The best entry-level jobs for history majors (with salary data!)

It’s not uncommon for history students to spend the occasional sleepless night wondering what they’ll do for work once they graduate, or if they should have majored in history in the first place. In reality there is a wide range of entry-level jobs for history majors, even if they aren’t obvious at first.

These roles generally don’t require any additional certification, so you can apply for them right away.

Museum educator

Average entry-level salary: $28,000 USD

Museum educator is one of the most appropriate entry-level jobs for history majors because it makes such a direct use of subject matter knowledge. In this role you would spend time engaging with museum visitors directly on an exhibit floor, explaining and contextualizing its pieces.

Once in a while, museum educators are also known to travel locally to bring artifacts and lessons to schools or community groups. You can also find them acting as historical interpreters and tour guides at historical sites.

Note that museum educators are different from curators , who have more experience and tend to manage specific pieces within a museum. Both can interact with visitors but it’s not really the curator’s job to do so.

This is a particularly suitable job if you have a master’s degree in public history.

Average entry-level salary: $35,000 USD

Archivists aren’t in high demand, as they are generally limited to government roles. In fact, there are only about 3,000 archivists employed by the United States National Archives.

Archivists are also supported by two similar roles.

• Archives Specialists , who add specialized historical knowledge records that archivists’ general knowledge wouldn’t cover.
• Archives Technicians , who work with conservators to clean and preserve artifacts, as well as doing the legwork of locating records and artifacts in the large rooms where they are kept.

History is a literary discipline too, after all—you spend time writing, revising, editing, and adhering to complex publishing guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style . This makes it one of the most common history writing jobs to pursue.

Editorial assistants also do a lot of legwork suited to historians, including the following.

• Researching new stories to pitch
• Fact-checking manuscripts for editors
• Transcribe interviews
• Write promotional articles

Entering publishing in the 21st century also means you’ll need to develop some digital publishing skills. You’ll have an easier time getting your foot in the door if you learn of these skills.

Content writing is an excellent entry-level job for history majors because it makes use of their three strongest skills:

Genealogy specialist

Average entry-level salary: $18,000 – $25,000 USD

Genealogy specialists practice history on a daily basis, making it no surprise that this would be a good entry-level job for history majors.

It takes a dedication to research to build a family tree, as well as familiarity with government records and deciphering handwriting. You really need to love research to make this a fulfilling career.

With that caveat out of the way, however, there’s good news: genealogy is a growing industry and it’s worth billions. Ancestry.com alone was valued at $4.7 billion dollars in 2020, and that’s just one of many companies in the space.

Why would anyone need a genealogist when there are so many software platforms and DNA tests available? It’s hard work, and the technology in this industry hasn’t replaced the need for cold, hard research.

Genealogy specialists are simply likely to use those tools because they expedite the research process. In fact, the technology makes it much more affordable to customers because so many records are digitized and made accessible. It beats hiring someone to travel around the world to read documents in church and government archives around the world.

“City clerk” isn’t the most exciting job in the world, but this role forms the backbone of municipal governments across the world. The high amount of record-keeping and documentation makes it a natural entry-level job for history majors, and you can it in any town or city!

City clerks tend to take on a wide range of responsibilities that might not require too much specialization—which is also a good match for the many generalists that come out of history programs.

Those responsibilities can include these.

• Creating, filing, and retrieving records
• Office management
• Support services
• Administrative tasks (e.g. scheduling meetings)
• Basic accounting
• Purchasing supplies or assets
• Assisting with organizing elections

From here you can move into other roles within government, or you could move laterally into the private sector by landing a job as an executive assistant or an office manager.

Non-profit program coordinator

Average entry-level salary: $34,000

Program coordinators are the backbone of the non-profit sector, where fundraising is the name of the game. These professionals execute on plans and strategies from program directors to raise money for certain causes, often tied to the non-profit organization itself.

A program coordinator would find itself doing many of these day-to-day tasks:

• Creating flyers and mailing materials
• Creating promotional materials
• Assisting with event promotion (outside of COVID)
• Community outreach
• Managing donor lists

This role is excellent for recent history grads because it relies so heavily on communication skill. The non-profit sector has its fair share of organizations dedicated to preserving history, architecture, and natural reserves as well.

Average entry-level salary: $38,000 USD

Business development is really just code for “sales,” and that’s generally not considered a strength for history majors.

So why include it on this list? Great question.

Pro tip: Many of the most famous history majors in the world became savvy business leaders. This field isn’t as inaccessible as you think!

