The modern day and age are riddled with a staggering amount of stress as people struggle to cope with their day to day responsibilities. These responsibilities coupled by the frailties of human emotion can in various case cause people to develop mental conditions that end up looking like too much pressure on an individual. The consistent need to provide and to try and achieve success has driven many a people to the depths of depression when their plans failed to work out. Therapy plays a key role in enabling people to reinvent themselves and overcome mental stumbling blocks. Although there are numerous therapeutic techniques used by therapist today, one of the most renown is psychoanalytic therapy. Psychoanalytic therapy has been described as a component of the psychoanalytic theory developed by Sigmund Freud which asserts that people can be cured by making conscious their unconscious thoughts and motivations and therefore gaining what appears to be insight (Holt, 1989). Psychoanalytic therapy therefore aims to initiate the release of repressed emotions and experiences, to improve the mental health of a patient (Holt, 1989). This paper therefore aims to evaluate the case study attached using Freud’s psychoanalytic theory approach in order to develop a framework for treatment and evaluation of the application of the theory in counselling.
