How To Write a Cover Letter for a CV (With Examples)
Tips for Writing a Cover Letter for a CV
Proofread before sending, cover letter template, cover letter sample, sending an email cover letter, more cover letter examples.
When you apply for a job with a curriculum vitae (CV), it's important to include a cover letter, also known as a covering letter. This letter allows you to make a favorable first impression, using narrative in your own tone of voice to catch the reader’s attention and encourage them to seriously review your attached CV.
Like a resume, a CV summarizes your skills and experience. The difference between a CV and a resume is length, the focus on credentials, and what the documents are used for. Typically, a CV is required to apply for roles in academia, scientific research, and medical fields.
While your CV provides a detailed—and often lengthy—look at your experience and credentials, the cover letter is an opportunity to call out your most important qualifications and make a compelling case for your candidacy for the role at hand. Here's what you need to know to write a successful curriculum vitae cover letter.
Tailor the Letter to Fit the Organization
The CV cover letter should be tailored to respond to the unique and specific requirements requested by each organization you are approaching.
Do not use the same cover letter for every job you apply to, even though it may seem like a timesaver.
Each letter needs to provide detailed information about why are you are qualified for the specific job in question, and it should outline the reasons for your interest in the company or organization. Being specific is advantageous. Even if you're applying for two similar roles in two different hospitals, the two hospitals may serve different populations or require slightly different responsibilities for people in the role. Your letters to each hospital should reflect that.
Use your cover letter to identify the skills or experiences most specific to the job, rather than copying directly the information in your CV.
What to Include
As a candidate, it's tempting to feel like the cover letter is unnecessary, since it is likely that all the pertinent information is included in your CV. Still, as you can see, the cover letter is a helpful tool in your application. Here's what to keep in mind as you write a cover letter.
Format Matters
The content of your cover letter should be brief and structured. Aim for 3-5 paragraphs in your letter. Start with a salutation. Your letter should address the relevant contact, whose name often appears in the job advertisement. Avoid “Sir” or “Madam” if possible.
If the letter recipient's name isn't provided, try these tips to determine the correct contact person .
Start With an Introduction
Typically, the first paragraph will be an introduction—if you are applying to a job ad, mention it here. Mention the job title, any reference number, and where and when you saw it. The first paragraph is also where you should mention if someone referred you to the position.
The Body of the Cover Letter
The body of the letter—the second and third paragraphs—should highlight your relevant skills and experience. Highlight your transferable skills , achievements, and versatility. Explain what you can contribute and what makes you stand out from your competition. Include mention of your current or last job, qualifications, and professional and academic training, tailoring your information to make it as relevant as possible to the organization or job applied for.
In the body of the cover letter, you can mention personality traits relevant to the role at hand. You can also use this space to call out why you're interested in this specific role, at this specific company. Potential employers and hiring managers will appreciate it if you can show you've read the job ad and researched the company.
Avoid lengthy repetition of information covered in your CV. Unlike a CV, it is acceptable to write a cover letter in the first person.
Conclude the letter by succinctly summarizing why an employer may want to meet and employ you. Include a polite expression of interest in further dialogue with the recruiter. Do mention that you would like the opportunity to discuss your suitability further in a personal interview and that you await a response in due course.
Follow Instructions
In some cases, an advertisement will indicate that a more substantial letter is required.
Always follow specific instructions and include any information if it is specifically requested. For instance, some employers may ask you to include your current salary or your desired salary range.
Make Sure the Letter Reads Well
Ensure that your CV cover letter flows freely. You do not need to precisely match every point on the job description. The reader should be left with an overall impression that you are a potentially valuable addition to the workforce.
The letter should be readable and engaging.
Negative information of any sort should be avoided in your cover letter, as well as on your CV.
You'll want to be sure your letter is free from grammar or spelling errors. It should also be clearly presented—that means using standard formatting, and common readable fonts (such as Times New Roman or Verdana) in an appropriate size.
This is a cover letter example. Download the cover letter template (compatible with Google Docs and Word Online) or see below for more examples.
Depending on the employer's submission requirements, cover letters can be submitted online with your CV, uploaded online, or mailed. Be sure to follow the application instructions and follow the directions on how to apply. Consider this template for how to structure your letter:

Why this CV is effective
Writing a school leaver CV is a big challenge, especially when you have no work experience, but all of the job adverts seem to be asking for experienced people.
