Use our free font generator to create cool and unique texts for Facebook, Instagram, or even for gaming usernames. Fontvilla converts normal text into fancy texts. Most of the time, we find an online font that we wish to use but numerous software does not contain that font. For instance, in the case of Photoshop, if we wish to use a font that is not already available, we have to find that fancy font online, download it, and only then can we use it in Photoshop.

Not only is this a hassle, but it also requires plenty of time and effort and if you decide to change your mind about the font then all your effort goes to waste. Just like every other problem, there is a solution to this too.

Fancy text fonts are the remedy to all your cool text woes. FontVilla is a fancy text generator that provides you with several cute fonts to write your cool text fonts in.

How Does FontVilla Work?

You can convert normal text into fancy text. Once you open FontVilla’s website, you type the text or letters that you wish to be in a certain fancy font generator. Once you are done typing, your typed text appears in all the fonts that the website has to offer. FontVilla is a custom font generator that is absolutely free of cost and minimizes the effort that one has to put in to get the desired cool fancy text.

More tools for Fancy text:

Fancy font generator:.

Once you have generated the text by text art generator , you simply have to copy it and paste it wherever you wish to use those fancy letters. The website comes with a variety of cute and cool fonts that can be used for different purposes.

On the contrary, usually what happens is that no matter how much you try to copy font and paste it elsewhere, if the software does not support that fancy font, it will automatically change the font to one that it already has. FontVilla basically does all your work for you and leaves only the copy and paste task for you.

Cool Text Generator

Not only does it work as a special font changer by changing your boring, standard font into a fancy one, it also lets you copy and paste numerous cute fonts. There is no limit to the number of times that you can use the copy and paste feature and it does not require you to pay extra either.

Furthermore, the font changer allows you to get the job done more quickly and efficiently while saving you both time and effort. By cool fancy text copy-paste, you do not even need to download any fonts to use in software such as Adobe Photoshop.

Fancy text generator

To wrap it all up:

  • Type the text you want in our Fancy Font Generator
  • You will see fonts below
  • Copy any font you want to use
  • Paste it where you want and enjoy it

How is Font Villa Different (Unicode)?

This text converter remains unique due to the fact that it has been written using Unicode text changer. Usually, such software is written using ASCII. Ascii basically lets you store anything that you write however it becomes useless when you cannot copy or paste it to your liking.

Instagram Fonts Copy & Paste

The lack of ability of Ascii to copy and paste font translator is exactly what makes Unicode 10 different. The Unicode font changer provides its valued users with the ability to copy and paste fonts, fancy letters , and texts anywhere they want without any alterations or restrictions.

The cool fancy text generator uses Unicode 10 in particular as it is a lot more advanced and provides the valued users with more choices and options than ever before. Unicode 10 also includes a number of emojis.

For instance, if you type “hello” in the fancy name and font creator, you can copy a fancy font version that also includes emojis and paste it anywhere you want. However, sometimes, there are exceptions.

Not all websites have the same Unicode as a result of which some fonts or emojis may not be pasted but that has nothing to do with the font generator itself, it has to do with the website or platform that you are trying to paste the special and messletters at.

Who can use this tool?

Nowadays, teens, millennials, and in fact even people belonging to the older age group wish to write crazy text generators and comments using unique, cool, and fancy fonts generator. They feel that this uniqueness would help them stand out and it would also help their captions look different. They can use this fancy word generator for Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc.

Stylish Text & Font Generator

Social Media platforms, especially Instagram, work with the number of likes and followers that you gain. Not just the pictures that you post but the captions that you add with them make all the difference. By using this cool text generator, people of all age groups can increase the number of likes and followers that they have on their social media.

It is with this tool that your social media presence can be transformed completely and shown to the outer world with a completely new and different look. A transformed and unique social media can not only help one get more likes and comments but can also positively contribute towards increasing their influence as it helps in creating captions and posts that are eye-catching.

The messletters generating tool is a great addition to one’s daily social media use. It is fun, unique, and very easy to use. This special tool lets its users enjoy creating their captions and posts even more by making them one of a kind, helping them grab more attention.

Often more than not, people get tired of boring fonts and texts and they want something special to make their captions stand out. Unfortunately, social media platforms and different websites only provide users with the option of using a standard, boring set of letters and fonts and there is no special or unique addition to them and nothing cool about them.

Even the emojis are limited mostly. It is with this special text generator that users can add their own unique and special touch to their posts making them look more personalized than ever which in return would allow them the ability to be able to connect better with their followers and readers considering that they are able to express themselves and convey their message better.

According to many resources this tool will help you gain more followers.

How to choose the best handwriting font in Word?

  • Purpose of Document: Consider the purpose of your document. A formal letter may require a neat, cursive font, while creative projects could benefit from more casual styles.
  • Readability: Ensure the font is legible, especially for longer texts. Some handwriting fonts can be difficult to read in smaller sizes or dense paragraphs.
  • Compatibility: Check that the font displays consistently across different devices and software versions to avoid formatting issues.
  • Font Pairing: If you're using multiple fonts in a document, make sure the handwriting font pairs well with others in terms of style and visual harmony.
  • Personal Style: Reflect your personal style or the tone of the document. A whimsical font might suit personal invitations, while a more restrained style is better for professional communication.

