It’s so important to find great books for kindergarteners. Pre-schoolers and kindergarteners are still very open to exploring new interests, and it’s easier to raise a reader when you start young. The best books for kindergarten (especially class readalouds) are picture books — hands down! But if you have an advanced reader who is already getting into chapter books, the options on this list of first grade books and second grade chapter books will come in handy.

Giraffe Is Too Tall for This Book

Giraffe Is Too Tall for This Book

What happens when a group of animal friends gather for storytime, but one’s too tall to fit? The others try to help, resulting in chaos, laughs, and a surprisingly effective solution. With speech bubbles, this picture book is one step behind graphic novels and perfect for young readers developing a love for the format. I dare you not to be tickled by this interactive new release.

I Want 100 Dogs

A girl requests 100 dogs from her parents, but after more negotiation and discussion about what goes into caring for a pet, they whittle the request down to one dog — or was it all a smart bargain by the girl? This playful picture book makes math fun for the pet-obsessed reader and will put a smile on readers’ faces.

Ra Pu Zel and the Stinky Tofu

Ra Pu Zel and the Stinky Tofu

Published: January 2, 2024

Ra Pu Zel is not your average Chinese princess. She likes cooking, doesn’t eat in dainty bites, and doesn’t care much for the princess her parents wanted her to mingle with. One day, she gets fed up with all the constant scolding and escapes to a tower. The royal family begs and begs, but she won’t come down. Until a surprising, stinky encounter. This is absolutely delightful to read, and the illustrations are just gorgeous! Hand to kids who can’t get enough of princess stories and fairy tales for a great tale of being yourself even when it isn’t what others expect.

One Chicken Nugget

One Chicken Nugget

Published: March 7, 2023

Here’s another math picture book that is wickedly funny and will appeal to kindergarten readers as much as it will to older kids. Frank can’t get enough chicken nuggets, so the nugget stand owner, Celeste, starts a contest to double the nuggets day after day for anyone who can finish all of it. Watch out for an ending worthy of kids who love all things farts and burps.

Mr. S: A First Day of School Book

Published: June 13, 2023

This is a fantastic first-day-of-school book about a kindergarten class who’s convinced that their teacher is a sandwich. But is he? I love the suspense and glee in this story and I think it’s a lovely kindergarten readaloud pick.

Growth Mindset & SEL

Teaching kids how to try and try or practice patience is so important, and these sweet picture books help with this:

Bella's Recipe for Success

Bella’s Recipe for Success

Published: July 13, 2021

B ella’s Recipe for Success  is about a girl who can’t seem to figure out what she’s good at. Her brother plays piano excellently and her sister is a brilliant gymnast, but Bella can’t do either of those things well. She decides, though, that she’s going to bake, but it turns out baking isn’t that easy and her first recipe is a bust. But just before she gives up, her abuela steps in to teach her and Bella learns that learning new things — and becoming good at them — takes time and effort. Bella’s Recipe for Success  is a poignant growth-mindset picture book for kids facing new challenges.

When You Have to Wait

When You Have to Wait

Published: January 9, 2024

Whether it’s standing in long pool lines while you melt in the sun or waiting until you’re grown enough to ride the big girl bike, waiting isn’t fun—especially if all you’re doing is watching the clock. But soon, our girl realizes that she doesn’t have to wait idly and that good things can happen WHILE we wait. I love how gentle and relatable the language in this book is and how it manages to highlight the joys of waiting without being too on the nose. And the illustrations are so sweet!

The Good Egg: An Easter And Springtime Book For Kids (The Food Group)

The Good Egg

Published: February 12, 2019

This is a sweet picture book about an egg who’s always trying to be good and perfect. Eventually, he starts to crack under the pressure.

Together We Ride

Together We Ride

Published: April 26, 2022

I loved this cute picture book about a girl whose father is teaching her to ride a bike. After a slip, she learns that she can get back up and enjoy the ride. This rhythmic picture book has super sparse text and manages to be adorable and moving without saying too much. Great  growth mindset book !

