How to Do the Work: Dr. Nicole LePera on Self-Deception and the Role of Self-Deception in Ethical Decision-Making

“Most of our platitudes notwithstanding, self-deception remains the most difficult deception,” wrote Joan Didion in her luminous essay, “On Self-Respect” (available here in its glorious entirety at Vogue ). The problems of self-deception, honesty with oneself, and self-betrayal are as old as time and literature. Look no further than Hamlet to see a character weaving a web of self-deception in figurative language. Dr. Nicole LePera, in her new book, How to Do the Work finds a new language to describe the same problem. Didion called it self-deception. LaPera calls it self-betrayal. It comes to the same in the end. Self-deception may be one of the more important forms of deception when it comes to white collar crime, and other types of criminal behavior. Ann E. Tenbrunsel and David M. Messick in “ Ethical Fading: The Role of Self-Deception in Unethical Behavior ” write that self deception “involves an avoidance of the truth, the lies that we tell to, and the secrets we keep from, ourselves… We are creative narrators of stories that tend to allow us to do what we want and that justify what we have done. We believe our stories and thus believe that we are objective about ourselves.” One of the ways in which language and storytelling can shape moral behavior is through the use of euphemisms. Tenbrunsel and Messick show how euphemistic language like the idea of “collateral damage” in military campaigns, obscures the moral impact of what’s really taking place: civilian deaths; and they show how business terminology like “right sizing” to describe layoffs obscures the human cost. As a legal content writer I often encounter scenarios where the nuances of language matter. In everything from personal injury law to divorce law to criminal law, how you tell the story matters.

I had to look closely at my own storytelling while reading Dr. Nicole LePera’s book. I have to admit that Dr. Nicole LePera’s How to Do the Work is the type of book I’ll hide in another book jacket because I don’t want people around me knowing I’m reading it. The source of this embarrassment is something worthy of exploring. After all, Didion wrote “The dismal fact is that self-respect has nothing to do with the approval of others—who are, after all, deceived easily enough.” One can just as easily clothe LePera’s book in the skin of Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem and call it a day.

I am not alone in admitting this desire to hide certain types of self-help books under the jackets of more acceptable, intellectual fare. It protects the ego, after all. But perhaps we could all benefit from a little humility.

While euphemism may facilitate certain forms of self-deception, facility with language in itself isn’t a defense against the most damaging forms of self-deception. As Shakespeare showed us with Hamlet , intellect and skill with words are hardly charms against self-deception, and actually, the more skillful one is in wielding these tools, the more easily one might deceive the self. Self-betrayal is easier when you have the ability to argue both sides of a decision equally well. How often have I seduced myself with my own syllogisms, while literally falling off cliffs? I climbed rocks for over ten years. This is not a metaphor.

How to Do the Work isn’t some Henry James deep dive into the essential self, nor is it an Oliver Sacks meditation on the mind. It offers readers a kind of Cliff’s Notes introduction to mental hygiene and attachment theory.

Attachment theory is the idea that our earliest relationships in life, the ones we form with our parents when we are infants, have the capacity to shape our attachment for the rest of our lives. There are basically four different types of attachment: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized. Those who are securely attached generally feel safe in their relationships. They explore the world, and return to the safe base of their attachments, knowing that people are there for them and that people care. Anxiously attached people cling to other people, and don’t feel comfortable exploring the world on their own. They fear the loss of other people. Avoidant people tend to be extremely self-reliant, and express anxiety when a relationship gets too close, or when loved ones expect more from them. And disorganized attachment is a mix of avoidant and anxious, and often involves a mix of alcohol and drug dependence (the replacement of connection with addiction). The attachment styles formed in the first couple of years of our lives, can follow us for the rest of our lives.

LePera does a good job summarizing the attachment styles, and helping her readers explore which type of attachment style might play a role in current relationship patterns. The book offers its readers simple and humble exercises that LePera claims worked for her and for others. The fact that I couldn’t bring myself to complete these simple writing tasks speaks volumes about me.

Perhaps my desire to hide How to Do the Work stems from my lack of humility. It takes great humility to accept help and to seek it. It can take courage to be so humble.

LePera’s solutions are simple in theory, but they are incredibly difficult to actualize in practice. She writes: “To truly actualize change, you have to engage in the work of making new choices every day.” Sounds easy enough, but try building new habits or breaking bad ones and tell me how it goes. The simplest solutions are often the most difficult to implement. Tell Hamlet to forgive Claudius. Tell him to run away with Ophelia and admit his love. Tell him that he’s creating false dichotomies when he frames the choice as one between suicide or murder. Tell him that he can let it all go. Tell me how that works out.

The same holds true in business practice and white collar crime. As Tenbrunsel and Messick explain, the “slippery slope of decision making” can occur when a company assumes that if past actions were ethical, current similar actions are also ethical. Illegal practices, practices that damage the environment, and practices that damage other people can become routine or even considered acceptable within an organization. “…when a practice has become routine, it is ordinary, mundane, and acceptable.” As behavior moves closer to criminality, a person or organization may not be able to see “the incremental steps we take down the road of unethical behavior.” Even as I write this, the toxic products of billion-dollar companies are being sprayed near schools.

As for me, I actually knew most of the tools I read in LePera’s How to do the Work . Have I implemented them? To be or not to be , was always the question, was it not?

In “On Self-Respect” Didion wrote: “In brief, people with self-respect exhibit a certain toughness, a kind or moral nerve…character—the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life—is the source from which self-respect springs.” LePera gets at the same thing, but in different words: “This acceptance of choice in our health and well-being is the first takeaway that I hope stays with you as you continue forward in your own journey.”

It’s sounds seductively easy, does it not—to accept the fact that one always has a choice, that one always must accept responsibility for one’s own life. Try doing it for one week, though. Try not blaming other people for your poor choices. Try taking responsibility.

