25 Teacher Cover Letters Examples To Help You Get Hired

Your guide to a killer cover letter that will get you that interview.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples

Whether you are sending out resumes hoping to land your first teaching job or looking to shift to a new school or district, one fact remains the same: All the best credentials, experience, and passion will go unnoticed without a strong cover letter. The main rule? Sell yourself the way a publicist would. Cover letters aren’t a time for modesty. They’re a time to highlight your accomplishments and make your passion for teaching known. Below you’ll find our tips for creating the best cover letter possible and our top teacher cover letter and CV examples.

3 top tips for crafting a teacher CV or cover letter:

Keep it short and sweet..

You’ve only got about 30 seconds to capture a hiring director’s attention, so start with what we call “the elevator pitch.” Imagine you have the time between the elevators closing on one floor and opening again on another floor to sell yourself. Instead of rehashing everything on your resume, use the space to craft a paragraph or two that will convince them you are a standout candidate and are worth moving on to the next step.

Emphasize why you’re a great match.

Read the job description and find the overlap between the skills you bring to the table and the skills they need. If the job description calls for certain qualities or uses specific language, repeat them in your cover letter! The ultimate goal for your cover letter is to say, “You’ve got a problem? I’m the ideal person to solve it.” Be professional and use concrete examples.

Individualize!

Tailor each and every cover letter to fit the specific school, district, and job for which you’re applying. Research the school and its culture. That way, you can address their expectations and also use specific examples of achievements in your history to show why you’re the right candidate for the position.

How Do I Write a Cover Letter for an Online Teaching Job with No Experience?

Posted February 6, 2022 by Brooke Shriner & filed under AdjunctWorld Resources .

You can write a cover letter for a teaching job with no experience, so long as you can shape the experience you do have into expressing your best qualifications. The important thing is to determine what that experience is and utilize it. You probably have a lot of experience, and it only needs to be shaped into a well-written cover letter.

There are two things you can do to get that experience into your letter. One is to identify the skills you already have that pertain to the teaching job you are applying to. The second is to start making experience now—and there are plenty of ways to do that.

What Counts as “Teaching Experience”?

Let’s look at some experiences that work for teaching experience that may not be apparent—or, they may seem obvious but you might think that they’re “not enough.” Let’s start with actual classroom experience.

First, student teaching. This is the teaching that happens when you are working toward licensure for public school teaching. Whether you want to be an elementary, middle, or high school teacher, licensure programs require you do undertake a practicum in student teaching, and that can last anywhere from a few weeks to an entire semester. If you taught two or three classes in high school English for an entire semester, let’s face it, that’s a lot of experience.

Second, being a teacher assistant. Otherwise known as a TA, this is standard classroom experience for undergraduate or graduate students in college. It’s notable, too, that this is really a kind of fellowship—and that, too, looks good on CVs. Oftentimes, they help an established professor, but they may also teach classes entirely themselves. What does a TA do? They help students. They often evaluate student work. They help plan lessons. And that instructor you TA-ed for would make an excellent reference for you.

chris-blonk-3modkXVHGvY-unsplash

In fact, even teacher’s aides fit this description. Teacher’s aides can work in public schools from kindergarten through senior year. So does a substitute teacher. Again, it’s the classroom experience that matters.

So far we’ve looked at public school and college classroom experience. But this is by no means the only “classroom” you might find yourself in. There are also community education programs, often hosted by colleges (but open to the general public) and municipalities (through publicly-funded community centers). Such classes are also offered through nonprofit organizations. If you’ve taught for any of these, you have experience.

But what if you have absolutely no classroom experience? Let’s look closer.

Volunteer Experience

Because the population you’ll find in college classes today—and especially in online courses—ranges from traditional college students to adults anywhere from young people to retirees, any volunteer experience with anyone in that range demonstrates that you can work with people—and that you’re looking out for their best interest.

Consider a program like the AmeriCorps. Being a wide umbrella for programs across the country, there are innumerable opportunities to work in schools, with students, or just teaching in general. One program in California, the AmeriCorps Borderlands, enlists members to tutor in English language development and academics to children from kindergarten through 12 th grade at nineteen sites in Imperial County.

The AmeriCorps Life Coach Project in Arkansas provides assistance to adults working toward their GED. The Learning Undefeated program in Maryland enlists AmeriCorps members to serve as mentors to underserved youth and to “hone teaching skills” to middle and high school students, particularly in STEM. The list goes on.