What are handwriting fonts usually used for?

  • Personal Correspondence: To add a personal touch to letters, thank-you notes, or family newsletters.
  • Creative Projects: Ideal for scrapbooking, homemade cards, or other DIY projects where a personal, handcrafted feel is desired.
  • Educational Materials: Used in teaching resources to make materials more engaging or to mimic traditional handwriting styles for learning.
  • Event Invitations: Popular for wedding invitations, event announcements, or party invites to give them a unique, customized look.
  • Branding and Marketing: Small businesses or brands may use handwriting fonts in their marketing materials to convey a sense of authenticity and personal connection with their audience.

How to work with Microsoft Word’s cursive, script or handwriting fonts

microsoft word logo primary resized

Microsoft Word offers a variety of cursive and handwriting fonts (or typefaces, which is the more accurate name for the different font styles), and they’re actually provided by the operating system rather than the Office version. For this story, we’ll discuss the cursive and handwriting fonts available in Windows 10.

Windows 10 currently has twenty Cursive (or “Script” typefaces), two Handwriting typefaces, three Blackletter typefaces, one Greek-Roman, and once Curly or Fancy typeface. Typefaces often fall into multiple categories; for example, Script and Handwriting typefaces are also classified as Calligraphy, Fancy, and Decorative. The Blackletter typefaces are also called Old English and Medieval; and the Greek Roman typefaces crossover with the Roman, Serif, and Gothic typefaces. (Windows limits its categories to Text, Informal, Display, and Symbol). (Feeling creative? You can make your own fonts in Windows 10 , too!)

Does Microsoft Word have handwriting or cursive fonts? Click the drop-down list in the Font section of the Ribbon menu to see the full list.

You can review the current Windows 10 font list  (and information on which products support them) on Microsoft’s website, although it neither shows nor tells you which typefaces are cursive. For a visual search, it’s best to open Word and click the drop-down list of font names in the Font section of the Ribbon menu. Scroll down to view the fonts, each font’s name written in its own lettering.

Typeface categories

You can also type a font name at the top of the drop-down menu to go straight to ones that interest you. The current Windows 10 Script typefaces include Brush Script MT, Edwardian Script ITC, Freestyle Script, French Script MT, Gigi, Harlow Solid Italic, Kunstler Script, Lucida Calligraphy, Lucida Handwriting, Magneto, Matura MT Script Capitals, Mistral, Monotype Corsiva, Palace Script MT, Pristina, Rage Italic, Script MT Bold, Segoe Script, Vivaldi, and Vladimir Script.

The Handwriting typefaces include Bradley Hand ITC and Viner Hand ITC. The Blackletter group includes Parchment, Old English Text MT, and Blackadder ITC. And last, the Greek Roman and Curly/Fancy are Informal Roman and Curlz MT, respectively.

If you have a different version of Windows or just want to see which typefaces/fonts are available on your system, open the Fonts folder and review the list.

1. From your desktop, select the C: drive, then locate the Windows folder and select (click or double-click) Windows Fonts .

2. Use your mouse to shrink the window from the bottom up, so an image of the selected typeface displays at the bottom of the window. Cursor down through the list to view specific fonts.

If the Windows 10 typefaces do not meet your needs, you have many, many other choices–thousands of downloadable typefaces from dozens of font websites. Hundreds of those sites are free and available with a simple Google search.

Downloading is easy and hassle-free. Here’s how to get started.

1. Choose a category, or type a font name in the Search box, or just page down through the thousands of pages. Choose a typeface, then click the Download button.

2. Windows displays the Download dialog, asking if you want to Open or Save the file. Choose Save and click OK .

3. Windows saves the .ZIP file in your Downloads folder.

4. From there, you can use Win Zip or 7-Zip to open the zipped folder. Just double-click the .ZIP file, and Windows associates that file with whatever zip program you have on your system. If the current Downloads folder is not where you want these files saved, click the Browse button and choose a different folder.

x04 download and then unzip free fonts from internet sites

Download and then unzip free fonts from Internet sites

NOTE: Do not choose the Fonts folder. It should not be available. Choose any other location that works for your purposes.

A few final tips as you start collecting fonts:

Store them carefully: I have a Download Fonts folder on my C: Drive to save all downloaded font files. It’s a good idea to have a backup: If your operating system fails or corrupts, you’ll have a copy of all those great fonts you’ve been collecting throughout the years.

Keep fonts with the documents that use them: If you use a downloaded font for a specific project and your system corrupts, or you’re forced to use a different computer to reopen and modify or print that project, that special font will not be available. Windows will substitute whatever font is closest to the original, which will completely ruin your project. Therefore, it’s a good idea to copy the fonts used in each project to that project’s folder so those fonts are attached to the project.

