The Selling 7: How to Make Amazing Employee Bio Videos (+ Examples)

If you were to explain what makes your company different from any of your competitors, there's a good chance you'd say it's your people. Whether you're talking about customer service, quality control, design, or anything else, it's the people doing the work that make your organization unique.

The trouble is, every business is likely to say something similar.

So, if a customer is choosing between 10 different options, and they all say that their people are their biggest differentiator, how can that customer choose?

An employee bio video can actually  show the customer the very people who make your company special.

If the video is done right, it can start to establish trust and lay the groundwork for a relationship.

It can be hard for a potential customer to assess if you’re worth their investment.

You can show them examples of your work, share a case study or two, or talk about an award you won, but even a business that looks perfect on paper might not be the right fit.

As a marketer, it’s your job to build connections with your potential customers so they feel confident before you start working together. Customers want to know that you can achieve what they need you to and you can deliver what you promise.

Employee bio videos are one of the easiest ways to engender this with existing and potential clients.

What are employee bio videos — and why do you need them?

An employee bio video is a quick look into who works at your company. They are a critical component of what we call The Selling 7 — the videos you need to produce to really resonate with your customers.

These videos are usually around two to three minutes and give basic information about each employee to show off their personality and their expertise.

Employee bio videos are very effective at building trust and establishing connection.

Before we go any further, let's check out an example. Here's a bio video for Will Schultz, one of our coaches here at IMPACT:

If the videographer has done the job right, you should come away with a pretty good idea of who Will is and what he does. You might even have started to like him or feel like you know him.

Will Schultz is no longer just a name on a website. Now he's a person. Someone you can trust.

When you watch someone speak on video, talking passionately about their job, you see the human side of the business. You see a smiling face that you can connect with.

Employee bio videos help your potential customers form relationships with your team — which makes them more likely to move forward and do business with you.

So, let's look at how these videos get made.

What does a good employee bio video look like?

These videos can look different based on your business, but I recommend the following:

It should be shot in 'interview style'

A good tip for shooting employee bio videos is to shoot interview style.

Seat the employee in front of the camera and have an interviewer sit next to the camera. Have the employee talk to that person in a conversational tone.

This helps a lot when your employees aren’t comfortable on camera. They can talk to someone instead of a lens.

Notice how Chris is looking slightly off-camera? That's totally fine. He's going to speak more naturally to a person who's there instead of into the camera lens.

It should incorporate 'b-roll'

Make sure you have some b-roll, that is, footage without sound, to put over the main footage. This can take three forms:

  • Second-camera footage from the interview to add a different angle and break things up
  • Footage of the person doing the things they're talking about: working, speaking, designing, etc.
  • Footage of the person's personal life or family.

This will help the video feel fresh and visually interesting.

It also helps the viewer gain a visual of what that employee’s day-to-day looks like. This makes it easier to picture working together.

Lastly, if the employee in the video isn't very comfortable on camera, b-roll can also be helpful for covering up nerves.

It should be short

Keep the employee bio videos short. A video does not need to be long to accomplish its goal. All you need is enough to show your audience you’re personable and trustworthy.

It should stay true to your brand

Sometimes it can feel like there's conflict between trustworthiness and personality. Too heavy in one direction can make the person feel stiff and rigid. Too much the other way can feel too trivial.

Make sure you stay true to your brand identity while still having some fun. You want to be memorable while also showing expertise.

What should employees talk about in their videos?

A videographer scheduling a shoot for an employee bio video should make a list of predetermined questions that they can share with the team. This will help everyone be ready to get the most out of their interview.

There are three main topics to cover in this kind of video:

1. Their role

First, they should explain their role. Titles can be confusing, especially to people outside the organization.

To get the most out of this question, you can ask questions like:

What is your role?

What does your day-to-day look like?

What are the problems you help clients solve?

How long have you been in this position?

These questions establish both the mechanical aspects of the job and establish credibility.

2. Their ideals

The next thing to focus on is their ideals. Why do they do what they do? What makes them care about their work?

Ask questions like these:

What makes you well-suited for this role?

Why do you love your job?

What’s the most fulfilling part?

What do you think the customer experience should be like?

These questions humanize the person, while still focusing on their professional role. This will help the audience relate to the person on their screen.

3. Their life outside of work

And lastly, they should describe their personal life. Expressing your passions and hobbies can help build connections with people you have never even met. For example, you probably still remember the picture of Will with his bike and surfboard.

Examples of great employee bio videos

Now let's look at some examples so you get the idea. Just like the one for Will above, these help you feel like you know the person you're learning about. If the video does its job, you're now more likely to want to work with this person in the future.

Here are some examples of my favorite employee bio videos.

