At weddings, the father of the bride's toast gets a lot of attention—but we're all for moms stepping in to give a mother-of-the-bride speech that brings the house down. If you're the mom of the woman of the hour and you've been asked to deliver a few remarks during your daughter's wedding reception, you probably feel honored, emotional, and a little overwhelmed. After all, helping your child plan their nuptials is no small feat—and adding on writing (and nailing) a heartfelt, poignant speech can feel like, well, a lot .

While we know moms are basically superhuman creatures with an endless array of skills and abilities, speech writing and public speaking can something that shakes even the heroes among us—not to mention the added flood of mixed emotions that will be present throughout the day.

But we're here to help you find the right words—and deliver them with ease—in the months leading up to the big day. In our mother-of-the-bride speech guide, you'll find a foolproof template, writing and delivery tips, thought starters for brainstorming, and examples to make your own. Even better: We tapped an expert—wedding planner Vanessa Vierra of Vanessa Noel Events—to walk you through the process of giving a pro-level mother-of-the-bride speech.

Below, find expert tips that will help you write—and deliver—the perfect toast on your daughter's big day.

Mother-of-the-Bride Speech Template

Just as all moms are unique, and no two mother-daughter relationships are alike, your mother-of-the-bride speech will be entirely personal to you and the bond you share. However, there are a few components that should be present in your toast. Here's a general outline to help you get started.

Acknowledge your guests.

Every great speech should start with a few words of gratitude for the people who have gathered to partake in the celebration with you. You can mix this into a full greeting to welcome guests if you are the first speech on the schedule of events.

Welcome your new son- or daughter-in-law.

No mother-of-the-bride speech would be complete without a warm welcome to their daughter's new partner. Honor your new son-in-law or daughter-in-law by making it clear that you feel you're gaining a new family member and that they are welcome. You should also nod to how they have changed or complemented your daughter for the better. "Speak to why the two are good for one another, their dynamic, and their support for one another," says Vierra. "If you don't know your daughter's partner or their relationship that intimately, use what you do know where you can. Say something like, 'She's always been such a hard worker and I know that working hard for this marriage will be no exception.'"

Another nice touch? "Thank and welcome your new daughter's new in-laws, too, if appropriate," adds Vierra. "It's always gracious to welcome your daughter's new spouse into the family, as well as welcome and thank your daughter's new in-laws. This is especially true if the blend of families also means a blend of cultures." This is also a nice time to express gratitude for your daughter's in-law's contributions to the event, whether they are purely emotional or financial. "If there have been other family members involved with planning or contributing financially, it is gracious to acknowledge that," explains Vierra. "For example, maybe the new spouse's parents hosted a welcome party the night before. In that case, it's gracious to mention the event and thank them for hosting."

Choose happy memories to share.

As you choose memories, focus on positive, happy moments. Telling a story that highlights how your daughter overcame something unpleasant or embarrassing shouldn't be shared on their wedding day. "While it's okay to poke a little fun innocently, it should always have a purpose in the storyline of your speech," notes Vierra. "If you tell a story about how your daughter was trouble in high school, it needs to come around to support an uplifting message about who she is today. Airing dirty laundry just for the sake of a laugh is never a good look!"

In that vein, another way into your speech is to "speak about your daughter in her adulthood in a way that ties back to the memories or stories you'll share later on," suggests Vierra.

Never mention your daughter's previous relationships or marriages, and don't talk about unfulfilled dreams. Only bring up the best memories of your daughter's life.

Highlight one or two big accomplishments.

Theoretically, the guests should already know what the bride does for a living. Reciting every success they've ever had, in detail, is completely unnecessary. You should, instead, express how proud you are of their accomplishments and highlight one or two.

Tell her how proud you are.

As you conclude your speech, "talk about how she's made you proud—for the guests, it's touching to hear and for your daughter, it's incredibly special," says Vierra.

End with a toast.

The best way to end your speech? Raise a glass to your daughter and her new partner and wish them all the best in married life, says Vierra—and remind them that you will always, without fail, be there to support the both of them, both individually and in the context of their marriage.

Mother-of-the-Bride Speech Writing Tips

Here are our best tips for writing your mother-of-the-bride speech, which will make eventually delivering it seamless.

Write your thoughts down on paper.

This momentous occasion is probably not the best time to wing it. Whether you use bullet points or an outline, make sure you pen everything you want to tell your daughter in your speech to avoid leaving out anything special. "Don't wing it, " explains Vierra. "Write it down and practice practice."

Think about your audience while you write.

"Keep in mind that you're speaking to a wildly varied mix of people. Your daughter's wedding guests might be a group comprised of professional colleagues, sorority sisters, childhood friends, neighbors, and her new spouse's distant family she's only just met," says Vierra. "Try to write in a way that can be enjoyed and understood by people at different ages, from different places, and with very different backgrounds."

Don't feel pressured to be funny.

Sure, humor is great—but if you're not a naturally funny person, don't push your limits on your daughter's most important day. Just be your sincere and honest self. The rest will follow, and your daughter will love it.

Avoid inside jokes.

You might have some amazing inside jokes that will make your daughter laugh, but no one else will find them funny. "Sharing memories and stories from childhood will naturally bring up special nuances of your relationship, but avoid jokes that remain unexplained or that would take too long to explain," adds Vierra.

Keep it short and sweet.

You're talking about your daughter, and we know you could probably go on about how amazing they are for hours, but a good rule of thumb is to limit your speech to three to five minutes. "Be thoughtful, but be concise," affirms Vierra. "This can be the hardest part, but I like to encourage a time limit of three minutes. This can be tough to hit if you're sharing memories and stories, but it's a great ballpark to shoot for—and never go over five!"

Mother-of-the-Bride Speech Delivery Tips

Lights, camera, action! When the big moment arrives, we have the tips you need to stay calm, cool, and collected while you deliver your mother-of-the-bride speech.

Practice your speech beforehand.

Write your mother-of-the-bride speech well in advance of the wedding so you’ll have plenty of time to practice it—this will help you better engage with your daughter and the room while you deliver it. "Practice so that you aren't reading the speech word for word from your note cards," shares Vierra. "Engagement with your daughter, her spouse, and the guests is important, so look up from your cards between sentences and make eye contact."

Increase the amount of time you practice your speech in the month before the wedding. No matter what the speech, the calmest of presenters are always the most practiced.

Hold the mic at your chin.

Yes, that close! "It's tempting to hold the mic down at your chest, especially if you're uncomfortable with a microphone, but a mic that's too far away creates major issues for your sound tech and can lead to feedback in the speakers," says Vierra. "Better yet, ask for a mic stand so you can be hands free and the mic is held at the proper height for you!"

Don't read your speech off your phone.

It's tempting, but don't read your speech from your phone, says Vierra. "It just looks bad in photos—plain and simple. I recommend writing (handwriting or typing it out) on 3x5 cards that are small enough to not be distracting and sturdy enough to not fold or flop—especially if you're at an outdoor venue!" she adds.

Remember to speak slowly, pause when necessary, and breathe.

If your nerves are starting to get to you, you might start speeding through your speech; to combat this, take a deep breath and remember that it’s alright to take a pause. Also, if you're a naturally fast talker, you'll need to speak in a way that feels deliberately slow, notes Vierra.

Pauses also aren't just for nerves—they're also for laughs. "If your speech has humor peppered in, wait for the laugh," explains Vierra. "Don't start on your next line until the laughter has died down."

Don't worry about crying.

This is one occasion that indisputably warrants tears—if you're afraid of getting choked up during your delivery, just remember no one will judge you for it. In fact, most people will think it's incredibly sweet and you just might make them need a tissue, too.

Mother-of-the-Bride Speech Thought Starters

Now that you have a slew of tips for writing your mother-of-the-bride speech, here are some questions to ask yourself to get the brainstorming process started.

  • Which of your daughter's qualities do you really want to highlight?
  • What's one of the best memories you have of raising your daughter?
  • When did you first know that their partner was "the one"?
  • What advice do you wish you'd heard from your mom on your wedding day?
  • What about their new marriage makes you the happiest?

Mother-of-the-Bride Speech Examples to Inspire Your Own

Does the mother of the bride give a speech? For these women, the answer was a resounding “Yes!” Get inspired with these actual toasts from loving moms.

Today is your wedding day. It's something a mother wishes and waits for from the time her daughter is born until she walks down the aisle.

"When Jewel was young she surrounded herself with lots of friends, some of whom are here today. They know our basement was always full with high school friends, just as your wedding is full of yours and Jason's friends today.

Time doesn't stand still; it is fleeting and it is amazing how quickly it passes. Like time, Jewel has never stood still. It seems like she is always running after one adventure after another. When her sister Mindy ran a marathon, Jewel had to keep up, so she started running. Mindy was content to say she checked a marathon off her bucket list, but Jewel had to keep on running, competing in a triathlon, and then an Ironman. Even getting her engagement ring was a race, a scavenger hunt adventure but still a race. This one she and Jason won together. Partners all the way.

Jewel and Jason, now it is your turn to embark on your own journey as a couple, to experience life with a loving partner. As you find your own route through life, remember to cherish each other. We know that through all the twists and turns of the road, you will support and care for each other with true love.

As you celebrate this wedding day, know it is not the best but the first of many blessed events in your lives together. We're thrilled you two have found the one for you. We wish you both joy, laughter, and love—from our hearts to yours.”— Eileen Roth

Thank you all for coming. I’m a strong mom, I have a strong daughter, and after this, I know I will need a strong drink.

"I would like to welcome Steve, and his parents Helen and Larry, and all of his wonderful, huge family into our family. I will not begin to mention all his brothers and sisters lest I forget one.

Steve: You are an amazing young man that I have grown to know and love. I met you after I fell skiing and I had cracked my ribs. I was on morphine and I was very happy...so please note that I am not always that crazy. Steve, when you asked to take me to lunch at my office, I knew that something was up. And it was—you asked to marry my daughter and we both cried. You have such a kind heart.

Adrienne: You are a strong, smart, and beautiful woman. I’m going to take this opportunity to apologize for the many things that I did with and to you while you were growing up. I’m sorry for many of them but not really for others, as they may have helped make you who you are today.

  • I am sorry for always giving you peanut butter for lunch every day...as we found out later that you were deathly allergic to peanuts.
  • I am sorry for dragging you to all the boys’ hockey and baseball games; however, you and Alysse retaliated by dragging them to all your dance recitals.
  • I am sorry for the overkill of health foods—especially quinoa. But on the bright side, you have become a fabulous cook. (And have now married a cook).
  • I am sorry that I made you follow me down the black diamond ski hills...but you have become a great skier.
  • I am sorry for taking you on all those crazy adventures—an impromptu helicopter ride; a million Walk of Life events; travel to England, Wales, California, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans...but hey, they were lots of fun.
  • I am sorry I made you watch all-night episodes of Gilmore Girls.
  • I am sorry for eating bags of BBQ chips...actually, that was just me.
  • I am sorry for taking you to so many dance workshops and involving you in many choreographies...but wow, you have become an accomplished dancer, actress, and teacher.

So, as a tribute to your dancing, I offer a musical toast to you and Steve. And the music is to ‘New York, New York’...the place where Steve proposed to you.”— Barbara Kennedy

“I want to thank everyone for being here celebrating Kayleigh and Adam; the Hodgins family, our family, and friends who have become family—welcome. Kayleigh’s father, her Derd, and I are tickled pink to host this beautiful evening.

As most of you know, Kayleigh faced physical challenges as a newborn and toddler but with every year, grew stronger and even more delightful. As she got older, she excelled in basketball and show choir, and happily graduated from FIDM. She then embarked on what promises to be a fulfilling career.

Kayleigh—it always has been and always will be an honor and absolute joy to be your mom. You light up any room just by being in it.

As a parent, you, of course, want your child to succeed in life—both personally and professionally. But one of the most satisfying rewards is seeing your child experience true love and happiness, which she has absolutely found with Adam. Thank you, Adam, for loving our girl, we’re thrilled you are part of our family.

Please join me in a toast to the bride and groom—congratulations! We all wish you the best for everything this new journey has to offer.” — Marla White

While every wedding is different, the mother of the bride typically delivers their speech during the  wedding reception  following the father of the bride's speech. In some instances—whether the father is deceased or unable to attend—the mother of the bride will kick off the wedding toasts by going first.

Focus on personal anecdotes from your daughter regarding how the two met or when they knew that they had found " the one ."

In this section, I’ll guide you through the framework that will shape your unforgettable mother of the bride speech, ensuring each element fits flawlessly with the next.

Begin With a Warm Welcome and Express Gratitude: Kick off your speech by greeting everyone in attendance. This friendly opening sets the tone while making your guests feel welcomed and involved. Take this time to express heartfelt thanks to all those who made this special day possible. Don’t forget to mention both families’ collaborative efforts!

Embrace the New Addition: Share your experience of meeting your daughter’s partner for the first time and the journey of getting to know them. Mention special moments or instances that made you realize they were the perfect match for your daughter. Finally, express your happiness in welcoming them into your family, emphasizing the joy of having them as a newfound son or daughter-in-law.

Offer Touching Wisdom & Advice: Drawing from your own life experiences and the love you have for your daughter, impart pearls of wisdom that will resonate with the couple. Keep it heartfelt and genuine, blending your unique insights with your hopes for their future.

With this blueprint in hand, craft your speech like a skilled architect shaping a masterpiece. Seamlessly blending emotions, humor, advice, and storytelling will create an unshakeable foundation that impresses all in attendance. Next let’s dissect each element one by one.

Creating a Compelling Introduction: First Impressions Matter

Ah, the power of first impressions! Your speech introduction sets the tone for everything that follows. So, let’s make sure it’s a showstopper, shall we?

Remember to introduce yourself briefly as the mother of the bride. While most attendees will know who you are, it’s essential to set the context and lay a foundation for your stories and insights.

Offer a heartfelt welcome to all guests. This is your chance to give thanks for their presence and acknowledge any special guests who’ve traveled from afar.

Finally, express your gratitude towards everyone involved in organizing this beautiful event. A simple nod of appreciation goes miles in setting an enchanting atmosphere steeped in love!