Weird, But Good

If your kindergarteners love a good weird picture book, don’t miss these options:

Pretty Ugly (Toon Books)

Pretty Ugly

Published: February 27, 2024

Anna Van Ogre is always making weird and scary faces and her family keeps warning her that one day one day one of those faces will stick… and one day it happens! This book is sure to generate lots of chatter, and squeals of “eww” as your kids discover what Anna’s scary face is and how she finds her “inner beauty.” If you have many sensitive readers, you might want to skip this one as a class read-aloud as it is a teeny bit horror-esque.

The Teeny-Weeny Unicorn

Teeny Weeny Unicorn

Published: February 6, 2024

I loved this sweet story of a teeny weeny unicorn who realizes that size is relative, and we’re all just the right size. It’s intriguing, beautifully illustrated, and just didactic enough to get the message across.

Pepper and Me

Creativity & Inspirational

Mary Can!

Published: March 28, 2023

Most of the time, people say “no” or “you can’t” because they dream too small. Young Mary has been told that there are many things she can’t do. Like stay up past bedtime, or be an astronaut or become president. But what she really wants is to sing, and she isn’t about to let anyone tell her she can’t do it! This is a fun and inspiring picture book based on the singer’s life. The writing in this is also great — Blige is a strong storyteller!

To Make

This sparse picture book about the creative process is perfect for little makers and the catchy rhyme will make it a memorable read.

Last Stop on Market Street

Last Stop on Market Street

Published: January 8, 2015

Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty—and fun—in their routine and the world around them. This was one of the first picture books I read and fell in love with.

Thank You, Omu! (Caldecott Honor Book)

Thank you Omu

Published: October 2, 2018

Everyone in the neighborhood dreams of a taste of Omu’s delicious stew! One by one, they follow their noses toward the scrumptious scent. And one by one, Omu offers a portion of her meal. Soon the pot is empty. Has she been so generous that she has nothing left for herself? Mora’s signature art brings this community, gratitude-centered story to life.

I would add That’s Not my Name by Anoosha Syed and All are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold. I’m not sure I’d recommend The Bad Seed. It’s come under some criticism for having a racist message by contributing to the black = bad trope.

The 50 Best Read Aloud Chapter Books for Kindergarten

Is it normal to read chapter books in kindergarten? While picture books are just fine for kindergarten, I highly recommend using some chapter books in kindergarten during read aloud time as well.

Why, you might be asking?

Here the thing-

Chapter books are wonderful for young listeners too because they really help kids with their reading comprehension and listening skills.

They are forced to picture the events from the story in their imagination instead of having pictures to clearly guide them. This highly improves a child’s comprehension skills. (Speaking of comprehension-read until the end to grab a FREE story retell comprehension cube!)

Let’s dive in to the 50 best read aloud chapter books for kindergarten.

first chapter books for kindergarten

How Do I Choose a Good Read Aloud Book for Young Children?

Choosing a good book for a read aloud is super important because you want to make sure it engages students and captures their attention. Books that have a drawing every few pages are nice but not absolutely necessary. This can definitely help keep kids engaged during this time. I look for books that have powerful or funny characters, are silly and will make students laugh or teach a lesson or moral.

Find Appropriate Chapter Books for 5 and 6 Year Olds

At age 5 and 6, children still tend to have a fairly short attention span. If you get them to focus on a task for 30-45 minutes, that’s pretty great! My biggest recommendation at this age would be to read chapter books with fairly short chapters. I loved reading 1-2 chapters of a book during a short 10-15 minute block throughout our school day.

Kindergarten can be exhausting! This is a great time for student’s busy brains to decompress as they are taken away on a magical adventure through the power of words.

Retell Literacy Center: 20 Famous Story Retelling Ideas and Printables

' src=

My  literacy centers  are a core part of our kindergarten schedule. They are active literacy centers that keep us on our toes and working so that I can work with small groups.

