Surprise fee and mixing up work

After completing my resume it would not let me download it unless I paid , which was not clear in the beginning and a surprise fee after doing all that work was very annoying. Not only that but AFTER I PAID I downloaded my resume I saw that everything was messed up, some jobs were completely deleted, the wrong title was with the wrong job everything that wasn't deleted was a jumbled up mess that I had to fix. Not worth it

Date of experience : April 09, 2024

Hi, We're genuinely sorry to hear about your frustrating experience. Our aim is to provide a seamless and efficient service, and it's disappointing to hear that we fell short of your expectations. We apologize for any confusion regarding the download process and the unexpected fee. Regarding the formatting issues you encountered with your resume after downloading, we understand how crucial it is for your document to maintain its integrity. We regret that your experience did not reflect this. We value your feedback and would like to assist you further in resolving these issues. Please contact our customer support team so we can investigate the problem with your resume and ensure that it is corrected to your satisfaction. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused, and we're here to help address any remaining concerns you may have.

“Great customer service!”

Easy to use site with great customer service! Loved the choices of templates. Very easy to add your details and edit at any time. Very user-friendly.

“Another scam”

Just another website that will make you believe you paid for a 1 time CV then start charging you a monthly fee afterwards and refusing to refund you even when you cancel the subscription using the famous "Company policy" excuse!

Resumehelp.com charged our account $25.00 a month for 18 months when we cancelled the services after 3 months. The customer service was unwilling to listen to the situation and work with us. I HIGHLY recommend using a different company with a reputable service. I ABSOLUTELY think they are aware of accounts not being used and continue to charge them after the free amount of time.

They would do anything just to not let you know that they've been secretly charging your account. Without email or forewarning. The term that you'll be charge $25 after the 14day trial was deliberately put in small letters under the term so that you won't notice it. This site is a SCAM and a very clever scheme. Nice one capitalists u win this time, hope u choke on all ur blood money. I wouldn't have known if I didn't check my bank account.

Tip for consumers: DONT

No pricing is shown until you try to download or review/edit your resume. It is not even clear that I was using ResumeHelp, since I unknowingly entered the site through Indeed. When I called the help number (took me 10 minutes to find one), the agent argued with me that I wasn't speaking to Indeed (didn't think I was). When I got fed up, I asked to have my 14-day user account cancelled at once, because this screen was the first information that I would be charged $24/month once the 14-day period expired. Instead of cancelling my account, the agent signed me up for another $3 offer... for what? When I called to follow up, the new agent told me that the first agent had "put in the notes" that she gave me other offers and I "chose" the one that was charged today. Reporting to my credit card company and to the state attorney general's office on a fraud complaint form.

Tip for consumers: You can't see what they are going to charge you for, so don't spend a lot of time working on your resume before saving it so you can see the associated fees.

HORRIBLE! I called to cancel my 14 day trial and "Lewis" wouldn't let me go without continuously pitching more plans. I'll never use them again, if I need in the future.

Q&A (13)

Was anyone able to get their money back can you report them to your bank for a refund for unauthorised charges.

They will give the absolute run around. I had them tell me they had no re it's of me being a customer, even with my account details. I ended up going trough the Better Business Bureau. BBB managed to recover 65% of the money stolen from my account. The resume help swindlers refused to refund everything they had stolen. That's how they make their money after all.

I only want to use this one time. i really don't want to sign up for it?

Then don't, because they will charge you $24.90 even if you cancel your subscription immediately after printing your resume.

I found the set thinking it was free, then in order to access the template, i had to pay. i did pay, then cancelled further membership. however just l

I just cancelled my 14 day subscription now. So after reading all these reviews I think I will stay on the safe side too and cut this credit card in half before this month is up, just to be on the safe side

How do i cancel my subscription to resume.com?

You have to use the chat function on the website and request that an agent assist you with the request

I am a past customer who needs to update do you keep a copy that i can update

Even you've written a resume before, the job market is always changing and it can be hard to keep up with. Having a fresh resume ready when you aren't searching can make a huge difference if you need it in a pinch. New formats, new terms and making sure your experience is not only up to date but relevant to the job you're applying for can be stressful. Take the pressure off with the best resume writing services.

Some of what you'll need to include in your resume will depend on the industry you want to work in. While it can vary, employers will likely look at your education, work history and skills. We’ve combed through dozens of resume services looking at the most helpful features across a variety of needs. We looked especially closely at the number of custom templates, the amount of guidance the service offered, the ease of navigation and the robustness of the service's privacy policy. Each of these templates and professional writing services will help you create a complete resume that best reflects your skills and experience at an affordable price.

What’s the best resume builder website?

The best resume template and builder should give you a variety of options to customize your resume. Once you’re happy with your resume, you can download it for free in multiple formats.

Depending on where you’re at in the job application process, you might need more guidance than a template. These professional writing services will pair you with experienced writers and coaches to help you craft and perfect resumes, LinkedIn profiles, cover letters and more. These services include more personalized coaching and features, but they tend to be more expensive. We’ve collected a range of options for your budget and needs. Because your resume likely includes your contact information and some personal information, we've also included information about each service's privacy policy.

Best option for your first resume

Resume genius.

The website Resume Genius says you can "make a professional resume in 12 minutes." We tested it out and indeed had a solid first draft of an easy resume completed in about 10 minutes. Resume Genius takes you step-by-step through the process, prompting you with questions about your education and work experience to help you fill out the applicable sections. Resume Genius is particularly helpful because you can search for a job and see prewritten text for the description that you can add or edit. When finished, you can easily toggle between different templates to see what looks best for the final product. You also have the option to directly share your resume with Indeed or Resume Library.

The site can also help you build cover letters and curriculum vitae. After you input all your information, you can choose different layout styles and colors. It's easy to move through, but you have to do it in order and fill in all the information before continuing. Resume Genius also offers examples of resumes, CVs and cover letters for specific jobs, as well as recommended jobs near you. You can download the resume you create for $3 (which starts a 14-day trial for Resume Genius Pro), or $8 (which kicks off a monthly subscription plan). If you fail to cancel your trial before the 14 days are up, you'll be billed $24 every four weeks, according to the site.

On Trustpilot at the time of this publication, the site has 4.6 out of 5 stars based on more than 38,000 reviews. Note that if you register on the site, Resume Genius does collect personally identifiable information and may share it with third parties for advertising and other purposes, according to its privacy policy. The account deletion process is buried in the Terms of Service . According to Resume Genius, complete data erasure can take up to 30 days, but they may retain "certain information in accordance with privacy laws."

Easiest resume builder to use

Indeed resume builder.