Also, if you have volunteered your time teaching within a faith-based congregation – Sunday School for instance – you might consider that as a form of teaching experience you can discuss in your cover letter. And, again, individuals who you’ve taught or those you’ve taught under could make excellent references that speak to your teaching ability.

Volunteer experience, too, shows an incredible amount of conviction—after all, you care about something enough to volunteer your time and resources without asking for pay.

Credentials, Certifications, and Special Training

At the very least, the credential that matters the most is your degree. Having a degree is a requirement for teaching part-time at a college, though which degree may vary. A rule of thumb is that you will need to have a master’s degree. In some cases, that master’s degree must be precisely in the field that the college class addresses, but in some cases (and the college job boards will state this explicitly) it can be a master’s degree in a relevant discipline but with a certain number of graduate credits (18 is a good number) in the area that needs to be taught.

the-climate-reality-project-Hb6uWq0i4MI-unsplash

A college degree is not the only credential. If you have the requisite degree but lack classroom experience, other credentials may suffice. If you are applying for a job teaching online classes, consider the value of specialized and documented training in the most popular learning management systems (LMSs), like Google Classroom, Blackboard, Canvas, or Moodle. Some of these trainings might be free (Moodle’s is – through their  LearnMoodle platform, others may come with a cost). You can also seek specialized certificate training in online education best practices. We at AdjunctWorld offer a certificate course called Fundamentals of Online Teaching (OT101) – a credential that could be highlighted on your CV and in your cover letter.

There are programs across the country that offer discipline-specific certifications that are reputable and valuable. Take the Oregon Writing Project, for example. As part of the network of the National Writing Project, they offer teachers an Invitational Summer Institute which, upon completion, further makes one eligible to achieve the OWP Certificate in the Teaching of Writing. Taking the course, one teaches classes, develops curriculum, and studies research on contemporary writing practices—all of which would be available to teach as an adjunct in composition!

The bottom line here is that any specialized teaching that teaches teaching makes you a better teacher! If you have some of this kind of coursework in hand, then include it in your cover letter. If not, you can track down resources like the National Writing Project or any organization that trains teachers in your field and start learning now. It will pay dividends for a long time.

Tutoring and Mentoring

Tutoring to any degree is excellent experience in working with students and implementing instruction. Many volunteer as tutors—and AmeriCorps has had substantial impact in this area—and perhaps just as many have done so as a job working for any number of tutoring agencies.

Mentoring, too, where there is ample amounts of volunteer opportunities, is equally important. In either case, it is the “soft skills” that are relevant here: organization, compassion, communication, and so on. There are also “hard” skills at play—or harder, at any rate—like facilitation, lesson planning, evaluation, and curriculum development.

As with all other opportunities, consider taking on tutoring and/or mentoring before you start applying for college teaching positions. Think of it as laying the groundwork for a career. Think of it as “relevant experience.”

More Points for the Cover Letter

Once you’ve got a clear sense of your prior experience and how it translates to teaching—and both “soft skills” and “hard skills” are the cards you have to play—now you can write your cover letter. There are a few things to keep in mind.

Avoid generic language; match your skills to what the college specifies in their job positing. Whether you’ve volunteered or tutored, whether you are certified to use an LMS or certified to teach writing, you must detail as exactly as you can how your experience will lend itself to the college classroom. Be specific. Use numbers: How many students have you mentored? How many years did you volunteer?

florian-klauer-mk7D-4UCfmg-unsplash

Whatever unique qualities you have—and it may be as simple as mastery of the Adobe Creative Suite or a knack for making fun activities—get them down on paper, as well. Indicate how you think they will lead to student success and upholding the values of the college.

When you finally get to writing, do so with aplomb! That is, show your enthusiasm for teaching and your conviction for helping people succeed. The very tone of your cover letter will send a message to HR personnel, department heads, and administrators. This is an opportunity you want. Make it clear!

You CAN write a cover letter with little or no teaching experience. Find the relevant job experience, demonstrate what you’ve learned, lay down your credentials, and show your excitement.

Incorporate These Items into Your Cover Letter for a New Teacher

  • Greatest relevant accomplishments
  • Goals for a classroom
  • Teaching methods that you utilize
  • Teaching style
  • Quotes or testimonials

Include the Greatest Relevant Accomplishments

When digging up your best accomplishments to highlight in your letter of intent, make sure they are relevant, impressive, and well-explained. They should demonstrate problem-solving, critical thinking, classroom management, collaboration, etc. These professional achievements should describe what the challenge was, what action was taken, and the result. You can use the CAR acronym to help you write your accomplishments: Challenge, Action, Result.