In corporate culture, this kind of failure to take responsibility also works the same way. When the focus is on profits and shareholders, it’s easy to pass the responsibility on to the shareholders. If an executive does something in the best interest of the shareholders, and it turns out to be unethical or even criminal, the decision-maker can all too easily blame the shareholders for his lapse of judgement.

But what follows from these insights? Didion wrote that it comes down to discipline, “a habit of mind that cannot be faked.” LePera puts it more simply: “You cannot eat better, stop drinking, love your partner, or improve yourself in any way until you become transparent to yourself.” Didion would probably add that you should be “willing to invest something.” She explained that a person with self-respect “may not play at all, but when they do play, they know the odds.” But Didion was quick to note that discipline that isn’t in service to one’s higher values or goals, isn’t discipline at all. Rote exercises are just that. One needs to know oneself before putting discipline to a desired end. An arrow shot from a bow without a clear aim will land just about anywhere. To get any good, you’ll need to aim.

But how does one develop “aim?”

LePera calls it intuition. She advises her readers to “Learn how to spend time alone, to sit still, to really hear your intuition and witness your entire Self—even, and especially the darkest parts you’d most like to keep hidden.”

The value of this work is everything and the fruit of this labor is to have everything, Didion explains. “To have that sense of one’s intrinsic worth which, for better or for worse, constitutes self-respect, is to potentially have everything: the ability to discriminate, to love and to remain indifferent. To lack it is to be locked within oneself, paradoxically incapable of either love or indifference.”

The consequences at failing at this task are immense. Failing at the task leaves us empty. We become hungry ghosts wandering the world. Didion writes: “ If we do not respect ourselves, we are on the one hand forced to despise those who have so few resources as to consort with us, so little perception as to remain blind to our fatal weaknesses. On the other, we are peculiarly in thrall to everyone we see, curiously determined to live out—since our self-image is untenable—their false notions of us.”

In business a company in thrall to its shareholders may lose its moral compass. In business and in life, value is not found in the bottom-line alone.

Self-respect stems from authenticity that comes from within, not from performative actions that arise because we want to please others. In “On Self-Respect” Didion is ultimately writing about boundaries that arise from authentic self-knowledge. LePera’s How to do the Work calls for the same, but with more words and with a little more guidance.

In opening her chapter called “The Power of Belief” LePera writes, “It’s been said that we tell ourselves stories in order to live.” That’s a direct Didion quote, but LePera doesn’t credit Didion. Maybe she forgot the source. I didn’t. LePera’s book is infused with the spirit of Joan Didion. Maybe I didn’t need to hide How to Do the Work under my Slouching Towards Bethlehem jacket after all.

How To Do The Work Summary

1-Sentence-Summary: How To Do The Work is a go-to guide that teaches us how to establish a mind-body-spirit connection and create better connections with the people around us by exploring how these aspects are interconnected and influenced by the way we eat, think, and feel.

Audio Summary

Listen to the audio of this summary with a free reading.fm account*:

Oftentimes we feel unwell for no apparent reason. We start feeling anxious, burnt out , and in a general state of indisposition. The simplest things can make us cry or get angry and frustrated. Moreover, the doctor’s check-up reveals nothing out of the ordinary, and over-the-counter medication does nothing to help us.

So what is it? Many people go through these symptoms throughout their lives. It doesn’t depend on our success, both in our personal or financial lives. However, it does depend on our mind-body-spirit connection. An impaired relationship between these elements can alter our life quality and create this feeling of unwellness.

Nicole LePera  went through this challenging state of affairs, and she reveals that although her life seemed pretty much on track, with a loving partner, no financial troubles, and a cozy home, she felt awful, both mentally and physically. Then, she tried approaching a healing method based on the connection between the body and mind.

How to Do the Work explores a holistic approach to healing by explaining how the body is interconnected with one’s mind and spirit and true relief lies within the inside of each person. By documenting her journey via Instagram, the author managed to attract over three million people to join her and learn valuable lessons.

Among them, here are my three favorite ones:

  • Childhood trauma is blocking our path to healing.
  • Survival systems are unhealthy and we have to let them go.
  • Create boundaries to achieve healthy relationships.

Lesson 1: Identifying and healing childhood trauma play an important role in our healing process .

Childhood is the part of our lives when we form our predominant traits, beliefs, and personality. These early years can define our entire journey. What we hear, see, and learn during this time is crucial. Even though many of the things we remember are just fuzzy memories.

However, many of us go through a lot of anxiety, sadness, and even fear during our childhood. For example, if our parents fought frequently, someone in our family was chronically ill or maybe we were bullied throughout our school years, it can all come back to us long after these events have passed under the form of trauma .

This can negatively affect the quality of our life and make us lose touch with our true selves. For this reason, many of us feel numb or trapped or fail to really recognize and feel all our emotions, because we continue to use the self-defense mechanisms we used as children.

To heal from this trauma, we must go back to our primal wounds and find new ways to cope with them. We have to feel those emotions all over again and use a healthier coping mechanism, which involves honest communication and an open way of expressing those feelings in their raw form. A psychologist or a trained professional can help us heal trauma and overcome it.

Lesson 2: Disarming our survival systems is necessary for a complete healing .

When there’s an imminent threat or danger, our body immediately reacts to it by spiking up its adrenaline levels to help us boost our power levels and overcome the situation. This is also known as the flight, fight or freeze response.

As we become more and more stressed in our daily lives, cortisol builds up and we perceive threat even when it is not there, our thinking process becomes foggy, and we find it harder to establish meaningful connections. In other words, our entire system is impaired.

