  • Mentioning specific metrics for improvement (e.g., increased sales, decreased churn rate) and positive results that stem from your efforts as well as any awards or recognition received for achieving such results.
  • Outlining your experience in sales and how you’ve been able to successfully motivate and lead a team in the past.
  • Discussing your ability to develop strong relationships with clients and how you’ll be able to help them reach their business goals.

2. Tailor your cover letter to the job description

To make sure your cover letter is tailored for the job, take a look at the job description and make a list of the skills and qualities they’re looking for. For example, if the job listing mentions that they’re looking for someone with experience in sales, then highlight any relevant experience you have in that area.

If there are any additional requirements or skills mentioned for that job, also list them on your application; this will help make it clear how you can meet their needs.

3. Use strong action verbs

When describing your past experiences, use strong action verbs to help illustrate what you’ve done. This will help hiring managers see just how capable you are of taking on this new role. Some great examples of strong action verbs include:

  • Successfully

4. Proofread your cover letter

The best way to start a Sales Director cover letter is by grabbing the reader's attention with a strong opening line. This could be a brief statement about your achievements in sales, your passion for the industry, or a unique skill you bring to the role. For example, "As a Sales Director who has consistently exceeded targets by 20%+, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my strategic sales approach to your team." This not only showcases your success but also demonstrates your enthusiasm for the role. Remember, the goal is to make the hiring manager want to continue reading your cover letter.

Sales Directors should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the role and their qualifications. They should reiterate how their skills, experience, and leadership style align with the company's needs and goals. It's also important to express enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the company's success. For example: "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my strategic sales leadership and proven track record of driving revenue growth to your team. I am confident that my skills and experience make me a strong candidate for this role. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing this opportunity further." Remember to end with a professional closing like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. This ending is assertive, shows your interest, and invites further communication, which is crucial in sales.

A Sales Director's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to succinctly present your qualifications, achievements, and your understanding of the company's needs without overwhelming the reader with too much information. It's important to remember that hiring managers often have a large number of applications to go through, so keeping your cover letter concise and to the point increases the chances of it being read in full. As a Sales Director, your cover letter should focus on your leadership skills, sales expertise, and key achievements, all of which can be effectively communicated within a one-page document.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as a Sales Director can seem challenging, but it's definitely possible. Here's how you can approach it: 1. Understand the Role: Start by thoroughly understanding the role and responsibilities of a Sales Director. This will help you identify the skills and qualities that are important for the job. 2. Highlight Relevant Experience: Even if you haven't held the title of Sales Director before, you may have relevant experience that can be highlighted. For example, if you've worked in sales, managed a team, or developed sales strategies, these are all relevant experiences. Be sure to highlight these in your cover letter. 3. Showcase Transferable Skills: If you don't have direct experience, focus on transferable skills. These could include leadership, strategic planning, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Provide examples of how you've used these skills in past roles. 4. Show Enthusiasm and Willingness to Learn: Employers value candidates who are eager to learn and grow. Express your enthusiasm for the role and your willingness to learn and adapt. 5. Tailor Your Cover Letter: Make sure your cover letter is tailored to the specific job and company you're applying to. Show that you've done your research and explain why you're interested in this particular role and company. 6. Use Quantifiable Achievements: Wherever possible, use numbers to back up your claims. For example, you could mention the percentage by which you increased sales or the number of team members you managed. 7. Professional Tone: Maintain a professional tone throughout your cover letter. Avoid using jargon or overly complex language. Remember, your cover letter is your chance to make a great first impression. Even without direct experience as a Sales Director, you can still write a compelling cover letter that showcases your skills, experience, and potential.

How to Write an Effective Sales Manager Cover Letter and Resume

Many job applicants write cover letters without much thought. However, this is a big mistake. When writing your sales manager cover letter, it will boost your job application if you can sell yourself as the ultimate candidate. A great cover letter, along with a great sales manager resume, is essential to acing the hiring process.

In your sales manager cover letter, you can highlight your experience in sales manager positions that you have previously held as well as the successful strategies you used in those positions. Overall, your cover letter should establish yourself as a valuable asset to the company. The cover letter tips in this article will show you how to do exactly that.

Sales manager cover letter guide.

An impactful sales manager cover letter follows a fairly specific formula. In this section, we break down the necessary components and share some cover letter writing practices you can use when writing your own. You will also find an example that will help you showcase your sales manager skills.

Why Does Your Sales Manager Cover Letter Matter?

A sales manager cover letter is a key document because it acts as your initial sales pitch for why you should be hired. Your cover letter is your opportunity to distinguish yourself from other job seekers and tell the company about your sales training, exceptional qualifications, and past successful sales. Furthermore, it is a great time to show the company that you share its goals.

All of this is extremely valuable during the competitive application process. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that jobs for sales managers will increase by seven percent between 2020 and 2030. This is on par with the growth of the United States economy as a whole, which means that the supply of sales managers is projected to keep pace with demand.

In a sales manager cover letter, you can add accomplishments and academic qualifications that you think will help you perform well in the job, and explain how the sales techniques you’ve mastered can increase company revenue. To write a powerful cover letter, you should highlight your strong work ethic and detail how you would contribute to a creative sales team.