Today, let me share my kindergarten retell literacy center directions, expectations and a list of the 20 stories that make up this year-long center in our classroom.

short story books for kindergarten

Most of the stories that I place into the retell literacy center are pretty famous (or at least well known within the world of kindergarten teachers) but there may be one or two new stories for you! It’s all about how I’ve added found and hand-made items (many for super cheap or free) to bring these stories alive.

I’m going to be honest with you – this literacy center is the one I enjoy “spying” on the most while I’m reading with my guided reading groups.

I strain from halfway across the room to hear the book language my kinders are using and to listen to the biggest billy goat gruff say, “Well come along! I’ve got two hard horns and four hard hooves. See what you can do!” {wink}

Students retell the story by using their own recall or by attempting to read well-loved books.

The best props

What materials does it take? Anything you can find!

I’ve made lots of my “props,” but many of them came from scanning pictures in a book, finding freebies in the FREE box at garage sales, and the Dollar Tree.

Any left over beanie babies? You may just have a few characters you need for Polar Bear, Polar Bear…

Click any picture to read more about the book, get printables and instructions on how to make it yourself!

How to makeit successful

How do my kinders know these books so well that they can retell them independently? I understand that to avoid frustration with kinders – they must know what to do and be very familiar with it before they can and will do it independently.

It’s not boring to them, they love it when its familiar and they know how to do it on their own. {It’s the same reason they can watch the same movie over and over and over.}

We read the book until they are familiar with it and can almost repeat it word for word. {Ser.ious.ly.}

KindergartenWorks: 20 famous story retelling ideas and printables - kindergarten retell literacy center

The first time is always just for read aloud pleasure, then the work begins dissecting the book.

Each literacy center in my classroom has a poster which dictates what their activity options are. In this particular retell center – it is simple… they only get one option.

I like to offer choice wherever I can in centers – so in this instance, choice comes into play with what book(s) they choose.

Retell Literacy Center Directions and Standards Poster

While this center does meet CC standards, I often see lots of cooperative learning and social skill building going on here too… which is a bonus!

They’d rather retell with more kinders than less to share the parts. It’s pretty great.

How to set up this literacy center

Read aloud and rehearse.

Having laid that out, I want you to know that we will generally read the story aloud at least four times before ever releasing it into this center. We retell it as a class on the last reading (giving them a chance to see the retell prop materials in action).

Keep the set up simple

  • Choose a bucket/bin they can put all of the pieces into – including the book and props. I really like using Dollar Store bins for this center but did use book baskets as well over the years.
  • Use a velcro label on the front is perfect to switch out the materials and a picture of the book so everything gets returned to the right bucket.
  • Grab a couple of blankets to create a floor mat, stage or cozy retelling space.
  • Have a copy of the book that is just for this center (if you can). It will get lots of love and need replacing in a few years, but the price in value is golden.

Keep it fresh all year long

To keep it fresh all year long, I simply change out the books as we learn more and then throw in some favorite older ones. We normally have 4-5 out at the center during the school year. Here is a list of the famous 20 books in our classroom.

Famous kindergarten books to retell

  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Fresh Fall Leaves
  • Big Pumpkin
  • There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
  • The Little Red Hen
  • The Very Quiet Cricket
  • Red Riding Hood
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly
  • Hansel and Gretel
  • The Gingerbread Man
  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?
  • The Three Billy Goats Gruff
  • The Fat Cat
  • Cookie’s Week
  • The Doorbell Rang
  • The Three Little Pigs

It makes me laugh at the end of the year when I put in one or two of the first books we ever did and they’re like, “I don’t really remember the words to this one.”

All it takes is me saying, “Have you tried reading the words to see if you can do it on your own?” They beam because by this point they aren’t just “remembering” the words like they were at the beginning of the year – they are reading !

Retell literacy center standards

This literacy center is all about developing a love of books by playing out the parts, recalling text, and every part of a story. Know those  Common Core standards  that are all about the parts of a story?

