There are many ways to calculate basic math problems and solve algebraic equations, geometric expressions, and trigonometric functions on your iPhone, but Apple just came out with one that will blow you away.

With the upcoming iOS 18 software update ( currently in beta ), you can type or write simple math problems, equations, expressions, and functions in a note, and the Notes app will solve them for you inline in real time. This is all thanks to a new feature called Math Notes, which is hosted in the Notes app but also accessible from the Calculator app.

Before iOS 18, you could manually calculate math problems using Calculator's built-in scientific calculator, but Math Notes makes it an easier, more natural process. If you have an iPad, you used to have to use Spotlight Search , Siri , or third-party calculators to do any math, but iPadOS 18 (also currently in beta ) now has Apple's official Calculator app, and Math Notes is even better when you use an Apple Pencil.

Math Notes calculates and saves mathematical results for you, making it easy to recall important information later. You can start a math note and access your history from the Notes and Calculator apps. Step 1: Open a Math Note

You can head to the Calculator or Notes app to explore everything Math Notes offers. As with most tasks, there are multiple ways to do this.

Method 1: Open a Math Note in Calculator

Open Calculator, tap the Calculator icon in the bottom left, choose "Math Notes," and then tap the New Note icon in the bottom right. If you already have math notes saved, you can select one to continue with it.

Whether you open a new or saved math note, you'll see the Calculator icon in the bottom left with the keyboard hidden, and you can use it to go back to "Basic" or "Scientific" mode. In this mode, Math Results are set to "Insert Results" immediately, so you won't have to enter an equal (=) sign when entering math problems.

Method 2: Open a Math Note in Notes

If you already have at least one official math note saved, open Notes, select the "Math Notes" folder from the parent folders directory, then tap the New Note icon at the bottom right. You can also choose a saved math note to continue with it.

Unlike in Calculator, you won't see any Calculator icon overlayed on the note. Still, Math Results are set to "Insert Results" immediately, so you won't have to enter an equal (=) sign when entering math problems.

Method 3: Open a Regular Note in Notes

If you do not already have at least one official math note saved, open Notes, then tap the New Note icon at the bottom right from the parent folders directory, within the All iCloud folder, or within the On My iPhone (or On My iPad) folder. You can also choose a saved note to continue with it.

When you open a note like this, it acts as a regular note, just as before iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Math Results are set to "Suggest Results," which means you'll have to enter an equal (=) sign to see any calculations.

As always, you can open a new regular note without opening Notes first. For example, you can:

• Ask Siri to start a new note, name it, and then tap the note's title.
• Touch and hold the Notes icon on your Home Screen, App Library, or Spotlight Search, then choose "New Note."
• Swipe open Control Center, tap the Notes control or touch and hold the Notes control and select "New Note." (You may have to add the Notes control first.)
• Search for "note" in Spotlight Search, then choose the "New Note" shortcut from the Top Hits.

Step 2: Adjust the Math Results Setting

With a math note or regular note open, you can adjust how results for mathematical problems are displayed by tapping the More (•••) button and selecting "Math Results." If you do not see "Math Results," ensure at least one character is typed in the note and try again.

• Insert Results: Automatically shows answers without having to manually enter the equal (=) sign. This is the default for notes created using Methods 1 and 2 above.
• Suggest Results: Automatically shows answers after manually typing the equal (=) sign. This is the default for notes created using Method 3 above.
• Off: Will not show answers at all.

Step 3: Enter and Edit Math Problems (Typing)

Once you have a note open, type in a math problem. For example, in the GIF below, you can see the following mathematical expression typed in both a math note and a regular note. Math Notes works with simple math problems and supports the same functions as Calculator's scientific calculator.

When set to Insert Results, you won't need to type the equal sign, but you will if set to Suggest Results. To approve the calculated inline result, tap the Enter key or the suggestion above the keyboard to accept it.

If you need to adjust the values in your math problem after accepting the result, the solution will update inline in real time.

Instead of typing to replace numbers in the expression, you can highlight the number, tap "Adjust" from the menu, and then scroll left or right on the scrollbar to decrease or increase the value. Again, Notes will update the results inline in real time.

Step 4: Enter and Edit Math Problems (Handwriting)

You can also handwrite math problems in math notes or regular notes. As explained above, Math Notes works with simple math problems and supports the same functions as Calculator's scientific calculator.

Tap the Handwriting button in the toolbar, choose the writing utensil, and write your expression out. When you draw the equal sign (=), Notes will insert the solution while matching your handwriting style. You can tap the solution to view the expression and result in typed print and select "Remove Answer" if desired.

You don't need to erase and write new numbers to adjust the values in your expression. Instead, tap a handwritten number, then scroll left or right on the scrollbar to decrease or increase its value. Notes will update the results inline in real time.

You can also use Apple Pencil on your iPad, which is much easier when handwriting than on iPhone without an Apple Pencil.