Essential Components of Your Sales Manager Cover Letter

To write a strong cover letter, you need to incorporate several components. Make sure that the following four things are included somewhere in your letter.

  • Soft skills. In the context of sales management, the most important soft skills are leadership qualities such as integrity, listening skills, reliability, and team-building. These are skills that you must have to be part of the sales staff of any company.
  • Sales management skills. It is good to provide evidence of your sales manager skills when writing your cover letter, as companies closely evaluate these skills when considering a candidate. These skills include coaching, selling, innovation, and other core sales management behaviors.
  • Sales skills. Of course, you need to establish yourself as an excellent salesperson. You can do this by mentioning your track record and prior experience. You can discuss a successful email campaign you ran in a previous role, different sales pipelines that you established, or your use of effective sales tactics.
  • Accomplishments. You should also highlight the professional accomplishments you have achieved throughout your career. These may include being an award-winning sales manager or achieving a high percentage of sales growth after implementing successful campaigns.

5 Tips for Writing a Strong Sales Manager Cover Letter

Use the following tips to create a strong sales management cover letter that will impress anyone who reads it and improve your chances of landing an interview.

  • Be professional. When writing your sales manager cover letter, you must maintain a professional tone in your writing. Remember that you cannot write the way you speak and that the hiring manager whom you are addressing is also a professional. The tone of your letter should be warm and friendly without being too casual.
  • Show your passion. A perfect cover letter will show how much you want to work for the company in question, why you have always admired it, how it aligns with your career goals, and what you like most about your career as a sales manager.
  • Be honest.  It is best to be honest when writing your cover letter, as lies can easily be discovered. Make sure that you are honest about the clients you have worked with, the teams you have led, and the sales you have made. Your references may be checked and, if any deceit is uncovered, you may ruin your chances of being hired.
  • Research the company. One of the best ways to get information about the company is to read its annual report, which you can typically download from its website. This way, you can learn about its activities, accomplishments, mission, vision, and goals for the future. These are very important points that can impact future sales decisions. This strategy will also ensure that you align yourself with the company in your cover letter.
  • Proofread. Before sending your cover letter, you should read it many times to check for errors. Do this ahead of time so that you can make corrections. Your sales manager cover letter must not have spelling or grammatical errors. It must be fluid, and you should remember to write in an active voice.

Sales Manager Resume Guide

a woman holding a laptop after she has finished writing a sales manager cover letter

In this section, we will show you important tips, suggestions, and examples so that you can create an impressive sales manager resume.

Why Does Your Sales Manager Resume Matter?

A sales manager’s resume includes all the details of a person’s professional life. Through a resume, the employer can determine if a candidate is a good fit for the company’s objectives. Once a hiring manager understands your relevant experience, they will have a better idea of how you will perform in the job.

It is important to list any courses in sales training in addition to any bachelor’s or master’s degrees you hold. It is also important to mention your successful sales campaigns. This is also a suitable time to mention noteworthy clients you have worked with in the past.

Essential Components of Your Sales Manager Resume

Below are the components that your sales manager resume should include. You must follow these recommendations to write a successful resume.

  • Header. In the header of your sales manager resume, you must place your name in a larger font than the rest of the text. Then you can place your contact details, including your phone number, address, and email. Make sure that all your data is correct so that the company can contact you easily.
  • Executive summary. When writing your sales manager resume, make sure to include an executive summary that is impactful and communicates your achievements, experience, skills, and qualifications.
  • Professional experience. Make a list of your previous sales jobs, and include the position you held in the company as well as the years you were in that position. Also, include a list of the activities and achievements you carried out in that position.
  • Key skills. Knowing what skills to add to a resume can be hard. Focus on skills that a sales manager must have to perform well in their field. Include hard skills such as software management, financial forecasting, and sales planning, and some soft skills such as analytical skills, leadership, and critical thinking.
  • Key achievements. A key way to stand out from other sales managers is to show your accomplishments, so include industry-relevant achievements on your resume. It is important to be as specific as possible in this section.

5 Tips for Writing a Strong Sales Manager Resume

Below are some tips for creating an impressive resume. Remember to pay attention to details, and focus on demonstrating why you are the ideal sales candidate.

  • Write an excellent summary. The executive summary is the first impression anyone who reads your resume has of you. Concentrate on writing a compelling summary that will make the hiring manager want to read on and learn more about your experience and training.
  • Quantify your achievements. It is good to include your achievements by quantifying them. As a sales manager, you should back up your achievements with references that show the results in measurable terms, such as the overall monetary worth of your campaigns or the number of employees you have been in charge of.
  • Read the job description.  Make sure you read the company’s job post carefully. You can include keywords found in the job post so that your resume will pass through the applicant tracking systems (ATS). This way, you can be sure your resume will get into the hiring manager’s hands.
  • Focus on your sales experience. It is unnecessary to include all the information regarding non-sales jobs you had before starting your career as a sales manager. It is better to focus on the sales jobs you have held, even if you have only had an entry-level position, and describe all your accomplishments in detail.
  • Design. You should use designs that look professional, clean, and minimalistic. That’s why we recommend that you look at sample resume templates and choose one that you feel comfortable with. In the next section, we look at some specific examples.

