More than just a photo book maker, Canva lets you edit your photos and share your design with a team of collaborators. 

Some templates and features are only available with a paid Canva Pro account. 

For full creative freedom, choose Canva. Decide on a landscape or square book, then choose a hard or softcover. Next, browse thousands of templates (including a category dedicated to travel) and upload images from your phone, tablet, or desktop. All templates are fully customizable, which means you can change the font, the colors, and add icons and graphics. You can also edit your photos as you go with options to crop and rotate, adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation, and enhance with different filters and frames. 

All layouts can be adjusted to suit the number of photos you want on each page. If you upgrade to Canva Pro, you can remove backgrounds with a single click (kind of like cutting and pasting elements of real photos for a traditional scrapbook.) Canva autosaves as you go and creates an editing link that you can share to ask for input from friends and family. Recycled packaging and free standard shipping round out this company’s benefits.

Best for Simple Designs

Chatbooks is affordable and easy to use with the option to subscribe for repeat orders. 

Customization options are limited.  

If your photo book goals are a little less ambitious, opt for stackable, collectible designs from Chatbooks. The company’s classic photo books offer high quality printing at a price tag that’s reasonable enough to justify regular creations (if you like, you can even sign up for a monthly subscription.) How do they do this? By keeping things simple. You won’t find fancy templates or colored backgrounds, or an endless array of customizable graphics and fonts.

Instead, upload photos from your desktop or phone. Then, decide how many you want to appear on each page. If the answer is just one, choose whether you want it to cover the full page or have a white border around it. You can leave the layout text-free or add a simple location tag and/or caption. Other design choices include the book’s size, whether it has a hard or softcover, the color of the spine, and the cover. Best for Fast Printing

Walmart photo.

Walmart lets you design, order, and collect your photo book in-store, all on the same day. 

Most photo books must be no more than 40 pages to be eligible for same-day pickup. 

Walmart offers a solution for anyone who’s designing a photo book on a deadline, with more than 80 layouts that can be created online and then picked up in-store on the same day. You can choose from a variety of square and rectangular sizes in several different styles including softcover, matte and glossy hardcover; layflat; and premium layflat (with extra thick pages and a matte finish). Alternatively, upgrade to a linen or leather cover, or opt for a die-cut style that showcases your favorite image through a window. 

There are many themed templates to choose from, though most of them are fairly basic (don’t expect Canva-level creative flair.) Most templates include 20 pages with the option to buy more, but be aware that there’s usually a 40-page limit if you want to pick your book up the same day. If you have a little more time to work with and want extra pages, you can also opt for home delivery with free shipping on orders over $35.

Best Coffee Table Books

Once upon photo books.

Once Upon focuses on simple layouts that can be shared with and edited by multiple people. 

Designs may be a little too basic for fans of complex templates and embellishments. 

Once Upon offers three options for simple yet visually striking coffee table books. These include large and medium hardcover photo books with a sturdy build and a title of your choice printed on the spine, and medium softcover books for a flexible, lightweight feel that’s reminiscent of a luxury magazine. From their wipeable pages to their easy-turn binding, board books from Pinhole Press are designed especially with little kids in mind. 

The number of included pages varies from one template to the next, and not all templates allow you to add more. 

If you love the idea of making a photo book for the baby or toddler in your life but want it to last more than a few hours, check out Pinhole Press. Their board books are made especially for little people with rigid, high-gloss pages that can be wiped clean of errant crumbs or juice drops. Buzz Books are cost-effective and require minimal storage space, making them the perfect collector’s item.

Beyond choosing which photo appears on each page, customization options are very limited. 

Nations Photo Lab offers a full range of photo book products including templates for everything from travel to weddings and boudoir photography. Depending which one you choose, you can customize the binding, cover material, page thickness, and more. We particularly like their Buzz Books for those in search of something simple. At 6 x 6 inches, they’re both small enough and affordable enough to justify purchasing one for every trip. 

There are more than 120 pre-designed, soft-touch covers to choose from (you can also create your own) but the inside of each Buzz Book is the same: 40 pages, with one photo per page. The photos are printed on professional-quality Mohawk Matte paper against a white background for full visual effect. There are multiple shipping options available, including USPS First Class which delivers in two to six business days.

