Book Reviews
In 1946 pioneering Mennonite businesswoman Edna Ruth Byler met women in the La Plata Valley who were struggling to feed their children. She began selling the beautiful needlework they made to friends in the US, sending the profits back to the sewing group in Puerto Rico. In 1962 her project was adopted by the MCC as the Overseas Needlework and Crafts Project. Led by visionary Lois Kreider, members of Bluffton First Mennonite opened the first Fair Trade storefront in the country in 1974, and called it Self Help Crafts. They began a thrift store called Etcetera to raise money to buy the inventory. It was renamed Ten Thousand Villages in 1996 and now sells products from 30 countries worldwide, empowering workers to raise their standard of living, feed their families, and pursue an education. In 2024 we will celebrate 50 years of Etcetera, Inc. with events throughout the year.

It brings together more than a dozen writers whose own Bluffton experiences deserve retelling.

• Ron Geiser
• Jeff Gundy
• Brendon Matthews
• Ruth Bundy Naylor
• Joanne Niswander

The book also includes a section on Bluffton in the 1950s written by Rudi Steiner, now of Homewood, Illinois. That section includes the account of a Bluffton legend: “Did Elvis stop in Bluffton between his Toledo and Troy performances on Saturday, Nov. 24, 1956?”

The Bluffton We Never Knew
Photographs from our
first half century
1861-1911 – includes nearly 175 photos
The photographic work of Bluffton pioneer photographer Will A. Triplett comes alive in this photo history collection.
It includes Bluffton scenes, people, businesses, churches, Main Street, the college, railroads, early vehicles and residences from Bluffton, and 18 Bluffton school class photos taken before 1901.
The book has many photos that few residents today have ever seen and placing these in one collection reveals a very interest story of the early growth the village of Bluffton.
Former Bluffton resident and Bluffton College faculty member, Von Hardesty, retired from the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., contributed the Foreword.
Tomm Triplett, who grew up in Bluffton and now lives in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, wrote the Preface. He is a great-grandson of Will Triplett.
Each of the photos include a description of the Bluffton scene portrayed. When possible persons in the photos are also identified. Many residents will find their grandparents and great-grandparents in the collection.
Many of the photos are reproduced directly from Will Triplett’s glass negatives. He was a Bluffton photographer for 53 years, working from 1881 to 1934.
Chapter titles in the book include:
• Main Street –
businesses and buildings on Main Street
• Churches
• Our neighbors –
photos of village residents
• Where we lived –
photos of early Bluffton houses
• The Riley and our quarries
• The old school – 18 class photographs
• A college town
• Going places – horse & wagons, automobiles, railroads &interurbans
• One Bluffton family – some photos of the author’s Bluffton ancestors
A Good Place To Miss
Bluffton stories 1900-1975
Released as part of Bluffton’s sesquicentennial, the book includes Bluffton stories from each decade from 1900 to 1975. Several persons with Bluffton connections have contributed stories.
They include: Jim “Spike” Berry Richard Boehr Sam Diller Charles Hilty Richard Jordan Mary Pannabecker Steiner Darvin Luginbuhl Robert Kreider and others.
In addition, in offers many other shorter stories related to Bluffton during this 75-year period. Rudi Steiner contributed the book’s introduction and explanation of the book’s title.
“Think if it as a collection of stories that for whatever reason were cut from the official histories of Bluffton,” said Fred Steiner. “The stories in this collection are too good to miss.”
In addition, the book lists every Bluffton High School graduate by class from 1881 to 1930, which represents the first 50 years of graduates.

Bluffton oral history
We can thank Public Enemy Number 1, John Dillinger, for Bluffton’s 20th century 15-minutes-of-fame. His brief visit in August of 1933 places us forever in the Dillinger legend.
Because of my own interest in his visit, as a journalist I’ve made a special point to seek out persons with John Dillinger stories. This is the first attempt to gather these stories into one collection. There are many stories and I continue to collect them, now hearing them from second- generation sources.
The stories in this collection are those I believe to be genuine, or very close to it. You will see a few notes stating some situations shared may not have occurred the way they are told. In most instances, the storyteller also admits that fact.

“REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES” BY SHELBY VAN PELT
This first novel might have been just another story about love and loss, with a spare list of ordinary characters with the usual quirkiness that carries a plot along. But, instead, plan to be charmed by the most unusual of - shall we say - heroes? Marcellus, an aging giant Pacific octopus tops the chart as this book's most surprising (and astute) character who will wrap you in his tentacles and make the ensuing story a delight. It's a great read.

“THE GIRL WHO COULD BREATHE UNDER WATER” BY ERIN BARTELS
If you like water, and summer on the beach, and a mystery death and lots of soul-searching, you'll find plenty of it in this novel. To me, it was a bit more soul-searching than necessary. The book could have been at least 100 pages shorter if our heroine could have had some deep counseling back when she was a teenager. But that's a good part of what our author is trying to tell the reader - don't let trauma simmer for years before trying to understand and get help.
“AN IMMENSE WORLD” BY ED YOUNG
This book contains all you ever wanted to know about the extra-special senses that animals use every day of their lives. You'll be amazed at all the variations in sensory abilities that live in the tiniest of ants to the largest of elephants - and all the creatures in between. We humans may think we're the top in everything - but that's far from true. Don't try to read this thick book all in one sitting, there's too much there. But savor each chapter as it opens your world to the vast animal world of wonders.
“LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY” BY BONNIE GARMUS
Chemistry was never my favorite subject, but this novel had me smiling all the way through. Because, even though the story line is all about chemistry and chemists, it's a humorous and imaginative (but still believable) tale taking place 60-some years ago when women in science were almost unheard-of and certainly had no future for recognition of their talents. Congratulations to our author who has created delightfully original characters who make the story sing.
“JACKIE & ME” BY LOUIS BAYARD
For those of us who have lived through the Kennedy years, this book will bring back memories. For those who have only heard of the Kennedy family, this book may fill in a few more of the blanks. It is a novel, so know that not all things will necessarily be true. But enough of the Kennedy family history will certify that our narrator was a good friend and right-hand man of Jack, as well as a good friend to Jacqueline Bouvier. This tale sees Jack and Jackie through a strange courtship and their inevitable marriage.
“THE MIDCOAST” BY ADAM WHITE
This is a different sort of mystery that eases its way into being. Placed in and around a small town in coastal Maine (there truly IS a Damariscotta, and if you've been there you know that the surrounding towns mentioned are there as well). Although we learn early-on that something bad happened, the murder part of the mystery finally creeps into being slowly - after the story's characters are well established as typical Maine coast citizens. So expect the unexpected which, of course, is all part of the mystery.
“SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL HAPPENED” BY YVETTE MANESSIS CORPORON
This is a true story of "Survival and Courage in the Face of Evil," as the book's cover tells us, spanning the years from World War II to the present. Its scope comes not from central Europe but from one of the tiniest of Greek islands and leads to America's Midwest. Our author, born into a Greek Orthodox community, unwinds a labyrinth of discoveries that expands her family history, her long list of friends, and her growing community of faith. Extremely personalized - a bit much to my taste.
“CARVED IN STONE” BY ELIZABETH CAMDEN
I hesitate to not recommend a book, as I realize that my reading tastes may not be the same as yours. And my feelings for this one have nothing to do with too much mayhem or too much sex or too short or too long. It's mainly that the plot (centered around the Carnegies of New York), mixed with the necessary romantic story line, seems too unreal, with the disparate characters meeting in contrived situations. So be forewarned. And, if you don't agree with me, that's OK, too.
“THE IMPOSSIBLE THINGS” BY SALMA EL-WARDANY
This review was a hard one for me to tackle, as was the reading of this book. The basic reason, I believe, is that this is a contemporary book about contemporary life with three young Muslim women in London. And I am a Christian woman born way too many years ago into a completely different sociological milieu. But the basic story itself, and the author's masterful way of writing, make it an important one in today's literature. It's a modern-day treatise on family and faith, all under the complications of tradition.

