After two years of basic study and an intermediate examination students in the programme continue with a further two years of advanced study in which audio drama and screenplays are also covered. Graduates of the programme are awarded a university qualification equivalent to a Master´s degree. Workshops with acclaimed authors and directors as well as collaborative projects with other departments and professional theatres supplement the seminars. The programme aims to attract the greatest possible diversity and prospective students representing different cultures, generations and personalities. They are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted every two years in the autumn and require the submission of a scene written by the candidate, two texts following specific guidelines and an analysis. In recent years eight students were accepted from an average of 170 submissions.

Institute for Writing Studies (ISW)

creative writing university berlin

The Institute for Writing Studies is an interdisciplinary research institute. Its members bundle and initiate writing research and development projects on writing in the profession, at university and school, as well as on creative and literary writing in different contexts.

The aim of the Institute is to facilitate and promote research and development projects in writing studies. In this way, it makes the interdisciplinary expertise of actors from writing studies visible both in the theoretical field and in the field of practice and contributes to national and international networking.

Writing as a cultural technique is such a self-evident activity that it was initially overlooked as an object of research for a long time. Gradually, it became the focus of attention in various academic disciplines that look at writing from very different perspectives, with different questions and methodological approaches (e.g. in psychology, linguistics, educational sciences, German didactics, literary studies, translation studies, cultural studies, neurosciences, technical sciences, etc.). In parallel, a field of practice has emerged in recent decades, particularly at universities, which is dedicated to the teaching and learning writing and writing to learn, i.e. the question of how writing can be taught, supported and used as a learning medium in different subjects. Out of these two developments, a new discipline is currently forming in the German-speaking world: Germanic writing studies. "This not only examines contexts, processes, and practices of writing itself and the ideas associated with writing and learning to write in specific contexts, but it also asks what forms of support for learning to write are common there and how they can be further developed." (Girgensohn et al. 2021, 31).

The Institute for Writing Studies offers a broad framework for these developments. The research projects of the researchers associated with the Institute

● use different empirical methods and different theoretical approaches;

● are linked to discourses of different disciplines;

● examine, for example, writing processes, writing products (i.e., written texts), the learning and teaching of writing, and writing as a medium for learning and reflection;

● refer to different languages.

Possible topics for research in writing studies can be found here .

The Institute for Writing Studies was founded by

creative writing university berlin

The Pratt Berlin study abroad program offers BFA in Writing majors, creative writing minors, Critical and Visual Studies minors, and HMS minors in their sophomore or junior year a chance to spend a semester in one of Europe’s most vibrant artistic and literary cities: Berlin, Germany.

Students can take a full 16 credits of core classes and electives with BFA in Writing faculty while living and learning in Kreuzberg, one of Berlin’s most central and exciting neighborhoods.

A semester abroad allows students to broaden their cultural, intellectual, and creative horizons, and Berlin is an ideal city for such study and growth. It has a complex and rich history, and it is, like other major global cities, a dynamic and changing city, one that offers numerous opportunities for in-depth cultural exchange.

For a writer, spending a semester abroad can be a powerful experience, in that it offers you the chance to shift perspectives, learn new cultural narratives, and form more expansive world views, all of which deepen and complicate your imaginative potential. The chance to learn a new language is also a direct way to more fully understand and develop your own native language(s).

The program is housed in a newly renovated button factory, offering new dorms, classrooms, a cafe, community spaces, communal kitchens, an event space, and 24 hour security–all this in the heart of Berlin, one of the art and cultural capitals of the world. Biographical and creative writing M.A.

Learning how to write, applying this and teaching it to others..

In this study programme you will find out all about your personal writing style. You will learn the educational-didactic skills for leading writing groups and supporting individuals.

We are the first university to offer a Master’s study programme in this field for the German-speaking area. The study programme has been running since 2006 and was successfully re-accredited for the second time in 2015.

