Zoho Books has simplified the complex process of accounting

Zoho Books has simplified the way our organization does accounting in recent times. We have had better transparency in our company's financials due to Zoho Books. All of our department heads are assigned the financial management of their respective departments, which has only been possible due to the smooth, easy-to-navigate, and understandable interface of Zoho Books. Zoho Books is a great financial accounting tool for any new business, as it is absolutely free to use, thanks to Zoho's intuitive workspace.

ZOHO_ Unmatched Accounting & Invoicing Platform

As a small real estate development company, we needed free billing software and found that ZOHO has some unmatched features. We are relatively new to ZOHO but find it extremely user-friendly and helpful.

Mostly using Invoicing and finding the features extremely useful and user-friendly.

Whatever features so far explored, we don't feel Zoho features need further improvement.

None as of now.

After using Zoho, I can easily handle my GST billing, invoicing, and accounting for my business, all free of cost. I just registered through Agustin and used it for free.

I loved tha it is the best software for small MSMEs who can't invest money on buying expensive softwares.

Just they can improve that they can add serial number tracking feature in the free plan

web based bookkeeping programming intended for independent companies

When you set up your receipt layout, creating invoices is a breeze. Zoho Books integrates seamlessly with both Zoho CRM and Zoho Subscriptions. It would be helpful if there were a way to customize reminder messages depending on the reason the invoice was not paid.

Zoho Books does all that QuickBooks does in a substantially more natural connection point. It gives a lot of adaptability in taking a gander at things from both gathering and money strategies, offers a free seat for my bookkeeper, and permits me to follow my time and bring it straightforwardly into my solicitations. The capacity to take pics of receipts and enter expenses straightforwardly from my telephone application is perfect, as well.

Try not to very comprehend how to modify a receipt, save it and use it for month-to-month charging. Now and again, I need to mess with the receipt to get all of the detail expected to print. For instance, it isn't promptly obvious how to show the dates for which each cost is caused on the receipt. Not having a duplicate of our organization's information put away on our framework makes me apprehensive so we hold paper backups. Clearly, there is a superior emergency course of action to which we could make use.

My Review for Zaho Books

"The arrangement is clear, and the expectation to absorb information is sensible. It's truly ideal to have a decent (and sensible) set of defaults for classifications and record structure."

Zoho Bookings Schedule Good Timming

Zoho Connect allows our clients to easily create and manage schedules for their representatives. Rescheduling appointments does not affect others, and notifications are sent through the email system. Zoho Books is the cloud accounting platform for growing businesses today.

Zoho Books has integrated many little changes that further develop adaptability and convenience, alongside many significant changes. The webpage presently offers custom reports, QR code support in solicitations, further developed auto-examine for advanced monetary records like receipts, and improved coordination with other related Zoho sites.Automation features like payment reminders, scheduling reports and setting triggers for certain workflows can save a business owner a lot of time from the monotonous bookkeeping work.

You start by giving contact and relevant deals charge data. A few elements, similar to solicitations and costs, are remembered for the site as a matter of course, however you can pick which different modules you might want to initiate, for example, stock, buy requests, and time sheets. On the off chance that you're a tiny business, you might need to turn a portion of these off to limit any pointless elements.

there is no point of making an invoice for an item that I do not have enough quantity (enough stock) for. ZOHO books are primitive; I want my sales staff to only access the sales module, not the purchasing, or banking or any accounting features such as customer payables "purchase payables".

How Zoho Books is better/different from its competitors?

They could improve a less complex free application like Wave or Sunrise. Yet, little and average size organizations can profit from the adaptability incorporated into each side of Zoho Books.

You should read this before using Zoho books.

The capacity to raise solicitations, sales orders, and estimates, and the data to be shared with the CRM side of Zoho. We previously had two systems and had to enter client information twice. Using Books and CRM has streamlined our client data and reporting and analysis tools.

Zoho Books is ideally suited for an independent company like mine or for my clients (I work with private ventures of 1-10 representatives). It is sufficiently adaptable and very affordable compared to other products available. It has a few defects, but nothing that can't be worked around easily. It integrates well with other Zoho products, allowing an independent company to build an integrated system on a reasonable budget by combining Books, CRM, Survey, and more. It is definitely my platform of choice when I make recommendations to clients.

About backup

Zoho Books is great to use, but its biggest shortcoming is that it allows you to back up data only twice a month. Additionally, there is no one-click restore data option, which is frustrating. Despite being good software, it fails badly in this aspect.

One click restore of data and auto back up on demand

Auto back and online click restore in case data gets corrupted

Expenses and creator

May be just easy to use

it makes life easier

I have been using this app for the last 7 months, and it works really well for me. Invoicing and accounting are made so easy and professional. The price point is good. We have found the customer service to be timely and helpful as well.

Organized and improved accounting

Comments: perfect to have a compliance with the company's accounting without overlooking something, it is really easy to use and it improved my progress at work

Zoho Books has allowed us to improve in the accounting area, having a perfect administration of expenses, accounts, invoices, payments and other tasks to be carried out, it manages a magnificent online accounting function, keeping all the payment reports up to date without forgetting invoices or payments to make, it is a very complete platform with its tools.

In my personal opinion, it is a perfect platform that there is nothing to improve or change.

The Emperor and Eminent Financial Tool for our Company.

The tool send us financial reports and profit as well as loss forms on time. It has the best interface to use for our accounting processes. The most amazing customer service is served to us. Very fast and quick in invoice processing.

It has delivered to our expectations and it has never disappointed.

Pathetic customer service

Comments: Worst customer services there is no proper reply or information

Book keeping done wright

Comments: I really like Zoho Books, the design is nice and intuitive. I learned to use it very fast. Support was great when needed.

Zoho Books is an exceptional accounting service, it offers a free version for small business but paid version too. Works great with bank reconciliation and is packed of good features that you found only on expensive software. Getting reports like P&L is easy and the reports looks good. Integrates good with other Zoho apps if you are using them.

No cons for Zoho Books, the software works good.

Brilliant Accounting and Book Keeping software!

Great! Not been using it long but it is a vast improvement on functionality and reporting compared to old software.

Love the customer portal! Our clients can use self service to manage their account with us and get all their invoice and payment records as well as access to documents like our T&Cs. The invoice generating is very quick and easy with lots of customisation and extra data collecting boxes. The app is reliable and easy to use with lots of functionality too. Retainer invoice function is great for us as we offer clients a promotion to top up their account in advance to receive discounts on future invoices so this works perfectly!

There is no auto connection to my particular bank yet so can't connect it all automatically as I did with my previous software however it allows for bulk uploads so you can still reconcile everything.

Reason for choosing Zoho Books

It was included in Zoho One plan

Reasons for switching to Zoho Books

Lack of additional functions and reports weren't as relevant to our needs. Zoho Books came free with Zoho One plan and we were paying for Quickbooks so made sense to cut this cost.

CUSTOMER SUPPORT

It's an excellent internet service for small businesses

In general, Zoho Books is the finest accounting software for start-ups and small businesses. The following functionalities are included in this simple to use application: Assign Shortcuts, Create Quick Reports a UX that is easy to use, Software as a service (SaaS): It's simple to use and integrates well with the rest of the Zoho suite. Updates that arrive quickly and on a frequent basis.

As a whole, Zoho Books is an excellent tool for new businesses and organizations. It's an excellent choice. Having everything in one location is a great feature of this book. The reports are highly user-friendly, and the balance is simple to handle. Books has a wide range of features and is well-integrated with the company's other products.

When a financial institution makes an update, Zoho Books takes a long time to make the change, making it difficult to keep track of all expenditures. Statement import instructions are out-of-date. Customer service is terrible; no one ever tells you when an issue will be fixed.

Zoho's cloud-based architecture allows us to access the service from almost anywhere, and the app's approval capabilities allow us to approve tasks right from our smartphones.

Blocks you when you need it.

Currently, Zoho Books is not capable of handling volume entries. You will be blocked if you go too fast, as I do. Then you have to wait hours before you can get back in. I created several users to be able to do my work. Also, the batch import feature does not work, since it does not pick up the product code on multi-line invoices. Our pricing went up last year, but Zoho's recurring invoices didn't pick up the new pricing, and the customers were invoiced at the old price, which caused massive service problems. Because of this, we are moving to another software, and I cancelled the auto-renewal with Zoho. Our access was immediately blocked (despite paying for the remainder of the year in advance), and now nobody has access to our own accounting. Currently, there is no one available in support to assist us, so we are waiting for a callback. It's beyond frustrating. The system is terrible, and the support is even worse. I do not recommend Zoho to any company.

It looks modern and intuitive. It has a sales portal that customers can access online and view their invoices and payments. That is the feature that sold the program to us.

The debit and credit side is the wrong way round as it follows the Indian system. For example, in the UK a sales balance of -£100 means that the customer owes £100 pounds and has to pay. In Zoho however, it means that the customer is in credit by £100 and would potentially need a refund. Blocks you if you type and click your mouse fast. There are problems with batch invoicing, and it takes a lot of time to review invoices one by one. The system does not extract more than 100 statements at a time. You really should find another system if your sales ledger is large.

