Save a WhatsApp chat on PC via the Android/iPhone app

It might sound a bit weird to use the Android/iPhone app to save a conversation to your PC, but trust me, this is the cleanest way. There is another method outlined below if you purely want to use WhatsApp for Web, though.

In the Android app, open the chat you want to save, tap the three dots in the top-right corner and select More > Export Chat (as highlighted in the screenshot below).

The process is the same on iPhone, but you tap the name of the conversation to find the Export Chat function, instead of three dots.

When you hit Export Chat, you’ll be given the option to export with or without media (ie. photos, videos etc). If you choose to export with these, they will come as attachments, they won’t be embedded in the text conversation.

When you’ve made your choice, you’ll be asked which app you want to export to. Here, a file sync service such as OneDrive or Dropbox would be ideal, presuming you have that service also syncing files to your PC.

Alternatively, choose an email app such as Gmail. If you’ve chosen to export without media the files should be very small, even with massively long chats going back years, so you shouldn’t have any problems sending that email to your PC.

Now simply open the text file on your PC. You can save it to a new location if you wish.

Save a WhatsApp chat on PC with WhatsApp for Web

The other, less elegant way to save a WhatsApp conversation on your PC is to copy and paste it directly out of WhatsApp for Web.

If you’ve never used WhatsApp for Web, it allows you to read and send WhatsApp messages from your PC or Mac web browser. It doesn’t have quite as many features as the mobile apps, but it’s handy if you’re sat at a computer for work all day, for example. To set it up, you’ll need to visit the WhatsApp for Web website and follow the instructions, which basically involve scanning a QR code from within the WhatsApp app on your phone to verify it’s you.

WhatsApp for Web doesn’t have the same Export Chat featured above. It does, however, let you click into a conversation and drag the cursor upwards, until you’ve copied the contents of an entire conversation.

When you’ve got as much of the conversation highlighted as you want to copy, press Ctrl + C on a PC or Command + C on a Mac to copy the conversation to the clipboard.

Then open a blank document in a text app such as Microsoft Word and press Ctrl + V (PC) or Command + V (Mac) to paste the contents of the chat into the document. You can now save that document on your PC/Mac.

Sometimes you want to add a little emphasis to certain words in your messages. If you're a WhatsApp user, you can add four types of emphasis, either inline or from a menu.

The types of formatting you can apply in a WhatsApp message are bold , italics, strikethrough , and monospacing. To manually apply the formatting, you need to place a particular punctuation mark on either side of a word (or series of words):

Bold: Place an asterisk on either side (*bold*).
Italicize: Place an underscore on either side (_italic_).
Strikethrough: Place a tilde on either side (~strikethrough~).
Monospace: Place three back ticks on either side ( `` `monospace` `` ).

When you send your message, the text will be displayed with the chosen formatting.

If you're not big on typing---especially if you want to use monospace (the back tick is often hidden away on smartphone keyboards)---you can also use the built-in formatting menu.

Long press the word you want to format and the menu will appear. In the case of Android, the Bold option will already be visible. To access the other formatting options, tap the three dots on the right side of the menu or the BIU option on the menu for iPhone.

This will display the other formatting options for you to choose from.

Choose your desired formatting option---we're going to pick monospace---and the relevant punctuation marks will be added automatically.

One of the most popular methods for sending a blank message in WhatsApp without any third-party tool is the bracket method. Here, create a space between two brackets in a web browser. Then, cut the space out and leave the brackets. Once done, paste the space in the message window and send it as a blank message. Here’s a step-by-step look for more clarity.

Note: Upon testing, we found this method to be intermittently successful when using the latest version of WhatsApp. If this also happens to you, skip to any of the other methods mentioned below.

Step 1: Open any web browser on your mobile. Here, type ( ) . Ensure you use the spacebar to create a space between the two brackets.

Step 2: Then, tap on done.

Step 3: Now, tap and select the space between the two brackets.

Step 4: Once the options appear, tap on Cut.

Step 5: Open WhatsApp and tap on the relevant contact.

Step 6: Long-press on the message bar and tap on Paste.

