A sitemap is a file that serves as a blueprint for a website, outlining its structure and providing crucial information about its various pages and media files.

Essentially an XML or HTML document , a sitemap contains a list of URLs corresponding to the pages on a website, along with additional metadata like the last modification date and the frequency of updates.

This file facilitates search engine crawlers in efficiently navigating and indexing a website’s content, enhancing its visibility on search engine results pages.

In addition to pages, a comprehensive sitemap may also include information about media files, ensuring that images, videos and other assets are appropriately recognized and cataloged by search engines, ultimately contributing to a more effective online presence.

A visual sitemap is a graphical representation or diagram that illustrates the structure and organization of a website.

Like the blueprints for a building, a visual sitemap helps you picture the content, hierarchy and navigation of a website. Visual sitemaps are generally in the form of a hierarchical diagram.

Just as a blueprint is more functional than beautiful, a visual sitemap serves several important functions in web development , including:

• Establishing the website structure , sections and navigation
• Explaining relationships between sections or content
• Enabling designers and developers to see duplicate sections or gaps in content

That’s not to say your visual sitemap has to be ugly. Quite the contrary; we think if you’re going to make a visual sitemap, you might as well make it look nice.

Especially if you’re presenting new navigation or hierarchy for your website to your stakeholders or management, you don’t want your visual sitemap to be lackluster and fail to capture their attention.

You can also use the creation of your visual sitemap as an opportunity to reinforce your brand identity, including your colors and icon styles.

What should be in a sitemap?

Your visual site map does not necessarily have to list every single page that will be included in your website. However, that’s possible in some cases, particularly if the site and company are new and not much content has been created.

Visual sitemaps differ from two other common types of sitemaps, XML and HTML, which are both more technical than visual sitemaps. Here are key differences between the three:

HTML sitemap example

An HTML sitemap is essentially a clickable list of pages on a site, and it’s an alternative way for visitors to navigate website, as the HTML site map example above (for the New York Times homepage) illustrates.

XML sitemap example

This is a code-based list of URLs on a website used by search engines to deliver results when someone searches for particular keywords. It’s obviously much less approachable for the average person because it’s designed for computers.

Generate a Web site map

If you manage a Web site's day-to-day operations, you know it's vital to have a clear picture of the site's overall structure and flow, track development changes, and monitor and repair broken hyperlinks. You can do all these tasks and more with the Web Site Map in Visio Professional or Visio Plan 2.

Start Visio.

In the Software and Database template/category, click Web Site Map .

Do one of the following:

If the Web site is on an HTTP server, in the Address box, enter the address of the Web site you want to map.

If the Web site is on a network server or a local hard drive, click Browse , navigate to the file you want at the root of your site map, and then click Open .

Note:  For best results, enter a full path and file name. For example, enter http://www.contoso.com/default.asp rather than http://www.contoso.com .

Review the maximum number of levels and number of links that will be discovered.

To customize your Web site discovery, click Settings and do any of the following:

On the Layout tab, change the layout style of the Web site map, such as number of how many levels you want discovered or whether the drawing shows a Compact tree or a Flowchart .

On the Extensions tab, select the type of files (such as a .doc, .jpg, or .exe) that you want to map.

On the Protocols tab, select the protocols (such as mailto, ftp, or NNTP) that you want to map.

On the Attributes tab, select the HTML attributes (such as HREF, SRC, or CODE) that you want to search for links.

On the Advanced tab, select options that further refine your search criteria.

In the Generate Site Map dialog box, click OK .

A progress dialog box appears while the Web Site Map template generates the memory model and lays out your site map.

To realign or redistribute the links on the drawing page, on the Shape menu, click Lay Out Shapes .

Automatically check your site for errors

Keeping your site's links active and error-free is the most critical Web site management task.

When you map your site, Visio follows each link within the parameters you've specified and tracks any errors it encounters. The links with errors appear on the site map, in the Filter window, and in the List window as shapes with red Xs through them. The Filter and List windows are docked and collapsed on the left side of the drawing window.

Note:  If you can't see these windows, click the Web Site Map tab on the ribbon, and select the check boxes next to List Window or Filter Window .

You can quickly generate a list of the broken links with their associated errors to help you keep track of your work and make the necessary repairs.

Create a report of links with errors on your site

Open the site map for which you want to create an error report.

On the ribbon, click the Web Site Map tab, and then click Create Report .

Select a report type that you want to run and then click Run .

Select what kind of file (such as Excel or XML) you want the information saved to, and then click OK .

