  • Key takeaways
  • Addition & Subtraction : Adding and subtracting numbers is like solving puzzles and helps us with real-life situations.
  • Word Problems : Solving word problems makes maths fun and helps us become better readers and problem solvers.
  • Place Value : Understanding place value helps us read and write numbers correctly and compare their values.
  • Measurement & Time : Measuring objects and telling time help us understand the world around us and manage our daily routines.
  • Geometry (Shapes) : Recognizing shapes and their properties helps us see the world in a new way and understand how things are put together.

Did you know that ladybugs have spots on their backs?

If a ladybug has 2 spots on its back and it gets 1 more spot, how many spots will the ladybug have in total?

The lady bug will have 3 spots!

Year 2 maths word problems are like fun puzzles that help us use our maths skills to solve real-life situations. They are essential to year 2 maths, and practising them can help us become maths superstars!

  • We can use addition and subtraction to determine how many cookies are left in a jar, how many friends are on the playground, or even how many apples are in a basket.
  • Understanding place value is like being a number detective. It helps us read big numbers and know the value of each digit, so we can count things like how many toys we have or how many days until our birthday.
  • Measuring things and telling time is like being an explorer in the real world. We can measure how tall we are, how long a pencil is, or even how much water is in a glass. And knowing how to read a clock helps us know when it’s time for fun activities or when it’s time to go to bed.
  • Shapes are like building blocks of the world around us. We can learn about squares, triangles, and circles by looking at objects we see every day. It’s like being a shape detective, finding out how many sides and corners they have, and how they fit together like puzzle pieces in year 2 maths questions.

All of these skills are necessary for year 2 maths practice! Use these 45 maths questions to go over important maths skills needed to strengthen your student’s understanding and knowledge.

Today, we are going to practise different year 2 maths skills that cover measurement, addition and subtraction, and more! Once you are done, check your work with our answer sheet!

maths problems solving year 2

Much of their learning will come from exploring with objects to solve problems practically and there are simple things you can do at home to support their development.

How to help at home

You don’t need to be an expert to support your child with maths or help them develop a good sense of number! Here are three simple, but effective learning ideas that you can try with your child using everyday items at home.

1. Partition numbers

Partitioning means to break numbers into parts. Use objects, such as straws grouped in tens, to show numbers split into tens and ones. How many ways can your child find to partition a number?

For example, 54 could be 50 + 4, 40 + 14, 30 + 24, 20 + 34, or 10 + 44.

2. Tell stories

Make up addition and subtraction stories together. For example: Two badgers, three hedgehogs and a toad have a picnic. How many animals are there altogether? Four rabbits join in. How many are there now? Two animals go home. How many are left?

3. Play shops

To help your child get used to the value of different coins and notes, use real money to play shops. Price up some toys and take turns to be the customer who pays and the shopkeeper who works out the change.

You’ll find more activity ideas in our Kids’ activities section .

What your child will learn at school

Number & place value in year 2 (age 6–7).

Then, the tasks become progressively more open and extended. This will ensure that all children are both supported and challenged. It will give all children the excitement of engaging in rich problem-solving!

The 28 Task Families of I See Problem-Solving - Y2 , written by Gareth Metcalfe, cover all areas of the English mathematics curriculum. This corresponds to US Grade 1. To purchase, click on the link below. If you need any assistance with ordering, please email [email protected].

In this paper, we give a solution formula for the two-phase Stokes equations with and without surface tension and gravity over the whole space with a flat interface. The solution formula has already been considered by Shibata and Shimizu. However, we have reconstructed the formula so that we are able to easily prove resolvent and maximal regularity estimates. The previous work required the assumption of additional conditions on normal components. Here, although we consider normal components, the assumption is weaker than before. The method is based on an $ H^\infty $-calculus which has already been applied for the Stokes problems with various boundary conditions in the half-space.

How a 12-Year-Old Girl Is Teaching College Math Online

A 12-year-old Chinese girl is causing a local buzz by teaching college-level math problems online .

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) recently spotlighted an influencer named ‘Gu’ who tackles college-level math problems on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. With 2.9 million followers, Gu has gained significant popularity on the platform.

According to the report, her videos delve into various math problems, encompassing topics from functions to calculus.

Gu’s extraordinary talent in mathematics was nurtured by her keen interest in the subject from a young age. She initiated her video-sharing journey to illustrate her mathematical methods while exploring diverse learning approaches.

Gu’s mother told the media, “Initially, I suggested that she record videos explaining problems to enhance her understanding of math.”

