I like this book store. Yes it's packed and messy. And yes it's very warm. (Oh my god it's so warm in here.) but the selection of books is incredible and I could get lost in here for hours. Service is friendly and both times we've been here we've ended up purchasing something.

Excellent used bookstore and prices are reasonable. I always spend several hours here when I visit Portland. It has an absolutely huge selection of literary biographies and literary criticism. Psychology section is also nice, as well as history, religion, and fiction. It is true that lighting in some places is a bit spare, and there are books on the floor. But I love looking for treasures and finding a good book I knew nothing about. Russ, the owner, always helps you find something if you ask.

Photo of Henry M.

This is a great used bookstore for those who enjoy just walking in and browsing, never quite knowing what you're going to find. It's almost intimidating when you walk in as it's just shelves upon shelves of books with even more books overflowing onto the floor. It's dark in here and sometimes difficult to read the titles of half the books in the aisle because it's too dark. They have books on every possible subject. They're sort of organized in some way, but it's easier just to ask the owner and have him lead you to the area since it's hard to figure out how everything is set up. If you enjoy spending an afternoon just looking through shelves of books and being delighted when you find something old and interesting for a good price, this is your place. I deducted a star because it's actually a bit TOO. There are books everywhere. The books on the floor obscure the bottom row of books on the shelves. There are books laying horizontally above the other books. And it is so dark in some areas that it becomes a chore to try to see what's there. And all the nicer stuff is behind an area that only the owner can get to so you'd never find it by browsing on your own.

yes books

Great used bookstore if you're looking for general or niche reference and non-fiction books on almost any topic, thoroughly categorized and delineated. Some paperbacks of fictional works too, and a cool selection of old engraved and handpainted prints. Atmosphere inside is quite stale, but I didn't mind this. Owner/manager was a stony guy who let me browse to my heart's content, but he was so helpful when asked! (I was struggling on deciding between botanical flower prints, and he gave me a considerate opinion when I asked him what he thought.)

This is what a used bookstore is supposed to be. It's a bit of a hot mess but it's incredibly full of magical things. I found gifts for two loved ones and a delightful memoir to occupy myself with, as well as a tiny edition of some poetry from Neruda including both Spanish and English. Staff were kind and very patient. Make an expedition of it, allow plenty of time. Eat lunch at Empire right up the block. Caveat: not sure this place is possible if you're in a wheelchair. Very narrow aisles. You'll probably be okay on crutches, though.

Customer service is really important. In 11/21 I came to Portland and was excited to check out used book stores. I stopped at Yes Books and another shop close by. At Yes Books, the shop keeper treated me like an intrusion and very curt when I asked questions. Conversely, the shopkeeper at the other shop was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Heading back to quench my book addiction and know where I'm not going. I will solely be going to the other shop.

Photo of Kate S.

This is the kind of bookstore you either love or hate. I love it. I'm going to list a few negative things but I love every bit of it. You will not be able to easily find exactly the book you might be searching for. The aisles are narrow, there are books piled on the floor and on top of the shelves, there are books literally everywhere. You could spend hours here. Days. Prices seem reasonable (look inside the front cover for the penciled price). You will find some amazing gems. Happy reading!

This is THE BEST used book store [to get lost in] in Portland, Maine, a must-see! Extensive collections and a wide variety - you could spend HOURS here. Whether you're a new reader or an experienced collector, this place is absolutely worth a visit. A bonus: Yes Books has a respectable selection of rare books as well, if you're in the market. Go check it out! You won't be sorry.

Yes books is an amazing store.I live in Pennsylvania and every time I can get to Yes Books I go and get lost in there for awhile..

Love this book store! It's messy and dark and dusty and filled with real treasures! You can usually ask the woman working and she'll get you started in the right direction (she usually digs with me), but then the hunt is on. This isn't a store for someone looking to be in and out with the new twighlight in a matter of minutes. This is for book enthusiasts who don't mind spending time digging and searching for the perfect book. I go in when I don't have a book to read, with no idea what I want to read, and usually come out with something great!

A brand new book on prog rock legends Yes , A Visual Biography , written by rock writer Martin Popoff, is to be published by Wymer Publishing.

Yes: A Visual Biography will be published this coming Friday, July 9. The 224 page, A4 hardback book “documents the progressive rock pioneer’s first twelve years from the release of their eponymous debut album through to 1980’s Drama: A suitable name for a band whose career has been full of drama as documented in Popoff’s narrative that charts Yes’s ups and downs as the band glided out of the sixties with a full-on assault on the seventies music scene that saw them become one of the biggest acts in the world—selling out venues from New York’s Madison Square Garden to London’s Wembley Arena.”

Popoff draws on his own interviews conducted with various band members throughout the last two decades, leaving much of the story to be told in their own words, along with a smattering of album reviews by the author and others.

The triumphant  New  York  Times  Bestseller

The  Tonight Show  Summer Reads Pick

Named one of the best books of the year by  People ,  Vogue ,  Parade , NPR, and  Elle

“This is one beautiful book. I was wowed by Keane’s writing and narrative skill—and by what she knows about trouble.” —Stephen King

A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, and the power of forgiveness.

Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope are two NYPD rookies assigned to the same Bronx precinct in 1973. They aren’t close friends on the job, but end up living next door to each other outside the city. What goes on behind closed doors in both houses—the loneliness of Francis’s wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian’s wife, Anne, sets the stage for the stunning events to come.

Ask Again, Yes by award-winning author Mary Beth Keane, is a beautifully moving exploration of the friendship and love that blossoms between Francis’s youngest daughter, Kate, and Brian’s son, Peter, who are born six months apart. In the spring of Kate and Peter’s eighth grade year a violent event divides the neighbors, the Stanhopes are forced to move away, and the children are forbidden to have any further contact.

But Kate and Peter find a way back to each other, and their relationship is tested by the echoes from their past. Ask Again, Yes reveals how the events of childhood look different when reexamined from the distance of adulthood—villains lose their menace, and those who appeared innocent seem less so. Kate and Peter’s love story is marked by tenderness, generosity, and grace.

“One of the most unpretentiously profound books I’ve read in a long time… Keane writes with deep familiarity and precision about the lives of this particular generation… As a writer, Keane reminds me a lot of Ann Patchett: Both have the magical ability to seem to be telling ‘only’ a closely-observed domestic tale that transforms into something else deep and, yes, universal. In Keane’s case, that ‘something else’ is a story about forgiveness and acceptance… modestly magnificent.” — Maureen Corrigan,  Fresh Air

“A beautiful novel, bursting at the seams with empathy.” — Brianna Kovan,  Elle

“Keane’s novel is a rare example of propulsive storytelling with profound insights about blame, forgiveness and abiding love.” — People Magazine

“A profound story… Keane’s gracefully restrained prose gives her characters dignity… shows how difficult forgiveness can be—and how it amounts to a kind of hard-won grace.” — Vogue

“Keane writes with acute sensitivity and her characters are consistently, authentically lived-in. . . . smartly told.” — Entertainment Weekly

”This is one beautiful book. I was wowed by Keane’s writing and narrative skill—and by what she knows about trouble.” —Stephen King

“I devoured this astonishing tale of two families linked by chance, love, and tragedy. Mary Beth Keane gives us characters so complex and alive that I find myself still thinking of them days after turning the final page. A must-read.” —J. Courtney Sullivan, author of  Saints for All Occasions

“Mary Beth Keane takes on one of the most difficult problems in fiction—how to write about human decency. In  Ask Again, Ye s, Keane creates a layered emotional truth that makes a compelling case for compassion over blame, understanding over grudge, and the resilience of hearts that can accept the contradictions of love.” —  Louise Erdrich, author of  The Round House

“Ask Again, Yes  is a powerful and moving novel of family, trauma, and the defining moments in people’s lives. Mary Beth Keane is a writer of extraordinary depth, feeling and wit. Readers will love this book, as I did.” —Meg Wolitzer, author of  The Female Persuasion

“Remarkable.” — Booklist

“Mary Beth Keane looks past the veneer that covers ordinary moments and into the very heart of real life. There’s a Tolstoyan gravity, insight, and moral heft in these pages, and Keane’s ability to plumb the depths of authentic feeling while avoiding sentimentality leaves one shaking one’s head in frank admiration. This wonderful book is so many things: a gripping family drama; a sensitive meditation on mental illness; a referendum on the power and cost of loyalty; a ripping yarn that takes us down into the depths and back up; in short, a triumph.” — Matthew Thomas, author of  We Are Not Ourselves

It’s been more than a year since Alyse Anderson last appeared in ONE Championship, but her return has finally been booked.

The Invicta FC veteran is scheduled to fight Victoria Souza in an atomweight bout at ONE 168, which takes place in Denver at the Ball Arena on Sept. 7. ONE officials confirmed the matchup to MMA Fighting on Friday.

Anderson hopes for a better outcome when she returns to Colorado, which was also the site of her most recent outing against current ONE atomweight champion Stamp Fairtex . Anderson suffered a knockout loss that dropped her to 1-2 overall since joining the ONE roster in 2021.

She’ll attempt to get back on track against Souza, who sports the same 1-2 record in ONE, with her most recent appearance coming in March in a loss to Noelle Grandjean.

Anderson vs. Souza joins a growing lineup headed to Denver as ONE seeks a new main event after Stamp Fairtex suffered a knee injury that forced her out for several months.

There’s no word yet on a replacement main event, but the card also features 21-year-old grappling sensation Kade Ruotolo taking on Mikey Musumeci as well as British Muay Thai champion Jonathan Haggerty defending his belt against Superlek Kiatmoo9.

10 Best Netflix Movies That Are Based on Books

F or any avid reader, diving into a new book is an enlightening experience unlike any other. For however long the book may last, the reader gets into the author's world, picturing the characters as he or she imagines them, and supporting them through thick and thin as they face the many obstacles on their journey towards the end of the story. Wrapping up a book that we really like leaves us feeling both satisfied and nostalgic, creating a small void in our hearts that only restores our hopes of reconnecting with the story and its characters once a film or TV adaptation of the book is announced.

