Best Printable Writing Prompts & Worksheets for Kindergarten

Best Printable Writing Prompts & Worksheets for Kindergarten

Help your kindergarten students become phenomenal writers this year with these printable writing prompts for kindergarten! I have many fun writing prompts to help simplify your lesson planning while teaching those early writing skills.

Learning to read and write is such a crucial part of Kindergarten. These skills really cannot be understated. However, it's vital to teach them in developmentally appropriate and fun ways! It's even better when you can implement a system you can set up once and use repeatedly...

In this post, I'll share with you several great writing activities you can refer to again and again. I'll also offer helpful tools to support those early writing lessons.

Before you dive in, make sure you grab this  writing station ! This is one of the best ways to help your students learn how to write independently.

writing station

The writing center includes a variety of simple sentences, a picture word bank for people, animals, places, food, and more, common spellings for days and numbers, and so much more.

It will save you so much time and help your young writers learn how to find (and spell) the right words themselves!

writing station

You can also share resources at this station, like writing pages, highlighters, and other writing tools you need for writing practice. It will simplify your day and help your kids become more independent at the same time. Win-win!

Benefits of Writing Prompts & Daily Practice

One of the most important things you can do at the beginning of the school year is start a daily writing routine! Whether you post fun journal prompts or want your students to do something else, build it into your day as a must-do, never-skip routine.

  • Develop fine motor skills: Your students' hands are changing so much right now! They need ample opportunities to develop their fine motor skills to develop the hand strength and dominance they need in the future.
  • Get into a routine : When you're used to doing something every day, those neural pathways fire automatically. It will become easier and easier over time if your students write every single day.
  • Build emotional intelligence : Daily journaling and sharing allows students to learn about each other. Often, kindergarten is the first time your students meet people different from them! By sharing their writing, they can show compassion when their friends are disappointed or sad, celebrate when they're happy, and experience a full range of other feelings.
  • Develop writing stamina: Although we start with the shortest, most predictable sentences at the beginning, the writing assignments can get longer as the year progresses. This is incredibly helpful when they move on to first grade!
  • Build community: When your kids feel safe enough to share their thoughts and feelings around these various topics, they trust each other more deeply and know they belong. This is easily the best part!

Free Kindergarten Writing Prompts for Journal Writing

I love incorporating a daily journaling routine! Since it becomes a habit, your kids will know to expect it every day. If you follow a specific format, they can even anticipate what they'll write about before they get to school!

These 101 kindergarten journal prompts are all focused on your little writer! They'll get to share exciting things about themselves and reveal their personalities by answering one question per day. Even reluctant writers like to share about themselves, so they love answering questions about their best friend, their favourite food, and so much more.

Weekend Recount Writing

This is one of my favourite routines! It's easy to use, customisable, and you can scaffold it to any skill level with a few simple sentence starters.

101 Free Kindergarten Writing Prompts for Journal Writing

Weekend recounting is pretty straightforward. You're simply asking kids to share what they did over the weekend. However, it is so much better than just that!

First, you'll need these weekend recount slides . Once you open them up, you'll see how easily this becomes part of your routine.

101 Free Kindergarten Writing Prompts for Journal Writing

There are slides with sentence stems, frequently used words, and prompts. You can also use symbols to scaffold the activity to different skill levels.

There are even resources about "magic writing," which I use for kids who are still learning to write and aren't ready to write full sentences independently.

Beginning Sentences Worksheets

When you first teach young kids to read, the words must be incredibly easy to read. You usually start with very simple, 1-2 letter words that can be decoded with almost no effort.

These beginning sentences worksheets are very simple to decode with phrases like, "I am a cat" or "Here is a bag."

Best Printable Writing Prompts & Worksheets for Kindergarten

The goal is for your students to first decode these simple sentences, cut them out, paste them in order, and finally write them again in their own writing.

Kindergarten writing journals

This process works is so powerful for a few reasons.

