Nvidia Says Growth Will Continue as A.I. Hits ‘Tipping Point’

The A.I. chip maker’s revenue more than tripled, and profits rose ninefold. It also projected that its revenue would more than triple again.

Jensen Huang speaks from a stage in front of a screen that says, “Grace Hopper AI Supercomputer for the Era of Generative AI.”

By Don Clark

Reporting from San Francisco

Nvidia, the kingpin of chips powering artificial intelligence , on Wednesday released quarterly financial results that reinforced how the company has become one of the biggest winners of the artificial intelligence boom, and it said demand for its products would fuel continued sales growth.

The Silicon Valley chip maker has been on an extraordinary rise over the past 18 months, driven by demand for its specialized and costly semiconductors, which are used for training popular A.I. services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. Nvidia has become known as one of the “ Magnificent Seven ” tech stocks, which, including others like Amazon, Apple and Microsoft, have helped power the stock market.

Nvidia’s valuation has surged more than 40 percent to $1.7 trillion since the start of the year, turning it into one of the world’s most valuable public companies. Last week, the company briefly eclipsed the market values of Amazon and Alphabet before receding to the fifth-most-valuable tech company. Its stock market gains are largely a result of repeatedly exceeding analysts’ expectations for growth, a feat that is becoming more difficult as they keep raising their predictions.

On Wednesday, Nvidia reported that revenue in its fiscal fourth quarter more than tripled from a year earlier to $22.1 billion, while profit soared nearly ninefold to $12.3 billion. Revenue was well above the $20 billion the company predicted in November and above Wall Street estimates of $20.4 billion.

Nvidia predicted that revenue in the current quarter would total about $24 billion, also more than triple the year-earlier period and higher than analysts’ average forecast of $22 billion.

Jensen Huang , Nvidia’s co-founder and chief executive, argues that an epochal shift to upgrade data centers with chips needed for training powerful A.I. models is still in its early phases. That will require spending roughly $2 trillion to equip all the buildings and computers to use chips like Nvidia’s, he predicts.

  • Record Data Center revenue of $14.51 billion, up 41% from Q2, up 279% from year ago

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 21, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) today reported revenue for the third quarter ended October 29, 2023, of $18.12 billion, up 206% from a year ago and up 34% from the previous quarter.

GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $3.71, up more than 12x from a year ago and up 50% from the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $4.02, up nearly 6x from a year ago and up 49% from the previous quarter.

“Our strong growth reflects the broad industry platform transition from general-purpose to accelerated computing and generative AI,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

“Large language model startups, consumer internet companies and global cloud service providers were the first movers, and the next waves are starting to build. “NVIDIA GPUs, CPUs, networking, AI foundry services and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software are all growth engines in full throttle. The era of generative AI is taking off,” he said.

NVIDIA will pay its next quarterly cash dividend of $0.04 per share on December 28, 2023, to all shareholders of record on December 6, 2023.

A live webcast (listen-only mode) of the conference call will be accessible at NVIDIA’s investor relations website, https://investor.nvidia.com . Non-GAAP Measures To supplement NVIDIA’s condensed consolidated financial statements presented in accordance with GAAP, the company uses non-GAAP measures of certain components of financial performance. These non-GAAP measures include non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP operating expenses, non-GAAP income from operations, non-GAAP other income (expense), net, non-GAAP net income, non-GAAP net income, or earnings, per diluted share, and free cash flow. For NVIDIA’s investors to be better able to compare its current results with those of previous periods, the company has shown a reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP financial measures. These reconciliations adjust the related GAAP financial measures to exclude acquisition termination costs, stock-based compensation expense, acquisition-related and other costs, IP-related costs, other, gains and losses from non-affiliated investments, interest expense related to amortization of debt discount, and the associated tax impact of these items where applicable. Free cash flow is calculated as GAAP net cash provided by operating activities less both purchases of property and equipment and intangible assets and principal payments on property and equipment and intangible assets. NVIDIA believes the presentation of its non-GAAP financial measures enhances the user’s overall understanding of the company’s historical financial performance. The presentation of the company’s non-GAAP financial measures is not meant to be considered in isolation or as a substitute for the company’s financial results prepared in accordance with GAAP, and the company’s non-GAAP measures may be different from non-GAAP measures used by other companies.

7 reasons Nvidia is poised to soar 67% as its rally continues for the next 2 years, according to a Wall Street research firm

  • Constellation Research said Nvidia stock will soar 65% to $200 per share over the next year.
  • The research firm said it expects Nvidia stock to continue soaring for the next 18 to 24 months as it benefits from its AI dominance.
  • There are seven moats around Nvidia's business that will enable continued growth.

