9 dead and 3 in critical condition after mass shooting at Texas outlet mall

Nine people, including the suspect, were killed Saturday at a Dallas-area outlet mall, authorities said, in a shooting that sent shoppers into a panic as they fled for their lives.

Seven people died at Allen Premium Outlets and two more were pronounced dead at a hospital, Allen Fire Department Chief Jonathan Boyd said.

Among those who were injured, three remained in critical condition Saturday night and four had been stabilized, he said.

Follow along for live coverage

Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey said earlier Saturday that the suspected shooter was “neutralized” by a city police officer who was responding to an unrelated call at the mall.

The name of the suspect was not immediately released, nor were the names of the victims. Janet St. James, a spokesperson for Medical City Healthcare, a North Texas health care provider, said it received eight patients from the shooting who ranged in age from 5 to 61.

The shooting happened during a busy afternoon at the outdoor mall, which is about 30 miles north of Dallas .

Officials said law enforcement responded to reports of an “active shooter” at 3:36 p.m. on Saturday.

Video taken by witness Denison De Souza from the parking lot showed people taking cover and others running into traffic as the sound of nearly a dozen distinct shots could be heard. Other videos posted to social media showed similar scenes.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting, the White House said in a statement late Saturday night. The White House was “closely monitoring the situation and is in touch with law enforcement, and local officials to offer support,” the statement added.

There was very little information made publicly available on the suspect.

Speaking at an early evening news conference, Harvey said, "We believe he acted alone and we don't believe that there's another threat at this time."

A law enforcement officer walks as people are evacuated from a shopping center where a shooting occurred Saturday, May 6, 2023, in Allen, Texas.

Responding law enforcement officers helped shoppers evacuate and cleared each retailer to ensure no dangers remained, according to witness accounts.

Multiple mall shoppers and employees said they heard gunfire and took cover where they could before running out or barricading themselves in back rooms.

Stan and Mary Ann Greene were browsing in the Columbia sportswear store when the shooting started.

“We had just gotten in, just a couple minutes earlier, and we just heard a lot of loud popping,” Mary Ann Greene told The Associated Press.

Employees immediately rolled down the security gate and brought everyone to the rear of the store until police arrived and escorted them out, the Greenes said.

Several witnesses reported seeing bodies, some of which they said were covered.

Tarakram Nunna and Ramakrishna Mullapudi told The Associated Press they saw what appeared to be three people lying motionless on the ground.

People raise their hands as they leave a shopping center following reports of a shooting, Saturday, May 6, 2023, in Allen, Texas.

A silver sedan on the property appeared to have been shot at and was in an area cordoned off by investigators, according to coverage from NBC Dallas-Fort Worth .

Gov. Greg Abbott called the situation an “unspeakable tragedy."

"Our hearts are with the people of Allen, Texas tonight." he said.

The full support of the state was made available to Allen officials and first responders, Abbott said. Resources include officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and investigative assistance.

In a separate statement overnight, Allen Mayor Ken Fulk said he believes a rapid response by police and firefighters increased the number of survivors. "Their thorough training not to hesitate to move toward the threat likely saved more lives today," he said.

Emergency personnel work the scene of a shooting at Allen Premium Outlets on May 6, 2023 in Allen, Texas.

The nonprofit organization League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, said it was calling on Abbott and other state officials to convene an emergency meeting Monday in Austin to address gun violence and regulations.

"We must stop this epidemic of killings by declaring that Texas is taking immediate steps to prevent more mass shootings that are becoming all too frequent," LULAC national president Domingo Garcia said in the group's statement.

The shooting came barely a week after a man fatally shot five people in Cleveland, Texas , after a neighbor asked him to stop firing his weapon while a baby slept. It also follows other rampages in recent days, including the fatal shootings of six victims in a home in Oklahoma City on Monday, and gunfire that killed one and injured four in a medical facility in Atlanta on Wednesday.

When asked by CNN to respond to critics who argue that "thoughts and prayers" are not enough to prevent mass shootings, Republican Rep. Keith Self, who represents Allen, said, “Well, those are people that don’t believe in an almighty God who is absolutely in control of our lives. I’m a Christian. I believe that he is.”

Self added that he wanted to know what the motive of the gunman was and whether he had mental health issues, but that for now, he was focused on the victims and their families.

Allen police said the attack was still under investigation and that people should continue to stay away from the shopping center.

The FBI has asked anyone with information or tips about the shooting to report them to the agency.

