mature narrative took me on.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II

To tell this story, Ninja Theory leans on two key technologies — Unreal Engine 5 and binaural audio. The result is the best-looking and sounding experience I’ve witnessed. No, that is not hyperbolic.

It’s not even in some big showy way, like how CD Projekt Red went big on ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 . Rather, every single detail feels intricately crafted and core to the plot development. No stone in this brutal Icelandic landscape is left unturned, and I was mesmerized.

Now, I could go all into what tech is driving this beauty, from Nanite giving every element an almost photographic-like quality, to the Lumen lighting system that gives everything a filmic depth. Instead, I’m just going to share two key moments (spoiler-free) where I was left absolutely stunned by watching/hearing all of this come together.

First was the opening few minutes. Yes, it’s a glorified walking sim (more on the gameplay later), but from seeing the incredibly realized facial expressions on Senua and her nemesis, to the rain splashing off every individual stone of the rugged Icelandic coastline and the waves crashing in with real ferocity, there is a brutal beauty to everything.

Combine that with the voices in Senua’s head surrounding you and feeling as if someone is whispering gently into your ear, and you’ve got a helluva opener that hits each sense and makes a lasting impression. This quality of presentation exists throughout, and I would be shocked if I didn’t see Melina Juergens win big at The Game Awards for her incredible performance as a psychologically torn character.

Secondly, there’s a photo mode in the game. It appears rather ordinary at first, but when you see how the real-time graphics react to your tweaks such as adding key lights or weather conditions, you're able to fully appreciate the gorgeous graphics. Every rock refracts and reacts to the lighting, Nanite detail shows every dirt-clogged pore on Senua’s face with shocking impeccable detail. Most importantly, in the heat of the moment, this tech is used for storytelling — it’s not just a good-looking experience for the sake of it.

Hellblade II is a paradigm shift for real-time graphics and a new standard-bearer for sound design. But as any gamer will know, the presentation is half the story, which leads me to my biggest bugbear.

More theme park ride than game

I need to go back to when I played the first Hellblade. In three words, I would describe Senua’s Sacrifice as “simple but satisfying” in the gameplay department.

This time around, combat feels very bare bones on paper, but without explanation from the original game, you’re left to your own devices to discover the finer details. Namely, there are various combos, dodge attacks, and parries you can do that really vary up your battle tactics. On top of that, the fact the voices in your head warn you of any secondary enemies behind you is a fantastic bit of interactive storytelling.

As for puzzles, I could tell that Ninja Theory was onto something here. The focus-based puzzles of lining up pieces of the scenery to unlock the next section were fascinating but very one-note.

So my wishlist heading into the sequel was simple:

  • Lean more into the multi-enemy combat and psychosis guiding you through it
  • Maybe add a new weapon with its own set of attack/dodging types to discover
  • Approach the focus-based puzzle with more variety in mind

And what did we get? A dumbed-down puzzle structure and far more restricted combat that feels almost as awkward as when you watch pro wrestlers look on and wait to receive a Stone Cold Stunner one by one.

Let’s start with the fighting. It looks good and feels crunchy because of the sound effects, and narrowing the parry window does add a tiny bit of challenge to this aspect. But in my time experiencing this, combat was essentially a rudimentary set of one-on-one skirmishes with no variety whatsoever. No additional weapons (beyond the spear fighting the giant), and even stripping the implementation of multiple enemies I loved from the first game out of it.

Turning my attention to puzzles, I’d be lying if I didn’t say there were some that I enjoyed. The focus-based obstacles do still feel unique to Hellblade. But while the first game was relatively simple, Hellblade II is even easier, as a subtle camera lock gives away where the solution is. It turned these moments into very tedious breaks from the next chapter in Senua’s story.

It’s almost as if Senua’s Saga took one step forward in the visual presentation of gameplay, but two steps back in the gameplay itself.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is a great Game Pass game and a technical tour de force with a captivating story.

In the incredibly brief romp through this linear-but-beautiful landscape, I took regular breaks hoping for maybe a new weapon with new mechanics to spice things up, or some fresher takes on the focus-based puzzles to make it stand out more. Instead, I was left feeling conflicted.

My heart and soul give the storytelling and presentation an easy five stars. It will definitely win awards for its craft. But after putting the controller down, my head and hands couldn't agree with my heart. In the end, I'm still left with one simple question: where’s the game?