Over time, many, many books have made their way to the silver screen, introducing stories of all kinds to an even wider audience. Thus, adaptations of children's books, comedies, and even self-help books have been released, and while many of them managed to grow into productions as acclaimed as the original piece, others floundered and completely disappointed fans. Netflix has treated audiences to many book adaptations over the years. Here's a look back at 10 of the best.

Yes Day (2021)

A mom and dad who usually say no decide to say yes to their kids' wildest requests with a few ground rules on a whirlwind day of fun and adventure. Starring Jennifer Garner and Jenna Ortega.

Release Date 2021-03-12

Director Miguel Arteta

Cast Everly Carganilla, Julian Lerner, Edgar Ramirez, Jenna Ortega, Jennifer Garner, Tracie Thoms

Main Genre Comedy

The 2021 family comedy, Yes Day , introduces Allison and Carlos, a married couple that used to be adventurous, but over the years became overly protective of their children. In an effort to bring the family together, they decide to treat their kids to a "yes day," a 24-hour window during which they can't decline anything the kids ask for, embarking on an adventure of epic proportions.

What Makes It Great

This movie is based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld's children's book, and, in fact, went into production in the wake of its star Jennifer Garner's tradition of celebrating "yes days" with her own children. It's a fun film for the whole family to enjoy; plus, it encourages everyone to embrace a lovely tradition that is sure to bring great memories.

The Devil All the Time (2020)

The devil all the time.

Release Date 2020-09-11

Director Antonio Campos

Cast Emilio Subercaseaux Campos, Michael Banks Repeta, Donald Ray Pollock, Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgard

Main Genre Thriller

Antonio Campos' The Devil All the Time is based on the novel by Donald Ray Pollock, and aided by exceptional performances from Tom Holland , Bill Skarsgård, Sebastian Stan, and Mia Wasikowska. It follows a group of people from Ohio, whose dark histories intertwine over the decades following World War II.

While this 2020 film was met with mixed reviews from critics, it is a worthwhile production for several reasons. The adaptation preserves the essence of the original work, introducing a gripping story that leaves you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, and, to top it all off, it features terrific performances from some of the most popular actors in today's industry.

Moxie (2021)

Inspired by her mom's rebellious past and a confident new friend, a shy 16-year-old publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school. Direced by Amy Poehler.

Release Date 2021-03-03

Director Amy Poehler

Cast J.J. Totah, Clark Gregg, Ike Barinholtz, Josephine Langford, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Marcia Gay Harden

Rating PG-13

Weary of gender disparities at her school and having to deal with bullying and harassment from her peers, 16-year-old Vivian draws inspiration from her mother's rebellious past to distribute a feminist zine at the institution that will unexpectedly start a revolution. That's the plot of Moxie , Amy Poehler's 2021 film based on Jennifer Mathieu's young adult novel of the same name.

Showcasing a much more diverse cast than the source work, Moxie does a fine job translating Mathieu's story to film in an entertaining yet responsible way, sticking to the novel's empowering message while making a few changes along the way, such as the decision to feature a woman school principal instead of a male one, to exemplify that sexism is not restricted to the male gender alone.

The Kissing Booth (2018)

The kissing booth.

Release Date 2018-05-11

Director Vince Marcello

Cast Chloe Williams, Jack Fokkens, Caitlyn de Abrue, Lincoln Pearson, Megan du Plessis, Stephen Jennings

The Kissing Booth hit Netflix in 2018, and its fan reception was so impressive that it spurred the development of two sequels almost immediately. This Vince Marcello film stars Joey King, Jacob Elordi, and Joel Courtney, and follows Elle, a shy teenager who falls in love with her best friend Lee's older brother, something that puts their friendship in jeopardy.

Beth Reekles wrote The Kissing Booth as a teenager because she wanted to read a novel about a regular teen romance , the kind that anyone her age could relate to. That's precisely what made her book — and the movie, for that matter — an absolute hit with audiences: Netflix's adaptation manages to convey the core of Reekles' work, while also appealing to a mature audience with nods to rom-com productions and stars of the 1980s and 1990s.

The Old Guard (2020)

The old guard.

Release Date 2020-07-10

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood

Cast Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kiki Layne, Luca Marinelli, Marwan Kenzari, Charlize Theron, Matthias Schoenaerts

2020 marked the premiere of The Old Guard , a Gina Prince-Bythewood film written by Greg Rucka and inspired by his comic book of the same name. This production, starring Charlize Theron, follows a group of immortal mercenaries who go on a manhunt when someone threatens to reveal their best-kept secret.

Involving the author of the original book in some way in a film adaptation is always a good idea, and The Old Guard is no exception to this rule. The film managed to treat audiences to scenes as exciting as the ones in the comic book, while featuring brilliant performances that further enhanced the story.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind marked Chiwetel Ejiofor's directorial debut with a bang in 2019 by bringing William Kamkwamba's memoirs to the silver screen. This acclaimed production features William, a Malawian boy with a knack for electronics who, upon being kicked out of school for financial reasons, sets out to build a windmill to save his family and community from starvation.

This 2019 film stirs as many feelings as the book that inspired it, and managed to garner rave reviews from critics for, among many things, delivering a dramatic story that keeps you engaged while still paying attention to the cultural and socio-political context of the city in which it takes place.