5 Ways to Make Your Text More Stylish in Microsoft Word

A well formatted text can grab your reader's attention and help them flow through your document. We show you how to add that final touch in Microsoft Word.

The mere sight of pages of plain text can make your eyelids start to droop. Unformatted Word documents signal to the reader that this will be a dry and dull read. Nobody wants to endure that kind of boredom.

Microsoft Word contains several tools that can make your text more beautiful with aesthetic fonts and subtle effects. Overdoing it can fill your document with distractions, but a sensible approach to design and decoration adds important visual interest to sustain your reader's attention.

Here are some font styles and effects to make your text stand out in Microsoft Word.

1. Install Your Own Aesthetic Fonts for Microsoft Word

One of the easiest ways to spice up text in Word is to introduce some new fonts. You can find plenty of free fonts online , but it's worth taking a moment to consider whether you want to use the OTF or the TTF format before you start your search.

Most fonts are downloaded as a .ZIP file, so first extract that archive if necessary. Depending on the font, you might receive just one file or several with additions to their name like bold, light, and expanded.

These are slightly tweaked versions of the font with amended dimensions—they can be very useful if you're looking for perfection, but most users will be well served by the normal version alone.

To install a font in Windows 10, all you need to do is double-click the OTF or TTF file and Windows Font Viewer will open automatically. You'll see a full preview of the character set and if you have administrator privileges you can click Install to make the font available across your system.

Then simply select your aesthetic new font from the format options inside Microsoft Word.

2. Add a Simple Shadow

A drop shadow is a classic graphic design technique you can use to make text stand out. Word offers a few different ways to achieve this, and you can use the Text Effects and Typography menu to do it.

First, type out your desired text and format its size and font to your specifications—you'll need to decide on how you want it to look before you create your shadow. Select your text using the mouse, click the Text Effects and Typography icon (the bluish A button), and then select Shadow followed by Shadow Options .

A new menu will open on the right letting you customize the shadow. Either click the Presets option and choose one of the many shadow options or adjust various settings for yourself to create a customized shadow.

You'll see the live preview on the left of the shadow menu.

Keep changing the options until the shadow looks the way you want. You can then click the X icon in the top-right corner of the shadow menu to close it. Word saves the changes to your text automatically.

3. Add a Drop Cap

A drop cap is an oversized first letter of a paragraph, often found in old novels. Microsoft Word can outfit your document with this attention-grabbing visual flourish in a matter of seconds, giving you the means of adding interest to a large block of text, or simply calling to mind a classical era.

Head to the Text section of the Insert tab and find the Drop Cap dropdown. You'll be able to create a very simple drop cap by selecting either Dropped or In margin here, but for the best results, you will need to click Drop Cap Options , while your cursor is in the paragraph you're looking to add the feature to.

Select Dropped and adjust the Distance from text to 0.2 cm (0.08 inches). You may need to tweak the amount, depending on the font you're using and the scale you're working at, but the drop cap can sometimes look awkward in comparison to standard line spacing when it's left at 0 .

Your choice of font will be key to the overall effect. A stark sans font can work well if your primary aim is an eye-catching look, but a more traditional drop cap can be attained with a showier serif typeface.

4. Use Text Effects

Used carelessly, the Text Effects available in Microsoft Word can easily call to mind the worst excesses of WordArt. However, as long as you don't overdo it, these effects can give your document some real visual punch.

To access the Text Effects menu, head to the Home tab and click the pop-out button in the Fonts section.

Then click the Text Effects button in the window that opens up.

The Text Fill option is a great way of adding some color to a piece of text. Solid fill will just apply a single hue to your selection, which can be done with far less fuss, but the Gradient fill option offers plenty more nuance for any budding graphic designers.

Related: How to Create a Custom Gradient Using Photoshop CC

As well as several presets, the Gradient fill menu can be used to hone in on a specific color blend to fill your text with. You can add and remove gradient stops using the two buttons to the far end of the color line, then adjust individual colors by clicking on their corresponding stop and tinkering with the Color dropdown situated directly below.

You can get some great effects using a gradient fill, but it's crucial that you carefully choose your colors to make sure they work well together. Remember to choose colors and color combinations based on your intended audience.

Text Outline

You can also use Text Effects to add an outline to your text, which can really help the words stand out against a background. To get started, head to the Text Effects menu once again, but this time click on the Text Outline dropdown.

You'll see Solid line and Gradient line options, just as you did on the Fill section of the menu earlier.

Setting up the color gradient works exactly as above, although obviously the results will be a bit more subtle because only the outline will be affected, rather than the text itself. Use the Width field to adjust how thick the outline is until you're happy with the results.

5. Adjust Your Character Spacing

Adjusting the space between individual characters of text may seem like a minor tweak, but it can have a powerful impact on its overall appearance and even its readability.