Gu’s first video in 2022 focused on middle school-level math problems, characterized by her innocent and lively tone.

A 2-year-old math enthusiast is going viral for his jaw-dropping number skills.

An adorable toddler named Devan visited the stage of America’s Got Talent , which premieres tonight (May 28), to showcase his math skills for judges Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel.

Devan auditioned for a spot as a contestant this season. While we don’t know if he was successful yet, a preview of his apperance proves that the 2-year-old is a tiny genius.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by America's Got Talent – AGT (@agt)

An audition clip shows the judges asking Devan to first solve more simple math questions—though they are not simple for a 2-year-old. Then they gradually made the equations more challenging. The video doesn’t reveal if Devan answers his final questions correctly. We have to tune in to see how it turns out.

The 2-Year-Old Started Showing Interest In Math At Only 4 Months Old

Devan has been amassing amazed fans with his Instagram and TikTok accounts, Devan Loves Numbers. He currently has almost 900K followers on IG. And he has over 1.3 million on TikTok, which is how he ended up on the show.

“We had posted him on TikTok and it went viral,” Devan’s dad, Duane, told Long Island Press . “One of the producers had seen it and reached out to us saying he thought Devan was a good fit for America’s Got Talent .”

“At first, we thought America’s Got Talent was only for singers and acting performances. And I was not sure how a 2-year-old doing math would be on the show,” he continued. “But, Devan assured us that he would be great.”

Duane shared that his son has been into numbers for nearly his entire life. His parents noticed Devan’s curiosity when he was only a few months old.

“At 4 months old we realized his love for numbers,” Duane continued. “When we were showing him learning shows, if we would change the channel from the math shows, he would start to cry and when we would change it back he would stop.”

The tot is currently mastering subtraction, addition, division, and multiplication. He’s also doing well with Roman numerals and exponents.

“It is never too early to start teaching your child numbers. Devan is proof of that. And we just want to inspire kids, parents, and soon-to-be parents that when you start from an early age this is the result that you will get,” he noted.

Watch the 2-year-old showcase his math skills when America’s Got Talent premieres tonight at 8 PM EST on NBC.

2-year-old Elmont math prodigy 'Baby Dev' appearing on 'America's Got Talent'

A 2-year-old math prodigy from Elmont will be among the acts when NBC's variety competition “America’s Got Talent” returns for its 19th season Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In TikTok videos that have garnered as many as 36 million views apiece, Devan Defreitas, known as Baby Dev, joyfully does mathematics equations — 14 x 12, anyone? — on dry-erase boards, sounding out each number as he does so. One video shows him flawlessly identifying Roman numerals.

Another has him solving word problems: “Mama gave Devan $30 and Dada gave Devan another $10. How much money does Devan have?” With no coaching, he writes “$30 + $10 = $40.” Where numbers are concerned, this pre-K kid could probably compete on “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?”

Dad Duane Defreitas says he still is processing all the attention coming his family’s way —including remote appearances on “CBS Mornings” with Gayle King and NBC’s “The Kelly Clarkson Show” — since the first video went up in September. “Sometimes I'm just kind of like, ‘Oh, it's nothing,’ ” Defreitas, 44, told Newsday. “But then it's like, ‘Wow, is this really happening?’ ”

Defreitas had never had a TikTok account, he said, “but you always hear about TikTok through friends or whatever. That's the thing these young kids are into nowadays. So I said, ‘Hey, why not make one for Devan and see what happens?’ ” The videos went viral and “not too long after that, the producers from AGT reached out to us.”

Defreitas, who also has an 8-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter in Mount Sinai “with my first two kids' mother,” asked that Devan’s mother not be named. But she was, he says, part of that day when they first glimpsed Devan’s instinct for math.

“He had a slight speech delay,” Defreitas said, “so he didn't say ‘Mama, Dada.’ And one day he was watching one of his number videos and they were singing the number-seven song, and he just blurred out, 'Seven! Seven!' ” as his first words. “And his mother and I just looked at each other with our eyes open and we actually caught that on video, too,” when he said it again.

Defreitas, who was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, played football at Flushing High School and later at Marist College in Poughkeepsie. He left that school to get an associate degree at Nassau Community College, he says, and afterward enrolled at Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology. He left there to intern for a fashion company, and when the internship ended, rather than return to school he followed in his father Lincoln’s footsteps as an NYPD officer.

Beginning 2005, Defreitas served at Transit District 20 in Jamaica, Queens. He moved to Hempstead around 2010 and retired from the force in 2014 when “I tore my Achilles tendon while affecting an arrest, when somebody resisted arrest. … I heard a loud pop” and felt a pain “like bowling ball dropped from the sky and fell on my ankle.”

