Data911 Introduces Multi-Touch Display Designed for Emergency Vehicles

Over the last year, integrated mobile solutions provider Data911 has been working with a group of law enforcement and fire service agencies to design the M7+ Display expressly for first responders.

Over the last year, integrated mobile solutions provider Data911 has been working with a group of law enforcement and fire service agencies to beta test the next evolution of its in-car M7 Display, the M7+ Multi-Touch Display. The results of these tests were so successful that, once it officially became available December 2015, virtually every participating department opted to purchase the M7+ Display, expressly designed for first responders.

Among the valuable feedback Data911 received from these tests was a list of what agencies decided were the most beneficial features and functions of the new 12-inch M7+ Display. First and foremost, the zero bezel (edge-to-edge) multi-touch screen was a key differentiator of this sunlight-readable, fixed-mount display.

Next on the list was the display's ability to support 5-finger touch, including the gloved fingers of public safety personnel. And for those who preferred inputting with a touch pen, the M7+ Display was also compatible with Data911's optional non-powered stylus, which requires no batteries or electrical cords. The touch screen supports touch, swipe, flick, or pinch and zoom, regardless of whether or not gloves are worn.

The M7+ Display also features three dedicated, programmable, backlit buttons. These buttons can be used for functions such as emergency calls, toggling between applications, Stealth Mode, Monitor Blank, and more.

High on the list of priorities agencies deemed crucial to keeping personnel safe was another set of features offered by the new M7+ Multi-Touch Display: Blank on Motion and Stealth Mode. While officers and firefighters are driving, any distraction can be dangerous. That's why Data911 added automatic Motion Display Blank to disallow use while driving. But, because Data911 knows there are occasions when responders require immediate access to vital information while on the move, they incorporated a user override with pre-set time limits. However, in compliance with departmental policies, all "un-blanks" are always logged for the record.

Stealth Mode is an entirely different kind of display blank and can sometimes mean life or death to law enforcement officers. With a single touch, all function buttons, indicator LEDs and keyboard lights can be blacked out completely when police vehicles must remain undetected in covert situations.

Law and Fire each have unique needs, but both demand equipment tough enough to survive harsh environments. Agencies who tested Data911's M7+ Display recognized the importance of its rugged features, including built-in thermal protection to withstand high temperatures, and chemically strengthened touch glass that exceeded all previous versions. Another feature of note was the addition of Impact Safety Bumpers to the M7+, which safeguards both the display and vehicle occupants in the event of a collision.

Last, but nowhere near least on the agencies list of top M7+ Display features was the integrated Bluetooth Transceiver, which supports wireless keyboards, fingerprint readers and other Bluetooth devices, without the need for an additional antenna.

The M7+ Multi-Touch Display was engineered to be compatible with Data911's M7 CPU as well as with all next generation CPUs. Most of all, it was engineered to make the job of saving lives as safe and effective as possible, both now and in the future.

Data911 Introduces the First Multi-Touch Display Specifically Designed for Emergency Vehicles

An innovative in-car display has emerged.

Although in-vehicle displays and tablets certainly exist, none were developed with the particular needs of police and fire personnel in mind. Most were originally meant for point-of-sale, warehousing or other universal uses and then were later “adapted” for emergency services.

Meanwhile, an innovative in-car display has emerged which is vastly different from anything else because it was expressly designed for first responders. Over the last year, Data911–the premier integrated mobile solutions provider–has been working with a group of law enforcement and fire service agencies to beta test the next evolution to their M7 Display, the M7+ Multi-Touch Display. A nationally uniform 911 data system can provide 911 and community leaders with this essential information. It will assist with strategic planning, governance decisions and operational improvements at all levels of the nation’s 911 systems. While 911 data is regularly collected, challenges still exist in comparing data across states and even jurisdictions.

So what does a nationally uniform 911 data system look like? This is the work of the 911 DataPath Strategic Plan , which describes the characteristics of an ideal future environment where data can be exchanged on a scheduled, ad hoc or near real-time basis.