Adding these punchy elements ensures every single person is on board and ready for the unforgettable journey that lies ahead. And just like that, you’ve nailed an irresistible introduction!

Example Snippets for Speech Introduction

“Ladies and gentlemen, have you ever tried keeping a secret for over 20 years? Well, let me tell you – it’s not easy! Now that I have your attention – I’m Susan, Emily’s mom. Very soon, you’ll be in on the secret too. Thank you so much for coming together to rejoice in Emily and Michael’s union. Your presence brings warmth and joy to our hearts. A big shout-out to everyone who helped make today possible!”

Personalizing Your Speech: How to Share Your Unique Bond with the Bride

Are you ready to pull at the heartstrings? During this part of your speech, it’s time to dive deep and put your one-of-a-kind bond with your daughter on center stage. So, let’s explore the secrets of making it extra memorable!

Don’t be afraid to reveal some funny stories or embarrassing moments! Laughter, after all, brings people together. Just be mindful of boundaries and avoid oversharing – we want relatable charm without crossing the line.

Consider weaving in a theme or motif that represents your special connection. Perhaps it’s baking cookies during holidays, bonding over rom-coms, or dancing in the rain – weave this thread of closeness through your speech for an emotional punch.

Example Snippets about the Bride

“From the moment Sarah first stubbornly tied her shoelaces at age 3, I knew I had a fiercely independent girl on my hands. She carried that determination through every piano recital, soccer match, and late-night study session. And now standing beside her, we have Jack – the perfect partner for our strong-willed, unstoppable Sarah.”

“Growing up, Amanda spent countless hours in the kitchen with me, creating culinary masterpieces (and sometimes disasters). Our apron-clad adventures symbolize more than just cooking – they represent laughter, teamwork, and love. Today, as she starts a new chapter with James by her side, I’m joyously confident that they’ll be able to whip up their own recipe for happiness.”

Making Room for New Family Members: Celebrating the Groom and His Family

Share your thoughts about meeting the groom for the first time – what stood out? Maybe it was his warm smile, impressive cooking skills, or reassuring presence. People adore hearing these heartfelt first impressions.

Celebrate the character traits that make him a perfect partner for your daughter. Acknowledge how he complements her strengths and supports her growth, illustrating why they truly are a match made in heaven.

Show gratitude towards the groom’s family for raising such an incredible person. Express positivity about forging stronger ties between both families as you embark on this united journey ahead.

With these heartfelt acknowledgements in place, you’ll beautifully showcase the blossoming love and harmony between two families – leaving not a single dry eye among your listeners!

Example Snippets about the Groom

“In Sam, Claire has found not only her rock but also her biggest cheerleader. Sam’s unwavering support during Claire’s career aspirations has shown us time and again how they bring out the best in each other. To Sam’s beautiful family – thank you for shaping this incredible young man we’re lucky enough to call family now.”

Balancing Emotion and Humor: How to Make Them Laugh and Cry

Who doesn’t love a good laugh or a tear-jerking moment ? But striking the right balance between emotions and humor in your speech can be a bit tricky. Fear not, fellow speech-givers – we’re here to help you hit that sweet spot effortlessly.

Weave emotion into your narrative through heartfelt sentiments, emphasizing how proud you are of your daughter’s journey and accomplishments. Let those tears flow openly – this authenticity invites others to experience the depth of your love.

Combine humor and emotion for powerful storytelling by juxtaposing these elements. For example: introduce a hilarious childhood memory that highlights her growth, then contrast it with how far she’s come today in her personal and professional life.

Lastly, timing is crucial for humor. Know when to insert a witty remark amidst emotional moments to break any possible tension without overshadowing sentiments.

Example Snippets of Funny Lines

“Did you know Jenny was voted ‘Most Likely to Marry a Prince’ in high school? But instead, she found her King… of Dad Jokes! Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Tom, the guy who swept Jenny off her feet with laughter – and an encyclopedic knowledge of the most obscure movie lines.”

“Growing up, Amy had an uncanny ability to lose her keys – seriously, we’d practically tear the house apart looking for them. We’ve learned to embrace this quirk over time, but luckily now we have Dave joining our key-hunting crew. As a master improviser and avid gadget-collector, he’s already armed with GPS trackers on every set of keys!”

Tips for Delivering a Heartfelt Mother of the Bride Speech

So, you’ve crafted your speech with loving care – now it’s time to deliver it like a pro! Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you convey that heartfelt message and make an impact on everyone in the room.

Start by rehearsing your speech out loud. Practice makes perfect, and familiarizing yourself with the flow will boost your confidence come the special day.

Remember to breathe and pace yourself on stage. It’s normal for emotions to flare high, but centering yourself with deep breaths helps ground you and prevent rushing through those precious words.

Embrace eye contact with the audience – especially your daughter and her partner. This creates an intimate connection that draws listeners into your stories.

It’s okay if tears make an appearance; it attests to the love you have for your daughter. Keep tissues on hand just in case – happy tears should flow freely during such moments!

Don’t forget to use pauses for emphasis or laughter breaks, giving your speech natural rhythm as well as allowing guests the chance to enjoy those humorous anecdotes.

And lastly, be authentic! Speak from the heart, revel in vulnerability, and let your sincerity shine. When you’re genuine and true to yourself, delivering a heartfelt mother of the bride speech becomes second nature – making memories that last a lifetime!

Dos and Don’ts: Mistakes to Avoid While Crafting Your Speech

Okay, lovebirds! We’ve covered a lot of ground, but there’s more. Time to talk about those hidden traps that can trip even the most eloquent of speakers. Keep these dos and don’ts in mind so your mother of the bride speech remains flawless!

2. Time it right: Aim for about 5-7 minutes – long enough to convey your heartfelt message but not so lengthy that guests start losing interest.

1. Overshare: Avoid diving into super-private or potentially embarrassing content. This moment celebrates love, not airing dirty laundry. Also, rambling on and on tests everyone’s patience. Aim for five to seven minutes and keep editing till it fits!

2. Get too inside-jokey: While including humor is great, keep it inclusive so that everyone shares in the laughter together, without feeling left out.

By keeping these tips in mind while crafting and delivering your speech, you’re sure to leave a lasting impression on the hearts of all who listen!

Writing a tribute speech is one of the best ways to memorialize your mom. Recognizing your mom's legacy is a gift to one of the most important people in your life. A speech is a great way to praise her and a great way of laying her life to rest.

Jump ahead to these sections:

Step 1: do your research, step 2: think about impact, step 3: pick thematic anecdotes, step 4: be truthful, step 5: deliver your speech, sample outline speech for mom.

For most people, though, writing and delivering a speech is a little scary. How do you start? How do you keep from breaking down? How do you conquer fears of public speaking?

We’ve included a list of tips, below. You can build your narrative from the ground so you can deliver a poignant, emotional speech.

If writing a tribute speech is just one of your responsibilities after a death, check out our post-loss checklist for some help through the process.

Even if you and your mother were best friends, it’s still a good idea to confirm the facts. Family stories and blurred memories over the years can change hard facts. Make sure to verify details, even if you’re sure you know the answer. In most cases, Google can’t help you. Look through mementos to find your answers. Diplomas, marriage certificates, and photos can help you confirm most details.

If you don’t have access to these mementos, or your mother didn’t save anything, try something else. Other family members may have stories and mementos that you don’t. Fact-check with many people to help you gather enough information for a foundation.

Don’t make the mistake of writing a tribute speech like a biography. You don’t need to write a third-person essay. Focus on the relationship you had with your mother and how that changed you.

Share your final wishes, just in case.

Create a free Cake end-of-life planning profile and instantly share your health, legal, funeral, and legacy decisions with a loved one.

What do you want to emphasize? How do you want your audience to feel when your speech is over? It can feel daunting to try to condense an entire life into a short speech. You’re faced with so many memories, it can be hard to pick one, but make it simple: Decide how you want your audience to feel.

There are a few common results that you might want. You may want people to feel grateful for their mothers. To achieve this result, you could emphasize the role she held in keeping the family together. You may want people to feel impressed by the type of person your mother was. To do this, you could share memories of her tireless volunteer work. You may not have something specific in mind, though.

Sometimes, grief is so overwhelming that all you want to do is share what your mother meant to you. If that’s what you want, think of memories that show your close relationship. Consider what your mother did for you, taught you, or provided you with. After all, mothers leave an indelible footprint.

When you’re selecting memories, it’s easy to be vague. After all, being specific means spending a lot of time living in memories. After a recent death, your first instinct might be to avoid this — but it won't help you through it.

It doesn't help people who are grieving with you to give vague generalities. They want to know details, ones that couldn’t apply to every mother in the world. Tell specific stories. What traits do you highlight? When you think of your mother’s personality, what stands out? You might want to talk about what your mom meant to you. It’s up to you to dig deep and think about why your mom mattered so much.

Her sense of compassion might have changed your outlook on the world. You could always depend on her and her reliability structured your childhood. Once you’ve discovered your “why,” pick out traits. Then spend some time recounting your memories. Which ones illustrate the traits you want to highlight?

When you pick your stories, keep them streamlined. No one wants to listen to a speech that meanders through someone’s life. Choose two or three traits. This will condense your story for the audience. Streamline your stories in the retelling, too. Condense them into a few poignant sentences for a great way to hook your audience.

Whether you're speaking a funeral , memorial service, or her retirement party, chances are that most people in the room knew your mother. Not everyone has a great relationship with his or her mother. Some people never knew their mother well. Others had a complicated relationship and you may struggle to share good qualities.

This is okay! Not everyone has a "Gilmore Girls" relationship with his or her mom. Here are a few options if you're struggling:

  • Write the speech. If she had a drastic, public issue, such as alcoholism, most people attending already know. Dragging it into the light and expanding on it will make people uncomfortable. Using a tribute speech as a soapbox for your issues isn’t appropriate.
  • Focus on the positive. If you can’t, though, it’s appropriate to refuse the offer to deliver a tribute speech. Not saying anything is better than lying or making it sound like someone was a better person than they were.

Some people, gifted with words, offer anecdotes and attention-grabbing openers. They’re made for writing a speech. But do you feel terror at the mere thought of giving a speech?

There are a few simple tips to follow to ensure that your speech goes well. One of the most important tips is giving your opening hook a time to shine. If you remember college essays, you remember the importance of an attention grabber. Rather than starting with a boring sentence, craft an attention-grabber. This will inform and excite listeners. Wait for the audience to settle down and pay attention before you start speaking.

It’s important to come prepared, too. Bring tissues and a bottle of water to help you through your speech. Bring notes, too. If you want to type out your entire speech beforehand, do so. If not, try writing out cue cards.

Struggling with how to craft your speech? Here’s an example outline for you. Customize or rearrange to fit your unique needs!

Introduction: Start with something that will grab the audience’s attention. It could be a fact about your mother that’s surprising, one that no one else knew. It could be a mild joke if the mood is appropriate. Once you’ve snagged the audience’s attention, introduce the basic facts about your mother. State your relationship, too, so people know who you are.

Overview: Provide a birds-eye view of what your relationship with your mother was like. How did her upbringing influence the kind of person she was? How did she pass that onto you? This is the place to highlight the traits you remember most about your mother.

Anecdotes: The anecdotes you select go here. Share your memories, with an emphasis on the traits you discussed above. Stating those traits serve as a thesis statement and a road map through the rest of your speech.

Influence: Depending on how many anecdotes you shared, you can talk about her in two ways. You can do so after each separate anecdote. If you only have one or two, you may save this for the end. Talk about how these character traits changed your life. Illustrate them with stories.

Why Your Speech Matters

It’s easy to feel like a tribute speech is impossible to craft. It seems like there’s always someone who could do it better. But a tribute speech serves as a personalized gift, one of the only ones you can give after your mother dies.

Here, we’ll go through all you need to know about Mother of the Bride speeches so that you can confidently raise a glass to your daughter (now a stunning bride!) and her partner on their big day.

Also, we have compiled some of the best Mother-of-the-Bride Speech Templates for you to get some inspiration to deliver the most passionate Mother of the speech ever.

So, let’s get started…

A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing a Memorable Speech for the Mother of the Bride or Groom

Writing a heartfelt mother of the bride speech may seem like a task, especially when writing is not your cup of tea. However, with the right tips, perfect wording, and a positive attitude, you will be able to rock at your daughter’s wedding.

So, here is our step-by-step guide to crafting an unforgettable speech for the Mother of the bride. Take a look…

STEP 1: Start by giving some background on yourself

Undoubtedly, most of the wedding guests would know your name. However, it is imperative to begin your speech by introducing yourself to one and all present at the wedding. Begin by offering a straightforward hello or another form of greeting. After that, you can introduce yourself and state that you are the Mother of the bride.

STEP 2: Express gratitude to the guests for attending

Delivering a mother of the bride speech is not a straightforward task. You need to consider each and every person present at the wedding. So, don’t forget to thank them all for attending the wedding.

Yes, after you have introduced yourself, it’s now time to express your gratitude to everyone who made the effort to be at the wedding with you. Everybody, from your local guests to out-of-town guests, deserves a warm welcome in the speech. So, say a few words of thanks to those who have come to share in the festivities.

STEP 3: Talk about your daughter

It’s now time to talk about how proud you are of her and how amazing she has turned out to be. You can even provide an anecdote or reminiscence about your daughter. Pick positive anecdotes to recount. Make sure to pick only the positive and joyful events to share. Don’t bring up your daughter’s failed relationships or marriages. Also, avoid talking about her unrealized ambitions or any painful or embarrassing memories from her past.

Pro Tip: Keep the conversation focused on the positive moments in your daughter’s life. You could talk about an activity that the two of you like doing together or reflect on a sweet story from her younger years. Doing so will help you deliver a well-synchronized speech.

STEP 4: Talk about the groom

After talking about your daughter, you can now talk about the groom. In this part of your speech, you will need to formally introduce your new son-in-law to the family and wedding guests. Welcoming your new son-in-law with open arms is a great way to show them how much you care for them.

Make this part a little warm by telling them what it is about the groom that you adore the most. Aside from that, also share the reasons why you believe he is the ideal partner for your daughter and how grateful you are to have him in your life. Also, emphasize things that made you realize how they have influenced or enhanced your daughter for the better.