Step 7: Once the option becomes available, tap on Send.

This will send a blank message to the selected contact. While we’re using a mobile device for demonstration purposes, you can repeat the above steps and send a blank message using a web browser and the WhatsApp web or desktop app.

2. By Copying Blank Unicode Characters

Certain Unicode code points, like the Braille pattern U+2800, can be read as blank spaces by websites and apps. This means once you copy and paste the character, it will appear as an empty space on WhatsApp. However, since it was initially a Braille pattern, it should be recognized as a message in the chat window. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open any web browser and use the below link to open the Unicode Character U+2800.

This can also help as certain Unicode characters might not be recognized as blank text by WhatsApp. Additionally, you can generate more lines of blank text than the previous method. Follow the below steps to do it.

While WhatsApp lets us save our entire app data to Google Drive or iCloud, it doesn’t let us export dedicated conversations easily. Though, if you want, you can export a WhatsApp chat to PDF or email and save it on your computer. The process to export a chat in WhatsApp is pretty simple and would not need any extra effort. In this post, I will let you know how to export WhatsApp chats on iPhone or Android like a pro with some other tips.

Part 1: How to Export WhatsApp Chats to PDF on PC?

One of the best things about WhatsApp is that you can export individual chats to a text file if you want to. As of now, the feature to export chats in WhatsApp only lets us save messages and not the shared attachments. Once you have exported your chats as a text file, you can transfer it to your computer, and save it in PDF format. If you think the process to export WhatsApp chats to PDF sounds complicated, then follow these steps:

Step 1: Export chats in a TXT format

At first, you can just launch WhatsApp on your device and go to the conversation that you wish to export. Now, tap on the three-dot icon from the top to select the “Export Chat” option on WhatsApp. In the newer versions, it would be listed under More > Export Chat instead.

This will provide different options to export the chats as a TXT file. You can select a preferred mode to save the TXT file on the device or can just upload it to Google Drive to easily share it.

Step 2: Export WhatsApp chats to PDF

Once you have shared the exported chats to Google Drive, you can access it on your PC and download the document. Now, simply open the WhatsApp chat on MS Word to view the conversation. Finally, go to its Main Menu > File > Save As and choose to save the document as a “PDF” file under the “Save as type” field.

That’s it! This will let you export all chats from WhatsApp to your PC in a PDF format.

This is another convenient way to export chats in WhatsApp that can be done on both Android and iOS devices. The process to export WhatsApp chats is pretty similar on iOS and Android, but the overall interface would vary. As you would export chats from WhatsApp via an email, the app will give you an option to include or exclude videos. Ideally, it is recommended to exclude videos since most of the email clients have a maximum capacity of only 20 MB per mail.

Method 1: Export WhatsApp Chats on iPhone

Firstly, you can just launch WhatsApp on your iOS device, select a chat, and swipe it to visit More Options > Export Chat. Alternatively, you can also open the conversation, tap on the more options from here, and choose the “Export Chat” feature.

Now, WhatsApp will give you options to include or exclude videos in the zipped WhatsApp chat file. Later, you can select “Mail” as an option to export chats from WhatsApp. This will launch the Mail app on iPhone with the attached WhatsApp chats that you can send to anyone (or yourself).

Method 2: Export WhatsApp Chats on Android

The process to export chats from WhatsApp on Android is pretty similar as well. Once you have opened the WhatsApp conversation, tap on the three-dot icon from the top, and select More > Export Chat feature.

Furthermore, you can choose to email the WhatsApp chat and select a preferred email server from the list. You can log-in to your email account from here and its window would automatically be opened with the attached document that you can later send to your email id.

Copy and preserve formatting when copy pasting from WhatsApp web to any editor

I have WhatsApp open in a browser using WhatsApp web. There are messages that I receive that have formatting included, say bolding of a few words, italics, underlines etc. Now I want to copy the message from the WhatsApp chat thread and paste it to Wordpress blogs retaining the formatting as is. However, when I copy from the WhatsApp and paste it outside (in a blog or in a text editor like Sublime, TextEdit, Microsoft Word etc.), none of them are preserving the formatting. How do I achieve this?

