A Guide to PowerPoint-Karaoke

08.15.19   •  #fun #ppt #game.

When hearing the Word Karaoke, most people immediately think of being on stage and singing to a background track. With PowerPoint, we associate work, school, meetings and workshops – rather professional matters. But mix the two things together and you get one of the funniest, most entertaining games ever – PowerPoint Karaoke.

What is PowerPoint Karaoke?

…may be the first question you ask. Well, PowerPoint-Karaoke (also known as Battle Decks) is a game with very simple rules: The presenter gets on stage and must convincingly present a deck of PowerPoint slides he has never seen before. The main purpose is to have as much fun as possible. We listed further instructions in the paragraph below.

Watch this very funny example of Kate McKinnon doing PowerPoint Karaoke:

  • The presenter must not see the slides before presenting them. All slides have to be presented in order and it is not allowed to skip slides.
  • When all the slides have been presented, the presentation is over. Alternatively, you can set a time limit.
  • The rules for the slides are not defined very strictly. They can either be about a “regular” topic (e.g. on a country, an animal, a hobby), a complex topic (e.g. difficult concepts of science), or about nothing at all really (just a bunch of nonsense-slides open for creative interpretation).

Once all the presenters are done with their presentation, it is time to crown a champion. You can decide the winner based on the following points:

  • Content and Credibility
  • Posture and Gesture
  • Entertainment/Fun
  • (Optional) Withdraw points for not finishing in time

An easy way to evaluate the best presentation is to let the audience vote in a live poll via SlideLizard. Download it here: slidelizard.com/download

How can I play it?

Even if there is no pub or bar near you that offers public PowerPoint-Karaoke events, you can always get your friends and family and have a fun evening playing. You can either make presentations for each other, try out the ones we made down below or look for more on the internet. You can show the slides on a TV or a bigger computer screen. The at-home-or-with-friends-version is definitely a great option, because you do not have to get on a stage and you’re with people you know all the time – which makes it a lot less embarrassing and may get shy people to participate.

Making it even more entertaining

The game gets even better by making it interactive and integrating the audience. Polls are perfect for doing so! SlideLizard offers a great tool for creating them. Here's an example:

What does every Start-up need?

  • A coala bear
  • 2437 litres of rum
  • A submarine

Now it's time to let the audience vote. In the end, the presenter has to explain the right answer.

In order to get you started right away, we have prepared three creative presentations for your next game of PowerPoint karaoke! Each slide deck contains two additional suggestions for live polls which you can add with SlideLizard to make the game even more fun!

At many hackathons and events around the world, we play a game that's known as Slideshow Karaoke . It also goes by the name Powerpoint-Karaoke or Battle Decks. Basically, an audience watches a person present a random set of slides that they have never seen before, often with the slides being controlled by someone else. It's a lot of fun, with plenty of laughter and improvisation.

However, finding good slides is difficult. This repository should hopefully solve that.

List of Slides

Contributing.

Thanks for wanting to contribute. There's just a few rules that we have for slides in this list:

  • They must not violate the Major League Hacking Code of Conduct .
  • They must have at least 15 slides, and no more than 75 slides.
  • They must not contain more than 75% text. Text-heavy slides don't work.
  • They must be available for public use. A good place to find slides is Slideshare .
  • When creating a PR to add your slide to the list, please add them alphabetically.

What makes a funny set of slides for Slideshow Karaoke?

  • Repetition. Lack of this is too much to follow and often not funny.
  • Very opinionated. Slides that have a lot of opinion (i.e. programming language) are 💯.
  • Nostalgia. When slides try to incorporate childhood TV shows into modern concepts, that's always a hit.
  • Foreign slides. People can't present slides that they only half-understand 😎
  • Memes. Why not.

PowerPoint Karaoke: Have Fun and Improve Your Presentation Skills

October 3, 2014 / Blog, PowerPoint ideas, PowerPoint Tips, Presentation Powerpoint, powerpoint karaoke, presentation delivery, presentation skills

I’m sure you’ve tried karaoke to wind down with colleagues after a long day of work. But have you ever thought to give PowerPoint Karaoke a try?

In PowerPoint Karaoke, participants are challenged to take the stage and deliver a presentation based on slides they’ve never seen before. The rules are pretty simple. Instead of singing power ballads, participants will need to make sense of random slides, and connect it to an assigned theme. They will also be restricted by a time limit. The results are usually pretty crazy and absurd. To give you a clue, here are some slides from a PowerPoint Karaoke event held in Seattle last 2012:

As you can probably imagine, PowerPoint Karaoke can lead to some pretty hilarious situations. The best speakers are those who are willing to step out of their comfort zone, ready to have fun while practicing their improvisation skills. It’s the perfect game for anyone looking to deliver better and more engaging presentations.