STEP 5: Talk about the couple’s relationship

After you have finished talking about your daughter and her partner separately, it is time to talk about them as a couple. Tell your guests why you think that they are a good match. You might talk about how you’ve seen their relationship develop and thrive over the years. You can even share a memory of the time when you first saw them both together. You can even share a sweet memory or something special that you have noticed about the two of them during the first meeting.

STEP 6: Bring the evening to a close by raising a glass to the newlyweds

Finally, you should ask all of the guests to toast the newlyweds by raising their glasses in honour of the happy pair. Keep in mind that you should extend your best wishes and congratulations to both of them and not just your daughter.

STEP 7: Let your emotions vent out

Of course, your daughter’s wedding is one of the most emotional moments. Getting teary or emotional is natural. You need not to hold your emotions back. In fact, most people will find it really touching, to the point that they may need a tissue themselves.

So, these are the seven steps that you need to follow in order to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime speech.

Pro Tip: If in between your speech, you feel like pausing, then pause! Sometimes, it happens that mothers do get emotional while giving the Mother of the Bride speech. However, it is OKAY to be emotional, to PAUSE, to RELAX! Take a deep breath and proceed! No one will think less of you, and in all likelihood, they may take this pause as a time to reflect on what you just stated.

Top 10 Tips to Delivering a Once-in-a-lifetime Mother Of The Bride Speech

The custom of the Mother of the bride giving a speech during her daughter’s wedding is becoming increasingly common. More and more mums are coming forward to make this part of the wedding epoch-making.

However, delivering a heartfelt mother of the bride speech may seem like a task. But with the tips outlined here, you will be able to give your best shot at your daughter’s wedding.

Scroll down to read all the tips…

TIP NO. 1: Jot it down

No matter how good your memory is, it’s always advised to jot down whatever you’re thinking. Don’t rely on your memory; instead, write everything down in advance, either in bullet points or an outline.

Write down everything you want to add, from special memories to words of wisdom on love for the newlyweds. Putting down your ideas on paper helps you to brainstorm them that will naturally flow during the event.

TIP NO. 2: Prepare your speech in advance

Know that Mother of the bride speech is an important part of the wedding. Hence, it is advised not to wait for the last to prepare your speech. Make sure to write your speech several months before the wedding. It is because you will need to practice it. Also, there will be several things that you may want to incorporate or eliminate from your speech during all those months.

Understand that a beautifully crafted speech is always the result of a lot of hard work, effort, and many months. It’s not an overnight job; trust that!

TIP NO. 3: Practice it aloud

Again, only writing an amazing mother of the bride speech is not enough. In fact, you will need to practice it before actually delivering it in front of your guests.

Practice it aloud

Start by practicing the speech aloud on your own, then show it to a small group of close friends or family members. Make sure you hone your wedding speech in the weeks leading up to the big day. Practice your speech multiple number of times in the month leading up to the wedding. Remember that practicing consistently makes a person perfect! So, trust the power of practicing.

Pro Tip: If you are a shy person by default, then you may consider practicing it in front of the mirror. Practicing in front of a mirror will help you work on a lot of other things as well, including your body language. Also, practicing aloud in front of a mirror will make you more familiar with what it is you want to convey.

TIP NO. 4: Just be genuine

Undoubtedly, Mother of the bride speech funny can help you make the atmosphere light. However, if you’re not a naturally funny person, don’t try to force it. Know that your daughter’s wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event that you would not want to ruin for any reason, including your poor sense of humour. Therefore, it’s advised to be genuine and truthful.

TIP NO. 5: Avoid using jargon

Using jargon in your speech is not at all advised. There is no point that only a few people are understanding what exactly you say. It’s always a good idea to keep your Mother of the Bride speech simple. People will be able to understand it without much effort. Aside from that, avoid using references that only a small subset of the audience would get.

TIP NO. 6: Be succinct and to the point

You might want to talk about your kid for hours. However, keeping your speech to the point is always a good idea. Your Mother of the bride speech funny or normal, may not exceed 5 minutes.

Know that the speech you will give as the Mother of the bride does not have to be extremely complicated. Speaking from the heart will be more than enough to get your point across. Most importantly, your daughter would be able to connect with your emotions. She will be able to feel the emotion that you are trying to convey, which is what it’s all about in the end.

TIP NO. 7: Incorporate some humour, but steer clear of any personal jokes

Incorporating humour in your speech or giving a mother of the bride speech funny is a good idea. Of course, adding a joke to your speech will add a special touch to it. However, avoid making any jokes that could be taken the wrong way or hurt someone’s feelings.

It’s also preferable to steer clear of private gags that a wider audience would utterly miss. Moreover, including a reference that only your daughter would get may seem like a cute way to show her how much you care, but it could make the other guests feel awkward.

TIP NO. 8: Take the most relevant anecdotes

You might want to speak about each of your daughter’s achievements and memories. However, it is suggested to take the most relevant ones. Usually, it includes childhood stories of your kid, anecdotes from when you first met your now-in-law, feelings about the couple, and so on.

TIP NO. 9: Follow a proper structure

Make sure to have a point-by-point outline of your speech. It will help you fill in the gaps and create transitions. People will be able to associate with it very easily. It should begin with your introduction, followed by a welcome and thanks to all guests present at the wedding, a discussion of your daughter, including some stories about her childhood and accomplishments, a greeting and thanks to your son-in-law for joining your family, and the raising of the roast.

TIP NO. 10: Steer clear of any subject that can offend

Mother of the bride speeches should never include any offensive, harsh, or unpleasant content. It may include things about her past relationships, broken marriages, or anything that could hurt her feelings.

It is best to steer clear of bringing up any subjects that could be perceived as awkward or sensitive. Maintain a humorous and optimistic attitude while concentrating on the couple.

[Talk about your first impressions of the couple (especially the groom), and anything else you found interesting or relatable about them.]

I’ve never been more pleased with my life than I am right now; my daughter has grown from a beautiful child into a beautiful young woman, and I know she and [groom’s name] will have a long and happy life together.

[You can now share a relatable anecdote about your daughter from her childhood or adulthood that helped you admire her and build a strong connection with her.]

Undoubtedly, today is the happiest day of our lives, and I wish you two a life filled with joy and happiness! You two are about to embark on an incredible adventure, and I hope that it brings you nothing but joy and fulfilment. I have no doubt that the two of you are going to make the best of it! Enjoy a long and prosperous marriage.

[You can now conclude your Mother of the Bride speech by adding a hilarious anecdote from your own experience or a light joke about the groom.]

I’d appreciate it if you could all stand and raise a toast to the happy couple.

Let’s now take a look at the frequently asked questions related to Mother of the Bride Speech. Here we go…

1. When is the best time to start writing Mother of the Bride speech?

It’s advised to start writing your speech well in advance (three to six months prior to the wedding). This way, you will get enough time to prepare your speech and give your best shot on the BIG DAY of your daughter.

2. When is the perfect time for the Mother of the Bride to make a toast?

As customary, the Mother of the Bride gives a speech at the wedding reception after the cocktail hour but prior to the serving of dinner.

However, there are exceptions, such as the groom’s father is not present or passed away when the bride’s mother may give the first toast. The Mother of the bride may also choose to deliver her speech during the rehearsal dinner instead of the wedding itself (if the couple wishes so). So, it is about what exactly the bride and groom want. It is advised to talk to the couple well in advance about the wedding details.

3. What if I have never met the groom in person? What shall I write about him in the speech?

Well, in that case, you can speak to your daughter and ask a few details about him, especially how he is as a person – how she feels when with him, and so on. Knowing all these details in advance can help you incorporate the right details about the groom in the speech.

Tell engaging stories about how your daughter and her fiancé met or realized they’re perfect for each other.

4. How long should a speech given by the mother of the bride be?

Of course, we understand that you would want to share every detail about your child in your speech. However, the rule of thumb is to keep your speech as succinct and to the point as possible. A mother-of-the-bride speech need only be between three and five minutes in length. You can add all the most relevant details in your speech and make it the most memorable one that your daughter would love for sure!

4 Mother of the Groom Wedding Speech Samples

So your son has asked you to speak at his wedding…but you don’t know where to start! No worries, below we’re sharing four mother of the groom wedding speech samples, from the short and sweet to the hilarious or religious, so you can find the perfect words for your own speech. Plus, we’re sharing the six-part structure to the perfect parent speech and seven tips to ensure you nail it on reception night!

Ready? Let’s write that mother of the groom speech!

Heads up: While this post is directed at mothers of grooms, our advice, tips and examples below will apply to all parents of the couple getting married. Since not all weddings have grooms – and not all grooms have mothers – these speech skills are for everyone.

mother of the bride, mother of the groom speech, wedding speech

What should I say in my son’s wedding speech?

Here is the basic structure for any good parent speech at their child’s wedding:

Part 1: Introduction

Introduce yourself! Tell the crowd your name and your relationship to the couple. If it’s a fairly small wedding you can include a caveat like “As most of you know, I’m Oliver’s mom,” since most people will know who you are. You may also want to welcome everyone to the wedding, but this is often only appropriate if you’re hosting the wedding (aka paying for it).

Part 2: Words about your child

Next, share some words about your son. This section should be a few sentences about how happy you are for your son, how proud you are of him, and maybe a short story that highlights your special mother-son relationship.

Part 3: Words about your child’s partner

Remember, this speech isn’t all about your son! You also want to spend some time talking about your son’s new spouse. Welcome them to the family, talk about how you knew they were the one, and mention what traits you love most about them.

Part 4: Story about the couple

While it can be tempting in a mother of the groom speech to just tell stories about your son growing up, save those stories and focus instead on the newlyweds as a couple. Do you have a favourite memory with both of them? Was there a particular moment when you knew they were meant to be? Maybe a sweet story about their first date or engagement?

Ideally, you want to choose a story that is short and sweet, that reflects who the couple is, and is told from your point of view. It would be odd for you to tell their engagement story if it didn’t involve you, just like it would be cringe-worthy to tell a story that embarrasses your son or his new spouse. Don’t overthink this. Any sweet memory you’ve shared with the couple will do!

Part 5: Marriage advice and well wishes

As you’re starting to wrap up your speech, you may want to share some words of wisdom for the newlyweds’ future together. This can be based on your own marriage or marriage advice you’ve heard. Again, don’t overthink this! If you don’t have any sage wisdom to share, you can simply say a sentence or two wishing your son and his new spouse all the best.

Part 6: End with a toast

The best way to end any wedding speech is with a toast. This is where you will ask all of the guests to join you in raising a glass to the happy newlyweds!

wedding toast, wedding speech, young hip and married

When does the mother of the groom wedding speech happen?

Parent speeches usually happen during the reception as part of the speech line-up. Depending on what your son is planning, he may ask you to open the speeches or speak somewhere in the middle. You may even close the speeches, but often the newlywed couple makes the last speech so they can thank everyone else for speaking.

Make sure you check in with the couple about exactly when you’re speaking so you’re prepared. Find out what time your speech is scheduled for and who you’re speaking after, just in case the schedule is delayed. That way, you can make sure your drink is topped up and you’re not in the bathroom when it’s time to give your speech!

Does a mother of the newlyweds have to speak at the wedding?

No, wedding speeches are not mandatory. Not all couples have speeches at their reception and not all couples want their parents to take part in those speeches. And even if your child does ask you to speak, you can always say no. (However, we hope you don’t!)

Traditionally, only men spoke at weddings. It was the father of the bride, the groom and the best man who gave speeches. These days, speeches are opening up to folks from both families and of all genders, but it’s still mostly men we hear from. With the father of the bride traditionally getting the spotlight role of walking the bride down the aisle , we love the idea of letting moms speak at the reception. More women’s voices in weddings please!

If you’re nervous about speaking at the wedding, check out some of our tips below. Remember that this is just a short speech delivered in front of people who love you and your child. If you think you’ll need some support at the mic, consider asking another family member to give the speech with you. Try not to let your nerves stand in the way of this special moment!

Heartfelt mother of the groom wedding speech sample.

Family and friends, I stand before you today with a heart full of joy and gratitude as the mother of the groom. This is a momentous occasion, and I couldn’t be happier to celebrate the love that has brought us all together.

I have watched my son grow into the incredible man he is today. From a young age, he has always been compassionate, caring, and thoughtful. He has a heart of gold, and I am so proud of the person he has become.

And then, along came [Partner’s Name]. It was clear from the very beginning that they were the missing piece to our family puzzle. Their warmth, kindness, and unwavering support have brought so much happiness into our lives, and I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect partner for my son.

I remember the day my son introduced us to [Partner’s Name]. The way their eyes lit up when they spoke about their shared dreams and aspirations was truly magical. From that moment, it was evident that they were destined to be together. Through thick and thin, they have shown us the strength of their love, always finding laughter and joy in each other’s company.

As my son embarks on this incredible journey called marriage, I want to offer a piece of advice that has guided my own marriage: Always communicate openly and honestly with each other. Listen with your hearts, be patient, and never forget to cherish the little moments.

If you will all join me in raising a glass to [Groom’s Name] and [Partner’s Name], two remarkable individuals who have found their forever love in each other. May your journey together be filled with laughter, adventure, and an abundance of love. Cheers!

7 tips for an awesome mother of the groom wedding speech

1. write your speech down on paper.

Your wedding speech should be written down on paper. Don’t try to memorize it, don’t make it up on the spot and don’t read it off your phone. Take the time to write or type your speech out onto a piece of paper for you to read and reference. This is the best way to guarantee a smooth speech delivery and it looks best in photos.

2. Practice your wedding speech

Just because you’re not memorizing it doesn’t mean you don’t need to practice your wedding speech. Practice saying your speech out loud in front of a mirror so you’re comfortable with all of the words. This will give you added confidence on the big day!

3. Include your spouse (if appropriate)

If appropriate, include your spouse in your speech. You may want to give the speech together, each saying different parts, or just have them stand next to you while you speak. If your relationship isn’t one where you’d like to give a speech together, you can still reference your spouse or your family in your speech.