Gerald's Game (2017)

Aided by performances from some of his most frequent collaborators, Mike Flanagan successfully adapted Gerald's Game , a Stephen King novel that was long thought to be unfilmable (per Cinema Blend ). It follows a married couple on a getaway to a remote lake house, seeking to rekindle their passion, yet fate has something else planned for them, and leaves the woman with no choice but to figure out a way to survive after the man suddenly passes away, leaving her handcuffed to the bed.

Flanagan is an avid fan of King's work, and sought for many years to adapt Gerald's Game to film. His passion and determination to treat the writer's content with respect ensured that his film not only captured the core of the original work despite the alterations that were made, but also became an absolute hit with audiences.

Mudbound (2017)

Release Date 2017-11-16

Director Dee Rees

Cast Rob Morgan, Carey Mulligan, Jonathan Banks, Jason Mitchell, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund

In 2017, Dee Rees took the helm of Mudbound , the film adaptation of Hillary Jordan's novel that received, among other accolades, four nominations at the Academy Awards. This historical drama follows a white and a Black family in a racist rural Mississippi town, whose lives intertwine after their sons return from World War II and strike up a friendship.

There are several reasons why Mudbound became such an acclaimed production. Much of it stems from Rees' ability to stick as close to the original work as possible, something that triggered emotions in the audience that were very similar to the ones they felt when reading the book. On top of this, the film features a sensational cast that does a great job bringing Jordan's characters to life.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

To All the Boys I've Loved Before is another popular young adult novel that received its film adaptation via Netflix. It is directed by Susan Johnson based on Jenny Han's book and follows Lara Jean, a teenager whose life is turned upside down after her secret love letters find their way into the hands of her crushes.

This film, starring Lana Condor, is a prime example of an excellent adaptation of a book. Its filmmakers were successful in selecting the storylines to portray in the movie, focusing on the main character's journey and introducing supporting characters that are similar to the ones in the book, but refined. These details made the film a smash hit that was later followed by two sequels.

The Irishman (2019)

The irishman.

Release Date 2019-11-01

Director Martin Scorsese

Cast Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Anna Paquin, Joe Pesci, Jesse Plemons, Harvey Keitel

Main Genre Crime

Rounding out this list is The Irishman , one of the most recent films in Martin Scorsese's career . This movie, based on Charles Brandt's book I Heard You Paint Houses , stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, and follows the life and career of Frank Sheeran, a war veteran turned hitman who worked with some of the most powerful players in organized crime.

With Scorsese at the helm and presenting such a sublime cast, it was nearly impossible for The Irishman to do anything but become one of the greatest contemporary productions. This 2019 film garnered great acclaim and many accolades, including an Academy Award nomination for Steven Zaillian over his screenplay, which managed to stick to the original piece even when taking a few creative liberties.

It’s a big year for Dungeons & Dragons . Not only has Wizards of the Coast released the final campaign for the original 5th edition rules , but also a slew of products in celebration of the game’s 50th anniversary — including three revised core rulebooks . Even if the D&D Lego sets and Converse sneakers weren’t your thing, you might be interested in their upcoming offering: Worlds & Realms: Adventures from Greyhawk to Faerûn and Beyond , written by former D&D designer Adam Lee ( Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus , Waterdeep: Dragon Heist ).

Typically priced at $50, the book is available to pre-order ahead of its Oct. 29 release at a slightly discounted cost of $46.50. And if you’re someone who loves to immerse themselves in D&D lore and world-building, you’ll definitely want to check this book out.

D&D’s multiverse is extremely vast and complicated, and Worlds & Realms seems to fill a much-needed gap to help both newcomers and long-time players make sense of its fantastical realms. Featuring artwork pulled from 50 years of sourcebooks and adventures, each chapter of this illustrated guide takes a close look at one of the many worlds, planes, and settings in the D&D multiverse — from the beloved plane of Mystara, to the perilous Shadowfell, to Spelljammer ’s boundless Astral Sea.

But this is no dry, matter-of-fact history book. Instead, readers will explore these settings through the narration of the archmage Mordenkainen, who shares his personal experiences of these locations and thoughts on the legendary characters who’ve lived there. Readers will dive deep into Mordenkainen’s beloved home of Greyhawk (the default setting for the soon to be released 2024 revision of the Dungeon Master’s Guide ), and learn how his belief in the Balance influences his run-ins with creatures across the multiverse.

Worlds & Realms also features original stories by Jasmine Bhullar, Geoffrey Golden, Jody Houser and Eric Campbell, and Jaleigh Johnson.

Polygon has an exclusive first look inside Worlds & Realms below, revealing 22 of the book’s 368 pages. To guide you through them, we’ve enlisted our own narrator — author Adam Lee himself — to share insights into the historic art and how Worlds & Realms came together.

Our interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Worlds & Realms: Adventures from Greyhawk to Faerûn and Beyond

Prices taken at time of publishing.

  • $47 at Amazon
  • $50 at Target

The title page from the Dungeons & Dragons Worlds & Realms book. The left page is old D&D art featuring a wizard by a cauldron. The right page is white with the title and author info.