The shopping center, operated by Simon Property Group, occupies 69 acres and houses more than 120 retailers. The company thanked police who stopped the suspected shooter and first responders.

"We are horrified by today's senseless tragedy and outraged by the violence that continues to plague our country," it said in a statement Saturday night.

DALLAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice is suspected of assault in Dallas a little over a month after he was one of the speeding drivers in a chain-reaction crash that led to multiple charges, according to a newspaper report Tuesday.

Law enforcement officials told The Dallas Morning News that Rice was suspected of assaulting a person at a downtown nightclub early Monday, and that the person went to a hospital after the encounter.

Dallas police did not name Rice as the suspect in detailing a report of the incident to The Associated Press. Officers were dispatched to the nightclub about 2:30 a.m. Monday over a report of an assault, and the victim self-transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Rice’s attorney, Texas state Sen. Royce West, didn’t respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment. The Chiefs and the NFL declined to comment.

Rice reported to the Chiefs for voluntary workouts last month, when Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he had spoken to the receiver and the team was letting the legal process play out.

The former SMU and Dallas-area high school player reported to the Chiefs shortly after turning himself into Dallas police over multiple charges, including aggravated assault, involving the high-speed crash.

West has previously acknowledged Rice was speeding in a Lamborghini SUV when the crash involving six vehicles happened March 30. Police said Theodore Knox, who also played for SMU, was driving a Corvette.

Rice, who turned 24 last month, and Knox have been charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury.

Four people were injured in the crash, and police said the occupants of the Lamborghini and Corvette left the scene without providing information or determining whether anyone needed medical attention.

Rice was drafted in the second round by Kansas City last year and played in 20 games, including the Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory over San Francisco in the Super Bowl. He led the team with seven touchdowns receiving in the regular season.

Stephen Jones Comments on Cowboys Failing to Sign Zay Jones - Jovan Alford, Sport DFW

You might have heard this one before. Dallas likes their guys.

For the Cowboys, it was another failed attempt by the team to upgrade a position of need this offseason. Dallas EVP Stephen Jones was asked about the team’s interest in the veteran wide receiver and gave a surprising response about the team’s WR unit. “Anytime you got a chance to add a pro, you look at it and see,” Jones said (h/t ESPN’s Todd Archer). “But we like our group. If we think somebody can improve us, we’ll take a look at it.” Why the interest in WR Zay Jones, who ended up with Arizona? “Anytime you got a chance to add a pro, you look at it and see,” Stephen Jones said. “But we like our group. If we think somebody can improve us, we’ll take a look at it.” — Todd Archer (@toddarcher) May 11, 2024 Jones gave a standard answer that most team executives give when discussing a prospective free agent. However, he gave a somewhat glowing endorsement of the team’s current wideout unit that features Lamb and Cooks. If the Cowboys do not find a solid WR3 option in free agency, the team will look for Jalen Tolbert to step up this summer. The 25-year-old Tolbert was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft .

Who is QB Mike Hohensee and why is he impressing at Cowboys rookie camp? - Reid Hanson, Cowboys Wire

It might be time to get familiar with Mike Hohensee.

Some guys just have it. Tony Romo showed he had it when he led the Cowboys in a comeback win over the Raiders in the preseason of 2004. Dak Prescott showed he had it when he played virtually flawlessly against the Rams in the 2016 preseason. And Mike Hohensee apparently showed it when he took command of the huddle during the Cowboys rookie minicamp. Hohensee, an undrafted quarterback from Northwest Missouri State, may not be a household name but that may soon be changing after impressing in minicamp and earning praise from Mike McCarthy Hohensee, the son of former NFL, CFL, USFL and AFL quarterback of the same name, commanded the huddle in way McCarthy had not seen before. Attending the rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, Hohensee made the case for Dallas to add a fourth QB to mix ahead of training camp. With Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance on the roster, the Cowboys don’t have an obvious need for a third arm. But if McCarthy really senses something special in the rookie signal caller, an offer could be on the way.

Can Trevon Diggs lead the Cowboys secondary in 2024? - Mark Heaney, Inside The Star

Can an All-Pro CB coming off an ACL tear resume his mantle as the team’s best CB?