If you can incorporate facts and figures, the better off you will be. Since facts are easy to break down and comprehend, they mean a great deal to a hiring school district. Furthermore, you can demonstrate your talents and skills by using figures and expanding upon your achievements. This means you can show that your methods directly affected students’ performance on testing. Therefore, you can prove your worth to the school district you are applying to.

When deciding to include a few of your most impressive accomplishments, you can incorporate them in paragraph format in one of your letter’s body paragraphs or by listing 3 to 4 accomplishments in a shorter, bullet-point form.

As a new teacher, you may think developing relevant accomplishments is difficult when you lack teaching experience; however, you can still use experiences to highlight your teaching-related talents. These include:

  • Student teaching internship
  • Camp counseling
  • Academic accomplishments
  • Volunteering
  • Customer service jobs
  • Training experience

Quotes/testimonials are perfect for including in a cover letter for a new teacher with no experience.

Speaking of proving your worth… incorporating quotes and testimonials into your cover letter or resume can be an invaluable tool for marketing yourself. Consider including a testimonial from a past boss, lead teacher, or professor at the bottom of your cover letter, demonstrating your hard work, dedication, and past performance. If you decide between a few quotes, choose the most recent or most relevant to teaching.

Additional notes about attention-grabbing cover letters for a new or experienced teacher.

Regardless of the teaching position you are applying for, you want to ensure your letter of intent looks tidy, professional, and well-thought-out. Keep the document to one page, using appropriate titles and the correct person/school of interest address.

Make sure you use complete sentences and compelling wording. Do not include fluff or filler to lengthen your document – the reader will surely notice that trick and will not be held in your favor. Furthermore, ensure your document is spaced correctly and easy to read – spaces between paragraphs, or white space, is an excellent tool to make the document easier to peruse.

A Final Writing Tip When Creating Your Cover Letter for a New Teacher

Show consistency in your cover letter and resume.

For your new teacher’s resume and cover letter to match, they must have the following:

  • The same header/contact information at the top
  • Same font style and size for the text in the body of both documents
  • The same margins for both documents
  • Similar content and highlights, but worded differently

After completing your cover letter for a new teacher posting, you should ensure that someone with an excellent literacy standard proofreads it. Even if you are confident in your abilities, it’s easy to be blind to your mistakes – always get it checked over before sending.

Hopefully, after reading these cover letter writing tips, you will feel more confident about writing your cover letter for a new teaching position.

Don’t let an absent or poorly written cover letter for a new teacher post hold you back from landing your dream teaching job!

When applying for a job, a cover letter gives you a chance to impress a potential employer and convince them to interview you for the role. But what if you don’t have experience in the job you’re applying to? If you want it, go for it—but you’ll need to write your cover letter a bit differently. This guide explains how to write a cover letter when you lack relevant experience. We’ve even included an example letter and template for you to use on your own job hunt. Keep reading to persuade a recruiter to take a chance on you, all thanks to a great cover letter.

Things You Should Know

  • Carefully read the job posting and research the organization thoroughly. Note any specific skills and qualifications required for the role.
  • Explain why you are interested in the role. Discuss your skills and background, and describe how they are transferable to the job you’re applying to.
  • Emphasize your talents, personality, work ethic, and other attributes that make you qualified for the job. Explain why the company aligns with your career goals.

Writing Your Cover Letter

Step 1 Carefully read the job posting and research the organization.

  • Make a list of your own skills, qualifications, and previous work experience that could be applicable to the job.
  • For instance, if you’re applying for a teller position with a local bank, you can list previous customer service work, experience handling money, and your overall trustworthiness and work ethic.
  • Visit the organization’s website to learn about their work. For a bank teller position, for example, you could learn about the specific financial products and services offered by the bank.

Step 2 Put your name, contact information, and the date at the top.

  • You can also include your phone number and email beneath your mailing address, above the date.
  • For a fancier look, center your contact information at the top of the letter, just as you would on a resume. If you do this, place the date on the left, two lines beneath your contact information.

Step 3 Place the recipient’s name and organization below your contact info.

  • For example, if the recipient was a professor and department chair at a university, you could write “Prof. Emily Smith” followed by “Chair, Department of Physics” on the next line.
  • Align this information to the left, two lines below the date.
  • If you don’t know who will read the letter, exclude the recipient’s name and title. Be sure to put the organization’s name and address.

Step 4 Include a formal greeting.

  • Use a comma after a “Dear” greeting, such as “Dear Mr. Brown.” Use the recipient's name whenever possible since this makes your cover letter more personal.