It's free to create a resume or post your current resume on Indeed. If you're building a new one, you can choose between eight templates. The resume sections are highlighted and when you click, each section expands specific text fields. You can swap templates at any time without losing your work, as well. There are also options for toggling sections on and off, in addition to rearranging them. When you're finished, you can download a free PDF of your work history.

Indeed Resume Builder also offers optional professional advice for your new resume. After you download the resume you created, you'll get a prompt and can click Get Resume Help From a Real Person. Fill out a short questionnaire about what type of help you want and upload your resume (it's OK if you haven't built one). This service usually costs $89 unless you've applied to at least 10 jobs using your Indeed resume. According to Indeed, if you haven't received an interview request within 60 days of receiving your new resume, you can request a one-time rewrite.

For $19, you can take a quiz and get feedback from a professional to get you started. You can also use Indeed's automated instant report system for free. The system returns quick tips to improve your resume.

Indeed's privacy policy says that it does collect and share user data with third-party providers to connect job seekers with employers and improve services. Best free iOS resume builder

Resume star 2: pro cv designer.

Resume Star 2 isn't the most visually stunning resume design app for iOS, but it gets the job done. To use, tap each section of the resume, fill in your information and it will fill in a traditional template (you only get one layout). The app offers some example resumes you can start with and edit as needed, including job-specific ones for a: cashier, dental hygienist, receptionist, waitress, mechanic and senior manager.

You can add or delete any sections you like without needing to hit save every time you add information, and you can see your resume update as you go. The autosave feature makes it easy to toggle quickly between the different sections as well. At the end, you'll have a basic resume ready to go. The app's interface doesn't offer as much guidance about how to write your resume or what types of information to include. If you need extra help, tap the information icon in the bottom left and choose the Resume Writing Guide. This will open up a crash course on resume writing in your mobile browser. It also includes a job search feature.

The app collects payment via donations after you use the service -- you don’t have to pay if you don’t want to. The app connects to iCloud, and you can export your resume as a PDF to any location on your device(s). If you are happy with the service, you can choose the $6 "helped a bit" tier, a standard donation of $10, or the "really helped me" tier for $25.

Resume Star 2 has a 4.8 out of 5 rating, and more than 1,800 ratings in the App Store . The first version, Resume Star: Pro CV Maker, which is the same except for the iCloud connection, had a 4.9-star rating and more than 16,000 reviews. The site does not collect personally identifiable information without user consent, which seems to make it one of the more secure options available.

Best free Android resume writing service

Intelligentcv resume builder app.

Intelligent CV's Resume Builder App offers 42 resume templates and allows you to change font colors. Each resume section appears on a list, and you can move through sections in whichever order you choose, save and go on to another. You also have the option to add, delete or rearrange sections such as education, experience and skills. There’s a Help icon in each section for a little bit of extra guidance. Once you're finished, you can download your document for free as a PDF, which you can then save on your device or send via email or text.

On the downside, the app is ad-supported and ads for other resume creators do pop up, which can get confusing. The app also offers less guidance than some of the other services, which means it's not a great option if you're new to resumes.

Resume Builder App has one of the strongest privacy policies of the bunch. The app does not collect personally identifiable information , though third-party services (including Google Play services and analytics firms) may collect information. The app has 4.6 out of 5 stars and more than 424,000 Google Play Store ratings and is free to download.

A 60-day interview guarantee

Resumewriters.com.

ResumeWriters.com offers a guarantee: If you don't get a job interview with a potential employer within two months of getting your new resume, they'll rewrite it for free. The service claims that in the 20 years and tens of thousands of resumes completed under this guarantee, it averages fewer than five requests for rewrites per year.

To use the resume writing service, submit your current resume or career information on the site, and an experienced resume writer will contact you to assess your materials and plan out what you need. You'll get a first draft back within 72 hours and can work with the writer on revisions until you're satisfied with the result.

ResumeWriters offers student, professional, executive and career-change resume services, as well as CV services for those conducting their job search in fields specific to the military, IT and research. The resume services cost $170 for students and $200 for the professional level, with a cover letter, one-on-one consultation and LinkedIn profile. The career change level ($250) is a comprehensive package that includes everything plus a post-interview follow-up letter, and the highest tier is the executive package that guarantees applicants its most experienced writers for $300.

A fast pass through HR screening software

Zipjob’s professional resume writers optimize your resume to get through the applicant tracking system (ATS) software used by the majority of employers to automatically scan and sort resumes. An expert writes your resume and scans it through the ATS to ensure it will make it through to the hiring manager's desk.

To use the service, upload your resume or fill out a form to start from scratch. You'll be matched with a professional resume writer who will work with you to improve it and will then scan the final product to make sure it passes through the screening algorithms. Depending on which package you choose, your resume will be ready in three to seven days.

You can choose from three packages: Launch (resume writing and unlimited revisions for $139), Fast Track (adds a cover letter and a 60-day interview guarantee for $189) or Premium (adds a top resume writer, LinkedIn profile optimization, future resume updates and expedited delivery for $299).

You can also add help with a cover letter for an additional $119 or a LinkedIn profile for $399.

How we tested resume sites and services

When we evaluated the different resume templates and builders, we looked at how each site or app allowed you to create new resumes, browse templates or upload and edit existing resumes. We also looked at how easy or hard it would be to customize different templates and sections, how much guidance was available, how user-friendly it was to navigate, plus reading and understanding each company’s privacy policies.

Some of our picks are free, some enlist the help of professional writers and some require a subscription or one-time payment. When it comes to premium or paid services, we evaluated how inclusive its packages were compared to basic or free versions. In many cases for the professional writing services, these paid tiers included more guidance and additional job search support like a cover letter and LinkedIn editing, suggested jobs to apply to and interview coaching.

Factors to consider when choosing a resume writing service

This was a key factor when compiling this list. Whether you’re looking for a free service to boost your current resume or interested in professional editing services, there’s something for everyone’s price range.

Ease of use

When looking at each website, we looked at how easy it was to navigate, browse templates and add, edit or remove different sections. We also considered whether you can download and share your resume for free and in what format.

Customization options

Customization options were essential, as everyone’s resume is going to look different. Having easy user control over your resume helps you create a resume that meets your industry’s standards and showcases your professional experiences.

Privacy policies

Privacy policies were the final important factor to consider, as many of these are websites and apps that can collect and store your personal information. All of the services and websites included on this list have decent privacy settings, and we noted which ones have exceptionally clear use cases and account deletion policies.

Resume writing FAQs

What is a resume builder.

A resume builder is a company that has a website or app that helps you create and customize your resume. You can use pre-existing templates or create your own from scratch.

What is a resume writing service?

A resume writing service is a company that pairs you with a coach or writer to work with you to create, perfect and tailor your resume, cover letters and other job application materials. These tend to be more inclusive packages and therefore more expensive than simple resume template websites.