The plan has five strategic goals:

1.     Data uniformity

2.     Automated data-handling

3.     Role-based information-sharing

4.     Sustainable vital support mechanisms

5.     Data-savvy 911 professionals

The work of the 911DataPath project is being done in the context of Next Generation 911 (NG911) . An NG911 environment at PSAPs/ECCs enables features and functions not available in the legacy 911 environment. This includes the ability to transfer calls and share call data between all the nation’s PSAPs.

In this environment, data consistency and uniformity take on special significance, as do cooperation and collaboration among PSAPs. While standards development organizations (SDOs) have completed standards for NG911 system infrastructure components, to date there is no national uniform set of 911 data elements used by PSAPs to receive, process and share 911 data, hampering efforts to provide consistent data for 911 decision-making at all levels of government. Simply put, the completion of a national uniform 911 data system is essential to the advancement of 911.

What's Happening Now

From November 2021 through October 2023, the NTHSA National 911 Program, conducted a pilot project to create the first 911 data-exchange model at local, state and regional levels.

The strategic plan’s first goal—data uniformity—has two components: building a common language by creating a data dictionary and building a data-sharing (or exchange) framework through the use of regional, state and federal data exchanges.

Specific outcomes of the pilot included:

A highly visible 911 landscape:  Demonstrate a nationwide view of operational 911 systems, resources and assets.

More informed decision-making:  Provide easy data discovery and access as well as meaningful visualization and reporting.

Multijurisdictional collaboration:  Provide seamless interoperability and shared situational awareness.

More efficient operations:  Provide data uniformity as well as automated collection, use, analysis, and exchange of 911 data.

A Call to Action

The public safety community—and the 911 community in specific—must support a uniform method for collecting data at the local, regional, state, tribal and federal levels for better-informed 911 and emergency-response decision-making. At a minimum, this ongoing initiative should:

Drive consensus regarding standards used to define terminology used in the data-collection process

Create an enhanced data dictionary that associations, 911 centers, and vendors will use to ensure the ability to generate data that is measurable and universally understandable

Encourage consensus regarding data collection and sharing to include agreement on:

Standardized language and definitions

How data is collected, stored  and exchanged

How data is used and by whom

How data is secured

How to train personnel to interpret the data

Patents; Saving time in an emergency, a computer service stores household data for display in 911 calls.

By Sabra Chartrand

  • Feb. 8, 1999

IN case of a fire or accident, the first thing people often do is call 911. It is reassuring to know that a trained operator is standing by to help. How much better might it be if the operator already knew who was calling, where the caller lived, how to find a child's bedroom in the caller's burning house or what to tell paramedics about any drugs the caller was taking?

Firefighters, the police and emergency medical teams need this information, and 911 operators must be trained to elicit those details calmly from callers who are frequently panicky. Thinking it would be more efficient for people to provide that information in advance, Robert Pons and Jay Snider have patented an emergency service they named 911-Plus.

Berks and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania and Ocean County, N.J., began testing the new system late last year.

''Typically, when someone calls 911, they're not in a very relaxed state,'' Mr. Pons said. ''Yet 911 operators need to ask for important information. This information is now displayed on a screen when the person calls 911.''

To sign up for 911-Plus, a subscriber registers his phone number with Mr. Pons's company, Lifesafety Solutions, pays a $2.95 monthly fee added to his local telephone bill, and provides personal information about the people living or working in the place served by the phone number.

''When a consumer places a 911 call, two things happen without him doing anything but dialing,'' Mr. Pons said. ''The consumer has the opportunity to preregister important information about himself, his household and family members that is automatically transmitted to the 911 operator's computer screen.

''It could be a pre-existing medical condition, or simple directions to the home,'' he said. ''Sometimes it's not obvious where the home's entrance is. If there's a pre-existing medical condition, the paramedics will know about it. You could even list the location of a child's bedroom upstairs and to the right, for example.''