Sales Manager Resume Examples

Below is an example of a sales manager’s resume and an example of the executive summary. As you’ll be able to see, our examples adhere to the components and tips discussed above.

These 3 Sales Manager cover letter example s should provide you with a good steer on how to write your own cover letter, and the general structure to follow.

Our simple step-by-step guide below provides some more detailed advice on how you can craft a winning cover letter for yourself, that will ensure your CV gets opened.

How to write a Sales Manager cover letter

Here’s how you can write your own eye-catching cover letter, broken down into simple steps.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

Type the content of your cover letter directly into the email you are sending, or if you are applying via a job board, directly into their messaging system.

The reason for doing this it to ensure that your cover letter gets seen instantly and you can start connecting with the recruiter as soon as they open your message.

If you attach your cover letter as a separate document, the recipient will have to open up the document, which will slow the process down, or make them less likely to even open your cover letter – which could mean your application gets skipped over.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To kick your cover letter off, start with a friendly greeting to build rapport with the recruiter instantly.

Your greeting should be personable but professional. Not too casual, but not too formal either

Go with something like…

  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid old-fashioned greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very formal companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you have opened the cover letter with a warm greeting, you need to explain which role you are interested in.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant could be managing over 10 vacancies, so it’s crucial to pinpoint exactly which one you are interested in.

Highlight the department/area if possible and look for any reference numbers you can quote.

These are some examples you can add..

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Sales Manager with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

When sending a job application to a recruiter or hiring manager, it is important to remember that they will normally be very busy and pushed for time.

Therefore, you need to get you message across to them quickly (in a matter of seconds ideally). So, keep your cover letter short and to-the-point. A long waffling cover letter will overwhelm recruiters when they are running through hundreds of emails in there inbox, but a concise one will get their attention.

So, keep your cover letter to just a few sentences long, and save the extensive detail for your CV.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Gerald Baker Senior Accountant 07887500404 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application email, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

As a proactive individual and recipient of the 2022 UKBA Women in Business Student Award, I believe I am the perfect fit for this role. Moreover, I possess a deep understanding of the timber industry, having worked part time as a sales assistant for over four years at a local wood yard in Sheffield alongside my studies. I am confident that my ability to identify and pursue potential leads, combined with my exceptional negotiation skills, will contribute to the growth of TimberCo Ltd.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my skills align with your team goals and I am available for an interview at your convenience.

Sales Cover Letter Tips, Templates, & Examples to Land Your Ideal Role

Aja Frost

Published: April 20, 2022

A strong sales cover letter can do a lot for you as an applicant — like demonstrate effective communication skills, show you're invested in the opportunity, and give you room to add some color to your application.

sales leadership cover letter

That said, stringing cover letters together is often one of the more grating, monotonous tasks job seekers have to put up with — but while putting a sound sales cover letter together can be a chore , it doesn't necessarily have to be a challenge . There are some key tips, strategies, and structures you can fold into your letters to make them as compelling as possible.

Let's take a look at some of those tricks, review how to arrange your sales cover letter, and see an example of what a solid one looks like in practice.

Sales Cover Letter Tips

Keep it concise..

You should aim to keep your cover letter between three to five paragraphs, and under no circumstances should it be more than one page. Employers fielding a high volume of applications could be leafing through hundreds of cover letters every day. If you're too long-winded — stringing together a multi-page history of your entire professional life — you're going to get overlooked.

Use a professional font.

A cover letter is a professional document, so it warrants a professional presentation. Don't get too cute with your font selection or colors. Go with something like Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri — and always have the text be black.

Avoid flowery language without sacrificing flow.

You're not writing an English essay or preparing for a poetry slam here. Again, you want to keep things professional. Avoid flowery phrases like, " At your leisure " or " Please find attached herewith. ” That said, you want your letter to flow and sound natural, so try not to come off too stiff.

Highlight relevant skills.

Pore over the listing for the role you're applying for. What is the company in question looking for? What specific skills and qualities do they call out in the job description? Once you have those questions squared away, try to find ways to include those elements in your cover letter.

Reference quantifiable achievements.

In most cases, employers won't look at the skills you highlight and just take you at your word — you need to point to hard, quantifiable results that demonstrate you're the real deal.

How to Write a Sales Cover Letter

If you’re applying to a conservative company or work in a formal industry — like finance, healthcare, or law — include a full heading: Your name and address, followed by a space, the date, followed by another space, and the company name and address.

But if you’re applying to a less formal place, you can probably get away with simply writing your name and email address — followed by a space and the company's name and email address.

Maybe you’re not sure who will be reading your cover letter — but don’t write " To whom it may concern, " " Dear hiring manager, " or any other generic title. With a little research, you can usually find the hiring manager’s name.

