Standard entry requirements

Completion of the Murdoch University Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies OR Comparable programs from other institutions (e.g. Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies) may be eligible following assessment of previous course content by the Academic chair. Applicants from institutions other than Murdoch will also need to provide: Academic records – certificate of marks, Reference of suitability from previous institution, Provision of Unit guides for assessment of content and learning outcomes of nominated units. The selection process for all applicants includes a creative practice portfolio and interviews for shortlisted candidates. A maximum of 24 credit points of recognised prior learning may be granted to those applications who have completed equivalent coursework. If the recognised prior learning is equivalent to 12 credit points or less an amended offer for the Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies may be made. Applications will be assessed by the Academic Chair and suitable applicants will be offered an interview.

Minimum English Requirements

  • A scaled score of 50% or more in ATAR English, English Literature or English as a Second Language (or interstate equivalent).
  • An Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall score of 6.0 (with no band below 6.0) or equivalent scores for the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, TOEFL iBT or the Occupational English Test (OET).
  • Successful completion of a University enabling course (e.g. OnTrack, FlexiTrack).
  • A score of 140 or more in the Written English component of the STAT test
  • Successful completion of either a Diploma (AQF Level 5 or higher) OR two University-level units (AQF Level 7 or higher).

For admission into one of our postgraduate degrees, you must provide evidence of the successful completion of a relevant degree from a recognised university, in addition to meeting Murdoch’s prescribed English Language requirements. At a minimum, to qualify for one of our postgraduate degrees, you must meet one of the following requirements.

About this course.

Artists have been using art to express themselves for centuries - Vincent Van Gogh famously used his art to cope with mental illness throughout his life, and Edvard Munch is widely regarded to have inspired a whole movement of expressionism in art connecting to mood and internal emotional life.

Modern science and psychology has helped to uncover the benefits of creative arts in promoting positive mental health outcomes. There is growing evidence about the power the artistic process has to help us connect with emotions and experiences, and by doing so face life's dilemmas.

Learn how expression through the arts can be used to enhance the therapeutic process by using a person-centred framework. You'll learn the newly-emerging theory in this area of counselling, combined with hands-on experience that will build your counselling skills.

While this course has proven beneficial for counsellors to work with clients to express themselves, if you're a teacher, social worker, chaplain, psychologist, or youth worker, you'll also be able to apply the skills you learn in your current role. Students who complete the Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapies may apply for admission to the Masters of Counselling and will be exempt from the units already completed which are common to both degrees.

This course offers valuable benefits for counsellors in helping their clients express themselves. Teachers, social workers, chaplains, psychologists, or youth workers, can also apply the skills acquired in this course to their current role. Students who complete the Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts can also pursue admission to the Master of Counselling program, with the advantage of exemption from the units already completed that are shared between both degrees.

Work settings include schools, hospitals, aged care, crisis centres, wellness centres, detention facilities, remand facilities and addiction treatment. Experienced professionals may also utilise art therapy in private practice.

Combined with your existing experience and qualifications, your career as a Creative Arts Therapist can begin anywhere and be used in any role where building relationships is a key component. Your skills can be applied in roles such as:

You do not need to have any art experience or be creative to benefit from our creative arts therapies service. Our therapists are there to guide you and support you to find comfortable ways to express yourself in a safe environment.

Our counsellors and therapists

Murdoch University postgraduate students enrolled in the Master of Counselling and Master of Creative Arts Therapies provide services under the supervision of our experienced and qualified staff.

We charge $30 per visit and $15 for concession card holders.

Fees may be waived at the discretion of the clinic supervisor.
