Otherwise, all the images that are available of your restaurant might be the ones that customers have clicked, which may not be a good thing. Next, showcase your best dishes and give a brief explanation of the same as well. Then double-check the address and contact details that you have entered for the restaurant. Finally, try getting a safety badge which is given out by Zomato for restaurants that follow strict safety protocols. That ought to do the trick. 

4. Microbloggers to the rescue

Remember the weighted average topic that I mentioned in the beginning? It’s time to discuss that in detail. Zomato has a foodie level system where each customer is awarded a rank from anywhere between level 1 and level 13 (you become a Connoisseur here). The level of the customer on Zomato will have an impact on the rating as Zomato follows the weighted average method. This means that the higher level the customer is, the more impact their reviews have. Microbloggers might have a medium to a high level on Zomato, so you can send some of your top dishes for them to review and ask them to post their rating on Zomato. This is by far one of the most effective ways to quickly increase your ratings. 

5. The old-fashioned method

As customers visit your restaurant, make sure to leave a review and rating behind before they leave. This is a small step but most restaurants are reluctant to ask customers for a review. You have the customers right before you, so asking them to spare a few minutes to give a quick review of your restaurant may not be such a bad idea. Ask your staff to make it a priority to do this activity, and you will be impressed by how impactful this small step is.

Zomato has updated its reviews and ratings system and will now offer separate Delivery and Dining ratings. With this change, the company is trying to incorporate some of the feedback it has received from users as well as restaurant owners, the Gurugram-based restaurant aggregator said in a blog post on Thursday. Users will see the two ratings on the restaurant pages, in black and red colour scheme. Zomato will offer the ratings on a contextual basis, which means there won't both Delivery and Dining ratings for cloud restaurants.

The ratings change by Zomato is currently live in India, United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. The company hasn't revealed any plans to expand the system to other markets. However, it mentioned in the blog post that in the rest of its markets, it will continue to show a single unified rating that will be powered by an improved algorithm.

Zomato asked its users and restaurant partners to provide feedback on the new ratings system in February. “However, as the food delivery industry matured, we have started noticing a significant disparity between the average dining rating, and the average delivery rating for the same restaurant,” Zomato Co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal had said at that time.

The change in the ratings comes amid the coronavirus outbreak and nationwide lockdown, both of which have severely hampered restaurant operations across the country. However, it will certainly be useful in cases when users want to know how good a restaurant is in terms of offering deliveries as people can still order food deliveries through Zomato and other food delivery apps at most locations in the country.

Algorithm improvements In addition to its new ratings system, Zomato has improved its algorithm to “identify and remove fake reviews comprehensively”. Zomato's Global Head for New Products and Growth Riddhi Jain said in the blog post that the company noticed bad actors in the system that attempt to make bogus reviews which ultimately impact the market.

In some cases, Jain noted that users offer five star reviews in exchange for money or free meals, restaurants approach users with a high Foodie Level on the platform to write positive reviews, and PR agencies farm users to write reviews for their clients. All these bad actors will be identified “retrospectively” through the latest change in the algorithm, the executive claimed.

“If a restaurant has engaged in review solicitation of any kind in the past, they will see a negative impact on their ratings with immediate effect,” Jain said.

Zomato will also add a banner on the listing of the restaurants who demonstrate “a repeated pattern of solicitation”. This will help users identify those restaurants at a glance and place orders accordingly. Moreover, the change seems similar to what the company announced last year as well.

This is notably not the first time when Zomato has improved its ratings system to limit fake reviews. The company made some changes in its algorithm back in 2016 and 2018 as well. However, some people found loopholes in those changes.

What are good guidelines to follow when writing app reviews?

I want to start reviewing apps and games on my personal blog for a change, but I've never reviewed an app before. I usually write whatever comes to mind when I blog, but I have been browsing around, and I've seen people write over 1000 words of reviews for a simple app or game.

Is there a guide or a template I should follow when reviewing an app? Or should I develop it as it goes?

What do people usually look for in a review say for free or paid apps?

-The word count is not the most important thing. It is your blog, your review, your opinion. It is not a college assignment that it should have a word limit.

-The best idea to write a review for an app or a game is to "develop it as it goes" like you mentioned.

-The idea is to give your views about the app or the game.

-A couple of things that readers might want you to include in your review are:

  • The main tasks that the app can do (what is the app supposed to do)
  • How good is the app at doing what it is supposed to do
  • How "smooth" is the app (how smoothly/effortlessly would the app run under specified conditions)
  • What are the minimum requirements for the app
  • Is the app paid or free
  • How does the app compare to similar apps (names of similar apps, is this app better than them etc.)
  • If the app is paid, is it worth paying for?
  • For how long would you expect the app to stay in the market (is it something novel that may not have competitors for sometime or is it just another app that has come and will go)
  • Any problems or missing features with the app
  • Anything unique about the app that others do not have
  • Any updates planned (if you have info on this, that is)
  • A rating out of 5 or 10 (for some reason people like rating out of 5)
  • Your final verdict (to go for the app or not)

-Write it in free flowing manner that comes naturally to you. It is your blog, after all. You are not writing an academic paper so you do not have to plan like one. Blogging can be done free style.