4. Keep it short

Your wedding speech should be 2-3 minutes long. That’s the sweet spot for wedding speeches – any longer and people get bored, any shorter and people might blink and miss it. Aim for 2-3 minutes while writing and time yourself when you practice so you know how long your speech is.

5. Skip the embarrassing stories

You may have joked with your son that you were going to share his naked baby photos at his wedding but when it comes to your speech, keep the embarrassing stuff out. A funny little story is okay but anything that is going to make your son or his new spouse uncomfortable should not be included.

6. Mention your son’s new spouse and their family

We included this in the structure of a speech above but it bears repeating: Don’t forget to mention your son’s new spouse! So many mother of the groom speeches only focus on the groom with no mention of the person he’s marrying. Remember, this isn’t all about your son; this is about his marriage. Take the time to highlight your new child-in-law, speak directly to them in your speech, and make them and their family feel welcome.

7. Prepare for emotions

Many parents say they don’t want to give a speech at their child’s wedding because they fear they’ll get too emotional. But rather than letting that stop you from speaking, take some time to prepare for it in advance. By practicing your speech at home, you’ll be more comfortable with your words and the emotions they bring up. You can also practice grounding exercises and bring tissues with you to the podium. Plus, who doesn’t love a photo of a tearful mother-son hug?

mother of the bride speech tips

  • Arrange and document your thoughts One of the first rules of writing a short and sweet mother of the bride speech is organization. Keep your thoughts organized by documenting them on a piece of paper or notebook. This way, you don’t forget the things you would say, and it helps you practice better.
  • Keep it short but informative A speech from the mother of the bride shouldn’t be longer than minutes. But it could be as short as three minutes. So ensure your speech is short and informative. You don’t have to repeat words and make too many jokes as fillers. Guests would lose interest and turn to other things. Below are some tips for constructing a unique body of the speech.

Think about:

  • Extol virtues Talk about your daughter’s great qualities and things that make her stand out from others. Her selflessness (with examples), empathetic nature, and situations that she turned around. Her friends and siblings are troves of information.
  • Reference her childhood Take Memories from her childhood, especially if she was a happy baby. Kids do the funniest things, so relate unforgettable scenarios.
  • Complement things you see Reiterate the beauty of the day and the details that went into creating the wedding venue. The decor, floral arrangement, theme, palette, and even the location. You should also talk about the bride and how stunning she looks.
  • Talk about the groom Tell the guests that your daughter is in good hands because of certain qualities. Talk about the groom’s qualities and when you knew he was good for your daughter. Welcome him to the family one more time and remind him of your love.
  • Pass down knowledge Give some advice to your daughter and her husband. It could be something as old as time that your mother passed down to you. It could also be advice from your experience in life or marriage.
  • Lastly, practice your speech several times by reading it aloud. Also, edit and make your final corrections, then print and save.

Don’ts

  • Do not make it too formal Loosen up a bit and don’t make it too formal. Give your speech like you’re talking to a friend. Throw in some jokes to break the ice and smile a lot.
  • Do not pay big attention to yourself or your guests Focus your speech on the new couple. The spotlight isn’t on you or the guests at this time.
  • Do not make it too long Keep your speech brief and sweet so as not to bore the guests.
  • Do not mention any exes of your daughter Since the wedding is about the new couple, make no mention of the past. No exes, bad relationship experiences, or reminiscing.

What To Say If You Do Not Know The Groom?

There are situations where the bride’s mom doesn’t meet the groom until the wedding day. In such cases, speak of the groom through your daughter’s eyes. Talk about the beautiful things she told you about him and why she fell in love with him.

  • Welcome guests and newlyweds Welcome everyone who made out time to be at the wedding. Appreciate guests, family, friends, and even the couple. They have come to share in your joy and deserve to feel important.
  • Share some stories about the bride Regale the guests with beautiful stories about the bride, especially the qualities that make her tick. You may also share funny stories from her childhood that will give the guests a good belly laugh.
  • Say some words about the groom Say some good things about the groom. Talk about your personal evaluation of the groom, why you love him, and how you met him. The guests would love to know why you feel he is good for your daughter. Also, give him a vote of confidence and welcome him to the family.

Mother of the Bride Speech at a Rehearsal Dinner Example

The mother of the bride’s speech at rehearsal dinner focuses on the fairy tale that’s your daughter’s life. Tell the guests that you’re excited about the upcoming wedding. Talk about your daughter’s qualities and accomplishments while emphasizing the relationship she shares with her daddy. Lastly, welcome the groom and talk to the guests you’re convinced he’ll make her happy. Lastly, wish them a happy married life in advance and make a toast in that regard.

Hi everyone! I am _, the mother of_. I am so happy to see my daughter’s burning eyes, I am so glad to see that she is happy and has met the man of her dreams. What more could a mother want? _ is a kind, sweet and simply charming girl, she has been like that since childhood and is now. The happiness of my daughter is the most important thing in my life and in the life of her father. Today at this rehearsal dinner, I was finally convinced that _ is the one who can fill the life of my little girl with bright colors and romantic moments and make it look like a fairy tale!
  • Be unique Be yourself when giving the speech. Smile genuinely, don’t be under pressure to say funny things. Speak the way you’d do in a friendly conversation. Also, while we know every child is the best, bring a twist to your speech that eliminates the cliche. Let your words come from the heart and mean them. Only then will the audience connect.
  • Don’t do the thankyous Try not to steal the groom’s thunder by doing the thank yous. Welcome the guests and leave it at that.
  • Be emotional It’s okay to break down when giving your speech. After all, your daughter is setting off on her own. However, avoid the drama and stay in control. Don’t be afraid of being vulnerable, but don’t over-stretch it.
  • Include the new inlaws Mention the in-laws in your speech because you’re also gaining a new family. If they made contributions towards the wedding, show gratitude by saying some sweet things about them. Mention how loving they are, the way you get along and all.
  • Don’t overstate your daughter’s accomplishments It is beautiful to have a daughter who makes you proud. But her wedding isn’t the place to list out her complete CV. Keep your speech concise and get it moving.
  • Add humor Throw in a few jokes that will give the guests a good belly laugh. Maybe when you made your girl eat her vegetables as a kid and things in that line. Let the guests know the bride is a happy woman.
  • Relax into the speech No tension, relax, be a natural, and watch your confidence skyrocket.

Mother Of The Bride Speech Guide with Examples

A Mother of the Bride speech isn’t among the age-old traditions, but it is becoming a more popular theme throughout the wedding world. If this seems like something fitting for your family, take a peek at our quick and easy go-to mother-of-the bride speech guide. This guide is sure to get you started on the perfect structure and words of love and wisdom for your mother of the bride speech.

A QUICK OVERVIEW OF A MOTHER OF THE BRIDE SPEECH

The mother of the bride’s speech or toast is becoming more commonplace during weddings in our modern-day times. It may occur at a wedding breakfast/brunch or at the wedding itself and can prove to be quite emotional. And there are many reasons for a bride’s mom to be included in the wedding speeches.

A mother of the bride may be tasked with speaking at a wedding if her husband (father of the bride) may have passed away, or her daughter’s father is absent from her life and won’t be performing a father of the bride speech. It’s important that someone speaks on the bride’s behalf…so here you go, mom – your time in the spotlight.

No matter the reason that you have been asked to present a mother of the bride toast, it is a huge honor. And you need to know what details to include and how to structure your mother of the bride toast , so it flows with ease and grace. Our handy mother of the bride speech guide is here to help. So, dismiss all those nerves and fears, and let’s get you started on a mother of the bride speech for the ages.

TIPS FOR GIVING GREAT MOTHER OF THE BRIDE SPEECH

  • Start by welcoming the guests to the wedding.
  • Introduce yourself / explain your relationship to the bride and why the speech is taking place (pay homage to a father who has passed, etc.)
  • Make it personal and share some incredible memories.
  • Gush about the bride in all aspects, from her character to her beauty.
  • Speak nicely about the relationship between the couple.
  • Finish off with well wishes and a toast.

HOW TO PULL OFF AN UNFORGETTABLE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE TOAST

To give a mother of the bride toast that’s unforgettable you have to prepare. Winging it may work, especially if you are comfortable with public speaking but it may cause you to forget to include important things. We know you want to present a speech that your daughter and her new spouse will be proud of. So, here are some tips on how to plan and prepare for your mother of the bride speech.

  • Write it down on paper (or save it in your phone)
  • Practice beforehand
  • Avoid inside jokes
  • Keep it short & sweet (experts say under 5 minutes)
  • Don’t worry about crying…it’s kind of expected
  • No politics
  • Aim for funny but don’t overdo it

WHO TO THANK IN YOUR MOTHER OF THE BRIDE SPEECH

It’s important to know the ins and outs of wedding speeches to make certain that you follow proper etiquette. For many of the traditional wedding speeches, there are general rules of who to thank. But luckily, the mother of the bride toast is different. Typically, the thank you’s are handled by the father of the bride and the groom himself. So, as the bride’s mom, all you have to do is focus on your daughter, her new spouse and wishes for the future.

But, if you are giving your toast in place of an absent father of the bride , thank you’s will be necessary. And we know that the worst thing you can do during a speech is to leave an important person out of your mother of the bride speech. After all, speeches generally happen in the early part of the reception so you definitely don’t want to skip anyone…that could result in a tense and awkward party.

Here’s a rundown of who you should thank in your mother of the bride speech when presenting it in lieu of an absent father.

IN PLACE OF FATHER OF THE BRIDE SPEECH

  • Thank wedding guests for coming
  • Thank and acknowledge the groom’s parents
  • Thank the wedding vendors
  • Mention loved ones who aren’t physically attending

That’s it! The groom is the one that is really responsible for all of the thank you’s, including the bridesmaids and groomsmen. So, keep your mother of the bride short, sweet, sentimental and yes, even a little emotional.

“As a parent, you, of course, want your child to succeed in life—both personally and professionally. But one of the most satisfying rewards is seeing your child experience true love and happiness, which she has absolutely found with Adam. Thank you, Adam, for loving our girl, we’re thrilled you are part of our family.

Please join me in a toast to the bride and groom—congratulations! We all wish you the best for everything this new journey has to offer.” —Marla White

HEARTFELT AND SENTIMENTAL MOTHER OF THE BRIDE SPEECH

If you are the sentimental type, you may want to stick to a heartfelt mother of the bride toast. The worst thing you can do when speaking in public is to try to be something you are not. So, embrace your sappy side and give the best heartfelt and sentimental mother of the bride speech. (just make sure to have some tissues handy)

“I’d like to welcome you all here today to celebrate the marriage of my daughter Dawn and James. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m the mother of the bride.

There’s a reason I’m doing this speech today, and that is because Dawn’s father is sadly no longer with us. For those who don’t know…[tell the guests the story]. I know he would be immensely proud of you and James today and would have loved to have been here making this speech and leading you down the aisle.

[If you are separated or divorced, then you might not want to tell the story]

I’d also like to take a moment to welcome James into the family and also his parents [XXXX] and [XXXX].

[Tell a story about their relationship].

[Tell a joke or two about the groom]

This is the proudest day of my life. I’m sure you’ll all agree to how stunning Dawn looks today. She’s grown from a beautiful little girl into a beautiful young woman, and I know she is going to have many happy years together with James.

[Tell a story about your daughter from her childhood and of your relationship with her – for inspiration, see some examples]

Today will be the happiest day of your lives, but you’ve got many more lying ahead of you. You’re heading on an amazing journey together, and I wish you every happiness. I know you are going to have so many happy years together.

[Add some examples and funny stories of your own experience, and some guidance for what might lie ahead – some jokes and funny thoughts are available to use]

I’d like you to be upstanding and toast the happy couple.”

FUNNY AND UPBEAT MOTHER OF THE BRIDE TOAST EXAMPLES

If you are a mom that has a spirited personality and loves to have fun, make sure to let that shine in your mother of the bride toast. Funny mother of the bride speeches are a huge hit with the guests and can help to break up some of the emotional stuff in other toasts. Here are some examples of things you can incorporate to keep your mother of the bride speech light-hearted and witty.

“My late husband would have loved to be here today giving this speech, although he’d be moaning about the cost of everything!

[On your daughter:]

I’ll be sad to see Dawn leave and become a wife, but I’ll be happy knowing my make-up will be where I left it and not where she moved it to.

Now that Dawn is a married woman, I’ll finally get to see the bottom of my laundry basket.

Dawn wasn’t interested in boys for a long time – in fact, she said she hated them. At least we’ve finally got one to take her off our hands.

[It doesn’t have to be about jokes either, funny stories of things the two of you used to get up to or something memorable that happened to work well.]

I remember as a toddler, the time Dawn lost her temper…

[On her husband:]

I was delighted when Dawn met James and brought him home for the first time. We had met all of her previous boyfriends and hated every one of them until James came along.

He might be a bit scruffy normally, but at least he scrubbed up well today.

I always thought Dawn would marry a prince or some form of royalty, but I suppose James will have to do…

[If you’re giving advice on a happy marriage:]

My husband and I have been happily married for 20 years but isn’t bad when you consider we’ve been married for 28 years.

If you need some advice on what to do to make your marriage long and happy, don’t ask me!”

Writing the Perfect Mother of the Groom Wedding Speech: A Step-by-Step Guide

Our mother of the groom wedding speech guide gives you tips and templates for giving a memorable mother of the groom wedding speech.

Mother of the groom giving speech

Are you the mother of the groom and tasked with giving a speech at your son's wedding? Writing a heartfelt and meaningful speech can be a daunting task, but with a little preparation and guidance, you can create the perfect speech that will leave your audience in tears of joy.

Here are some tips on how to write the perfect mother of the groom wedding speech:

  • Start by brainstorming . Before you start writing, take some time to think about your relationship with your son and what you want to say to the newlyweds on their special day. Jot down any memories, anecdotes, or words of wisdom that come to mind.
  • Keep it personal . Your speech should be about your son and your relationship with him, rather than about general wedding advice. Share personal stories and memories that highlight the unique bond you have with your son.
  • Show your love and support for the couple . While your speech should be about your son, it's also important to show your love and support for the couple. Express your happiness for them and your excitement for their future together.
  • Be heartfelt and sincere . Your speech should come from the heart and be sincere. Avoid using cliche phrases or jokes that may come across as insincere.
  • Practice, practice, practice . Rehearsing your speech is key to delivering it confidently and smoothly. Practice in front of a mirror or with a close friend or family member to get feedback and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Keep it short and sweet . While you may have a lot to say, it's important to keep your speech concise and to the point. Aim for around 5-7 minutes in length.

