Why are all the books in the kindle store saying currently unavailable

Hi there, I’ve got a UK Kindle account and based internationally. Suddenly I can’t access any books as they all say currently unavailable. Nothing has changed in my settings.

all kindle books currently unavailable

For clarity, there is no such thing as a "Kindle account". You have an Amazon Account that has been used to purchase Kindle books.

To buy Kindle books from amazon.co.uk, you have to be in the UK, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands. Amazon will let you continue to buy Kindle books from amazon.co.uk for a short time while overseas but that's often just a couple of weeks.,

Depending on where you are, it may be worthwhile migrating your account to the .com store as that's the "mothership" for international sales.

I’ve been on a UK kindle account for 8 years from NZ. If they sell them here then maybe they should actually allow you to buy books. Will try the US account though, thanks!

if you're in NZ, you might try amazon.com.au as that Kindle Store covers NZ

Kindle Store Is Currently Unavailable: How to Fix [2023]

I had trouble accessing the kindle store recently and I surfed online to find a solution for this. I found several solutions to this problem.

So, I decided to write this article to condense all the solutions that I found after my research.

If your Kindle store is currently unavailable, check your internet, reboot your Kindle, and update your kindle to the latest firmware. If the issue persists, factory reset your Kindle. If the store is still unavailable, check your Kindle version as Amazon has stopped store access for the older generation Kindle devices.

Amazon Dropped Support for Older Generation Kindle Devices

Amazon Dropped Support for Older Generation Kindle Devices

Amazon, since 2022, has been restricting access to the Kindle store for older-generation Kindle devices.

This move will particularly affect devices that were released 10 years before and beyond.

Even though Amazon has not officially released a statement confirming the restriction of access to the Kindle store, Kindle users have reportedly received emails from Amazon stating the same.

The oldest Kindle that will be losing this feature is the second generation Kindle model launched internationally in October of 2009.

The most recent Kindle that will suffer the lack of store access is the fifth generation Kindle model introduced in September of 2012.

The list of Kindle devices that will lose this feature is given below:

  • Kindle Second generation International
  • Kindle DX International
  • Kindle Keyboard
  • Kindle Fourth generation
  • Kindle Fifth generation

Amazon could be ending store access to older Kindle devices as a consequence of hardware limitations. Hardware changes over the span of a decade have been drastic.

A software update might not be able to close this gap which could mean that modern security requirements are difficult to be met for old-generation Kindles for purchasing eBooks.

There are also reports of Amazon possibly ending support for MOBI and AZW formats for Kindle eReaders and replacing them with EPUB files.

So, we can expect a software patch around the end of the year that renews file formats and officially adds EPUB support.

Even if you have one of the above-mentioned devices, your Kindle will not be completely redundant. You can still add eBooks to your Kindle.

You can access Amazon.com and purchase eBooks from the website using a web browser on any device. These eBooks as usual are sent to your Kindle.

You can also download eBooks from other sites and sideload them onto your Kindle via email or using a USB.

If you are one of the Kindle users affected by this policy update, check your email inbox.

Amazon has attached an offer along with the notice to attract customers towards updating their old Kindles to newer versions.

Reports claim that Amazon is attaching a discount code offering a 30% discount on the purchase of a new eReader along with the email.

There are also refurbished Kindles up for sale on Amazon.

They are also offering 3 months of free access to Kindle Unlimited service upon purchase of a new Kindle eReader.

Here's a video walkthrough from us that'll help you troubleshoot the "kindle store is currently unavailable" issue,

Force Reboot the Kindle

Rebooting your Kindle device is a quick solution that can fix most of your issues.

An issue most Kindle users face is when the display shows the prompt "The Kindle Store is currently unavailable" and on pressing 'OK' the screen freezes.

If this issue persists even after you have tried powering your Kindle on and off and your Kindle screen is still frozen, you might have to try force rebooting your Kindle device.

This issue could be because the software running on your Kindle has been locked up. To reset this, you need to do a force reboot of your kindle device.

Kindle Power Button

To execute this, press and hold the power button on your Kindle for 40 seconds.

Kindle Restarting

Do not press any buttons after these 40 seconds and wait for a minute for your Kindle to power back up.

In case the issue has not been resolved, try this solution at least three times and each time give your Kindle device a minute to power back up.

If your Kindle is still running into this issue, try charging your device for 15 minutes and try this method at least twice again.