  • Decoding: Students get a chance to practice those early decoding skills, connecting the written words to oral sounds and phrases.
  • Cutting: This allows them to strengthen their fine motor skills and hand muscles, which is extremely important for this age group.
  • Pasting:  To paste, they must attend to the individual order of the words. This means they will need to decode the sentence again, observe the punctuation and capitalisation, and ensure the words are in order.
  • Writing: When they write, they practice letter formation, capitalisation, finger spacing, spelling, and more, all while developing their fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination.

These seem like simple activities, but they really support several different important kindergarten skills at once!

Plus, there are also sentence-building mats so they can craft their own sentences, and I've also created similar versions that jumble the words together for an extra challenge. These are a great way to work on those foundational reading and writing skills early on!

Decodable Sentences

These simple activities are an excellent way to help your students learn to read and write! They're similar to the activities above but in this situation, they must match the complete sentence with the image.

Best Printable Writing Prompts & Worksheets for Kindergarten

This means they have a purpose for reading. They have to decode the words to understand which scene matches the sentence, which can get challenging when they have other sentences to decode at the same time!

After matching the image and the sentence together, they write the sentence by hand. Like the last activity, this is a great way to get them to engage with how words are spelled, capitalised, arranged, and punctuated in sentences while also building their writing stamina.

Get your free CVC sentence mats here!  If you like them, you can view the full collection here .

Decodable Sentence Mats

Another variation of decodable sentences, this activity requires students to decode the sentence, make the decodable word, then write the decodable sentence.

When young children begin grade school, they are most likely a new writer. The year of kindergarten is a year of many firsts for young students.

Some students spend the entire year, getting used to being at school every day. It can be a massive adjustment for many children and their family members. Much of the day is spent in the beginning phases of learning math, science, reading, and history.

All of these foundational components of this first school year are vital to children making the rest of their way through grade school.

Some kindergarteners may feel overwhelmed by the structure. This is why structured free time or time where they get to be creative is incredibly helpful. Writing is an easy way to implement a little structured freedom into a kindergarten student’s day.

Learning to Read and Write

Writing is essential to becoming a fluent reader. Reading fluency is essential to becoming a well-developed writer. Both writing and reading are an essential component of that first year of school.

Writing may technically be a structured assignment, but it is a great way to give students time to think on their own. This is why many teachers implement daily journals into the schedule.

Some teachers have these journal prompts as morning work, to use as a break in the middle of the day, or to close up the day. It is an extremely beneficial activity and a fun way for students to get a little creative.

All that being said, if teachers do a journal prompt every day, that is a lot of prompts to come up with.

If you are in need of some daily writing prompts or new kindergarten writing prompts, check out this list! Please share on your favorite social media platform so more parents and teachers can help their kids with writing.

Miscellaneous, Make-You-Think Writing Prompts

Younger kids that need challenged are going to love these fun writing prompts. Some of these questions may require a more thoughtful answer. They will have your students thinking, and may require a discussion before they begin writing. They are the best way to broaden your student’s mind and have them think abstractly.

Towards the bottom of this list, there are some questions about emotions. Journaling is a great way to talk about how you feel while getting writing practice. Kindergarten is new and can be scary for some students. These prompts are a great way for them to learn how to put their feelings into words.

How to Use Kindergarten Writing Journals

Writing can be one of the most intimidating components of the Kindergarten curriculum.  I remember when I began teaching kindergarten, I stressed so much about teaching writing.  This was mainly because I felt that we did not have a solid writing curriculum.  So when I couldn’t find the resources my students needed to become successful writers, I began creating them.   My Kindergarten Writing Journals have become one of my best sellers, and they have even been featured in the TPT Blog!  In this post, I will share how to use writing journals in kindergarten so that you get your students writing every day!

Why You Should Use Kindergarten Writing Journals

First, let’s begin with why using Kindergarten Writing Journals is important and effective.  Here are 4 reasons why I am passionate about using the journals in my kindergarten classroom…

1.  GET YOUR STUDENTS WRITING EVERY DAY.

I use these journals to make sure we write EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.  In kindergarten, the day flies by and sometimes you just don’t get through everything you have planned.  Thanks to having these no-prep journals printed and ready to go each month, I make sure to take time each day to fit in writing.