What is the best resume format to use?

The best format for your resume is going to depend on the job you are applying to, along with your work experience. Resume templates can help you format and include all the necessary information like your education, work experience, skills and contact information.

How to Avoid Résumé Writing Scams

Make sure the writer you hire doesn't write you out of a job opportunity — and your cash.

Sid Kirchheimer,

Avoid resume scams

| If you're struggling to get your résumé in tip-top shape, then it might be time to call in some professional help. Before you hire a résumé writer, though, make sure you don't fall victim to a scam instead.

If you do a web search for "résumé writer," you'll come across all kinds of sites, including those for complaints and free links that connect you to malware instead of a helpful person you want to hire. Some of the lowball offers that you see might seem too good to be true — and they often are.

There's no doubt that a good résumé can generate enough interest to help you get an interview . But professional résumé writers can charge as much as $2,000, with no guarantee of results. (In fact, any résumé writer who "guarantees" that his or her work will land you a job is your cue to find another.) Here's how to get the "write" stuff without being wronged:

1. Consider (reputable) do-it-yourself options

If money is an issue, first try getting guidance to help you improve your résumé. In addition to  AARP's Work channel , universities sometimes provide free or low-cost résumé writing classes, often hosted by faculty. Online help is available at  CareerOneStop.org  and some USDA-affiliated  county cooperative extension services . Avoid unfamiliar websites that promise résumé writing links or attachments; they could be a front for malware-spreading scammers.

2. Where to find pros

Some (but not all) members of the  National Résumé Writers' Association (NRWA)  and the  Professional Association of Résumé Writers & Career Coaches (PARW/CC)  have earned association-provided certification. While those credentials offer some indication of expertise, they aren't foolproof.

When searching websites of résumé writing services, head to the "About Us" page. Better ones will have detailed info about their writers and company. On the other hand, a "résumé mill" typically uses template documents that others will not, says Ruth Pankratz of the NRWA. Also seek recommendations from career consultants, employment agencies or even your previous employer. Of course, you'll want to check reputations with the  Better Business Bureau  and do an online search on  Ripoff Report  or other complaint boards.

3. Do an interview

Never hire a résumé writer who relies solely on provided forms you're asked to complete; the good ones take time to interview clients about their experience, qualifications and goals. "It's really best to hire a local résumé writer," says Frank Fox of PARW/CC. "You want to personally meet with that person and know where they are while working for you." An online-only relationship is ripe for scams.

Also ask résumé writers about their experience and understanding of your particular industry (and writing résumés for those in it).

Then ask questions such as:

  • How will you tackle writing my résumé? How will that differ from your work for other clients?
  • How skilled are you at working with people like me (and those in my industry)? Can you provide examples to quantify your answer?
  • Can I see samples of your past work that aren't posted on your website? Can you provide recent clients I can call for references? (Take a pass on those who provide neither.)
  • What did you do before becoming a résumé writer? What made you enter this profession?

AARP® Dental Insurance Plan administered by Delta Dental Insurance Company

Dental insurance plans for members and their families

4. Know the bottom-line price

Many résumé writers charge by the hour — between $15 and $250 — so ask what the cost covers. (The initial consultation should be free.) Andrew Rosen of the career advice blog  Jobacle.com  notes that many reputable résumé writers offer a conditional guarantee, including no-cost revisions or refunds for work that customers do not accept.

Up-front payment is usually required and is tax deductible. A good résumé writer should spend hours getting to know a client, and at least three to five hours to craft a résumé, says Fox. And that's a good reason to avoid online-advertised services that promise next-day résumé delivery for lowball prices, typically between $29 and $50.

Sid Kirchheimer writes about consumer issues.

Features & Services

Most ResumeHelp review testimonials place the platform among the best resume builders . It provides diverse templates and a vast collection of the industry- and job-specific samples to make your writing easier. You can also benefit from the:

  • Cover letter builder
  • Spell-checker
  • And the rich database of career tips.

Resume Builder

ResumeHelp offers 23 resume templates with a short description to help you understand what makes each unique. Additionally, there’s a color palette available so that you can try different colors on the spot.

After choosing a template, you can build your resume from scratch or upload an existing one. While preparing our ResumeHelp review, we found that the builder’s interface is intuitive and straightforward.

You have to fill out a few forms detailng your contact information, experience, education, and skills. However; you’ll find essential tips for each section to guide you.

There are numerous pre-written points that you can edit and customize if needed. In the end, you can write a resume summary or personalize any of the multiple pre-written examples.

ResumeHelp Editor

Once you finish the writing part, you’ll get an overview of your resume’s look. According to numerous ResumeHelp reviews, the editor is one of the platform’s strongest points. It allows you to adjust things according to your preference.

For example, you can choose compact, normal, large, or custom formatting, change colors and add sections. Additionally, the spell-check tool is very intuitive and quickly corrects your mistakes.

However, some users reported issues with formatting. They said the builder glitched, and they had to start from scratch. In other cases, the cover letter or resume didn’t come out as previewed. Additionally, sometimes it can be difficult to fit certain information into the format.

ResumeHelp Sample Resumes

ResumeHelp has an extensive database of resume samples you can use for inspiration. The company sorts the examples by job title and location, so you can easily find what you’re looking for. We discovered for our ResumeHelp review that users praise the option to customize and use the samples.

Letter Samples and Builder

Letters are an integral part of every job application process. From cover to thank-you letters, all have a specific goal and style. ResumeHelp provides samples for different job-related situations like family emergency leave, counteroffer job, sick leave, resignation, appreciation, and more. You can create a custom cover, business, or thank-you letter with the builder.

Cover Letter Builder

ResumeHelp provides you with 23 cover letter templates. After choosing a design, you’ll decide whether you need an all-purpose document or something more specific for a particular situation. Resumehelp com reviews show you can find the perfect option for a military transition, internship, or networking letter.

Then, you need to add information about yourself and the recipient. The builder then guides you to completing the subject, greeting, opening, call to action, and closing. You can use and customize the pre-written sections.

Ease of Use

ResumeHelp is easy to use even if you don’t have any related skills. You’ll quickly understand how the builder works as it’s very intuitive and guides you through the process. Our review of ResumeHelp wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that the site explains each process stage.

You can quickly go back and forth to adjust the sections and customize your resume until it satisfies your needs. Then, you can download your documents in PDF, Word, HTML, or TXT format.

Plans & Pricing

ResumeHelp isn’t free—you’ll have to pay at least $2.90 for the 14-day complete pass. You’ll get unlimited downloading, printing, and cover letter builder access for that period. Afterward, you’ll pay $24.90 monthly.