Adam Lee: There’s a place within my mind that is reserved for childhood memories, which are of a different quality than other memories. This image lives within that space. I remember looking at it with my little kid imagination, each detail providing stories in my mind.

Even before I knew how to play D&D or even what it was, I was making stories just looking at the art on the box. Erol Otus’ art is so mythic and perfect for capturing the vibe of D&D in the 80’s.

Like, what was through that dark, stone archway in the background?

The table of contents spread from the Worlds & Realms book. The left page shows a gibbering in a stone room and the right is a white page listing the book’s contents.

It’s so strange to look at the Table of Contents, as it seems so short for 50 years and the impact D&D has had on culture throughout that time.

Lots more could be in here, but then this book would be big enough to possibly be a mimic.

Also, one of the best gibbering mouther illustrations ever.

The first spread of the introduction section in Worlds & Realms. The left page shows the mage Mordenkainen staring ahead on a layered teal background with gears and circles in the foreground. The right page is white with the black text of the book’s introduction.

I want to say that it took a lot of time, staring at the blank page in artistic agony, crumpling page after page, before the first words came for the introduction.

But I became (my version) of Mordenkainen fairly quickly and his voice and his intentions were apparent. I had spent some time thinking about the world from his perspective while working on D&D, so I wasn’t working from zero, but he flowed onto the page and there were times I had to write fast to keep up.

As always, amazing art inspires the imagination. When I first saw this piece come in after being commissioned, I felt like it revealed another dimension of the master mage.

The first spread of the Material Plane section of the Worlds & Realms book. The left page says “Part 1 The Material Plane” while the right is a block of text from Mordenkainen’s narration.

One of the things about writing from the perspective of an archmage is to find out what actually strikes them as important. What do they notice? When their world is so fantastical, what compels them to look deeper?

Here’s a person who wields the power of magic, who has traveled across the multiverse, who has fought interdimensional monsters, and has dined with angelic beings. Why not leave humanity behind for all the splendor of a host of extreme and otherworldly experiences?

I wanted to shine a light on the value of humanity through the eyes of Mordenkainen. For some reason, he didn’t join the heavenly host, nor did he become a demigod, or a tyrant on some high mountain peak. He became a protector of the multiverse.

I think there’s something about humanity that he’s immensely curious about. There’s something sacred within each being. A mystery beyond mere magic.

A two-page spread from the Worlds & Realms book showing magic users standing on a cliffside attacking a giant beast. On the right-hand page, the section title “GREYHAWK” is printed.

To get a chance to write about Greyhawk from the point of view of Mordenkainen was an experience that (at times) was not unlike this illustration. But that’s the adventure of life. I never know what is going to come out of the forest.

The first two pages in the Greyhawk section of the Worlds & Realms book, which features an introduction, a section titled “WILD AND UNKNOWN,” and a section titled “A TALE OF TSOJCANTH. The right page also includes two versions of art for White Plum Mountain, one a black-and-white line drawing, and the other in full painted color.

Figuring out how to write this book — a combination of lore and story — was something that I thought about a lot.

I wanted to talk about the worlds and share the existing lore, but I also wanted to bring something new to it, something never before revealed so that no matter what your experience was with D&D, you were going to find out new and interesting stuff.

Writing from the point of view of Mordenkainen allowed me to stretch outside of canon lore to allow for a bit of wizardly speculation which I found to be exciting — I was on an adventure with Mordenkainen as he investigated his own mind and the mysteries of the multiverse.

A two-page spread from the Worlds & Realms book. On the left page, it’s an image of a warrior holding a dragonlance next to a red cloaked figure holding a staff. Behind them is a golden dragon. On the right page, the text is broken up into two sections, titled “THE DRAGONLANCES” and “THE BALANCE.”

Long before I worked on D&D as a professional, I was a player and a fan of these worlds, and I had my own opinions about them.

While working on D&D, I had a chance to dive into many of the worlds at varying depths, but usually from a very agnostic point of view — we set the stage of the adventure and described the world for the Dungeon Master to interpret as they will. The players would experience the story and then form their own opinions.

When I played the character of Mordenkainen for this book, I got to write from his POV. After a while, I began to have different opinions of the worlds as seen through his eyes. The most surprising reaction to any of these worlds was his reaction to Krynn.

I must say, I learned a lot from seeing Krynn through his eyes.

A two-page spread from the Worlds & Realms book featuring text on the left page about “An Elemental Education” with the right page shows a blue crystalline and stone cavern.

When writing anything for D&D, I am always thinking about a DM getting a great idea for a one shot or a character for their campaign. I’m always in “modular mode” where I know that any chunk of what I am writing can be taken out and put into someone’s game.

I wish when I go into the great beyond that I can sit in front of a cosmic TV and watch how many snippets of my silly writing made it into games or made people smile or laugh. Hopefully, I’d be watching for a long time. That would bring me great joy.

A two-page spread from the Worlds & Realms book about the Domains of Dread. There’s text on both pages in blue boxes. The left page features an image of a Darklord while the right shows a castle in Barovia.

Revisiting Ravenloft for Curse of Strahd was one of my favorite times working on D&D. We dealt with so many questions about the nature of evil, the story of Strahd, and the metaphysics of Barovia.