We react to a perceived threat using our amygdala, the fear center of the brain. However, when exposed to trauma, this function starts working improperly as we perceive threats everywhere. This means that we are in alert mode constantly, putting our body and mind at great effort.

There are certain measures that we can take to disarm these survival mechanisms which make our lives harder. For starters, you can try practicing mindful breathing. Breathing techniques have tremendous effects on us as they can relieve stress levels, improve digestion and balance our body functions.

You can try to incorporate various breathing exercises as a warm-up before your workout, through meditation or yoga, or with a trained practitioner. Moreover, you can try to add more sleep to your schedule and adopt a healthier diet. By accepting these changes, your mind-body-spirit connection will flourish!

Lesson 3: Healthy boundaries can help build better relationships with yourself and those around you .

Oftentimes we perceive boundaries as something negative and rigid, and we avoid saying no out of fear that the interlocutor will form a poor impression of us. However, knowing your limits and respectfully communicating them is a sign of emotional intelligence .

Healthy relationships have healthy boundaries. For example, you can’t let your friends come to your door uninvited all the time if this is something that upsets you. Instead, you should communicate how this makes you feel and establish a common schedule when you can meet up.

Learn how to prioritize yourself without feeling bad about it. Togetherness goes for as long as all parties feel comfortable with it. Therefore, the first boundary you should set is the physical one. Communicate your personal preferences, such as if you’re a hugger or not, for example.

Secondly, impose resource boundaries. Talk openly about your time and money availability, so as to find common ground with your friends and family. The third type of boundary you should set is the emotional one. Acknowledge your feelings, beliefs, and ideas and communicate them clearly, without feeling bad if they don’t coincide with those of the people around you.

BookReview

How do we recognize our patterns, heal from our past, and create ourselves?

In our Western society the work of healing has long been the domain of the medical profession. The Medical Model, based upon the assessment and diagnosis of symptoms and the recommended treatment including medication, is the traditional approach. Yet the rising number of people who experience a range of distressing and chronic issues including anxiety, depression and trauma, begs the question ‘what are we missing?’

Dr Nicole LePera, a clinical psychologist, came to this same question, confronted by her own chronic anxiety and frequent panic attacks. How To Do The Work is the outcome of Dr LePera’s pursuit for healing and wholeness.

Interwoven with her own story, Dr LePera includes the antidotes of clients, and the tools she developed along the journey. Grounded in research and trialled by personal experience, LePera preaches a holistic approach to healing that includes the body, mind and spirit, acknowledging that the answer to wholeness does not rely upon one specific approach but a range of approaches integrated to meet the needs of the individual.

This is an engaging self-help book that provides a balanced approach to the work of healing and wholeness and includes tools that the reader can use in their daily life.

Do you want to improve your live? Would you like to heal from your past? Here’s what you need to do: Contact Colleen on 0434 337 245 or Duncan on 0434 331 243 for a FREE 10 minute consultation on how we can best help you or book  online now .

Relationships have always been essential to human survival. Our bodies and brains are programmed to seek out connection, whether familial, romantic, or platonic. And yet, these vital bonds are often at the root of our deepest suffering. While our hearts are primed for compassionate connection, our nervous systems—which store all our past hurts and disappointments—are wired for threat and negativity.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score , he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

I waited more than 30 years for this book.

Publisher's summary

From Dr. Nicole LePera, creator of "the holistic psychologist"—the online phenomenon with more than two million Instagram followers—comes a revolutionary approach to healing that harnesses the power of the self to produce lasting change.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual wellness that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she'd learned with others—and soon "The Holistic Psychologist" was born.

Now, Dr. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work , she offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.

In How to Do the Work , Dr. LePera offers listeners the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental wellness and self-care.

Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia . Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

I ended up buying the hardcover because the audio book format made it difficult for me to really benefit from the lists and do the work sections. I will listen to the audio book again with the physical book, use a spiral note book and create my own workbook version of the activities.

how to do the work reviews

The Work is one of the latest home fitness programs by Beachbody. It’s created around a 6-week calendar of workouts lead by Amoila Cesar (whose style is a mix of Shaun T and Jillian Michaels). I love this program but it’s not for a beginner. Let me tell you what equipment you’ll need, what that ‘explicit’ rating is all about, how many calories I burned doing the routines, where you can go to get your hands on this program and everything else you need to know before you get started.

I’ve done every workout in this new series and am excited to explain all the nuts and bolts of The Work. There’s a lot you need to know before you try it.

This post may contain Amazon (or other) affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission. You can get more information about that here .

Let’s get started…

What’s The Work program by Beachbody?

“The Work is 6 weeks of relentless functional training…like you’ve never experienced…less body fat, more muscle, and improvements in your mobility and flexibility.” Beachbody

Here’s a peek at the promo trailer:

Even if you’ve been a member of Beachbody on Demand for years, the trainer of The Work will be new to you.

Amoila Cesar is full of energy and in-your-face motivation that I like to say feels like a beautiful cross between Shaun T’s motivational style and Jillian Michaels’ boot-camp military style. (And the routines are a cross between P90X3 and Shift Shop .)

a photo of Amoila Cesar

And here’s one more video (it’s short but good) that’ll help you get to know the trainer of The Work.

Now, before we dive any deeper into the details of this program let me tell you that you can’t buy The Work by itself.

Beachbody has stopped selling any of their new programs as stand-alone videos.  To get access to The Work you’ll have to sign up for a membership to Beachbody on Demand (BOD) .

My goal for this post is to help you decide if it’s worth signing up for the free trial period of BOD just to try out The Work.

PRO TIP : It’s worth it. Beachbody has mastered the art of exercise on demand and your membership gives you access to an entire library of incredible workout programs (in addition to The Work).

CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BEACHBODY ON DEMAND.