Check the Internet Connection

A frequent issue that users face when having trouble connecting to the Kindle store is network troubles. To make sure that your issue is not due to your network, try the following tips.

Try restarting the router. To restart your router, turn off the router using the power off switch on the back of your router or just unplug your router.

Wait for 30 seconds to one minute and power your router back up. Try connecting your Kindle to your network and check if you have access to the Kindle store.

Check if your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi. It is worthwhile to check if your Kindle device is recognizing and connected to your Wi-Fi network.

To do this, either swipe down from the top of your screen or go to Menu.

Kindle All Settings tab

Navigate to 'All Settings' and then 'Wireless'. Further, select 'Wi-Fi networks' and find your network in the list of available ones.

Kindle WiFi Change

Once you have found your network, tap on it and type in your network password.

Then, press 'Connect'. Make sure your Wi-Fi network has good signal strength to ensure proper connectivity.

In case you are using a 3g or 4g/LTE network, make sure you try connecting to the store on a Wi-Fi network to make certain that the issue is not due to a network connectivity problem.

It's recommended to turn OFF the network if you want to save battery life since you can use Kindle Offline too.

Update Kindle to the Latest Available Firmware

Kindle users face store connectivity problems when their device is not currently running the latest software.

Updating your Kindle software might resolve your store accessibility issue.

By updating your device, you get to make the Kindle faster, hence resolving issues like Kindle being slow.

Kindle updates come with security overhauls, bug fixes, and several streamlining or optimization features.

Therefore it is worth it to make sure that your Kindle device is running the latest available firmware.

Kindle devices generally update automatically.

However, if it has been a while since you have connected to a Wi-Fi network or if you have been using your device in Airplane mode, your Kindle device might be running on old firmware.

To check if there are any updates available for your Kindle device, navigate to the Home screen and tap 'Menu' and go to 'Settings' or swipe down from the top of your screen and tap on 'All Settings'.

Tap on the 'Device options' icon and navigate to 'Advanced Options'.

Kindle Advanced options

If this option is greyed out, it means that your Kindle is running the latest firmware and no further updates are available.

Kindle Update your Kindle option grayed out

If the option 'Update your Kindle' is available, first plug your Kindle into a power source and then tap this option.

A prompt will pop up to which tap 'OK' to confirm the update.

Then the message 'Your Kindle is updating' will be displayed on the screen. Once the update is complete, your Kindle device will restart automatically.

Leave your device plugged in to let Kindle index your books.

Factory Reset the Kindle

Factory resetting your Kindle is a final measure to try if you have exhausted all other troubleshooting solutions.

However, most issues are cleared through a factory reset, including the notorious Kindle Store won't connect issue.

The reason why a factory reset should be the last solution is that it resets your device to its initial configuration.

This action will wipe out all your personal preferences, settings, downloaded books, passwords, media, and apps on your Kindle.

To do a factory reset, swipe down from the top of your screen to access 'Settings' or navigate to the Home screen and press 'All Settings'.

Kindle Reset option

Go to 'Device Options' and select ' Reset'. If you are using an older Kindle, select 'Reset Device' again.

A prompt will pop up to confirm your choice to reset your Kindle. Tap 'Yes' to confirm your choice.

Your device will reboot and start up with its initial factory configuration. Once you have factory reset your Kindle, your device is deregistered from your Amazon account.

In order for you to access your books and other media, you need to register again to get access to your Amazon account.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

Amazon's Kindle is a one-of-a-kind product with incredible backend support and a huge user base.

As a result, we can always expect solutions to bugs and errors with Kindle devices.

Moreover, they provide incredible access and support to a wide range of books through their Amazon store.

The decision to restrict older devices from accessing the store in hindsight will be a practical and constructive decision as any user would agree that transaction security triumphs over all other concerns.

Hopefully, some of the solutions offered in this article have helped resolve the issues that you are facing with your Kindle device.

Have a good day!

Is Your Book Suddenly “Unavailable” on Amazon? Are They Up to Their Old Tricks Again?!

March 16, 2017

Is Your Book Suddenly “Unavailable” on Amazon? Are They Up to Their Old Tricks Again?!

My Amazon listing says this in the right side buy box:

Save an extra $13.96 (74%). Buy the Kindle Edition instead.

FREE Shipping for Prime members once available.

Usually ships within 1 to 2 months.

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Gift-wrap available.