Let’s say you’re applying for the SMB Account Executive role at Joyfull. Google "SMB sales manager Joyfull" and see if you can find the team’s leader on LinkedIn. When applying to a conservative company, write “Dear Mr./Ms. [Last name].” When applying to a startup or relatively relaxed organization, write “Dear [First name] [Last name].”

Your intro paragraph should highlight why you’re a great fit. It’s a high-level overview, rather than an in-depth exploration of your work history and qualifications, so keep it under four sentences.

The standard cover letter opening line is something along the lines of:

"I’m interested in becoming a sales representative on your SMB team " or " I'm excited for the opportunity to apply for the SMB sales representative role. "

While these sentences might not kill your chances of getting the job, they generally don’t help. You want to grab the reader’s attention and sell yourself from the very start — so don't be reluctant to try a personalized, compelling line that will draw the hiring manager in and make them want to read more.

Here are a few examples:

" I love working with small businesses — in fact, I’ve helped more than 300 in the past year at my current job — which is why I’m so excited about the chance to help SMBs discover Joyfull. "

" Every week, I write a blog post about a common SMB challenge. Helping SMBs overcome this obstacle isn’t just rewarding -- it’s also a great lead gen strategy. My passion for this type of work led me to your SMB Account Executive position. "

Do you know a current or former employee who speaks positively about the company? Mention them in your intro. In some cases, you might have their referral — either by submitting your application or connecting you with the hiring manager — but even if you don't, you can still drop their name.

For instance, you might say something like, "As a self-starter who thrives in autonomous, results-oriented environments, I’m drawn to the BDR role at Red Shelf. I’ve heard great things about the culture and learning opportunities from Sarah Grossman, who started as a BDR and now works on your L&D team."

First Body Paragraph

In this paragraph, choose a relevant work experience. What does "relevant" mean? You’re trying to show your existing abilities and knowledge map well to the role you’re applying for, so if you currently work in retail and you want to become a business development rep, you might write:

" As a floor associate for Wilson & Co., I help 60-plus customers every day with questions about brands, fit, quality, and more. This experience has taught me how to provide a positive customer experience and be helpful while driving sales — both skills I’d use as a HubSpot BDR. Finally, it’s made me comfortable approaching strangers and acting as a product expert, which would be invaluable when reaching out to inbound leads. "

Second Body Paragraph

The second body paragraph follows the same structure as the first. Take another relevant work or educational experience, and connect the dots to the role you’re applying for. Imagine you’re currently an AE applying for a manager position. Your second section could read:

“ In the past 16 months on the Pacific West team, I’ve taken several opportunities to grow my leadership abilities. I started a mentorship program for new reps, pairing them with salespeople who have been at the company for at least two years. This program has been a huge success — the half-year retention is 20% higher for participants versus those without mentors. As a sales manager, I’d continue to look for ways to support, mentor, and train my salespeople so they can maximize their potential. "

Third Body Paragraph

If you have another relevant experience, discuss it here. But you don’t have to add a third paragraph just for the sake of adding one — a lot of the time, a shorter cover letter is better, provided you can convey an appropriate amount of relevant information.

Let’s suppose you’re applying for a sales engineer role — a highly technical and demanding job that likely warrants a three-paragraph cover letter. You could say something like:

"After spending two years in customer support, I’m in my element when answering product-related questions. There’s nothing I enjoy more than getting a challenging ticket I can dig into — and there’s nothing more satisfying than finally solving it. As a sales engineer for HubSpot, I’d get the chance to talk to customers about the product on a daily basis and answer their most complex questions. In addition, I could use the communication skills I’ve honed as a support rep."

This section doesn’t need to be long or flowery. Many people end with unnecessary statements like, "Please let me know if I can provide any more information” or "Thank you for your consideration."

The problem with these? A hiring manager can safely assume you’ll give more info if asked and are appreciative of their time. You’ll seem like every other applicant who’s grabbed a generic template from the internet — which, okay, you might be doing, but they don’t need to know that.

Instead, reiterate your interest with a strong summary line like:

“The best days at work are usually the longest and most demanding — because I go home knowing I’ve helped multiple owners dramatically change the course of their businesses. Your hyper-loyal user base suggests being a Joyfull AE comes with even more opportunities to help young and growing organizations.”

Why It Works

This cover letter is effective for a few reasons. For one, it speaks directly to how the applicant's hard, quantifiable achievements align with both the role's required technical acumen and the more abstract qualities needed to thrive in it.

By alluding to the fact that they're familiar with the vertical the role serves, the applicant establishes the relevance of their experience — and by touching on elements like their experience with mentorship, they're demonstrating their growth potential within the role.

If you're in the middle of a job hunt, odds are you're going to write your fair share of cover letters — so knowing how to put a compelling one together is in your best interest. It might be the difference between ultimately landing a sales role and not even popping up on an employer's radar.

