References for diagnostic manuals follow the format for books , and references for entries in diagnostic manuals follow the format for edited book chapters .
1. Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM )

- Because the author and the publisher are the same, “American Psychiatric Association” is written only in the author element.
- Provide a DOI when the diagnostic manual has one.
- For editions of the DSM without DOIs, the reference ends after the title because the author and publisher are the same and thus the publisher is omitted to avoid repetition.

- Because the author and the publisher are the same, “World Health Organization” is written only in the author element to avoid repetition.
- Because the ICD is available online and does not have a DOI, provide a URL.

- To cite a chapter in the DSM-5, use the following basic format in your reference list:

For example:
American Psychiatric Association. (2022). Bipolar and related disorders. In Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (5th ed., text rev.). https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.books.9780890425787.x03_Bipolar_and_Related_Disorders
To cite the print version of the DSM-5 in the APA format, the citation ends after the edition. For example:
American Psychiatric Association. (2022). Neurodevelopmental disorders. In Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (5th ed., text rev.).
In-text citations
- Abbreviations for group authors are not required in the APA style but may be used if the abbreviation is common or the group author is mentioned more than three times. The first time you name the American Psychiatric Association in your paper, spell the whole name out. Afterwards, you can use the abbreviation "APA."
First in-text citation, narrative form:
The American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2022) found depression to be a growing problem in adolescents.
First in-text citation, paraphrase in parenthetical form :
Depression is a growing problem in adolescents (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022).
First in-text citation, direct quote :