Goals and curriculum

The five-semester part-time graduate programme is for students who already hold their first academic degree. It qualifies graduates to help their clients in the fields of social work, preventative and curative health work, as well as in the fields of professional coaching, supervision, cultural work, adult education, and psychotherapy. This is the first graduate programme in this field in a German-speaking country. Our programme started in 2006, and was successfully re-accredited in 2010.

Students learn a broad range of creative methods to teach writing, and how to best employ them. It is important that students in the programme reflect on their own biography and writing style, as well as learning didactic skills to guide writing groups as well as individuals. In the field of the didactics of writing, students may develop a research project of their own, and present it in a master’s thesis.

Programme structure

The programme is structured by two basic elements: classroom instruction and Internet-based teaching and communication. In two foundational semesters, students learn the fundamentals of biographic and creative writing, and they also develop their own writing competence. During the second or third semester, these competencies are verified in a practical project, preferably in the context of students’ own professional environment.  The third and fourth semester are devoted mainly to honing didactic skills for creative or biographic writing projects and to developing students’ individual writing and working styles. The fifth semester is reserved for the writing of the M.A. thesis.

This programme is subject to tuition fees. Applications can be submitted at any time.  The language of instruction is German. For further information please switch to our  German website.

About Creative Writing

Creative Writing degrees teach ways of building stories by expressing thoughts, feelings, and emotions using the written medium, as opposed to simply presenting written facts. Future creative writers learn to use elements of fiction, character creation, and plot development. Upon graduation, you’ll have the opportunity to work as a play writer, screenwriter, journalist, or fiction writer.

Creative Writing for Academics (online)

creative writing university berlin

Before booking a workshop, please make sure that you can attend for the entire duration.

Participation

Doctoral researchers of all disciplines of the Berlin University Alliance (Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität, Technische Universität und Charité).

Sometimes, creative writing and academic writing appear to be two different things entirely. That’s partly because academic writing is often experienced as a rather dry and painstaking process the results of which are equally dry and painstaking to consume. However, there is a number of deep and very interesting connections between these two modes of writing. And in this workshop, you will have the chance to explore them. Doing so will not only be tremendous fun but also help you to reflect and develop the repertoire of techniques and styles that you apply in your academic writing.

For workshops held online, participation is allowed under the following conditions: a working camera that is turned on and a microphone to allow active participation in discussions and group work. Headphones must also be used to protect other participants from office eavesdroppers. In this context, we would also like to refer to the rules for digital courses at Freie Universität Berlin (Code of Conduct).

Course Content and Learning Objectives

The central principal of this course is that by studying the techniques of creative writing, we can vastly improve our legal writing. To that end, we’ll explore a variety of literary forms – from short story to poem, TV script to graphic novel. By learning to pay closer attention to words, sentences, and paragraphs, we will cultivate both greater facility and greater confidence with language. To become better writers, we must also become better readers, which is why we’ll divide our time between reading and writing. Course sessions will consist of readings, short craft lectures, small group discussions, writing exercises and prompts, workshops, and revisions. You should expect to read, write, and share work – and to constructively give and receive feedback. By the end of the course, you will have developed a basic understanding of narrative craft and hopefully had some fun along the way. Our primary goal will be to make your writing more precise, legible, and engaging. We’ll also develop practices for accessing and unleashing creativity and using language to think outside the box. The course will be taught mostly in English, but students may write in German or English. No previous creative writing experience is required. After a  MANDATORY INTRODUCTORY WEBEX SESSION AT 4:00PM ON APRIL 19th  (link will be sent beforehand), this course will be offered asynchronously. Note that you will be asked to coordinate with other students to complete the assigned tasks – in other words, you will  not  be able to perform  all  the assignments on your own. At the beginning of the semester,  you will divide into Writing Groups of 3-5 people; you will meet on your own time to complete the group exercises (about 50% of coursework); the other 50% of coursework you can do on your own. Please  enroll in the course on Blackboard  as soon as it opens up, usually a few days before the course begins. Note: those who do not show up to the  MANDATORY FIRST SESSION ON WEBEX  will be deregistered from the course unless they write me at  [email protected]   by APRIL 17th  with a valid reason for not appearing.