The most important thing to remember when adjusting character spacing is that less is more. A lot of care and attention goes into font design, so it's not always wise to make your own modifications. However, sometimes a small piece of prominent text like a title needs some alterations before it looks correct.

To get started, ensure that you have your text set up to your specifications in terms of size and font—adjustments to character spacing should be the final step toward perfecting your text. Once you're ready, highlight the area you want to tweak and click the pop-out button on the Font section of the Home tab.

Head to the Advanced tab of the window that opens up and look for the Character Spacing section. Here, you can use the Spacing dropdown to switch between Expanded and Condensed to move characters further apart or closer together. Use the input field to the right to specify how drastically you want to alter the spacing

Once you've experimented with these controls a little bit, you should be able to use these options to fine-tune your text. For instance, certain fonts might work better if the characters are grouped close together, particularly if the typeface is based on handwriting or calligraphy.

Alternatively, you can expand the character spacing of some text to make it wide enough to fill a space without increasing its height. This technique is particularly effective when combined with more minimalist fonts.

Make Your Text Flow in Word

With good formatting, your text not only looks more pleasing, but it also offers anchors for the eyes and helps a reader flow through the document.

There plenty more design rules for Microsoft Word that you can follow to give your documents a professional touch. These rules are worth learning if you spend quite a bit of your time with Word.

What Are the Best Fonts in Word?

Maybe you’re looking for the ideal font to use for a project. Maybe it’s a resume. Maybe you’re a designer, looking for an appealing Word font choice to recommend to your client.

No matter what the cause, you want to know: what are the best fonts in Word?

“Best” is subjective, so I’ll list the top 10 Word font styles, as well as why they’re the best, and let you select the one you think is right for you.

You may be asking why I’m such a font expert. I'm not a designer, but I have worked extensively with designers.  I've also read a lot of content online. That's how I know that no matter how good your words are, you also need to think about the right font to use in that situation for maximum impact.

Let's dive in.

Most used font style in Microsoft Word: Calibri

Today, the default font in Microsoft Word is Calibri, making it the most likely contender for this choice. Microsoft likely picked the Calibri font back in 2007 due to its modern and clean aesthetic with its rounded letterforms and balanced proportion.

Developed by Luc(as) De Groot, it's a Sans-Serif font. It was meant to show off Microsoft's own ClearType technology, which makes text look better on LCD screens.

Here's a nice sample of it:

Samples of the Calibri font in regular, bold, and italic. also has a pink background and white decals for prettiness.

Ideal font for a school essay: Arial

When it comes to the right font for graded essays, you're looking for a professional and readable ascetic. That means Comic Sans to the back, please.

Calibri is a great choice for it, but I'd select Arial as my top pick for any essays you have to submit. As a clean and modern sans-serif font, Arial offers a straightforward and professional look while maintaining readability.

It was designed by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders for Monotype Corporation in 1982. The font was initially developed as a replacement for Helvetica, which was popular in the graphic design industry but had limited availability for digital typesetting systems at the time.

It's not one of the most decorative fonts, but it looks good and sharp no matter the font size. Here's a sample:

Best font for accessibility: Open Sans

This category includes anyone who wants to ensure that readers with dyslexia, screen readers, or any other kind of visual or reading disability can still access your text. Developed by Steve Matteson in 2010, Open Sans is a cousin to Comic Sans MS, and it's an open-source Google font.

I love this font for this purpose because of these features:

Ample spacing: allows for easy reading and comprehension.

Versatility: this font will work in digital, print, headers, body text, and across multiple other mediums.

Recommended by the pros: most importantly, it's recommended in the context of accessibility guidelines, including the WCAG ( Web Content Accessibility Guidelines ).

Aside from selecting a different font, you should also consider factors such as font size, line spacing, and background color should also be considered to create an inclusive and accessible reading experience.

Here's what it looks like:

Top font for your resume: Times New Roman

Unlike essays, you have a new requirement here: you want something that looks pretty. That's why I recommend Times New Roman. It's one of the more decorative fonts, while still remaining firmly readable and professional-looking.

Plus, it's traditional. Developed by British type designer Stanley Morison, it was commissioned by the British newspaper, The Times, in the early 1930s.

Here's a little sample:

Top font for designers: Helvetica

I looked on Reddit to see what the top choice was, and most people said Helvetica due to its clean and timeless design. It has a neutral appearance that can adapt well to various design style.

Other fonts mentioned were Montserrat (my personal fave), Roboto, Josefin, Work Sans, Lato, and Mate.

Helvetica is built to spec, too – it was created by Swiss typeface designers Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann in the late 1950s. They wanted to develop a neutral and versatile font that could be used across a range of applications, from advertising to signage and corporate branding.

Most readable Word font: Verdana

Many of the fonts I've mentioned above are very readable, but Verdana takes the readable cake. It's a in the sans-serif fonts family, designed specifically for digital screens. Its generous spacing and large x-height contribute to its legibility, especially at smaller sizes.

It was designed specifically for Microsoft by Matthew Carter in the 1990s with wide letterforms and generous spacing.