Here are a few points you can include in your mother of the groom wedding speech:

  • Share a personal story about the groom and how he has grown and changed over the years
  • Express your love and support for the couple
  • Offer words of wisdom and advice for the couple's future together
  • Raise a toast to the happy couple

Writing the perfect mother of the groom wedding speech takes time, preparation, and a lot of heart. By following these tips and focusing on your personal relationship with your son, you can create a speech that will be remembered and cherished for years to come.

  • Speech on My Mother

ffImage

Your Ideal Companion by Vedantu

My Mother Speech is kind of a special one as one gets to express what they truly feel for the most important person in their life without whom there would be no existence and sometimes for Speech On My Mother it can also be difficult as one is overwhelmed with emotions to express their love and gratitude. This can be given on special occasions like birthdays, or Mother’s day or on any day one wishes to celebrate their mother’s love and presence in their life. This speech can be given in varying formats like Long Speech on My Mother or Short Speech on My Mother.

Long Speech on My Mother

Good Morning all, a warm welcome to everyone who has gathered here today for the celebration of the most important and underappreciated figure in our lives, our Mothers.

Whenever one is in pain and hurt, they like to tend to the care of their mother, and whenever one wishes to celebrate a success also one first likes to thank their mother and I am no different. My mother brought me into this world with a lot of love and pain so it is natural that when we are in extremes of our emotional state we like to run to our mother for her care and concern and she always embraces us.

My mother is my biggest supporter and cheerleader, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my mother for everything she has done for me and my siblings. A mother is like nature, she is giving and forgiving, she is the most nurturing and compassionate person in the world. My mother works unrelentingly to make the lives of everyone around her better, she wakes up every morning before dawn and works till late at night, and more often these efforts go unnoticed by the people around her, and yet she doesn’t complain. She is the one who has taught me all about time management living by example. For me, she is the true definition of selflessness.

My mother is my best friend. We share everything and she is very open and blunt about what she thinks about my actions. This quality of my mother has taught me the importance of being honest with kindness and not being rude just because you think differently from others. My mother has taught me how to not give up after faltering, she has always motivated me in trying again and doing new things to discover myself. All my mistakes were also celebrated. She is a great host, whenever my friends or our relatives come home, she prepares a full treat meal and everyone’s taste is served and everyone is well-fed, even if it is late in the evening. Her welcoming nature has taught me to be open and gracious as well. Well, I would be lucky to have half the grace she exudes. She is the one who has taught me all about time management living by example. There is no one like her, she is my superhero.

When you have such a great living example at home, you don’t need to look for inspiration elsewhere. My mother uplifts everyone around her, and I am always in awe of her exuberant personality. There is a popular saying that goes because God can’t be everywhere he made mothers, isn’t that so true and wonderfully put. You are the best mother in the world. I only hope to become half the woman that you are. I love you Maa.

Short Speech on My Mother

Good Morning all, a warm welcome to everyone here today for the celebration of the most important and underappreciated figure in our lives, our Mothers. Thank you for showing up in such large numbers to celebrate our real heroes.

A mother is someone who gives birth to us, nourishes us, nurtures us, and raises us to be good human beings. She knows us even before we have set our foot into this world. She understands us better than anyone, even when we are not speaking. She takes care of us like a devoted nurturer and protects us like warriors. My mother has played so many roles in my life, she is a teacher, she taught me how to walk, talk, read and write when I fall sick she also stays up all night to look after me and be there by my side and the next morning goes about her daily routine of waking everyone up, making breakfast, cooking lunch and cleaning without showing any hesitations.

She does so much for everyone with a smile and I have learnt to stay optimistic and hopeful in any difficult situation from her strength and courage. My mother is the strongest woman I know and even though we fight and disagree sometimes she always listens to my point of view and understands my perspective without any judgment. She has taught me to be kind and respectful of everyone’s opinions and ideas. She is the best cook and the greatest mother.

Whatever good I am, all the good in me people speak of is because of you my mother. I owe everything to you. Any action I take I always think of making you proud of me. Thank you for instilling such strong values in me. It’s my honor and privilege to be born to a mother like you.

Thank you.

writing speech mother

There are seven parts to writing a mother of the bride toast that will make your daughter proud and will have your guests raving.

Here is the general outline you’ll follow to write your speech:

Introduce Yourself

Thank the Guests

Talk about your Daughter

Talk about your new Son or Daughter-in-Law

Explain Why Their Marriage Makes You Happy

Close with a Wish for the Couple

Practice Reciting the Speech

Part #1: Introduce Yourself

While many guests will already know you and your connection to the couple, you can’t assume that everyone will. It’s important to kick off your mother of the bride speech by introducing yourself.

Good evening, everyone. My name is Nancy and I’m the mother of the bride.

Welcome! For those of you who I haven’t met yet, I’m Karen—the mother of the bride.

Welcome, everyone. My name is Bethenny and I’m the happiest mother a bride has ever had.

This is a simple yet strong way to begin your toast. Everyone will learn who you are and why you are giving a speech.

Plus, if you have a fear of public speaking, starting the speech by stating a non-emotional fact is a good way to boost your confidence from the very beginning. You are less likely to feel uncertain when delivering a line as factual and simple as who you are.

Part #2: Thank the Guests

Next, thank the guests for attending the wedding.

In many cases, the parents of the bride act as the “host” of their daughter’s wedding. That means it’s also your responsibility to thank everyone for coming to the event you organized.

Thank you for being here to celebrate the happy couple and this joyous occasion.

Thank you for traveling from near and far to witness my oldest daughter and my new son-in-law becoming husband and wife.

Thank you for taking the time to join us here in Hawaii to celebrate Diane and Jake getting married.

On behalf of my husband, Paul, and myself — we’d both like to thank you for joining us as we celebrate the beautiful bride and groom.

As shown in the first example, you can keep this section simple and straight to the point.

However, if this is a destination wedding, it’s nice to touch on the extra effort that the guests had to put in to make it to the wedding. You can do this by mentioning how far they traveled or by noting the location of the wedding.

Also, if there’s another parent figure in your daughter's life, you can choose to include them in this section as someone who also wants to thank guests.

Part #3: Talk About Your Daughter

Now we’re getting into more of the core of the mother of the bride speech.

After the initial pleasantries like the introduction and thanking the guests have been completed, it’s time to talk about your daughter.

This is going to be one of the most challenging and daunting concepts when it comes to writing your speech.

To minimize your overwhelm and help you to get started, try this brainstorming exercise. I like to call it my “pen to paper” exercise.

Write for 15 to 30 minutes without ever lifting your pen off of the paper.

The idea is this: you write by way of a stream of consciousness. You don’t judge your notes. You don’t self-critique or edit along the way. You just keep writing.

Once you’re done with the exercise, review your notes. Highlight or underline ideas that you’d like to consider for your mother of the bride speech.

You’ll be able to use several ideas that you jotted down. To get a better idea of how this will work, let’s look at an example.

Brainstorm Note:

Kim is so determined.

Expand on this Brainstorm Note:

When Kim was eight years old, she desperately wanted a Power Wheels Barbie Jeep. She wrote Santa Claus for three years straight pleading for that Jeep. Christmas morning came and our living room floor was covered in the shredded red and green paper but there was no Jeep in sight. I was so worried Kim was going to sulk all morning, sad that Santa had not answered her letter. Instead, she ran to the hall closet to put on her jacket and shoes.

I asked her where she was going and she said to me, “Well, if our neighbor’s living rooms look like ours, they are going to need a cleaning service to help clean it up!”

She marketed herself as an elf and asked for donations as she cleaned up around the Christmas trees of our neighbors. That and a few lemonade stands later, Kim bought the Jeep herself and was cruising down our driveway the following summer.

Tie this Story to Marriage:

Kim is the most determined woman I know. When someone else—not even Santa Clause—didn’t make her dream come true, she worked hard and used her determination to make her dream a reality on her own. That’s why I know her marriage will be a successful one...because she’s determined to make it that way. Come any challenge or bump in the road, she will face it head-on with determination and with Jake by her side.

Can you see from the example how the brainstorming exercise will help you? Take a simple thought, turn it into a bigger and very specific story, and then communicate how that anecdote can apply to their marriage.

Part #4: Talk about Your New Son or Daughter-in-Law

Even though you are the mother of the bride, it’s important to also talk about your new son or daughter-in-law. This is your opportunity to welcome this person into your family and show guests how you feel about him or her.

Let’s look at an example to see how you might talk about your daughter’s new spouse.

Character Trait:

Your daughter’s partner is considerate.

Story to Show Trait:

When I first met Josh, he invited my husband and me to dinner at this adorable Italian restaurant on the water. He had talked to our daughter before the dinner and learned how much we love chocolate gelato and he picked out this restaurant because they were known for their gelato.

Expand this Trait to a Bigger Idea:

That seemingly simple gesture showed me what a very thoughtful and considerate man Josh is. I feel confident in my daughter’s decision to spend her life with Josh because I know she’ll be with a man who puts her needs and desires first.

Do you see how you take one character trait and expand on that by telling a specific story and then connecting that story to the larger concept of marriage? This is the formula you can use to talk about your daughter’s partner within your mother of the bride speech.

Part #5: Explain Why Their Marriage Makes You Happy

Now that you’ve highlighted stories about your daughter and her partner, it’s time to communicate why their entry into marriage makes you happy.

For this section, you want to focus on feelings that you see in the couple and why that brings you joy.

As a mother, all I’ve ever wanted for Michelle is to see her happy. I’ve never seen my daughter more full of joy than when she’s with Manny.

Marriage is about support, understanding, and love. This is why I know Jenny and Luis will have a wonderful and lasting marriage and why I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Luis into our family.

writing speech mother

Part #6: Close with a Wish for the Couple

Every successful mother of the bride speech needs a strong closing. The best way to accomplish this in your toast is to close with a wish for the couple.

Here are some examples:

Everyone please raise your glass. Cheers to my new son and to my daughter — the most beautiful bride.

I wish you both a lifetime of happiness, laughter, and a love that only continues to grow with each wonderful year you two share together.

May your marriage be full of dreams realized, support for each other, and never ending love.

Part #7: Practice Reciting the Speech

Now that you’re toast is written, it’s time to practice reciting your mother of the bride speech .

Writing is only half the challenge. The other challenging part is feeling comfortable and confident when the microphone is in your hands.

To prepare for that moment, I recommend rehearsing your speech three to five times before the big day.

This will allow you to feel out the rhythm of how you want to deliver the speech. Then, you’ll be poised and ready to recite the perfect mother of the bride toast.

Love my vows Katelyn!!!! It’s such a relief to have this out of the way so I can focus on all the rest of the stuff I need to do!  You were my very favorite part of the process!! Your experience and confidence in the process took all the stress out of writing my vows!

— Natalie, Florida

I thought the process was outstanding. You did a great job communicating, and I thought the turnaround time for editing was perfect. I also thought the video interview was great in that it was personal and meaningful!

I am a storyteller, not a speechwriter. I was incredibly intimidated about writing one.

So thankful to find Katelyn to get my thoughts all in order. Very proud of how the speech came out. Looking forward to giving it!

— Jennifer Whitley, Texas

I had such a wonderful experience working with Katelyn. She truly helped mold perfect vows that I can’t wait to tell my fiancé on our wedding day!  Katelyn was friendly, sweet, and super easy to work with. I will definitely be calling her up if I have to give another speech in the near future.

— Jordanne, California

Katelyn was professional, easy to talk to, and made the interviewing process fun. She came well prepared with unexpected and thought-provoking questions to get a better understanding of our love story and who we are as a couple.

She was a pleasure to work with and made the vow writing process enjoyable.

— Kimi Kinsey, South Carolina

Working with Katelyn on my maid of honor toast was an incredible experience. She really took the time to understand my relationship with my best friend and used my responses to craft a toast that put my thoughts and feelings into words in a way that I never would have been able to do on my own.

Before working with Katelyn, I was nervous and stressed about giving (and writing) such a big, important speech. But now I’m so relieved that it’s done, and I honestly can’t wait to stand up and tell everyone exactly what my best friend means to me.

— Allyssa, New Jersey

I didn’t actually know this service existed until I discovered Katelyn! It was such a fun experience to video chat with her about my best friend who is getting married this summer.

I don’t have to stress about writing this a few weeks before my best friend’s wedding. Thank you so much and I can’t wait to read it at my best friend’s wedding!

Mother of the Bride Speech Advice

Mother of the bride speech advice advice.

Mother of the bride speeches are becoming more common. Sometimes mums are asked to say a few words because the bride’s father has passed away. Sometimes they’re asked because the bride thinks her mum’s rather wonderful. And sometimes a mum asks to give a speech because she has plenty to say!

Whatever the reason, take comfort in the fact that all the mothers we work with, enjoy giving their speech on the day. As TV scriptwriters by trade, the Speechy team know to create memorable moments, so f ollow our mum-of-the-bride advice and write a speech you (and your daughter) will be proud of.

Mother of the Bride Speech Etiquette

Relax, you only have two jobs to do; make everyone feel welcome and make your daughter feel loved.

1 - Don't go overly formal

Forget about the traditional speech etiquette, as long as you’re polite and loving, no one cares if you address them as ‘ladies and gentlemen’ (in fact it seems overly formal if you do).

Keep your language conversational and don’t resort to ‘wedding-waffle’. No need to mention the gorgeous venue. Remember, everyone has eyes.

wedding speech mother of the bride

2 - Who should the mother of the bride thank?

The biggest trap mothers fall into is thinking they need to thank people. Actually, that’s the newlywed’s job. That said, it pays to mention your daughter’s new-in laws and welcome them to your family.