Getting started:

If you’re ready to throw your own PowerPoint Karaoke party, here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Build your PowerPoint decks beforehand. Be creative and go for slides that will challenge the participants. If you want, you can find presentations online and edit them for your use. Five to seven slides per deck will do.
  • At the event, let the participants draw for their speaking order and assigned theme. This will give everyone an even playing field, and prevent people settling for topics they’re familiar with.
  • You can decide whether you want speakers to control their own deck, or have the slides auto advance.
  • Set a time limit that’s no more than 5 minutes.
  • Decide on a winner by letting the audience vote. You can prepare forms, or just ask them to choose their favorites by show of hands.

PowerPoint Karaoke is a great activity to try with your colleagues. Gather a small group in a room and start having fun. Urge everyone to test their improvisation abilities and improve their presentation skills.

PowerPoint Karaoke

What's this all about? ... PowerPoint Karaoke , also known as Battledecks or Battle Decks , is an improvisational activity in which a participant must deliver a presentation based on a set of slides that they have never seen before. Its name is derived from Microsoft PowerPoint, the world's most popular presentation software, and karaoke, an activity in which a performer sings along with a pre-recorded backing track. The effect is intended to be comical, and PowerPoint Karaoke can be considered a form of improvisational theatre, or a type of Theatresports game. So you went to some event and they did PowerPoint Karaoke and it was tons of fun. Now you are sober and want to do it again with another group of people. Its your lucky day - here's a collection of some good decks.

Instructions

Find some volunteers willing to present. Then get several slide decks, each with 8-10 random slides (you can build your own slide decks  or find examples online). Have each volunteer give a presentation, having never seen the slides before. When all have presented, a winner can be chosen by panel or popular vote.

Tips for running this activity online

  • A simple activity to run online - so long as you have everyone on webcam and present in your video conferencing tool, this one is run in very much the same way as a live workshop!
  • Pre-create one or more slide decks and present them to your group via screen share. It’s good to keep control of the slides yourself so you can move things along when needs be.

This is a brilliant activity for presentation or speaking skills trainings. I suggest to keep the amount of text on the slide low, so participants don't have to spend time understanding the slide. Also works really well with images only for story-telling.

Talk Generator

TalkGenerator is an AI for automatically creating coherent slideshow based on a single topic suggestion.

Table of Contents

Improv game, online demo, inner working, input: "pear", input: "hotel", input: "cat", related papers, talks about talk generator, what people say about talk generator, projects related to talk generator.

This generator was built for the improv theatre game Improvised TED talk (also called PowerPoint Karaoke ) . In this game, a performer improvises a presentation using an unseen slideshow . Usually, when this game is played , the slideshow is made beforehand by another human. The slides are thus not related to the topic the audience suggested for the talk should be about. Our TalkGenerator solves this by automatically generating a slideshow related to the audience suggestion on the fly.

The talk generator can be used without installation on talkgenerator.com .

Screenshot of talkgenerator.com

This generator solves this problem by quickly generating an entire slide deck based on a single topic suggestion, usually chosen by the audience. The generator uses many different templates on many different levels and scrapes tens of data sources to find correctly flavored images to create a diverse and appropriate PowerPoint presentation about the topic.

A schematic overview of the algorithm. A topic is expanded into a sequence of related topics by walking a knowledge base graph. These topics are turned into slides by slide generators. The order of the slide generator is weighted randomly for every slide position.

In our evaluation , we found that people seemed to prefer the generated slides over human-created random slide decks. This is likely due to the link with the audience suggestion and the generator following good practices.

The Ultimate Guide to Hosting a Powerpoint Karaoke Event

If you’re thinking about hosting a Powerpoint Karaoke game, you probably have questions. “Will everybody have a good time?” “How do I make sure it’s a hit?”

In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to put on a successful Powerpoint Karaoke event. We’ve surveyed hundreds of people who have organized these events and collected their experiences… both what worked, and what didn’t. Let’s see what they learned and use their lessons to plan the perfect event.

Before the event

You’ll want to make sure you have reserved a space that has the equipment you need to play. For most Powerpoint Karaoke games, that includes:

  • A large display (like a screen and projector) for displaying the slides
  • A computer that runs presentation software (like Microsoft Powerpoint , or Keynote )
  • A microphone and amplifiers, if the room is large

It’s best to test out the technology before your event, to make sure the slides are loading and everything is displaying properly.

You’ll also want to estimate how many people will be attending, so you can prepare enough seating for the audience. Powerpoint Karaoke really shines when there’s a good-sized audience. Make sure everybody will be able to both see the slides and hear the speaker.