It was, ironically, great fun to live in Barovia, walk with the people, explore the domain, and write a few locations that were certain to be disturbing.

A two-page spread from the Worlds & Realms book. The left page shows two images. On top are two people fighting a two-headed monster. The bottom image is a person and a panther fighting a very large clawed beast. The right page shows a black and white and full-color version of the two-headed monster.

Every version of D&D has its take on the legendary monsters and villains of D&D. For Out of the Abyss we got the treat of revisiting all the superstar demon lords and do the 5th edition version of them to continue that creative legacy.

For me, D&D is as much a visual experience as it is a written one, and the images from the game’s earliest of days to now have an iconic stature in my mind and are forever imprinted in my memory.

A two-page spread of the Worlds & Realms book. The left page has text in a section titled “A CITY OF DOORS” and an image of a ranger falling through a door into open air. The right page has text in a section titled “THE LADY OF PAIN” with an image of the character (a tall, gaunt woman in red robes) behind a shattered window.

Throughout Mordenkainen’s journey, the Balance is what keeps him grounded, and potentially keeps him sane, as he explores the multiverse, encountering all manner of fantastical beings and bizarre entities.

The multiverse is a bewildering place, and without a purpose, it can become as confusing as a hall of mirrors. But through it all, Mordenkainen follows the beacon of the Balance like the string that allowed Theseus to navigate the labyrinth, slay the Minotaur, and emerge alive and victorious.

We look forward to reading near a body of water all year, and this season’s food-themed releases don’t disappoint. Many of them are transportive, so whether you bring them on vacation or read them at home imagining a vacation, they’ll hopefully offer that needed bit of summer escapism.

This season’s food-themed books mirror real-life trends. It seems like everyone’s ready once again for their “ Euro summer ,” and that extends to our new slate of main characters. Italy, and especially Sicily, continue to have a moment. And we’re still clearly thirsty for chefs — amid all these releases comes season four of The Bear on June 27 . So whether you’re into historical fiction, family drama, memoir that feels like a romp, or fluffy and flirty romance, these are the food-related books you might want to toss into your beach bag this summer.

The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza

Dutton, out now

Jo Piazza’s newest book has gotten plenty of buzz, and for good reason. It’s an appealing mix of romantic escapism, whodunit intrigue, and feminist introspection. Sara is a burned-out butcher-turned-chef who’s reeling from her failed marriage and closing her Philly restaurant. When her great-aunt dies and leaves behind a plot of land in Sicily, Sarah travels to Italy hoping to find an easy solution to her financial problems. It’s not so simple: She learns that her great-grandmother, Serafina, might have been murdered — a plotline inspired by Piazza’s own family history . Of course, this all happens in Sicily, so there’s good food, flirtation, and mafia drama, too. With elements of historical fiction (Sara and Serafina’s stories are told in alternating timelines), romance, and mystery, The Sicilian Inheritance has something for everyone. — Bettina Makalintal

The House of Broken Bricks by Fiona Williams

Henry Holt & Company, out now

Fiona Williams’s debut is for readers looking for something more serious. An approachable work of literary fiction, The House of Broken Bricks is an atmospheric, character-driven story of a family that’s falling apart. Tess, a Jamaican immigrant, lives in the English countryside with her husband Richard and her twin sons Max and Sonny. Race and the tensions it causes are a throughline: Tess is Black, Richard is white, and Max and Sonny, despite being twins, present as different races. As the family grapples with grief and tragedy, food features frequently, usually as an effort toward comfort and belonging, and Williams’s descriptions of food (in addition to nature and setting) are vivid and easy to imagine. The chapters, which alternate between family members, are short and self-contained. This is one you can pick up and put down to enjoy in small bites, lest seagulls or small children interrupt your reading. — BM

Effie Olsen’s Summer Special by Rochelle Bilow

Berkley Books, out now

Homecomings are always a compelling premise, and Effie Olsen’s Summer Special is no exception. It follows Effie, a chef, as she returns to her picturesque Maine hometown for what she’s convinced will be her last summer there. She gets a job at the local, highly sought-out Michelin-starred restaurant, Brown Butter, where, it turns out, her high school best friend Ernie also works. After a fight, she hasn’t talked to or seen him in years. Naturally, Effie’s summer offers her some surprises. With fizzy writing, a dreamy seaside setting, and hunger-inducing descriptions of food, Bilow captures that sentimental yearning of summer and ticks all the boxes of a satisfying, read-in-a-weekend beach book. — BM

The Secrets of the Little Greek Taverna by Erin Palmisano

Grand Central Publishing, out now

Los Angeles waitress Jory St. James is a wanderer — the type of person who never wants to be pinned down in one place for too long. When she happens upon a brochure advertising a yacht trip to Greece, she can’t resist emptying her savings for a Mediterranean trip to satisfy her wanderlust.

When she gets there, without her phone or a single reservation, fate lands Jory in the village of Potamia, where she stays at a guesthouse surrounded by an olive grove. Jory quickly falls in love with Potamia’s quirky charms, some of which are tinged with magic. And her arrival sparks big change in the tiny village, especially for Cressida Thermopolis, the guesthouse’s formidable owner. Cressida is a distinctly gifted baker who’s mourning the loss of her husband, and Jory shows up just in time to change Cressida’s — and Potamia’s — trajectory forever as the duo plans to open the guesthouse’s next-door taverna.