Why are they telling people that it takes 1 to 2 MONTHS to ship???!!! I have notified them that this is an error and they say they’ve contacted my publisher but they did NOT. It is confusing my buyers!

A – Back in 2008, Amazon started making phone calls to print on demand publishers, threatening to remove their buy buttons from Amazon.com if the publisher didn’t start paying Amazon to print their books. This meant the book would not be available for purchase directly through Amazon. Readers would only be able to purchase copies through re-sellers who had listings on Amazon. Buyers want to be able to buy directly through Amazon because they don’t know those re-sellers. Buyers trust Amazon, a name they do know.

At BookLocker.com , we received the same threatening phone call from Amazon. We subsequently filed a class-action lawsuit against Amazon for (alleged) federal anti-trust violations. Our main concerns were: 1. Amazon’s printing division’s prices, and 2. The quality of their books  was not acceptable to us. After a federal judge refused to dismiss the case, Amazon quickly settled our case, and paid our attorneys $300K. You can read more about our case, and the events leading up to it, HERE .

Things quieted down after that but Amazon appeared to be happy because many of our competitors had caved to Amazon’s demands, and signed their contract before our case ended up in front of a federal judge.

Over that period of time, Amazon was sending orders for print on demand books directly to Ingram’s printing division, which would then print and ship the book directly to Amazon’s customers, even using an Amazon.com return address label. (And, that printing division and Ingram recently confirmed to us that Amazon still does that for many orders.) Ingram was even shipping some books published by traditional publishers directly to Amazon’s customers. Everything was working great and customers were getting their books very quickly. Amazon didn’t even need to lay a finger on those books. The transactions were automated and Amazon was earning money on copies sold even when they didn’t need to warehouse or ship books.

Fast-forward a few years and, now, there are MANY more publishers and even more print on demand printers offering their services to authors. Obviously, Amazon isn’t printing books for all of them.

There is speculation in the industry that Amazon has found another way to try to get publishers and authors to use their printing services.

In a nutshell, Amazon is:

Listing print on demand books either as unavailable or “out of stock,” available only through third-party resellers, or available but with very long lead times that don’t accurately reflect how quickly buyers can really obtain that book, even if Amazon orders it from the distributor. For example, it does NOT take 1-2 months to obtain a copy of a print on demand book! Rather, it takes just a few days.

Amazon’s latest shenanigans have been affecting a variety of print on demand (and other) books for quite awhile now. Based on numerous reports we’ve received, this appears to be what’s happening when an author or publisher notices their book can no longer be purchased directly through Amazon (which is called “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Get it by (insert date here – some are available in a little as 2 days).”

Authors hear from their readers that people can no longer buy the book directly from Amazon. When those authors complain directly to Amazon, Amazon offers up a variety of excuses, including everything from “your publisher needs to open an Amazon account,” to “we can’t obtain any copies of your book from Ingram (the distributor),” and more. With print on demand books distributed by Ingram, those excuses aren’t flying at all. Ingram is, of course, not only denying the books are unavailable, but they are also happy to provide screenshots of their system, proving the book is indeed available. Publishers can simply login to their ipage account at Ingram to see the book’s availability. Of course, the same automated Ingram feed about the print on demand books goes to other stores as well, like BarnesandNoble.com, and those books are listed as available on those sites. Amazon is the only retailer we know of that’s altering the listing info. for print on demand books.

When confronted with proof (two screenshots) that one book in particular most definitely WAS available through Ingram AND their printer, Amazon continued to argue their case, but backed down when they were asked for a screenshot of what they were seeing on their end, claiming the information was proprietary. Magically, that book’s buy button appeared once again a week later, after the author got upset. During the discussions, Amazon pitched their printing division to that author. Their actions backfired. The author was so upset about the whole scenario that he has no interest in doing business directly with Amazon.

Based on reports from numerous publishers and authors, this appears to be what’s happening now with Amazon’s “availability” issues:

1. A new print on demand book goes up for sale and the buy button on Amazon works just fine.

2. The buy button disappears a few days later, and is replaced by a variety of different things, like:

* Temporarily out of stock. Order now and we’ll deliver when available. * Only 2 left in stock. Ships from and sold by (name of a third-party reseller on Amazon). * 2 Used from $x.xx; 1 New from $x.xx (also from resellers on Amazon – and those “used” copies aren’t always used; in fact, many don’t even exist yet !) * 10 used & new offers (all from resellers on Amazon) * Usually ships in 1 to 2 months * Usually ships in 1 to 3 weeks * Usually ships in 1 to 4 weeks * Usually ships in 5 to 6 weeks and * Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Get it by (2 days from now). FREE Shipping on eligible orders. (Some books remain available through Amazon with this listing. Perhaps they have been inadvertently overlooked. Who knows?)