Here’s how this candidate overcomes this barrier and creates an attractive CV.
The profile/personal statement
This 16 year old candidate doesn’t have any full time work experience in the field they are hoping to work in, so they use their profile to sell their academic achievements and transferable student skills .
The purpose of the profile (or personal statement) is to catch recruiters’ attention as they skim through all of the CVs in their inbox. This profile contains lots of information around highest level of qualifications, subjects that are relevant to their target roles, and extra-curricular activities
They also clearly mention their desire to enter the finance industry, and demonstrate why they have the necessary skills to succeed in it.
Quick tip: If you struggle with spelling and grammar, try our quick-and-easy CV Builder
The core skills and achievements
The core skills and achievements are in the bullet pointed section under the profile, and as you can see, the points are very short and sharp. This ensures that they can be seen from a quick glimpse of the CV and they gives recruiters a snapshot of this person’s skills.
Good skills and achievements to include are things like:
- Highest qualification level
- Skills relevant to the industry you are targeting
- School teams and clubs
- Positions of responsibility
- Awards and recognition
Education section
As a school leaver, your education is going to be of great interest to employers , so you should include details of your subjects and grades.
You can even include details of any coursework or projects that might be relevant to the jobs you are targeting.
- Work experience
This teenager candidate’s work experience consists of one part time kitchen role which isn’t relevant to the finance roles they are applying for. However, this doesn’t stop them from using the role to their advantage.
Throughout the role description, the candidate showcases lots of transferable workplace skills such as communication , teamwork , and problem solving .
The role is structured for easy navigation by including an outline at the top, followed by bullet pointed responsibilities.
Student CV (no experience )
Top tips for writing a CV with no experience
- Research your target jobs thoroughly to find out exactly what skills and knowledge you need to highlight in your CV
- Draw out transferable workplace skills from your school work, studies, projects and extra-curricular activities to prove that you have valuable skills that employers are looking for
- If you have any hobbies or interests that are relevant or impressive (such as sports teams, writing, club membership, charity work etc.) add them to your CV to give it a boost
- For a quick way to add experience to your CV, pick up a short term voluntary role in your local area
College student CV
University student CV / Graduate
As a graduate , you are competing against lots of other similar candidates to land graduate jobs and internships – so it’s important to get your CV ( curriculum vitae ) right and make it stand out from the pack.
The personal statement / profile
As a graduate, it’s vital to make recruiters stick to your CV when they first open the document. This candidate does that by writing a powerful personal statement which summarises all of the skills they have picked up in university, work placements, and personal projects .
It’s short, sharp and punchy, which makes it an interesting read, and it’s heavily tailored to the needs of the candidate’s target employers, by including plenty of relevant terms and key words .
Core skills and achievements
To give readers a quick snapshot of their most in-demand abilities, this candidate has included a bullet pointed list of some impressive skills and achievements which relate to their target roles.
Related projects
As a graduate with limited experience, it’s wise to highlight some relevant projects that you’ve undertaken from university, school, or personal work. It’s a great way to compensate for a lack of work experience in your field.
This candidate is keen to land a product design role, so they have gone into huge detail around the product design elements of their studies. They have highlighted subjects and modules to give recruiters a deep insight into their technical knowledge.
Whilst this candidate’s work experience is not relevant to the roles he is applying for, he still uses them to demonstrate his ability to work in a team environment and contribute to an employer. Roles are well structured and broken up into easy-to-read segments so that employers can read them quickly and find the info they need.

How to write a student CV
Writing your student CV is a lot easier when you have sample CVs and CV templates , but it’s still important to understand what recruiters want to see in your CV – and the type of information you need to get across.
These tips will help you perfect your student CV and land a junior role or apprenticeship with a good salary and progression opportunities.
- CV structure and format
Student CV structure and format
Firstly, you must structure and format your CV in a fashion that makes it easy to read, and gives it a professional outlook.
This infographic give an overview of how to layout your CV and the sections you need to include.
Formatting tips
- Keep the font simple and clear – don’t be tempted to use fancy fonts that might be tricky to read.
- The colour scheme should be toned down and clear with black text on a white background creating the easiest reading experience.