Let’s move on…

Facts (and some opinions) about The Work

There are 11 different workout titles in this program:

Push (workouts using push exercises that target your quads, chest and tris)

Legs (these routines focus on strength and agility exercises for the lower body)

Endurance & Agility (these routines focus on exercises that hit strength, cardio, balance and agility)

Pull (workouts using pull exercises that target the back, biceps and hamstrings)

Full Body Tempo (slow and controlled exercises that hit every major muscle group)

Isometrics (these workouts are low-impact with a focus on static holds, time under tension and maximum muscle recruitment)

Total Body Push/Pull (in these routines you’ll do a combination of pushing and pulling exercises)

Strength & Power (these workouts have strength training and plyometrics)

Cardio & Core (in these workouts you’ll do agility, plyometrics and core exercises)

The Crucible (you’ll focus on muscle endurance as you attempt to get in every single rep in these routines)

Range & Repair (these workouts are designed to increase your range and mobility by targeting specific areas of the body to stretch)

Over 6 weeks you’ll repeat each title 3 times .* * But don’t worry, each workout is slightly different. Over time you’ll build up intensity and difficulty with each workout. The only thing that stays the same with each title is the warm-up and cool down.

Here’s a look at the workout calendar that comes with the program.

the workout rotation calendar from The Work by Beachbody

You’re encouraged to start each week on whatever day you want but to keep the workouts in this order .

Every workout (with the exception of Range & Repair) is 40 to 50 minutes long.

So, if you follow the calendar, you’ll do 5 days a week of intense 40-50 minute workouts, one day a week you’ll focus on flexibility and range of motion with a 25 minute routine (Range & Repair) and then you get one rest day a week.

I LOVE the goal of this program–

“…to help you get stronger and leaner while preparing you for real-life activities–whether that’s hauling ass down a basketball court or chasing your kids around the yard…goal is to show you what your body is truly capable of.” Amoila Cesar–The goal of The Work

The Work routines use a LOT of compound exercises . This is when you work more than one muscle group at a time. It’s a very efficient and effective way of exercising and you’ll quickly discover that your heart rate will be pounding even though you’re not doing a ‘cardio’ workout.

The exercises in the program are unique (I’d never done many of them) and not forced together into an awkward sandwich that forces you to contort your body in ways that clearly won’t work.

Make sure you have a nice clear space to do The Work routines . A lot of the workouts require you to move in different directions. If you have the space to do two leaps in any direction of your workout space then you’ll be good to go.

There’s no music in The Work.   That may or may not matter to you but there you have it.

If you have a teenage athlete at home, The Work is a great program for them to use to work on their endurance, coordination, agility and balance . I had my 14-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son do some of the workouts (they both play basketball).

There are 4 exercisers (including Amoila) in each routine of The Work . There’s a rotation of 8 (maybe less) athletes that appear over the course of the 6 weeks. Amoila walks around for most of the routine. That’s kind of a pet peeve of mine. I like to try and keep up with the instructor but that’s just me. It’s not a dealbreaker. Every workout has at least one female in group .

My favorite workouts were Cardio & Core followed by Endurance & Agility and The Crucible.

So, what’s the deal with the ‘explicit’ rating?

Well, in case you were worried about scantily-clad athletes doing the workouts, let me ease your mind.

The rating is because the ‘f-bomb’ is used generously during every workout.

If that bothers you (or if you have kids around when you workout) you can play the ‘clean version’ of every routine.

I honestly, can’t decide if the rating was a publicity thing or if Amoila Cesar was like, “ I’m me. I cuss like a Sailor. If you want me Beachbody then deal with it. ” And they did.

Either way. Don’t let that rating keep you from trying the program.

What equipment will you need to do The Work?

There’s more equipment used in this program than I expected.  You’ll see all of the following used in various routines:

Dumbbells (light, medium and heavy)

Exercise loops

Fitness gliders/sliders

Chin-Up bar

Chin-Up assistance band (aka Chin-Up Max)

A mat (unless you exercise on carpet)

So, do you really need all this equipment?

You could easily do every workout without a Chin-up bar . You’re given an alternative exercise to do in each routine (in case you don’t have one). But I recommend you invest in the other equipment if you want to do this series.

You can use the links out to Amazon to buy each individual piece that you need or you can click here and buy the equipment from the Teach Beachbody shop ( the Beachbody set doesn’t include dumbbells, or a chin-up max (assist) band ).

Is there a nutrition plan that goes with The Work?

There’s not a nutrition plan that was made just for The Work .

The program materials recommend that you follow the Beachbody Guide to Nutrition*, which is a 100+ page pdf guide you can download to help you prepare low-calorie meals. You’ll also find tips and meal prep recommendations. * There are a lot of pages in the guide dedicated to promoting Beachbody supplements and products. You’ll have to wade through all that to get to the useful information. It’s still worth taking a look at if you’re looking for help with a diet plan.

How many calories will you burn doing The Work?

The following are the average calories I burned doing the workouts (I didn’t include Range & Repair in this list since but focused on the workouts that are 40-50 minutes):

Push (45 minutes)-322 calories Legs (45-50 minutes)-345 calorie Endurance & Agility (45 minutes)-384 calories Pull (40 minutes)-290 calories Full Body Tempo (40-45 minutes)-317 calories Total Body Push/Pull (40 minutes)-265 calories Strength & Power (45 minutes)-358 calories Cardio & Core (50 minutes)- 415 calories Isometrics (45-50 minutes)-266 calories The Crucible (40-45 minutes)-287 calories

Is The Work hard? Is it for men AND women?

So, I won’t lie. My first impression of the first week of The Work was that the program was fun but not as challenging as I thought it’d be.

My opinion changed completely by week 2 and by the end of the entire series I can confidently tell you that this program is ADVANCED.

It’s not for the beginner but I recommend it for any intermediate or advanced exerciser. Male or female.