Full of food, humor, and a big pinch of romance, The Secrets of the Little Greek Taverna will instantly transport you to the tiny island of Naxos, even if a flight to the isles isn’t in the budget this summer. And don’t skip author Erin Palmisano’s decadent moussaka recipe, included at the end of the novel. — Amy McCarthy

Triple Sec by TJ Alexander

Atria Books, June 4

If you have throuples on the brain after watching Challengers (or reading all that polyamory discourse ), might I recommend TJ Alexander’s Triple Sec ? With their first two books, Chef’s Kiss and Chef’s Choice , Alexander proved themselves talented in food-themed romance . With Triple Sec , they shift their focus to cocktail bars as they follow Mel, a bartender in New York City, as she makes her first foray into polyamory after meeting a married couple named Bebe and Kade. It’s not just new romance keeping Mel busy: She also enters a citywide cocktail competition in hopes of winning money to open her own bar. As with Alexander’s previous books, Triple Sec is a fun, flirtatious story that’ll pair well with a cold drink enjoyed poolside. Like a good cocktail, it goes down easy. — BM

I’m Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself: One Woman’s Pursuit of Pleasure in Paris by Glynnis MacNicol

Penguin Life, June 11

In 2021, after a year of being stuck indoors due to the pandemic, writer Glynnis MacNicol headed to Paris. She’d spent many summers in the city, and following a year of deprivation, she’s fully prepared to indulge in its specific pleasures — good wine, French men, and of course, incredible food — with abandon. In this vulnerable essay collection, plates of pain perdu and mugs of chocolat chaud punctuate meditations on writing, dating, and economic uncertainty — you know, all the essential existential crises of our era. Paris, with its stunning scenery and refined charm, is the perfect setting for MacNicol to soothe what ails her. — AM

Pearce Oysters by Joselyn Takacs

Zibby Books, June 25

Pearce Oysters is a family drama centered around a Louisiana oyster-farming family in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Even before the oil spill happens, the Pearces have been having a rough time. Jordan has taken over the family business, which is struggling, after the unexpected death of his father; his brother Benny is adrift, living in New Orleans until circumstances call him back home; and their mother May feels lost without her husband. Takacs’s debut novel is a thoughtful story of family and community that also considers important themes of corporate greed and environmental crisis. With so many fictional food books focused on chefs, it’s refreshing to see the focus shifted to farmers. Pearce Oysters is a reminder of the fragile ecosystem we all live in. — BM

The Townsend Family Recipe for Disaster by Shauna Robinson

Sourcebooks Landmark, July 2

Mae Townsend is getting married. That would normally be cause for celebration, but the thought of dealing with her complicated family has her on edge. Mae’s parents split when she was young, and she yearns for connection with her late father’s side of the family, who didn’t approve of his relationship with her mother. And now she’s trying to put all that aside so she can marry her fiance Connor, who hails from a wealthy family of white wedding planners.

As they plan the big day — complete with a deeply millennial doughnut wall — Mae recognizes that her wedding might be her only opportunity to heal her family’s decades-long estrangement, and get to the bottom of some lingering family secrets. A family tragedy spurs Mae to head to North Carolina in search of answers, and when she arrives, she tries to build connection the best way she knows how: by cooking for her estranged relatives.

It’s of course much more complicated than that, as Mae soon learns. As she hones in on perfecting her grandmother’s famed mac and cheese, Mae gets a crash course in her family’s distinct dynamic. Like a good meal, don’t be surprised if you finish The Townsend Family Recipe for Disaster all in one sitting. — AM

Just One Taste by Lizzy Dent

G.P. Putnam’s Sons, July 16

Lizzy Dent’s The Summer Job — which featured a woman who found love while impersonating her sommelier friend at a Michelin-starred restaurant in the Scottish countryside — was one of my favorite light reads of 2021. Dent’s newest, similarly food-related book, Just One Taste , didn’t disappoint either. It follows restaurant critic Olive, whose estranged chef father has just died and, to her chagrin, left her his restaurant. Not only that, but she must also travel to Sicily to finish the cookbook he was writing. And because Olive is a restaurant critic, not a recipe developer, she must work on it with Leo, her father’s former sous chef and her nemesis — you can probably tell where this is going. Just One Taste had all the things I liked so much in The Summer Job : bubbly writing, a sense of humor, a dreamy setting, and page-turning chemistry. — BM

The Pairing by Casey McQuiston

St. Martin’s Griffin, August 6

The newest from author Casey McQuiston follows sommelier Theo and immensely flirtatious pastry chef Kit, two exes who inadvertently end up on a food tour together across Europe after years of no contact. As you might expect, The Pairing offers plenty of vacation inspiration as they travel through Bordeaux, Monaco, Florence, Naples, and more. Sexy and queer, this is certainly a book for hedonists: Rounding out Theo and Kit’s pleasure cruise of food and drink is the hookup competition that they’ve challenged each other to as they cross the continent. The Pairing has all the sass and seduction that made McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue such a hit, but with more spice. It’s slightly too bad that it comes out so late in the season, but save it for those final beach days and let it guide your plans for next summer. — BM

Celebrities At The Los Angeles Clippers Game

Hello Blazer’s Edge community! While the NBA Playoffs are heating up with Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals tonight, the Portland Trail Blazers have been on summer vacation for over a month.