Curious about what it looks like? Here's a snapshot:

Most compatible Word font: Georgia

My home state! And also one of my favorite serif fonts. Georgia is widely supported and available on different platforms. It is commonly used for web content and is considered a highly compatible choice.

Another Matthew Carter original, this one was commissioned by Microsoft as part of their initiative to enhance the legibility of text on computer screens.

Here's a sample:

Most usable font for your website: PT Sans

PT Sans is a versatile and readable sans-serif font that supports various languages and character sets. It has a neutral design and works well for both body text and headlines. That's why it's so great for almost any website design.

Designed by Russian type designer Alexandra Korolkova, in collaboration with Olga Umpeleva and Vladimir Yefimov, it was released in 2009 as part of the PT Fonts project, which aimed to create a set of free and open-source fonts for public use.

This is what it looks like:

Best fonts — for you: Your choice!

Honestly, if you've scanned this whole list and haven't found anything suitable, I recommend you spend some time browsing Reddit's designer subreddits and poring through Google Fonts. The world is your oyster.

You don't even have to limit yourself to a particular family. For instance, serif fonts are known in the industry as being more legible, but one study found there was very little difference between a serif typeface and sans fonts.

As I mentioned, my personal favorite is Montserrat just due to its sleek look and attractive sans-yness. But you may be different!

Bonus: Worst font to avoid

Any kind of cursive font is almost always a no-no in design. Practice your hand calligraphy all you want, but there's a reason the majority of the web uses typewriter-style letters.

Especially for legal documents, web design,  or anything else that will be seen and judged by your peers, employers, or colleagues, your font selection should be neat and readable.

I also recommend any kind of special characters, commonly used to differentiate usernames on platforms like Twitter. These are almost impossible for screen readers to parse appropriately.

Three samples of cursive fonts to demonstrate how difficult they are to read.

Where can I get fonts?

Bored of Microsoft's own fonts? A great place to look for more is Google Fonts. These are easily downloadable and will work across almost any online context.

What's the difference between a Serif and a Sans font?

The main difference between them lies in their letterform design and the presence or absence of small decorative strokes known as serifs.

If you look at Georgia's G, you'll see it has little ticks on the ends of the letter. By comparison, PT's S has no ticks - it's a clean line.

a sample of a serif font, Georgia, with ticks on the G. Also a sans font, PT Sans, showing no ticks on the letter S.

See how the Serif font has the distinguishing ticks, while the Sans font is smooth?

Serif fonts are often preferred for lengthy text passages, such as books and articles, where the serifs aid in guiding the eye along the lines of text. Sans-serif fonts are popular for digital content and headings, where legibility on screens and a modern appearance are prioritized.

Typeface vs font?

Although typeface is often used interchangeably with font by design noobs like me, there is a distinction in the field of typography.

A typeface refers to a set of designed characters that share consistent design attributes such as stroke width, shape, and overall style.

Meanwhile, a font is a digital file that contains the data necessary to display or print a specific typeface at a particular size, weight, and style.

What other fonts are good?

There are so many! If you're ever looking for the optimal choice for whatever application, I recommend looking for fonts that were specifically designed or used in that capacity.

For example, Franklin Gothic was used in the Star Wars subtitles. A great choice. Playfair Display is commonly known for making logos due to the high contrast between its thick and thin lines.

Design a Fancy Font

<p>Welcome to InstaFont's fancy font maker! Use the editor above to choose how characters get translated into other Unicode characters. You can test out your font by using the text box at the top of the page. Once you're done you can save your work and share the URL with others so they can use your font. You can come back and edit your font at any time - just don't forget your password! You can also create a collection of your favorite fonts (<a href="https://instafonts.io/font-changer" target="_blank">like this</a>) using the button below. Enjoy! :)</p>

This text font was made using instafonts.io . You can edit it to create your own fonts by clicking the edit button below. You can test out your font by using the text box at the top of the page. Once you're finished editing you can save your font and share the URL with others. Enjoy! :)

Advanced: If you're feeling ambitious, you can use " regular expressions " (i.e. "regex" rules) to create more complex translation rules than simple substitutions. Here are some examples of regex rules that you can use:

  • If a word starts with "m", replace the word with "moo": /\b(m[^\s]+)/g ➡ moo
  • Repeat all the input characters 3 times: /(.)/g ➡ $1$1$1
  • Add "-moo" to the end of all words: /\b([^\s]+)/g ➡ $1-moo
  • Repeat the final letter of all words: /\b([^\s]+)([^\s])/g ➡ $1$2$2
  • Replace all new lines (enter/return) with underscores: /\n/g ➡ _
  • Replace "cat" with "dog" no matter the capitalisation of "cat": /cat/gi ➡ dog

You can define a custom JavaScript function in the box below that will be used to transform your final text after all your rules have been applied. The function must be named "transform" and it should accept one input (text) and return the final output text. If you want a custom transformation, but don't know JavaScript, you could ask ChatGPT (or similar) to help by giving it the preceding instructions, and describing the functionality you want. Here's a screenshot of an example question/answer and here's the example question text to copy/paste.