Great Software

I really enjoyed this software. It is must easier to use than most of its competitors. It is also having some of the best pricing vs performance that I have found.

Zoho was very easy software to setup for someone who does not have a lot of experience. We used this software to mostly to track estimates. When estimates were approved and accepted by the customer it was simple to turn them into invoices.

Once you add certain items into the system they cannot be deleted. For example, if you accidently add a wrong item you will have to cancel it out on the books with another entry.

Powerful and Invaluable tool at an incredible price

We love Zoho ability to access from anywhere and allows a business owner to monitor things even when they are not on site. The ease of use and consistency makes it very easy for training purposes and day to day use.

We love the way you can add further modules and expand into other areas like inventory with ease. The support is fast and efficient with a positive outcome every time. The consistency through every module bill s, invoicing, purchasing makes it a breeze to operate.

The only one annoyance is the search from some screens you need to know the exact customer name or item name to search. Where as some screens use a keyword search which is easy and fast to locate the information.

With the ability to integrate other modules was vital to us. The product had more vital features like re occurring invoices and billing. Stock control was important and a lot of other products don't have this ability alongside things like project managment.

Lack on consistency with previous product and even doing the slightest thing seemed over complicated.

Along with Pros, these are the limitations I faced:Limited inventory management featuresLack of advanced project management featuresBasic time tracking functionalitySome features can be confusing for new usersLimited integrations compared to other accounting softwareLimited customization options for invoices and other forms.

Its worth considering that we chose Zoho Books over alternative products due to its user-friendly interface, integrations with other Zoho apps, affordable pricing, and strong customer support. Excellent software - use it daily to keep my records up to date, invoice customers and process payments. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Easy to use, mobile app is also excellent for updating on the move. Clear reporting, easy to take a snapshot of business performance. Tailorable so invoices are fully branded and customer e-mails can be tailored. Love the payment receipt feature so clients are updated once payment processed.

Can be a little tricky to set the profit & loss to cover the right months, need to play around with the dates.

Efficient, affordable took that's essential for my business

I switched to Zoho Books from FreshBooks a little over a year ago when the cost of FreshBooks became unmanageable and free options, such as Wave, did not serve my purposes. I was also looking for a cloud invoicing/expense-tracking system that was less glitchy and easier to use. Zoho Books is all of that. As a sole proprietor, the price suits my budget perfectly. Clients have told me that paying me through Zoho is much easier than paying me through FreshBooks or Wave. At tax time, it's easy to send my Profit & Loss report to my accountant. I also like that I can attach receipts to my expenses. I'm very thankful for Zoho Books and hope they continue to meet the needs of sole proprietors like me.

Zoho Books is easy for me to use and much easier for my clients to use when paying me. They've given me positive feedback about their invoicing experiences. It's also affordable, which was a huge deciding factor when I switched from another cloud invoicing program.

I wish I could see when a client has "viewed" my invoice. Also, I didn't realize that listing vendors on my expenses, such as Amazon, would count as "Contacts" and use up some of my slots. I'm glad I know now and I'm rectifying it.

Although both Wave and And.co offer free versions, I found them harder to use (particularly Wave). Clients found Wave a bit glitchy and the software was not intuitive.

FreshBooks raised their rates to outrageous levels and gave little advance notice about it. The software was glitchy and my clients were complaining about having difficulty paying. Their system went down at least once a week, which has fortunately not happened to me yet with Zoho Books. Although FreshBooks touts their live customer support, I encountered some rather cranky people there (they were probably fed up with getting calls about the humongous price increase). I'd rather interact with a helpful Zoho support person via chat than an unpleasant FreshBooks support person by phone.

great option for accounting software

There's been a little bit of a learning curve - there are a few things that are just done a little differently than in other software. However, I've been able to accomplish everything I had in previous software. The most significant aspect to me, though, has been that Zoho offers a lot of accompanying software - i.e., not software that's needed to make Books work, but software with complementary uses - without seeming like they're trying to squeeze every last dollar out of me. Quite unlike Intuit.

It does everything that I need it to do, and for far less than it's competition.

There are a couple things that could be streamlined, although they don't lessen to actual functioning of the software.

Functionality and cost. I used Quickbooks-Desktop for years, but the online software that's been developed more recently has too many advantages to keep using it. I also used Xero for a few years, and liked a lot of features - but it seemed geared for a different kind of business and lacked a few things I needed. Then I tried Quickbooks Online - it was barely within my budget, but I liked the features - but then they increased the price (significantly) after only one year of using it. But Zoho has really fit the bill - all the functionality I need, and at a price that's just a fraction of QBO's.

Intuit just keeps increasing the price on pretty much everything, justifying it by claiming to add features - though the added features never had any use to me. Plus, I needed to lease a number of add-ons to be able to have QBO work the way I'd expect it to.

My overall experience with Zoho has been pleasant. I can easily create invoice even on the go with my phone. I can quickly generate reports to check performance of the company and individual employees and I can track business expenses. The best part is also that I can easily link the app to my bank to reconcile what is in the bank with what is on Zoho book.

The layout of the website is user-friendly. The cellphone app makes it easy for you to instantly upload receipts and invoices for any purchases made. I'm in Engineering and we are three different teams. Zoho allows us to assign expenses to each employee and to a particular project should we choose to. This means that you can easily track the expenses of each team and be quick to spot any problems with over expenses. You also get reports on different modules like sales, you can be able to track sales by sales person and assess performance of each employee. There is also an option for customers to pay online which makes it really easy to make payments. In addition from the different modules you can customize fields to suit your needs at any point in time. Lastly they have added an awesome feature now where you can create a topic and comment on invoices and estimates and have an ongoing chat with other users that on the account regarding the invoice under which the chat is created and with only those invited users.

When I migrated from the software I used before Zoho to Zoho I had to upload the invoices from the previous software and the challenge was that Zoho did not allow me to specify and describe the invoiced item. All invoices that were uploaded ended up with the same description which wasn't pleasant. When you assign expenses to employees, Zoho will not allow you to use the same email address for different "employees". This is unpleasant because as an admin person for my company, there are general expenses that I cannot assign to a specific person that need to be assigned under general expenses using my email address. There are also expenses that I incur on my own as an employee of the company that need to be assigned to me alone still using my email address and Zoho won't allow me to use the same email address for these two separate scenarios. Also when you create an estimate and on that estimate you don't add tax, when you convert the estimate to be an invoice Zoho does not allow you to add tax if you want to.

The ease of layout and migration from the software I was already using. Also the fact that I trusted the Wave accounting and them recommending Zoho to me just gave Zoho an ultimate advantage over other products.

Wave suggested the switch since they were partners with Zoho. Wave stopped operating in my region.

Great for a small business

We moved from an ancient copy of Billings (a Mac-only program), and chose Zoho over the main competition based on ease of use and the need to handle customer retainers smoothly.

The setup is fairly straightforward, and the learning curve is very manageable. It's really nice to have a good (and reasonable) set of defaults for categories and account structure. That made initial use and customization pretty easy to do. The documentation is generally good, and tip links are numerous.

The only thing I find even slightly annoying is that the feed connection to the bank account is often "broken", but on the positive side the status is clear and whatever issues exist seem to fix themselves automatically within a day or two. It's not really a show-stopper; it's just annoying when I want to "clean up" things and the bank feed isn't fully current.

Zoho was less expensive than QuickBooks, and seemed to be more approachable. Wave didn't handle retainers as well (at least at that time).

The previous product had been discontinued.

Has the potential, but not the backup

Absolutely terrible. If not for the terrible support, this product would actually be quite good. But for anyone who is new to any system, there's always questions and help needed. That's the nature of IT. And unfortunately Zoho have completely missed the mark and don't appear to care about improving on that at all.

The software is extensive and seems easy enough to use. Supports advanced accounting functionality and would be a good solution for any small business.

The customer service is absolutely appalling. In fact, it's not even fair to call it customer service because it's more like communicating with the abyss. No matter how many times you call or email, no one follows up - and if they do it's certainly not in a timely manner. They call you at ridiculous times and then email to say they called and to call them back. You call them back and no one is available. You leave a message for the agent to call you back and no one does.

The business was ceasing operations outside of the US & Canada - while I could have continued to use the solution it wasn't clear whether existing functionality was going to change and therefore break how I used the system - and if that were the case, because I'm not in their target market region, no support would have been available for me.

Migrated from Wave to Zoho Books. Horrible experience

Precious time wasted. After reading their manuals, watching their videos, Googling answers, I finally had a one-on-one training session with a trainer who advised me to employ the services of a Zoho-experienced accountant in South Africa. We had thought that because of Wave Accounting's recommendation, that Zoho Books would be similarly user-friendly and intuitive. It is not at all.

They seem to have an impressive array of apparently useful functions.