Step 5 Inform them that you are writing to apply for a specific job.

  • You could say “I’m writing to apply for the position of Instructor at Lotus Yoga Studio. I came across this opportunity on your website.”
  • You could then add “I have practiced yoga for several years and would be excited for the opportunity to teach it to students.”
  • If you learned about the position from a specific person, you can reference that person in your opening paragraph: “I was made aware of this opportunity by my close friend, Abby Smith, who was previously an instructor at your studio.”
  • You don’t need to introduce yourself by name, as in “My name is Sofia Romero.” The recruiter will see your name at the top of the letter.

Step 6 Explain how your skills and experience are relevant to the job.

  • Use keywords from the job posting that refer to specific skills. For example, “customer service,” “teaching experience,” or specific programming languages like “Javascript” could be keywords.
  • If you’re a student, emphasize extracurriculars, leadership positions, and academic achievements. [6] X Research source
  • If you’re applying for a math tutoring position for grades K-3, you could mention your academic performance in math classes. You could also discuss previous experience working with children, like babysitting or camp counselor roles.
  • Discuss your temperament and work ethic too. For instance, you could say “I am patient, kind, and very comfortable working with groups of children in a learning environment.”

Step 7 Emphasize that you’re a great fit for the job.

  • For a sales job, you could say “I am very extroverted and thrive in fast-paced environments. I also enjoy the challenge of exceeding quotas. For these reasons, I believe I’m naturally suited for a career in sales.”
  • You could also reference the company’s mission and values: “I am impressed by the quality of ABC, Inc.’s products and their commitment to their customers.”

Step 8 Ask for an interview.

  • You could write: “I would welcome the chance to interview for this position. I believe my background and skill set make me an excellent fit for this role, and I see a future myself at ABC, Inc. Thank you for your time and consideration.”
  • If you know the recruiter or their managers by name, you could thank them personally: “Please send my warmest regards to Ms. Rhodes and the rest of the team.”

Step 9 End with “Sincerely,” followed by your full name.

  • If you sign the letter, sign it in the space above your printed name.
  • Make sure your letter fits on one page. If it’s too long, consider cutting down some of the paragraphs, but avoid altering the margins or making the font too small.

Step 10 Proofread your letter carefully before sending it.

  • Set the letter aside for a few hours or overnight, then read it again with “fresh” eyes. This makes it easier to catch mistakes.
  • Have a friend or family member read the letter and offer feedback. Ask them if any sections were unclear or confusing.
  • Check the job posting again to make sure you’ve covered everything. If you forgot to include something important, add it to the letter now, then proofread it again.

Step 11 Save the final letter as a PDF and submit it.

  • Check the PDF after saving it to make sure the formatting is right. Check the spacing and font, and make sure the letter fits on one page.
  • If you send the letter by email, include a subject line like “Re: Cover letter for Marketing Position with ABC, Inc.” Write a 2-3 sentence email introducing yourself. State the position you're applying for, mention the attached cover letter, and include your contact information.

Human Resource Manager

Mr. Kevin Milton

September 22, 2019

Dear Mr. Milton,

Your Company’s teacher assistant opening is an excellent match for my qualifications. As a recent graduate of Northeastern Illinois University with a Bachelors’ in Early Childhood Education, I offer solid academic credentials as well as industry experience gained from an internship. I’m in search of entry-level positions with the goal of gaining experience in an applied educative environment.

In middle school, I found an interest in musical theatre. In the eighth grade, I was in an Advanced Performing Arts class where I was the leader of the school musical band. I discovered that through believing and showing endless support one can aid another. Enjoying this atmosphere, I got accepted into the Coronado School of the Arts in the Musical Theatre and Drama department. I worked with new people every day and had the opportunity to build relationships with different persons. Our team became much more united than at the beginning of the year, and our performance quality went up. I feel that the lessons of teamwork that I have learned and my ability to communicate with new people are useful for all areas of my life for both school and a job. In addition, I am a member of the varsity golf team. Practices and matches take a huge amount of time requiring me to optimize my schedule in an effective way. I had success showed the result in maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

I’m seeking out a position that allows me to excel in being an energetic team player and further strive in my career in the field of early childhood education. I ensure that each child receives highly attentive care and guidance to maximize their progress. I’m confident that I’m more than willing to assume ultimate responsibility for the development of children under my care. I’m looking to join a lively and cultured environment in a school that supports their staff to learn and improve every step of the way.