Do you want the output text to wrap around when it reaches the end of the output box? Usually you do, but with some "multi-line" fonts, you don't.

Do you want to show a "randomize" button for the output text box? This feature only makes sense if your font has "randomization" within its custom JavaScript code. For example, if your custom JavaScript adds some random emojis to the end of the text, then you might want to enable this option.

About the JPG Format

You may find your image have a black background instead of being transparent when download as JPG. The transparency of an image depends on the file format you choose when downloading it. Only the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format supports transparency, while the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format does not. If you want your image to have a transparent background, it is important to download it in PNG format. By selecting PNG, you can preserve the transparent areas of your image, allowing it to blend seamlessly with different backgrounds or be layered onto other visuals. However, if you still prefer to download the image as a JPEG (JPG) file, you can manually set the background to match your desired color in the Background tab. Please do not copy/paste the PNG image into Word/Excel/PowerPoint directly; use insert image instead.

  • How to list all fonts in a Word document

Here’s one way to make a list of all the fonts used in a Word document . Sometimes there are stray fonts used in a Word document, perhaps from earlier versions or unused formatting trials.  Even a single letter or blank paragraph set to a font can make a difference.

List fonts with VBA

Open immediate window, run the font list code, list fonts in document – full code.

Removing these fonts isn’t just being tidy, unnecessary fonts can enlarge a document with embedded fonts or a PDF made from the document.

There are two methods of making a font list:

  • Use VBA code to make a list.
  • Dig into the document structure to reveal the included font list, see List fonts in a Word document – method 2

Once you have a list of fonts you can find or replace specific fonts in a Word document.

There are various chunks of VBA code that will make a list of the fonts in a document.

Many take a long time to run and while running Word is locked up.

We’ve made this code which is simple, fast and can be run on any Word document.  The results appear as a simple text list in the Immediate window (we’ll explain where that is) ready to be copied anywhere you like.

fancy writing font on word

Using StoryRanges means all parts of the document should be checked including headers, footers, footnotes and endnotes.

A collection object to make a unique font list removes the need to check for duplicates.

Putting the font list into the Immediate window is faster, more contained and easily copyable.

The   Application.ScreenUpdating = False/True lines might help speed up the code in a large document.

The full code is below.

How to run the font list code

This code can be run on any Word document as a ‘one off’, not just a macro-enabled .dotm file. This is NOT the standard way to add VBA to an Office document, it’s a simplified version for adding code to run only while the doc is open.

Open the document then switch to the Developer tab.  Developer now showing – see here.

Choose Developer | Visual Basic to open the VBA editor.  Right-click on the document you want to check. Look for the Project with the name of the document then “Microsoft Word Objects” and ThisDocument and finally “View Code”

fancy writing font on word

“View Code” will open a code window for this document (we’re not bothering with Modules for this quick use).

Open the Immediate so you can see the font list  View | Immediate Window.

fancy writing font on word

Immediate window is normally used to for quick testing or debugging using Debug.Print commands.

Now the VBA editor should look like this with the document selected in the left-pane.

fancy writing font on word

Click the Run button on the toolbar.  If the document is large, there’ll be a wait of perhaps a few minutes for really big docs.

Here’s one result from our tests showing 27 different fonts in a large document.

fancy writing font on word

That’s way more than there should be, so there’ll be some font hunting (Advanced Search) to search the text by font and change any stray font formatting.

fancy writing font on word

Copying the code above should work OK in Edge/Chrome browsers.

With Firefox, we’re told there are problems, probably related to the end of line breaks. Make sure that each code line ends with a full line break, if necessary replace each end of line with a press of the ‘Enter’ key.

List fonts in a Word document – method 2 is another way to get a font list.

Microsoft launches an AI-powered copy-and-paste tool. Here's how you can use it

lance-31.png

Copying and pasting text in Windows has stayed largely the same over the years. Now, Microsoft is expanding the feature with a hefty dose of AI. Added to the free PowerToys utility on Tuesday, the new Advanced Paste tool not only lets you choose the format for pasted text, but offers AI powers to summarize, rewrite, or translate the text.

To take Advanced Paste for a spin, you'll need the latest version of PowerToys. If you don't yet have the program, browse to  Microsoft's Learn page for PowerToys , the  Microsoft Store page for PowerToys , or the  GitHub page , and install it. If you already have the utility, open it from the Windows System Tray and install the latest update, to get version 0.80.1.

In PowerToys, open the settings page for Advanced Paste. Make sure the switch is turned on for "Enable Advanced Paste." The switch for Clipboard history should also be on. Using the tool's built-in AI skills requires an API key from OpenAI, so we'll get to that shortly. Right off the bat, though, you can access a menu that lets you choose how you want to paste any copied text.