This is the most non-intuitive, difficult, cumbersome, obscure programme I have ever worked with. Example: even in deleting our account after wasting hours trying to become functional, the instructions seemed to be clear: Log in to your account. Click the user picture. Click My Account. In the account page, select the Preferences tab. Click Close Account in the left menu. Except THERE IS NO PREFERENCES TAB IN THE LEFT MENU. They forgot to tell you to click on Settings first, and THEN select Preferences. A perfect example of what to expect from the entire platform.

Because of Wave's recommendation.

Because Wave recommended South African users switch to Zoho.

With Zoho we are able to easily stay on top of our finances with limited effort required. The ability to correct historical errors easily makes maintaining and accurate general ledger a breeze. I really like the professional look and feel of the documents generated such as invoices, orders etc.

With unparalleled customisation and ease of use as well as the the ability to correct previous errors Zoho books has made the accounting function so much simpler than our previous software. The automation of numerous tasks has been especially useful. The professional way in which we are able to engage with our customers and suppliers has also raised our credibility.

Probably the only criticism I can raise is that the reporting section could offer more month by month reports as a standard feature, although they may be easily configured using the tool provided.

The value proposition of Zoho One with the multiply module functionality was very compelling and the Books module was able to more than cater for our small business requirements.

Zoho Books is helping us automate many processes that we do every day on our business, many tasks and many payments that we receive throughout the week. It is a software that is extremely helpful when it comes to setting up a workflow that will benefit our work environment, and it provides useful solutions to manage payments, invoices, and all the financial data that comes with it, it has made everything easier because we don't have to worry about manually processing every payment or manually creating and sending an invoice, with Zoho Books, all these things become simple and we are able to keep a directory with all the crucial information for payments and invoices.

Zoho Books is an accounting software that provides the best experience when automating the accounting workflow. It has a great variety of tools that help enhance the process and I like how once the data has been imported, it only takes a few clicks to process payments and other billing options. Also, the option to manage all invoices is pretty beneficial, it allows me to keep track of all the payments that clients need to make and it provides a place where I can keep track of these invoices every month and know how much people owe our business; thanks to this feature, it also allows me to process payments differently, because I can have all the data in this single place and it makes it easier to integrate with many payment options so everything is done quicker, providing a nice experience for both ourselves as a business and for our clients. I like that Zoho Books is very user-friendly and it was not difficult to import all the data in order to start using it.

I think that the customer support is lacking a lot, it feels like they keep trying to be responsive but still, they do take a lot of time to get back to you once reached out. I don't like this part of the software because it does not feel like I can fully rely on them for help.

I would highly recommend using it especially in the businesses that would also use other software from Zoho-like e-mail or CRM-they're well priced and are extremely cost-effective.

Zoho Books is lightning fast-miles ahead of the competition if it comes to the speed of the software. The actual user experience is very close to the desktop software. Another good feature is its customizability - you'll find a plethora of options with Zoho, obviously designed with advanced reporting tools that come with Zoho Suite in mind. What's important - importing and exporting stuff from Zoho is also very simple - that comes in handy if you want to switch to another software from Zoho, you'll be able to do it-most counterparts allow you to migrate data only partly. Importing journals-extremely important feature-works flawlessly.

No integrated payroll functionality - small flaw, as you can easily import journals from the software of your choice. Average bank reconciliation - filtering records is difficult, custom sorting as well. No itegrated CIS solution. No reporting directly to HMRC.

Very good, but lacks some of the basics

Switched from Quickbooks to ZohoBooks. Overall, ZohoBooks is very good. The site is always up and running very quickly. Tech support is excellent in both speed and quality. The software is actually fun to use. However, it does lack some of the basic functions that seem should have been in there from the beginning such as ability to print deposit slips, and there's no running total on the side of accounts so when you're looking for a mistake, it makes it very difficult to find. One feature that our business desperately is ability to pre-send invoices to people on a recurring basis before their due date. Quickbooks has had this ability back since the days of DOS (20 years ago). We're limping around right now trying to work without these basic needs in hopes that they will soon come. On the otherhand, Zoho does keep adding new features on a consistent basis. Sometimes just simple design changes but at least you get the feeling they are still working on it. -Highly recommended, however proceed with caution because there are some very basic things missing and they don't seem to be in a hurry to resolve this. It's almost the year 2017 and I'm adding up deposits by calculator and filling in deposit slips by pen. Shouldn't be ;-\

Excellent/fast support. Interface can be fun to use and is quick to respond. Development seems to be ongoing.

Lacks basic functions like deposit slip printing (and automatically transferring those funds to bank from Undeposited Funds), ability to pre-send recurring invoices, inability to set simple defaults such as default account to accept payment to (always need to manually select Undeposited Funds when accepting checks) and no running total in account ledgers such as Undeposited Funds (how are you supposed to find and fix errors, mistakes?)

‍ our take:.

Zoho was founded in India in 1996 and has a suite of business software that includes over 50 apps. Among the apps are Zoho CRM, Zoho Inventory, and Zoho People in addition to Zoho Books, its accounting software. Zoho Books has a free plan (for businesses doing less than $50k per year) and pitches a tight integration with its suite of additional software. However, it lacks some of the functionality of our recommended tools ( QuickBooks and Xero ) which can make routine tasks clunky and time consuming. It also has fewer integrations with third-parties than our recommended tools which will force you into the Zoho app ecosystem for better or worse (likely worse). This will make it more difficult to scale with your business than our recommended tools. Finally, fewer accountants will be familiar with its software compared to our recommended tools.

Zoho Books Overview:

Zoho was founded in 1996 by Sridhar Vembu and Tony Thomas in Chennai, India as a software company called Vembu Software. It was started from a modest apartment in the outskirts of Chennai. After initially focusing on network management software, the company rebranded as AdventNet in 2005 and then Zoho Corporation in 2009 as it shifted its focus to cloud-based business software. Their target market was Small Office / Home Office so they originally wanted the domain name SOHO.com, but it wasn't available. Instead, they settled on the similar but available ZOHO.com. The idea for Zoho was to build a large, cloud based software suite with many product offerings and sell it for less than competitors like Salesforce to small and medium sized businesses. Zoho was bootstrapped from the beginning and grew to become a major player, generating over $650 million in revenue by 2021. Throughout its growth, Zoho has stayed true to its roots in India, hiring and training young Indian talent in their own schools. Zoho is an impressive story of a company that was able to build a massive, global SaaS company from India all while staying bootstrapped.

Zoho Books FAQs:

What is Zoho Books used for?

Zoho Books is cloud based accounting software designed for small and medium size businesses.

Why is Zoho Books better than Excel?

Zoho Books has many advantages over excel:

  • Pre-built integrations that you would have to build manually in Excel.
  • Much better audit trail than Excel, so you can track who is making changes to your books.
  • Many more checks to prevent you from accidentally making a mistake in your books
  • Pre-built reporting tools to make sense of your financial data

Excel is okay to launch your eCommerce business, but we recommend switching to a proper accounting tool once your business scales beyond around $100k in annual revenue.

Can Zoho Books import QuickBooks?

Yes, Zoho can import QuickBooks data, but we don’t typically recommend it. Zoho and QuickBooks structure their data differently and the import from QuickBooks will require time and effort. Typically accountants will charge a couple of thousand dollars to assist the transition from one to the other.

Do I need a bookkeeper if I use Zoho Books?

You don’t NEED a bookkeeper since Zoho is user-friendly enough for most users, but we typically recommend one so that you can focus on product and marketing while someone else spends time keeping your books up to date.

Is Zoho good for eCommerce?

Zoho definitely works for eCommerce, however, we don't recommend it. We think there are better alternatives (Xero and QuickBooks) that will integrate with more third-party apps without restricting you to the Zoho ecosystem of apps.

Does Zoho work with Shopify?

Zoho Inventory has a direct integration with Shopify, but Zoho Books does not. You will have to use Zoho Flow (their Zapier competitor) to integrate Shopify with Zoho Books.

Is Zoho ISO 27001 certified?

Yes, Zoho is formally ISO 27001, ISO27017 & ISO27018 certified.

Is Zoho SOC 2 compliant?

Yes, Zoho is SOC 2 Type II compliant.

Is Zoho PCI compliant?

Zoho Books Review: Pros, Cons, Pricing

We like Zoho Books’ time-tracking features, strong inventory management, and easy integrations with other Zoho products. It also offers a free version with limited functionality but even its paid plans are less expensive than QuickBooks.

We don’t think Zoho Books is for companies searching for a comprehensive system beyond simple accounting. Zoho is an ecosystem of product suites that can integrate in a piecemeal fashion. You’ll need additional apps for inventory, CRM, and more.

We recommend Zoho Books for small to midsize businesses in online retail spaces and digital marketing. Its user-friendly design and simple navigation are attractive to employees new to accounting. Zoho accounting is great for growing organizations that plan to expand their functionality into inventory management, project tracking, and other areas.