Visio creates a report listing all the links that have hyperlink errors.

Note:  If your report opens in a program outside of Visio, such as Excel, name and save the report.

Fix broken links

Some broken links are caused by timeout errors. To resolve those errors, right-click the link, and then click Refresh or Refresh Parent of Hyperlink .

Other broken links are caused by Site Not Found, Access Denied, or Password Required, or by incorrect file names, incorrect file locations, and missing files, which can trigger a 404 or File Not Found error message. Any of these will need to be fixed in your Web site.

Your Web site and the Web site map are not dynamically linked; changing one does not automatically affect the other. After you fix a broken link on the Web site, you can update the site map by right-clicking the shape representing the broken link, and then clicking Refresh Hyperlink . The red X disappears.

Keep track of changes to your site

If you have several developers working on your site, tracking their work can quickly become a full-time task. Using the Web Site Map comparison report, you can compare two versions of your site to quantify the changes made over a given period of time. The report compares the two versions and generates a list of differences. It not only identifies the links that appear in only one of the maps, but also lists the following link changes in both maps:

Error status

File modification date

For example, suppose you want to quantify the work done on the site each week. Simply map the site at the start of the week and again at the end. Then compare the two maps to generate a report of the changes. You can also measure the report against a schedule of work planned for the week to see if your Web site project is on target.

Compare Web site maps

Open the most recent map of your Web site.

On the Web Site Map tab, click Compare to document .

Browse to the Web site map you want to compare with, select the file, and then click Open .

Visio compares the two maps and generates an HTML report listing the differences.

Name and save the report.

Use Microsoft PowerPoint to create Site maps

In my last blog called the Benefits of Sitemaps. Irishredrose asked How do you use PowerPoint to make a Flow Chart?

So now I'm following on from her question. I sent her a YouTube link but thought it would be a good idea to show you how I did this today, using one of my websites as an example.

Here are the basic steps to creating your Sitemap as a presentation as a follow on from number 3 in my last blog.

1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint

2. Choose a design (I chose wisp for this exercise)

3. select create. Now you have your first blank slide

4. Click to add the title in the box

5. Click to add a tag line of your business in the second box; see the example below. That's great you have now added your first title page.

6. Now click on New Slide

7. Add a name at the top such as "Home Page" in the box Click to add Title

8. Click in the Second box and GO TO Insert, then click on Smartart

9 Select Hierarchy

10. I chose the 5th one to the right on the top row for this exercise, but feel free to chose what suits you. Have a play.

After I selected the 5th one, this is how it looks below.

To the left, you will see a little box. This is where you will add your details. The top one I name HomePage and HomePage in the heading Title. To have your boxes in one line, use the left or right arrow to move the boxes underneath to the top use an up arrow and vice versa.

This is my first Primary Chart

I have Relevant information on my sidebar as widgets and other details in the Footer area on my website.

This is just the beginning.

I inserted a new slide, and I called it getting started. This area is for general details on how to get started at WA or setting up a business.

I think you get the gist of it.

For each category, I have a new slide that lists my posts. When I look at it, I can see which posts I want to link with each other.

There are plenty of free site map programs on the Internet that might be better for creating internal links between posts.

Wonderful tip. Thanks for sharing. I use MS PowerPoint everyday for my students. I co-teach a class an online Deaf Culture and American Sign Language class as I am Deaf myself. I just learned how to create a collage and an infographic to show my students. I did try Canva for designing an infographic. Guess what? I did not like it. It was a bit hard to do. MS PowerPoint was much easier to use and user friendly. I designed the infographic and posted it on D2L for the students to see and the screen shots like you did giving them step by step on how to do it for their upcoming project. This is a great idea on how to create a site map. Awesomeness!

Insert maps

Recently PowerPoint created the feature of creating a map in the program itself. This tool is very powerful but since it's quite new, some bugs occur from time to time. Nevertheless, here is how you quickly add a map to your slides:

• Click in the menu bar on Insert > Chart .
• A window pops up. Select Map and click OK .

• PowerPoint creates a default world map and opens a table in which you can write any other country names and values. PowerPoint will automatically change the map as soon as you change values.

• When you are finished, click on the X of the Excel table to close it. Attention! Until now, PowerPoint allows only 13 different countries. If you add more, they will get ignored. You can add names of continents, countries, regions and postcodes.
• To re-open the Excel table and change anything later as well: Right click on the map and choose "Edit Data" or click on the map and choose Chart Design > Edit Data in the menu ribbon.