How to write a sales cover letter

Writing a compelling sales cover letter involves showcasing your skills, experiences, and enthusiasm for the position while demonstrating your understanding of the company's needs and goals. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you craft an effective sales cover letter:

  • Format and header : Start with your contact information, followed by the date and the recipient's details. Use a professional font and maintain a clean, easy-to-read format.
  • Salutation : Address the hiring manager by name if possible. If you don't know their name, use a generic salutation like "Dear hiring manager."
  • Opening paragraph : Introduce yourself and mention the specific role you're applying for. Briefly express your enthusiasm for the position and the company. You can also include a sentence that highlights a mutual connection, if applicable.
  • Middle paragraphs : Use one or two paragraphs to showcase your relevant skills, experiences, and achievements. Tailor your content to align with the job description. Highlight specific accomplishments that demonstrate your ability to meet or exceed sales targets, build relationships, and contribute to the company's success. Use quantifiable results whenever possible (e.G., "Increased sales by 30% within the first quarter").
  • Show your fit : Explain why you're a perfect fit for the role and the company. Mention aspects of the company's culture, mission, or products/services that resonate with you. Describe how your background and skills align with their needs and how you can contribute to their goals.
  • Address concerns or gaps : If you have any gaps in your resume or changing career paths, briefly address them and explain how your experiences have prepared you for the sales role.
  • Express enthusiasm : Reiterate your excitement about the opportunity to join their team and contribute to their success. Make it clear that you're genuinely interested in the position.
  • Closing paragraph : Thank the employer for considering your application and express your interest in further discussing your qualifications. Mention that you've attached your resume for their review.
  • Formal closing : End the letter with a professional closing , such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your typed name.
  • Signature : Leave space for your physical signature if you're submitting a printed cover letter. If submitting electronically, simply type your name.
  • Contact information : Include your phone number and email address under your typed name for easy follow-up.
  • Proofread : Thoroughly proofread your cover letter for grammar, spelling, and formatting errors. Mistakes can make you appear careless and negatively impact your chances.
  • Tailor for each application : Customize your cover letter for each application. Address the company's specific needs and reference relevant experiences to demonstrate your fit.
  • Keep it concise : Keep your cover letter concise, ideally around one page. Use strong, succinct language to convey your message effectively.
  • Attach your resume : Attach your resume to the email or application if applicable.

Your sales cover letter should be a balance of professionalism, enthusiasm, and evidence of your sales prowess. It's your chance to make a strong first impression and encourage the employer to review your resume and consider you for an interview.

  • Emphasizing speed-to-competency: Mentioning how new hires reached productivity 25% faster underscores the applicant's skills in developing efficient training programs and can be especially valuable in a sales environment where quick onboarding can translate into faster results.
  • Connecting past experiences to employer needs: The cover letter bridges the candidate’s past experience to the potential contributions they can make to the employer’s company, suggesting a seamless transition and immediate impact on sales operations and market positioning.

The must-have sections and format of your sales team leader cover letter

When writing your sales team leader cover letter, keep in mind that it'll only be read by the recruiters and not the Applicant Tracker System (or software used to assess your profile). That's why you should structure your content with a/an:

  • Header (apart from your contact information, include your name, the role you're applying for, and the date);
  • Personalized salutation;
  • Opening paragraph to win the recruiters over;
  • Middle paragraph with key details;
  • Closing that starts from clichés;
  • Sign off (that's not mandatory).

Industry standards dictate your paragraphs to be single-spaced and to wrap your content in a one-inch margin. Designing your sales team leader cover letter, refer to one of our templates , which automatically takes care of the spacing and margins.

Choose the same font for your sales team leader cover letter as you did for your resume : the likes of Lato and Bitter would help you to stand out in a sea of cover letters in Arial or Times New Roman.

Export your whole sales team leader cover letter from our builder in PDF to keep the same formatting and image quality.

The top sections on a sales team leader cover letter

  • Header: Includes your contact information, the date, and the employer's contact details, providing a professional appearance and making it easy for the recruiter to reach you.
  • Greeting: Addresses the hiring manager by name, showing you have done your research and are serious about this specific opportunity with their company.
  • Introduction: Briefly state your current role, your interest in the position, and how your experience as a sales team leader has prepared you for this job, capturing the recruiter's attention right away.
  • Body: Elaborate on your key achievements, sales targets met, leadership skills, and how you've successfully driven a team to performance excellence, demonstrating your qualifications for the sales team leader role.
  • Closing: End with a strong call to action, expressing your enthusiasm for discussing how you can contribute to the team, and thank the recruiter for considering your application, leaving a positive and proactive final impression.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proven sales record: Recruiters look for candidates who have consistently met or exceeded sales targets, as this directly demonstrates the ability to generate revenue for the company.
  • Leadership experience: The ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team of sales professionals is crucial, as the role involves guiding the team to success and ensuring team members meet their individual targets.
  • Excellent communication skills: Sales team leaders must communicate effectively with their team, clients, and senior management, making this skill essential for the role.
  • Strategic thinking: Recruiters seek individuals who can develop and implement sales strategies that align with the company's goals and adapt to changing market conditions.
  • Coaching and development ability: The capability to mentor and develop sales team members is valued, as it helps improve the team's overall performance and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Customer relationship management: A sales team leader should excel in building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, which is key to ensuring customer satisfaction and repeat business.