What Features Are Missing?

Comprehensive features: Zoho offers an exhaustive range of product suites, each depending on the other to bring full functionality to your business. The costs of these add-ons can quickly add up.

For example, Zoho Inventory provides warehouse management and order fulfillment, but their Standard package is $59 per month billed annually. You need Zoho CRM for customer relationship management, but you’ll pay $14 per user per month (billed annually) for their Standard service.

Limited support: Zoho offers phone, live chat, and email support 24/5, Monday through Friday. However, support is not active on Saturdays and Sundays, so users experiencing issues over the weekend will need to wait for assistance.

Custom modules refer to a feature where users can record data not pulled by predefined modules in the software. A custom module allows users to specify fields and views particular to their business needs.

Zoho Books vs. QuickBooks

Zoho Books and QuickBooks both offer bookkeeping capabilities for small businesses. However there are some key differences. QuickBooks is primarily an accounting software with time tracking and payroll capabilities, while Zoho provides a variety of business modules beyond financial management.

Zoho Books offers a free plan, while QuickBooks utilizes paid subscription plans. Zoho Books is pretty generous with its invoicing limits, but QuickBooks Online provides unlimited invoicing. Zoho Books is less expensive than QuickBooks after its 3-month discount period, though Zoho will increase costs as you add more product suites to your accounting module.

Who Owns Zoho?

Tony Thomas and CEO Sridhar Vembu founded Zoho in 1996 . With over 80 million users in over 150 countries, Zoho offers platforms for CRM, inventory control, accounting, helpdesk capabilities, and more.

Is Zoho Books Free?

Zoho Books provides a free package, though the features are limited compared to the paid plans. For example, you can only give access to one user and one accountant. Additionally, you’ll receive basic financial reporting, mileage tracking, bank reconciliation, and up to 1,000 invoices per annum.

The Standard plan starts at $15 per organization monthly and increases access to three users. It’s not until you pay for the Professional plan at $40 per organization per month that you can track bills, landed costs, and project profitability.

  • Alternatives

Wave Screenshot

We recommend Zoho bookkeeping for small to mid-level businesses in online retail and digital marketing. It’s the next logical step for the small business owner ready to move on from manual entry and spreadsheets. Zoho Books automates recurring invoices and billing, payment reminders, and conversions from estimates to invoices.

However, Zoho accounting isn’t the best option for those requiring an all-in-one solution beyond financial management and basic inventory control. As retailers scale up, they will likely need to incorporate product suites for Zoho CRM and Inventory to manage a higher volume of customers and transactions.

We think Zoho Books is a top pick for companies needing an inexpensive financial management solution with responsive functionality and powerful integrations.

User Reviews of Zoho Books

zoho books review india

My overall experience with Zoho Books is incredible. It works so well for us.

A Great Online Accounting Software

The simplicity of Zoho Books makes it a top solution. It is also an affordable online accounting software.

When the business outgrew a simple paper set up, we began looking into software for greater automation. We ended up finding Zoho Books and we really like the system. It offers 24 hour support services and the support offered is fantastic. It adequately manages all of our accounting needs and within a reasonable budget.

Zoho Books is the upgrade from Zoho Invoice. Effectively, if you have a 3rd party accounting system you may want to use Zoho Invoice for sending out invoices and getting paid. If you plan to use Zoho Books as your main accounting platform then you don’t need to use Zoho Invoice as Zoho Books has everything Zoho Invoice has.

In Zoho Books, you have complete control over your company’s income and expenses, mileage claims, VAT returns, and finance reports.

The dashboard gives a view of receivables and payables. The sales module gives you the ability to create invoices, recurring invoices, and payments that have been received. The system makes it easy to create a schedule of recurring invoices.

Since it’s a cloud-based accounting software, it’s with you always, whether you’re in the office or at the coffee shop. When using this software, I think back to when we’d call out accountants in business meetings for incorrect statement of accounts.

Now, we have many clients using Zoho Books and we manage their accounts from anywhere we are. Even for our accounting, we use Zoho Books. In fact, we may go to a client for a meeting and they ask for the statement of accounts right now, and I open up my mobile app and give it to them. Or we can just send it to them easily without even having to ask an accountant to print things out.

Overall I’m quite impressed with all Zoho Books can do. There’s a lot of functionality packed in here. I think the software fits nicely between invoicing software like Freshbooks, the micro business competitors like Wave and Kashoo, and it’s small business competitors like QuickBooks and Xero. If you haven’t checked out Zoho Books yet, I’d give it a try.

Zoho Books: Pricing

Zoho books: features, zoho books: performance, zoho books: ease of use, zoho books: support, zoho books: final verdict.

Zoho Books is just one small part of a much greater business concern based in India that offers all manner of software for anyone and everyone. With its clean and simple cloud-based interface Zoho Books makes a great cost-effective accounting option if you’re a freelancer , sole trader or someone running a small business .

The benefit with Zoho Books is that it’s also quite scalable, so therefore offers beefier versions for those with larger business concerns, or anyone intent on expanding their operations. While the desktop route is a solid one, Zoho Books also has an impressive app presence, making it a good mobile bet too especially if you're constantly on the move.

It's a tax and accountancy software package that sits alongside the likes of competitors FreshBooks , QuickBooks , Xero , Sage Business Cloud Accounting , Kashoo and Kashflow .

Zoho Books has, it explains, a pricing plan for everyone and the service has actually become a little cheaper than it used to be for each of the current packages. There’s also a free version for businesses with revenues under $50K per annum.

Standard now costs $20 per organization, per month. For that you get up to 50 contacts (as in the maximum amount of customers or vendors you can create transactions for), 3 users (as in yourself and your accountant) and automated workflows.

Professional costs $50 per organization, per month up to 5 users while Premium ups that to $70 per month with 10 users and Elite is currently $150 per month, also with 10 users. Naturally, the feature set gets added to with each step up the package ladder. Top of the pile is Ultimate , which is aimed at larger users and offers the ability to invite 15 users and boasts 25 custom modules amongst many other features and functions.

Incidentally, sign up to pay annually rather than monthly and savings can be made on all packages. Zoho does offer additional add-ons, more about which you can glean from its website.

Zoho Books

Zoho Books might be an affordable cloud-based accountancy solution, but that doesn't make it any less feature-laden. In fact, taking a tour of the package we found that it has a pretty formidable arsenal of tools and options. That includes invoicing estimating, a client portal, the ability to track expenses, carry out billing, track your banking movements, manage projects and keep an eye on your levels of inventory.

Sales orders, purchase orders, VAT and online payments are all in there too, making Zoho Books fully featured by anyone's standards. Adding additional value is a solid reporting area, the ability to automate your workflow and, finally, enjoy the convenience of having all your documents stored in one place.

Zoho Books also comes in app form for iOS, Android and Windows. Similarly, you can configure online payments for the likes of Stripe, PayPal, Square and more.

Zoho Books

During our time using Zoho Books we found the software-as-a-service solution excellent. There are a lot of tabs, menus and other options available and, with a decent internet connection, we could zip around the site without any issues whatsoever. Connecting to financial institutions, which you’ll want to do to bulk up the appeal of your accountancy package, is fast and efficient.

There’s also the capacity for using any one of many Zoho add-ons to increase the potential of your package. These can be found via the Integrations menu. Performance is further boosted if you choose to dip into the Automation area of the interface, which Zoho Books provides to streamline workflow more efficiently. It’s very worthy of inspection.

In addition, items called Web Tabs add extra usability within the interface if you want to create and use them to access frequently called-upon features and functions.

Zoho Books

Setting up Zoho Books could not be simpler. As with all cloud-based services you’ll need to create an account, pick a password and then work your way through the steps. Input your organization’s details, opt in or out of VAT and then pick down through the features checklist. These can be enabled either on or off depending on what suits your needs.

Usefully, Invoices, Credit Notes, Expenses, Bills, Recurring Invoices and more are available by default in Zoho Books. Press the ‘Get Started’ button and you’ll be read to go. Once you’re inside the dashboard area everything is very self-explanatory, with core menus down the left-hand side and more along the top. Another bonus with Zoho Books is the extensive list of available templates for creating everything from invoices through to customer statements and all points in-between.

Zoho Books

Zoho Books comes complete with its own free support infrastructure, which arrives via numerous avenues. There’s 24-hour unlimited support 5 days a week and this can be accessed via email, or by using the built-in live chat options. Failing that, Zoho Books issues can be tackled over the phone via a toll free hotline.

We’re also impressed with the beefy selection of supporting options that can be found via the website. There’s help documentation, FAQs, business guides and forums too, which all add extra weight to the overall support structure.

Zoho Books

Zoho Books is a fine pay-as-you-go cloud-based accounting option that provides you with many if not all of the tools you’ll need to keep your business accounts in good shape. While the cloud-based desktop route is a great one to take we’re also really impressed with the level of detail applied to Zoho Books range of apps. These have been nicely put together and deliver everything you need to keep tabs on your accounts on the move.