Those details are stored on a data base at Lifesafety Solutions in Bridgeport, Pa. When a 911 operator receives a call, the information they provide is added to the subcriber information already stored in the computer and now transmitted to the screen; the operator does not have to look for it.

''We're directly connected to the community 911 system,'' Mr. Pons said. ''Ours is proprietary software installed in two ways -- either as a dedicated screen in front of the operator, or as a pop-up window connected with their software. The operator sees it come up, and it says this caller is a 911-Plus subscriber.''

The system also allows a subscriber to register the name of three relatives or friends who should be notified. Lifesafety Solutions will try to reach at least one of them.

''One of our operators begins to call to notify the person listed,'' Mr. Pons continued. ''We attempt to notify the emergency contact for 24 hours. For example, if you have children and the babysitter calls 911, then Mom or Dad can be immediately notified at their place of work by pager, or called on their cell phone.''

Mr. Pons said his company's service uses a private computer network to insure confidentiality. He said he hoped to expand the service beyond the three counties now testing it, and to car and cellular telephones.

Mr. Pons, who is president of Lifesafety Solutions, and Mr. Snider, a shareholder, received patent number 5,805,670.

Radio Controls On Steering Wheels

Fiddling with radio dials while driving can be distracting and even dangerous. Three Chrysler Corporation inventors have won a patent for a remote-control device that moves the buttons for a car's audio system to the back of the steering wheel.

The three -- James Repp, Lawrence Achram and George Zamplas -- designed the audio control panel so that drivers can press the channel, volume and operating buttons with their fingertips while their hands grip the steering wheel.

The buttons are embedded in the rear surface of the cross-section of the wheel, just behind the place the driver pushes to sound the car's horn. The driver can push the audio buttons with his hands at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock on the steering wheel.

The invention, which belongs to Chrysler, now DaimlerChrysler, won patent number 5,721,541.

A Drug Is Proposed For Use With Viagra

Selectus Pharmaceuticals Inc. has filed a patent application for a drug that it says may prevent heart attacks during sexual activity for people who take Viagra. The company says that in clinical trials, the drug, esprolol, reduced heart rate and blood pressure during physical exertion.

Selectus hopes to patent esprolol for use with Viagra because it says that heart medication like nitroglycerin cannot be taken with Viagra.

The Food and Drug Administration has found no link between Viagra and heart attacks, but a press release issued by Selectus asserted that 77 men had died of heart failure while taking Viagra.

Do not expect to see patented esprolol for safer sex on the market anytime soon, however; the drug has further clinical trials to undergo before winning F.D.A. approval, and applications take an average of 18 months' examination at the Patent and Trademark Office before receiving a patent.

Feature Article: Digital Mapping Helps First Responders Better Navigate Inside Buildings

Agencies are using S&T-funded Mappedin to find their way quickly during critical incidents in schools and public buildings.

Light colored indoor school floor plan on a light gray background. The floor plan is 3D. It shows multiple rectangles and subdivisions representing classrooms labeled with room numbers and various offices. In the upper left part a gym with a basketball floor can be distinguished as well as girls’ and boys’ locker rooms. On the right side of the plan visible are the cafeteria, library and the computer lab with various colorful labels with symbols for phone, the nurse’s room, emergency exits, fire extinguishers and more.

GPS systems may get first responders to incident scenes fast, but navigating buildings’ complex mazes of hallways and corridors in potentially chaotic or low-visibility situations can be tricky. Relying on hard copy or digital building blueprints can be cumbersome or even outdated, adding precious seconds when time is of the essence.

A solution, brought to you by the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and digital indoor map navigator Mappedin, was completed in 2022 and has since flourished. The online Mappedin mapmaking subscription, which can transform floor plans into interactive and easily maintainable digitized maps, was recently launched and is currently being used by both response agencies and corporate clients. With easy-to-use mapping tools and data, Mappedin provides high-quality 3D map creation, data maintenance, and map sharing to city executives, building owner operators and first responders to make and deliver maps for a variety of safety-related situations—from advance preparation and planning to assistance during emergency incidents.