Here’s the beef. All of the books I just looked up on Amazon.com to copy/paste the text above have the exact same publisher, printer, and distributor. And, Amazon can still have that printer and distributor ship those copies directly to Amazon’s customers, with 24-hour turn-around! Amazon’s availability quotes are incorrect and ridiculous and authors and publishers alike are FURIOUS because this IS affecting their book sales.

3. Publisher/author complains to Ingram’s printing division (the largest Print on Demand printer in the world).

4. Printer opens “a ticket” at Amazon.

5. Amazon appears to fix a very small percentage of those book listings very quickly after receiving those tickets, but appears to ignore most of the other ones. We know of “unavailable” books that were initially reported to Amazon seven months ago, and subsequently reported three more times over the following five months, and they still haven’t been “fixed” at Amazon. If Amazon fixes one book, and if that book has the same publisher, printer, and distributor as all the others, why hasn’t Amazon fixed ALL of those books?

6. Unfortunately, the printer does not appear to follow-up on all these old tickets and only resubmits them if the publisher and/or author complains again. We’re not sure what’s going on there but I imagine they have tens of thousands of ticket open with Amazon. They would likely need to hire more employees just to keep up with the incorrect listings on Amazon.

7. Some books that do get their buy buttons back can lose them again a few days or weeks later.

8. The author gives up on the publisher, printer, and distributor, and contacts Amazon directly.

9. Amazon’s usual response is to incorrectly blame the problem on the distributor or publisher, saying they can’t get the book from the publisher (not true – that printer is under contract with Amazon to print/ship the books to Amazon in 24 hours), that the publisher needs to open an account with Amazon (which is not needed since Ingram, the largest distributor, which ships millions of books to Amazon each year, also carries the book), that the distributor has the book listed as “unavailable” (and Amazon continues to insist this even when provided with screenshots from Ingram’s system showing the book is available), and more.

10. In some cases, Amazon pitches their own printing division to the author as an alternative. Sound familiar??

11. When the author signs up for an “Author Central” account (which they might think they need to do to complain to Amazon), they start receiving emails pitching Amazon’s printing division (which has numerous complaints  posted about it online). Incidentally, Amazon is rolling out a “new” printing service that many industry folks believe is just an attempt to rebrand their old one. (If I had that many complaints about me online, I’d want to rename and rebrand myself, too!)

OLDER BOOKS

12. Some older books are still available on Amazon. Perhaps the listings are too old or too much trouble for Amazon to jiggle them around.

13. Some other older books lose their buy buttons just like new books.

14. Go back to #3 above.

PLAYING WITH DISCOUNTS

Some publishers have tried increasing their discounts on some of their books while others have not. They think giving Ingram and, subsequently, Amazon, a bigger chunk of each sale will change their book’s availability on Amazon.

Some books with new, higher discounts will remain unavailable while some will be made available once again. There is no noticeable pattern on which books Amazon will flip the switch on or not. The reactivated buy button on Amazon may have nothing at all to do with the initial discount, nor the changed discount. There is no set discount rate that automatically makes Amazon turn the buy button back on again.

Some books that don’t have changed discounts will suddenly pop up as available once again (this seems related to how loudly the publisher or author screams at Ingram and/or Amazon). Some authors have reported that purchasing copies of their book from Amazon (despite the long lead times) and/or Amazon’s resellers have spurred Amazon to make the book “available” through Amazon once again.

There’s no rhyme or reason to the process Amazon is using to remove the active buy buttons, nor for re-adding them, nor for leaving some old books alone vs. removing the buy buttons from other older book pages on their site. Neither Ingram nor Amazon is providing real, correct information to publishers or authors about what’s happening behind the scenes. Based on correspondence I have received from some employees at Ingram’s printing division, they are NOT happy with Amazon, which is a no-brainer since they’re the ones fielding the first round of complaints from publishers and authors, and they’re the ones processing countless “tickets” with Amazon support, with very little success.