We also like the way that Zoho seems more than amenable to helping you scale your accounting package too, with larger users being encouraged to contact the company in order to get a solution more accurately tailored to their needs. However, as it stands in any of the more off-the-shelf guises Zoho Books still has plenty to commend.

Table of Contents

  • Zoho’s ability to automate financial functions is almost unparalleled among the accounting software products we reviewed.
  • Tech-savvy business owners will love that the software includes its own scripting language to code custom functions.
  • Zoho requires coding abilities to make the most of its automation features, which may be challenging for business owners who aren’t tech-savvy.
  • The cap on the number of monthly transactions and users may dissuade high-volume, employee-heavy businesses from using the software.

Small business accounting tasks can be tedious, time-consuming and error-prone. Thankfully, Zoho Books makes your company’s finances easier to manage by automating processes and helping business owners develop custom functions using a unique scripting language. You can use the platform’s scheduled reminders and additional notifications to reduce errors and stop financial items from slipping through the cracks. For these reasons, Zoho Books is our choice for the best accounting software for automating processes.

Zoho Books Editor's Rating:

Why we chose zoho books as the best for automating processes.

Small business owners often wear many hats. They usually aren’t accountants or bookkeepers , but they often play that role regardless. They must issue invoices, send reminders for those invoices, make payments, and track expenses and projects. For business owners who want to offload time-consuming financial tracking tasks, particularly those related to accounting, Zoho Books is worth considering.

We found that the strength of Zoho’s accounting software lies in its ability to automate tedious, error-prone accounting tasks. Unlike many competing accounting software products we reviewed, Zoho features a dedicated automation component packed with valuable tools, including the ability to set rules to automate workflow . We were also impressed that you can program email alerts, send automated invoice reminders and set up in-app notifications to ensure you don’t forget critical tasks.

More tech-savvy business owners can even build custom tools using Zoho’s proprietary coding language. For these reasons and more, Zoho Books is our best pick for businesses in search of accounting software with automated processes.

Ease of Use

During our test of Zoho Books, we paid particular attention to the ease of use. We like that Zoho keeps the interface minimalistic and uncluttered. A toolbar on the left side houses the software’s primary features, and each has a drop-down menu of additional tools. The main dashboard is attractive and displays essential business statistics, such as accounts receivable, accounts payable and cash flow . Based on our experience, users won’t have any trouble navigating Zoho’s intuitive interface and figuring out how to perform essential tasks.

That said, things can be trickier beyond the main dashboard. Zoho allows users to drill down into their financial data and automate tedious tasks — a significant strength over alternative programs. However, we found that there’s a learning curve for performing more advanced automations. Zoho also features its own scripting language that will likely delight tech-minded users but may discourage less-tech-savvy ones.

Zoho Books Features

During our search for the best accounting software for small businesses, we tested Zoho Books’ main features firsthand. This solution shines thanks to its must-have accounting software features coupled with automation tools. Here’s an overview of some of Zoho’s most notable capabilities, especially those designed to automate processes.

Payment Reminders

During our testing, we found that Zoho makes it easy and convenient to automate payment email reminders and create multiple messages that go out at different times. For example, you can create a payment reminder email and set it to be sent a week before the invoice is due, again on the due date and once more a week after the due date if you haven’t yet received payment.

If you connect your account to one of the best credit card processors , you can accept invoice payments online. Compatible payment gateways include PayPal, Braintree, Stripe and Square. Learn more about these options in our review of Stripe and our Square review .

Zoho Books custom workflows

Automated Report Generation

One cool feature we really liked from our test run is the ability to schedule reports to be automatically generated weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually and emailed to you in the format of your choice (PDF, CSV or XLS). You can also set up the software to automatically email you a weekly report with an overview of your business’s performance. This report includes summaries of your income and expenses, cash flow, top expenses and active projects. More than 40 standard reports are built into the software, including general ledger reports, profit and loss statements , sales by item, time sheet details, accounts receivable aging and aged payables.

Custom Functions

Another part of our demo that really stood out was Zoho’s ability to create customized automation tools. Tech-savvy business owners might appreciate Zoho’s ability to code custom functions with the program’s scripting language. We also like that Zoho’s coders can help less-tech-inclined business owners build what they need to automate additional functions. During our test of the software, we saw firsthand how small businesses can leverage Zoho’s scripting language, called Deluge, to create custom solutions. Of all the accounting software we reviewed, the only other service that allows extensive customization is Sage Business Cloud Accounting. [See our Sage accounting software review .]

Zoho Books scripting language

Not every accounting vendor we reviewed provides a mobile app. We liked that not only does Zoho Books have a mobile app, but it’s available for iOS, Android and Windows mobile devices. You can use the app to create invoices, run reports, capture receipts, record expenses and track billable time no matter where you are. Users rate Zoho’s app highly; it has a score of 4.8 out of 5 in the Apple App Store and a 4.6 out of 5 in the Google Play store.

Client Portal

We were impressed by Zoho’s client portal, which makes it easy for your customers to view their invoices and pay their bills online. You can also use the portal to send estimates and chat with clients within the program. Zoho even alerts you when a customer views an estimate or invoice, accepts or declines an estimate, or makes a payment.

Another key feature we tried is Zoho’s invoicing tool. We appreciate that Zoho lets you create projects, set tasks, track the time you spend on them, and invoice customers for billable time. The client-approval feature also lets customers approve time sheets before you bill them. The software even allows you to track and invoice billable expenses — a feature not all competitors offer.

During our testing of Zoho, we went through the process of creating an invoice. We like that the template gallery has extensive invoice customization options, more than most competitors. You can choose from 16 templates, several languages and multiple fonts to create custom professional invoices . You can also add your logo or brand image and a background image. Finally, you can customize the colors for the background, accents, your company’s name, the customer’s name and the rest of the text on the page. Other document types, such as estimates and payment receipts, are also customizable.

Zoho does a good job of letting you customize the look and feel of your invoices. However, we found the invoice-customization tool a bit less intuitive than those of some competitors we reviewed — something less-tech-savvy users should consider. In our view, FreshBooks offers better invoicing capabilities.

Inventory Tracking

Although inventory-tracking tools are available only on Zoho’s Professional plan and above, we found them helpful during our test run of the software. Zoho shows you the available quantity when you enter an item on an invoice. If you enter a higher number than the amount of stock you have on hand, the number turns red. We also liked that you can set up the system to automatically email you a notification when the inventory drops below a specific number.

If your inventory needs are more advanced — for instance, if you need to bundle items — you can add the Zoho Inventory app to the accounting program for an additional cost. Businesses that carry many items or customized products or have more complex inventory needs might want to read our review of Xero , which recently beefed up its inventory automation features.

Integrations

We like that Zoho Books integrates with other Zoho systems and several third-party programs, including payment gateways , tax programs and Zapier, which allows you to connect to hundreds of additional apps. Check out our review of Zoho CRM to learn about another Zoho program that can work with Zoho Books.

Audit Trail

One particularly helpful feature we noted during our testing was Zoho’s audit trail. When you view a transaction, Zoho’s audit trail shows you when the transaction was created, if it was converted to or from another transaction type, and if the transaction has been updated, sent or paid. It notes the name of the user who made edits, along with the date and time of those edits, and allows you to add comments to the transaction. This is ideal for businesses that have multiple people tracking company finances.

Zoho Books Pricing

Beyond the time-saving automation tools, Zoho Books stands out for its overall affordability, especially considering its many desirable features. There are five paid plans, plus a basic free version for very small businesses. The free version further distinguishes Zoho from its rivals, as most don’t offer free software.

However, Zoho’s paid tiers do run a bit more expensive than other accounting software we reviewed, such as Xero and Sage. You can add a few optional features to your account for an extra fee, which obviously raises the cost as well.

Zoho gives you the option of a month-to-month contract or an annual plan. Monthly prices are shown below, but Zoho offers a hefty discount if you pay for the entire year upfront.

  • Free plan: This option is available for businesses with less than $50,000 in annual revenue. It supports one user and one accountant and includes a fairly robust set of features, including 1,000 annual invoices, recurring invoices, automatic payment reminders and email-only support.
  • Standard plan: The first paid level costs $20 per month and allows up to three users: you, your accountant and another user. You can manage up to 5,000 invoices and use the software to create invoices and projects, track expenses and reconcile business bank accounts . This package includes mile tracking, recurring invoicing and automatic bank feeds.
  • Professional plan: This plan costs $50 per month and allows five users. In addition to the features in the Standard package, it comes with purchase-ordering and inventory-tracking tools, the ability to create sales orders, and support for multiple currencies.
  • Premium plan: This tier costs $70 per month and supports 10 users. You get everything in the two other paid plans, as well as your own custom domain, access to a vendor portal, and integrations with Zoho Sign and Twilio.
  • Elite plan: The Elite package costs $150 per month and supports 10 users. In addition to everything in the Premium plan, you can generate unlimited custom reports, access advanced inventory management features and handle multiple currencies.
  • Ultimate plan: The most inclusive plan costs $275 per month and supports up to 15 users and 25 custom modules. This is Zoho’s highest-tier offering and includes advanced data analytics on top of everything in the Elite package.