One way to do this is to open the necessary chat in WhatsApp web in a browser, then open the rendered code using "Inspect Element" and copy the html code from there. That will have the bold/italic tags etc. as needed.

WhatsApp: How to find your message backups in Google Drive

W hatsApp's backups protect you from losing chats, media, and stickers. When you connect your Google account with the app, your data syncs to the cloud based on the frequency you select. You can restore what you lost if you accidentally clear your chat history, uninstall the app, or set up a new device . Local backups are also an option if you don't have anything in Drive.

Sometimes, a bad internet connection or manual settings can affect your backups. Although WhatsApp initiates the process when you're back online, you want to ensure your data is up-to-date and safe. You can check its location on Google Drive or your Android tablet and phone's storage. You'll also see when the last backup occurred. Here's how.

Where does WhatsApp store backups?

WhatsApp stores backups in Google Drive if you permit it to do so. Depending on the frequency you choose, the app uploads your data to the cloud daily, weekly, monthly, or only when you tap the Back up button. Each backup to the same Google account overwrites the previous one, so there isn't a way to keep multiple versions or restore older ones.

One way to bypass it is to add another Google account to WhatsApp and switch between them. However, if you don't back up regularly, Google deletes your data from Drive after five months.

As of December 2023, WhatsApp backups count towards your Google Drive storage , which means no more free space. You should notice a message on the app concerning the change. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup .

If you access Google Drive from a PC browser, your WhatsApp backup exists under the Storage menu. It's in an unreadable format, so you can't view the content or select what to retrieve. You'll only find options to delete it or turn off backups completely, which is useful when you no longer need them or when they're corrupt. On the mobile app, your data is in the Chat backup menu.

WhatsApp also creates local backups daily on your phone or SD card. If you can't restore a Drive backup or don't have one, your device scans for the local versions. You'll remove your Google account from the device for it to work, and you can't change the frequency of local backups or view the content.

Although many third-party software claim to decrypt WhatsApp backups, we don't recommend them as they may not work. Some contain malware that harms or steals information from your device. To protect your data, activate end-to-end encryption . You'll enter a password or 64-digit encryption key when restoring it.

How to find and restore your WhatsApp backup in Google Drive

Use a PC browser to access your Google Drive backup for a wider view. You may also use the mobile app or browser if a computer isn't available. For the full experience, switch to Desktop mode and ensure you're logged in to the correct Google account.

Re-installation or clearing WhatsApp's storage data on your device are the only ways to restore a backup. This way, the app resets to its default state. You can retrieve the backup after verifying your phone number.

Find WhatsApp backup in Google Drive using PC browsers

Open a web browser and visit drive.google.com .
Click Storage in the left sidebar.
Select Backups . You'll see your WhatsApp backup and the last time you updated it.
Double-click the backup to view the available options.
To permanently erase it, click Delete Backup .
Click Delete for confirmation.
Alternatively, select Turn Off to deactivate WhatsApp backups completely.
Click Turn Off for confirmation.
To disconnect WhatsApp from Drive, click the settings icon in the upper-right corner. Then select Settings .
Select Manage apps . Then scroll down to WhatsApp Messenger .
Click Options , then Disconnect from Drive .

Open Google Drive.

Past backups appear with a crypt14 or a lower-numbered extension and carry dates in the file name. For example, msgstore-2023-06-03.1.db.crypt14 . On the other hand, the latest backup appears with the crypt14 extension and doesn't carry a date, such as msgstore.db.crypt14 . Restoring older backups requires you to rename them, something you want to do to avoid losing data. Here's how to do it.

Find local WhatsApp backups on Android

Open your device's file manager.
Go to Internal Storage > Android > Media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp . This file path may look different on your device, especially if you use an SD card.
Select Databases . You'll see your encrypted chat histories in this menu. Close

Rename old local WhatsApp backups on Android

In the Databases menu, rename the latest chat backup. For example, change it from msgstore.db.crypt14 to msgstore.latest.db.crypt14 .
To rename a file, long press it. Then tap More and select Rename . Close
Rename the backup you want to restore to msgstore.db.crypt14 . Don't change if its extension has a lower number, such as crypt12.