Open a plain text file or document and copy some text. Next, press the default shortcut of Windows key + Shift + V . The Advanced Paste menu gives you three choices: 1) Paste as plain text, 2) Paste as markdown, and 3) Paste as JSON.

Pasting as plain text removes any formatting. Pasting as markdown preserves the formatting for HTML content by converting it into the Markdown format . This option is helpful if you write web-based content that you need to use in an application or system that supports Markdown.

Also: How to remap keys using Keyboard Manager in Microsoft's PowerToys

Pasting as JSON converts the text into the JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format used in many programming languages and files. Unless you're working with HTML or programming languages, you'll likely find plain text the most useful.

Another option lets you access your clipboard history, which ties into the cloud-based universal clipboard built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. Click this option to see a list of recent items that you've copied. Select the one you want to paste and then choose Paste as plain text from the menu.

The real power of Advanced Paste comes from its AI capabilities. To set this up, you'll need that API key from OpenAI as well as available credits in your account. If you don't already have a spare key, browse to the OpenAI API Keys page . Sign in with your account or create one if necessary.

Click the button for "Create new secret key." At the secret key window, click the button for "Create secret key." You can also name the key if you wish. Clip Copy to copy the key to the clipboard.

Return to the PowerToys settings screen for Advanced Paste. Click the Enable button next to Enable Paste with AI. Paste the API key and click Save. Now you're ready to try the tool's AI skills.

Open a text file or document and copy some text. Press Windows key + Shift + V to display the Advanced Paste menu. In the field for "Describe what format you want," you can now type a request that makes use of the AI features. Here are a few examples from Microsoft:

  • Summarize text: Copy lengthy text from the clipboard and ask the tool to summarize it.
  • Translate text: Copy the text from the clipboard in one language and ask the tool to translate it into another language.
  • Generate code: Copy a description of a function from the clipboard and ask the tool to generate the code for it.
  • Transform text: Copy text from the clipboard and ask the tool to rewrite it in a specific style, such as a professional email or a casual message.
  • Stylize text: Copy text from the clipboard and ask the tool to rewrite it in the style of a well-known author, book, or speaker. For this example, Microsoft suggested that you ask the tool to paste the text as if it were written by Mark Twain or Shakespeare.

After you submit your request, the generated text should appear in the field, from where you can paste it into your current file or document.

I ran a few requests. In one, I asked Advanced Paste to summarize an article. In another, I asked it to translate an article from English into Italian. And in a third, I asked it to rewrite the text as if it were written by Shakespeare. In each case, the results were interesting, amusing, and potentially useful. You should try Advanced Paste for its AI skills alone.

Speech to Text issue in Word and other software

I am attempting to use Microsoft Speech to Text for some software that I use at my work which requires text input - the software is called Novopath and the vendor says people have successfully used Dragon software with it; we were hoping the free windows version would also be useful. Typically what we would be dictating would be short codes (example: `sb1) and commands ('press f8').

I am using Windows 10.

I have set up voice to text on the laptop, using a headset, and done the training several times. When I dictate into something like notepad, it automatically types out everything I say as text on the screen, and I can also say things like "delete" etc. It more or less works the way I expect it to/tutorials indicate it should.

When I dictate into Novopath, or Microsoft word even - it's like it has no idea that I want it to type out what I'm saying. It will ignore almost everything I do, and just insert a new line. Sometimes it seems to hear about half the word I said - so for example, if I say "testing" it will just write "s". When I say "hello" it opens the help menu, stuff like that. I'm using the same headset, sitting in the same office, and obviously I have the same voice...

This is insanely annoying since it clearly works in Notepad but that's essentially useless to me!

Any idea why it would work in one program but not another?

Hello, Caitlin Hesketh.

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thank you for your feedback.

This issue might be caused by a compatibility problem with the Novopath software.

I suggest submitting your feedback through the Feedback Hub.

Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience, you can submit your ideas and suggestions through the  Feedback Hub , and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.

Please share the feedback link here after submitting as it will allow others on the forum to vote for your submission, including me. More votes will lead to more visibility and higher priority to the development team.

I also recommend contacting the developer of Novopath to provide feedback.

Since the adaptation of feature software often requires cooperation between developers from both sides to resolve.

If there are any updates, please feel free to reply.

Best regards.

Microsoft Word just fixed its default paste option

Now, microsoft word will use the ‘merge formatting’ option by default..

By Emma Roth , a news writer who covers the streaming wars, consumer tech, crypto, social media, and much more. Previously, she was a writer and editor at MUO.

Microsoft logo

Have you ever pasted text into your beautifully formatted Microsoft Word document, only for it to ruin everything? Well, the days of the should finally be over, as Microsoft Word will now merge the text’s formatting with your document by default.

Unlike the previous “keep source formatting” default, the “merge formatting” option preserves the original bold and underlined text, along with list and table structure. But it also changes the visual aspects of the text, such as font family, size, and color, to match the document you’re working on. That should save you from messing up the formatting of your entire document when pasting in text from another source.