  • K.RL.1 – With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
  • K.RL.2 – With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.
  • K.RL.3 – With prompting and support, identify characters, setting and major events in a story.

Well, this center is fondly known to me as the center where  books come alive , I see my students recreating the book’s setting, becoming the characters {oh, and they won’t leave out a single one} and living out the major events and key details.

With a few props and a lot of imagination, this center is always a favorite!

I hope with this collection of resources, you too can have a fantastic year-long literacy center and enjoy “spying” on your kinders as they are learning in their own retell-imagination bubble.

What a wonderful idea. I love this

I LOVE this post. Thanks for the resources.

Could you please explain the directions given to the students regarding their work in the retelling center. Are they working together to produce a group retelling? If so, how do they decide on rolls, jobs etc? (I could see some problems here because everyone will want to work with the”fun” prop! I know you have a solution for that problem!) Or, are they working individually on their own retelling ? Who is the audience? Do the children takes turns in that role?

Hi Eileen, The directions are pretty basic. I don’t dictate how they have to retell and if they have to do it as a group. We model performing for an audience (the rest of the class) when we do it together before releasing it into the center. Normally they are very good about choosing on their own what they’d like to do. It’s part of the cooperative learning process as they talk about what stories they want to retell, which parts they want to play and how they set it all up. If everyone wants a turn with a certain prop, then they could potentially retell it a few times taking turns. I actually didn’t have that problem more than a handful of times over 10 years. I encouraged them to talk out a solution. They can perform for each other, but most often in my small groups of 3 I saw 1 be the narrator/reader and the other 2 take turns using the objects to tell the story. Then they’d get another story and repeat but often switching up the roles. I hope that can help! – Leslie

I noticed in your descriptiuon you mentioned what time of year you read each book. Would you mind listing them in order from beginning of the year to end of the year? Thanks!

I’ll have to consider that as a post idea – thanks!

You are a great and beautiful person, Leslie! Thank you for sharing these to us. May you and your be blessed bountiful. You are giving enormous help to a lot of parents and teachers 😀

If you want to take this a step further, have your children draw a picture or take pics of the retelling each part and make a simple class book. Add a class list with a space for comments next to each name, bind, and let the children take turns taking it home to share and re read to their families. I just did this with Mary Wore Her Red Dress.

Clever Priscilla! I can definitely see tying more literacy into every story! We love to retell most of these through some typed of shared or interactive writing piece which allows me to bring in the conventions of writing too. Thanks for sharing your tips! – Leslie

Hey there! I love your “There was an old lady…” story props. Would you by any chance have the Simms Taback version available to download? Thanks! 🙂

Hi Jessika, Thanks for asking – I have digitized only 3 of the animals so far. I’ll keep working on them! Check back as I’ll make them available when they’re complete. – Leslie

Where did you find the printouts for the very hungry caterpillar (the ones with holes in the fruit) and the old lady with the hole in her stomach? Those are wonderful!

I made the old lady ones from looking at the book – they are just drawn with marker. I can’t find the exact printables that I have pictured, but these are good ones!

Wow! Thank you so much for this awesome post and all of the ideas at the bottom!!

I love this idea for a center!!! I usually just put the flannel board story pieces with the flannel board. Your ideas will be something that they will enjoy!

I have always loved this center in your classroom. I’m going to have to print some of these to do a retell center this year. I am not nearly as good at finding these props. I love this blog post, too!

Thanks for the great literacy ideas!! Your blog is wonderful! 🙂

What excitement you all have to share in your voices! Thanks for sharing your feedback! Jennie, most items that are literacy center materials have been updated to have the common core standards (like on the posters). Thanks for asking!

I tried to touch base with stayandplay mama – hopefully her amazing items will be back up soon!

Fantastic post. You have inspired me to create this center for next year. I, too, and having trouble getting to the Stay and Play mama website. I’ve been there many times in the past, but today it says I need to be invited. Any ideas, anyone?