You must reinstall WhatsApp or clear its cache and data before restoring your backup. The app doesn't provide buttons to do so after fully setting up your account. Both methods return WhatsApp to its original state, and you can set up your account from scratch.

It turns out RCS on iPhone is not as new as it seems

In amongst all the excitement about what Apple will or won’t announce on AI at WWDC, the other major iOS 18 change will be its biggest ever update to iMessage—the introduction of RCS. But there’s a major security issue that’s not being fixed.

RCS is the advancement on SMS that’s now the default protocol on Google Messages—Android’s iMessage equivalent. That’s won’t be the case on iPhone, and instead we expect RCS to run in parallel. Put simply, green bubbles will remain green, albeit they’ll be RCS and not just SMS, which means the functionality will improve.

But while RCS is end-to-end encrypted on Android, it won’t be on iPhone. Google’s encryption layer is a proprietary add-on, and there’s been no talk yet of Apple and Google collaborating to bridge iMessage to Google Messages encryption. Unless and until that changes, don’t switch your secured apps to this new cross-platform fudge.

Surprisingly, it turns out this won’t be the first time RCS has been on iPhone—it has been there for years. As unearthed by Android Authority , “while the vast majority of iPhone users will get their first taste of RCS messaging with the upcoming iOS 18 update, millions have already been (unknowingly) enjoying its capabilities.”

This isn’t iMessage, but Japan’s +Message app. As lauded at the time by RCS standard-setter, GSMA , “Japanese operators KDDI, NTT DOCOMO and SoftBank launched +Message using the GSMA’s RCS standards in May 2018, providing full interoperability and a common user experience for next-generation messaging.”

But despite this carrier backing, +Message has not really dented Line’s market lead in Japan, even with the 32 million users they reported by the end of 2022. Line has retained its top spot, with around three-times the user base. And, unsurprisingly these days, Line messages are fully end-to-end encrypted, with its “Letter Sealing.”

The company behind +Message’s back-end has been bullish on its position in Japan, describing +Message as “a single app that's downloadable for all three of the operators that we support there and we enjoy consumers utilizing the RCS service there both on Android and iOS operating systems.”

But it seems that carrier support for +Message might now start to shift towards Google Messages , in which case it will fall under the part-integration Apple is adding to iMessage, rather than a separate app that needs to be installed.

From a user perspective, though, there’s no reason to think this will make any larger a dent in Line’s user base in Japan. The challenge for Apple and Google is that the over-the-top messengers, such as Line and more obviously WhatsApp , are fully secured, seamless cross-platform, and thriving as regards user numbers.

It’s high time SMS on iMessage was replaced with a better alternative, and RCS is certainly that, but it doesn’t mean the update will push people to ditch their current, more secure go-to daily platforms.

Nate Rosenfield and Brian Howey are examining the power of sheriffs’ offices in Mississippi as part of The Times’s Local Investigations Fellowship . Jerry Mitchell is an investigative reporter who has examined civil rights-era cold murder cases in the state for more than 30 years.

Between vacation photos and cookout invitations posted on their private text thread, a group of Mississippi sheriff’s deputies who called themselves the Goon Squad traded pictures of rotting corpses and joked about rape and shocking people with Tasers.

They did it all in front of their supervisor, who often joined in the banter.

An encrypted WhatsApp group chat obtained by The New York Times and Mississippi Today provides a yearslong record of the day-to-day conversations of a patrol unit involved in terrorizing residents across a central Mississippi county for a generation.

The Goon Squad came to national attention last year after Rankin County sheriff’s deputies tortured two Black men in their home and shot one of them in the face, nearly killing him. Six officers, including three from the Goon Squad shift, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to federal prison in March.

An investigation by The Times and Mississippi Today last fall revealed that nearly two dozen residents experienced similar brutality when Rankin deputies burst into their homes looking for illegal drugs.

Most of the deputies in the chat have not been charged, and some have not been accused of violence or other illegal behavior. Several deputies said their comments were jokes and denied doing anything illegal. At least nine still work at the department.