I recently asked Ingram for an official statement about the situation that we and other publishers can give to authors about this situation. They stated they are under contract with Amazon to print/ship books to Amazon in 24 hours and that Amazon does still have the printer/Ingram print/ship books directly to Amazon’s customers. Amazon chooses where each order will be shipped.

Obviously, Amazon and Ingram are still butting heads. Perhaps legal action is brewing.

In the meantime, each time Amazon changes a book’s availability, that increases the chances that an author is going to complain directly to Amazon. And, once that author is in contact with Amazon, Amazon can then pitch their printing division to the author, thus bypassing the publisher (and Ingram) altogether.

What do you think? Has Amazon found a new way to play the “turning off the buy button” game with authors and publishers? They didn’t threaten to remove the buy buttons. They just did it, with no warning. And, now they have a way to contact those authors directly, opening the possibility of removing the publisher and Ingram from the picture entirely. And, if they are successful, then Amazon gets the printing business for that book.

On a final note, another publisher I know reported receiving the “switch to CreateSpace or else” phone call in 2016. Hmmm….

What are your thoughts on this situation? First, please check your book on Amazon. If you see these problems, immediately contact your publisher AND Ingram. Then, please contact me HERE  with your comments. We will not publish our name on WritersWeekly (unless you want us to). I’d REALLY like to hear from an Amazon employee or two but I know the chances of that happening are virtually impossible. REPEAT: We will not publish your name on WritersWeekly.

ONE AUTHOR’S EXPERIENCE:

I just came from your page, ‘Is Your Book Suddenly “Unavailable” on Amazon? Are They Up to Their Old Tricks Again?!’ YES, they are! The first book of my (title removed) series is listed as ‘Temporarily out of Stock’ on Amazon. That’s strange (again), since (name removed) IS the publisher of the first title, and (Ingram’s printing division, Lightning Source) DOES print books for us. I tried to phone their Customer Service Center (866.216.1072) — only to find out — they are NOT ACCEPTING my ‘kind of calls’. What exactly does that mean?

Today (3-16-2017) I get an automated reply that they are having ‘technical’ issues and can only respond to certain general questions. Anything specific— call back later. OK…so I did…just now.

I got a customer service rep who, the moment she found out what my complaint was, tried to get on a ‘chatty’ first name basis with me. That didn’t work out for her so she tried to transfer me ‘up the line’. Now I am on hold for 10+ minutes……zzzzzzzzzzz

While I wait,I wonder why people are so stuck on Amazon? Barnes and Noble have the books listed as ‘In Stock’ and their shipping is by far and away much cheaper. I actually asked people in our Facebook group to forget Amazon from the beginning, or cancel their orders and go to B&N.

Ah Ha — persistence paid off –a human being! Now the man claims not to know Lightning Source. The name ‘CreateSpace’ just came up and I just told the man that Amazon could take and #@%& CreateSpace, and don’t send them to me after this call is finished! Now he doesn’t know how to solve the problem of the ‘Out of Stock’ title. He just said, “Where am I going to send this? If it were as easy as CreateSpace…..”

That comment died quickly. Now I am in a ‘holding pattern’ (the Black Hole I fear) while he runs off to the ‘john’ for all I know. He finally returned to the phone.

“Take it up with Author’s Central,” he told me, “We can’t fix their problems.”

“Oh, but the problem is with Amazon — not Lightning Source or Ingram,” I replied. “Well, I can’t help you,” he said and that ended the call.

So, in the end, the book is still ‘Temporarily out of Stock’, even though Lightning hasn’t run short of paper to print on, and the entire Ingram shipping department isn’t grounded. This is the blow-by-blow of what just now happened to me (3-16-2017 @5:45 pm).

Update: 3-25-2017

They are still listing (title removed) as ‘Temporarily out of Stock’, but ONLY in the USA (NOT in Canada, France, or Germany). So, a call to Amazon’s Customer service had no impact. The ‘CreateSpace ploy’ is still being touted as ‘the solution’ for all ‘non-traditional publishers, according to Amazon. If you do get into a new litigation with the 900 lb gorilla, I will be pleased to be involved.

ANOTHER AUTHOR’S EXPERIENCE:

Amazon shows (title removed) as available only through third party resellers. When I contacted Amazon, they told me that Ingram has listed my book as out of print (which is not true – this author was provided with screenshots from Ingram and Lightning Source that his books were available and they continued to be available on other sites, like BarnesandNoble.com). Amazon has not responded to my latest email. Amazon will only talk to Ingram, and continues to insist that Ingram informed them that the book is out of print (Amazon has refused to send me proof, citing their privacy policy and unwillingness to expose their internal processes). Other than Kindle sales and third-party sales, I have sold no books for six weeks.