I LOVE this post…i need to “re-think” and “re-do” this center for my kinders next year. One thing…for some reason i can not open the links on the “Stay and Play Mama” blogspot…am I doing something wrong? As always, your things are awesome! One other quick question…have you changed all of your wonderful things to match “Common Core” standards. I have purchased a lot of your things before the common core was put in place…no big deal either way…just a question! Thanks again for everything you do! Jennie in Southern Indiana

Love Love Love this. Our retell center is so boaring compared to this. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful! Love these ideas! Thanks!

OMG!!! This is AWESOME!!! It’s GREAT to have all of the resources right here in one spot!!! You rock!=) Thanks so much for doing this! Little Warriors

Love the literacy ideas! I think I will borrow some. Great job!

Great post with a multitude of resources. You continue to inspire.

Oh my GOODNESS, thank you for sharing this! We always use the book to retell the story, and limited props, but I ADORE your creativity in making homemade props for all of these treasured books! I will be adding this center! AND I’m featuring your post on my blog! Thanks so so MUCH!

Love your ideas! I have a station for re-tell…but had never thought about doing Chicka Chicka Boom Boom with magnet letters…duh!? Where have I been? lol Thanks for sharing!! Jennifer First Grade Blue SKies

I LOVE that you shared this!! I am in a school where the principal moved from middle school to elementary. He doesn’t get kinders at all and I had to fight to get retelling and dramatic play back in my classroom. I love all your ideas of props… one that I wanted to add was letting the children create their own props. I have an end of the day free choice time where one of the choices is “creation station”. The kids have several choices of things to make and one is “something that is missing from retelling”. In years past I’ve had kids create “froggy” feet or Author’s glasses. It’s fun to see what they feel is missing or needed in the center!

Interesting! These books are amazing and always have a moral. My younger sister loves them. I used to read these storybooks when I was a kid now I am working with online class help and making assignments to fulfill my university expenses.

Brilliant! My daughter loves these stories. Many are short versions of stories she knows very well already but the short versions are great for a quick bedtime story which you can finish in about 10 minutes; think, The three little pigs without every “Huff” and “Puff”.

I LOVED IT SUPERB

i did kind of like this book but some of the pages are blank so i kind of cannot read the whole story but sure i did get an idea of the above stories

Hi, sometimes it just takes some time to load, some pages do show blank until the book is fully loaded, to solve the problem it can be easier to download rather than readonline

I loved this book because the stories are interesting and have a moral !

20 Picture Books to Teach Sequencing & Beginning, Middle, and End

This post may contain affiliate links.

It’s important to teach sequencing to kids. Use picture books as mentor texts to teach sequence, including beginning, middle, and end. I taught sequencing starting as young as kindergarten and continued up through the primary grades. But remember, that you’re introducing story sequence as you read aloud to children and practice following directions. (First, put your shoes on. Second, put your coat on.)

Sequencing is part of the Common Core Reading Standards — and it’s an important life skill and literacy skill.

Understanding a story’s sequence helps kids when they need to retell the events in the story. It also helps kids predict what happens next because they understand the structure of a story or plot. Finally, it helps children follow directions!

I specifically love using wordless picture books to teach sequence, but there are many wonderful picture books that also can model story sequence or beginning, middle, and end. Here are some of my favorites you can use as mentor texts to teach this specific text structure.

**If you’re looking for HOW-TO / PROCEDURAL TEXTS , go to the How-To Mentor Text Book List .

But first, let’s start with a few possible activities to help you teach this concept… These are the books I’ve used in my classroom as well as new releases that I’ve read to my own children.

Ideas for Teaching Sequencing to Kids

Skip the Beginning, Middle, or End

Take any book with a clear beginning, middle, and end, but don’t read one of the three parts. I love using Pancake Breakfast by Tomie dePaola and skip the ending.