The text thread, the contents of which have not previously been reported, shows that for years the deputies chattered routinely about ways to humiliate and brutalize criminal suspects.

Amid mundane messages about time-cards and vacation days, the deputies delighted in the violence they had witnessed and goaded one another to assault and shame people struggling with addiction or accused of crimes. They punctuated the chat with racist comments about Mexicans and memes denigrating women as sex objects, all in view of more than a dozen deputies who were part of the same unit and received the group texts.

In November 2019, the same year that the department came under review for three fatal shootings that involved Goon Squad members, the deputies discussed turning their work into a game: one point for every arrest. Deputy Cody Grogan asked the group how many points he would get if he shot someone.

“Depends if they die or not,” replied Lt. Jeffrey Middleton, the shift’s supervisor.

“They’ll die,” Deputy Luke Stickman wrote.

Mr. Grogan, who no longer works at the department, said in an interview that his text messages were “absolutely all jokes.”

“People that know me know that’s not going to happen. I’m not going to go out and shoot anybody,” he said.

Mr. Stickman, who left the department last year, did not respond to requests for comment. Carlos Tanner, a lawyer for Mr. Middleton, who is now in prison, declined to comment on his client’s behalf.

Deputies in the chat also discussed taking nude pictures of a woman they had arrested. They made plans to rough up people they disliked or suspected of crimes. They urged one another to shock people’s private parts with Tasers. One shared a video of a deputy defecating on someone’s bed.

When deputies encountered people who had died — by suicide, by homicide, in a car crash — they sometimes shared pictures of the bodies, compared states of decomposition or joked that they should have sex with them.

In May 2022, Deputy Zachary Cotton posted a picture of a man’s body found decomposing in Robinhood, an impoverished neighborhood of run-down trailers and makeshift shacks that deputies often targeted for drug raids.

“That’s hot,” Deputy Hunter Cook said in the chat.

“Poke him with a stick,” Lieutenant Middleton replied.

“5 bucks if you take a selfie with him with your arm around him,” Deputy Cook wrote.

Mr. Cook, who no longer works in law enforcement, said that while he was not proud of his texts, it is common for police officers to exchange off-color jokes about their work.

“We see dead bodies all the time,” he said. “That’s kind of how we deal with stuff.”

He also distanced himself from his colleagues accused of torturing people. “Had I known they were doing stuff like that, I probably wouldn’t have made jokes like that,” Mr. Cook said.

Deputy Cotton, who still works for the department, said he and his colleagues traded pictures of dead people out of curiosity, but did not share them outside of their chat group.

“It’s stuff that you just see on the job,” he said. “It’s not against the law. I didn’t make any vulgar comments about it.”

In a statement Wednesday, Rankin County Sheriff’s Department officials said they had been unaware of the Goon Squad nickname or deputies’ use of private chats until both were revealed in a Justice Department investigation last summer. They said the chat was an attempt to keep the Goon Squad name and illegal activity secret and that the department has since banned electronic communications between three or more deputies unless monitored by a supervisor.

WhatsApp encrypts messages, which protects users’ privacy. Messages sent through the app are not centrally recorded and therefore are difficult to obtain if users delete them.

The statement also said the department had reviewed body camera footage, complaints against deputies and other material. “Based upon this analysis, we are confident that the actions of our current employees are and will remain proper as they serve the citizens of Rankin County,” the statement said.

During court hearings in March , federal prosecutors noted that members of the group used WhatsApp to plan a 2023 raid during which they shocked Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker with Tasers, assaulted them with a sex toy and shot Mr. Jenkins in the mouth.

The department’s lawyer, Jason Dare, declined to say whether department leaders had requested copies of the group chat from deputies or Justice Department investigators.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey has said he was not aware of the allegations of violence against his deputies over the years and that he did not know about the Goon Squad moniker.

“I didn’t even realize that they called themselves that until last week,” he said during a press conference last August.

The chat shows that deputies working under Lieutenant Middleton began calling themselves the Goon Squad as far back as 2019. More than a dozen men — everyone who was assigned to the shift — participated in the chat, including Lieutenant Middleton, who reported directly to the sheriff.