2.  TRACK PROGRESS AND MEASURE WRITING GROWTH.

Writing journals are a wonderful way to track progress and show growth in your emerging writers.  I send each journal home at the end of the month, and I encourage parents to save them.  At the end of the year, I tell the parents to compare the September Journal with the May Journal.  The transformation is truly amazing!  This is one of the reasons why writing has become my favorite subject to teach.  Seeing a student begin the year drawing pictures and end the year writing multiple sentences is truly the best feeling ever!

3.  STUDENTS LEARN FROM REPETITION.

My students learn from daily repetition of watching me model the writing process.   Using the writing checklist included on every page, I model how to begin with an uppercase letter, add finger spaces, sound out words, use ending punctuation, and add a detailed illustration.  Of course, it will take time for your students to be able to do this on their own.  I assure you they will though!

4.  THE DIFFERENTIATON IS BUILT RIGHT IN!

Every year, I have a few parents who are concerned that their children may be bored because they are already reading.  Here is where my writing journals will come to your rescue.  I usually explain to the parents that even readers have things to work on – like writing.  In my years of teaching kindergarten, I’ve had many kids enter reading BUT they are certainly not writing.  So, I tell the parents that I will provide a challenge by giving their children a push in the area of writing.  While other children may be using pictures or adding a few letters, you can differentiate instruction by encouraging your higher-level learners to try to complete the sentence prompt.  The journals have helped me provide enrichment and calm the concerned parents without making extra work for me!

kindergarten writing journals

Now that we’ve covered the why it’s important to use journals, let’s move on to how to actually use them…

You might be thinking, “How can I use writing journals at the beginning of the year?  My kids are learning to write their names.”  Trust me.  I get it, but I will tell you that it is never to early to expose your kids to the writing process.  At the beginning of the year and throughout the first quarter, we use the journals for “shared writing.”  Basically, we complete the pages together.  I do a lot of modeling and explicit instruction showing the children the mechanics of the writing process.  I also teach my kids how to add details to their illustrations using at least five colors and adding body parts to people.

Please know that it is perfectly okay if your kiddos do not complete the sentence and only add an illustration to the page in the early stages.  Keep in mind that the first step to writing is using pictures to tell a story.  They will get there!

Trust the process.  Model, write, repeat.  Your kids will soak up everything you teach them.  Each month, you will begin to see them make small improvements.

Usually by the second quarter, my above-level learners may be able to do the pages independently while I still provide support to the rest of the group.   Most students are able to complete the daily page on their own around January.   By the end of the year, students are able to write well beyond one sentence thanks to making journal writing part of our daily routine.

How to implement Journal writing with preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten! #writing #preschool #prek

Journal writing with little learners is SO MUCH FUN (once they get the routine down)!  It makes my teacher’s heart overflow to see them drawing, writing, and sharing their ideas!  I get to see them fall in love with writing and see themselves as writers!  What a gift!  In this post, I’m going to tell you all the details about how to implement journal writing in your classroom and get your kids excited about writing, too!

You can grab my Journal Writing packet from TpT HERE .  It includes all the printables and teacher directions discussed in this post, plus MORE.

Let me start by saying that we only do these journaling activities during the second half of the school year.  In the first part of the school year, we do “fine motor journals,” which are very different. The focus is on developing their fine motor strength and how to make letters, numbers, shapes, and different types of lines.

The most asked question I always get asked is…. what do students write about? My students CHOOSE what they want to draw and write about.  I never give my students a prompt to write to, and they never copy my sentences.  NEVER.  I want students to fall in LOVE with writing, so I let them pick what they want to write about!  Writing is a way students can express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, memories, and connections.  They will be more invested in their writing if they decide what they want to write about.

Getting Started with Journal Writing

Day One:   Starting journals will take practice and modeling just like any classroom routine or procedure. During the entire first week, we start journals, I model by doing my journal at circle time.  I write my name at the top, draw a picture, and write about it on the line.