How to Put Zomato Reviews on Your Website

Zomato Reviews provide high-quality content generated by the customers who had an impactful experience at your restaurant. We’ll show you how to put the best of these reviews on your website, where they matter the most.

Potential customers nearly always turn to a business’ website for more information about what an experience there is like. Including reviews from more platforms, like Zomato, shows you really care about what your customers think. It tells them that you take their feedback seriously.

If you’re a restaurant of any kind and you’re not already using Zomato, chances are that your listing exists anyway. Claim your listings across as many platforms as you can manage to help protect your online reputation. Zomato is a particularly important platform for restaurants because it’s used similarly to Yelp. Except Zomato only caters to the food-service industry.

Here’s how you can include your Zomato reviews on your website.

Step 1: Get WP Business Reviews if You Don’t Have It

To begin, you need a comprehensive way to embed reviews on your website from all platforms. WP Business Reviews does just that. If you already have our reviews plugin, skip ahead to step two.

Step 2: Connect Zomato Reviews Using the API

Once WP Business Reviews is set up, you can connect to Zomato using their API. You’ll need to create your own account on Zomato to get an API key . Once you’ve done that, add it to your Reviews settings in your WordPress Dashboard.

First, make sure your global Zomato settings are activated. Find the Zomato settings by going to Dashboard > Reviews > Settings > Platforms . From there you can enable the Zomato Reviews global settings. Then choose the Zomato tab so you can enter your API key.

Step 3: Create a Zomato Collection

Next, head to Reviews > Collections > Add Zomato Collection . On this page you can search for any restaurant to pull in their Zomato Reviews.

Keep in mind that the Zomato API has limitations. So, you can only pull in the latest five reviews and use the API 1,000 times per day. That means you can only search for 1,000 restaurants on a daily basis. If you exceed 1,000 searches per day on a single site, please get up and stretch a little before you create a new API key.

Even though Zomato only pulls in the latest five reviews, you can always add single reviews and assign the Zomato platform to them. WP Business reviews also provides the option to automatically pull in new reviews on a daily or weekly basis to add your new reviews over time.

Step 4: Choose Your Settings and Save Your Collection

Now that you’ve pulled in the latest five Zomato Reviews, you can style them however you’d like. In this example, we chose to use the gallery format for a coffee shop Zomato Reviews collection. Each review was limited to only the first 100 characters to save space. We also went with dark mode because we like our coffee black.

Step 5: Add your Zomato Reviews to Your Tagged Collections

Lastly, add your Zomato Reviews to your other tagged collections using tags. It helps to mix your Zomato, Google, Yelp, Facebook, and Custom Reviews together. Mixing up the platforms provides more variety and proves to your customers that you’re listening, on all platforms.

Pay Attention to Diners on Zomato  

No matter how you choose to include Zomato in your marketing strategy, make sure you’re at least paying attention to the reviews it generates. This platform is full of restaurant-goers who take their dining experiences seriously.

Don’t take it personally

Don’t take it personally. It isn’t about you, it’s about your restaurant. Someone dined at your restaurant and had a bad experience. Sit back, take a deep breath and look at it objectively. Read the review thrice if you need to, and address every single problem. The only way to get rid of any negativity is to face it. The more you let it linger, the more it’s going to affect your business.

Treat this as real-time feedback

Negative reviews more often than not, is feedback. Particularly, when it’s about service and specific experiences with food – like if a diner found something in their plate, or if their food was served cold, and the likes. As right as you may be about being extremely cautious of how food is served at your restaurant, give the benefit of doubt to the customer. Acknowledge, apologize, and ensure that feedback makes its way to your staff.

Look at it as an opportunity

Look at a negative review as an opportunity for conversion. When someone’s complaining, they want to be heard and even pacified. And when you do address their issues, there is closure – for them, and for you. When they see your concern for them and how you value their feedback, there is a high possibility of them returning to give your restaurant another chance. Now, it’s up to your staff to ensure the customer has the best experience.

All reviews are subjective opinions. You can’t possibly believe that every single customer that walks into your restaurant has had an amazing time. Someone won’t like the food, there will be another who didn’t like the music, and another who thought the staff wasn’t friendly enough. It’s a given that you can’t please every palate. If a customer didn’t like your spaghetti alla carbonara because it wasn’t spicy enough, you can respond by telling them that a carbonara isn’t meant to be spicy. If they aren’t convinced, it’s alright. Let this one go.

There’s another side to negative reviews as well. The kinds that aren’t genuine. For most of such cases, Zomato has checks in place.

  • Tracks each user’s activity by their ratings and reviews pattern
  • Assigns a Credibility Score to users based on their activity and followership
  • Users with low credibility score have little impact of your rating
  • Only reviews by high-credibility users will appear on the popular reviews tab

Either way, your safest bet is to respond to reviews without dwelling on them. You have a restaurant that needs to be run. Don’t let the negativity take up your time and peace. You can’t control what one says online, but you can salvage the situation with damage control. Since all good end things on a sweet note, here’s an example of good responses to a negative as well a positive review.