There’s no doubt that business development is about interpersonal relationships, which means that extroverts tend to thrive here. More than that, however, is the fact that business development is about these things:

• Understanding pain points of other businesses
• Identifying which professionals have decision-making power (before you approach them)
• Listening with empathy to find a potential fit instead of aggressively selling
• Understanding big-picture market trends
• Communicating clearly, both orally and in writing

You might also be surprised to learn that many salespeople struggle to communicate the value of the products or services they’re trying to sell—and that’s a competitive advantage any trained history graduate can exploit.

Ranking the worst trades in nfl history.

In a span of just a few days in the 2022 offseason, the Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns made aggressive trades to acquire what they hoped would be franchise-altering quarterbacks.

The results so far have been underwhelming.

The Broncos are cutting ties already with Russell Wilson after investing heavy draft capital and $124 million for two years of mostly disappointing play, making the trade with Seattle and subsequent extension one of the worst deals in NFL history.

The Browns still have a shot to get more value out of their trade that sent three first-round picks and three lower picks to Houston for Deshaun Watson. Cleveland then gave Watson a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract only to get better play from his backups the past two seasons.

Here’s a look at some of the worst trades in the NFL over the years:

HERSCHEL WALKER

TO MINNESOTA

The Cowboys launched their dynasty in the 1990s when Jimmy Johnson realized the high value of draft picks and turned Herschel Walker into a huge haul of them.

Johnson dealt his star running back to the Vikings in 1989 for five role players, and picks in the first, second and sixth rounds of the 1990 draft. But Johnson negotiated terms into the deal that gave Dallas two additional first-round picks, two second-round picks and a third-round pick if they got rid of the players the Cowboys acquired.

The trades helped Dallas acquire draft picks that led to Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, Russell Maryland and Kevin Smith, who contributed to three Super Bowl titles.

Walker did little to get the Vikings over the hump, losing in his only playoff game in three seasons in Minnesota.

RUSSELL WILSON

The Broncos believed they finally found the successor to Peyton Manning when they dealt two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-rounder and three players to Seattle for Wilson and a fourth-rounder.

Denver believed so strongly in Wilson that the Broncos gave him a five-year, $245 million extension before he played a game for them even though he had two years left on his deal.

Denver is moving on from Wilson before that extension even started but with a high price attached. The Broncos will officially cut Wilson next week after the start of the new league year but will have to carry $85 million of dead money on the salary cap divided over the next two years as a reminder of the bad deal.

O.J. SIMPSON

TO SAN FRANCISCO

The 49ers of the late 1970s were a mess of a franchise and trading for an aging local star epitomized the problems of the pre-Bill Walsh years.

San Francisco dealt five draft picks to Buffalo in 1978 for hometown star O.J. Simpson, who was about to turn 31 and coming off knee surgery.

Simpson rushed for 1,053 yards in two injury-filled seasons for the Niners, while the Bills got two second-round picks, one third-round pick, one fourth-rounder and a first-round pick in 1979 that turned out to be the No. 1 overall selection when the Niners had the worst record in the league in 1978.

BRETT FAVRE

TO GREEN BAY

Atlanta invested a second-round pick in Brett Favre in the 1991 draft, but he barely got on the field as a rookie as he struggled.

That led the Falcons to cut ties quickly, trading him after the season to Green Bay for a first-round pick. Favre’s arrival sparked a franchise revival under GM Ron Wolf and coach Mike Holmgren as the Packers made the playoffs his second season, won the Super Bowl his fifth season and made 11 playoff berths in his 16 seasons as starter.

Favre won three MVPs and ended up as one of the game’s most prolific passers ever with 71,838 yards and 508 TDs.

The Falcons turned the pick into running back Tony Smith, who rushed for 329 yards in his career.

The 49ers knew they needed an upgrade at QB from Jimmy Garoppolo and aggressively pursued one in the 2021 draft.

They packaged the No. 12 overall pick, two future first-rounders and a third-rounder to move up to No. 3 where they took the inexperienced Trey Lance out of North Dakota State.

Lance couldn’t win the starting job as a rookie, struggled in training camp the next season and then broke his leg in the second game in 2022.

San Francisco dealt him to Dallas last summer for a fourth-round pick after just four starts when he fell behind both 2022 seventh-round pick Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold on the depth chart.

RICKY WILLIAMS

TO NEW ORLEANS

Coach Mike Ditka traded his entire 1999 draft class, plus first and third-rounders the following year to move up seven spots to draft Ricky Williams fifth overall.

Williams lasted just three seasons with the Saints, while Washington got eight picks, including the No. 2 overall selection in 2000 used on LaVar Arrington.