Edit the layout of the map to your preferences

As said before, PowerPoint lets us choose between mapping the world or only a continent, focus on a country or using postcodes to draw regions and areas. Keep in mind, that combining different levels might not always work, for example when a city is too small to be seen on a world map.

You can add, remove or change chart elements by selecting the map and clicking on the plus symbol in the right, upper corner. Here you can choose between showing the title, data labels or legend and on which position they should appear.

Moreover, you can use the Design and Format Tabs in the menu to get to the editing tools or double click onto the map. Pay attention on which part of graphic you click on, since the formatting task pane refers to exactly those objects. (Format Chart Area, Format Plot Area or Format Data Series)

To move the map, just click on it and drag it by the graphics border to your desired place. To resize it: Click on its corners and move the mouse. (click Shift at the same time, to maintain the graphics proportions)

PowerPoint offers numerous ways to edit your map, so play around with the tools to create your favourite graphic. For example, you can hide countries without a data value or change the map projection. (The proportions of world maps)

Select your favourite colours

Think about the colour scheme for your whole PowerPoint presentation. A specific scheme for all slides makes the whole presentation easier to follow and your slides will perfectly harmonize together. There are different ways to change your graphics colour depending on, if you want to include the data to your colour plan or if you want to adjust each colour manually.

Use a default colour scheme:

• First, select your map
• Go to Design and click on Change Colours
• Here you can use any of those schemes which consider the inserted data and can go from the brightest to the darkest colour

Task pane: Format Data Series:

• Double click onto the map to open the Format Data Series menu
• Open the Series Colour tool and choose your minimum and maximum colour of decision

Individual colours:

• Select individual countries or parts (they have to be highlighted)
• Choose Fill and optionally Outline . You can also change the "weight" and "dashes"" of the outline
• If you click onto the maps background, you can also change the background colour of the map (makes sense for an island)

Fill all parts with the same colour

• If you have only one country, it makes sense to fill it with a single colour. This can be done with the method explained before (Individual colours) or by selecting your map and going to the chart menu Format > Shape Fill
• As before, you will find the same tools and options to change your objects, colour, outline or even effect (shadow,...)

Tips for PowerPoint maps and charts

• Since you can only add 13 individual countries to a map, PPT quickly comes to its limits. Use Excel if you want to create more complex maps and copy the finished map to your slides.
• If you insert a country's name into the table, PPT ignores the lines between each states and draws only the large country. To add the lines, simply insert two federal- state names instead of the country's name and it will draw each single state.

• The feature of drawing maps is relatively new, PowerPoint sometimes has problems to draw the map. You might have to delete a graphic and start again but the result will pay, so don't give up! Save your project from time to time to avoid the loss of a lot of work.

How to Create an Interactive Map in PowerPoint [Template Inside]

3. Select Map in the list of charts, and then click OK .

4. You’ll see a world map inserted into the slide and an Excel spreadsheet pop-up in which you can enter the data you need (e.g., countries, states, provinces) and the color saturation for each map object on a numerical scale. The higher the number, the more saturated the color.

As an example, let’s try to map the countries around the globe with the largest population in mid-2022 (from Statista ). To do this, enter the countries’ names and their populations:

Note : By default, a PowerPoint map has 12 rows for adding locations in an Excel spreadsheet. If you need to display more geographic objects, you can easily expand this limit to the number of locations you need. Our table has 21 rows, so we need to expand to 21.

5. To do that, click on Select Data in the Design tab. In the opened window, expand the number of countries to the required ones in the line “=Sheet1!$A$1:$B$ [your number] ” and click on OK .

6. Perfect! All the countries are displayed on the map and colored according to their populations.

7. Now you can add a map title. Click on Chart Title above the map and enter its name:

Perfect! The interactive map is ready.

In PowerPoint, when you select Map from the Charts section, the default setting displays a world map. However, you have the flexibility to focus on a more specific region. 

For example, if you want to create a color-coded U.S. map on, let’s say, the number of automobile registrations in different states, you can easily narrow your map down to just this one country: 

1. To do that, once the world map is inserted into your slide, go ahead and delete any filled-in lines that appear by default in the Excel pop-up. 

2. Type in the names of U.S. states along with the corresponding numerical data. As you begin to enter the names of the U.S. states, PowerPoint will recognize that your focus is on a single country and will automatically adjust to display a map solely of the United States.