That was the most in NFL history, and he finished fifth in DPOY voting as a result. Now, the question is which star corner will lead the Cowboys’ secondary in 2024. And can Diggs provide that at all considering his recent injury? For such an athletic defender who relies on explosiveness to get to the football, how is he going to adapt coming off a major knee injury? There is an interesting example in Dallas’ past that might help us answer that question. Comparing Diggs to Sean Lee In 2013, Cowboys Linebacker Sean Lee delivered an electric season. The Penn State alum had four interceptions and 99 tackles in just eleven games played. He cemented himself as the leader of the Dallas defense and a future defensive star in the NFL. Then, he suffered an ACL tear in the lead-up to the 2014 season. His response to that injury was coming back better than before. In the two seasons after, 2015 and 2016, Lee was a two-time Pro Bowler, an All-Pro, and a DPOY candidate. That comeback from Lee is the blueprint for Diggs as he works himself back to being the head of the Dallas secondary. The question is, can Diggs also come back in this fashion?

Surprise NFL signing gives Cowboys ideal trade target to fortify offense - Jerry Trotta, The Landry Hat

Dallas could bring in a former division rival, and potential RB1, at a discount.

Cowboys should trade for Panthers RB Miles Sanders Out of nowhere this week, the Panthers signed Rashaad Penny . This came after they traded up in round two of the draft for Texas phenom Jonathon Brooks . A longtime Cowboys draft target, Brooks is recovering from a torn ACL, but he’s on track to be ready for training camp. Assuming he doesn’t suffer a setback, Brooks will become the Panthers’ lead back. Source: Running back Rashaad Penny plans to sign with the #Panthers . Former first-round pick reunites with head coach Dave Canales from their Seattle days. Signing likely happening after rookie minicamp. pic.twitter.com/uAsBi8eHpQ — Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) May 6, 2024 That puts Miles Sanders in a weird spot. Penny might be in a battle to make the 53-man roster, but Carolina now has four capable RBs on the roster: Brooks, Sanders, Penny and 2023 leading rusher Chub Hubbard, who vastly outplayed Sanders last season. Sanders had a poor debut season with the Panthers after he signed a four-year, $25.4 million contract last March. In 16 games, he averaged 3.3 yards per carry. That can be attributed to him playing through injury, running behind a poor offensive line and Carolina having no passing game to speak of.

Dallas Cowboys Rookies Celebrate Mother’s Day with Throwback Photos - Josh Sanchez, Sports Illustrated

The unsung heroes.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, the Cowboys shared photos from the rookies’ pasts to show love to the mothers who supported them every step of their journey to the NFL. It was an excellent way for fans to see the men behind the helmet and the loving mothers who helped shape them into the men we know today. The first group featured throwback photos from first-round pick Tyler Guyton, third-round picks Cooper Beebe and Marist Liufau, and fifth-round cornerback Caelan Carson. In the second group of photos, the Cowboys shared candids from seventh-round defensive tackle Justin Rogers, sixth-round wide receiver Ryan Flournoy, and seventh-round offensive lineman Nathan Thomas. Hopefully, the Cowboys’ newest group of players has time to spend with their loved ones to celebrate the holiday before gearing up for OTAs and training camp.

It is possible Cowboys could play on Christmas Day on a broadcast by Netflix- RJ Ochoa, Blogging The Boys

If Netflix wants viewers, call in America’s Team.

Presuming that Netflix does wind up with the Christmas Day games it is safe to assume that they are going to want their money’s worth because it will likely be a large investment. According to Puck, with a tip of the hat to Variety , the reason that the NFL schedule has taken a bit longer to be released this year has been the closing of the deal between the league and the would-be home of the Christmas Day games. Netflix will be the “likely winner” of media rights to the pair of NFL games scheduled for Dec. 25 for the upcoming football season, Puck’s John Ourand reported , citing anonymous sources. The report added the caveat that no deal has been signed yet and Netflix and the NFL “still have to clear some hurdles before any deal is announced.” ... Per the Puck report, the NFL delayed the release of its 2024-25 schedule until May 15, and one of the main reasons is that the league has been “in the middle of a high-stakes negotiation with Netflix over its planned Christmas Day games.” In the spirit of throwing things out for discussion - it would make a lot of sense for someone who is paying a lot of money for a Christmas Day game to want the best possible results which would mean it would make sense to involve the Dallas Cowboys .

Dallas police report appears to show details of Rashee Rice's alleged nightclub assault

A man in a red and black hat

A police report obtained by KERA News details an alleged assault reportedly involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice on Monday, in which a photographer says he was lured to a downtown nightclub before being attacked.

