Designing blockchain-based applications a case study for imported product traceability

Blockchain technology enables decentralization as new forms of distributed software architectures, where components can reach agreements on the shared system states without trusting on a central integration point. Since blockchain is an emerging technology which is still at an early stage of development, there is limited experience on applying blockchain to real-world software applications. We applied blockchain application design approaches proposed in software architecture community in a real-world project called originChain, which is a blockchain-based traceability system that restructures the current system by replacing the central database with blockchain. In this paper, we share our experience of building originChain. By using blockchain and designing towards security, originChain provides transparent tamper-proof traceability data with high availability and enables automated regulatory-compliance checking and adaptation in product traceability scenarios. We also demonstrate both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the software architecture of originChain. Based on our experience and analysis, we found that the structural design of smart contracts has large impact on the quality of the system.

Aiming at the centralization problem of the traditional medical device traceability system. This paper proposes a medical device traceability system based on blockchain technology. By integrating the traditional tracing system with the blockchain technology, based on the decentralization and non-tamperability of the blockchain, the alliance chain and the smart contract construction system are adopted. Manufacturers, distributors, hospitals and consumers in the system can access product information and trace the entire circulation process of the product through RFID. In addition, consumers do not need to register an account number, but directly through the RFID query products related to the main information, such as the shelf life, production enterprises, production time, product price, etc. This system solves the problem that the traditional system is vulnerable to network attack due to centralization, which can improve the robustness of the system, enhance the reliability of data and realizes the traceability of the production, sales and use of medical devices. Therefore, it ensures that the source of medical devices can be traced, the flow can be tracked, the information can be inquired and the responsibility can be investigated to ensure the public consumption safety.

Blockchain traceability system can address the problem of information asymmetry, thereby influencing consumer purchasing decisions. However, its efficacy within the context of e-commerce platforms remains unclear. To address this issue, we analyzed the impact of blockchain traceability on product sales based on cue utilization theory and using a quasi-natural experiment on the JD Mall e-commerce platform. Empirical analyses show that blockchain traceability information not only promotes product sales growth, but also alleviates consumers’ reliance on electronic word-of-mouth. In addition, products with lower brand reputation benefit more from implementing blockchain traceability information. The findings of this study help retailers recognise the potential and application conditions of blockchain traceability information, and provide management insights for e-commerce platforms to adopt blockchain traceability systems.