How to start your sales team leader cover letter: with a greeting, of course

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your sales team leader cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your sales team leader cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Specific Department] Team,
  • Dear [Company Name] Recruiter,
  • Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Title] [Last Name],
  • Dear Selection Committee,

How to start your sales team leader cover letter introduction

The opening paragraph of your sales team leader cover letter can seem like a real enigma.

Where do you start writing ?

In your sales team leader cover letter introduction, focus on yourself by stating what:

  • gets you motivated and excited about the role;
  • you like best about the company, from culture to awards.

Write no more than two sentences, which are both authentic and show your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

What to write in the body of your sales team leader cover letter

Now that you've got your intro covered, here comes the heart and soul of your sales team leader cover letter.

It's time to write the middle or body paragraphs . This is the space where you talk about your relevant talent in terms of hard skills (or technologies) and soft (or people and communication) skills.

Keep in mind that the cover letter has a different purpose from your sales team leader resume.

Yes, you still have to be able to show recruiters what makes your experience unique (and applicable) to the role.

But, instead of just listing skills, aim to tell a story of your one, greatest accomplishment.

Select your achievement that:

  • covers job-crucial skills;
  • can be measured with tangible metrics;
  • shows you in the best light.

Use the next three to six paragraphs to detail what this success has taught you, and also to sell your profile.

Closing paragraph basics: choose between a promise and a call to action

You've done all the hard work - congratulations! You've almost reached the end of your sales team leader cover letter .

But how do you ensure recruiters, who have read your application this far, remember you?

Most sales team leader professionals end their cover letter with a promise - hinting at their potential and what they plan on achieving if they're hired.

Another option would be to include a call for follow-up, where you remind recruiters that you're very interested in the opportunity (and look forward to hearing from them, soon).

Choose to close your sales team leader cover letter in the way that best fits your personality.

Addressing limited to no experience in the sales team leader cover letter

There's nothing to worry about if you lack professional experience .

Your sales team leader cover letter could bridge the gaps in your professional history by focusing on what matters most to recruiters, that's either:

  • skills - focusing on transferable ones you've gained, thanks to your life experience (e.g. volunteering, certificates, etc.);
  • achievements - select the most relevant and noteworthy one from your history (e.g. education, projects, etc.);
  • motivation - describe how you envision your professional growth in the next up to five years, thanks to this opportunity.

Key takeaways

Writing your sales team leader cover letter has never been easier, so remember to:

  • Select a sales team leader cover letter template that automatically meets industry formatting (e.g. has one-inch margins, is single-spaced, is in PDF, etc.);
  • Make your sales team leader cover letter personal by mentioning the recruiters' first or last name;
  • Within the introduction, describe what you like best about the company in no more than two sentences;
  • Use your sales team leader cover letter body to tell a story of your greatest achievement, backed up by job-relevant skills and technologies;
  • If you have no professional experience, be honest about it in your sales team leader cover letter, but also write about your unique talents.

Entry-Level

A great sales cover letter usually has five sections, outlined below. When possible, connect each section back to your defining sales skills and the employer’s hiring needs. The following advice and examples show what to include in your cover letter so it’s optimized for each job application.

At the top of the page, include your resume contact header, the date, and any contact details you have for your recipient. Add the title “Sales Professional” to your contact header. You can then modify this title to align with each job posting (as long as it’s still true to your background). As sales jobs vary, this extra detail can enhance your cover letter by quickly showing employers you’re the type of applicant they’re looking for. That can pertain to someone in management, inside or outside sales, or a certain product set or market region.

(Note: Feel free to omit this section if you send your letter as an email message and your contact information is part of your signature.)

2. Salutation

Whenever you can, address your recipient by name – it’s the quickest way to signal you’re sending a job-specific letter and not a boilerplate. If you can’t find the recipient’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager” so your greeting is still tailored somewhat to each job opening.

Dear Ms. Young:

Dear 123 Corp. Sales Manager:

3. “Hook” or introduction

To catch the reader’s attention, start your letter with an example of your success in growing revenue or an assigned client base. Since performance numbers are key to your field, quantify your example in terms of a clear percentage, ranking, or dollar amount. In the sales cover letter example below, see how the applicant quickly connects her chosen highlight to a relevant skill (sales training) that can benefit the employer.

Dear Mr. Davis:

As sales manager at The ABC Agency, I’ve led a 20-person team to exceed monthly quotas and grow annual revenue by 20% in two years. With my passion for sales training, I could be a valuable asset to your organization.

4. Body paragraph(s)

Use the main section of your letter to tell why you’re drawn to this job or employer. For instance, maybe it’s an outside sales role in an industry you’re eager to return to. Or maybe the company’s brand, business model, or sales approach appeals to you somehow. With this explanation, you can show hiring managers you read their job posting and are responding to it directly.

Following this explanation, cite two or three more of your main skills or achievements , possibly as bullet points.

With seven years of industry experience and a bachelor’s degree in marketing, I’m drawn to your company’s reputation for top-caliber digital products. My career highlights also include:

  • Launching a social media strategy that increased our online presence and grew sales by 15%
  • Raising customer satisfaction scores and retention by 10% in one year

5. Call to action

Finally, request an interview and thank the manager for their consideration. Carry your letter’s focus through this last paragraph by briefly restating your ability to drive lucrative sales deals. To end your cover letter, use a simple closing like “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and then your name.