Restricted Enrollment

Below is a list of best universities in Europe ranked based on their research performance in Creative Writing. A graph of 1.17M citations received by 136K academic papers made by 486 universities in Europe was used to calculate publications' ratings, which then were adjusted for release dates and added to final scores.

We don't distinguish between undergraduate and graduate programs nor do we adjust for current majors offered. You can find information about granted degrees on a university page but always double-check with the university website.

Please note that our approach to subject rankings is based on scientific outputs and heavily biased on art-related topics towards institutions with computer science research profiles.

Creative Writing

Writers as artists, writers in the world.

Creativity, Clarity, Community

Oberlin offers undergraduates the rare opportunity to major in creative writing—not as a concentration in another department, but as an independent discipline in its own right. Creative Writing provides an intense and rigorous course of study with instruction, studio training, and coursework in a variety of genres, including poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, translation, screenwriting, and hybrid forms. Our program encourages work across disciplines and prepares students for a range of careers both within and beyond the literary world.

An Inclusive and Imaginative Workshop Culture

Creative Writing at Oberlin emphasizes an inclusive workshop climate where creative expression, experimentation, and collaboration thrive. Our faculty are practicing poets, novelists, screenwriters, and essayists who value the art of teaching and supportive mentorship. Advanced creative writing students pursue large-scale independent projects with the support of a faculty mentor and a dedicated small group of peers. Because we are more than just a studio program, our students employ the skills of open inquiry and intellectual curiosity: their liberal arts education enriches their creative work, and their creativity inspires rigorous cross-disciplinary thinking both in the classroom and beyond.

Writers in the Community

In Oberlin Writers in the Schools (WITS), students learn how to take their passion for writing into the local schools in meaningful and effective ways.

Distinguished Visitors

Students have the opportunity to connect with diverse visiting writers, including notable alumni, through campus readings, master classes, craft workshops, and individual consultations.

Featured Courses

Word & image: poetry in dialogue with visual art.

Join in the dynamic conversation between poetry and visual art and explore how visual art can inspire and challenge the making of poetic image and meaning.  Through collaboration with the Allen Memorial Art Museum, students have the opportunity for close-looking at superb and diverse works of art across many cultures and centuries.

Race and Poetic Innovation

Explore the dynamic relationship between racial identity and creative inventiveness in poetry. Delve into contemporary and classic poems that broaden and challenge notions of race and representation. Experiment with using craft and technique to subvert conventional understandings of identity and racialized experience.

Plot & Structure

In this course, cross-listed with Comparative Literature, students read experimental contemporary fiction from around the world. Students gain an understanding of the historical basis of Western narrative structure, while simultaneously considering alternate models and learning to question established rules about managing plot and action. Students respond to texts both critically and creatively, with the goal of structuring their own narratives more boldly.

False Documents

A false document is “a technique employed to create verisimilitude in a work of fiction.” This can take many forms, such as epistolary novels, or fictions in the form of annotated poems, online reviews, author acknowledgments, wills, indexes, email threads, and beyond. How do we perceive verisimilitude as readers? How do we, as writers, fake it? In addition to examining literary false documents (and hoaxes and frauds), students will write a number of short fictions over the course of the semester.

Student Profiles

Paige reinstein ’21.

“In this tight-knit community we get to see each other grow (as both people and writers) from introductory courses as awkward first-years to capstone senior year. The faculty and students are some of the most supportive people in my life, and I love learning with them.”

Paige Reinstein

Fiona Warnick ’22

“I feel so consistently lucky to have such dedicated professors. Everyone I’ve worked with in the Creative Writing Program cares deeply about their students both as writers and as people. Classes are small, so you’re able to actually know and trust each other, which is important for productive workshopping.”

Fiona Warnick

Khalid McCalla ’21

“From the professors to the students, everyone always wanted to see me and my writing grow and develop, but not at the expense of what made my voice unique. It's a warm and supportive community that only gets better the longer you're a part of it.”