“With Mappedin, first responders can quickly determine the interior layout of structures before entering a building to make informed decisions,” said Anthony Caracciolo, the S&T program manager who led this effort. “Mappedin assists them with identifying where interior rooms, doors, stairs, key equipment and hazardous materials are located and enables them to possess indoor awareness of a facility before entering.”

Mappedin provides intelligent digitization of floor plans from various sources (e.g., computer-aided design drawings, PDF documents, photographs) and maintains a digital reserve of 3D interactive maps accessible on tablets and cell phones. These maps can be marked up and shared via a private link accessible only to authorized personnel.

To save time in mapmaking, Mappedin leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to create high-quality 3D interactive indoor maps from uploaded floor plan images in 0.5 minutes to 3 minutes. The tool also uses LiDAR, a remote sensing method, to create floor plans from scratch. With an iPhone Pro or iPad Pro and the Mappedin iOS app, users can scan their indoor environment and turn the data into a digital map, which they can further edit and customize by labeling specific rooms and areas and adding attributes such as descriptions, photographs and links.

S&T initially funded Mappedin Inc. in 2019 to develop the indoor mapping tool (then called Response) after S&T's First Responder Resource Group indicated this type of technology was a top need. S&T’s goal was to help responders quickly navigate indoor floor plans in real-time when responding to incidents. Mappedin enables point-to-point wayfinding, like an indoor GPS, and is available to first responders and local governments as a licensed cloud-based service. S&T and Mappedin demonstrated the software in 2022 , when first responders assessed the prototype’s efficiency and recommended improvements before commercialization. First responders found it better than existing technologies and liked its compatibility with many existing software platforms. Then, S&T and Mappedin further improved the software based on feedback from U.S. and Canadian first responders and local governments.

Public schools and fire departments are among users

Mappedin is already in use successfully. Since its official launch in September 2023, more than 4,000 user accounts have been created.

A man’s left hand holds a tablet showing Mappedin floor plan of a building. While his right hand is holding a pen, his finger is touching the tablet’s screen.

Many of Mappedin’s new customers are public schools and fire departments for whom mapping services are free. To provide life-saving technology to schools and first responders, two former firefighters have integrated Mappedin maps into their school safety product, AIKI ClassroomSAFE. The app provides situational awareness and a comprehensive view of other responding agencies, students, and the real-time status of classrooms. According to experienced firefighter and AIKI co-founder, Damian McKeon, Mappedin has taken a multi-hour mapping process down to a couple of minutes.

Some forward-thinking schools in the U.S. and Canada are also looking to use Mappedin. Three pilot Canadian cities – Orangeville, Kitchener and Waterloo–have already adopted the tool to digitize paper floor plans for a variety of building types for pre-planning and educational purposes.

Also, first responders in 911 incident dispatch will be able to access Mappedin-created maps within their safety platform for precise geolocation. By providing Mappedin’s accurate geo-located annotations of key safety equipment before the trucks arrive on scene, the 911 dispatch can be prioritized as the first point of contact. According to Dain Bolling, Founder of Pure Wireless LLC, Mappedin easily creates spatially accurate maps suitable for first responders during critical incidents.

Moreover, efforts are underway to map an entire Florida county. Mappedin is accelerating its Maps for Good initiative to address the needs of schools and first responders. Eligible participants will receive no- to low-cost indoor mapping. “Indoor maps are crucial for situational awareness in built environments, and Mappedin is proud to be part of the solution,” said Hongwei Liu, co-founder and CEO at Mappedin. “With Maps for Good, we’re putting AI-powered indoor mapping directly into the hands of front-line professionals, giving them purpose-built tools to do their jobs and keep people safe.”

Mappedin could be integrated with other tools

The Mappedin free subscription is available for schools and responders, where anyone is encouraged to create their own maps. The paid Plus subscription, released in February 2024, and the Pro subscription, coming later this year, add advanced capabilities, including integration with other tools.