Schedule your game for a time when people will be relaxed and loosened up:

“We added Powerpoint Karaoke as a fun option during our conference lunch break. It was a hit.” Cheryl L., Social Media Tulsa
“Do it at night, after drinks. We did ours as part of Creative Mornings, which means IT’S THE MORNING. People are going to work right after. It’s not the right time for crazy and absurd. Crazy works better after work, or at night, or following a happy hour where everyone is midway through letting off steam after a long day. Mornings mean people are going to work afterwards, they’re charging up, not winding down.” Scott Berkun, scottberkun.com

Getting volunteers

You’ll need volunteers to present. If your group isn’t used to improv, you’ll want to find volunteers in advance. For this, you can create a sign-up sheet or have people submit an online form . You can also recruit people individually, though keep in mind that the best presenters might not be who you expect:

“What we found was that some of the most introverted looked forward to getting on the stage for PK.” Cheryl L., Social Media Tulsa

The total number of presenters can vary widely depending on your event; We’ve seen anywhere from three to ten presenters in a given round. You can always leave a presentation slot open, for anyone who wants to volunteer on the spot.

Preparing the slides

There was a common thread in the feedback we received. The slides you use matter :

“I recently hosted a Powerpoint Karaoke event at my improv club in high school. It was a huge hit. Here’s what worked and here’s what didn’t: What worked: Two [slides] following each other that were direct contradictions. What didn’t work (most of the time): slideshows thrown together with just a bunch of random photos with no thought put into it.” Noah P.
“This year, our guy who had been updating our slides lost his edge… next year (and yes, we will do it again), we’ll take more care in the slides and topics we prepare.” (excerpt from one response)

You have several options when organizing slides:

  • Buy pre-built decks
  • Search for decks online
  • Build your own decks

Buying decks costs money, but it can save you time and it reduces the risk of playing something untested.

For those building their own decks, there’s a lot you can do to make them shine. So much, that we spun off a separate guide with tips and advice for making your own Powerpoint Karaoke slides . It has everything we know about building good decks, so check it out if you want to do it yourself.

Also, it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. You can get pre-built decks online and then customize them with your own images. This is a great way to tailor the game to your audience.

During the game

Start by introducing the game and explaining the rules to the audience. Be enthusiastic! Your energy will be contagious and will set the tone for the rest of the game.

Presentations

When it’s time to present, give the speakers everything they need to succeed. Make sure they can easily see the slides, remember the topic, and control the presentation:

“Let speakers control the slides. If you kept the [time] limit, but let the speakers control when a slide advanced, they’d have slightly more power over delivery. That adjustment would dramatically improve their ability to make the slides work.” Scott Berkun, scottberkun.com
“Make sure you have the technology that the presenter can see the slide shown as well as the topic at the same time” Sherry S., The Ohio State University

Something as simple as writing the topic on a card the presenter can see, can go a long way.

Do your best to help the presenter know where they are in the presentation. Adding slide numbers, a “final-slide” indicator, or a one-minute time warning will help keep presenters oriented.

Powerpoint Karaoke works well as a competition. As such, there are several approaches to scoring the players and deciding on a winner. These include:

  • Audience applause: Have the audience applaud for each presenter once all presentations are done. The name that gets the loudest applause is declared the winner. This works best for large audiences.
  • A panel decision: This can be unanimous, majority vote, or based on a scoring rubric. This works for games of all sizes.
  • Audience vote: This works best if you have a system for collecting votes like index cards or an audience polling tool.
“I’ve created special scoring cards for each player to score the other player. People felt this made it more ‘professional.’” Stefan van der Vlies

You can also come up with a prize for the winner, like a trophy or small gift. Raising the stakes adds some excitement and incentives to participate.

Game Variations

There are many ways to adjust the game to meet your needs. Here are some ideas that others have tried:

Presenting with a partner:

“We had so much fun that they asked to do it again, and then again with a partner.” Jean H., Creative Business Innovations LLC
“When two people had to share the presentation it was very insightful to see that they each brought out different information and in different ways.” Keith H., IAM/Boeing

Presenting remotely:

“The event I ran was probably somewhat unusual in that it was being done with a distributed team, over a Google Meet call. I was running the slides via screen sharing, and the presenter would see those slides at the same time as everyone else.” Jon W., Neos

(for more on remote play, see our guide for playing remotely )

Timed presentations, tag teams and more:

“We have multiple ways… Costumes and building the costume the presenter chooses into the slides that they get. Timed presentations, where a timer is set to random lengths that no one knows and the slide changes when the bell dings. You have to move fast and make the presentation flow under pressure. Tag team the presentation! At any point the presenter can tag in a team member to pick up the rest of the presentation. This is especially funny when a leader pulls in a team member that was clearly not paying attention!” Coni T., Code Science

(On timed presentations: most presentation tools have settings for telling your slides to auto-advance after a given time period. Here are some instructions for setting that up in PowerPoint , Keynote , and Google Slides .)

Variations like these can add new challenges and keep the game fresh, especially if you’ve played the game before.

Powerpoint Karaoke is a great way to bring people together and have some fun. With a little preparation, you’ll create an experience that people will remember for years to come.

If you’ve organized your own game, let us know what worked well for you, and we’ll include your ideas above. 👍