I received a phone call from Amazon just now, and they insist that Ingram fix the problem. They said it was probably a technical glitch that the Ingram management or technical people can solve. A again, this was not true – the author had already provided screenshots to Amazon proving the point.)

THE EMAIL COMMENT FROM AMAZON WHERE THEY PITCHED CREATESPACE TO THE AUTHOR:

I understand that this is frustrating and we want to get this corrected as quickly as possible as you do too. The only other option is if you would like to publish this book through one of Amazon’s Print on Demand channels we can create a listing fulfilled by Amazon…

I just checked two books of mine that are only printed by Lightning. Both are available and ship quickly. I’m not sure I want to bother to check dozens of others. I hate having to police Amazon to catch what it should never be doing. Amazon is worse than babysitting a rambunctious two-year-old.

I did notice that Amazon lists one that’s only available in print as having a Kindle version. That Kindle version has a completely different publisher and lacks the enhancements I offer in my version. The two should not be joined on the same detail page. How typically Amazon—lazy, sloppy, and utterly devoid of integrity. A third-grader could be taught that a book by my Inkling Books has no relationship to one published by another publisher, in this case Titus Books. Is Amazon so stupid about books that it doesn’t know that different editions from different publishers can differ dramatically. Yes, from Bezos down Amazon really is that stupid—or more accurately it simply doesn’t care about the trouble it causes those in its supply chain. —— Anyone looking for a job they can run out of their home? I’d be happy to pay someone to monitor all my books on Amazon, checking them regularly, and letting authors and publishers like me know when these issues arise, so we can correct them.

I’ll do the numbers to see how good a business model that would be. Assume automation brings up dozens of book pages in separate browser tabs with no user effort. Assume it takes 15 seconds to check each page. That kind of work word can get dull, so assume a 10-minute break every hour. That’s 50 x 4 or 200 pages an hour. Work a normal seven hours a day at that and another hour emailing out notifications of issues to authors and publishers. That’s 1400 books checked each day. Assume twenty days of work a month to allow some vacation time. That means checking 28,000 book pages a month.

I was going to suggest charging $1/month for each book monitored, but that’d mean this lucky person would be earning $28,000 a month. Wow! Even those bogus Google postings don’t claim that much money. Making the checks weekly for that same $1/month means an income of $7,000 month—still amazing for work you can do from your kitchen table while cooking, minding the baby, and not having to fight a long commute.

I think you’re seeing the marvelous economics of this. Change the per-book charge to a mere ten cents for each check and this monitoring service would still draw in $2800 a month. What author wouldn’t pay far more than a dime per book per month to be spared the bother of tracking Amazon for any blunder or trickery the company might do? And the person doing this would become an expert at telling authors how to make Amazon do the right thing. They would be providing a helpful service, and one they could do from almost anywhere. They could also spot scheming like that Angela suggests above.

Anyone out there interested in starting such a business? Booklocker might even jump start the idea, offering it as a service to their authors and opening it up to the rest of us—particularly to me. I’d love to have the peace of mind this would offer.

–Mike Perry, Inkling Books

One of the Kindle’s greatest strengths is its ability to store an enormous number of books, so you can take your entire library with you wherever you go. It’s so slim and light, in fact, that you’ll never have to go anywhere again without something to read. But if you buy a new Kindle device or install the Kindle app on your phone or tablet, how do you get to your library of Kindle titles? It’s super easy—here’s what you need to know.

Your library of books and documents is easy to get to on your Kindle—you just need to find the home page. If your Kindle is already in a book, just tap anywhere along the top of the screen. You should see a drop-down menu appear with a variety of options like font, bookmarks, and search. On the left side, you should see Home . Tap that.

Now you’re on the home page. In the From Your Library section, you can see some of your most recently opened titles. Or tap the Library tab at the bottom of the screen to browse your entire library.

But what if you don’t see your Kindle library on your Kindle at all? The good news is that your library should automatically appear on your Kindle device and on any Kindle apps you've installed on devices like your phone or tablet. You simply need to sign in with the same Amazon account that you used to purchase the Kindle books to start with. For most people, that’s easy—you probably only have a single Amazon account, so use that to sign into the Kindle device or app.