Bluffton ghost stories published by icon founder.
Does Bluffton ooze ghosts? You can soon find out.
Just in time for Halloween, Where Bluffton’s Ghosts Sleep, the latest book by author--and Icon founder--Fred Steiner, will be available at a book signing from 10 :00-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center, 132 N. Main St.
Subtitled “Unexpected stories from a small Ohio town,” the 196-page book includes what Steiner says is “every unexpected and cryptic Bluffton epic ever imagined.”
“You will meet ghosts from Maple Grove Cemetery, Harmon Field, Bluffton University, Riley Creek, the Swiss Settlement, from Ada and area ghost towns,” said the author.
“You’ll also discover some very interesting characters including Hezekiah Bloomfield Hubbell whose Shifferly Road tombstone was once the spookiest place in Allen, Hancock and Hardin counties.”
The book contains nine chapters retelling Bluffton stories across the time frame. The earliest involve native Americans who were exiled from Allen County in the 1840s. Stories follow that era covering many decades all the way to the present, involving the Bluffton Middle School ghost.
Among stores in the unexpected category include:
- An 1860s woman’s fear of being buried alive – it almost happened
- Five bodies buried in the same grave during a typhoid epidemic
- A UFO spotted 24 years before Roswell
- A Sunday Bluffton church service attended by members of the KKK
- Description of a Bluffton location where hoofed animals regularly went to die
- 300-plus bodies uncovered in a native American burial mound, not far from Bluffton
Steiner says that after reading this book, you may never wade in Riley Creek or the Buckeye, after discovering tales emerging from those bodies of water.
The book will soon be available in several Bluffton businesses including the Senior Center and from the author.
The following PowerPoint presentations, open to the public, featuring stories from the book take place in October:
• Thursday, Oct. 5, noon – Hancock County Historical Museum, Findlay
• Tuesday, Oct. 17, 6 p.m. – Bluffton Public Library
• Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2:30 p.m. – Bluffton Senior Citizens Center

Absolutely the best Vietnamese restaurant around. Coming from up north where there many Vietnamese options, VN Pho definitely ranks in our Top 10. Their Pho is amazing. The ingredients are fresh and the broth is 5 stars. So much flavor. Some of the best broth we've had. We visit at least once a week. The service is great! Can not recommend this restaurant enough.
Food was okay but the owner was rude. I ordered chicken noodles soup but the noodles was hard like they were undercooked. I asked him if he could make it softer, he went to the kitchen and kept cursing and speaking in Vietnamese, I understood everything he said in there. I will never come back.
Outstanding quality of food, awesome flavors, fast service, friendly staff, generous portions, definitely a great restaurant and we will come here again.
Vegetarian Pho
Fried noodle with veggies
Brand new restaurant that opened in the Publix plaza. Immediately greeted and served. However, they still didn't have their beer or wine license which was fine.. we ordered a couple appetizers which came out quickly and each ordered some Pho. The broth was delicious and the service just stayed great the entire time. Would definitely go back.
They try hard but miss the mark. Everything prepared in advance. Everything sweet. Cheap cut of BBQ pork, but tender. Summer rolls should be made just before serving. Broken rice barely ok.
Not a bunch of Vietnamese food in this area, but this place would be top notch in any area. I have had the Pho twice and the egg rolls. Both are superb. The sweet and sour fish sauce accompaniment is excellent. The service is friendly and very attentive, and the place is spotless. It is next to the Publix, first exit past Rose Hills.
Delicious authentic Pho from friendly business owners. Portions are good sized. Quick service. JUST DO IT!
Very flavorful Pho. Excellent service and friendly owners. We would go back again. I would recommend