Given that predicament and because this has turned out to be a slow-news Sunday, we’re opening up another Bonus Community Chat. A few weeks ago, we asked you for book recommendations to help out a Blazer’s Edge reader, Son of Maurice, who had extra down time while recovering from surgery. Today, we’re asking you all for movie recommendations!

I’m not sure if Son of Maurice is a big film buff, but I’m always up for hearing new movie recs, especially on a three-day weekend where I won’t have much to do on Memorial Day tomorrow.

The film-centric social media site Letterboxd often asks actors and directors to give their top four favorite films. We’ll copy that template and ask you all to give us your “Top Four” (four of your favorites is fine, too, if it’s too hard to narrow it down). I’ll kick things off with a few of my faves.

The Grand Budapest Hotel , directed by Wes Anderson (2014). This whimsical movie about a well-mannered, charismatic concierge and his junior lobby boy working at a first-class 1930s hotel feels like stepping into a wonderfully original fairytale. Every time I watch it I find a new line of dialogue that makes me laugh. It’s my favorite Wes Anderson movie and probably my favorite comfort movie to throw on.

It’s a Wonderful Life , directed by Frank Capra (1946). My pick for the best Christmas movie ever. I’ve been liking sentimental movies more and more, and this movie certainly packs on the sentimentality.

Moonstruck , directed by Norman Jewison (1987). A strange romantic comedy set in Brooklyn starring Cher as an Italian-American widow who falls for her new fiancee’s younger brother, played by a young Nic Cage, a bread maker who lost his hand in a bread-slicing accident. Cher’s family is hilarious, and so is the rest of the ensemble cast. It’s kind of a hard movie to describe, with an undertone of magic or dreaminess throughout. Just watch it if you haven’t and see what you think.

The Princess Bride , directed by Rob Reiner (1987). Unintentionally, I have picked another 1987 movie. Believe it or not, I didn’t see this until a few months ago and absolutely loved it. Judging by how many times that scenes from this movie pop up in GIFs in the Blazer’s Edge comment section, it would seem a lot of you love it, too. The “Battle of Wits” scene had me laughing uncontrollably.

So, please share some of your favorites in the comment section below!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com review.

“A beautiful novel, bursting at the seams with empathy.” — Brianna Kovan, Elle

"Keane’s novel is a rare example of propulsive storytelling with profound insights about blame, forgiveness and abiding love.” -- People Magazine

“A profound story... Keane’s gracefully restrained prose gives her characters dignity... shows how difficult forgiveness can be—and how it amounts to a kind of hard-won grace.” -- Vogue

“Keane writes with acute sensitivity and characters are consistently, authentically lived-in. . . . smartly told.” – Entertainment Weekly

"I devoured this astonishing tale of two families linked by chance, love, and tragedy. Mary Beth Keane gives us characters so complex and alive that I find myself still thinking of them days after turning the final page. A must-read." —J.

“Keane's story embraces family lives in all their muted, ordinary, yet seismic shades… offers empathy and the long view… Tender and patient, the novel avoids excessive sweetness while planting itself deep in the soil of commitment and attachment. Graceful and mature. A solidly satisfying, immersive read.” — Kirkus (starred review)

“Thoughtful, compassionate… illustrates the mutability of memory and the softening effects of time… poignantly demonstrates how grace can emerge from forgiveness.” — Publishers Weekly

“Mary Beth Keane is at the height of her powers in this novel about the sacrifices we make when we choose to build a life with someone. In Ask Again Yes , Keane tells a story about the fragility of happiness, the violence lurking beneath everyday life, and, ultimately, the power of love. If you’ve ever loved someone beyond reason, you will love this wise, tender, and beautiful book.” — Eleanor Henderson, author of Ten Thousand Saints

“Mary Beth Keane combines Joan Didion's exacting eye for detail with the emotional wallop of Alice McDermott. From the ache of first love to the recognition that the people closest to us are flawed and human, Ask Again, Yes is a moving testament to the necessary act of forgiveness. It is heartbreaking, hopeful, and honest.” —Brendan Mathews, author of The World of Tomorrow

"Beautifully observed. . . . Ask Again, Yes is a tale that will compel readers to think deeply about the ravages of unacknowledged mental illness, questions of family love and loyalty, and the arduous journey towards forgiveness.” -- BookPage, starred review

"Stunning! An absolutely brilliant, gorgeously-written novel by a fearless writer. Ask Again, Yes is both haunting and hopeful, like life itself. It's the consummate epic family story, one I can't stop thinking and talking about. A must-read for our time." --Lisa Taddeo, author of Three Women

"Her characters are flawed, thoughtful, hard-working people trying to make sense of ordinary and sometimes impossible events, and dealing with the ripple effects of the past on the present... a thought-provoking family drama and a testament to the power of forgiveness." -- Shelf Awareness