  • Google Sheets’ new formatting feature has Excel switchers excited

You could previously choose the “merge formatting” option from Word’s pasting menu, but it wasn’t the default. If you still want to use the “keep source formatting” option as the default, you can change it by heading to File > Options > Advanced > Cut, copy, and paste and then selecting the Pasting from other program drop-down menu. From there, choose Keep Source Formatting .

Last year, Microsoft finally started supporting the Control + Shift + V shortcut , which lets you paste in text without formatting at all.

1. Do you have a child in year 1 at primary school?

If so, your child will take part in the phonics screening check in June.

The phonics screening check is a check of your child’s phonics knowledge. It helps your school confirm whether your child is making the progress expected in the national curriculum.

With some exceptions, all pupils who have reached the age of 6 by the end of the school year must take the check during that academic year, including those in maintained nursery schools. For most pupils, this will be in year 1.

In 2024, the check will take place during the week commencing Monday 10 June.

2. What is phonics?

Phonics is an effective way of teaching children to read. By ensuring high quality phonics teaching, we want to improve literacy levels and give all children a solid base to build on as they progress through school.

Through phonics, children are taught how to:

  • recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes
  • identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make, such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’
  • blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word

Children can then use this knowledge to ‘decode’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read.

3. What is the phonics screening check?

The phonics screening check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words.

Pseudo-words are words that are phonically decodable but are not actual words with an associated meaning. They are included in the check specifically to assess whether your child can decode a word using their phonics skills.

All pseudo-words in the check are accompanied by a picture of an imaginary creature. Children are taught that when a word has a creature next to it, it is a pseudo-word. This ensures that they are not trying to match the pseudo-word to a word in their vocabulary.

The check is designed to give teachers information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.

4. Do I need to do anything to prepare my child for the check?

Phonics works best when children are given plenty of encouragement and learn to enjoy reading and books. Parents play a very important part in helping with this.

You can highlight the phonics sounds when you read with your child. Teaching how sounds match with letters is likely to start with individual letters such as ‘s’, ‘a’ and ‘t’ and will then move on to two-letter sounds such as ‘ee’, ‘ch’ and ‘ck’.

With all books, encourage your child to ‘sound out’ unfamiliar words and then blend the sounds together from left to right rather than looking at the pictures to guess. Once your child has read an unfamiliar word, you can talk about what it means and help them to follow the story.

Your child’s teacher will also be able to suggest books with the right level of phonics for your child. These books are often called ‘decodable readers’ because the story is written with words made up of the letters your child has learnt. Your child will be able to work out new words from their letters and sounds, rather than just guessing.

Most schools use book bags and a reading record, which is a great way for teachers and parents to communicate about what children have read. The reading record can tell you whether your child has enjoyed a particular book and shows problems or successes they have had, either at home or at school.

5. How will the results be used?

Schools will have access to all their pupils’ results to identify those who need additional support and make plans to help them improve.

The Department for Education does not publish school-level results for the phonics screening check, but schools will have access to  national, regional and local authority results  to allow them to benchmark their pupils’ performance.

6. Will I receive feedback on my child’s check?

Your child’s teacher will share your child’s score with you in the second half of the summer term.

If your child has found the check difficult, the school should tell you what support they have put in place to help your child improve. You might like to ask how you can support your child to take the next steps in reading.

Children who have not met the standard in year 1 will re-take the check in year 2. The results of any re-take will also be shared with you.

7. Further information

Your child’s teacher will be able to answer any questions about the phonics screening check. For further details, you can also visit  www.gov.uk/STA .

Apple News+ introduced Quartiles, a new original spelling game, and a new Offline Mode that automatically provides recent and personalized News content for subscribers when they’re not connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. Both features are available with iOS 17.5 or later for News+ subscribers. 1

“We’re always working to improve the experience for our News+ subscribers,” said Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News. “Our new daily word game Quartiles is a fun addition to our popular crossword offerings. And Offline Mode makes it easy to access the hundreds of magazines, newspapers, narrated articles, and more included in a News+ subscription — no matter where you are.”

Quartiles challenges players to form words by selecting tiles containing two to four letters, and users collect points based on word length. New puzzles are available each day, and players can also choose to share a Quartiles puzzle with other News+ subscribers.

Quartiles is the latest addition to the Puzzles collection available to News+ subscribers. With iOS 17, Apple introduced a daily crossword and mini crossword puzzle for News+ subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. News+ subscribers can also access a new Puzzles Scoreboard to see personalized stats and streaks for each puzzle, including their solve rate and their longest streak.

Apple News+ subscribers can now enjoy Offline Mode on iPhone and iPad to automatically download Top Stories, Apple News Today audio briefings, full magazine issues and narrated articles from News+ publishers, and puzzles to access later, without Wi-Fi or a cellular connection. When the device is back online, downloaded content will automatically refresh, and downloads will be optimized to maximize space on the device.

  • Quartiles is available to News+ subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.