I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you more about this teacher assistant position soon, and I invite you to contact me to schedule a meeting with you. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully, Edwin Donnovan J.

Mr. John Williams

Alberts Elementary School 12345 Sycamore St. Astoria, NY 12345

July 21st, 2020

Dear Mr. Williams,

I have long been inspired by the innovative teaching methods at Alberts Elementary School, and therefore was thrilled to see an opening for a Teacher’s Aide position at your reputed institution. While reading about the opening, I found that the school’s desired qualities resonated with my interests and career goals. Hence, I am confident that my skills and qualifications would make a positive contribution to your school.

While completing an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education at Cliff City Community College, I worked part-time as a camp counselor. Consequently, it gave me the opportunity to practice implementing the teaching methods I was learning in school.

As I have learned, your school values positive encouragement, and personalized instruction for every child. Likewise, I place a lot of importance to their development and learning. Having a positive, personable attitude, gives me a great understanding of children’s needs. In fact, it helps me create a good classroom atmosphere using positive reinforcement techniques.

Additionally, I would be very enthusiastic about helping Alberts Elementary School promote arts education. As I understand this has been one of the school’s priorities for the last decade. Being an artist myself and firmly believe in supporting students in their creative endeavors.

To summarize, if you feel that my background and skillset meet your current needs, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the position in greater detail. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Samantha Stevens, Teacher Aide [email protected] (123) 456-7890

Cover Letter for Teacher Assistant No Experience

Writing a cover letter to enclose with a Teacher Assistant Resume is particularly important when the candidate has no experience in hand, just starting out his or her career and applying for a first job.

The reason is that it is especially important for an entry-level candidate to start on the right foot with an employer – as newly graduated people are seldom given many chances.

So writing a great cover letter is your chance to create that first good impression.

ATS Resume Templates

Download an ATS-friendly resume template for free. These templates can be edited in Microsoft Word and can be accurately scanned by an applicant tracking system.

teacher cover letter no experience

If you’ve made it to this page, then you probably already know more about applicant tracking systems (ATS) than the average job seeker. That gives you an advantage! Why?

Many companies use ATS to manage resumes and applications. In fact, Jobscan research shows that over 97% of Fortune 500 companies use an ATS.

If an ATS can’t read or understand the information on your resume, then your application might not be seen when a recruiter searches for candidates with specific skills or experience – even if you have those skills or the experience!

Your resume needs to be ATS-friendly in order to give you the best chance of getting a job interview. That means that you need an ATS resume template.

We’ve designed 15 ATS resume templates that can be downloaded as Microsoft Word files and easily edited. Download one for free or use our free resume builder to get a customized ATS-friendly resume in minutes.

Executive and Management ATS-Friendly Resume Templates

As a leader, you want your experience and accomplishments to shine. These resume templates give you opportunities to show the measurable results you’ve achieved, as well as your hard and soft skills .

Using correct formatting is critical here. The ATS needs to be able to parse all of that vital information and categorize it correctly. You also need your resume to be searchable by an ATS so that when a recruiter filters candidates by skills, your application stays on the list.

ATS Resume Templates - What You Need to Know

How to make the perfect ats resume.

Remember, an ATS is just a computer filing system. It needs to be able to scan and understand the text on your resume in order to correctly parse the information and sort it properly.

An ATS will never auto-reject a resume, but an ATS optimized resume does make it easier for a recruiter to find you among the sea of applicants.

Even more importantly, an ATS-friendly resume naturally follows expert-recommended resume writing standards as well. That means that when the recruiter personally views your resume, it will include the relevant information they’re looking for and will be formatted in a way that makes it easier to read

Follow these tips for making the perfect ATS resume :

1. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for

Focus on quality over quantity. Each job you apply for is unique, even if they all have the same title. Every company has different needs for that role. The job description will make it clear which hard skills, soft skills, experience, and education the company is looking for. So tailor your resume to show them that you are the perfect candidate.

Tailoring each and every resume can be time consuming, but it’s worth the effort!

You can speed up this process by using a tool like Jobscan’s resume scanner . Powered by AI-technology , this tool analyzes your resume against the job description and provides you with a resume score that tells you how closely your resume matches the job description. It also tells you exactly what you need to do to increase your score.

2. Match your resume keywords to skills found in the job description

Recruiters might use an ATS’ search function to find applicants with specific skills. How do you know what skills they will search for? By examining the job listing. Use a resume scanner to automatically pick out the hard and soft skills the recruiter might search for, and then include those on your resume.