I would like to further discuss the sales executive position at The Big Sales Company and how my skills can benefit your team. Please call or email me to schedule an interview. I appreciate your time and look forward to possibly hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Simon Bishop

Sales Cover Letter Tips

1. highlight your main sales skills.

As part of your letter’s body text, add a short list of bullet points to show your success in different sales areas. For instance, you might mention a program you started to enhance collaboration with the marketing team. Or, if you’re applying to a leadership role, cite measures you took to raise sales staff morale and retention.

This is another section where you can specify revenue growth or other performance data relevant to your field. In the following example, notice how the applicant uses percentages to give compelling evidence of her skill set.

My recent achievements include:

  • Leading a local market research project that improved our product positioning and grew revenue by 43% in 2023
  • Generating more than 110% of my quota for five consecutive quarters
  • Converting 81% of leads into sales, with 62% becoming repeat customers

2. Speak to the company's strategic goals

An effective cover letter doesn’t just give facts about your past, it also shows your excitement for the future. What direction is the hiring company headed? Does the job posting reveal its short- or long-term business goals? Speak to those goals and how you see yourself advancing them, and you’ll give your cover letter the engaged and confident tone it needs to stand out.

I’m drawn to 123 Corporation based on its recent expansion into the medical supply field. My past work with hospital suppliers and experience in the health care niche can benefit your company.

3. Show you can serve each customer's needs

Sales jobs often center on building clients’ trust and finding custom product solutions. Feature this consultative approach in your cover letter if it reflects your background and the sales roles you’re pursuing.

Last quarter, I grew my client base by 22% while maintaining a 95% account retention rate. My expert product knowledge and networking skills inspired confidence and loyalty in clients. I hope to bring the same level of growth to the sales representative role at Staples.

Sales Cover Letter Frequently Asked Questions

Do i really need a cover letter for my job search -.

Yes, in most cases. The majority of job postings today require or allow you to send a cover letter along with your resume. While not every hiring manager reads or prioritizes them, a well-crafted letter can only help you stand out from other applicants. It will also help you clarify what points to emphasize during the interview.

How do I persuade the hiring manager of my sales skills? -

Don’t just tell, show. Anytime you use a trait like “dedicated” or “client-focused” to describe yourself, follow with a clear example showing the trait in action. Detailed examples of your success help hiring managers envision the value you’ll add to your next sales job.

How long should my cover letter be? -

No more than one page, or around 250 words. Resist the urge to tell your whole career story, even if you’ve worked many years in sales. Give just enough detail to pique hiring managers’ interest so they take a closer look at your resume.

Election results latest: Labour win landslide - as Tory collapse sees Liz Truss and record number of cabinet ministers kicked out

Sir Keir Starmer will be the new prime minister. His party is heading for a landslide as Tory cabinet ministers including Penny Mordaunt and Grant Shapps are kicked out. Reform UK have four seats so far including Nigel Farage - and it's been a record night for the Lib Dems.

In a shock moment, former prime minister Liz Truss has lost her seat in Norfolk South West - which was considered to be safe.

There were slow claps in the audience as the candidates awaited the arrival of Ms Truss - who was nowhere to be seen moments before the result.

Terry Jermy, for Labour, won the seat with a majority of 630.

"For me, this is the Portillo moment of the night," our political editor Beth Rigby says.

"This was a very safe seat - she was not expected to lose it. There was a big campaign about tactical voting.

"When we were going around the country, every time Liz Truss was mentioned she provoked a reaction - it's been very damaging to the Conservatives."

This means, as of now, the Tories have lost seats once held by five of their former prime ministers - Finchley (Margaret Thatcher), Maidenhead (Theresa May), Henley (Boris Johnson), Witney (Lord Cameron) and Norfolk South West (Liz Truss).

This country has witnessed a peaceful revolution after a landslide which seemed inconceivable barely three years ago.

From today and for the next five years, our 58th prime minister will have a total command of the Commons, after a result in line with Tony Blair's historic Labour victories of 1997.

Sir Keir Starmer has been given, in the eyes of many, a political blank cheque from which he will be expected to enact a promise of change.

Remarkably, this result for Labour has been achieved in many areas which voted Leave in the Brexit referendum of 2016, marking the repair of a schism between Labour and 52% of the population.

However, this result cannot be treated as an unalloyed endorsement of everything Labour campaigned on - the shifting political sands point to a fickle electorate determined to punish incumbents.

Voters everywhere seem to dislike existing governments of all stripes - Tory in Westminster, SNP in Scotland and Labour in Wales - and there have been massive drops in support for all.

One commentator went as far as to dub this the "loveless landslide".

At 6am, Labour’s victory comes off the back of just 35% of the voting public choosing to vote for them - up just 1.4 percentage points on 2019 and a whole five percentage points lower than Jeremy Corbyn in 2017.