CLINTON PORTIS FOR CHAMP BAILEY

This rare star-for-star trade was made in 2004, long before the value of running backs had been diminished in the NFL.

Washington dealt four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey to Denver for Clinton Portis, who was coming off back-to-back 1,500-yard rushing seasons. Washington even threw in an extra second-round pick to sweeten the pot.

Portis was a solid contributor in Washington with four more seasons with at least 1,000 yards rushing in his final seven years.

Bailey built a Hall of Fame career with the Broncos, earning first-team All-Pro honors his first three seasons in Denver and going down as one of the best cornerbacks of his generation.

Mirer hadn’t shown much in four seasons in Seattle after being drafted second overall in 1993. But the Seahawks were able to turn him into a first-round pick from quarterback-starved Chicago in 1997.

The Bears dealt the No. 11 pick that Seattle used to move up to draft star cornerback Shawn Springs.

Mirer made three starts for the Bears, losing all of them and ending his tenure in Chicago with six interceptions and no touchdowns.

The Homes Built as Strong as Time presentation was sponsored by Mary Henle (right) and Lisa Besemer (left) from new Ulm Real Estate. The two collaborated with Brown County Historical Society (BCHS) to create a program exploring historic homes in he county. Special dinner was held at Turner Hall before Besemer gave the presentation.

BROWN COUNTY — Lisa Besemer of New Ulm Real Estate led local history buffs on a virtual tour of Brown County’s historic homes last Thursday during a presentation at Turner Hall.

The presentation was a collaboration between Brown County Historical Society and New Ulm Real Estate called “Homes Built as Strong as Time.”

Five homes were highlighted in the presentation including Bingham Hall, New Ulm; W.W. Smith Home, Sleepy Eye; Pfaender Home, Milford Township; Lehrer Home, Springfield; Fritsche home, New Ulm.

These homes were selected to help tell the history of prominent families that formed Brown County’s history.

In researching these homes, Besemer said she fell in love with the homes and the people who lived in them

“I’ve always believe that every single person has a story,” Besemer said. “The joys you have gone through, the hardships and sadness you endure make us who we are.”

Bingham Hall, 500 S. German Street, New Ulm

Bingham Hall was constructed in 1893 by the Bingham family. Maro Bingham was born in Canada but immigrated to the United States at age 10. In 1876, he moved to New Ulm and formed a partnership with his brother called Bingham Brothers. They started a lumber business, but sold the business to buy up grain and coal.

In 1893, Marco hired contractors to build his house on German Street. The three story house was built by hand in less than a year. When the home was nearing completion in Aug. 1893, local newspapers were already calling the home one of the best examples of architecture in the community.

Maro would own the house until his death in 1924. In 1926 it was sold to Alfred and Helen Mueller.

Alfred Mueller was prominent attorney in New Ulm and represented Brown County in the state legislature. After his death in 1932, his wife Helen took on boarder to pay for the house. It would be sold to the Flor family in 1943. Between 1961 and 1998 the home was bought and sold as property investments.

The current owners of Bingham Hall, Shannon and Todd McKeeth, purchased the home in 1998 and converted it into a Bed and Breakfast, which officially opened in 2006. The home is still a B&B to this day.

All 43 windows in the home are original and have been refinished. There are four guest rooms on the second floor. The McKeeths have a private quarters on the third floor.

The main floor has a foyer with open staircase, a living room with the original fireplace and formal dinning room.

“The home is nothing short of amazing,” Besemer said.

W.W. Smith Home 101 Linden Street SW, Sleepy Eye

The W.W. Smith Home began construction in Sleepy Eye in 1900. Construction was completed in 1901. The original home owner, William Watkins Smith first came to Sleepy Eye in 1891. He helped open the Merchant Bank in Sleepy Eye.

Smith served as a cashier at the bank and was the principal stock holder. Smith was also associated with several other banks in the region.

The Smith Home is a two and half story home combining Queen Ann Victorian and Classical Revival architecture. The exterior features a wrap around porch. The interior features an expansive foyer with 10 foot ceilings, fireplace and a formal parlor.

The home’s grand staircase has original Tiffany newel post, and three stained glass windows on the first landing.

The Smith house is listed on the National Registry of Historic places. Besemer said the home retains much of its look from the original 1900 design.

W.W. Smith had three sons, Arthur, William Jr. and Herbert. Arthur would eventually inherit the estate after his mother Ava died in 1951. After Arthur’s his wife Myrtle became the owner of the estate. The property would be sold to Edna Schmidt in 1966, but Besemer said Schmidt only lived in the Smith house a short time. For nearly 25 years, the house had no occupants.