Make it a Routine:  Just like any other part of your day, make journal time consistent.  Reinforce it as a routine or procedure, so students know what to expect and what is expected of them.  You know your students and classroom best, so make a journaling routine that works for you and your students.

Example: Our journal writing time routine is:  sit at the table, write your name, draw the picture, and write on the line.  Then they read it to me and go do the table time activity until school is over.

How to implement journal time and journal time ideas for little learners (preschool, pre-k, kindergarten) #prechool #prek #kindergarten #journals

Color Code:   If you have multiple tables of students for journals, color code the supplies and journal tubs.  The table in the front is the red table, and the table at the back is the blue table.  The red table has the red caddies and red journal folder/tub, and the blue table has the blue caddies and blue journal folder/tub.  You can group students by ability or do mixed ability grouping.  If you have a few tables for journals, have a teacher sit at each table to support that group of students.

Make student journals. How to implement journal time and journal time ideas for little learners (preschool, pre-k, kindergarten) #prechool #prek #kindergarten #journals

Paper:  There are many different types of journal papers included in my Journal Pack.  Choose the ones that best suit your students’ needs: lines, no lines, dotted lines. Or just use plain white paper with no lines.

Not all students have to use the same paper, which makes it an easy way to differentiate. For example, my three-year-olds use pages with one line, and my pre-k students use pages with two lines.

You can create a new journal each week, every two weeks, or every month for each student.  You can simply staple the pages together or bind them.  Again, it’s totally up to you.

Organization: Get organized, so you save instruction time!

  • Writing Tools:  Place in caddies or buckets (markers and colored pencils are my favorites for students to use)
  • ABC Charts:   Place on the tables or in the caddies.  I have various ABC charts to help students at different levels (just uppercase letters, uppercase and lowercase letters, letters, and sounds)
  • Journals:   Store in a folder, magazine/book box type tube, or basket (I use a book box type tub like in the photo, scroll down a bit to see it)
  • Name Plates:  Create nameplates for each student.  Students can use the nameplates as a visual support to help write their name or their friend’s name in their writing.  I make my nameplates double-sided.  One side has their name in all capital letters, and the other side has their name in lowercase.  I glue them back to back, laminate and cut them out. You can grab the FREE Editable Name Cards HERE .
  • Sight Word List:   You can place a list of sight words in each caddie if your students are working on them.
  • Developmental Sequence Chart:   Place the chart in the tub.  You can write what level each student is on so you and your team can support each student at their own level. If a child is scribbling, THAT IS OK because that is the level that the student is at.  Help and support them at their own level.

Journal Writing Tub or Basket Grab a basket or tub to put all the journal goodies in.  If you color code, make one for each table.  Place student journals, name cards, anchor chart pieces, teacher pencils (aka regular-size pencils), a writing continuum chart with students’ levels marked, and a folder with extra blank journal pages in each basket/tub.  It makes transitions, setting up, and cleaning up journals super easy.

“I Can Write About…” Anchor Charts:  I ALWAYS let students pick what they want to write about.  Trust me, it is amazing!  You will get to know your students so well just by reading and helping them during journal time.

Writing idea anchor chart. How to implement journal time and journal time ideas for little learners (preschool, pre-k, kindergarten) #prechool #prek #kindergarten #journals:

Sometimes students get stuck or write about the same things every day.  Create the anchor chart to give them ideas on other things they can write about.  Place in a pocket chart or glue to paper and post in the classroom.  We slowly create this anchor chart together about a month after we start journals.  Each week we add three or so things we can write about to the chart, so it’s not overwhelming for kiddos. Parent Note & Developmental Sequence:   Send a note and developmental sequence home to parents.  The note tells parents what students are learning and appropriate expectations.   It also reminds parents to focus on the positive and celebrate their little one’s journals!

Writing idea anchor chart. How to implement journal time and journal time ideas for little learners (preschool, pre-k, kindergarten) #prechool #prek #kindergarten #journals:

Send the note home when you start journals with your class and randomly throughout the year with completed journals.  Make sure to keep at least one journal a month for their portfolio so you can see the growth they make and use it as a tool to guide your teaching.