Step 5: Insert Graphs

When you write down a function, such as the following expression, where x, A, h, and g are all given values, you'll be able to insert a graph. This works for both typed and handwritten functions.

Tap the equal sign (=), then "Insert Graph," and the graph will appear nearby and be plotted correctly. You can then make it bigger or smaller and zoom it in and out until you like how it looks in your note. If you adjust any variables, the graph will re-plot itself automatically in real time.

Step 6: Convert Units

With iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, converting units has never been easier. The Notes app can now convert at least 105 currencies and 110 measurement units for angles, area, data, energy, force, fuel, length, power, pressure, speed, temperature, time, volume, and weight.

All you have to do is type or write what you want Notes to do. The process is basically the same as solving math equations. Type in or write down what you want to convert, and Notes will suggest the answer. When handwriting or set to "Suggest Results," you must add the equal (=) sign to see the suggestion.

Some words to help convert units include "as," "in," "into," and "to." For example, 5,876 NPR in CNY, 24 AU to m, 34 amin into mrad, and 985 dyn as N.

Step 7: Access Saved Math Notes

You can find all your saved math notes from the Calculator and Notes apps.

• In Calculator , tap the Calculator icon in the bottom left and choose "Math Notes." Your math notes will be listed. On iPad, you may need to unhide the sidebar to view them. Regular notes you created from the Notes app will not show up here.
• In Notes , select the "Math Notes" folder from the parent folders directory. Your math notes will be listed. On iPad, you may need to unhide the sidebar to view them. QUICKphotonics - Quick UnIt Conversion Kit for Photonics

Introduction.

QUICKphotonics (Quick UnIt Conversion Kit for Photonics) is a MATLAB-powered, commandline-style, lightweight and modular (expandable framework) tool for unit conversion in optics and photonics. It is currently a proprietary software maintained by Jiaye Wu and distributed under the MIT license .

• To use this MATLAB Toolbox App binary, MATLAB version equals or larger than R2022b (9.13) should be installed. Older versions are not tested.
• Install QUICKphotonics.mlappinstall and type QUICKphotonics or QUICK in the command window to start.
• In some cases, after restarting MATLAB, you need to manually find and click this application in the APP tab > My app on the top to (re)-enable it.

What problems/pain spots does it solve? Why would I need this tool?

The purpose of this software is to enable quick lookup of values in experiments or academic discussions.

The common conversions and calculations in optics & photonics such as "frequency difference to wavelength difference at a certain band", "photon energy", "Fresnel reflection at an angle", etc., are simple, yet :

• Writing a script function on-demand requires looking-up for the formula/constants, even verifications.
• Subsequently, your function files could become too many and non-centralized. You might not remember where to find them in a later project.
• Every time you use your old scripts, you might have to check your previous definitions (function names, units used, order of the values). If not careful enough, the results can be orders of magnitude off.

With the QUICKphotonics MATLAB Toolbox:

• You do not need to remember where you put the files. Once installed, just call the toolbox using QUICKphotonics or QUICK in the command window, or find it in your MATLAB apps tab.
• You do not need to remember the commands and deal with units. The commands are flexibly spelt with auto-recognized units , which is very intuitive to use.

Feature: introducing the flexiCommand

Introducing the flexiCommand , an intuitive and easy-to-remember type of command with auto unit-recognition and flexible element order .

A flexiCommand consists of 4~5 parts

• head : leading command head (only in some commands, energy , reflect , cav , power , etc.)
• conv_source : reserve name of the conversion source, e.g., freq
• unit_source : unit of the conversion source, e.g., THz . Units are automatically recognized.
• conv_target : 2+(reserve name of the conversion target), e.g., 2wl . Here 2 means "to".
• unit_source : unit of the conversion target, e.g., nm . Units are automatically recognized.

Except for head , the order of the rest parts does not matter in a flexiCommand . To avoid any errors caused by ambiguity, please do not use combinations like t (time) next to Hz or nm next to J .

For example, wlnm2freqTHz 1550 , nmTHzwl2freq 1550 , wl2freqTHznm 1550 are treated as the same command, and it does the same thing as wlum2freqTHz 1.550 which converts 1550 nm to frequency in THz.

• All commands are case-sensitive.
• The commands tolerate irrelevant excessive letters, as long as the elements are accurate and intact.

Simple commmands:

• For changelog: changelog
• For help and supported functions: help / functions / commands / flexiCommand / flexiCMD
• For optical constants: constants
• For author info/credits/licence/important notes: about / info / credits / license / licence
• For closing/terminating the programme: close / exit

Unit conversions & calculations

1. flexicommand <value-1>, 1.1 wavelength and frequency conversion: wl(wl_unit)2freq(freq_unit) <value>.

(wl_unit): *m (nm, um, m, etc.) see unit .