“One such possible integration is with the S&T-developed gunshot detection system that detects and alerts police of gunshots,” said Caracciolo. “If integrated with Mappedin, police would not only be alerted of the gunshots, but they could also receive an interior map of a building depicting where the gunshots are occurring, thus enabling police officers to engage the shooter and locate and start treating victims as soon as possible.”

Additionally, corporate customers, such as airports, stadiums, and office buildings are also using Mappedin for things like complex mapping, wayfinding, and custom integrations.

“Ultimately,” Caracciolo added, “S&T invested in Mappedin to equip first responders with the best tool to pre-plan and navigate building interiors in emergencies.”

What Is Apple's Ultra Retina XDR Display on the iPad Pro?

Apple has a new fancy word for the OLED technology it uses on the 2024 iPad Pros.

Quick Links

What is an ultra retina xdr display, how ultra retina xdr differs from liquid retina xdr displays, is ultra retina xdr better than super retina xdr on iphones, key takeaways.

  • Ultra Retina XDR is Apple's fancy word for its tandem OLED display technology introduced in the 2024 iPad Pro models.
  • Unlike traditional OLED displays, the iPad Pros stack two OLED panels together to achieve a higher full-screen brightness.
  • Ultra Retina XDR is an improvement over the Liquid Retina XDR display on the older 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but it's on par with the Super Retina XDR display on iPhones.

One of the highlighting features of the 2024 iPad Pro lineup is the all-new Ultra Retina XDR display. We're already seen Apple's Liquid Retina XDR and Super Retina XDR displays, but what sets this one apart? Let's find out.

Apple finally switched to OLED displays for its 2024 iPad Pro models. The outgoing 12.9-inch iPad Pro model featured a Liquid Retina XDR display that used mini-LED technology. However, instead of the Super Retina XDR moniker we're familiar with on iPhones, Apple has a new fancy word: Ultra Retina XDR.

Apple's Ultra Retina XDR display is unlike any other traditional OLED screen—including the one on iPhones. The company uses tandem OLED display technology, where two OLED panels are stacked on top of each other to achieve a higher full-screen brightness. The M4 chip manages the brightness and colors of both panels simultaneously.

As a result, the 2024 iPad Pros can deliver 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR content, up from 600 nits on the outgoing model. Peak brightness for HDR content remains the same at 1,600 nits, but OLED technology offers several benefits over mini-LED, which we'll discuss next.

If you own an iPad with a Liquid Retina XDR display, you may have noticed a blooming effect when viewing white text against a black background. This effect creates a white halo around white elements, especially in high-contrast scenes.

This is not an issue on Apple's Ultra Retina XDR displays, as OLED panels allow individual pixel control, resulting in perfect blacks. In darker scenes, the pixels effectively turn off, significantly enhancing contrast.

Furthermore, OLED displays have self-emitting pixels, so they don't need a dedicated backlight like LCDs. This contributes to the iPad Pro's slim design, measuring just 5.3mm for the 11-inch model and 5.1mm for the 13-inch model.

The Ultra Retina XDR display brings some other minor upgrades, like dynamically lowering the refresh rate to 10Hz compared to the previous 24Hz. While this should help save some power, don't expect it to make a significant difference.

Apple has been using Super Retina XDR displays since the iPhone 11 Pro in 2019. But how do they compare to the new Ultra Retina XDR display?

For starters, iPhone displays don't use tandem OLED technology. Theoretically, the Ultra Retina XDR display is more efficient and may even last longer without experiencing OLED burn-in . That's because the two panels effectively work at a lower voltage while providing the same brightness, meaning it will take longer for each panel to experience burn-in.

You won't notice much difference in brightness and overall contrast, as Apple advertises the same 2,000,000:1 contrast for both the iPhone 15 Pro and the M4 iPad Pro. The iPhone 15 Pro can achieve a higher brightness of 2,000 nits outdoors and has the same 1,000 nits brightness for SDR content.