Even if the recruiter doesn’t search applications for those skills, they’ll definitely be looking for mentions of them on each resume they review.

3. Use long-form and acronym versions of keywords

Some ATS will only return resumes with the exact keywords the recruiters would search for. For example, if you included “Search Engine Optimization” in your resume but the recruiter searched for “SEO,” your profile may not appear in the results. Try to include both the acronym and the unabbreviated form of the term.

Use a tool like Jobscan’s resume fixer to make sure your resume doesn’t contain mistakes that will eliminate you from consideration.

4. Use Chronological or Hybrid resume format to write your resume .

Recruiters do not like the functional resume format . Unless you’re making a career change, a functional resume is going to work against you. (And even then, we recommend you steer clear of the format for a career change resume .)

The best format for the ATS is traditional reverse chronological. You can also use chronological and hybrid resume formats as these are familiar to most recruiters.

5. Use an easy-to-read, traditional font

For readability, use a traditional serif or sans serif font. Untraditional or “fancy” fonts can cause parsing errors, which means the full text of your resume won’t be searchable.

6. Use standard resume section headings

Section headers like “Where I’ve Been” in place of “Work Experience” will confuse applicant tracking systems, causing them to organize information incorrectly.

7. Save your file as a .docx if possible

A docx file is most compatible with ATS.

What is the best resume format for ATS?

There are three standard resume formats to choose from in your job search. They shape your first impression and determine the way recruiters and hiring managers view your fit as an applicant.

Your resume formatting can also determine how well your resume is parsed within an applicant tracking system (ATS) and how likely you are to be noticed as a result.

Regardless of the format you use, the most important thing is to use standard section headings like Experience, Skills, and Education. That will make it easier for the ATS to categorize the text.

How to tailor your ATS-friendly resume to a job

Tailoring your resume proves to recruiters that you’re an experienced professional. Most importantly, it shows them that you’re the perfect fit for this role.

Follow these three steps for tailoring your resume to a job description:

1. Examine the specific job description of the position

Go line by line through the job description and ask yourself these questions:

  • “Does my resume experience section clearly state that I can do what’s required of this role?”
  • “Am I using the same language found in the job description or job posting?”

You might find several different or missing skills and keywords in your generic resume.

2. Match skills and keywords from the job description

Mirroring the language, keywords, and buzzwords found within the job description is the easiest way to demonstrate you’re a better match than the competition.

The best way to show you’re the best fit for the position is to take words from the job posting and strategically put them in your job descriptions and other resume sections. A resume scanner will automatically pull out these keywords in seconds and speed up this process.

3. Write your job title clearly

Recruiters might search for people who have done the job they’re hiring, so list your job titles clearly and match the titles to the one in the job posting when possible. If you haven’t held the job before, list it under your name at the top or as part of your summary section.

What is Applicant Tracking Software (ATS)?

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software used to assist with human resources, recruitment, and hiring. While each system offers a different package of features, applicant tracking systems are primarily used to help hiring companies organize and navigate large numbers of applicants.

For example, an ATS stores job candidate information like resumes, cover letters, references, and other recruitment and hiring data that HR teams can easily access and organize. It will also track job candidates and their application status throughout the hiring pipeline.

Ultimately, an ATS automates time-consuming administrative tasks such as manually screening applicants, reading resumes, scheduling interviews, and sending notifications and emails to job candidates and employees.

Can you add graphics to your resume?

When it comes to creating an ATS-friendly resume , the rule is: The simpler, the better. ATS are improving at scanning different formatting features, but not all of them are good at this.

Adding graphics and images could cause ATS parsing errors , which means the text on your resume won’t be fully searchable or accurately categorized by an ATS. We recommend that job seekers err on the side of caution. Avoid graphics, images, and photos.

Are Google Docs or Microsoft resume templates ATS-friendly?

They can be. We talked about some formatting features to avoid on your resume – fancy graphics and non-traditional fonts. Those features can trip up an ATS, even if they’re on a Word document or Google Docs file.

However, as long as you follow the guidelines on this page, or use one of these ATS resume templates, you’ll be fine.

How to get your cover letter past the ATS?

To increase your cover letter’s chances of passing an ATS, focus on using a clean format without complex formatting, incorporate relevant keywords and phrases from the job description, and ensure that your content is easy for the ATS to parse.

Consider using a tool like Jobscan’s cover letter generator to help you create an ATS-friendly cover letter. If you already have a cover letter, run it through our cover letter checker tool to get personalized feedback on how to improve your cover letter and make it more compelling to employers.