The most important thing is to make journal writing time FUN, positive, and relaxed so students can fall in love with writing.  I’ve included some tips on what to do and NOT do.

I’m sure you are super excited about writing journals and want to try it with your class!  Trust me, you and your students will LOVE it.

“What can I write about?”  If you’ve ever done writing with young children, you’ve probably heard this question more than a few times!  It’s this very question that leads many parents and teachers to hunt for daily writing prompts.  Each day they put a prompt on the board and expect each child to complete it.

But helping kids find their own journal topics in preschool and kindergarten is easier than you might think!

My students are always having trouble finding journal ideas. I'm going to put aside those borng journal prompts and try this!

Before we talk about how to help children find writing topics, it’s important to make sure we know what it means to have young children keep journals.

What is  journal writing  in preschool and kindergarten?

My students are always having trouble finding journal ideas. I'm going to put aside those borng journal prompts and try this!

(Yes, he’s wearing a hat and sunglasses indoors.)

1. Journal writing is a brief but  regular writing time — Initially, preschoolers may write for just five minutes.  Over time they will write longer.   However long the writing period is, the important thing is that children write often. Aim for at least three times a week if you want your children to grow as writers.

2. Journal writing is  open-ended.   “My favorite food is…”   or “I like to…” are writing prompts. These are not open-ended .  While they may be useful on occasion, please don’t give your child a daily writing prompt.  You want to give your child the freedom to choose his own topics for writing.    Giving your child a writing prompt every day is like putting him in a box.  He can only stretch so far.  Kids really can choose their own topics when we show them how.

My students are always having trouble finding journal ideas. I'm going to put aside those borng journal prompts and try this!

3. Journal writing  looks different for each child .  Some children will scribble, some will write random letters, and some will attempt to spell (see above).   Check out my post about the early writing stages to see how journal writing looks for kids at different levels of development.

How can we help young children find journal topics in preschool?

1. We model first .  If you’re a classroom teacher, kids will be fascinated by the mundane details of your life.  “Today I had oatmeal and buttered toast for breakfast.”  It also helps them see that the little details of their lives are important too!

2. We let children know that it’s okay to start with a picture .  Most kids can start drawing without too much thought.  As their picture takes shape, they have a writing topic. When my Three draws a picture I say, “What can you tell me about your picture?”  Sometimes I let him dictate and I show him how writing is “talk written down.”

3. We give children drawing prompts as needed .  My Three wanted to write about Pete the Cat, but after trying to draw a cat he scribbled over the picture and wanted to quit.  So I showed him, step by step, how to draw a cat’s head.

4. We give suggestions for writing based on recent experiences.  This is different from a prompt because we’re not giving a sentence starter or a very narrow topic.  Here’s how this might sound:

“I don’t know what to write about!”

“Hmmm… what’s something that’s happened lately that you could write about?”

“I don’t know.”

“You helped Daddy plant in the garden.”

“I don’t want to write about that.”

“How about your sister’s birthday party?”

“I don’t want to write about that either.”

“I’ll give you one more idea. If you don’t like it, you’ll have to find your own.  How about you write about our vacation to California?”

“(Sigh.) I guess I’ll write about the garden.”

(Yes, that is a rough transcript of a recent writing lesson at our house!)

3. We give children a resource for finding topics .  I created this printable to give my preschool boys (ages 5 1/2 and almost 4) a kick-start when it’s time to write.  The chart doesn’t tell them what to write.  It just helps them see all the things they have to write about .

My students are always having trouble finding journal ideas. I'm going to put aside those borng journal prompts and try this!

How can you use this chart at your house?

Here’s how it sounded at our house:

1.  Model how to use the chart.

“Look at all these pictures! They can give me all kinds of ideas of things to write about.  I see a family, books, animals, grandparents…”  I’m going to use this to help me think of something to write about.  Hmmm.  I think I’ll write about my family. I’ll write about our baby.”

We have a sweet baby.  She smiles a lot.

She likes her swing.