Insider Today

Nvidia stock will surge to $200 per share over the next 12 months, and its ongoing rally is set to last up to another two years, according to Constellation Research.

Constellation founder R "Ray" Wang told CNBC on Monday that he believes Nvidia has seven moats that will help it maintain its dominant position in the market for GPUs that are fueling the AI boom.

"Nvidia is the foundational stock in the Age of AI. CEO Jensen Huang intends to achieve vertically integrated domination from silicon to software through partnerships and direct routes to market. Unlike the PC age where Microsoft, Intel, and Cisco served as a triumvirate foundational players, this new era will have new players all tied back to Nvidia," Wang told Business Insider in an e-mail on Monday.

These are the seven reasons Wang expects Nvidia stock to soar 65% from current levels.

1. Visionary founder-led CEO

"It's a visionary-led CEO, and that's very very important as you've seen in the valley. Those are the ones that have led, like the Larry Ellisons of the world, the scott Mcnealys, the Mark Zuckerbergs," Wang said.

2. High barrier to entry

"There's few competitors that can come into this chip market, and it takes a long time to get a chip to market, and if you can do that and if you succeed and then if you can actually get the right chip, that's a very hard thing to do."

3. High switching costs

"Once you're in, you're locked in because of the CUDA software and all the access to the chips, the software, and the entire stack. You're going to be locked in for quite some time and they've got quite a lead in terms of doing that."

4. Dominant market share

"Nvidia has had dominant market share, and I think that makes a big difference because they've been in this market for quite some time and the competitors are behind by 24 months."

5. Strong product roadmap

"We're only seeing one-tenth, maybe one-one hundredth of the product roadmap that Nvidia has out there, and that's really exciting for those who actually have some insight into what they have next, because it's more than just chips, and it's more than just what's happening in software. That ability to go from silicon all the way to the end side, that's where we're going to see a lot of the innovation."

6. GPU is the default standard in AI

"The ecosystem has made the GPU a default standard. It's the standard everyone's looking to for AI from inference and testing."

7. The numbers don't lie

"We're seeing some amazing growth here that actually matches the P/E ratio, and that's what everyone is looking at, they're trying to figure out how this is going to continue, but gross margins are 78%, 262% growth compared to a year ago, this is going to continue for at least the next 18 to 24 months."

Wang said the current 14% decline in the stock since it peaked at about $140 per share last week represents yet another buying opportunity for investors.

"The pullback is coming at a macro level. People are worried about the consumer side, people worried about where the economy is going to head, and they're doing some profit-taking before the summer, so I think it's a good time to buy the dip," Wang said.

Wang isn't the only analyst on Wall Street with a $200 price target for Nvidia stock.

Last week, Rosenblatt raised its Nvidia price target to $200 per share on the prospect of the company better monetizing its CUDA software platform.

Nvidia Stock Quote

Here's why Nvidia may be back on its way to hitting a new all-time high.

Nvidia ( NVDA 4.18% ) share prices have recently reversed course after seemingly pushing higher for months without a breather. The stock now trades nearly 13% off its intraday high price of over $140 per share hit last month.

There is one Wall Street analyst who thinks shares of the artificial intelligence (AI) leader will soon rebound and even exceed its all-time high. Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore put out a new note on Nvidia on Monday increasing his price target from $116 to $144 per share. Moore determined that share price based on what he sees as a jump in earnings per share (EPS) through next year. Moore thinks Nvidia stock is worth buying as his new price target would represent a gain of about 17.5% from its current price.

Nvidia's "compelling narrative"

After data checks pointed to strong demand in China and Taiwan, as well as the U.S., Moore raised his EPS estimate for the semiconductor giant from $2.94 to $3.34 per share for next year. Moore believes Nvidia, "remains the most compelling narrative in the AI [semiconductor] space, and as we transition from H100 to H200 and then Blackwell, visibility and backlog will improve materially."

That last point is the key to an investment in Nvidia right now. Even after its recent correction, Nvidia shares had run up ahead of revenue and earnings growth. In other words, further growth is already built into the stock price to some extent.

But even as Nvidia prepares to begin bulk shipments of its new, Blackwell AI platform, its H100 and H200 graphics processing units (GPUs) are still in high demand. That's because many of Nvidia's customers have been waiting in line to get these high-strength computing chips needed for training generative AI models .

Those sales will remain strong even as shipments of the new Blackwell chip accelerate. That's why investors should still feel comfortable buying Nvidia shares. Even after the massive gains, there is a strong base of sales, and an even stronger pipeline of new AI products ahead.