Aquila Commercial

This video puts a face to a field that can seem buttoned up and formal. David is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the work he does for Aquila, a commercial real estate firm in Texas.

JMAK Properties

This one pulls you right in by leading with b-roll, and the video clearly conveys helpfulness and enthusiasm.

The interview-style shooting allows her to be comfortable and conversational.

Make your business more human

It’s hard to develop a human connection online — and buyers are often skeptical of sales pitches and too-good-to-be-true offers. Seeing a face and hearing a voice can help.

Building trust through video is the fastest way to make connections.

Business deals are built on relationships, and relationships need to start somewhere.

Employee bio videos are a helpful tool for building relationships with your prospects and helping them become customers.

How to Shoot Video Biographies

Allen Bronstein, cofounder of MobileMovieMaking, has recently been shooting short video biographies. While these typically capture the lives of older subjects or even people who have died, the form can be used to tell the story of anyone of any age. In the following interview, Allen provides advice that filmmakers can use to celebrate the lives of family members, friends, neighbors, and anyone else they care about.

MMM: Does the term “legacy video” refer to what you’re doing?

Allen: I  prefer to think of them as mini biographical documentaries.   Being a storyteller I’m looking for a way to talk about a persons life and accomplishments in terms of who they’ve become or achieved in their lives.  I’ve done videos about famous or accomplished people, but the real unsung heroes are the housewives  and caretakers who sacrifice for others.   Everyone’s life matters.

MMM: Why is this kind of video important?

Allen:  We all need recognition.   If done properly it validates the person’s life and their reason for being in concrete terms.  It’s not just some passing thought or feeling, but a tangible thing that’s been seen and documented.   It  really happened.   It’s also a gift that one can leave for future generations so they can “see and hear”  who you are and also know where they’ve come from.

MMM: What are the visual elements?

Allen: I’ve used old video footage and home movies,  live interviews, old photos, awards, newspaper and magazine articles, and even keepsakes  (tickets to events or performances), anything that is meaningful to the individual.    The secret is to listen and find the story behind the object and use that object to reveal the person.

MMM: Do you have a standard script?

Allen: No. Every subject is different.   It’s the challenge of finding and telling the person’s story  that makes this so exciting for me.

MMM: What tips do you have for interviewing a person?

Allen: Treat it as if it were an informal conversation. You want your subject to relax and forget that they’re being interviewed. You want them feel like they’re just talking to you.

MMM: When does it make sense to interview other people about the subject?

Allen: If the subject has died or is unable to talk, you can often get important information from family members or others. But even when the subject is available, sometimes other people provide really interesting perspectives that enrich the story.

MMM: Can you tell us something about your editing approach?

Allen: In my opinion, shorter is better. I usually aim for a finished biography of eight to ten minutes.

MMM: If a person’s had a long and rich life, how do you squeeze it into such a short video?

Allen: The secret is limiting the scope of the story to one, two, or three topics. Trying to cover everything tends to dilute rather than enhance the story.

MMM: So that means you leave out clips that you’ve shot?

Allen: Yes, that’s an important part of the editing process.

MMM:  Are there other editing techniques that you rely on?

Allen:  The main one is the Ken Burns Effect. Named for the famous documentarian who made the Civil War series,  it allows the filmmaker to add movement to still images, for example, zooming in or out. MMM: How do you choose the music?

Allen:  If possible, I have the subject choose it or  someone who is close to the person. It helps keep my ego and personal choices out of the process. This approach can reveal another dimension of the subject’s personality because for many people, music is an important part of their lives.

MMM: How did you get into producing biography videos?

Allen:  I was asked to do a memorial video for a Superior Court Judge and musician and discovered that I truly loved the challenge of tell people’s stories that reveal who they are in a way that touches people’s hearts and minds. I love the process of creating personal documentaries —because everyone is important!

Leading with your name — even as a question — is important for recognition and building relationships.

2. State what you do.

Give people an idea of what you do daily and where you work. Your job title is how the people put you into context and consider whether your profession relates to their industry.

So detail your most relevant work in your short bios, like CEO, professor, and author.

Take a cue from Angela Duckworth , who specifies what she does in her LinkedIn bio:

3. Add key skills or areas of expertise.

If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.

  • A joke. "Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. At least that’s what I learned when I created…"
  • Mention a hobby. "I’ll be honest: for me, tennis is life — Go Nadal!"
  • A fun fact. "Every year, I watch 100 new films! I’m a cinephile and love every movie genre."
  • A few emojis related to your interests. "🎶🤖🎾🎬🎭"

Whichever way you choose to get personal, give people a glimpse into who you are as an individual.

When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible — but this isn’t the most effective approach.

Instead, focus on including the details that you and your audience care about most and leave out the fluff.