Additional users cost $3 per month for all plans. Another Zoho add-on service, called Autoscans, costs $10 per month for 50 scans. When you upload documents, such as vendor invoices or receipts, this feature automatically scans them and extracts the data to create new transactions, saving you the time of manually creating them. This is yet another reason Zoho is ideal for business owners who prioritize automation.

Implementation and Onboarding

We like that Zoho Books offers two ways to test-drive its services. On the vendor’s website, you can try out a demo that allows you to explore the user interface and features using a fictional company. Then, there’s a 14-day free trial that lets you use the full-featured program with actual business data. If you need more time to determine if Zoho is right for you, you can request to extend the free trial once your two weeks are up.

We tested Zoho’s onboarding process and found that adding new users is extremely easy. Within minutes of visiting Zoho’s site, you can set up a new user account. You can also call the provider’s sales number or contact the company via email for personalized setup advice. Zoho maintains offices worldwide, so your time zone is unlikely to be an issue.

Customer Service

While some software vendors provide only minimal customer service, we were impressed that Zoho Books offers its paying customers multiple interactive support resources. You can contact the company by phone 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday — a rare perk in this sector. Users can also chat with an agent or email the vendor either within the accounting software or via the company’s website. On user-generated review site Trustpilot, Zoho maintains a score of 4.4 out of 5 for customer service, which is higher than the ratings for both QuickBooks and Xero.

Online help resources include FAQs and a searchable knowledge base. In-house coders are also available to help less-tech-savvy business owners make the most of Zoho’s automation abilities. Note that the free version of the software includes only email-based customer support.

Limitations

While Zoho Books has excellent accounting features and automation abilities, we found a few drawbacks.

  • Monthly transaction cap: One significant downside is the cap on monthly transactions. Paying users are limited to 5,000 transactions monthly, even on the highest plan. Although many service-based small businesses probably won’t exceed this limit, it’s something those with very high transaction volumes should keep in mind.
  • Multiple subscriptions for multiple businesses: People who run multiple businesses should also know that although you can have multiple companies under a single account, each business requires a separate subscription. Keep this in mind when you estimate total costs against your budget.
  • Fee for additional users: Zoho supports only three users on its Standard plan, 10 on the Elite plan and 25 on the Ultimate plan. After that, you must pay an extra monthly fee for each additional user. That can add up if you need a lot of users. Some other accounting software packages from rival companies include unlimited users.
  • Fewer integrations than competitors offer: Compared with competitors such as QuickBooks and Xero, Zoho has relatively few integrations with third-party apps.
  • No payroll services: Unlike competitors such as Xero, Zoho doesn’t offer payroll services. This is disappointing considering that payroll and accounting are connected.
  • Small accounts payable network: Zoho also lacks the comprehensive vendor network that would make it an effective player in the accounts payable space. Processing accounts payable is a vital part of running a business, so small business owners may want to consider additional software that supplements Zoho’s capabilities. Melio is a free tool that provides better bill management capabilities than Zoho does, and QuickBooks also includes accounts payable features.

Methodology

We studied dozens of the best accounting and invoicing software solutions to help small businesses choose the right accounting software for their needs. During our hands-on testing and independent research, we evaluated features such as payment and invoicing capabilities, integrations, mobile apps, report generation, supported user count and customizability. We also considered pricing, the availability of free trials and customer service.

We relied on vendor websites and software demos when conducting our analysis. We also examined user reviews to get independent opinions on the highlights and drawbacks of each product. When determining the best accounting software for business owners looking for automation features, we focused on the number of processes that could be automated via built-in tools and the ability to create custom tools. You can read more about our editorial process here .

What is Zoho Books used for?

Is zoho books free, how many businesses use zoho books, bottom line.

We recommend Zoho Books for …

  • Business owners who wish to automate many tedious invoicing and accounting tasks.
  • Microbusinesses that are small enough to take advantage of Zoho’s free version.

We don’t recommend Zoho Books for …

  • Less-tech-savvy business owners who want a more user-friendly, intuitive product with fewer bells and whistles.
  • High-volume businesses with more than 5,000 transactions per year.
  • Companies that require many integrations with third-party apps.

Zoho Books Review: Features, pricing, and more

Key features:

Zoho Books’ incredibly comprehensive accounting software is a fantastic choice for small and midsize businesses that want as many accounting features as possible. While setting up its automations can be confusing for first-time accounting software users, Zoho’s streamlined, automated workflows can save valuable time and eliminate redundancies. Plus, Zoho Books is also completely free for businesses with an annual revenue below $50K USD.

Crucially, though, lower-tier Zoho Books plans lack built-in time tracking and project tracking (though users can add a free Zoho Invoice plan to access those features). Zoho Books also syncs with fewer third-party apps than top small-business accounting software companies like Xero — though Zoho Books’ seamless integration with the comprehensive Zoho suite of products should appeal to anyone who loves Zoho’s interface, features and automations.

Recurring customizable invoices

Zoho Books' customizable invoices can be configured with details like your company's terms and conditions and your preferred online payment method.

Zoho Books’ customizable invoices contain more fields than other comparable invoicing software. For instance, with Zoho Books’ invoices, you can include your business’s personalized terms and conditions, notes for customers, business salesperson or point of contact, shipping charges and up to 10 relevant documents.

The comprehensive fields might make Zoho Books’ invoices seem more complex upfront for first-time business owners who have previously used free invoicing templates with basic details. But Zoho’s level of detail makes its invoices both more complex and potentially more useful than streamlined, freelance-focused invoices from competitors like FreshBooks.

Zoho also has a separate, completely free invoicing product, Zoho Invoice , that integrates with Zoho Books. Zoho Invoice adds crucial features like time tracking and project tracking, plus more payment and billing features.

Cash flow tracking

The Zoho Books Premium plan and upward includes cash flow forecasting for the upcoming fiscal year plus access to the previous year's cash flow data.

Zoho Books doesn’t include cash flow tracking with its free plan or two cheapest paid plans. However, Zoho Books Premium, Elite and Ultimate users can see a quick overview of the business’s cash flow directly from their dashboard.

Accountant access

Zoho Books users or their accountants can configure a chart of accounts, manually add journal entries and customize sub-accounts.

All Zoho Books’ plans, including its free plan for microbusinesses, include accountant access. (Most accounting software does the same, though FreshBooks’ cheapest plan is a notable exception that doesn’t include accountant access.) Accountant-friendly features like budgeting, bulk transaction updates and chart of account access are easy to find from the dashboard sidebar.

Timesheet management

Zoho Books Premium users and upward can access built-in time tracking and generate timesheets that easily sync with invoices.

Zoho Premium users can track time straight from their Zoho Books dashboard. They can also install Zoho’s time-tracking app, Timer, or use the Timer browser extension. Users of lower-tier plans, including Zoho’s free accounting plan, can’t track time or manage timesheets directly within Zoho Books. However, they can add Zoho Invoice, which is free for most clients and includes project tracking and time tracking.

Online payment acceptance

Some accounting software providers limit you to acceptance payments via Stripe or PayPal only. In contrast, Zoho Books integrates with more than 10 third-party payment gateways, such as Stripe, PayPal, Square, Braintree, Worldpay, Payments Pro, WePay and more.

Payroll integration

For now, at least, Zoho Books’ only payroll integration is with Zoho Payroll, a relatively new product for U.S.-based businesses. As of July 27, 2023, Zoho Payroll is available only for businesses in 12 states, which means Zoho Books isn’t the most flexible choice for multi-state businesses that want to incorporate accounting with payroll.

If you love Zoho Books enough to overlook its limited payroll add-ons, make sure to choose a payroll provider with general ledger exports so you can easily sync your accounting and payroll data.

Additional users

Each Zoho Books plan includes a certain number of users with the base price (including accountant access). For instance, Zoho’s most expensive accounting plan for enterprises, Zoho Books Ultimate, includes 15 users.

However, businesses can choose to add more users for $2.50 per person per month. Only Xero and Wave Accounting, which include unlimited users with every plan, can compete with that price: FreshBooks charges $11 per additional user per month while QuickBooks Online limits user numbers by plan and maxes out at 25.

  • 14-day free trial with every plan (not applicable to the free plan).
  • Six plans for maximum scalability.
  • Accountant access with every plan.
  • Unlimited users with each plan ($2.50 per month per user).
  • Free Zoho Books webinars every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • 24/5 customer service with live chat available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • No cash flow forecasting with free plan or with two cheapest paid plans.
  • Timesheet management not available with free plan or cheapest paid plan.
  • Automations and setup can be complex for first-time accounting software users.

QuickBooks Online

The QuickBooks logo.

Starting price: $30 per month.