- Text should be broken up as much as possible to ensure that busy recruiters and hiring managers can digest the information quickly
- Use big bold headings to clearly define sections and break the information up further
Do your research
Before you start writing your CV it’s crucial to find out what your target employers want to see in a candidate.
Without knowing the skills and knowledge that are required for the jobs you are applying for, it will be difficult to know what you should populate your CV with.
I would advise heading over to the job sites and scanning through plenty of adverts to find out what the most important skills in your niche are.
CV personal statement/profile
Your personal statement or profile is an introductory paragraph which sits at the top of your CV, and is designed to give employers a high-level summary of what you can offer them
The personal statement is arguably the most important part of your CV because it is the first part of the CV that a recruiter’s gaze will be drawn to – if it’s weak, they may skip on to the next CV in their inbox.
So, ensure that your personal statement is packed with relevant skills and gives a good overview of your abilities – this way it will persuade recruiters to read the rest of your CV.
What to include in your student CV profile
- Summary of your education – Being a student, your education is going to be of great interest to hiring managers, so add a high-level overview of your education to your profile, focusing on your highest levels of achievement and qualifications that are relevant to your target jobs.
- In-demand skills – To ensure that your CV gets noticed by recruiters, you need to pack your profile with skills that are important to the jobs you are applying for. Read the job descriptions of the roles you are applying to and include as many of the essential skills as you can (you could have gained these through studies, work experience or even personal achievements)
- Work experience – As a student you might not have much (or any) work experience, but anything you have done should be included in your profile because recruiters love to see it. This could include school work placements, internships, freelancing or even volunteering.
Your education section
As a student it’s unlikely that you will have a lot of experience to write about, so your education section will provide you with more opportunities to write about your skills and knowledge.
Add your education section near the top of your CV, unless you have some highly relevant work experience that will be more interesting to employers (e.g. a work placement within the industry you are applying to)
Formatting your education section
Your education needs to be easy for recruiters to navigate, so break it down into clear sections for each qualification, using bullet points and bold headings.
Head each entry with;
- Name of qualification and subject (e.g. GCSE in Maths)
- Institution studied at (school, college, university etc.)
- Dates Studied
And for your most recent and relevant qualifications you should expand by adding details on:
- Awards and achievements
This will allow you to provide employers with plenty of detail on the skills and knowledge you picked up, along with the achievements you made.
For older and less relevant qualifications you don’t have to provide as much detail because employers will be less interested. For example, if you have a marketing degree and are applying to marketing roles, it will be important to add lots of information on your marketing degree, but your primary school studies will not be as interesting to readers.
Adding your work experience (paid or unpaid)
As a student, it can be difficult to find experience to place in your CV or resume . – especially if you don’t have any paid work experience.
But the key to adding work experience to your student CV is being creative.
The work experience that you include in your CV doesn’t have to be limited to full-time paid jobs only.
Think outside of the box and include any instances where you have shown initiative outside of your studies, such as:
- Volunteer work – Volunteering for a local or online business in your industry can be a great way to learn relevant skills and add them to your CV.
- School/University work placements – If you have done any work placements within your studies these will give you a great chance to prove your skill set and work ethic.
- Freelancing – Getting freelance work is easier than ever now, thank to sites like Fiverr and PPH. Set up a profile and start offering freelance work, then add some of your projects to your CV.
Writing about these types of activities will give you plenty of opportunities to showcase workplace skills and prove you are a motivated candidate.
How to structure work experience in your CV
Use the structure below to write about your work experience and provide recruiters with a pleasant reading experience, whilst highlighting your skills and achievements.
Hobbies and interests
When you don’t have much work experience, your hobbies and interests can be used to demonstrate lots of workplace skills and qualities.
Add interesting and constructive hobbies that will demonstrate a range of skills and personal traits, like the following

CFPB v. Think Finance, LLC
We are the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal government agency that enforces laws that protect consumers.
In 2017, the CFPB sued Think Finance, LLC and six subsidiaries (collectively, the “Think Finance Entities”). For years, the Think Finance Entities managed three lenders: Mobiloans, Great Plains Lending, and Plain Green Lending. The Bureau’s lawsuit alleged that these businesses deceived people and broke licensing and lending requirements. As a result, their loans in 17 states are considered illegal, void, and uncollectable, according to the Bureau’s lawsuit. The Bureau’s lawsuit also stated that the Think Finance Entities helped two debt collection companies illegally collect loans.