I absolutely loved it. And will use these workouts regularly for my Program Stacking workout rotation calendar .

Let’s revisit the question: Is it worth signing up for a membership to Beachbody on Demand to try out The Work *?

Absolutely !

Use the free trial period of your Beachbody on Demand membership to try out these routines. (And if you don’t like them then you’ll have plenty of other options).

* And if you think The Work might be too advanced you can use your trial membership to try 4 Weeks of The Prep. It’s an intermediate version of The Work program with the same instructor and style of workouts.

How was the crucible your second to lowest calorie burn?! 100 push up burpees alone is over a 100. Those calorie burn seem low in general as well if you’re pushing yourself to complete each day. Im pretty fit and I found it hard to complete the whole 45 min on multiple occasions

Hi Joe! As you probably know, calorie-burn is one of those things that you can’t compare between people. My husband will burn over 350 calories doing yoga for 30 minutes while I’ll burn maybe 75 calories. Whenever I share my calories burned during a routine it’s an average after tracking my calories burned using a heart rate monitor paired to a chest strap over 2-3 times of doing the same workout. So, yes, those were my numbers but they will definitely be different for you and every other person. I share them because I like to keep track of data when I exercise and it helps other people see what they might be able to expect as far as cardio intensity during a routine. But what raises one persons heartrate (and burns more calories) might not be the same thing that raises someone else’s (like the yoga example above) so my hope is that people take that into account and use the data to get a snapshot of the cardiovascular experience that they might have in the routines and nothing more. Thanks for reading and taking the time to give your feedback!

I wish they had a weight tracker to go with Amolia’s programs. I end up making an excel and that is just not as easy. I like to have something that shows the progress of reps and dumbbell weight through the program

What a great suggestion! I love how resourceful you are to make your own, though!

hi! I love the Work. I’ve done is several times but I’m looking for a new full body, INTENSE program that involves weight training but also cardio for fat loss. Can you advise of similar programs? Thanks!

Hi Ann, that’s a great question! Since you already belong to Beachbody on Demand my favorite blend of workouts to get exactly what you’re asking for is good ‘ol Insanity Max:30 paired with P90X3. They aren’t new but they’ll always be challenging and INTENSE! If you’re willing to go outside of Beachbody on Demand then I’d check out what Cathe Friedrich sells. You can buy her individual videos on Amazon (or her website) and she has a LOT of options that combine weight training with cardio. She’s a beast! If you like her workouts then I’d recommend you sign up for her streaming workout service so you can access all of them (there are 100’s). I hope that helps! Have a great day! Mickie

I love the work! It is tough and sometimes I have to modify but it is a great workout! I am a big fan of Lift 4 and needed a change for a bit and the work definitely is an awesome workout!

Hi Tracy! I’m so glad to hear from another fan of The Work! I really think it’s a hidden gem inside the Beachbody on Demand library. Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback! Have a great day! Mickie

This is a terrific and insightful description of everything about this program. My wife and I just started week 5 and have never liked a program better. You are so right that it has those elements of Shaun T which got me into Beachbody in the first place almost a decade ago. Not only does he bring his physical stature to the work which is inspiring in itself, but he has a deep understanding of what is going on in your body as you do these workouts. They must have put together a team of sports scientists to really plan this series out and then take the effort to explain those details – how the muscles are working to protect, say, your knee, etc. And to his credit, his motivation and spirit gets you through these undeniably challenging workouts. Thank you for taking the time to break it down even further even with your calorie burn counter. Somewhat sad this program ends in 2 weeks I may just go back to Week 1 after we finish!

Hi Robert, this is awesome! Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback. Hearing what other people think of the programs we review is priceless for us as well as other people who’re looking at programs like The Work to decide if they want to try them out! Thanks again for reading and leaving your insight. Have a great day! Mickie

After 23 years in corporate America, I took a career-change course to figure out what's next. Here are 9 tips that actually helped.

  • After 23 years in corporate America, I decided I needed a career change and signed up for a course.

Career change, shift, pivot. Whatever you call it, after 23 years in corporate America , I wanted out.

I didn't know what I wanted to do next, but I was sure it wasn't what I was doing now.

Luckily, the US job market is more stable now than it's been since before 2020. But changing careers is more than finding a new boss or moving to a different company.

During one marathon search session, I stumbled upon Careershifters and paid $1,175 for its eight-week Career Change Launch Pad course.

Now that I've successfully pivoted, here are the best tips I took away from the course.

Step back and assess where you're at

We started the course by taking a quiz that was supposed to help us determine what stage of the pivoting process we were in (questioner, browser, explorer, pathfinder, and shifter).

These kinds of assessments can sometimes feel gimmicky, but it was helpful to zoom out a bit and reflect on where I was at.

The categories stretched from questioner (wondering whether you need to make a change) to shifter (successfully finding more fulfilling work), and the assessment told me I was an explorer (ready to change but not sure what to do).

Look for people, not jobs

Building my network was exponentially more helpful than skimming through endless job descriptions.

I recommend talking to everyone about your shift — family, friends, former colleagues, yoga teachers, LinkedIn connections . You never know what or who they know.

I met a McDonald's Happy Meal toy designer through a former boss, and my chiropractor connected me with a lifestyle magazine.

Don't try to do everything alone

Surrounding myself with a community of other people going through a career change made all the difference in my process.

My program included coaches who had changed careers and about 65 fellow participants from around the world — including a programmer in the UK, a writer in Greece, and an accountant in Brooklyn.

They all understood what it was like to feel stuck and overwhelmed, and we shared ideas, work experiences, and networks.

Even if you don't want to do a course, there are career-change coaches , podcasts, books, and so many other resources out there to help.