But if your Kindle device is already connected to an Amazon account that’s not yours, you’ll need to deregister it from that account and then sign in with your own. To do that, go to your Kindle’s home page and tap the three dots at the top right of the screen. In the drop-down menu, choose Settings , then Your account . Finally, tap Deregister device and follow the instructions to remove the Kindle from that account.

After that, you can sign into your own Amazon account on that Kindle and you’ll see your own Kindle book library appear on the device.

How to troubleshoot your Kindle if it’s not showing your library

Most of the time, you’ll be able to see your library on your Kindle without any difficulty. But on those rare occasions when your titles aren’t showing up on your Kindle and you know you’re signed into the right Amazon account, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can take.

First, make sure your Kindle is connected to the internet—you should see a Wi-Fi symbol at the top of the home page. If you don’t, tap the three dots at the top right of the screen. In the drop-down menu, choose Settings , then Wi-Fi and Bluetooth , and ensure Airplane mode is off and the device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Then swipe down from the very top of the screen to reveal the Quick Actions menu. Tap Sync and let the Kindle ensure your data is up to date.

One last thing to try: restart your Kindle. Press and hold the power button until you see the pop-up Power window. Choose Restart and let the Kindle shut off, and then turn back on again. Sync the Kindle one more time. If none of those steps work, you might need to contact Amazon’s customer service .

Why can't I read my Kindle Book on my Kindle or Kindle reading app?

Some Kindle Books from your library (including many picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels) aren't supported on certain Kindle devices or reading apps.

To see whether a Kindle Book is incompatible with your device or app, look for a Kindle restrictions link under "Formats" on the ebook's details page.

loans

Note: If you set Kindle as your reading preference, select Having trouble? under the Kindle button to see the Read now in browser option.

Otherwise, you can return the ebook to the library so you can borrow and download it again in another format (like EPUB).

Kindle Oasis No Longer Available to Purchase in the US

December 14, 2023 by Nathan 17 Comments

Kindle Oasis Discontinued

Last month I posted about how it looks like Amazon is starting to phase out the Kindle Oasis , as some of the sub-models started to become unavailable, and now it’s gotten to the point where none of the Oasis models are available to purchase in the US.

That’s right. The Kindle Oasis is no longer available to purchase new on the main Amazon website. All versions on the Kindle Oasis landing page are listed as “currently unavailable”, with a note that says, “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.”

Amazon still has a few refurbished units listed, and the “International Version” still shows up when you run a search for it, but the international models cannot be purchased in the US.

The Kindle Oasis is still available from other Amazon websites, but not the main website in the US. They’re still selling it on Amazon UK , and it’s even on sale right now. They’re out of the gold ones but the silver versions are still available.

In Canada, the 8GB model is listed as “Temporarily out of stock”, but it can still be purchased, and the 32GB versions are available for immediate shipping.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some new ones periodically turn up on the main Amazon website in the US again, but at this point it clearly looks like the phase out process has begun. It’s not like they’re selling out because they’re so popular.

On Cyber Monday I checked the Kindle best sellers list to see which models were most popular while they were on sale, and the Kindle Oasis didn’t show up on the list until #17.

Hopefully Amazon will replace the Oasis with something new in early 2024, but at this point it’s hard to see them releasing another Oasis model after this last one has been on the market unchanged for nearly 4.5 years now. If they were planning on upgrading it they would have done so by now; no other Kindle has remained on the market for that long before.

That’s the end of Kindle for me. Scribe is huge and lacks buttons and Paperwhite is just aweful in every way. It’s a shame they discontinued the only premium ereader on the market.

How possible would be for Amazon phase out Oasis line, and introduce new line with at least 7-8″ color screen as premium product?

December 15, 2023 at 11:34 am

I have no idea. But my guess is color e-ink would make Kindle too expensive for masses, so I don’t think they’re gonna go there. Even though they made Comixology part of Kindle, so having a color Kindle that would be good for reading comic books would make a lot of sense to me…

“Paperwhite is aweful (sic) in every way”? What color is the sun in your world?

December 16, 2023 at 6:57 am

It’s my opinion. To me the design looks and feels very cheap, the whole device is one huge dust magnet, there are no page-turn buttons therefore no option to turn off touch while reading (which is what I do every time with Oasis so that I can wipe any dust or smudges anytime… Also there is not a one case I like, as the leather case has ugly texture, I like the smooth texture Oasis leather case have. There is absolutely nothing I like about Paperwhite. Which doesn’t mean it’s a bad device, it’s just not for me. Clearly many people have different opinion about it.