2. Help your child choose a journal topic from the chart and get started.

Right away, my Three decided he wanted to write about a song.  “Pete the Cat and his white shoes!”

“Great!” I said. “Will you draw Pete the Cat?”  He tried, became immediately frustrated, and scribbled out his picture.  I turned to a new page. “Let’s try again. Look, I’ll show you how to draw a cat.”  Step by step he drew the cat’s face and then added the rest of his picture.

3. Encourage your child to do as much as he is able to do.

Even though my Three was ready to stop at a picture, I know he can do more than that.  So I prompted him.

“What can you tell me about your picture?”

“Pete the Cat.”

“Great! Would you like to write that?”

“Okay.”

My students are always having trouble finding journal ideas. I'm going to put aside those borng journal prompts and try this!

Here’s the final product.  “PT The C.”

My students are always having trouble finding journal ideas. I'm going to put aside those borng journal prompts and try this!

This was what my older preschooler ended up writing after choosing the topic “birthday.”  He drew the picture first, and I encouraged him to write about it.  As for his spellings, he copied “birthday” from the chart and got the rest from his head.

I hope this post has given you several ways to help your preschooler or kindergartener find his own topics for writing!  For more posts in this series, click on the image below:

50 Kindergarten Journal Prompts to Spark Learning

SHARE WITH A FRIEND

“My dad is super strong cause he smells like broccoli. I love my dad.”

I found a childhood sketch of a peach and black blurb standing next to a larger blurb of brown and red. I’m pretty sure this was my sister’s drawings lost in my keepsake box of elementary school paperwork because my drawing skills were so much better ( kidding, but only sort of) .

Kindergarten can be so fun for children. They’re in a play-to-learn mindset and you’ll keep their attention when you allow them to learn through play.

One way to continue fostering this creativity is by keeping a journal with daily prompts .

The Benefits of Kindergarten Journaling

The action of journaling in early childhood can have profound effects on cognitive, emotional, and language development.

Cognitive and Emotional Development

Through journaling, kindergarteners learn to organize their thoughts, develop critical thinking skills, and express their emotions. It’s a safe space for them to make sense of their world and their place in it.

Language and Literacy

Early writing, even in the simplest forms, is the first step towards literacy. Kindergarten prompts can improve letter recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension as children write and draw their responses to these thought-provoking questions.

Fine Motor Skills

As they hold a pencil and form letters or doodles, children are refining their fine motor skills, laying the groundwork for more detailed tasks like handwriting and drawing in the future.

A young girl with pigtails and blue bows smiling at the camera, wearing a pink backpack and a school uniform with a blue shirt and beige jumper in a classroom.

Implementing Kindergarten Journaling in Practice

The transition from the list of prompts to actual implementation can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how to introduce journaling in the kindergarten classroom or home environment:

Creating a Journal

Start with the right materials (like downloading this free journal for your child or class). Each child should have their own journal.

Setting the Scene

Establish journaling as a routine part of the day. Choose a time that works for the child and adult, and create a quiet, comfortable space for writing.

Adult Involvement

In the beginning, adults can help spell words for the child and ask them to identify letters based on the sounds you’re making. If your child is unfamiliar (or struggling) with letter sounds, you’ll want to give The Letter People a try. They’ve been amazing for my five children.

Encouraging Creativity

While structure is important, ensure that there’s room for creative expression. Allow for drawings, stickers, and other means of artistic expression while your child learns how to write.

Celebrating Completion

Make sure to acknowledge completed journal entries with praise or by sharing the work. This validation can be a powerful motivator for little learners.

Final Thoughts Using Kindergarten Journal Prompts

Journaling can be an incredibly enriching activity for kindergarten children. With the right prompts and supportive environment, you can encourage expressive thinkers who see the world in creative ways.

Grab this free kindergarten prompt journal and get your child started on their journaling journey today! Happy writing!

25 Fun Kindergarten Writing & Storytelling Prompts (Free Printable!)

To help you get them writing from the get-go.