You can also go for the monthly subscription of $7.95, billed annually at $94.80, saving you 68%. Then you can download or print a resume from ResumeHelp as often as you wish.

Charging for downloading the documents you create is a common practice among resume writing services. While you can find a free resume builder, it would most likely fall short in customization features and download options.

Refund Policy

If you don’t need the services anymore, you can unsubscribe from ResumeHelp. You’ll get a full refund if you do it during the first 14 days. All you need to do is contact customer support and file a request. However, if you decide to cancel your subscription afterward, you’ll be charged for the remaining period.

ResumeHelp Customer Service

ResumeHelp has excellent customer support, available every day. You can reach them via phone, ticket, and live chat. The reps are knowledgeable, responsive, and can professionally guide you through any issue.

ResumeHelp review comments also reveal that users appreciate the agents’ attitude and effort to explain all the options the platform provides to ensure ultimate satisfaction with the service.

Online Ratings

The platform maintains good ratings on the major directories. On TrustPilot, it has 4.2 stars, and on Sitejabber an average rating of 3.44. According to ResumeHelp reviews, users are pleased with the large selection of templates and designs.

People also praise the customization options, general ease of use, and efficiency of customer support agents. Some users even mention the agents by name, which indicates they received personalized support with their inquiries.

On the other hand, most ResumeHelp com complaints relate to billing issues and formatting. Some users experienced trouble getting their files to look as previewed, whereas others said the design fell apart, and they had to start the process again.

ResumeHelp Review — Our Final Verdict

ResumeHelp is an easy-to-use resume builder that offers some great features. It has many appealing templates in a variety of styles, which you can further customize according to your preferences.

However, you’ll need to choose one of the two available payment plans to download your resume or cover letter. Some occasional glitches in formatting are possible, but this shouldn’t be a deal-breaker considering all perks of ResumeHelp.

People Also Ask — FAQ

ResumeHelp is one of the best-known resume-building services. The platform makes it easy for you to build and customize your resume and cover letter. The intuitive interface guides you through the writing, offering pre-written examples to assist you. Additionally, ResumeHelp has a rich library of samples and a knowledge base. You’ll find tips and guides on improving your writing and valuable career advice.

ResumeHelp takes the users’ privacy seriously. The company states that all personal data is SSL-encrypted and secured using firewalls, physical access control to the data centers, and information access authorization controls. While ResumeHelp does share your personal information with affiliates and third parties, it’s clearly outlined in the privacy policy that it’ll never distribute data without consent.

ResumeHelp allows you to build a resume and cover letter for free. However, to download and use those documents, you’ll have to pay a two-week pass for $2.90 or a monthly subscription of $7.95. You can cancel and get a full refund within the first 14 days.

You can cancel ResumeHelp anytime by contacting the customer support team via message or phone. If you do so within the first 14 days, you’re eligible for a full refund. If you don’t cancel it, the subscription auto-renews, and you’ll pay $24.90 a month. We’ve discovered for this ResumeHelp review that some users reported being charged even after canceling the service, so you should double-check with a customer representative to avoid trouble.

How We Choose Winners

Each of the free resume review services below was reviewed by a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) taking into consideration the following:

How easy it is to sign up for the free review.

The speed at which the resume review is completed.

How useful and accurate the resume review is.

This list was hand-curated to serve all industries, professions, and career levels. While free resume review checkers are not the perfect solution for a top-notch resume, they can definitely provide some useful insights.

Free Resume Review Service Reviews

Resume Worded

Resume Worded

ResumeWorded is one of the few companies on this list that actually focuses on resume reviews as a service. Rather than using their free resume critique as a lead generation method to upsell professional resume writing services, Resume Worded’s sole business is the software that provides the critique.

The Process:

After clicking the “Upload Resume” button on this site, a pop-up window opens asking you to create an account. You can create an account using Google, Facebook, or by signing up with your email.

If you choose the email option, they will proceed by asking for your name, email, and password. Once you’ve entered the required information, it will take you to a page to upload your resume.

From there, the resume critique begins to load before taking you to your overall resume score.

The Review:

Compared to other artificial intelligence (AI) generated resume scores, Resume Worded offered the most in-depth suggestions that we have seen.

After submitting your resume, you are taken to a fairly in-depth page that provides suggested bullets for your resume, a line-by-line analysis, recommended action verbs, metrics, and more.

Their critique is broken up into four main categories: Impact, Brevity, Style, and Average Bullet Score. Many of the suggested edits can be found for free, while others are locked. In order to access the full critique, you will need to “Upgrade to Pro.”

TopResume

TopResume is the largest resume writing service in the world, having helped over 300,000 professionals land more interviews since their conception.

TopResume’s free resume analysis process is about as easy as can be.

Simply click on the “Get a free resume review” button, upload your resume, and enter your email. That’s it. No long questionnaires, no sales pitches.

TopResume came in second for the best free resume review online.

The review was fairly comprehensive while including graphs, areas to improve, and even keywords and competencies that stand out on your resume.

This review told us that we appear to be focused on the following categories: 76% on sales, 7% in information technology, and 17% for other professional industries. We also learned that our top keywords are  account executive ,  prospecting ,  b2c , and  sales strategies .

The one thing that was lacking was a clear and concise recommendation on how to improve your resume. But if they offered that, you might be less inclined to use their paid service.

Best Companies That Help You Find a Job

Need Help With Your Job Search?

Did you know there are companies you can hire to help with your job search? Whether you need resume help or want someone to apply to jobs for you, we’ve reviewed the 20 best agencies to help you find a job.

Ladders

Ladders is a well-known executive job search site exclusively for six-figure earners. While resume writing is not one of their main areas of expertise, it’s fair to say that Ladders sees their fair share of resumes.

They have over 100,000 users posting and applying for jobs yearly.

Ladders set themselves apart from other free resume evaluation sites online because their results are nearly instant.

Simply upload your resume and you are instantly taken to a resume reviewer page, which provides you with a summary of your resume as well as some suggestions on how to improve it.

As the review is instant, it’s unlikely that a human eye is providing this feedback. You may consider that to be a good thing or a bad thing.

In any case, Ladders will give you some insight into what computers see when looking at your resume.

Ladders resume review tool actually provided some decent feedback.

Considering it is instantaneous and you do not have to wait 24-48 hours, this is a pretty solid service. They cover areas such as punctuation, capitalization, improvements to accomplishments, and more.

In addition to offering general advice, they actually point to the section of your resume that needs to be improved, which removes a lot of the guesswork.

Moderate/high

Skillroads

Skillroads is a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile writing service at its core. They are best known for their AI Resume Generator, which lets artificial intelligence create the best promotional resume for your next career.

Skillroads resume review site is easy to navigate.