The offense report is redacted, and does not show the name of either the suspect or victim. But other details including age and height match those of Rice, and both the Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV confirmed Rice was a person of interest in the case earlier this week .

According to the report, the photographer was at an after hours party at the Lit Lounge & Feu Nightclub in the 600 block of North Harwood Street before he left and later returned at the request of a man believed to be Rice, who allegedly told the photographer to look at Instagram messages on his phone. While looking down at his phone, the man allegedly punched the photographer on the left side of his face, according to the report.

Rice is represented by Texas Sen. Royce West, who is a managing partner at West & Associates L.L.P . KERA News reached out to West and will update this story with any comments.

Monday's alleged assault is the latest in recent headlines involving Rice in Dallas.

Earlier this year, Rice was one of two people suspected in a high-speed hit-and-run crash in the 6600 block of North Central Expressway in Dallas.

Last month a pair of Dallas residents who say they were injured in the crash filed a lawsuit against Rice and Southern Methodist University student Teddy Knox for at least $10 million.

Two days after the crash, West issued a statement on behalf of Rice that said the NFL star was cooperating with local authorities. In a later statement, he confirmed Rice turned himself in to authorities .

"I want to re-emphasis Mr. Rice's continued cooperation with law enforcement," West wrote in the statement. "Mr. Rice acknowledges his actions and feels deeply for those injured as a result of this accident. Our legal team is now tasked with reviewing all legal documents."

Knox, a 21-year-old cornerback at SMU, was suspended from the university after Dallas police issued a warrant for his arrest.

Both Rice and Knox face eight felonies : six counts of collision involving bodily injury, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and one count of aggravated assault.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is suspected in an assault that injured a man in downtown Dallas, law enforcement officials told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched about 2:30 a.m. Monday to the Lit Lounge & Feu Nightclub in the 600 block of North Harwood Street, near Federal Street, for reports of an assault, a police spokesperson confirmed.

A man was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the spokesperson said. Law enforcement officials told The News the man had visible swelling on one side of his face.

The officials said Rice, a former Richland High School and SMU star , is accused in the case. A department spokesperson would not confirm the names of any suspects, saying “it is not our practice to release or confirm a suspect identity during an investigation.”

On social media, doubt has been cast on the narrative in the hours since the allegation first surfaced Tuesday. Two civilians with knowledge of the incident told The News a verbal altercation occurred at the club, but there was no physical contact.

Rice’s attorney, state Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, declined to comment.

It’s unclear if Rice, 24, was in contact with authorities, and police said no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon. A Dallas County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said there was no record of a recent arrest for Rice.

The allegation comes a little over a month after police brought eight charges against Rice in connection with a multivehicle crash that injured at least seven people on March 30 in Dallas. Rice and SMU football player Theodore “Teddy” Knox were driving two high-end sports cars that triggered the chain-reaction crash, police have said.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Rice was driving 119 mph and Knox was driving 116 mph seconds before the incident in the 6600 block of North Central Expressway , between Lovers Lane and University Boulevard.

Rice and four other men were seen on video leaving the scene after the crash. Police have said the men didn’t stop to see if anyone needed medical attention or provide any of their information.

Rice and Knox each face one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. Both men turned themselves in to authorities less than two weeks after the crash and posted bond shortly after.

Dallas Cowboys Rookie Contract Details are in; Tyler Guyton Gets $13.2M

Josh sanchez | 45 minutes ago.

report news dallas

  • Dallas Cowboys | News, Scores, Schedules & Standings

The Dallas Cowboys signed seven of the team's eight selections in the 2024 NFL Draft before the rookie minicamp last weekend.

Second-round pick Marshawn Kneeland is the lone draftee who remains unsigned.

While we knew seven of the rookies were officially under contract, we now know the details, including the contract totals and bonuses.

First-round pick Tyler Guyton will earn $13.2 million over the course of his four-year deal, with a signing bonus of $6.4 million.

Cooper Beebe, one of the team's third-round picks, will earn $6 million with a bonus of $1.1 million.

Here is a look at the details, courtesy of ESPN's Todd Archer :

There is no word on when Kneeland, a standout defensive end from Western Michigan, will ink his deal. Despite not having an agreement in place, he participated in the team's rookie minicamp and impressed the coaching staff.

Kneeland was also named one of the "best scheme fits" out of the 2024 NFL draftees.

The Cowboys rookies will enter their next test when they are integrated with the team's veterans during OTAs.