Four Note Card Kindergarten Writing Prompts Powerpoint

Most kindergartners are just learning how to put letters and words together, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be writers. What they lack in technical ability, they more than make up for with creativity and imagination. Plus, kindergartners usually have lots to say! Kindergarten writing prompts, often called story starters, help young writers focus on a single topic as they develop writing skills. Topics should be broad enough that every child can easily think of something to write about and interesting enough that they stay engaged. Developing a daily writing routine helps kindergartners develop confidence as they learn to articulate their thoughts in a structured way.

The following writing prompts are designed to spark your kindergartners’ imaginations and get them writing! And they are perfect for in-person or virtual learning.

How to use your Kids Writing Journal

There are so many ways you can use your free printable kids' journal but let me share a few of my favorites. First, the easiest way is to print the entire packet (25 pages), bind it or staple it together, and have your child do one page per day. If you don't have a way to bind it, you can just keep it in any 3-ring binder or folder.

I know not everyone will want to print all pages at once and that's okay. Print the pages as you go! This is another easy way to use the kid's writing journal give your child a new page each day and put the packet together at the end.

Each page has a simple writing prompt (like my best friend is...), a space to draw, and lines to finish the prompt. Use the last 4 pages of the file if you need to add writing space to each prompt. Just make sure to print plenty of those last pages to have on hand for this. It comes in handy with kids in 3rd-5th grade because they usually need to explain more in their writing.

20 Writing Prompts for Kids Printable

What about if you don't want to or can't print the kid's writing journal? Don't worry, I added all 20 writing prompts onto one easy printable sheet! This way you can use your own paper, composition notebook, digital journal, or anything else you already have on hand.

My printables are great for use in a traditional classroom setting, homeschooling, tutoring, or even if you're looking for work to supplement your kids at home. I use this a lot when my sons are on spring break, summer vacation , and winter break to keep up their writing skills and work on penmanship. It really helps!

Creative Writing Prompts of Favorites

We have included a number of fun and creative writing prompts that are a great way to get kids thinking. We have also included a few blank pages in our journal for other writing opportunities.

If your kids are having trouble getting started, I love the first thing is to grab a blank page, and then ask them to write about any of their favorites. Whether it's favorite food (and why) or favorite video games. They should have no problem writing about their favorite things. The most important thing is to just write.

Regardless if they are young kids or older kids, they can write each prompt in simple sentences but complete sentences.

Here are some added favorite journal entries they can start with!

  • favorite things
  • favorite book
  • favorite movies
  • favorite food
  • favorite season
  • favorite place

  • favorite song

What are the Benefits of Writing Prompts in Kindergarten?

There are several benefits of using kindergarten writing prompts with your students. As you implement writing prompts into your daily routine, you'll start to see these benefits and more blossom.

Daily practice with beginning writing and handwriting skills.

By using writing prompts in kindergarten on a daily basis, your students will get meaningful opportunities to practice their beginning writing and handwriting skills.

Writing prompts allow students to work on improving their handwriting skills on wide writing lines while also using proper writing conventions. A picture word bank helps students expand their vocabulary and learn about using words in context.

You can easily differentiate writing prompts based on your students' needs by using options with or without sentence starters.

Encourages creativity.

Kindergarten writing prompts also encourages creativity in your little writers. They get to use their imagination to finish the sentence or write their own sentence or story. It is so fun as a teacher to see how each student interprets a writing prompt differently.

After completing their sentence or story, students get to be the illustrator of their writing piece and draw a picture to go along with their sentence. This also encourages creativity and ties art and fine motor skills into your writing lessons.

Makes real-world connections.

By using writing prompts in kindergarten, you can help your young learners make real-world connections with their writing. The picture word bank and sentence starter can spark conversations about experiences they've had in the real world.

You can also read stories that connect with the writing prompt before completing the activity. Talk about the connections from the book and the writing prompt as they begin to brainstorm, write, and draw.

These conversations and the variety of vocabulary words in the picture word bank will help expose your students to various topics, vocabulary words, and forms of writing.

Creates a consistent routine.