Carolina celebrates the Class of 2024 under the lights
The 6,700-plus Tar Heel graduates received words of wisdom from astronaut Zena Cardman ’10, ’14 (MS) at a ceremony presided over by Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts.
Carolina’s Class of 2024 enjoyed a primetime Spring Commencement under the lights.
The newest Tar Heel alumni were treated to a first-of-its-kind Saturday night ceremony at Kenan Stadium (fireworks included) and heard from astronaut Zena Cardman ’10, ’14 (MS) , who told them in her keynote speech to make their own definitions of success as they began their next chapters.
“Success is yours to define, and your team is yours to build,” said Cardman, who is set to make her first spaceflight in August. Cardman and her team are headed to the International Space Station for a six-month mission.
But beyond accomplishments that can be listed on a resume, Cardman told the graduating class, “You know your values, what brings you joy, what questions make you curious. You know the people who matter to you.”
Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts presided over the ceremony that honored an estimated 4,265 undergraduates, 1,530 master’s degree candidates and 884 doctoral students. Of the graduates, 775 are first-generation students and 524 are Carolina Covenant Scholars .
“The confidence and certainty from your time here, the relationships you’ve built and the skills you’ve gained have prepared you to enter a world full of uncertainty,” Roberts said.

“Our college experience has been out of the ordinary,” said Lauryn Lovett, senior class president, noting that Saturday marked the “first actual graduation ceremony” for many of those in caps and gowns. “We are the COVID class. Despite a pandemic and several other hardships throughout our years, we’ve made it.”
Being trailblazers
In a couple of months, Cardman will get into a 200-foot-tall rocket. Within 75 seconds, she will have traversed over 6,000 miles upward and enter orbit in 10 minutes’ time.
But taking the stage Saturday night, Cardman said, “is the most terrifying thing I’ll do this year.”
If she was terrified, Cardman didn’t show it. She came with jokes — “This will be the first time I leave Kenan Stadium without a sunburn” — and offered a timely reminder on the importance of thanking mothers, including her own in the audience.
She offered several pieces of wisdom these graduates can carry with them. Among the most important was a message on choosing goals wisely and morally, a lesson related to her own patient journey as an astronaut. “If your goal requires cutting down someone else to get there, you need a different goal,” Cardman said.
She told her fellow Tar Heels to be trailblazers — and that it’s OK if they don’t know where that trail is leading.
“Just start walking,” she said. “You don’t actually have to know where you’re going if you know who you’re doing it for, and the most transformative journeys don’t actually need to take you very far at all.”
Sharing Carolina
Although Roberts’ time at the University began in January, Carolina’s interim chancellor said he quickly became impressed by many of the students honored Saturday.
His message to this group was one based on the importance of compromise and sharing, especially at a place like Carolina that “doesn’t belong to any one person or group.”
Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts (Jon Gardiner/UNC-Chapel Hill)
“Being the University of the People is not always easy, especially when the people are not of one mind and they never are. Being the University of the People means that we contain all that is great and all that is troubling about our society,” Roberts said.
As such, he told his audience of new graduates to embrace “shared effort” as they prepare to leave their “Heel print on this world.”
An illuminated celebration
As the night’s ceremony approached its end, a cappella group Clef Hangers performed “Carolina in My Mind,” and graduates were treated to a lightshow during a countdown to their cap and gown toss, which coincided with fireworks.
With that, a new group joined the ranks of Tar Heel alumni and enjoyed a celebration everyone who spoke on Saturday said they deserved.

Local news | preakness 2024 live coverage: as rain lets up, big hats take center stage, local news | congressional black caucus asks biden to pardon marilyn mosby, says she has applied for clemency.
In the letter, the group of 60 lawmakers calls on the president to pardon Mosby, who was convicted at two separate trials of perjury and mortgage fraud.
Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for next week. Prosecutors are seeking 20 months in prison, while Mosby has asked for probation .
The Congressional Black Caucus’s letter argues that the prosecution against Mosby was politically motivated. Borrowing language from a similar letter submitted by civil rights groups including the NAACP, the caucus asked Biden to take “bold action” in Mosby’s case.