3. Don’t forget to expand the number of rows to the number you need. We’re going to display 35 U.S. states, so we need to expand the number of rows to 36 (1 header row and 35 data rows). To do this, as we did in the previous example, click on Select Data , type “36,” and click on OK :

Fantastic! The color-coded U.S. map is ready:

PowerPoint offers a range of customization options to tweak the appearance of your map, including changing the map layout and color palette. To do that, simply go to the Design tab on the PowerPoint ribbon and select the options you wish to modify:

By clicking on the “ + ” symbol located to the right of the map, you’ll reveal additional editing settings that enable you to display data directly on the map, add shadows, move the map legend, fill in the background, and more. For our example, we added some shadows and labeled the states to enhance the visual impact. Here’s the result:

Sometimes you might need to add a map to your presentations very quickly and display a certain location in an interactive manner. Filling out Excel spreadsheets can take hours and is sometimes absolutely unnecessary. So, you may want to just insert the actual geographic map. 

In this section, you’ll learn how to do that with a couple of clicks using iSpring Suite , the robust PowerPoint-based authoring tool:

1. To begin, download iSpring Suite . The software has a 14-day free trial, so you can explore its features without any commitment. Simply install it on your computer to get started.

2. Once the software is installed, the iSpring Suite tab automatically appears in the PowerPoint ribbon.

3. Select a PowerPoint presentation slide to which you want to add a map and click on the Web Object button in the Insert section. This option allows you to insert any web page, whether it is your website, an article, or a training manual published on the web. To display a geographic location, you can insert a Google Map.

4. Go to the Google Maps website and find a specific location you want to display on your map. Press the Share button → Embed a map → and click on Copy HTML .

5. Go back to your presentation. In the Insert Web Object window, select Embed code in the menu, insert the link, and click OK .

6. In the iSpring Suite tab, select Preview → Preview from This Slide to see the map.

Done! You’ve embedded the New York map in your presentation. Now you can zoom in, zoom out, and interact with the map to showcase specific boroughs and landmarks as needed.

How to Visually Enhance an Interactive Map

With iSpring Suite, you can not only embed a map, but also add different backgrounds to create a more immersive atmosphere. 

1. To do that, click on Backgrounds in the Content Library section on the iSpring Suite tab. There you’ll find lots of locations, from devices to office settings and school environments.

2. In the opened window, select an appropriate background and click on Insert .

3. After you’ve inserted the background, right-click on it and click on Send to Back → Send Backward .

4. Adjust the size of your web object to the size of the whiteboard:

5. Perfect! Now it looks like an actual geography class. To add a personal touch, let’s insert a teacher. Click on Characters in the Content Library section and choose an appropriate one from thousands of real-life or illustrated characters:

6. Then press the Add to Slide button and click on Preview to see the final result.

Great! To publish the entire presentation, click on Publish in the iSpring Suite tab on the PowerPoint ribbon. If you want to publish your PowerPoint presentation online, select My Computer in the drop-down menu on the left pane. If you want to distribute your slides via an LMS as a SCORM file, click on LMS, then click on Publish .

In addition to inserting a real geographic map into your PowerPoint slide, iSpring Suite offers another possibility to create interactive maps with a Hotspot interaction. All you need to do is add an image to your PowerPoint slide and draw spots on it that will be highlighted when the mouse passes over them. You can add a description to each region and choose its shape and color. 

This allows you to create a map of any location and add a description to provinces, landmarks, or important cities, as in this example of a map of the United Kingdom:

While we often associate interactive maps with geographic data, the term actually extends far beyond that. With iSpring Suite, you can make any static image dynamic. 

For example, you could create anatomy diagrams to enhance medical or educational PowerPoint presentations about the human body. Alternatively, you might design a comprehensive infographic, wherein each point reveals additional facts when clicked. You could also display artwork, allowing viewers to explore different parts of a famous painting to learn more about the art, its history, or the techniques used. The possibilities are endless!

FAQ on Interactive Maps in PowerPoint

1. what are the limitations of ppt when creating interactive maps.

First, PowerPoint doesn’t allow you to display multiple types of regions simultaneously. For example, you can’t showcase U.S. states and European countries on the same map. You must choose either countries or states or provinces. Attempting to mix different types of regions will result in an error message from PowerPoint.

It’s also not possible to add dots to represent cities automatically.

2. Do I need an internet connection to display an interactive map created with PowerPoint?

Yes. If your map relies on real-time data updates or external links, those specific features will require an internet connection to work properly. Additionally, if you’re using a feature that depends on Bing, Microsoft’s web search engine (via Insert → Charts → Map), then an Internet connection is also required to display the correct areas.