Apple's major achievement here is maintaining the same level of performance with a larger screen, which is far more challenging.

The 2024 iPad Pro offers many upgrades besides the all-new Ultra Retina XDR display. While these advancements sound tempting, if you already have an iPad with an M-series chip, know that it's still more than capable, and upgrading might not be the best idea.

What’s Going On With Tranq?

Xylazine is coursing through the illicit drug supply. here’s what it does—and why it’s not the main concern..

Xylazine, also known as “tranq,” is apparently wreaking havoc in the United States. Health departments have detected the substance in black-market fentanyl in New Mexico , California, West Virginia , and—well, almost every state . It’s been associated with overdose deaths in Philadelphia and elsewhere across the country . It has also crossed the ocean: A new study from King’s College London shows that xylazine is turning up in fake marijuana vapes, knockoff codeine, and Valium pills.

Veterinarians use xylazine on its own for sedation, muscle relaxation, and analgesia. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but only for those cases and explicitly only for use in animals. When it’s mixed with fentanyl and used by humans, it can make for a dangerous combination. In fact, many media outlets have started call it a “zombie drug” because of the effects it can have: It can sedate its users, and can lead to large, rotting wounds if used frequently.

Here, we break down what’s happening, the main concerns that experts have about its prevalence, and why they say this scary-sounding drug isn’t the main thing they’re worried about.

If It’s for Animals, How Does It Get Into Fentanyl?

Drug dealers have been mixing it with heroin since at least the early 2010s, says Jeanmarie Perrone, the director of the Center for Addiction Medicine and Policy at the University of Pennsylvania, “but it was pretty clinically silent, perhaps because it was in lower concentrations than what we’re seeing now.” Basically: It went under the radar for a while. And now it’s being added to opioids.

Why … Would Anyone Add It at All?

Simple logistics play a role here: Adding something to fentanyl makes it possible to administer. A typical dose of fentanyl is in the sub-milligram range, essentially a pinhead amount. “If I sold you that, you couldn’t see it, you couldn’t use it,” explains Lewis Nelson, a medical toxicologist and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Mixing these microscopic amounts with something allows users to keep the small doses.

Usually, that something is sugars and starches. Xylazine, as a mix-in, has effects of its own. It’s often called an adulterant because it’s added with intentionality—it doesn’t just carry the fentanyl, it adds potentially appealing psychoactive properties. Xylazine can bolster the effects of opioids. “It’s basically sought to increase the overall euphoria or high that’s experienced with fentanyl,” says Kim Janda, a professor in chemistry and immunology at Scripps Research Institute in California.

OK, but Other Stuff Is Happening. What Happens When Xylazine Has Negative Effects?

The main adverse effect of xylazine goes back to its intended purpose: sedation. Xylazine has a faster onset of sedation than fentanyl, says Nelson. That sedation is commonly compared to being very very drunk, to the point where people don’t feel comfortable or in control of their body anymore, explains Claire Zagorski, a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas who recently co-authored a paper on reducing the harms of xylazine.

And being sedated for a really long time can cause some health problems.

“We are seeing folks that are getting bed sores, for example, just because they aren’t moving for hours on end,” says Zagorski. “It’s causing this damage and breakdown of the skin.”

Users also report skin ulcers, and not just a little pimple: In extreme cases, people lose chunks of tissue on their arms and legs because of it. Those who use drugs intravenously can develop infections, so that isn’t necessarily something new, but the way these wounds look and progress is very different, says Perrone.

Researchers aren’t exactly sure what’s causing the wounds, but Perrone suggests it could have to do with frequency of use. Lots of injections can lead to scabs that itch , and itching can lead to wound progression. “People with more occasional use tend not to have the wounds,” she adds.