Career shifts don't happen overnight

We're asked what we want to be when we grow up all the time as kids, but I hadn't had the opportunity to explore that question as an adult.

Deciding to pivot allowed me to take the time to discover more about myself, explore my options, and experiment with different possibilities.

Changing careers is a process — don't rush it. I was eight months into my career shift before I felt confident about what I wanted.

Don't start with updating your résumé

A résumé is all about where you've been. But a career shift is about what you want in the future.

Instead of rushing to update résumés or spruce up my portfolio, I tried to trust the process and focus on figuring out what I wanted.

My career experience up to that point had been something like, "You're perfect. You're hired. Now change."

But after a career-shift coach told me she gets paid to be herself, that became my new mission.

Physically try new things that get you out of your head

It's going to be really hard to find fulfilling work if you're just sitting behind your desk all day looking for opportunities online.

Instead of endlessly searching job boards , I did an informational interview with an author, ran promotions for a high-school musical, and went behind the scenes at a local bakery.

Even if I wasn't necessarily interested in those fields, physically getting myself out there and trying new things helped me along in my process.

Expand your reality bubble

Everyone has what I like to call a "reality bubble," and they're full of different ideas, perspectives, people, and experiences.

Simply expanding that bubble a little bit opened my mind to new possibilities for my career shift.

When I pushed myself to have new and different conversations, I met a gift concierge who helped me identify small businesses that needed marketing help and a Disney travel planner who ended up being my first client when I started working as a career-change consultant.

Take your ideas for a low-risk test drive

Attending workshops and testing things out with friends are great, low-risk ways to experiment with different career possibilities.

I did pro-bono marketing for a doggie day care , took an hourlong course on book publishing, and designed a line of 1980s-themed scented markers — along with 25 other short-lived experiments.

Through all these different experiences, I figured out what gives me energy, what I could get good at, and what I might actually be able to get paid for.

Holding one salaried job isn't the only way to work

When I started this process, I knew I didn't want to do one thing in one place with one company anymore.

Just because having a single source of income is the norm doesn't mean that's where you have to wind up. Eventually, I was able to create a hodgepodged career that met my goal of feeling like I was getting paid to be myself.

Now I work with a variety of people and companies as a freelance writer, career-change consultant, and small-business marketing strategist.

'Tortured Poets' Has Arrived at the Eras Tour: Everything to Know About Taylor Swift's Latest Album

Swift has added a Tortured Poets Department era to her hit tour, featuring songs Fortnight, Down Bad and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.

how to do the work reviews

Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets era is here, and it's safe to say that fans are being well fed. Swift's newest album The Tortured Poets Department dropped on April 19 -- and then 2 hours later, she dropped another one, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. The double album shocker gave fans 31 new songs, including the four bonus tracks that were previously exclusive to the CD variant editions. To wrap up release day, Swift also dropped the music video for the album's lead single, Fortnight featuring Post Malone.

Swift described  Tortured Poets on her Instagram as a reflection of "a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time -- one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure." Within its first day of release, Tortured Poets was already breaking records: It was the most streamed album in a single day in 2024,  Billboard reports .

Read more : Apple Music vs. Spotify: How to Decide

Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department in February, after winning her 14th Grammy award. Since then, she's unveiled four variants of The Tortured Poets Department, during the most recent leg of The Eras Tour . To put the cherry on top, she's added a Tortured Poets Era to her Eras Tour for the remaining 70 shows.

Here's everything you need to know about listening to The Tortured Poets Department. We'll keep updating this story with any of the last-minute announcements and surprises Swift undoubtedly has in store. For more, here's how to stream The Eras Tour concert film and here's our list of the  best music streaming services of 2024 .

Did Taylor add a Tortured Poets era to the Eras Tour?

Speculation of an added TTPD era began after Swift posted a YouTube Short that featured clips of the singer rehearsing for her European leg of her Eras Tour. There were some clips of fan favorite moments, but eagle-eyed fans spotted new choreography, microphones, set pieces, guitars and more.

While Swift has been mum on the subject, fan speculation was confirmed when Swift hit the stage Thursday in Paris. Swift's TTPD Era featured songs But Daddy I Love Him, So High School, Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me, Down Bad, Fortnight, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart. Swift also updated the set list and said goodbye to fan favorite songs like Long Live, The Archer and more.

How to stream Taylor Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department

You can stream The Tortured Poets Department on your streaming service of choice. Both Spotify and Apple Music subscribers are currently able to stream The Tortured Poets Department, as well as users of YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Pandora and Tidal.

That includes The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, which contains all 31 new songs. You can see all the options at Swift's link tree here .

Tracks and collaborators on The Tortured Poets Department

The Tortured Poets Department has 16 brand-new songs and four variant-specific bonus tracks. Post Malone and Florence & The Machine both appear on the album, and Swift teamed up with long-time friend Jack Antonoff and recent collaborator Aaron Dessner on her latest record.

This record has several solo writing credits for Swift. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys and Who's Afraid of Little Old Me were both penned solely by the superstar. With the release of TTPD: The Anthology, Swift adds The Black Dog, imgonnagetyouback, Peter and The Manuscript to her solo songwriting credits.

The standard tracklist for the album is as follows:

1 . Fortnight (featuring Post Malone) 2 . The Tortured Poets Department 3 . My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys 4 . Down Bad 5 . So Long, London 6 . But Daddy I Love Him 7 . Fresh Out the Slammer 8 . Florida!!! (featuring Florence & The Machine) 9 . Guilty as Sin? 10 . Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? 11 . I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) 12 . loml 13 . I Can Do It with a Broken Heart 14 . The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived 15 . The Alchemy 16 . Clara Bow 17 . The Black Dog 18 . imgonnagetyouback 19 . The Albatross 20 . Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus 21 . How Did It End? 22 . So High School 23 . I Hate It Here 24 . thanK you aIMee 25 . I Look in People's Windows 26 . The Prophecy 27 . Cassandra 28 . Peter 29 . The Bolter 30 . Robin 31 . The Manuscript

The first 16 songs were expected as part of the release of The Tortured Poets, but at 2 a.m. on April 19, Swift surprised fans with a double album release. Songs 17 through 31 make up the second half of The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.