Start by reading the story aloud to your students. As you start the story, you’ll want to talk about how it begins. Chart the beginning in a large graphic organizer or on a whiteboard. Then continue reading and stop after the middle. Ask your students what happens in the middle. You might prompt with, “ After the beginning event happens, what happens?”

Next, recall together what happens in the middle. (She’s missing an ingredient. When she leaves to get it, the dog and cat make a mess of the batter.) Then, STOP. Don’t read the ending. Brainstorm with your kids what would make for a good ending. Would she come back and eat cereal? Make pancakes again? Ask them to write or draw (if they are pre-writers) what they think the ending should be.

In the next few days, you can use the same story or new stories and formulate what makes for a good beginning, a good middle, and a good ending. Use this to analyze the stories you read (did you like the ending?) and even more importantly, to help your students become better writers. If they know that the ending gives a sense of closure and the beginning gets readers interested as well as provides the setting and characters, you now have a rubric.

Human Sequential Timeline

Split up the story into clear sections that you’ll have them reconfigure back into order. You can do this with small groups or large groups. Have groups take each section, read it, and write a summary sentence about it. Each group shares with the entire class what their part was. When they finish, ask the groups to decide the sequence of events — and arrange their sentences accordingly. If you want to do this in small groups, have each member get a section and the small group rearranges the story in sequential order.

Use Graphic Organizers / Thinking Maps

There are some fantastic visual organizers that will support your kids in thinking sequentially.  As always, model using these organizers one at a time before you do a guided practice or ask your students to work independently. Pick one organizer to use. Gain mastery with that one before asking kids to move on to another one.

Story Sequence Map (Beginning, Middle, End)

Story Sequence Map (First, Next, Then, Last)

Story Sequence (Time Increments such as Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, …)

Use Your Organizers and Maps to Retell

When you synthesize the main events, it makes it much easier for children to retell what happened in the story. Use the above graphic organizers to support your children in retelling what happened.

Picture Books to Teach Sequencing & Beginning, Middle, and End

Aquarium by Cynthia Alonso A little girl catches a vibrant orange fish. She takes it to her house where she creates a lake system with a hose, a swimming pool, glasses, vases, and pitchers. Then, the little girl returns the orange fish to the lake after a sweet good-bye.

Leave Me Alone by Vera Brosgol This grandmother just wants to be LEFT ALONE so she can finish knitting her grandchildren sweaters for the winter. In peace and quiet. But even in the woods, she’s not left alone. Finally, she finally finds a quiet, dark place to finish her knitting. And then she returns to gift her family with her loving work. A clear beginning, middle, and end.

Picture Books to Teach Sequencing & Beginning, Middle, and End

The Little Red Fort by Brenda Maier, illustrated by Sonia Sanchez Remember the story of The Little Red Hen ? The Little Red Fort is the same set-up but with a girl-powered engineering twist. And it’s SO awesome — both the clever story and the fantastic illustrations!! Ruby asks her brothers to help her build something. They dismiss her idea. She isn’t daunted– she learns and does it herself. She invites them to help with all the steps in the process — making plans, gathering supplies, cutting the boards, hammering the nails — but the others always decline. The illustrations show the boys playing outside, playing in the pool, playing on screen time. Of course, when Ruby is all done, the boys want to play in her fort but she says no. To apologize, the boys contribute to the fort — flowers, paint, and a mailbox — then they all have a fort-warming party.

Picture Books to Teach Sequencing & Beginning, Middle, and End

The Wolf, The Duck, and The Mouse by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen Do you know why the wolf howls at the moon? You’ll find out in this story! After a wolf eats him, a little mouse is quite surprised to meet a friendly duck inside the wolf’s belly. A duck who lives there and offers him soup. Now, the duck explains, there is no need to be afraid of getting eaten by the wolf. Together the two trick the wolf to give them exactly what they want to eat. Then, they save the wolf’s life so they can keep living in the comfort (and safety) of his belly. Your kids are going to love this silly story that somehow makes so much sense!