QuickBooks Online, Intuit’s popular cloud-based accounting software, is among the only accounting software companies whose base plan can compete with Zoho Books’ in terms of sheer features.

QuickBooks Online’s cheapest plan costs $30 per month, which is one of the highest starting prices of any small-business accounting software. For that price, though, users get some crucial bookkeeping and accounting features Zoho Books doesn’t include with its lower-tier plans:

  • Built-in time tracking.
  • Receipt capture and upload via the QuickBooks Online app.
  • Basic cash flow tracking.
  • Payroll integration with QuickBooks Online Payroll.

Our QuickBooks Online review has more information on QuickBooks’ features, plans, pros and cons.

Xero logo.

Starting price: $13 per month.

Zoho Books’ free plan aside, Xero has the lowest starting price of any provider on our list. Its freelance-friendly starter plan, Xero Early has a few crucial limitations. For instance, it limits users to sending just 20 invoices each month and entering just five bills per month.

But Xero’s accounting software has some stand-out features for product-based business owners (such as Etsy and eBay sellers) at a lower price than either QuickBooks Online or Zoho Books:

  • Built-in inventory tracking.
  • Cash flow forecasting.
  • Bill and receipt capture via Hubdoc.
  • Payroll integration with Gusto (among others).

Our Xero review has more information on Xero’s features, plans, pros and cons.

FreshBooks logo.

Starting price: $19 per month.

More so than Zoho Books, Xero or even QuickBooks, FreshBooks focuses on providing exceptional invoicing and billing software. Like Zoho Books, FreshBooks’ starting plan includes automated recurring invoicing and automatic late payment reminders. Unlike Zoho Books, though, FreshBooks’ invoices include crucial freelance features:

  • Automatic scheduled late fees.
  • Deposit acceptance.
  • Project-based time tracking with invoice integration.
  • Project-based budget and billing management.
  • Payroll integration with Gusto.

Our FreshBooks review has more information on FreshBooks’ features, plans, pros and cons.

To research and write our Zoho Books review, we thoroughly reviewed Zoho’s plan and pricing information, viewed how-to videos and tried the software ourselves using Zoho Books’ 14-day free trial. We also read verified user reviews on the App Store, Google Play, Gartner Peer Insights, Trustpilot and other aggregate rating sites.

To calculate our star rating for Zoho Books, we relied on an internal algorithm that scores accounting software in the following categories:

  • Pricing (weighted to 25%).
  • Accounting features (weighted to 35%).
  • Ease of use (weighted to 15%).
  • Customer service (weighted to 15%).
  • Our expert’s hands-on experience (weighted to 10%).

Bottom Line

While it’s already been established that both software are suited for small and medium-sized businesses, we’ve been able to see that Zoho Books is an excellent choice for small businesses and freelancers who need simple, easy-to-use accounting and invoicing software. It works for small businesses or individuals with limited budgets that don’t need many features or integrations but still need to get some accounting done. It’s also an excellent choice for people who have less than ten employees and only want basic accounting functionality.

QuickBooks is a better choice for businesses that want to focus on their core accounting needs, and everything they’ll need to manage their books. It has more functionality than Zoho Books and many more features, but it’s not free like Zoho Books.

Product is ok but customer service is pathetic

The customer service is pathetic, we are running a CA firm and have almost 20 Zoho books subscription and login and one of the login as was asking an OTP we were not getting because the [sensitive content hidden] is travelling and OTP is going to only mobile number not to email hence raised the ticket and the team keep saying that the accounts team is working but we did not receive any resolution they wasted a whole day and did not resolve this. the ticket ID is [sensitive content hidden].

Zoho Books - Baac Office

It's much better than QuickBooks Online and much less costly as part of Zoho One

Can't think of many cons, as it works so well

Book keeping done wright

Comments: I really like Zoho Books, the design is nice and intuitive. I learned to use it very fast. Support was great when needed.

Zoho Books is an exceptional accounting service, it offers a free version for small business but paid version too. Works great with bank reconciliation and is packed of good features that you found only on expensive software. Getting reports like P&L is easy and the reports looks good. Integrates good with other Zoho apps if you are using them.

No cons for Zoho Books, the software works good.

Zoho Response

Hello Andrei. Thanks for your detailed review about us. We are glad you are enjoying using Zoho Books.

User friendly

The app is so easy to use, it's simple and takes the stress out of book work.

There are no cons for my business needs, I love the app.

Zoho Books: An Online Accounting Solution that Meets Our Needs

I like the exceptional features of Zoho Books. Zoho Books meets our needs because it has been a reliable online accounting software.

Zoho Books is reliable and flawless. I do not dislike Zoho Books at all.

Basic Invoicing and Overview tool

It is basic and does not have too many features. It is included in the overall Zoho system.

Templates are limited and creating invoices in various languages is problematic to setup.

A Smooth Business Accounting Software

It handles payment processing well and has tons of business accounting features.

No particular flaws with Zoho Books. Has been amazing.

Zoho Books Review

- Good mobile app which is fast - Good logo which is attractive - Efficiency and quality

- Extra charge for turning uploaded documents into transaction.

All the functionality of quickbooks - and more - at a much better price.

Comments: Zoho Books has everything I need to keep my books in order, bill my clients, and track my time and expenditures. I've been very happy with this product.

Zoho Books does everything that QuickBooks does in a much more intuitive interface. It provides a ton of flexibility in looking at things from both accrual and cash methods, offers a free seat for my accountant, and allows me to track my time and bring it directly into my invoices. The ability to take pics of receipts and enter expenses directly from my phone app is great, too.

I wish that other software providers would wake up and realize that QB isn't the only game in town. Make it easier to integrate with Zoho, please! I've had some trouble syncing with my bank in the past and it took a while for customer service to understand what was really going on - there are some language barriers. But their CS agents do seem to try to help.

QuickBooks Enterprise logo

QuickBooks Enterprise

Great product for those who know accounting.

Comments: My overall experience with Zoho Book was positive. I switched from Zoho Books to Bill4Time because I wanted a program that would keep track of time and expenses for hourly clients, track contingency fee clients, provide trust accounting, and generate invoices. Zoho Books would be able to do all of those tasks with the exception of contingency fee tracking. There was no easy way in Zoho to keep track of projects that were not hourly, flat, or on a set budget. That said, the Zoho family of products are solid, so if you have need for an accounting product and you are familiar with accounting software, this product would be a great choice.

I liked best the many features that Zoho Books provides. In terms of accounting software, this product does just about everything. I also liked being part of the Zoho suite of products, all of which are quite good. The product is stable, and the company offers solid tech support.

I purchased Zoho Books to use in my small business after using Zoho Invoice. I wanted a product that would do more than just invoice clients, such as track projects and accounting. However, I am not an accountant. The thing I liked least about Zoho Books is that, if you are not familiar with accounting, the product may seem unnecessarily complicated. There is definitely a learning curve with this product that I have not experienced with other Zoho products.

FreshBooks logo

Great QuickBooks competitor with additional features to boot

I am a big fan of Zoho Books. For the same price of a QuickBooks subscription, I was able to purchase a license to Zoho One, which comes with dozens of other valuable apps (Zoho Forms, Zoho CRM, Zoho Survey, Zoho Social, Zoho Marketing Automation, Zoho Analytics, Zoho Sign, Zoho Meeting, Zoho Desk, Zoho Projects, Zoho Expenses, Zoho Recruit, Zoho Flow). I did the math recently, and figured out that if I were to buy each of the Zoho applications I use from an equivalent competitor, I would be spending $600 more than the cost of a Zoho One subscription each month. For Zoho Books in particular, it has all of the features I used in QuickBooks, plus easy-to-use workflow automations and integrations with the rest of the Zoho One suite. It's very helpful to be able to cross-reference Zoho Books data within their CRM for example. Overall, I highly recommend Zoho Books, but encourage you to purchase the full Zoho One suite rather than Books as a standalone application.

I wish they had a few more payment processors available.

Kashoo logo

Good Billing Application

Comments: It was awesome to use Zoho books, it improved our operational efficiency and was very easy to use.

This is an efficient and affordable billing application. Serves all the basic needs and is capable of handling large data sets.

Customer or Product Support seriously needs to improve. Every customer needs a modification as per their business requirements and Zoho shall cater those changes actively.

RUN do not walk way from this product!

Comments: I would rather deal with the IRS, Comcast and AT&T all at once than this company.

Zoho has been a constant and ongoing headache since switching 3 years ago. Since then it has been an ongoing everyday headache. Support simply does not exist with this company. Support articles are 10 years old and do reflect the current software.

Support! This company DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT. Whoever answers chats simply wastes your times and never ever helps.

Zoho Books reconciles bank statement automatically and GST filing is way better than anything else.

Comments: Overall, it's a boon, If you are in India then this is the takeaway software as it helps ease in filing GST reports.