Alternatively, if you create a map with a hotspot interaction in iSpring Suite, it will be displayed perfectly even when offline.

Supreme Court allows Louisiana to use congressional map with second majority-Black district

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday paved the way for Louisiana to use a congressional map in this year's election that includes two majority-Black districts.

The court granted emergency requests filed by an unlikely alliance of Republican state officials and civil rights groups, who were united in asking the high court to block a lower court ruling that invalidated the most recently drawn map. State officials had said they needed to have the map finalized by Wednesday to meet bureaucratic deadlines and avoid "disarray."

Black voters have historically voted for Democrats, and a map with two majority-Black districts could give them an opportunity to pick up a seat, which could help them regain control of the closely divided House of Representatives.

The court's three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson writing that the state still had time to draw a map that would address the various legal questions that have been raised. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority.

"There is little risk of voter confusion from a new map being imposed this far out from the November election," Jackson wrote.

The liberal justices have objected in previous cases when the court has acted to block changes to district maps or election laws in an election year, often in ways that benefited Republicans.

Internal divisions on that issue flared in 2022 when the court blocked a ruling that invalidated a congressional district map in Alabama.

Then, conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh defended the move , saying it was a "bedrock tenet" of election law that "the rules of the road must be clear and settled in an election year."

The majority did not explain in detail its reasoning in Wednesday's decision.

Louisiana’s map has been the subject of intense litigation, with the state’s original effort ruled to be a racial gerrymander. Using the Legislature’s original map, Republicans won five of the six districts in the 2022 elections.

That map was subsequently redrawn after the Supreme Court last summer unexpectedly buttressed the federal Voting Rights Act by ruling that the similar congressional map in Alabama , the same one it had previously allowed to be used in 2022, discriminated against Black voters.

But after the new Louisiana map was drawn, a new group of plaintiffs who are each described in court papers as “non-African American” brought a legal challenge saying it violated the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which ensures the law applies equally for everyone. Those plaintiffs argued that drawing a second majority-Black district was itself a form of discrimination against non-Black voters.

A federal court struck the new map down, but with time running out to finalize the congressional districts before this year’s elections, state officials told the Supreme Court that it was essential to “avoid chaos and confusion.”

The plaintiffs in the new case said the state’s deadlines were “hopelessly arbitrary,” in part because there is no spring primary election.

Louisiana does not have traditional primary elections like those in other states; instead, all candidates appear on the Election Day ballot in what is known as a “ jungle primary .” The state recently revised its election laws, with more party primaries like those in other states set to be introduced in 2026.

Advocates for the latest Louisiana map welcomed Wednesday's order by the Supreme Court.

“Today’s Supreme Court action ensures that Black voters’ voices will not be silenced during this year’s critical elections,” Sara Rohani, redistricting fellow for the Legal Defense Fund, said in a statement. “The Voting Rights Act requires Louisiana to have a map where Black voters have a fair opportunity to elect candidates of choice. While this is not the end of our work to defend that principle, it is a critical moment in our fight for fair maps in Louisiana and reflects the strength of our democracy.”

Helicopter Carrying Iran’s President Has Crashed, State Media Reports

Rescuers are trying to locate the helicopter on which President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian were traveling, state media reported. Their status is unknown.

A helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi crashed on Sunday, according to Iran’s state media and the country’s mission to the United Nations, but has yet to be found by search-and-rescue workers because of heavy fog.

The helicopter was also carrying Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Iran’s foreign minister.

The state news agency IRNA reported that an enormous search operation involving 16 teams was underway to locate the helicopter. Inclement weather, the reports said, was hampering the effort. The teams had yet to locate the crash site after almost five hours.

State media has yet to report on casualties or confirm the whereabouts or condition of the president. The cause of the crash is also unknown.

“Given the complexities of the region, connection has been difficult, and we are hoping that the rescue teams reach the helicopter and can give us more information,” Ahmad Vahidi, Iran’s interior minister, told state television.

Mr. Raisi was on an official visit to the province of Eastern Azerbaijan, a mountainous region in northwestern Iran.

A delegation of ministers traveled with him in a convoy of three helicopters, state media reported, adding that the two other aircraft had reached their destinations.

In addition to the president and the foreign minister, the governor of the province was also in the helicopter, which crashed in an area called Varzaghan, state media reported.

Iran’s law stipulates that if the president dies, power is transferred to the first vice president and an election must be called within six months. The first vice president is Mohammad Mokhber, a conservative politician.