Do NOT get sucked into thanking your friends or family members who’ve travelled far. It’s not your day and, quite frankly, too many thank yous becomes boring.

wedding speeches mother of groom speech writer

3 - Should the mother of the bride pay tribute to the father of the bride?

It obviously depends on the circumstances.

If you’re still married or happily separated, you can refer to ‘us’ and ‘we’ throughout the speech. You might also want to include an anecdote which illustrates their father-daughter bond in action, if he’s not giving a speech himself.

Clearly, there’s no  need to mention an estranged father.

Of course, if you’re speaking on behalf of a father who’s passed away, then you’ll want to pay tribute to him. Be careful though; you don’t want to turn your speech into a eulogy.

Read our advice on how to write a heartfelt tribute to the dearly departed while ensuring your speech remains a joyful one.

mother of the bride speech

4 - Should the mother of the bride mention absent friends or the dearly departed?

There’s really no point mentioning those who couldn’t attend the special day unless you have a special message from a much loved grandparent.

When it comes to paying tribute to loved ones who have passed away – maybe your daughter’s grandparents, for example – try to pay tribute to them with a smile and with more than a platitude.  Sure, they may have been proud of the woman your daughter has become but would they also have been the first on the dancefloor, insisting the band play some ABBA and Lionel Richie?

There’s no need to stop and ask everyone to join you in an official ‘toast to the dearly departed’ unless a close family member has recently died and the emotion is still raw. Remember, the newlyweds may be proposing a similar toast themselves, so check with them in advance.

wedding speeches uncle of bride hire a writer

5 - Who should the mother of the bride toast?

A mother should conclude her speech by asking the guests to join her in a toast to the happy couple.

For example… Classic toasts  include…

  • “Let us raise our glasses to the happy couple. May you grow old on one pillow.”

There’s plenty of funny toasts  to consider too…

  • “Now let’s toast to the two secrets to a happy marriage. Humour and short-term memory.”

But we love really it when a mother’s toast is really personal and could only ever be directed at the couple in question.

Examples of strong mother of the bride toasts…

  • “As I stand here, proud and slightly emotional, I can’t help but wonder how my little girl grew up so fast. To the bride and groom, may your marriage be as sweet as the time you convinced me to let you have ice cream for breakfast. Cheers to the newlyweds!”
  • “To my daughter and her dashing husband, may your marriage be as strong as my insistence on family game night and as enduring as my collection of ‘mom jokes.’ Here’s to a lifetime of joy, love, and a few eye rolls along the way. Cheers!”
  • “As the mother of the bride, I have the pleasure of officially welcoming a new member into the family. To the happy couple, may your love be as constant as my reminders to wear a jacket, and your laughter as contagious as my attempts at dancing. Cheers!”

“To the bride and groom, thank you for making me the mother-in-law. A title that comes with responsibilities, like pretending not to notice when you use the good china for everyday meals. May your marriage be as smooth as my secret pancake recipe and as delightful as our family gatherings. Cheers!”

SpeechyAI  is great at crafting truly unique toasts for mums to deliver on the special day!

6 - Questions for mothers of the bride to ask the newlyweds...

  • INTRO  – Will you be be introduced by an MC or will you need to introduce yourself?
  • THE SPEAKER SCHEDULE  – When will you be speaking (stagger your alcohol intake accordingly).
  • SUGGESTED DURATION –  How long do the couple want you to speak? (Negotiate between six and eight minutes ideally)
  • EQUIPMENT – Will there be a mic? Will you have time to test it on the morning? If so, it’s  worth understanding how to hold the mic on the day .

Mother of the Bride Speech Structure

The structure of a mother of the bride speech is similar to a father of the bride speech. If you’re both giving speeches, it’s worth discussing in advance to ensure you’re not doubling up on anecdotes or toasts.

Here’s the idea…

  • Welcome all the guests and get them laughing straight away
  • Tell some funny anecdotes from your daughter’s childhood (ideally illustrating qualities that everyone will recognise in her today)
  • Pay tribute to the woman she is today . The good stuff, the lovely stuff, but most importantly, the funny stuff.
  • Recount meeting your daughter’s partner for the first time and how you’ve grown to love them and their family (it helps if there’s an element of truth in there although it’s not compulsory)
  • You may want to offer some funny or heart-warming advice to the married couple . Nothing too profound or pompous.
  • Conclude your speech with a toast to the married couple –  traditionally it was to their ‘health and happiness’ but instead, create something more meaningful to the couple

How to Write & Deliver Your Mother of the Bride Speech

If it’s a large wedding,  start by introducing yourself and try to get a laugh in early.

  • “Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention, I’d like to start by admitting that planning this wedding felt a bit like preparing for a moon landing. There were a few hiccups, some unexpected turbulence, but here we are, ready for liftoff!”
  • “Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention, I’d like to begin by saying that raising [daughter’s name] was a bit like being in a circus. It involved a lot of juggling, occasional tightrope walking, and quite a few lion-taming moments!”
  • “Hello, beautiful people! Today, I stand before you not just as the mother of the bride but as the woman who managed to plan this wedding without turning into a ‘Mombie’ (mom zombie). Success!”

Create a narrative, so your speech doesn’t just sound like a collection of random anecdotes and ‘to dos’.

Your speech needs to hook people in from the beginning, establish a theme and carry that through to an almighty climax.

One of the mothers we worked with used the wedding venue as the inspiration for his theme. As her daughter was getting married in a theatre, she recounted her ‘best dramatic performances’, from the toddler tantrums to becoming a bridezilla. She then gave the happy couple a standing ovation.

Remember, as a Mother of the Bride , you have the best stories to tell!

If you’re finding your speech theme elusive, get in touch with the Speechy team. Our Bespoke Service may be for you.

This is the heart of the speech but where do you start? How about with a glass of wine and a brainstorm with some other family members? If your daughter has siblings, they’re likely to be a good source of content!

Get out the old photos and ask yourself lots of questions. How did she make you laugh when she was a child? Who was her first teenage crush (always good to compare with her new spouse)? Rather than resorting to clichés about her being a ‘wonderful, funny child’, find the insights and anecdotes that paint a picture.

Of course, as well as the childhood years, talk about the woman your daughter has become. Again, rather than rely on platitudes, think about what makes your daughter unique. Cherish your daughter for exactly who she is – even if she is slightly crazy and still addicted to Haribos.

wedding speeches South Asian Maid of Honour speech

Yes, it’s definitely worth mentioning the person you’ve daughter’s chosen to marry in your speech!  And try to make this more than a few cursory sentences at the end. Think about why they’re suited to your daughter. What quirks of hers are they good at tolerating? What guilty pleasures do they share?

Think about how you two have bonded. What do you like ab out your daughter’s partner? Again try to make this tribute jam-packed with unique, honest insights.

wedding speeches mother of groom help

Your closing paragraph should summarise the point of your speech.

It’s basic journalism; the speech should start by explaining what you’re going to tell people, you then tell the story, and conclude by telling everyone what you’ve told them.

A professional comedy technique is to include a ‘call-back’ in that summary. That’s where you plant a story or a piece of info at the start of the speech, possibly as a throwaway line, and then reference it later on.

An example might be, a mother who starts her speech with a story about her daughter as a toddler and the time she caused a scene when she wasn’t allowed a second ice-cream.

1,000 words later, she wishes the couple a happy life together but reminds her new son/daughter-in-law to ‘always buy her that second ice cream’.

A ‘call back’ is simple, but incredibly effective. It always makes you look cleverer than you actually are!

mother of the bride toast wedding speech

You’re aiming for between six and nine minutes for a mother of the bride speech (allowing for laughter and ad-libs).

Some couples ask for a three minute speech (or, rather their wedding planner does!) and we find that unnecessarily restrictive. This is, after all, a once in a lifetime opportunity to pay tribute to your child!

That said, no one ever witnessed a wedding speech and said ‘if only it were longer’. Even if you feel you have a wealth of good material – be strict with yourself.

The ideal length is between 1,000 and 1,200 generally.

Anything over 1,300 words is too long. If you find yourself with more – pick out content that you can drop from the speech to put into a letter for your daughter to read in private, maybe on the morning of the wedding.  It provides an extra level of intimacy and connection on the day, and can obviously be kept as a keepsake too.

wedding speeches bride love letter help

A confident delivery is half the battle. Make sure your daughter has checked the acoustics of the venue and organised a mic if necessary (so many speeches are ruined simply because people can’t hear them).

Talk at a conversational speed and make sure you try to maintain eye contact with the guests and the couple themselves.

Even if you memorise your speech, as always advise speakers having notes on the day and we’ve written a blog about how to present your notes on the day.

The golden rule is no reading from your phone!

  • If you’re being filmed  – see the camera as an extra friend. It works really well when you come to watch it back.

When we work with clients in our  Delivery Coaching Sessions , one of the things we often need to remind people is to… smile. It seems obvious but, even on such a happy day, people can often forget to look like they’re enjoying themselves and it is SO important.

A smile is literally infectious, so make the most of it. Even a fake smile tricks your body into relaxing so make the most of it.

Speech Don'ts

Don't bother with the baby clichés.

Really? You want to waste time telling us how little she slept as a newborn?

Don't refer to any exes

Even if you know your daughter would be cool with it, her parter might not be.

Don't drink before you deliver

You might hope that a glass or two of Champagne could calm your nerves but studies have shown even one glass of alcohol will reduce a speaker’s public speaking rating. Sorry about that!

Don't talk over laughter

You’ve worked hard for those laughs – don’t rush them. Always wait until your guests have settled down before continuing with your speech.

How to Make Your Mother of the Bride Speech Funny

Yes, the expectation may be on the best man, but all wedding speeches should make people laugh.

As soon as you make your audience laugh, they will feel in safe hands. And you will relax too.

1 - Avoid 'dad jokes'

Or rather, ‘mum jokes’.

Being funny isn’t about finding good jokes on the internet (if only it were that easy) but rather making witty observations about your daughter and her relationships with her nearest and dearests.

Comedians have a skilled eyes when it comes to noticing the strange things in life that we take for granted but it’s just about taking the time to look.

Everyone in the world is weird in their own unique way, so take a moment to look at your daughter through a new lens. Notice her little quirks, unusual habits and guilty pleasures.

Is she incapable of passing a dog without speaking to it in her baby voice? Is she incapable of sitting still if she knows there’s an opened box of chocolates hiding somewhere in her house? Does she wear slippers even in bed?

Remember the adage ‘it’s funny because it’s true’. Read our How To Be Funny Blog for more advice.

2 - Create a character

Imagine your daughter in a sit-com -what sort of character would she play? The high-powered businesswoman who can’t work the remote control? The fitness fanatic who does squats whilst she eats cake? Have fun with her character.

If you have a good relationship with her partner, you can affectionately tease them too – but only if it’s genuinely delivered with love.

wedding toast groom rhyme hire a writer

3 - Find your favourite stories

Don’t resort to a series of adjectives. ‘Funny’, ‘sweet’, ‘thoughtful’ are just wedding speech white noise unless you show those qualities in action. Prove , don’t tell.

People are programmed to respond to stories , not words – so spend time reminiscing and hunting down those anecdotes.

Recruit other family members, look at old photo albums – and remind yourself of the wealth of material at your disposal.

4 - Get inspired

Your mother is a special person, isn’t she? She’s the one who loves you the most, cares for you, and always stands by your side.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate her. We’ll talk about my mother, her personality, her love, and her sacrifices.

1-minute Speech on My Mother

Good morning everyone, I am here to speak about the most important person in my life – my mother. No words are enough to describe the depth of her love and sacrifices. She is my first teacher, my first friend, and my strongest supporter.

My mother is also my teacher. Not only has she taught me how to walk and talk, but she has also instilled good values in me. Whenever I was wrong, she corrected me, and whenever I was lost, she guided me. She has taught me to differentiate between right and wrong, to respect elders, to help those in need, and to always hold my head high.

She is also my biggest cheerleader. She is always there to celebrate my smallest victories and console me in my failures. Her faith in me boosts my confidence, motivates me to work harder, and never give up. She is the one who never fails to make me smile, no matter how low I feel.

In conclusion, my mother is a blessing in my life. She is my role model, my inspiration, and my strength. I am fortunate to have her in my life and I am what I am today because of her. She is not just a mother to me, she is my superhero. Thank you, mom, for everything you do. You are the best mother anyone can ask for.

3 Funny Mother of the Groom Speech Examples (+Guide)

  • by Marisa Jenkins

Being a parent is an excitingly unpredictable adventure. Reaching the point where your kids start getting married is, to say the least, overwhelming. As a mother of the groom, you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add a dash of humor, a pinch of nostalgia, and a whole lot of love to your son’s big day.

The key to a successful and beautiful speech at a wedding is finding the balance between heartfelt sentiment and lighthearted fun. Below are three examples of funny mother-of-the-groom speeches, followed by a guide and some tips for how to write one.

Unforgettably Funny Mother of the Groom Speeches: Examples

First of all, from the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank the bar staff for dutifully keeping my glass of Champagne at just the right level of fullness so I could get through this speech without any trouble.

Now, for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Karen, the proudest and loudest mom from this side of Michigan. I’m the one who raised this charming, sweet, and intelligent young man we’re all celebrating tonight. Now, was he always this way? I’ll let his dad do the talking on that.

I remember the day I gave birth to Robert—who we still called Bobby at the time—I looked into his eyes and thought, “Wow, you have your father’s eyes… and lips… and nose… what the hell were my genes doing?!”

But all kidding aside, raising our little Bobby was nothing but a joy. All your misbehavior and “adventures” at the time might have been stressful, but at least I’ve got all these stories to tell now.

I’ve watched Bobby grow from a frog-chasing, mud-pie-making, video-game-playing lanky boy into this fine man standing before us. And I could not be any prouder.

When Robert was little, he said his dream was to marry a princess from a faraway land. I’ll let y’all decide whether Minnesota is far enough, but Christine, you’re as close as it gets to royalty in his eyes. And I must say, I agree.

Christine, you are such a wonderful, caring, and kind young woman. All of Robert’s nieces and nephews love you—probably more than they love Robert, honestly! But who wouldn’t? Thank you for choosing my son. If he ever starts fumbling, let me know, okay? We will straighten everything out quickly.