December 14, 2023 at 11:00 am

Not surprising, honestly. It seems clear the Scribe isn’t selling like they hoped at MSRP, and the discounts give too much price overlap to keep it in the lineup.

I’d be curious to know how the Sage sells for Kobo compared to the Ellipsa.

' src=

December 15, 2023 at 7:33 am

Honestly, I don’t think either sell very well, but I would bet the they sell more Sages than Elipsas. Just going off the reviews at Amazon, the Libra 2 has 3585 reviews and the Sage, which was released at the same time, only has 653 reviews. The Elipsa 2E only has 81 reviews, but it’s been on the market for less than a year.

Isn’t Boox Page with Kindle app a better buy at this point?

December 15, 2023 at 7:40 am

The Boox Page looks like a nice device but it’s hard to compare an Android ereader to a regular Kindle because the Kindle Android app isn’t designed for E Ink screens so it’s a lot more glitchy than the interface on a regular Kindle, and you have to sacrifice features like using custom fonts. Personally, I’d still chose the Oasis over any Android device if all I wanted to do was read Kindle books.

December 15, 2023 at 8:06 am

I have both Oasis 3 and Page and I read mostly in Kindle app on Page. It’s as fast as Kindle and the screen is light years ahead of Oasis’ one (sharpness, warm colour, way less glary). The only thing I miss as Nathan mentioned are costum fonts. But on the other hand Amazon’s fonts look better on Page. Specificaly Bookerly I hated on Oasis (it’s too bold and it drains my eyes) but it is much thinner and easily read on Page. So yes, I think Page is a good replacement for Kindle. Unless you read in bath, because it doesn’t have IP68. I use Oasis for that.

' src=

December 16, 2023 at 8:45 am

Not for me. I don’t like the Kindle app, too few customization options. OTOH I sold my Oasis 3 a while ago, as it was no longer satisfying for me either. I just read my Kindle books on my Kobos.

' src=

December 14, 2023 at 2:34 pm

That’s always kind of sad to see models drop off. I did pick up a refurbished Oasis in the last month or two plus I splurged with a 3 year warranty since I know some have battery issues I have a love/hate relationship with the Oasis. Although after my last hand surgery, I really needed page turn buttons that I could use with my left hand. I don’t really like swiping, like with my two Signature PWs. I have a remote page turner on one of them in the bedroom. The other one is in my office and the Oasis is in the living room.

I feel like I can’t really “leave” the Kindle world because I like having multiple e-ink devices that synchronize. I mean, I could buy more than one Kobo device, but… my Kindles all still work just fine.

' src=

December 15, 2023 at 1:01 pm

If you can an Android e-ink device, you can just use the Kindle app to read and keep those books synced.

Boox and Meebook both offer models with page turn buttons and updated specs, like usb-c.

December 15, 2023 at 9:46 am

I was afraid the Oasis would be discontinued so I bought a brand new one a couple of months ago. I already had an Oasis but the battery was not holding a charge as well as when new. Now I’m glad I did. I also own the Paperwhite Signature Edition and the Scribe but don’t really like either one. The Scribe is too big for reading and neither one has page turn buttons. I guess it’s time to switch to Kobo or Boox when I need a new eraser. Hopefully that won’t be for a long time.

' src=

December 15, 2023 at 12:04 pm

Love my Kobo Elipsa for reading during the day and then love my Kobo Libra for reading at night for the lighter weight and page turn buttons. I will never go back to Amazon Kindles. Kobo’s devices to me have a better feel and I really like their software.

' src=

December 15, 2023 at 4:01 pm

I have a kindle oasis and a kobo libra 2. When my oasis dies I will move to all kobo, unless amazon makes another device with page turn buttons. I love them, there’s extra room on the side of the device to hold one-handed, and the external page turner device is really awkward for me.

' src=

December 17, 2023 at 10:17 pm

I’ve been more or less resigned to the fact that Amazon is likely to stop making the Oasis completely. But I’m not going to buy a second one, I’ll just let my Oasis 2 die a natural death. With luck, it still has a few years before that happens. When it dies, I’ll likely replace with a Paperwhite, unless something better has taken the place of the Oasis line.

I just hope Kobo continues to make an 8″ device, as it’s really the perfect size for me.