He says he still walks with a limp — “some days are better than others” — and with his retirement pension decided “I'm just going to spend time with my kids and raise my kids. And that's exactly what I do.” He moved to Bay Shore and then to Commack, before settling in Elmont in 2019 — keeping the Commack house to rent out on Airbnb and otherwise use as a second home.

There, Devan “hangs out in the pool. He loves to swim. And there are a lot of farms out there, and he loves animals.”

He also enjoyed being on AGT, his dad says. “He had never been on a stage so I was a little worried how he would react. But he loved the crowd. He loves being cheered on. He loves when we clap for them. So he soaked everything up and loved it.”

Lawrence school board approves $17M capital improvement plan, plus new curriculum resource for elementary math

maths problems solving year 2

The Lawrence school board holds its meeting on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. A sign language interpreter is at right.

The Lawrence school board on Tuesday approved the district’s approximately $17 million capital improvement plan for 2024-25 by a vote of 7-0, and also unanimously approved a five-year purchase agreement for a new curriculum resource for teaching elementary math.

The capital improvement plan, to be funded principally out of the district’s Capital Outlay Fund, is simply an overview of projects — basically a large, yearly to-do list — related to building maintenance, renovation, equipment procurement, technological needs and other items.

As Cynde Frick, the district’s executive director of finance, noted, any particular project under the plan’s umbrella, if it exceeds $20,000, would be formally bid and brought to the board separately for approval.

In a presentation to the board, Chief Operations Officer Larry Englebrick highlighted some of the district’s most pressing needs, such as replacing nine district vehicles, including four student vans for the two high schools and a one-ton box truck for food services, as well as four cargo vans; completing installation of infrastructure that would allow greater internet connectivity; replacing dated computers in middle school labs; replacing aging HVAC and boiler units, as well as worn roofing material at a handful of elementary schools; resurfacing tennis courts at the high schools; leasing copier equipment and other items. Englebrick noted that the particulars of the plan could change as needs arise.

In all, the general breakdown of the $17 million plan approved by the board is as follows: $8.8 million for facilities, $4.6 million for technology, $1.6 million for equipment and furniture, $875,000 for trade wages, $755,000 for discretionary spending at schools and $375,000 for instructional and athletic-related items, such as musical instruments and exercise equipment.

The plan represents an approximately $2 million increase over last year’s plan.

Frick told the board that spending the $17 million would leave nearly $11 million in the district’s capital outlay fund, which is primarily fed by revenue generated by the district’s tax levy of 8 mills. She said the financial organization Moody’s recommends maintaining an unencumbered cash balance of $8 million.

The board also heard a presentation from a group of educators who had been tasked with finding a new elementary math curriculum after the previous curriculum resource, “Math Expressions,” stopped publication and the need arose to address stagnating math performance in elementary schools.

The team researched options for the better part of a year and eventually landed on a hands-on program called “Open Up Math.” Over 70 local educators in five buildings participated in the pilot program this past spring and reported rave reviews to the board, with one instructor, Cynthia Emery of Quail Run Elementary, telling board members her young students were now proudly calling themselves “math nerds.”

The nonprofit’s curriculum program, which is said to “center equity,” focuses on a conceptual vs. a procedural approach to mathematics and prizes problem-solving and math “discussion” over more traditional methods like rote memorization.

The team also praised the program’s ability to be “customized” and its emphasis on professional development for teachers.

“It hasn’t been since 2010 (that) we went through a curriculum review in elementary math,” Denise Johnson, director of Elementary Curriculum, told the board, before the board approved the purchase agreement for a total cost of $723,849.

Unionized classified staff members in red shirts attend the Lawrence school board meeting on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, where they urged the board to support a wage increase of $1.20 an hour.

Before the business portion of the meeting, the board heard from unionized classified staff members, primarily paraeducators, who pressed board members to address low wages in their ranks. Dozens of union members attended the meeting, and a handful urged the board during general public comment to support raising the hourly wage by $1.20.

Union members who said they made between $20,000 and $30,000 a year for demanding and essential work spoke of chronic understaffing and high turnover due to low wages.

As contract negotiations continue, board president Kelly Jones acknowledged the group’s presence and pleas.

“I want to recognize all the red shirts in the room,” she said, referring to the union members’ matching T-shirts. “We see you and appreciate you.”

Superintendent Anthony Lewis at meeting’s end also emphasized that staff wages were a priority for him.