Two expected Starmer cabinet members - Jonathan Ashworth and Thangham Debbonaire - have lost.

Instead, it is the collapse of the Tories, and the rise of Reform, that in so many cases has handed Labour its chance in parts of the country it has never done well in before.

Labour have won the general election - and congratulations for the prime minister-to-be are already pouring in from across the globe.

Simon Harris, the Taoiseach of Ireland, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Australia's Anthony Albanese are among those to have sent early well wishes.

Sharing a photograph of the pair, Mr Trudeau congratulated Sir Keir Starmer on a "historic UK election victory".

He said: "Lots of work ahead to build a more progressive, fair future for people on both sides of the Atlantic.

"Let’s get to it, my friend."

Meanwhile, in Ireland, Mr Harris said: "I congratulate him and his candidates and I look forward to working together as close neighbours and friends.

"Keir Starmer and I share a desire for it to go from strength to strength in the years ahead."

And we heard this from the Australian PM...

By Dan Whitehead , home news correspondent

It's been 23 years since the Tories were last wiped out in Wales - and just like in 2001, there is no longer any blue on the Welsh map.

The Conservative "Boris bounce" which turned much of the north of Wales blue in 2019 has landed firmly back in Labour's hands, with the party winning 27 of the 32 Welsh constituencies.

It was a solid night for Plaid Cymru too – winning four seats, with the Lib Dems taking one.

The writing was on the wall early – the now former Welsh secretary David TC Davies called my colleague Tomos Evans hours before he lost his seat: "I've prepared one speech, and it's not a victory speech."

'We've let people down'

The numbers will be digested in the coming hours and days – but there's already something interesting happening in Wales: in 12 of the Labour victories, Reform UK came second, beating the Tories and other parties.

That will be a cause for concern for Labour in Wales ahead of the next Senedd elections in 2026.

This morning, though, Welsh Tories are taking stock.

The party's leader in Wales, Andrew RT Davies, being clear on X: "Let's be frank, we've let a lot of people down."

We've seen some 611 seats declared already - so who's left?

Perhaps the most notable is Liz Truss, with South West Norfolk still in the balance.

Here's how the exit poll projected that seat…

Reports suggest that the former prime minister may be being run close by the Labour Party this time round.

It is historically the Conservatives' 11th safest seat.

The 49-day ex-prime minister has represented the constituency since 2010.

Jeremy Hunt has pulled off a dramatic Houdini act – the great escape of the election campaign.

When the exit poll forecast a Labour landslide and massive Tory losses, Lib Dems at his count were hopeful of pulling off their most spectacular victory of the night.

But when the result was declared at 4.40am, Mr Hunt had scraped home with a majority of 891 votes after a number of recounts.

"You came here to see my demise!" the chancellor told me, grinning, as he left the count in the Edge Leisure Centre in Haslemere.

A rare remaining Tory 'grown-up'

His great escape is a stunning personal triumph and reward for the relentless hard work and campaigning in his new Godalming and Ash constituency over the past six weeks.

Defeat had been widely predicted, and he'd even warned his children: "Daddy might not be chancellor, he may not be an MP after the election."

Mr Hunt would have been by far the biggest Tory casualty and the first chancellor to lose his seat in a general election, an unenviable record.

In interviews during the campaign, Mr Hunt predicted his seat would probably be won or lost by the Conservatives by 1,500 votes or fewer.

That prediction of a slender majority turned out to be spot on.

Now, with so many Tory cabinet ministers and senior backbenchers either losing their seat or standing down, Mr Hunt will be one of the few "grown-ups" and senior figures left on the opposition benches.

In his victory speech, he said the Tories had lost the trust of the British people. He'll be a key figure in rebuilding that trust in opposition.

James Cleverly, who was the home secretary, has kept hold of his seat in Braintree, with 35.5% of the vote share.

On a night where 11 cabinet members have lost their seats, Mr Cleverly won a majority of 3,670 over his closest rival - the Labour Party.

But it is notable that Reform UK took 23% of the vote in the constituency, with 11,346 ballots and in third place.

The Liberal Democrats have equalled their highest-ever seat total of 62.

They last secured this many seats back in 2005 during the last Labour administration.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has been celebrating his party's results by dancing and singing to Sweet Caroline with supporters in London.

A record number of cabinet ministers have lost their seats in this election.

Here are the 11 that have been beaten:

  • Grant Shapps - defence secretary
  • Simon Hart - chief whip
  • Gillian Keegan - education secretary
  • Alex Chalk - justice secretary
  • Penny Mordaunt - Commons leader
  • Lucy Frazer - culture secretary
  • Johnny Mercer - veterans minister
  • Michelle Donelan - science, innovation and technology secretary
  • David Davies - Wales secretary
  • Victoria Prentis - attorney general
  • Mark Harper - transport secretary

Mark Harper, the former transport secretary, has lost his seat in the Forest of Dean to Labour - by a very small margin.

Matt Bishop, the Labour candidate, holds a majority of just 278 in the constituency.

This makes Mr Harper the 11th cabinet member to lose their seat in this election - a record number - on a disastrous night for the Conservatives.