Heirloom lets you add up to one hour of video to a physical book that plays original audio with crystal clear quality. 

Video books can show vertical or horizontal footage, but not both. 

For a slightly different approach to preserving your travel memories, consider Heirloom which adds your videos to a physical book so that they can be looked at and enjoyed over and over again. Each book includes a five-inch HD screen. You can choose for yours to be oriented horizontally or vertically (more appropriate for those that typically shoot footage on their phone.) There are three options: up to 10 minutes, 20 minutes, or one hour. 

Here’s how it works: purchase your video book online, then receive an email with instructions on how to add video using the online builder. Your book will then be created and mailed to you. You don’t have to limit yourself to video. The books can also display photos as a slideshow and even mix photos and videos together. Add a personal message. Then, choose from 16 premade covers or pay extra for a custom cover printed with your own design. All video books include a charger and expedited delivery is a possibility.

Tips for Choosing a Photo Book Website

Be turnaround time.

If you need your photo book in a hurry, make sure to take production and delivery times into consideration when choosing which company to use. A handful — usually more budget-friendly ones — offer same-day production and the option to collect in-store, which is ideal for last-minute gifts. Others take several days to produce your book, but then offer expedited or rushed shipping to cut delivery time down to a minimum. Others can take two or more weeks to deliver. Check product descriptions carefully, since turnaround times can differ within the same company depending on the size and complexity of the photo book you choose. 

Look closely at the templates offered

Think about your desired photo book aesthetic and then look for a company with templates to match. These can vary from the simplistic (your photos and perhaps some text on a plain white background) to the complex (different background colors and designs, optional filters and frames, the ability to create collages and add text bubbles or other graphics.) Some companies offer templates that have been pre-designed to suit a specific theme, whether that’s travel in general or a Disney trip, tropical cruise, or camping adventure. 

Prioritize ease of use

If you have a background in design or count scrapbooking among your hobbies, you may relish in the challenge of building a photo book from scratch. But if you’re pressed for time or simply don’t want to spend hours choosing which photos go where and how to make them look their best, look for a photo book maker that does the hard work for you. This can either be through an autofill service that arranges your photos on the page (usually, you can tweak this afterwards) or through a collaboration over email or live chat with one of the company’s in-house designers. The latter service often costs extra but sometimes, as with Shutterfly, is offered free of charge. 

Image quality is key

The most important thing when making a photo book is ensuring that the photos look as good as possible. This means choosing a professional, well-reviewed company that uses quality paper and printing methods. It also means submitting photos that are good quality. Most photo book companies will have guidelines for optimum image size and resolution, and others will come up with a warning message if the image you’ve selected is not of a sufficiently high quality. You can usually choose to use it anyway, but be prepared for it to look a little grainy or pixelated. Top tip: use your lowest resolution photos for the smallest spaces on collage pages. 

Yes, most photo book makers can be used on your tablet or smartphone, either via a mobile-friendly website or with a special app. Just bear in mind that complicated layouts or photo books with lots of collage pages are often much easier to view and organize on a larger screen. 

The cost of a photo book varies hugely from under $20 to over $200. The price depends on which company you use but also on the size of the photo book, how many pages you want, and the materials you choose. Most templates include some pages in their starting price (20-25 on average), with a per-page fee for longer books. Softcover books are typically the cheapest, followed by hardcover and then linen and leather options. Traditional binding is cheaper than layflat, but layflat looks much better if you’re planning on having photos extend across a double page spread. Other factors that could increase cost include custom covers, premium paper finishes, design assistance, and expedited shipping. 

You want to find a company that prints photos that look as close as possible to the original, whether it was taken on a professional DSLR camera or downloaded from Facebook or Instagram. Images shouldn’t look grainy, blurry, or over- or undersaturated. Choose a photo book maker that uses professional printers and high-quality paper, and be sure to check customer reviews for the best insight into the kind of results you can expect. Don’t forget, though, pictures can only ever look as good as they were to begin with. So choose the crispest, best resolution images you have and use a light hand when editing them for a natural look.