Anyway, with that said, welcome to our tiny family! We’re loud, we’re nosy, and we’re all here because we love you two so much.

To end my speech, I’d like to offer some sage advice. Robert, for the love of God, please remember to put the toilet seat down. And Christine, well, just remember that Robert’s doing his best. You two stay kind and patient to each other now more than ever, you hear?

Everyone, let’s raise our glasses to love, laughter, and a happy ever after as wonderful as they both are. Cheers!

2. Hi, everyone.

For those of you who have no idea who I am, I’m Maria, the mother of the man over there who looks like he’s dreading what I might say in this little speech of mine.

Firstly, let’s give a round of applause to the newlyweds for looking so fabulous today! I mean, with the trademark Fuentes family genes, would you expect anything else?

Now, let’s talk about my son. The man of the hour. As a kid, he had two big ambitions: to become an astronaut and to avoid eating vegetables for the rest of his life. You may not have gone to the moon, and we may have force-fed you broccoli, but some doors close so others can open.

As a teenager, Juan would always say, “I’ll never get married. I’ll be a cool bachelor forever and spoil all my nieces and nephews.” Fast forward to today… we all know how that went! But honestly, who can blame Juan?

My daughter-in-law, Sasha, is such a catch. What a gorgeous, brilliant, and intelligent woman! She’s learning all my recipes one by one and outdoing me! Soon she’ll take over the world, and no one can stop her. Not even Juan.

But in all seriousness, Sasha, I’ve never seen my son as happy as he is whenever he’s with you. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

I have just one piece of advice about my son: he’s allergic to housework. It makes him break out in excuses. If I were you, I’d keep an “EpiPen” handy.

Just kidding. Jokes aside, love is not about how many days, months, or years you have been together. It’s about how much you love each other every day. And if all else fails, remember, a good sense of humor and a bottle of wine can solve just about anything.

So, let’s raise our glasses to Mr. and Mrs. Fuentes! May your life together be full of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Cheers to the newlyweds!

3. Ladies and gentlemen,

I’m Carol, Tom’s mom. I’ve known him for a long time—well, since birth, actually. In many ways, he hasn’t changed at all: he’s still a bit of a picky eater, still loves superhero movies, and still needs a gentle nudge to do housework.

When Tom was little, he had three goals in life: to eat candy for every meal, to become a dinosaur, and to stay up past 10 PM. I’m proud to say that he’s achieved at least one of those. I’ll let you all guess which one.

I remember when he started dating—a parent’s worst nightmare, I know. He came to me for advice. I told him, “Be yourself, be respectful, be safe, and whatever you do, do NOT show her your collection of weird socks on the first date.” Jenny, I apologize if he didn’t follow that last piece of advice.

All jokes aside, the day Tom introduced Jenny to all of us, he was lit up with a brightness that we’d never seen before. That’s when we all knew that she was the one.

Tom and Jenny, I’m sure you’ve already heard all the clichéd things about married life being hard. Being a rollercoaster. All that jazz. So I’ll just say this: marriage is like a fine wine, it gets better with age. And this fine bottle of wine can only get better with age if you both handle it with care and don’t drop it.

So, let’s raise our glasses to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson-Whitaker, a match made in heaven! Thanks for being a reminder that love, laughter, and a good sense of humor can make any marriage a joyous adventure. Here’s to a lifetime of happiness and love. Cheers!

Writing a Funny Mother of the Groom Speeches: Tips and Tricks

journal

Spend Time for Reflection

The key to writing a funny speech as a mother of the groom is having a lot of anecdotes, characteristics, and memories related to your son. Gather all of these points by spending a lot of time reflecting.

Reminisce on childhood stories, teenage phases, and other significant milestones. Focus on humorous and endearing memories or any tale that shows his personality traits.

Structure Your Speech

Preparing an outline can help you organize your thoughts, making the speech easier to write. Here is an outline you can follow:

  • Greeting for the guests
  • ( Optional ) Thank everyone for attending and all the vendors
  • ( Optional ) Opening joke or icebreaker
  • Reflect on the groom’s childhood
  • Talk about the groom’s growth and development
  • Talk about the bride
  • Talk about their relationship
  • Share marriage advice
  • Send your well-wishes
  • Conclude with a toast

Understand Your Audience

Remember that your audience will be diverse. When incorporating humor, make sure it is appropriate for all ages and understandable by everyone —this means no inside jokes that only you and your children will get.

In the same vein, respect your son’s and daughter-in-law’s boundaries. Do not share any stories that could embarrass them.

Start Writing

Starting a speech—or any writing project for that matter—can be intimidating. However, just put all your thoughts down into words. Do not worry about perfection or conciseness at this point in the process.

Inject Humor in Many Ways

Since you want to write a funny speech as the mother of the groom, you have to sprinkle your speech with appropriate humor. Although jokes will be a large part of this, there are other ways to make your speech even funnier:

  • Playful teasing
  • Light sarcasm
  • Witty remarks on marriage
  • Old sayings
  • Quotes from pop culture

Getting your timing right when delivering jokes is also crucial. Know how to read your audience in real-time—see if they will be receptive to jokes. Likewise, pausing at the right moment, such as before or after a punchline, can add more impact to your speech.

Edit, Edit, Edit

woman using her laptop

Once you have written all that you want to write, it is time to start revising. Watch out for any grammatical errors, long sentences, and awkward phrases. This is your opportunity to rewrite parts that sound unnatural or unfunny.

This process might take several do-overs. Be patient and kind to yourself as you go through multiple revisions.

Practice Your Speech

Read your speech out loud. This is important not only for the delivery but also for spotting any errors during your revision.

In terms of delivery, reading your speech out loud multiple times will get you used to delivering it. For instance, you can work on your intonation and find spots where you should pause.

Seek Feedback From Others

Ask people you trust—such as your partner or other children—to listen to your speech. Doing so has multiple benefits:

  • They can give you the confidence to deliver the speech to an audience.
  • They can spot any errors or awkward spots you may have missed.
  • They can provide constructive feedback and criticism.

You can edit and revise your speech according to the feedback you receive. As mentioned above, revisions will take multiple times—asking others for help will make the process easier.

Stay True to Yourself

Although you want to write a funny mother of the groom speech, not everyone is a natural comedian. If you feel awkward delivering jokes and being sarcastic, take a step back and focus more on sentimentality—if that is what you are comfortable with. You can sprinkle some humor into your speech afterward.

Final Thoughts

When faced with the responsibility of giving a speech, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. You might even want to back out.

However, at the end of the day, you do not have to be anything other than your son’s parent. As the last tip says, be authentic. Use these funny mother of the groom speech examples to guide you, but personalize the details and the stories to make it true to yourself and your relationship with your son.

Eulogy for my mother - an example

A heartfelt eulogy for a mother from her daughter

Contributed by: Connie Smith | Orting, Washington, USA

This sincerely heartfelt eulogy for a mother was contributed by its writer to help and inspire you if need to write one for your own mother.

If that's so, given the circumstances, we understand how very difficult it can be to get started and we're sorry for your loss.

Reading what Connie has said about her mother will give you ideas you can easily adapt and use in the eulogy you need to write about yours. Like her, you too could:

  • share a few of your favorite memories,
  • speak about her special qualities and what she loved,
  • talk about the positive impact she made on your life and how much she meant to you.

Here's Connie's eulogy for her mother.

As you read it through, imagine you're hearing it out loud.  That will help you get a better sense of the flow it.

A tribute to my beautiful mother, Jean

For those of you who may not know me, I am Connie, the lucky person who had Jean as her mother. Thank you for coming today to celebrate her life.

On September 1st, I lost my mother and my best friend. I will miss her presence and her eager smile, for the rest of my life.

I think we all remember her as being a kind and loving person who was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the out. The most important thing in life to her was, number one, her family, and, number two, her friends.

What made my mother special

Today I am going to talk about some of the things that made her so special.

Quote from eulogy for my mother about working at the telephone company

As you know, Mom worked for the telephone company for 33 years. For most of those years, she worked the hours of 5PM to 11PM, because it was important to her to get my brother Terry and I off to school in the mornings, and to be there to greet us when we returned in the afternoons.

I know, especially in that day and age, “working mothers” were sometimes criticized for not staying home with their families, but I never felt I suffered for not having her home with us in the evenings.

In fact, she was way beyond her time, as many of you here were. She was able to “have it all.” For me, she set an excellent example that you can successfully balance family, friendships, and a career.

Mom never left for work without dinner in the oven so when Dad got home a hot meal would be waiting. Granted, sometimes by the time he actually arrived, the food was a little dry and hard to identify, but nevertheless, dinner was on the table and a balanced meal was served!

When Mom was in her twenties and Terry was a toddler, she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and spent some time at the Rinehart Arthritis Clinic in Wheeler Oregon.

While Mom was having tests done and learning how to live with this debilitating disease, Dad was back at the motel with Terry being Mr. Mom.

After several days Mom was finally released and as they were leaving town, they drove by a Dairy Queen. Terry started to point at it and fuss, so Dad finally had to confess that that’s where they had been eating everyday. Mom asked, “What did you eat?” and Dad sheepishly replied: “Ice cream. It’s the only thing Terry would eat.” So much for the balanced meals! Mom loved to cook! Throughout our childhood, we would share the kitchen with vats of soaking cucumbers because Mom was making pickles, canning jars, and even experiments making homemade soap!

But her greatest joy was to make a big dinner for special occasions. Even with the one side dish that was inevitably forgotten and did not make it to the table, there was always enough food for an army, and we’d have leftovers for a week.

Our parent's support - what it means to us

Even though sometimes I think Mom would have preferred for Terry and me never to “leave the nest”, Mom and Dad really tried to encourage us to be independent.

When Terry went to Basic Training for the military, Mom cried for days. After about a month in boot camp, he became very ill with the flu and Mom was desperate. She called the doctor to see if there was anything he could do, and the sympathetic doctor told her that she “needed to untie the apron strings.”

Mom would have called the governor if she thought it would bring Terry home; she was devastated that she could no longer protect him.

More than anything, Mom wanted me to go to college. I know she would have liked me to attend school locally, but when I chose to attend in Corvallis, she supported that decision.

I have often told people, that without my mother’s constant telephone calls and encouragement, I would have never made it through the four years. I will always be grateful to both of my parents, because with their support, that education opened up a multitude of doors for me.

I believe my Mom and Dad would do anything for their family. Over the years, I’ve had several surgeries and each time, they would travel up to Washington to be by my side. When my husband Rick had back surgery, they were right there to help and support. They loved my brother and I and our spouses, unconditionally. Our successes were celebrated, and our failures mourned.

Pictures and reminiscing

When I was looking through Mom and Dad’s pictures for the DVD that we are going to show you later on, I realized how well-chronicled Mom’s life was in pictures; her childhood growing up, her parents, siblings, and friends. All the vacations we took, and all the trips Mom and Dad took after my brother, and I left home.

Looking at them, I couldn’t help but reminisce.

I remembered Mom telling me about her life as a child: her first doll, how she lost her hearing in her right ear, how she got the deep scar on her knee, the beaded moccasins a Flathead Indian made her in exchange for a jar of fresh cream, their dog King, and her brother Raymond who was her “best pal”.

I remembered the times when my brother and I were real young and dad was working, she’d make some popcorn, bundle us up with a pillow and blanket, and off we’d go to the drive-in theater to watch Elvis Presley movies.

I remembered all the wonderful Christmases. Not only was there a huge pile of presents under the tree, but the tree was also always loaded with every ornament Mom ever owned.

Usually, a Christmas didn’t pass without us having to pick up the tree after it fell over from all the weight under it, and on it. Personally, I think it was the tree's way of begging for mercy!

As I was looking through the pictures, I remembered all the vacations and camping trips we took as children. Mom and Dad both worked hard but believed in the value of spending time as a family.

A collage of images triggering memories of my mother: beaded moccasins, a camp site, an Elvis poster, and a decorated Christmas tree

I remembered the unwavering devotion and love my Mom and Dad had for each other. In fact, six days after Mom passed away, they would have been married for 58 years. Dad, Rick, and I still celebrated the event with Mom being there in spirit!

As I was looking through the pictures, I remembered how much Mom loved working at the telephone company, being a Telephone Company Pioneer , and working with people who became her lifelong friends.

I remembered that every night without fail, Mom pin curled her hair with bobby pins and clippies. Thank goodness she was never hit by lightning!

Over the last year, Mom’s caregiver Lorna took her once a week to get her hair done.

One day the young hair dresser said, I’ll spray her hair really good today so that it lasts longer.” Lorna replied, “You don’t need to bother. She puts her hair up in clippies every night, anyhow.” The young girl looked at Lorna with this “Huh???” look.

We don’t think she’d ever heard of clippies*, and most likely, had never heard of anyone pin curling their hair every night.

(*Click to see clippies in action )

Recent years and 'I believe'

In recent years, Alzheimer's set in and Mom was unable to speak due to paralysis of her throat and tongue, but her smile and love for life never faded.

Mom was kind, fun loving, and set an excellent example of being upbeat and positive. Even as her memory and health were failing, she still loved to be around people, laugh, and enjoy a nice glass of wine. She always said how she had “had a good life!” And, she never stopped living life to the fullest.

As Mom took her last breath with Leslie and I by her side, she shed a single tear that rolled down to the tip of her nose.

I thought about that a long time. But if I know my Mom, she was sad to leave us behind but thrilled to see the host of family and friends waiting to greet her. And most of all, where she is now, she once again is able to speak, and her memory is sharp.

There is a favorite song of mine that you’ll hear when you see the DVD showing pictures of Mom’s life. It’s called “I Believe”. The premise of the song is that the person who passes on, never really leaves you, they are just not here in physical form. The song says, “I believe there are more than angels watching over me.” And I know Mom is up there now with the angels watching over all of her loved ones.

Autumnal trees (background) with quote from my mother's eulogy - Mom's favorite time of year was the fall.

Mom’s favorite time of year was the Fall. So, I guess it’s only fitting, that she would choose this time of year to leave us. Yes, she’s watching over us, but she’s also enjoying a beautiful view of the turning leaves.