Kindergarten writing prompts are great for creating a consistent daily writing routine. You can use them as a morning work activity, during your writing lessons, or as a daily journal activity for students to complete.

Wherever you choose to fit writing prompts into your day, keep it consistent. This will allow your students to know exactly what is expected of them. These clear expectations will help foster independence in your writers.

Tips and Tricks for Using Kindergarten Writing Prompts

As you get started with kindergarten writing prompts, consider these teacher-tested tips and tricks for implementing them in the most effective way.

Use paper with wide writing lines.

If you've ever seen kindergarten students try to write on paper with narrow writing lines, you know how frustrating that can be for them. It's important to use writing paper with wide writing lines to help them practice proper handwriting techniques.

Using lined story paper is a great way to help students clearly define the top, middle, and bottom lines. This makes it easier for them to write inside the lines. If your students need more support, you can highlight the top and bottom lines. This provides an extra visual aide for them.

Use a spacing tool.

A key writing convention that students practice with kindergarten writing prompts is proper word spacing. To help students visually see where the space should go in between words, you can use a spaceman tool to help with word spacing.

You can also use a tongue depressor as a spacing tool. Students can decorate and personalize their tongue depressor and use it each time they write.

Explicitly teach writing conventions.

When implementing kindergarten writing prompts, it's important to explicitly teach writing conventions.

Hold mini lessons to discuss the proper use of different conventions, such as capitalization, spacing, and punctuation. You can also discuss the importance of matching the illustration to the sentence.

When teaching these writing conventions, model on the whiteboard what proper use of these writing conventions looks like. Introduce students to the different types of punctuation.

Then, you can write sentences correctly and incorrectly to help students identify proper use of writing conventions and sentences that need to be fixed.

Hold individual writing conferences.

Since each student's writing piece will be different with each prompt, it's important to hold individual writing conferences with your students. Sit down one-on-one with each student and read their writing.

Give the student positive praise on their handwriting, illustration, sounding out of words, and use of writing conventions. Give feedback and point out any areas they can improve on. Always end the writing conference on a positive note.

Something as simple as adding a sticker or a star to their writing prompt can make a student's day and encourage them to keep working hard.

How to Implement Kindergarten Writing Prompts

When implementing kindergarten writing prompts, take some time to show students the correct way to use writing prompts and ensure your students are set up for success.

Model how to use writing prompts.

It's important to model how to use the writing prompts correctly. Show your students how to use the picture word bank to choose words to finish their story.

It's a good idea to tell students that it may not make sense to use every word in the word bank. Model how to choose 1 or 2 words to include in their writing. Model how to choose a word and finish the sentence with the story starter.

For students who are ready to write without a sentence starter, you can get them in a small group and model how to choose 2-3 words from the picture word bank to write their sentence or short story.

The great part about kindergarten writing prompts is how easy it is to differentiate instruction and give your students what they need.

Use a variety of writing prompts.

Since using writing prompts in kindergarten is a daily routine, it's crucial to use a variety of writing prompts throughout the month.

This helps the students stay on task and excited about their writing since every day is different. It also gives them exposure to different themes, topics, and writing styles.

By using a variety of writing prompts, you can see student growth over time. This will also help you learn which topics interest them most. Keep each student's writing prompts in a journal to track growth over time.

This serves as a writing portfolio for your students. A writing portfolio is great to bring out at parent teacher conferences to show growth. Send these home at the end of the year as a memento of the year.

Provide visual aides.

Providing visual aides for your students will help them feel more confident in their writing, leading to greater independence.

Provide accessible visual aides for vocabulary words on different topics by using a themed word wall or providing students with a page of vocabulary words with pictures.

It's also a good idea to provide a visual aide to students for important writing conventions and sentence structure. You can write these writing conventions on a whiteboard where all students can see them or create a checklist that students can keep at their desk.

This will help them check their capitalization, punctuation, word spacing, illustrations, etc.

I hope these tips and tricks for implementing writing prompts in kindergarten are helpful. I can't wait to hear how your students' writing skills grow this year. Leave a comment below and tell me about the writing wins in your classroom!