Another theory is that these wounds are directly related to xylazine’s ability to constrict blood vessels, making it hard for blood to pass through tissue. Zagorski thinks it seems unlikely that the wounds are behaviorally driven, as there are black areas of dead tissue at places like users’ fingers and toes, again suggesting it could have to do with poor blood flow. But again, experts aren’t sure.

Is It As Deadly As Fentanyl?

Probably not. There isn’t really good data on fatality rates due to use in the illegal drug supply. One of the things that muddies the picture is that xylazine is rarely found on its own. Police in Seattle did recently find it being sold for the first time as a standalone pill, but in most cases it is used in conjunction with fentanyl or other opioids. And while there are many reports of “xylazine-associated” or “xylazine-involved” deaths, that doesn’t necessarily mean that xylazine was the direct killer, says Nelson.

But there is reason to think that xylazine isn’t the direct culprit. Zagorski points out that there are examples of people who work in the veterinary world who have overdosed on just xylazine. Even in those cases, it was generally not fatal. One very important difference between xylazine and fentanyl: “It doesn’t shut down that drive to breathe like opioids do,” she says.

If It’s Not Fatal, What Are Some of the Main Concerns?

Many of the people who are taking xylazine-laced fentanyl are unhoused. “It’s so saturated into the opioid supply,” Zagorski says. “So we’re finding this whole new spate of problems related to people being sedated, particularly if they’re unhoused and they can’t get somewhere safe to be sleepy.”

Not to mention, the wounds present a major issue during treatment. “Facilities decline patients because of their wounds, which leads to a bigger treatment gap and progression of wounds because of that barrier of waiting for a bed somewhere where someone can handle your wound problem,” says Perrone. If wounds are left untreated, it can lead to infection and further problems down the line.

I’ve Heard That Narcan Does Not Work on Tranq. That Seems Bad.

When people overdose on opioids, they take so much that it can stop their breathing. Naloxone, also known by its brand name, Narcan , essentially blocks the receptor that opioids act on, getting them to breathe again. However, xylazine isn’t an opioid. “Naloxone specifically talks just to opioid receptors,” says Zagorski, “so it’s like the wrong key in a lock.”

But because most products are a combination of both xylazine and fentanyl, it’s still worthwhile to administer Narcan to try to reverse the opioid effects. “If I give you naloxone, it will make you breathe again,” Nelson explains. It’s just that if there’s Xylazine in the mix, “it will not wake you up.”

If Narcan has already been administered, Zagorski encourages people to shake the person, call their name, rub their chest, and try to get them to wake up from the sedation.

Is There a Way to Test for Xylazine? And Is There a Treatment?

Yes, there are test strips that use the exact same kind of technology as pregnancy tests. But the problem is that given the prevalence of xylazine in the illicit drug supply, it might be hard to find a product that doesn’t have any, says Nelson.

In terms of treatment, Janda is currently working on a vaccine to block xylazine’s sleep-inducing effects. Janda and his team recently published a paper suggesting that their vaccine could reverse xylazine-induced behavior in mice, and are hoping to replicate findings in humans. But an actual vaccine is years away.

Some patients have also described xylazine withdrawal syndrome, which researchers are still trying to parse. “We’re still looking to characterize that and see how it might need to be treated differently than fentanyl,” says Perrone.

How Worried Should I Be About This?

If you’re not a drug user, your risk is quite low. It’s not the kind of thing that can affect you if you happen to be close to it. “If you touch it and lick your hand, that’s a problem,” Nelson says. “But just the mere presence in space that you’re in, ambient exposure, is not a problem.”

Interestingly enough, Nelson says some data suggests xylazine has a protective factor. People who present in hospitals with fentanyl and xylazine have a lower rate of requiring CPR and cardiac arrest. And, Nelson says, it probably does not increase addiction.

As with any emerging health crisis, experts emphasized the picture is still forming and more research is needed. But as it stands right now, they see fentanyl as the larger issue.

“You see headlines that xylazine is the most dangerous drug in the world,” Nelson says. “In reality, the 800-pound gorilla here is fentanyl. Xylazine is just a bystander.”