It did not receive our “Very Easy” rating for one simple reason: while other free resume checkers ask you to upload a resume and enter your email, Skillroads also requires you to make an account by entering a password to log in.

While this is not a big deal, we wanted to point out that there are simpler resume review processes.

What we liked about Skillroads was that they provided a “Resume Score” as opposed to just a review. What we didn’t like is that we received more promotional emails from Skillroads than any other free resume review site.

The resume review was fairly comprehensive considering that it was done instantly. They break up the resume critique into seven different sections:

  • ATS Compatibility
  • Style & Formatting
  • Resume Sections
  • Career Goals
  • Accomplishments
  • First Impression & Contact Information

You can click on each of these sections in order to expand more specific recommendations for your resume. The only problem is that it doesn’t specify where the error is occurring, just that it occurs.

ZipJob

ZipJob has an excellent website that is easy to navigate and technically advanced. They are best known for their resume writing services, having received hundreds of 5-star reviews praising them for a job well done.

Of course, a great way to meet new customers is to offer a free resume review.

ZipJob keeps its process short and sweet, just how we like it.

All you have to do is upload your resume in either PDF, Doc, or Docx and then enter your email address.

After clicking the “Get a Free Resume Review” button, you reach a confirmation page that states you will receive your review in no more than 48 hours.

We appreciated ZipJob’s honesty. Upon submitting a high-quality resume, we received a response saying that the resume did not need any improvement.

This kind of honesty on a free resume review software is rare. So, we decided to try the review tool again but with a lower quality resume. This time we received a resume review with four sections:

  • Design, structure, and formatting
  • Language & writing
  • Resume scanning software test
  • Recommendations

The review provided mostly general information but also gave some specific areas to improve, along with suggestions on how to improve it. Unlike other free resume review tools, this one actually appeared to be reviewed by a real human.

The Resume Center

The Resume Center

The Resume Center is one of the United States’ most popular resume consultancies, specializing in professional resume writing services and LinkedIn/Video profile writing services.

The Resume Center does a great job of offering a free resume analysis with very few strings attached. Simply enter your email and upload your resume.

While other free resume reviews online require excessive information, The Resume Center keeps it short and sweet.

The review we received from The Resume Center was one of the most flattering reviews that we got. On our first attempt, they gave a score of 95%.

They provided a list of all the areas we got right, as well as the area that we got wrong. While we appreciated them telling us what we got wrong, we would have liked it even more if there were actionable suggestions to fix the errors.

Employment Boost

Employment Boost

Employment Boost offers a wide variety of services ranging from resume services to interview coaching and outplacement to onsite training workshops.

Employment Boost proudly offers a free resume evaluation tool that can help audit your resume and find areas to improve. They also provide a resume service coupon in hopes that you will use their professional resume service.

To sign up for the free resume grader scorecard, simply upload your resume and enter your email. This is the only review site that does not give any estimate on the time it will take to receive your review.

The Employment Boost resume evaluation, scorecard, and review focuses on five metrics for any successful resume: Style, Summary, Search Engine Optimization, Word Count, and Content.

We appreciated the ratings the resume received, however, there was very little actionable advice given from Employment Boost. They do not explicitly state what was done right, and what was done wrong.

This online resume review will be great if you want some reassurance on your resume, but don’t expect too many takeaways to make your resume better.

A live chat agent said 1 business day. However, we had to follow up 2 days later when we had not received it.

LiveCareer

LiveCareer is the parent company of MyPerfectResume – one of the largest resume builder services on the market.

MyPerfectResume does not provide professional resume writing services; rather, they have a technically advanced software program that helps enable you to build your resume on your own.

The Process:

Just upload your resume and get your resume score. It’s that simple. No email, contact info, or additional information required.

You will be taken directly to your free resume critique.

Many resume critiques require you to wait up to two business days before hearing back. Not LiveCareer. Their feedback is instant, but that comes with some limitations.

The review itself was fairly broad. It mentioned things that could be improved but did not give great recommendations on how to improve them.

Instead, they have a “Fix Now” button next to each recommendation which takes you to a signup page, so that you can register and pay for their services.

Monster

Monster is a well-known job search site with a focus on IT and technical jobs.

In addition to hosting hundreds of thousands of jobs, Monster provides a free resume assessment.

After uploading our resume, it took us to a Profile Information page to fill out additional information. Here we were asked to provide our email, name, phone, country, zip, career level, education level, and work authorization.

Upon submitting this information, Monster begins to promote their job board by asking if you’d like your resume publicly listed in their directory.

Lastly, you will end up on their homepage. Check your email for a confirmation from Monster that your resume critique is in progress.

We were underwhelmed by the free resume evaluation provided by Monster.

The most unique piece of information was the “ATS Job Fit,” which provides a percentage score on how well you would do passing through an ATS for a specific career field such as “sales” and “human resources.”

Beyond that, it was very boilerplate. The “What You Did Well” section promotes their professional resume writing service, while the “What Can Be Improved” section has general comments not specific to the resume submitted.

Best ATS Resume Checker

No matter what service you choose, we always recommend making sure your resume is ATS compatible.

Jobscan has developed the top-rated resume scanning software (resume ATS scanner) to see how you rank in the eyes of an Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

Their software is simple.

Go to Jobscan’s website , and then copy and paste your resume, as well as the job description onto their site.

After clicking “Scan,” Jobscan will show you how you score and recommend resume edits to rank higher for the specific job.

This is the only tool on the list that ranks you compared to a specific job, instead of just providing a general ranking.

Skip The Resume Review – Hire A Professional

Although free resume reviews can be tempting, not everyone wants to fix their resume errors themselves.

Many of the services that offer free reviews only give enough information to make you feel overwhelmed, and then push their professional resume writing services to fix the mistakes they pointed out.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with a free review, it may be more beneficial to hire a professional writer (and avoid spammy emails).

That’s where Find My Profession comes in. Our elite resume writers create custom, tailored documents that showcase your unique skills and experiences. Our team of professional writers knows exactly what hiring managers are looking for and can help you stand out from the competition.

4 Resume Mistakes to Avoid When You Don’t Have Much Experience

  • Irina Cozma

is resume help safe

A good resume can set you apart and help you land that interview.

Understanding the common mistakes job candidates make on resumes, and how to overcome them, can set you apart from your competitors. The first mistake is including irrelevant work experience. Instead, only add roles that are relevant to the position you’re applying for. The second is customizing your resume. While it’s in your benefit to adjust your resume to better match the job description, over-tuning your resume for every application can be a waste of time — and end up slowing down your search. This is especially true if you’re focused on securing a particular position that has a standard job title like “marketing coordinator” or “sales associate.” The third is overdesigning your resume. Recruiters only spend a few seconds scanning it, so keep the format simple and straightforward. The fourth is coming off as a novice. For example, don’t use an ancient email address — update it to something that sounds more professional, and give your resume a specific name so it’s easier to identify.