Like I said earlier, I will miss Mom for the rest of my life, but she’s left me with a beautiful gift: her positive attitude, her passion for life, and her unconditional love.

Again, thank you all for coming to help us celebrate this beautiful lady’s life.

A Government Veto on Speech at the Supreme Court

Murthy v. missouri challenges government efforts to suppress dissenting viewpoints on social media..

Thomas W. Hazlett | 6.26.2024 9:55 AM

UPDATE: The Court has issued a 6–3 decision in Murthy v. Missouri , holding that the plaintiffs lack standing.

A case pending at the U.S. Supreme Court stems from the efforts a multitude of federal agencies made to remove certain viewpoints from public view. In other words, they sought to abridge freedom of speech —you know, that thing that the First Amendment explicitly bans.

The case, Murthy v. Missouri (formerly Missouri v. Biden ), may support or overturn the 5th Circuit's ruling that the government violated the First Amendment to reduce the circulation of viewpoints that various agencies believed noxious. This included, the court noted in its decision, controversies surrounding the "COVID-19 lab-leak theory, pandemic lockdowns, vaccine side-effects, election fraud, and the Hunter Biden laptop story."

In many cases, the speech that offended the government has proven demonstrably true—the high social cost of school closings, for example, or the provenance of Hunter Biden's laptop. But the central problem is that the government sought, and often succeeded, in blocking free expression. Rather than engage in free and open debate, the government sought to squash it.

Speakers who were targeted for silencing—such as Jay Bhattacharya , a Stanford professor of medicine and economics—sued the government. The primary evidence came from caches of correspondence revealing government administrators cajoling, berating, swearing at, and arguably threatening (with policy sanctions) executives at Twitter, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Spotify.

A Louisiana judge issued extensive injunctions that barred a variety of officials and agencies from "meeting with social-media companies for the purpose of…pressuring or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression or reduction of content containing protected free speech." This was largely upheld on appeal, and the Supreme Court accepted a review, with a hearing held this past March.

During oral arguments, the government suggested that these officials merely "sought to mitigate the hazards of online misinformation" by "calling attention to content" that violated the "platforms' policies." A pro-government amicus brief by the Brennan Center argued that "communications by government officials—even emphatic ones—are an exercise of the government's prerogative to voice its own views and are consistent with the First Amendment as long as the ultimate decision regards content rests with the platforms themselves."

Yet the principal deputy solicitor general, representing the federal government, readily conceded that officials do not enjoy First Amendment protection for such speech, only the ability to inform the public as part of their job-related duties. The constitutional protection of free speech lies with the speakers (who in this case were targeted and suppressed) and the public (who would benefit from having unfettered access to differing viewpoints).

Regrettably, the justices seemed to identify with the state. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, recalling his years serving in George W. Bush's White House, commented: "It's probably not uncommon for government officials to protest an upcoming story on surveillance or detention policy and say, you know, if you run that, it's going to harm the war effort and put Americans at…risk." Justice Elena Kagan chimed in: "I've had some experience encouraging press to suppress their own speech. 'You just wrote a bad editorial. Here are the five reasons you shouldn't write another one'….This happens literally thousands of times a day in the federal government."

Buttressing the claim that it was standard operating procedure for government officials to complain was the fact that many times the platform executives had cooperated with the government, endorsed a "partnership," and appeared to welcome state influence.

But if the state is victorious in this suit, the genius of the First Amendment will be collateral damage.

"The purpose of the Constitution and Bill of Rights…was to take government off the backs of people," wrote Justice William O. Douglas in Schneider v. Smith . "The First Amendment's ban against Congress 'abridging' freedom of speech [creates] a preserve where the views of the individual are made inviolate." Law professor Lucas Powe—once a clerk for Douglas—expanded: "Our traditions are clear. A fair press, as determined by a government mechanism, is not a free press. A free press may be fair; we hope it will not be irresponsible; but…for the press to serve as a check on the government it must be free to gather and report information about government and those who do or would govern."

The evidence in Murthy shows that the U.S. government actively monitors online discussions, targets speech that breaks no laws, and then aggressively requests that the speech's distribution be reduced or labeled as dubious or false. Government officials are free to make such points in open debate, but a Truth Squad operating behind the scenes violates the spirit and letter of the Constitution.

The Institute for Free Speech recommends a clarifying bright-line rule: "The government violates the First Amendment whenever it requests the removal of lawful political speech. There is no need to determine whether the request is 'coercive.'"

Private owners of media platforms enjoy First Amendment rights, and they are indeed constitutionally protected in determining whether to agree with one side or the other in moderating platform discussions. But when public resources are used to banish rival opinions, a constitutional boundary is crossed.

Alas, the U.S. has failed this test before. In the long-running error that allowed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to regulate broadcast TV and radio content under policies like the Fairness Doctrine, rules were not explicitly stated and the public was rarely informed. Instead, the commission engaged in what was known as "regulation by raised eyebrow." If a broadcaster did not refrain from engaging in controversial programming, as determined by FCC bureaucrats (perhaps acting on congressional or White House requests), it would risk costly challenges to its operating license. The raised eyebrow threatened free speech by transmitting political demands without a paper trail.

The First Amendment did not allow this form of government control with respect to newspapers, or even in the case of franchised cable TV operators, but the government seized a loophole in over-the-air transmission supposedly based on the "physical scarcity" of the radio spectrum. If applied today, this bogus justification for content regulation would absurdly allow the FCC to force The New York Times to give free editorial columns to critics, given that most subscribers receive the digital edition delivered via radio waves (Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G).

In the key legal test of the Fairness Doctrine, 1969's Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC , the Supreme Court recognized the lethality of subtle threats. While the Court allowed the Fairness Doctrine to stand, rejecting the First Amendment challenge to end it (which finally did happen via a Reagan-era FCC), it observed that a chilling effect could be triggered by rules requiring free (unpaid) equal time for opposing views: If broadcasters would consequently "eliminate their coverage of controversial issues, the purposes of the [fairness] doctrine would be stifled." Yet the Court dismissed the harm as merely speculative.

The Court was wrong: the case was, in fact, brought as part of a Kennedy-Johnson campaign aimed at filing Fairness Doctrine complaints to "harass and intimidate" anti-Administration broadcasters, as revealed in Fred Friendly's 1975 book, "The Good Guys, the Bad Guys, and the First Amendment."

Whatever one's views of the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, it is clear that many people (experts included) have changed their minds about them. It is well to recall that in October 2020, for example, MSNBC hosts denounced the Trump administration for rushing the Moderna and Pfizer shots to the public. The network appears to view things differently now. This should surprise no one. What would be shocking would be a situation where any group, including government experts, never let their understanding of the truth evolve. That's one reason freedom of debate is key.

Consider one of the most colossal censorship errors ever made in a free, democratic republic. In 1934, Winston Churchill's speech condemning "the danger of ignoring German rearmament" aired over the national radio system, the BBC. Churchill was then silenced—for six years the BBC barred his appearance. Only in 1940, when Hitler was marching through Europe, World War II had come to England's doorstep, and Winston Churchill was prime minister would his anti-Hitler message again be heard on the nation's airwaves. Whatever the chances that Churchill's plan of a tough-minded, preemptive move to block Adolf Hitler may have averted the "gathering storm," the tens of millions who died in the horrors of World War II would never know.

By suppressing his speech, the BBC's censors—the disinformation board of its time—likely contributed to carnage. In lieu of saving face for officials running the policy show, the lower-risk path would be to let competing viewpoints bloom. It's the profound gift of a rule prohibiting government's veto power over free speech.

Steve Bannon Has a Lot to Say Before Going to Prison Monday

Steve Bannon speaks at the Turning Point USA ''People's Convention,'' in Detroit, Michigan Dominic Gwinn/ZUMA Press Wire

Donald Trump confidante and far-right agitator Steve Bannon talks for nearly four hours most days of the week on his show, War Room. But starting Monday, the only people who will be listening to Bannon will be other inmates at a low-security federal prison in Danbury, Conn.

Two years ago, a federal jury found him guilty of contempt of Congress for ignoring a subpoena related to the investigation into the events of January 6 at the US Capitol. A judge sentenced Bannon to four months in prison. Last week, the Supreme Court finally rejected his last appeal, and Bannon will report to prison on Monday.

In the meantime, he seems to be trying to squeeze in as much talk as he possibly can before he’s silenced for most of the presidential campaign. An unrepentant Bannon has been making the rounds of the same mainstream media he claims to despise. He told Time magazine last week that he feels ready for prison. “I don’t fear this at all… I’m a political prisoner,” Bannon said. “I’m at war with the ruling class of this country… I’ve dedicated my life to this. I don’t have a social life. This is my life.” He added that Americans should not expect him to come out of prison “ripped,” as the 70-year-old pugilist would be toiling away in the library rather than working out.

On Saturday, he spoke with NBC News and doubled down on what sounded to innocent observers like calls for political violence:

When asked what his endgame is, Bannon told NBC News it was “victory or death of this republic.” “If we don’t win the—first of all, they shred the Constitution. It is the death of the constitutional American republic we know,” he continued.

In an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl, which aired Sunday , Bannon declared that Trump was going to win the election “in a landslide. ” He also pushed back on suggestions that he has helped incite political violence with his frequent references to civil war. But when Karl asked him whether he’d accept the results of the 2024 election and also urge his supporters to do the same, Bannon dodged. “Have you asked a Democrat this question, yes or no?” he responded.

“I haven’t seen Democrats storm the Capitol to try to stop an election,” Karl replied. “And by the way, I have no problem asking Democrats if they’re going to respect the election.”

When pressed about former Pres. Trump’s vow for “retribution” for his opponents if he returns to office, longtime aide Steve Bannon tells @JonKarl , “What we're saying is we want justice. We want to have full investigations.” https://t.co/k6RUJxeiWA pic.twitter.com/ypST82bXr8 — This Week (@ThisWeekABC) June 30, 2024

Karl also asked Bannon about Trump’s plans for a second term, and Trump’s “retribution” campaign against his perceived enemies. Warming to the topic, Bannon ticked off several people he believed would be investigated and possibly sent to prison, including Trump’s former Attorney General Bill Barr and FBI Director Christopher Wray. Among the top agenda items that he said Trump would focus on were “mass deportations,” and “trying to dismantle the administrative state brick by brick.”

Bannon has made many predictions about the MAGA movement’s eventual takeover of the country, but Karl pointed out during his interview that many of Bannon’s favored candidates lost in the last two midterm elections.

“This is a populist nationalist revolution,” Bannon replied. “It’s a process.”

He has no concerns about Trump’s ability to beat Biden, however. “We have 100 percent certainty we can beat Biden and beat him big, take the Senate, and pick up seats in the House,” Bannon insisted.

Even so, Bannon had not been in favor of Trump debating Biden on CNN last week, especially under the terms of the debate that allowed the moderators to cut the mikes when a candidate ran over his allotted time. He also believed that because the debate was so early in the campaign, it would give the Democrats time to swap out Biden for a better candidate, as he’d been predicting they’d do all along. “I didn’t think Biden would be the nominee,” he told Karl.

But he said Trump had, in effect, taken one for the team and participated in the debate for the country, suggesting that the former president had intended to show the world just how much Biden’s mental faculties had declined. Next time, he said, “President Trump should debate who the Democratic Party nominee is,” Bannon said. “It’s not a guy named Joe Biden.”

Bannon also has spoken directly to his supporters who watch his show, preparing them for his time off-air. On Friday, he told them not to send him any letters, which is promised he would not read. Instead, while he is locked up, he urged them to get to work.

“Use your time, husband your resources, and use your time. And your time is not sending me some missive in prison that I’m not going to read. You know why I’m not going to read?” he asked . “Because I’m going to be working. Outside of my job in prison, I’m going to be working the rest of the hours on what? Total and complete victory.”

Bannon will leave prison shortly before the November election.

Prince Harry award challenged by family of war hero

Decision to give Duke of Sussex award named after US war hero killed in Afghanistan has been criticised by the soldier’s mother

Prince Harry will receive the award for his work with injured veterans with the Invictus Games

The decision to give the Duke of Sussex a sports award named after an American war hero killed in Afghanistan has been criticised by the soldier’s mother.

The Duke will receive the Pat Tillman Award at the ESPY awards, a sports event run by TV network ESPN, for his work with injured veterans with the Invictus Games.

The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicised news that Prince Harry had won the award on their website, saying he was one of the “esteemed recipients” of the prize that recognised “exceptional individuals who exemplify courage, perseverance, and service”.

The mother of Pat Tillman , Mary, has now criticised the decision, reportedly telling the Mail on Sunday: “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.

“There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans.

“These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognised.”

Pat Tillman was an American football player who gave up his professional career after 9/11 to enlist in the US army.

Purple Heart

He served in Iraq and then Afghanistan, and was killed by friendly fire in 2004 and posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for bravery.

Previous winners of the ESPY named in his honour include the team of training staff at US football team the Buffalo Bills, who saved the life of a player who had a cardiac arrest on the field. Marcus Rashford, the British football player and campaigner, is also a previous recipient, along with retired US army Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans who suffered traumatic brain injury and founded adaptive racing squad Team Unbroken.

Announcing that Prince Harry would this year be one of the “incredible individuals” honoured by the ESPY awards, Kate Jackson, VP, Production at ESPN said: “These honorees have used their platforms to change the world and make it more inclusive for marginalised and suffering communities, demonstrating incredible resilience, positivity and perseverance, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them at the 2024 ESPYs.”

The decision has become a talking point in America, with Pat McAfee – a former NFL player who worked for ESPN – saying: “Why does the ESPYs do this ----?

“I don’t know anything about him except for the South Park episode and what I have learned from The Crown.

“But like, did his people know like ‘You publicly put me up for this award’. You’re just asking basically every person that considers themselves American like saying ‘This is bulls----’.

“Especially at a sports award type of thing… I assume he knew that. They didn’t expect that?”

In a discussion broadcast online, a second pundit called Boston Connor called it “probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve seen in my entire life”, while another, Ty Schmitt, called it “just a gimmick”.

The ESPY Awards will be held on July 11 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and will be hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s friend, tennis champion Serena Williams .