In 2020, deputies exchanged messages about creating a challenge coin, a commemorative token commonly shared by members of a particular unit in the military or law enforcement. Lieutenant Middleton initially suggested that their coin feature images of a noose and a Confederate flag. They discussed how Sheriff Bailey would react, referring to him by his badge number, “1.”

“I’m not sure how 1 will feel about the goon squad,” Lieutenant Middleton wrote.

The final version of the coin, which the lieutenant gave to the deputies as Christmas gifts in 2022, pictured cartoonish gangsters and said “Lt. Middleton’s Goon Squad.”

“Merry Christmas Goons,” Lieutenant Middleton posted in the chat that year. He is now serving a 17.5-year prison sentence for his role in the January 2023 torture incident.

Many of the text messages come across as jokes. Some refer to specific arrests and suspects, but do not make clear whether deputies actually carried out the violence they discussed.

In 2022, deputies texted about roughing up a man arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

“Did you Tase him in the face!?” Hunter Elward wrote. Daniel Opdyke asked if they had shocked the man in the anus.

“All the neighbors were outside watching,” Deputy Cook responded in the chat, adding that if they had been in a more secluded area, the suspect would have “gotten more lovings.”

Former Deputies Elward and Opdyke are in prison after pleading guilty to the assault of Mr. Jenkins and Mr. Parker. Jeffery Reynolds, Mr. Opdyke’s lawyer, said he had been unable to immediately reach his client, “but obviously Tasing somebody in the anus is wrong and very disturbing.”

Mr. Cook said he texted in aggravation because the suspect was accused of abusing a child. “I didn’t do anything that was illegal or anything like that to him,” he said.

The violent acts that deputies discussed were similar to those reported by dozens of residents interviewed last year by The Times and Mississippi Today. Those residents said they had experienced or witnessed raids in which deputies restrained suspects or drove them to remote locations, then beat them, threatened to kill them or shocked them with Tasers in the face and genitals.

Many said the assaults had been directed by the department’s then-chief investigator, Brett McAlpin, whom federal prosecutors identified as the ringleader of the Goon Squad during his sentencing in March.

In 2020, the deputies texted about what to do to a man they suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run case.

Deputy Grogan offered a quote he attributed to the chief investigator.

“‘Nothing scares a man like kidnapping him’ — Brett McAlpin,” Deputy Grogan wrote.

“I’m down to make some bad choices,” Deputy Dustin Smith replied.

The deputies then joked about killing the man and burying him on Deputy Grogan’s property. Lieutenant Middleton suggested they dump the man’s body in nearby Jackson, Miss.

“They’ll never solve it,” he said.

In an interview, Mr. Grogan called his texts in the group chat “a poor decision” and said “I’ve never kidnapped anybody and I’ve never shot anybody.”

Deputy Smith, who still works for the department, declined to comment.

No one in the group, including the highest-ranking members, raised concerns in the chat about what was being said. In a 2020 text exchange, two deputies asked Lieutenant Middleton if they could beat a man they believed had exposed himself to women at local gas stations.

“That’s fine just justify it good in your report,” Lieutenant Middleton replied.

In 2022, Deputy Stefan Williams shared a video of an officer defecating on someone’s bed. Several deputies replied, appearing to reminisce about the incident.

“I was laughing so hard that day I couldn’t hardly breath,” Deputy Jeremiah Jordan said.

“Good times, lol.” Deputy Williams wrote.

“I wonder if that crack head lay his ass back on that bed?” Deputy Jordan replied.

Department records indicate that Mr. Williams no longer works as a deputy in Rankin County. He did not respond to requests for comment. Deputy Jordan, who was promoted to lieutenant, did not respond to requests for comment.

In July 2021, after Deputy Zachary Cotton reversed several overdoses using the opioid blocker Narcan, some deputies harangued him for saving the people who had overdosed.

The following month, they took turns ridiculing a woman who had tried to bite a jailer.

“Some people just need a bullet to the head,” Deputy Stickman wrote.