“As a nation that leads by example, our justice system must not be weaponized to prevent progress toward a more perfect union,” wrote Rep. Steven Horsford, a Nevada Democrat who chairs the CBC. “We share your desire for racial equity, Mr. President, and this Trump-era prosecution is in direct conflict with a justice system that serves us all.”
Mosby’s pardon application is not yet reflected on the Office of the Pardon Attorney’s website, but the letter from the Congressional Black Caucus links to the document and says it was submitted Wednesday.
In recent weeks, Mosby has gone on a media blitz to call attention to her request for a presidential pardon. She has insisted she did nothing wrong and that the government targeted her because of her high-profile criminal justice reform efforts and her public fights with Republican lawmakers, including former President Donald Trump.
Her pardon application follows the same playbook.
“While pardon applications generally express remorse and regret, what happens when justice was not served and in fact, denied? No such remorse and regret is appropriate in this case,” the application states.
The application also identifies Mosby’s attorney for the pardon process as Jeff Trevillion, of Oklahoma City. Trevillion declined to comment when reached by phone Thursday.
Mosby’s lawyer in the criminal case, Federal Public Defender James Wyda, also declined to comment.
The Congressional Black Caucus did not respond to a request for comment.
Mosby’s prosecution has taken place under the Biden-nominated U.S. Attorney for Maryland, Erek Barron. While the investigation into Mosby started earlier, she wasn’t indicted until January 2022, nearly a year after Biden took office. The judge handling Mosby’s case was also a Biden nominee.
A federal jury found Mosby guilty of perjury at her first trial in November, where prosecutors charged that she lied about suffering a pandemic-related financial loss to pull money out of her retirement account early under the CARES Act, federal legislation intended to ease the economic harm caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Mosby used the money she withdrew, about $80,000 in total, to put down payments on two Florida vacation properties. Prosecutors also alleged that Mosby made a series of false statements when she applied for those mortgages; a second jury convicted Mosby of one count of mortgage fraud in February.
That verdict centered on the government’s claim that Mosby submitted a false “gift letter” when she applied for a mortgage on one of the Florida properties.
The government is asking to seize that property, a condo on Florida’s Gulf Coast, but Mosby asked to keep it Thursday in a new court filing.
Arguing that the condo is Mosby’s “only significant asset,” her lawyer is seeking to block the government’s forfeiture request.
“Ms. Mosby is in financial and professional ruins,” Wyda wrote in another filing.
Keeping the condo would give her a source of rental income as she faces the possible loss of her law license .
The pardon application also claims Mosby is delinquent on all of her credit cards “as a result of a loss of income due to this conviction.” It lists her credit card debt at more than $65,000.
The application also names Mosby’s “present employer” as Mahogany Elite Consulting LLC, one of three companies Mosby established while she was still Baltimore’s top prosecutor. Mosby claimed at her first trial that she suffered a loss when another of the companies, a travel business, never launched because of the pandemic.
Wyda’s response to the government’s forfeiture request also argues that losing the condo would be a disproportionately harsh sentence for Mosby’s crimes. Mosby bought the condo for $476,000 in February 2021, but it is now valued at nearly double that price, according to the filing.
“The Government is seeking forfeiture that would amount to nearly $1,000,000, when the only conduct at issue is a false $5,000 gift letter,” Wyda wrote.
Mosby previously sold the other Florida vacation property, an eight-bedroom house in Kissimmee, near Disney World, for $696,000 in 2021. She paid $545,000 for the home in September 2020.
Mosby could have made more on the house if she had waited longer to sell it, Wyda wrote, but she needed the money amid mounting legal bills. Mosby originally had private attorneys who left the case last year.
The government would sell the condo if it is allowed to seize it, according to an earlier filing . Mosby would get her down payment back if there is a profit from the sale.
In a response to Mosby’s sentencing memo, prosecutors also argued Thursday that Mosby’s continued insistence that she was targeted for a politically motivated prosecution shows “a complete lack of honesty.” The judge handling the case found previously that there had been “no vindictive or selective prosecution,” which Mosby acknowledged in her sentencing memorandum.
“Her media campaign in the days leading up to the sentencing are a blatant attempt to sway public opinion by spreading falsities and to fundraise for her own personal benefit,” the prosecutors wrote in their filing.
A GoFundMe page that asks donors to support “America’s Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby” has raised more than $34,000.