Resumes. Love them or hate them, you will probably need one when you apply for a job. The resume has a specific tactical role to play in your search — to get you the interview. You need to make sure it checks a few boxes to do that work because, even if you take advantage of your network, sooner or later, you will need to share your resume with the hiring manager.

Website screenshot for Resume Genius

2. ResumeGenius

A site with a name like ResumeGenius must step up if it’s going to live up to its moniker, and this resume builder does the job in terms of quality and features.

ResumeGenius starts the process by deploying dozens of different CV templates. There are plenty of good-looking resumes available here, although they do veer towards the conventional – you’ll find plenty of traditional resumes but few graphics-heavy modern options.

You can fill out your resume with more than 50,000 pre-written bullet points. They cover all industries and mean you can sound as professional as possible. You can download your resume as a Word document or PDF, and the site also has a cover letter builder and tools that can help you with resignation letters, thank-you notes, and letters of recommendation.

This site doesn’t have the in-depth options of many others, but it’s a free tool that can quickly produce a professional resume – and that makes it worth using.

Website screenshot for CakeResume

3. CakeResume

CakeResume uses an intuitive and straightforward drag-and-drop interface to make resume creation easier, even for users who may not be particularly savvy when using technology.

The interface allows you to customize your layout, elements, and information quickly, and CakeResume pairs this intelligent user experience with a range of attractive and impressive templates. You can download your resume at any point in the creation process, which is handy for checking your progress or getting feedback from others.

You can download your finished resume as a PDF for free, but you’re only allowed to create one basic resume using the free service. With the Advanced plan, you can use more than twenty premium resume designs as often as you want, and you can remove the CakeResume branding from your finished CV. The Pro option allows you to track your resume using Google Analytics and share the finished product using a custom domain name.

CakeResume is fast, easy to use, and has loads of attractive and straightforward resume templates. Still, it’s only worth considering if you’re willing to buy one of the paid options – the free tier is minimal.

Website screenshot for Reed.co.uk

4. Reed.co.uk

Reed.co.uk is a UK-focused site that offers a resume creation tool as part of its wider set of employment features, like job listings, skills modules, and career advice articles.

You start to create a resume when you register your account, and the site takes you through a simple four-step process to create a basic resume. You add your personal information, work experience, and qualifications alongside a personal statement, and then your basic resume will be available for download as a Word document. You can also make it visible on Reed.co.uk’s wider website so it’s easy for employers to view.

You can download Reed’s Word template to do it all yourself if you’d prefer, and your resume and profile are linked – so you can add more experience, qualifications, and information alongside information about your skills and job hunting journey. It’s a free service, and it’s a welcome addition to this popular job site, but be aware that you don’t get to use sophisticated templates or advanced design elements here.

Website screenshot for Novoresume

5. Novoresume

Novoresume deploys dozens of different resume templates to help you find the perfect job. They’re all created in conjunction with experienced recruiters, and they’re applicable to loads of different career paths and industries.

You can choose to start with a traditional template, a professional design that includes a photograph or a creative template, and you’ll find other templates that offer a simple, modern, and professional range of designs.

Those templates are a suitable place to start, and Novoresume aims to go further with its extra features. You can use cover letter templates alongside the resume templates. This site has an AI -powered analysis service that suggests resume improvements as you tweak the layout and enter your information.

It’s an intuitive and effective site with straightforward features, and you can use the Basic tier to create a free resume.

The Premium option allows you to use a broader range of fonts and colors, add special sections and graphics to your resume, create more resumes and deploy distinctive styles and templates. That’s all welcome, but this is one of the better sites if you want to create a free resume – it’s not particularly restrictive.

Website screenshot for Resume Help

6. ResumeHelp

ResumeHelp is the perfect resume builder to use if you’re not particularly confident with written English, or if it’s not your first language.

This site allows you to create a resume with confidence by inserting pre-written bullet points that emphasize your strengths without focusing on potentially tricky linguistic errors. There are thousands of points that can work in all sorts of resumes, so you won’t be short of things to say, and you’ll also receive help from extra tips as you build your resume.

The site has fifteen different templates available. The designs focus on more traditional, conventional layouts, so this site is ideal if you want to put together a classic, familiar resume. You can customize all the information as you go through the process, upload an old resume to kickstart your new document, and it’s free to download the document after you’re finished.

The upgrade plans are cheap, too: you can buy two weeks of access or a month of access and that plan means you can create more resumes, use more templates, and build cover letters too.

Website screenshot for CVmaker

CVmaker is one of the easiest resume builders to use, so it’s an ideal choice if you want to put together a resume quickly and without any fuss.

Creating a resume on CVmaker is simple. The site uses a step-by-step process to gather information about your work experience, education, interests, and references. When that’s done you can switch the design between a selection of different styles and download the document for your use in job applications. You can also add your own sections to the resume, which is a feature that isn’t available on some other sites.

CVmaker is a simple tool, though, especially in its free guise – at this point it’s fine for building a basic resume, but that’s it. If you upgrade to the site’s premium tier you can add more custom sections, use better templates and take advantage of an advanced text editor. It only requires a one-off payment, so it’s one of the cheapest paid resume builder options available.

VisualCV website screenshot

8. VisualCV

VisualCV is one of the most powerful and versatile resume-building websites around. The process begins with loads of attractive and modern templates that offer more color and visual pop than most other resume building tools, and once you’ve chosen the right look, you’re able to customize each resume to properly suit your needs.

This site goes far beyond resume building. You can use advanced resume tracking to see when your document has been viewed or downloaded, and you can access free guides, blog posts, and articles if you need some extra help. You can import data from LinkedIn to make CV building easier and consult cover letter templates too.

VisualCV allows you to easily share your resume with family and friends for quick feedback, and it has more privacy options than most resume builders, so your information is more secure.

This site’s free package allows you to create one resume using a single template and then download it, but it will have VisualCV branding that can’t be removed. The Pro option gives you more templates and the ability to create an unlimited number of resumes.

Website screenshot for Resume.io

9. Resume.io

Resume.io is one of the broadest resume sites on the internet, with a massive range of features that offer impressive quality in every department.

As with any other resume builder, you can quickly use an attractive template to produce a rock-solid CV using Resume.io. This site also benefits from thousands of pre-written phrases alongside automatic spell checking and the ability to export your file in any format you choose.

Elsewhere, this site deploys cover letter templates too. You can also generate automatic summaries for your documents, access recruitment tips, and track any applications that have used the documents you create on the site.