Zomato’s rapid pace of development and focus on feature additions, albeit great for customers, resulted in a need to optimize their codebase and UX. While in pursuit of adding new features, Zomato wanted to keep their performance up to par as well. With multiple SDKs consuming resources that weren’t always required, there was a need to streamline and rationalize the codebase.

All this was underpinned by Zomato’s expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India, where people largely use low to mid tier devices with relatively limited processing capacity. With the inclusion of these devices the team had to ensure the same world class user experience as was in higher tier devices.

What did they do?

Zomato used a simple rubric to analyze their overheads - which solution can give the best return on investment vs the effort by the development team. Using this rubric, the team started with a 4-month long optimization and improvement journey.

The first step was to look into the system traces to find issues, time-based analysis and prioritise accordingly. Perfetto is the perfect tool to analyse, profile and trace Android processes. Zomato utilised the tool to trace all the SDKs being initialized during app startup and point out those that can be removed or loaded lazily.

Removing the legacy SDKs and unused 3P libraries was the top priority as it was a low-effort, high-gain task. This approach helped Zomato in saving precious 20% in the app startup time.

Many third-party libraries use content providers to initialise on the app start, which affects the app startup time. Zomato uses Facebook SDK for login, but the user also has other login options, so initialising the SDK at the startup is inefficient. With the introduction of the App Startup library , Zomato only loads the SDK if the user is going for the Facebook login option. This helped them in reducing startup time by ~6%!

The next step was improving the inflation time of the views as the rendering and inflation of the view itself can take a significant time in a complex UI structure like Zomato’s. Viewstub helps in increasing the efficiency as it allows views to be created but not added to the view hierarchy unless required. Viewstubs are more efficient than using View. GONE as even if the view is in GONE state, it will be getting inflated and will eat up memory and CPU usage. Zomato flattened their view hierarchy and merged layouts along with viewstubs in their login activity. These changes significantly improved the inflation time by 7%.

Android profiler helped in optimising memory usage, as it allows tracking CPU activity, memory and network in real-time. The profiler enabled them to identify the root issue for the locking situations and memory overheads and fix it accordingly. Zomato also worked on their caching mechanism to achieve a massive drop of 60% in out of memory issues.

Zomato’s performance gains helped them create a much smoother experience. Further UI improvements and caching, reduced the janking too.

App to homepage (clicking on the app icon to a fully loaded and usable homepage) is a key business metric that Zomato tracked internally. After the improvements were implemented, they saw a meaningful uptick in this metric. Customers that landed on a fully loaded page increased by about 20% during this period.

This led to an improvement in Day 1 customer retention by about 90%! These improvements had a trickle down effect on their forward funnels as well - the overall order through rate (home -> menu -> cart -> order) improved by ~1.5 percentage points i.e around 600K orders MoM.

According to Firebase performance’s cold startup metric, there was an improvement of 25% on average, and for low/mid end devices, the cold app startup time improvement reached up to 30%.

App startup time performance is an important metric affecting user perception and investing efforts to optimize performance can lead to a significant impact on the business as well.

Average service by Zomato

I am using Zomato app and I have ordered food from here many times. I have faced some issue in the beginning due to some location problem. Delivery agent's google map was not working properly and he couldn't deliver food on time. I have faced the same issue two times from Zomato. Delivery boy was too friendly and humble person first time but the second time delivery boy was very rude, shouting and teasing me like anything so I contacted customer care and informed about the issue with delivery boy and they promised me that you won't get this issues in future.

Cheating and Looting at Zomato platform

In addition to an increase in platform fee, they are charging much higher rates of the product than you purchase from the shop directly, GST and Restaurant charges are also charged separately which shopkeeper doesn't charge, packing charge which the shopkeeper doesn't charging. It means ZOMATO is looting and cheating with the consumers. It's high time to initiate stern action against the ZOMATO by Ministry of Consumers Affairs Govt of India immediately.

Restaurants owners are the new slaves for Zomato

So I can never complaint zomato app for not delivering food or quality as they are just a 3rd party. My issue is that Zoamto is treating restaurants, especially new ones, as s**t. They falsely lower the rating of their dishes and when the restaurants complaints they even more bring down theor ratings, which I think is a system to forece then to run ads or what ever. Now when we complaint them as per their TICKETS process they never give a preper answer and if you are a stuburn person like me they will even close all your tickets even without replying. Order Cancelled by Zomato and Money not Refunded

Your service is pathetic. I paid for order, order wasn’t delivered and they cancelled my orders just because incompetent drivers can’t find the address inspite of full address given. I wish to have refund. Your customer care is at another level of stupid people because they keep on writing one line, I can’t do anything order is cancelled. I didn’t cancel it. If your driver can’t find address, not my problem. Refund my money back!