(freq_unit): *Hz (THz, GHz, Hz, etc.) see unit .

For example, convert 1550 nm to THz, the command is wlnm2freqTHz 1550 (or wlm2freqTHz 1550e-9 or in other units).

Likewise, freqTHz2wlnm 193 means convert 193 THz to nm.

1.2 Frequency and time period conversion: freq(freq_unit)2t(t_unit) <value>

(t_unit): *s (ps, ns, ms, etc.) see unit .

For example, convert 5 GHz to time in ps, the command is freqGHz2tps 5 (or freqGHz2tps 5e9 or in other units).

Likewise, tps2freqGHz 4 means convert 4 ps to GHz.

1.3 Power converstion: power(mW/dBm)2(dBm/mW) <value>

This command also support other scale of watt, and the user can replace mW to W , uW , etc.

For example, convert 3 dBm to mW, the command is powerdBm2mW 3 .

Likewise, powermW2dBm 3 means convert 3 mW to dBm.

1.4 Decibel and linear scale converstion: lin2dB <value>

For example, convert factor-4 linear scale to dB, the command is lin2dB 4 .

Likewise, dB2lin 3 means convert 3 dB to linear scale.

1.5 Photon energy and frequency/wavelength: photonfreq(freq_unit)2E(energy_unit) <freq_value> or photonwl(wl_unit)2E(energy_unit) <wl_value>

For photon energy, one can use either *J (like mJ , uJ , etc) or eV .

For back-conversion, the cammand is similar: photonfreq(freq_unit)2E(energy_unit) <freq_value> or photonwl(wl_unit)2E(energy_unit) <wl_value> .

For angular frequency, replace freq by afreq , and the units are omitted (default: rad/s)

1.6 Energy conversion between *J and eV: energyeV2(energy_unit) <value> and energy(energy_unit)2eV <value>

energyeV2J <value> converts eV to J, and energymJ2eV <value> converts mJ to eV.

2. flexiCommand <value-1> <value-2>

2.1 difference in frequency/wavelength to difference in wavelength/frequency:.

There are two scenarios.

The centre frequency/wavelength should be in the same unit as (freq_unit) or (wl_unit).

For angular frequency, only rad/s is supported. For vacuum, input n as 1.

2.3 Cavity free spectral range (FSR): cav(cavlength_unit)2freq(freq_unit) <n_cav> <length_cav> / cav(cavlength_unit)2t(period_unit) <n_cav> <length_cav>

Calculates the FSR in freqeucny/time/wavelength intervals in the selected domains and units. For vacuum, input n as 1.

2.4 Cavity length from FSR: freq(freq_unit)2cav(cavlength_unit) <n_cav> <freq> / t(period_unit)2cav(cavlength_unit) <n_cav> <t>

Calculates the cavity length from FSR.

3. flexiCommand <value-1> <value-2> <value-3>

3.1 fresnel reflection: reflectdeg <n1> <n2> <angle_deg> or reflectrad <n1> <n2> <angle_rad>.

For example reflectDEG 1.2 1.6 0 and reflectRAD 1.2 1.6 0 do the same thing.

n1 and n2 are refractive indices of the two media, angle is the incident angle. There are three outputs, <math-renderer class="js-inline-math" style="display: inline" data-static-url="https://github.githubassets.com/static" data-run-id="4f80582f25baadfb9983ba9790abb492">$R_s$</math-renderer> and <math-renderer class="js-inline-math" style="display: inline" data-static-url="https://github.githubassets.com/static" data-run-id="4f80582f25baadfb9983ba9790abb492">$R_p$</math-renderer> in two polarizations and their average <math-renderer class="js-inline-math" style="display: inline" data-static-url="https://github.githubassets.com/static" data-run-id="4f80582f25baadfb9983ba9790abb492">$R_{avg}$</math-renderer>.

reflectDEG treats incident angle in degree, and reflectRAD treats incident angle in radian.

3.2 Peak power and average power of pulsed laser. peak2pavg(intensity_unit)(temporal_unit)(reprate_unit) <P_peak> <t_pulse> <reprate> or pavg2peak(intensity_unit)(temporal_unit)(reprate_unit) <P_avg> <t_pulse> <reprate>

(intensity_unit) is optional (can be omitted) and kept consistent throughout input and output.

Temporal width in time ( *s ), repetition rate in frequency ( *Hz ).

For example, peak2pavgGWpsMHz 0.5 1 16 means the input has a peak power of 0.5 GW/unit_area, 1-ps temporal width, and 16-MHz repetition rate. If GHz is omitted, the unit will become (a.u.)/unit_area.

• frequency: *Hz (Hz to THz)
• linear energy/power: dimensionless or *W (fW to GW) or *W/cm^2 (in pulsed laser)
• logarithmic scale: dB, dBm
• photon energy: *J (fJ to GJ), eV
• wavelength/cavity length: *m (am to Gm)