If you use Resume.io for free, you can create a resume and cover letter and share links to those files with prospective employers, but you can only download the resume as a basic text file. If you buy its professional plan, you can create an unlimited number of resumes and cover letters using the site’s full library of tools. That’s the option we’d recommend.

KickResume website screenshot

10. KickResume

KickResume places a big emphasis on easy resume creation, and it includes loads of different tools that will simplify the process and help you avoid common pitfalls.

This site serves up more than fifty professional templates that cover traditional and modern design alongside many key jobs and industries. The site has more than 20,000 pre-written phrases that can be slotted into your resume – perfect if you want to include professional language in a quick and straightforward fashion.

You can view resumes that have helped candidates land jobs at companies like Facebook, NASA, and Google . KickResume has in-built proofreading alongside a cover letter builder.

It’s free to create four resumes using KickResume, and you can have a basic website and get access to the full library of pre-written phrases too – this is one of the more generous options for free resume creation. But if you upgrade to the Pro plan, you’ll get more templates, full customization options and AI resume review alongside priority support.

Website screenshot for Zety

Zety prides itself on its speed and ease of use, and there's certainly lots to like here: users can build a comprehensive and attractive resume with more than 20 templates, and you can upload your existing CV or add new information to get a document produced within minutes.

The site's resume generation tool delivers context-sensitive tips from professional recruiters as you create your document, and once it's done you can tweak the file with extensive editing options.

Zety has a cover letter builder alongside its resume tools, and users can also access resume and cover letter templates. The site also explains which resume formats are best-suited to different industries and employment situations, and Zety's extensive blog has in-depth articles about resumes, cover letters, and loads of other employment topics.

It's free to build a resume on Zety, but you'll have to pay if you want to download that file in different formats and access the site's full range of features. Happily, it's affordable.

Website screenshot for Indeed

Indeed is one of the largest and most reliable job boards on the web. It offers job listings, great options for employers, and impressive salary data and career advice – and, alongside all of that, it’s got a great resume builder.

Once you’ve registered and verified your account you’ll be ready to get started, and Indeed’s resume builder is pleasingly straightforward. There are eight clean, modern templates to use, and users can deploy a small selection of different accent colors and fonts to personalize the document. It’s easy to type in your personal details, education history and previous employment, and Indeed suggests relevant skills that you can add to the document with a single click.

Once you’ve added those and any extra professional certifications, the basic resume is finished, and you’re given a preview of the document alongside the option to add sections for languages, website links, awards, community achievements and more.

You can make the document public or private – if you choose the former, it can help you apply for jobs on Indeed.com – and you can also download the resume as a PDF file if you’d like to use it for applications elsewhere. And, if you don’t want to use Indeed’s full resume builder, you can use a wizard to create a basic document with a step-by-step process.

It’s extremely easy to edit your resume and add information after you’ve been through the initial creation process, and a personalized link is also available if you want to share the document with other people online. And, if you pay extra, Indeed.com also offers resume reviews.

Indeed.com’s resume builder is basic compared to many of the others mentioned here – you don’t get as many editing and layout options as other sites. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, because it means that Indeed.com can quickly and easily create an effective resume that contains all the information that recruiters need – and, as an added bonus, it’s completely free.

What is a resume builder?

Resume builders are online apps that offer interactive templates and forms for swiftly building a seamless resume. While some resume builders need you to fill out all the information manually, some provide relevant pre-written phrases and allow you to import data.

You'll find various free and paid resume builders online.

How to choose the best resume builders for you?

To determine the best resume builder for yourself, start with considering whether you want a free or paid option and all the areas you need support with — design, content, or review. If you have your content ready and just need a tool to set up a cohesive and attractive resume, go with a resume builder that offers lovely templates and allows you to import data.

If you need help with the content, check out builders that offer context-relevant insights and pre-written phrases. For those who want further assistance in reviewing the quality of their resume, you’ll want to opt for a builder that has a review or consultation service.

We tested many resume builders to select the best resume builders. We looked at their pricing plans — whether they were free, subscription-based, or if they had one-time payment options. We evaluated the variety of templates they had, the quality of their designs, the level of customizability they offered, and if there were data-importing options.

We considered whether they offered pre-written phrases and context-relevant tips, if there was a review service, and how straightforward the interface and resume-building process was. We also analyzed their customer service to check how prompt, helpful, and customer-oriented they were.

State regulators approve puget sound energy to resume credit and collections processes with modifications.

Media Contact:  [email protected]  or 360-664-1125 Docket Numbers: UE-220066 and UG-220067 (Consolidated)

Modifications include increased outreach and education about energy assistance programs

LACEY, Wash. – Today, state regulators approved Puget Sound Energy’s request to resume its credit and collections practices with modifications. The company paused its collections practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The modifications require PSE to conduct targeted outreach to all customers with a balance above $250 that is more than 90 days overdue. Outreach must include telephone or written communication to customers that includes information about bill assistance, payment management, and other programs that the customer may be eligible for without threatening disconnection. PSE will also identify and refer customers to local Community Action Agencies for additional assistance.

The order states that if a customer fails to take action with PSE or a local Community Action Agency regarding their past-due balance within 30 days of the customer communication, PSE may place the customer on a phased debt collection plan, known as dunning. Disconnections for non-payment are limited to customers with at least $250 of unpaid, overdue bills.

As of October 2023, PSE reported a total of $140 million in unpaid, overdue balances.

The commission approved PSE to resume credit and collections processes to address the significant cost of overdue balances and the potential impact if the total unpaid balances were distributed to all customers for recovery.  The order recognizes the importance of providing extensive protection and resources for customers who need assistance to pay their energy bills.

However, to mitigate the impact on vulnerable customers, the commission determined that unpaid, overdue balances that occurred during the COVID-19 disconnection moratorium, spanning from March 2020 through Dec. 2021, will not be recovered from individual customers. Instead, the order notes that PSE may recover these costs through its rates.

The modified practices go into effect immediately.

The order emphasizes that the commission expects, “PSE and all other utilities to prioritize principles of energy justice, afford meaningful opportunities for public participation, and conduct thorough equity analyses when developing credit and collections policies that could disproportionately harm already vulnerable populations.”

Additionally, the order states that “achieving equitable access to essential utility services is a vital public interest that must be central to our regulation of customer arrearages, disconnections, and affordability programs. While this order allows a limited resumption of the dunning process, our work to advance energy justice and equitable utility practices is far from complete.”

Background Information

On Dec. 22, 2022, the commission approved Final Order 24/10 in Docket UE-220066 . In the order, PSE agreed to continue its existing credit and collections processes until the conclusion of the commission proceeding being conducted in Docket U-210800 .