In 1994 it was converted into a B&B and remained a temporary rental property for nearly 20 years. In 2016, the house was purchased again and converted back into a single family home.

Besemer said the current owners currently work outside the country, but intended to retire to the home within the next few years.

Pfaender Home, Milford Township

The Pfaender Home was built in 1913 on the Pfaender Farm. The Pfaender Farm is a registered sesquicentennial farm. The land was bought by Col. William Pfaender in 1856 shortly after moving to New Ulm.

Col. Pfaender and his wife Catherine were among the early founders of New Ulm. Pfaender helped organize the New Ulm Turnverine. The first Turner Hall was located on his land.

The first home on the Pfaender Farm was a log cabin built 1856. In 1897, a white farm house was constructed.

The Pfaenders had a total of 15 children. Their son Herman would inherit the farm house with his wife Anna. In 1913 Herman and Anna were coming home from a Junior Pioneer’s event and saw the house burning. Herman decided their new home would never burn.

The new house was built with blocks hauled from Fairfax. These blocks were created by The Fairfax Cement Works. George J. Saffert started the masonry business after buying a hand tamping concrete block machine. The Pfaender home was one of the first constructed using Saffert’s concrete blocks. Saffert’s business would grow over the years with more intricate designs and become known as “artstone.” The business became known as “American Artstone” and continues to do business in New Ulm to this day.

The Pfaender artstone house was built in installments. The family would move into each section as it was completed. The house features two stories and a large attic.

Herman and Anna’s daughter Marguerite would later take over the house with husband Harold Runck. The house and farm is still with the family. Over the last 10 years, the family has worked to refurbish the house.

Lehrer Home, Springfield

The Lehrer home was built in 1888 in Springfield by Michael Lehrer Jr. Lehrer is considered Springfield’s most successful businessman. He moved to Springfield in 1885, buying a share in a hardware and lumber business. He would serve as president of the State Bank of Springfield for 15 years. When Lehrer died in 1921, Springfield businesses closed as a sign of respect.

Besemer said the Lehrer home was designed in the Second Empire architecture with front and back porches. When completed the house had 19 rooms. Originally the house had six bedrooms, now it has five bedrooms with one being converted into a bathroom.

The Lehrer home was among the first homes in Springfield to have running water. The water tank was placed on the top floor of the house, with pumps in the basement. Each bedroom has a washroom.

Michael and Elisabeth had several children. Their six daughters, Eleanore, Gertrude, Agnes, Viola, Carola and Veronica never married and lived together in the house all their lives. The daughters formed the Lehrer Holding Company to managed the estate.

The Lehrer estate eventually sold the house in 1990. It was sold again 2000. Besemer said a fourth family has recently purchased the Lehrer home in February of this year.

Schmidt- Fritsche Home, New Ulm

The Schmidt-Fritsche Home was built in 1880 by George Schmidt, a German immigrant. Schmidt came to New Ulm in 1870 to work with his brother Carl. The brothers purchased the Empire Mill in New Ulm and quickly became successful businessmen.

Schmidt commissioned the construct of the house in 1880. The building was constructed with red brick and featured a parlor, sitting room, library and horse stable.

By 1885, Schmidt saw a turn in his fortunes. He would sell the mill and move from New Ulm in 1899. The home was then bought by Dr. L.A. Frische.

Dr. Fritsche graduated from medical school in 1887. The day after graduation a new medical law went effect requiring medical practicers to pass a state examination. Fritsche passed the examination and received the first license under this law. He opened a practice in New Ulm, but later moved to Germany to specialize in surgery. In 1890 he returned to New Ulm to reopen his hospital. He was Brown County Corner, served on state medical board, school board and was elected New Ulm’s Mayor in 1912.

As New Ulm Mayor, Fritsche hosted many people in the house. In 1927, the German Ambassador to the United States and his wife were guest at the Fritsche home.

In 1961, Fritsche family sold the home and it became a duplex. The house would change hand several times over the years. In 1997 it was converted back into a single family residence, however in 2011 the bank foreclosed on the property.

In 2012, Al and Cindy Stabenow purchased the house and still own it. The Stabenows recently retired as owners of Guten Tag Haus

Following the presentation, Besemer thanked all those that help her research the family histories and those who continued to maintain the historic homes.

“These are people who formed our county,” she said. “These homes hold an enormous amount of memories. We hope they will be lovenly taken care of. They are almost museums to our past. Thank you for preserving them.”