This software when I started using I thought I made a wrong choice but as in when I started managing my accounts & Books for my business, It became my friend, an accountant indeed it did everything that an accountant would do with very little accounting knowledge. The best part is if you are a startup company and you do not have strict compliances then this is for you, you don't have to hire an accountant and DIY. :)

Support is the only part which sometimes made me upset as the Employees were not uniformly assisting as if they were not trained on customer service. The worse thing is they just have support for technical help and no bookkeeping support.

QuickBooks Time logo

QuickBooks Time

Good online accounting software.

Comments: Simple software, can do the accounting with less accounting knowledge, its able access from any were in online.

ZOHO has many other apps implementation and its able to customize according to our requirement.

Reporting format of Balance sheet and Profit loss in excel need to improve.

We Use Zoho Books for Multiple Companies

Comments: ZOHO books has been a great tool for many of our companies. It is great for companies with project management, from estimate to sales order to purchase orders and Invoicing. ZOHO provides live reporting as your team takes the order through the sales process. Customization for our specific business was a huge game changer, as we didn't need to get outside help involved to make simple changes that made our work flow process better. It saves time and errors.

The live dashboard and analytics has provided great insight into our business profitability. The ability to have our project management and accounting systems tied into one saves on time and human error. The automation, workflows and custom fields are a game changer and allow any kind of person to be able to tailor the system to your needs. Whenever I am not able to code something myself, I send a request to the customer service team, and they are usually able to write the scripts for me. The ability to tie into Avalara and not have to worry about taxation is also a huge bonus.

I wish the Purchase Orders for drop ship customers were more obviously tied to the Sales Orders. There are ways to identify which POs belong to which SOs, but seems to be a little more complicated than it could be. I also wish there was a way to see how much we have invoiced against Customer POs. I also wish we could integrate our payroll with ZOHO, as ZOHO payroll isn't currently offered in Michigan. As a result we are having to do more manual entry for employee hours and journal entries for the payroll.

Over 50, not an accountant & never aspired to own a small business...

Comments: It's true, but when your calling is a clear one, you are obligated to follow! Our small care giving business has employees working exclusively at customer sites. The caregivers (most also over 50 yrs. old) input their time, mileage & expenses from their smart phones. Invoicing is generally done at my laptop but can be done from my phone. The invoicing can be personalized with valuable information for our clients such as upcoming holidays, rate changes, & thank yous for allowing us to earn their business. The reporting is simple to use as is the customer support. The customer support is very knowledgeable & easy to understand. We have never experienced a wait time either. We tried another accounting package our first year of business & found it too cumbersome & not user friendly for those of us with only basic accounting skills. Zoho was recommended by our professional accountant & business advisor. Zoho has greatly simplified our invoicing, reporting, & customer account related tasks, so that we can focus on senior care giving where our gifts are strong. Thanks, Zoho! -R. Ford, Owner of The Merry Marthas, LLC

- Phone based app & laptop s-ware are EZ to use.

Don't quite understand how to customize an invoice, save it & use it for monthly billing. Sometimes, I have to play around with the invoice to get all of the detail needed to print. For example, it is not readily apparent how to display the dates for which each expense is incurred on the invoice. Not having a copy of our company's data stored on our system makes me nervous so we keep paper back ups. Surely there is a better contingency plan of which we could take advantage.

Streamlining Business Operations with Zoho Books: A Game-Changer for Efficient Invoicing and Contact

Prior to joining this company, we relied on self-coded solutions for various tasks, including invoice generation and template design, all within our own database. This approach required significant time and effort whenever we needed to introduce new features or implement controls, even though similar solutions already existed in the market at a reasonable price.Transitioning to Zoho Books:We made the decision to switch to Zoho Books, and the entire process was incredibly smooth. I simply created an account, configured our company details, and utilized the standard invoice template, making minor adjustments to resemble our previous format.Contact Management:Importing our contacts into Zoho Books was a breeze and took approximately 10 minutes. I downloaded an Excel file from our database and effortlessly imported all the necessary information.Invoicing:Creating new invoices proved to be just as simple as managing contacts. By uploading an Excel file, the system automatically matched the invoices with the appropriate contacts (if desired). You can even save them as drafts for further review, and once ready, send them out in bulk.

Initially, when we first started using Zoho Books, there was no feature available to automatically create contacts if they didn't already exist while uploading new invoices. However, I'm pleased to say that this has since been improved, and it now works flawlessly for us!

Go-To Invoicing Software Everyone Should Have

Comments: We are a company that's 10 years in the industry. We cater a thousand orders a month and getting an invoicing software that's basically gonna do the job is essential. We've been to a couple of invoicing software but none of those were good enough to bring with us on our road to success. The last software we've got literally ruined our business for a couple of months that we decided to give it up until I found Zoho books. I have heard much of Zoho from my virtual assistant colleagues and their employers have been using them for a while. I decided to sign up for a free trial and loved it! It does almost everything that we need in an invoicing software. Its payment reminders allow us to optimize our collections every month and it keeps going. Its ability to track overdue invoices, customizing templates, and custom fields were a tremendous help in making sure our documents are as accurate as we need them to be. Customer service is also a big help. Someone always answers the phone on their end, emails are being replied in a timely manner and call backs are done in less than 24 hrs. All these for $24 a month which is kind of awesome. We are probably going to stick with Zoho for a while and we are just even starting. Reports are also pretty detailed and is a big help for us to track our progress. On the other side of the coin, I hope they also have an API integrated in their system. Makes it easier for our vendors. I recommend it to small to large scale business who are looking to integrate their accounting and invoicing (probably their inventory as well with Zoho Inventory on the way). Zoho Books is for you.

Pros: 1. Reports. We needed to track our progress down every week and what better way it is than to view our reports. Zoho allows you to get a report for Sales Person, Items and Customer. It's detailed report on overdue invoices are great for us to pound the ones that need to pay. 2. Payment Reminders. Our invoices are always set in an open account. Therefore, we need an automated system to remind our customers about their due invoices. Works great for our collection! 3. Customer Service. They are always good at getting back to you. When no one is available to answer your call, tehy are going to call you back in less than 24 hrs. Their email support is also pretty quick they wont leave you hanging.

Zoho is good about getting a constructive suggestion done. However, I wish they have an API integration with the system. Also with the Zoho Inventory along hte way, Im pretty sure they will be a perfect go-to software for our company.

If you have Zoho CRM This product is a must

This product Hooks up easily to Zoho CRM. The product works almost fluidly with the CRM. it makes it easy to see each client payment and how much we have received each month. The information the books hold really helps for some financial reports. The Reports do make my life easier kindof. Books make it easy to bill clients and it keeps all the information in one place.

The Reports as mention in my pros are missing some really good information that is already there in the system. They want me to pay for Zoho reports, but to my understanding Zoho reports, I would still need to go in and set it up. In our business every month we have to pay out our salespeople. fist I'm not able to split commissions easily or add multiple salespeople to an invoice. second, if I look up sales by salesperson by month it gives me all invoices created in the month, not all invoice paid. We sell expensive web projects and could take months to close. so it is unhelpful for me to see monthly sales report because it is not correct. they also have a "payments received" a report that comes in Zoho books. This report gives me monthly sales but does not add the sales person to the report. So I build a report that takes 30 min to an hour top. I have asked them to fix this and they told me to get Zoho reports

Comments: Overall I liked the experience since we deal in both retail & software industry in one account itself.

The ease of using the zoho books across all the device since the data is stored in server rather than tally in which the data is stored locally in the system.

Nothing to complain as such, but you can say demo or training is necessary extensively to use the application in more productive way.

for a 1 man shop, it's a nice, inexpensive alternative

Comments: in the ~2 years i've been using the software, i've seen dramatic improvements over all (it felt very "beta" when i started, it now feels much more robust).

cost and the ability to build your own integration tools. compared to other options (unnamed here, but you know who they are), it is VERY cost efficient and effective. depending on options chosen with alternatives it costs anywhere from 25% to 75% of what The Other Guys offer. i've even been able to write some integrations with it (using some powerful and reasonably well documented REST APIs)

the interface is a bit clunky - things like matching take a bit of getting used to. banking integration only allows one sync per 24 hour period.

All in One Accounting Solution for SME businesses

A true CRM tool for sales people with the tools the ability to give accountants information needed. You can provide invoicing and estimates for clients as well as get an overview of sales for the year, the month and other important information. We have been using Zoho for over 5 years and almost swear by it, especially in our line of business with integration with payment options, we can accept multiple payment options from clients without changing our workflow. Whether used on its own or used with the other suite of Zoho apps, Zoho Books is definitely a recommended tool for anyone starting out and looking for an affordable accounting/CRM solution.

Only administrators can adjust invoices once they have been sent which limits functionality for larger sales teams. Cancelling an estimate or invoice even when in draft mode is not as straightforward as when you create one. Mobile apps for Zoho Books is not as easy to use as the web app, if you are running a business, it is good for viewing sales at a glance but it is not ideal for CRM on the go. There is a slight learning curve to use Zoho Books for accounts especially if you are coming from another accounting suite.