As part of this agreement, PSE did not conduct targeted outreach or disconnect customers unless their past-due balance exceeded $1,000, and they were not considered to be an estimated low-income or known low-income customer. PSE limited targeted outreach and collections practices to customers with past-due balances greater than $1,000.

Bellevue-based PSE provides electricity service to more than 1.1 million electric customers in eight Washington counties: Island, King, Kitsap, Kittitas, Pierce, Skagit, Thurston, and Whatcom. PSE also provides natural gas service to more than 800,000 customers in six Washington counties: King, Kittitas, Lewis, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston.

The UTC is the state agency that regulates private, investor-owned electric and natural gas utilities in Washington. It is the commission’s responsibility to ensure regulated companies provide equitable, safe, and reliable service to customers at reasonable rates, while allowing them the opportunity to earn a fair profit.

WEATHER ALERT

5 warnings and 2 advisories in effect for 25 regions in the area

Is your new vehicle so soundproof it’s preventing you from hearing emergency vehicles.

Gage Goulding , News Reporter , Houston, TX

Oscar Chavez , Photojournalist

James Perry

Jason Nguyen , KPRC 2 Senior Investigates Producer

HOUSTON – It’s no secret that Houstonians aren’t known to be the best drivers.

But how about this question - Do our driving habits on the road keep first responders from saving lives?

All drivers should know that when you see lights and hear sirens, you need to move over.

However, the reality is - we aren’t doing that.

What Is The Move Over Law?

In 2003, the State of Texas enacted a new law with the nickname “The Move Over Law.”

The rules are pretty clear in the name of the law. Drivers are required to move over when they see emergency crews on the side of the road.

“In Texas, it was enacted in 2003, but in 2023, they actually made the penalties harsher for violators,” explained Tess Rowland with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “For a first-time offense, you could face a fine of up to $1,250. And for an offense that involves serious bodily injury to another, you could be paying as much as $4,000, and even potentially face jail time.”

The beefed-up version of the law introduced to drivers in 2023, not only requires motorists to move over for emergency responders but anyone with their lights on, including TxDOT workers, sanitation crews and more.

If you’re driving down the road and see a vehicle stopped with warning lights on, you are required by Texas law to vacate the nearest lane (or “move over”). If you can’t get over, you need to reduce your speed to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.

“It’s so important because, ultimately, we need to protect those who protect you,” Rowland said.

Does this sound familiar to other states you’ve driven through? It’s because all 50 states have adopted the Move Over Law to some degree.

“The fines and penalties vary from state to state, but the bottom line is the same,” Rowland said. “You see those flashing lights? Do you see that vehicle that is stopped on the roadway? Simply move over.”

  • Death toll from Houston-area storms jumps to 8 people; Here’s what we know about the victims, how they died

It’s this very law that was enacted to help save the lives of those working on the road or responding to roadside emergencies.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office recently lost one of its own when someone didn’t move over during a traffic accident investigation.

Deputy John Coddou was killed when a truck veered off the road and hit him in April.

“It’s frustrating because at the end of the day, you know, this is our life on the line,” said Deputy Mohammad Amad, an accident investigator with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s sad to know that people have no regard and no respect for our life.”

KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding joined Deputy Amad for a ride along to see first-hand how Houston drivers are adding an avoidable risk to deputies’ work enforcing traffic laws.

In the two hours our cameras were rolling, Houston drivers didn’t move over for officers stopped on the side of the road.

Deputy Amad had to wait to open his door to get out of his patrol car because vehicles were speeding by in the lane closest to his car.

  • Houston police officer arrested off-duty after rollover crash, illegal gun, no seatbelt

One driver Deputy Amad pulled over didn’t move over for another deputy who was on a traffic stop.

“He hasn’t slowed down to 20,” Deputy Amad explained as he pulled the pickup truck over.

Deputy Amad: “Hello, sir. How are you doing? I’m Deputy Amad with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, can I get your driver’s license and proof of insurance? Okay, Mr. Clark, are you familiar with the move-over law?

Driver: “Uhhh. No.”

Little did Mr. Clark know, he wasn’t going home with a ticket, but rather an education.

Deputy Amad: “Mr. Clark, before I let you go. What’s the move law again?”

Driver: “Reduce speed and get over. If you can’t get over, reduce your speed, whatever the posted speed limit is, down by 20.

Yielding To Emergency Vehicles

It’s not just moving over for vehicles with flashing lights on the side of the road. Texas law also requires drivers to get out of the way for emergency vehicles responding with lights and sirens on.

“If you hear lights and sirens, somebody needs help and we’re trying to get to them,” said Marty Lancton, President of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association.

It’s not uncommon for Houston firefighters to be caught up in traffic while the person needing their help is forced to wait.

The Houston Fire Department allowed KPRC 2 inside their engine responding to calls to see firsthand.

“Clear over there? Clear, right,” asked the engineer.

“Hey, you got a car on your left. There it goes. There it goes,” said the captain of the truck.

Someone not paying attention or simply in too much of a hurry to yield to an emergency vehicle kept driving along the street, forcing the fire engine to come to a complete stop for several seconds with its lights on and sirens blaring.

“The ability for emergency apparatus, to get past you is not because somebody likes to play with lights and sirens,” Lancton said. “It has real consequences.”

In another instance, a dashcam video shows a Houston Fire Department ladder truck going the wrong way down a street to get around backed up and stopped traffic.

Each of these instances costs firefighters and EMS teams valuable seconds in their response time.

A fire can double in size every 30 seconds.

When someone is having a heart attack, brain cells can start dying after just five minutes.

“The survivability goes considerably down every second and every delay that it takes us to get to The people they call 911,” Lancton said.

Is Your Vehicle Snuffing Our Sirens?

While distractions like your phone and radio play a factor, the vehicle you drive might also be to blame.

Studies show newer cars come with better soundproofing, which can snuff out the sound of sirens .

Could your car be part of a problem?

We put several vehicles to the test, including a Tesla, which is marketed to be a quiet cabin.

Our test started with getting a baseline sound reading of a Houston Fire Department siren from 50 feet away outside of a vehicle. That reading was 95.2db.

We tested four different vehicles, each with different model years and styles, to learn how the siren was impacted by the build and soundproofing of the vehicles.

The loudest of all the vehicles was the Tesla Model 3, which measured the siren at 43.2 db. The quietest was the Chevy Tahoe, which measured the siren at 38.5 db.

Our test opposes what other studies say in regards to newer cars being more soundproof.

However, every vehicle cut the sound of the siren in half, meaning with the radio and AC turned up, you likely wouldn’t hear the siren from 50 feet away.

Gage: “Is there a way to combat the noise cancellation issue?”

Marty: “You know, I think it really gets back to whether the driver was paying attention to their surroundings.”