Khalid McCalla

Creative Writing MFA Alumni Spotlight: Madison McCartha ('18)

Published: May 30, 2024

Author: Paul Cunningham

Madison McCartha

"Coming closer we might find that Solaris isn't a planet at all, but a fugitive surface—a 'fictive copy' illegible as a speculative ecological fiction alone. I consider instead that this complex of readings, and maybe Solaris itself, form an assemblage, and a model for Black artistic expression—an expression that sees a connection between the treatment of politically marginalized bodies, and of the nonhuman world; because the ways we ask our technology and our environment to labor, and to mediate the violent apparatuses of the state that pass through them, that use them, is connected to the ways we ask politically marginalized bodies to labor and to mediate, perhaps like Solaris , the violences they are made to be complicit with." — from Madison McCartha's "Notes toward a Virtual Poetics: An Essay on Solaris, Assemblage, and Blackness"

Madison McCartha is a poet, critic, and multimedia artist whose debut book of poetry and visual art, Freakophone World , was published by Inside the Castle in 2021. McCartha's writing appears in Black Warrior Review , BOMB , Denver Quarterly , jubilat , The Spectacle , and elsewhere. Their work has been exhibited through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Center, the Poetic Research Bureau, and digitally through Small Press Traffic. Shortlisted for the 2019-2021 CAAPP Creative Writing Fellowship, they have received support from The Electronic Literature Organization, Blue Mountain Center, Millay Arts, Winter Tangerine, and the Ucross Foundation.

John Keene (the MacArthur winning author of  Counternarratives ) has called McCartha's debut a "marvel of continuous lyric transformation." Douglas Kearney (author of  Sho ) describes McCartha's poetic voice as "assured, inventive, irradiated," likening the speaker to a "chimera of grievance, sensuality, insight, and orneriness chucking the shit-talk of those who’ve been below long enough to know what’s been sown, where everything is buried." In a review of Freakophone World , Oliva Cronk and Philip Sorenson write:

"McCartha has written an erotics of bodies smashing together, of words colliding. These are not only “human” bodies. In fact, not human at all: this is about uncanny bio-flotillas, cadavers, trash, and technology: about getting outside of oneself, while still keeping one’s ability to speak: a talking wall, a grub, a slime mold, some kind of free-floating memory, or (possibly most especially) virtual reality. All of this, too, is predicated on and happening in ecological catastrophe: this is the erotics of collapsing ecosystems and the rise of squid-ruled seas." — from Oliva Cronk and Philip Sorenson's "Madison MCartha's Freakophone World" ( Tarpaulin Sky)

Madison McCartha painting

Remarking on the visual aspects of the book, Asiya Wadud (author of  No Knowledge Is Complete Until It Passes Through My Body ) writes, “In the paintings inside Freakophone World , there are moments where we enter a whole wilderness of longing, where McCartha invites us to reconsider the empirical limits of scale, scope and containment.” In their own words, McCartha compares the paintings of Freakophone World to "virtual diorama[s]" influenced by 70s sci-fi films and Detroit House music.  One can read excerpts from Freakophone World as well as view McCartha's own kinetic films by visiting their website .

McCartha's second book, The Cryptodrone Sequence , is forthcoming from Black Ocean in 2025. They describe the book as a "simulation glitch, a cypher, a queer assemblage diary with a cutup persona—much like Kathy Acker’s Janey Smith from Blood and Guts in High School —an anarcho-punk-bot-tremor using as its source material a technical handbook on Computer Security Basics (circa 2002), as well as some chewed-up texts from Jean Genet, Édouard Glissant, Clarice Lispector, and others who together constitute this poetic intervention."

As a contributor to the Action Books Blog , McCartha has interviewed authors like Anaïs Duplan and Will Alexander . Their "Notes toward a Virtual Poetics" blog series was eventually published as a peer-reviewed essay by Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience in 2022.

McCartha holds an MFA from the University of Notre Dame. As a PhD Candidate at the University of California, Santa Cruz, they investigate the ways media art and electronic literature might tell us something new about boundaries, permission, and race.