What I love most about Tristen's bio is that it’s a great example of how to deliver information about yourself that is relevant to your work while also sharing fun details that audiences will find relatable.

Her bio reads:

"Building from her experience with GoCo.io and Southwest Airlines, Tristen's work has been recognized by Marketing Brew and BLACK@INBOUND. She lives in Washington, DC, attending anime conventions and painting in her free time."

Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.

  • The bio is short and direct.
  • The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.

6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.

Authentic Task

Many students are familiar with Ken Burns’ groundbreaking documentaries. While many students dread writing biographies, ask them to transform their writing into a compelling digital documentary about a person’s life to motivate them to practice this type of informational/expository writing.

Introduce your students to biographies by reading a few of them first. Jerry Spinelli’s Knots in My Yo-Yo String: The Autobiography of a Kid or Daniel Dyer’s Jack London: A Biography provide insight into an author’s background and help students learn how personal experiences affect a writer’s voice.

Discuss the factors that make a good biography. A great biography is also a great story, and while a biography needs to include facts, a simple listing of them may not be compelling. Have students brainstorm questions they can ask to make a biography more interesting. You might prompt their thinking with questions like:

  • Did the person’s background influence what he or she believed in or how the person acted?
  • What personal qualities helped or hindered this person?
  • Was this person admirable or simply famous?

Let your student's know that they will be writing biographies and then transforming them into digital documentaries. Provide a list of people for students to choose from or have your class brainstorm a list. You could focus on presidents, famous people from your state, inventors, or authors.

Have students select a person and complete research on this person and the time period in which he or she lived.

Rather than focusing on famous people, consider tasking students with creating short feature films about local community heroes or even family members.

When their research is complete, work through your normal biography writing process. Depending on student writing ability, you may want to give them an outline for what information should be included in each paragraph of the biography.

When a first draft is complete, have students pair with another student to edit and revise their rough draft before publishing a final draft.

Form small teams students who have studied the same person or are interested in making a video of a particular person.

Have the teams review each team member’s biography, highlighting the parts that they like the most. The team should then work together to create an outline of their ideas and begin developing a storyboard.

Teams should now determine roles for completing their video biography> For example, you might want to assign roles and/or tasks such as:

  • Producer/Director - oversees all aspects of production and creation
  • Visual Effects - locates images appropriate to each scene in storyboard
  • Writer - transforms outline and storyboard into screenplay
  • Voice Talent - records the screenplay with personality and intonation
  • Post-Production Designer - combines and edits all media into final product

Have the teams share the video biographies with the rest of the class, at a school assembly, or even on local access television station.

Make sure to evaluate the rough draft of the biography and the productivity of the team discussions before you assess the final biography. You will also want to evaluate the process the team uses to identify topics and well-written sections of the initial biographies as they write their screenplay. The screenplay serves as another tangible example of understanding and skill, as does the storyboard of the screenplay.

The video biography will serve as the culminating project and summative assessment. You may also want to assess team work, responsibility, organization, and problem solving.

Why Starliner is stuck in space: Everything we know about Boeing’s troubled mission

It’s been almost two weeks since Boeing’s Starliner defied all odds and made it into space. Despite some troubling helium leaks, NASA greenlit the launch, sending two astronauts into space aboard Boeing’s spacecraft. A few engine issues later, and the spacecraft docked with the ISS successfully. Everything seemed alright. They started preparing to come home. Now, because of those same helium leaks, Starliner’s astronauts will remain aboard the ISS until at least July 2—possibly longer.

See, the main reason Starliner is “stuck” in space right now is that NASA and Boeing want to study the leaks that the spacecraft is experiencing. They want to understand what is happening, and maybe even figure out how to stop it. Of course, there isn’t any way to fix these Starliner leaks in space. But, studying them could provide a lot of important data for future Starliner missions.

That’s all well and good, but these helium leaks aren’t new. They’ve been there. Starliner launched with them. And, yes, currently, the spacecraft has more than enough helium to get the astronauts back to Earth—and then some. But, as the days wear on, and more of that helium leaks out, the possibility of sending those astronauts back aboard Starliner becomes less likely.

The good news is, they wouldn’t be stranded in space forever. They’d most likely be able to hitch a ride back down to Earth on the next SpaceX Dragon that is sent up to the station. But, that might mean waiting even longer to return to their families. Considering the leaks have already put them on the station much longer than they anticipated, that isn’t exactly ideal.

NASA says it is letting the data drive its decision on when to bring Starliner home. Unfortunately, as it stands, it’s unclear if these astronauts will actually be coming home on July 2 or if they’ll be forced to wait. Hopefully, the data NASA and Boeing gather from this situation is helpful—and hopefully, Boeing will take a long, hard look at how it builds its vehicles going forward to ensure these kinds of issues don’t happen in the future.