How to find The Tortured Poets Department on CD and vinyl

There are four confirmed variant editions of TTPD, named after the bonus track each will include: The Bolter , The Albatross , The Black Dog and The Manuscript . While the variants are available for sale on Swift's website, fans can also find them at Target. These do not include the extra 15 songs included in TTPD: The Anthology.

The majority of the variant editions are available as CDs, including The Bolter, The Albatross and The Black Dog. The fourth variant edition, named after the bonus song The Manuscript , is available as a CD and on vinyl in phantom clear or ghost white colors only at Target. Swift also held preorders for vinyl bundles of the other variant editions (The Bolter, The Albatross and The Black Dog) that included a deluxe CD and cassette, but those were only available until April 12.

In every social media post that Taylor Swift has made, she includes the same preorder link , which includes other retailers besides her website and Target, like Barnes & Noble. At Target, you can buy each CD individually for $14, and The Manuscript vinyl is $46. There is not currently a place where you can find all four of the bonus songs on the same CD, which is why completists and collectors ought to be prepared to drop some cash .

How do I stream bonus songs and The Tortured Poets Anthology?

Good news: As part of the 2 a.m. double album release, the four confirmed bonus songs are included in TTPD: The Anthology. So now you don't need to buy each of the four variant editions on CD and vinyl to listen to The Bolter, The Albatross, The Black Dog and The Manuscript. TTPD: The Anthology is available wherever you stream music.

The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology has yet to see a physical release, though there is a digital download available for $15 on Swift's website. So fans and collectors will still need to buy the variant physical copies of the album if you want to hear the four bonus tracks. We'll update this story if Swift releases a physical version of TTPD: The Anthology. You may hear clips of the album on TikTok as Swift recently agreed to allow some of her songs back on the app.

This isn't how Swift has previously handled bonus song releases. With her last original album Midnights in 2022, she dropped songs in stages: the original album, a 3 a.m. release with seven more songs, then haphazardly released singles on CD and vinyl. There are three versions of the album on streaming, but there still isn't one central album -- on streaming, CD or vinyl -- where you can listen to all of the songs from the Midnights era. So it's safe to say that Swift took the shorter route this tiime.

What is nano-texture glass and do I need it?

Martyn Casserly

On some Apple products, including the Apple Studio Display and M4 iPad Pro, a feature called nano-texture glass is available. This is something that was first introduced on the incredibly expensive Pro Display XDR , before coming to other Apple products beginning with the now-discontinued 27-inch iMac. So, what is it, and should you spend hundreds more to have it adorn your screen?

What is Nano-texture glass?

Glare is often a problem in brightly lit offices and homes, which can render the large, glossy displays little more than hugely elaborate mirrors. One way to combat this is through matte displays. Opting for the new nano-texture glass will drastically reduce glare while avoiding the frostiness and washed-out colors that are often the compromise made when opting for a matte finish.

It’s all thanks to some clever design and a meticulous process that results in displays that can happily cope with bright light sources, albeit at a rather costly addition to the price tag.

How does nano-texture glass work?

One of the main causes of glare is light from lamps, windows, and other sources reflecting back at you due to the smooth surfaces of modern displays. Matte finishes combat this by having some kind of coating on the display which diffuses or breaks down the light due to its more angular surface. Sadly, this works both ways, so the light emanating from the display itself is also altered, resulting in the murkier results that usually accompany the technique.

Apple has taken things to the next level by foregoing a coating and instead physically altering the surface itself through tiny (nano) etchings. The pattern of the etchings means that light rays hitting the display are reflected off at a range of angles, eradicating most of the glare in the process.

What is nano texture and do i need it: Nano-texture Glass

The very clever part is that this somehow doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on the onscreen display. Of course, making all those microscopic etches in the glass is a precision job, which is why it costs more. Over the years the price has come down, however, and the additional cost of the M4 iPad Pro is just $100 more than the standard glass (though you’ll need to get at least 1TB of storage).

How can I clean nano-texture glass?

One of the quirks of Apple’s new Nano-texture glass display is that the company insists it can only be cleaned using a specific Apple cloth. One is included with every display, but we’re not entirely sure what magic ingredients make it such a special piece of fabric.

Needless to say, if you’ve just forked out half a grand for a special display technology, it’s probably a good idea to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and not buy a £5/$5 knockoff cloth from eBay.

How durable is the nano-texture glass?

Nano-texture is as durable as standard glass. Since it doesn’t have a coating, there shouldn’t be any noticeable wear.

Should I get nano-texture glass on my Apple device?

The main reason for adding on the costly Nano-texture glass feature is if you are struggling with glare, for example, if you use your Studio Display in a room with bright overhead lights or work outside on your iPad Pro.

How Fyrakk Assaults work in World of Warcraft

Where to get Everburning Keys to access the chest.

WoW Fyrakk Assault - a demon hunter is sitting on a dragonriding mount, looking towards a Fyrakk Assault

The WoW Fyrakk Assault is a new weekly activity that was introduced to the Dragon Isles with the 10.1 update and the start of Season 2. When you're ready to jump into the action, an icon on your map will indicate where you need to go. You'll also get a quest with the first assault you take part in, offering you additional rewards.

Like similar assaults from past expansions, in the Fyrakk Assault you'll need to defeat  regular enemies in a set area as well as elites that spawn in. In return you're rewarded with upgradeable gear, which can be useful if you need to catch up with alts or if you're just jumping into Dragonflight now.

At the time of writing, I've been able to complete the assault, but it was bugged for some time before I managed a win, showing the progress bar constantly at 100% but with no Disciple spawning. I'm unsure whether the event is completely fixed or if I was just lucky—just a word of warning if you also run into trouble. With that in mind, here's how WoW Fyrakk Assaults work.

How to join a Fyrakk Assault

A Fyrakk Assault will appear on your map at either Ohn'ahran Plains or Azure Span. A marker will show up on the map to tell you where it is each week. You can see the assault before you reach level 70, but you won't get some of the items needed to join in until you complete The Ancient Bargain , the third chapter of the 10.1 story campaign.

WoW Everburning Key: Where to get them

You can pick up a number of additional quests from NPCs in the area, though your primary concern before completing the event will be to get Everburning Keys to open the supply chest. This means you have to kill enemies in the area to get the items they drop to then summon more enemies for even more items:

  • Kill normal enemies in the area and loot Ward of Ingira
  • Use five Ward of Igira at a Suffusion Crucible to summon elite enemies
  • Loot Ward of Fyrakk and use five of these at the Suffusion Mold to summon the Forgemaster

You might have also noticed the large supply crate in the area, which requires three Everburning Keys to open. The Forgemaster drops these keys—see above for details on how to summon it. Once you have three keys, use them on the Supply Chest to receive a piece of 402 item-level gear, Whelpling's Shadowflame Crest Fragments, and a decent chunk of gold.

WoW Draconic Treasures rewards

The Fyrakk Assault has a progress bar , and as more enemies are killed in the area, the more the bar progresses. Once full, Fyrakk will fly across the zone and burn everything in its path, similar to how Deathwing used to fly across certain Cataclysm areas. When this happens, it'll drop a Disciple , and you must kill this new elite to complete the assault and receive the Draconic Treasure reward.

Comic deals, prizes and latest news

Sign up to get the best content of the week, and great gaming deals, as picked by the editors.

Make sure you loot the body of the Disciple as the rewards aren't automatically added to your bag like they are with world quests. You'll receive a piece of 405 item-level gear, Drake's Shadowflame Crest Fragments, and a dragonriding mount customisation option. You'll also receive a quest which rewards you with a Drake's Shadowflame Crest , which lets you upgrade higher-level gear items.

Canada to introduce new rules around off-campus work hours for international students

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Students Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

April 29, 2024—Ottawa— International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Student Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today that the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus will come to an end on April 30, 2024, and it will not be extended. This fall, we intend to change the number of hours students may work off campus per week to 24 hours.

Students who come to Canada must be here to study. As such, allowing students to work up to 24 hours per week will ensure they focus primarily on their studies, while having the option to work, if necessary.

As we head into the summer session, students who have a scheduled academic break can continue working unlimited hours.

In developing this change, we looked at the needs of students, policies in other countries, as well as research that has shown that academic outcomes suffer the more a student works while studying. It also strikes the appropriate balance so students have the option to work without compromising academic outcomes. More details will be shared in due course.

We also continue to develop the new Recognized Institutions Framework to reward postsecondary institutions that set high standards for selecting, supporting and retaining international students. We will continue to support and protect international students from financial vulnerability and keep protecting the integrity of the International Student Program.

“Working off campus helps international students gain work experience and offset some of their expenses. As international students arrive in Canada, we want them to be prepared for life here and have the support they need to succeed. However, first and foremost, people coming to Canada as students must be here to study, not work. We will continue working to protect the integrity of our student program.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Recent studies conducted in the US and Canada have shown that there is a considerable decline in academic performance for students working more than 28 hours per week, and that working more than 24 hours per week increases the chances that a student will drop out of their program.

Most countries that welcome international students set limits on the number of hours they may work while they study. Australia recently changed its policy to allow a student to work 48 hours every 2 weeks. In the US, students must meet additional criteria before being permitted to work off campus at all.

In December 2023, the Government of Canada raised the cost-of-living threshold that students must meet to be approved for a study permit so they are financially prepared for life in Canada and are not as dependent on working.

International students who begin a college program delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement on or after May 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit when they graduate. Those who already started this type of program prior to May 15, 2024, will still be able to access a post-graduation work permit, provided they meet all other criteria .

The new letter of acceptance (LOA) verification process has been a success. Since its launch on December 1, 2023, through April 1, 2024, IRCC has

  •  received almost 162,000 LOAs for verification
  • confirmed nearly 142,000 LOAs as valid directly with designated learning institutions (DLIs)
  • identified almost 9,000 LOAs that didn’t match any LOA issued by a DLI or that the DLI had already cancelled before the foreign national applied for a study permit

Using Data to Design Your Hybrid Work Policies

how to do the work reviews

Surprising insights from EY’s survey of its U.S. hybrid, full in-person, and fully remote employees.

We’ve seen how fully remote work can lead to a loss of connection and development opportunities, particularly those that require observational learning, or learning by watching someone else do it. However, people still want to work from home at least some of the time because of the greater work-life balance and personal productivity that they experience. But what is the right amount of time to be in person? How can corporate policymakers and team leaders get the best of both worlds? The authors discuss how Ernst & Young LLP (EY U.S.) has taken a data-driven approach to questions around hybrid work. Their data comparing the performance and well-being of hybrid employees with their fully in-person and remote counterparts has yielded (often surprising) insights from which other organizations may benefit.

Despite years of effort and copious amounts of thought leadership (some of it of questionable value), leaders across industries are still struggling to figure out how to create policies that balance their desire to see employees back in the office with employees’ undiminished desire for flexibility. Managers are also struggling to make these arrangements and policies work and keep their teams engaged in an era of unprecedented uncertainty and burnout .