How do I create a photo book online?

You can create a custom photo book online via the MILK website. Our innovative Design Studio is available to use on desktop, tablet and mobile devices, allowing you to create anywhere and at any time. You can also alternate between platforms meaning you can start your project on your desktop, edit it later on tablet and then checkout on mobile. No progress will be lost! Simply hop online, enter the Design Studio , upload your digital photos and get creating. There's no need to download an app to your device, you can just start creating immediately via your browser. All you do need to do is register an account with us. We make it easy with the option to sign up via Facebook, Google or Email. Once you have an account with us you can save your project and continue to edit it at your convenience. We believe our design studio is intuitive and easy to use but if you find there’s something you can’t quite get the hang of, we recommend watching our helpful videos or searching our Knowledge Base . If you still can’t quite figure it out, our helpful support team are available via phone, email or live chat. You can also create online via the MILK Books Photo Extension for Apple Photos . Can you create photo books on iPad or iPhone?

While we don’t have a specific app for iOS, you can create photo books on your iPhone or iPad or any mobile or tablet device for that matter. Simply access the MILK Design Studio online via the browser and start creating. Not only can you create on tablet and mobile but you can checkout too. For best results we recommend the Safari or Google Chrome web browser. See our helpful video for tips on how to create photo books on your tablet or mobile .

How do I make a photo book on Mac?

To create a photo book on Mac, simply download the free MILK Books project extension for Photos through the Mac App Store . Our extension allows you to create and design your project with ease directly within the Photos app. Edit your photos with Apple design tools like red eye reduction, image rotation and more; navigate with Apple gestures, and when it's time to check out, use your one-touch Apple ID to sign in and purchase. As of yet, our Canvas Prints are not available to create via our Mac extension, but keep an eye out for updates.

How many photos can you include in a photo book?

In the MILK Design Studio, you'll find a large selection of image templates with the maximum number of images per page being 12 (i.e. 24 per spread). The total number of photos you can put in a photo book will depend on the number of pages you select. Theoretically, you could include 1000s of photos if you were to go with our max page count of 200 and the max amount of images per page. Should I put a picture on the cover of my photo book?

Mixbook photo book: Two-minute review

If you want a slick and seamless process, then Mixbook is a great option and is one of the best photo books available in the US and UK. There are loads of different designs to choose from, handily split into separate categories (including Weddings, Pets, Adoption, Travel, and more). 

I enjoyed scrolling through the wide variety of designs, which included anything from stylish minimalism to more wacky, colorful designs. Usefully, when you hover over each design, you get a preview of what’s inside the book. When you select a design to use, you can then easily choose between landscape, square, and portrait orientations at the top of the page. 

While most aspects of Mixbook’s service are pretty effortless, I did find its pricing a little confusing. With constant discounts available, Mixbook’s ordinary pricing becomes fairly arbitrary and meaningless. The base price for an 11 x 8.5” landscape book is $49.99 / £41.94, but was only $33.49 / £29.36 at the time of writing – obviously, this is ostensibly a great discount, but I’ve never actually seen a Mixbook photo book available at full price! 

One of the most likely areas for a potential hiccup when building a photo book is when it comes time to upload photos. This is because the builder has to sift through and process a large amount of images. However, Mixbook’s image uploader was pleasantly hiccup-free. 

You can add photos from your phone or desktop, or you can import them from Facebook, Instagram, Google Photos, or Smugmug. I uploaded my images from my desktop, which did take a little while but it wasn’t overly painful. One of my favorite aspects of Mixbook is that you’re able to start putting your photo book together as soon as the first photo uploads, which is a great timesaver. 

I found dragging and dropping the photos to be nice and easy. Each page is customizable, with different templates to explore. You can also move either the frame of the photo or enlarge and adjust the photo itself, which means you can get the perfect framing for each image. 

I did have a few glitchy moments where photos didn’t show up properly for a few seconds, but these weren’t overly disruptive to the process as a whole. I particularly liked a feature where you can copy and paste a page design elsewhere into the book, which is another great potential timesaver. 

When I was done with building my photo book, I used the handy Preview function to double-check for mistakes. I found the payment process to be just as seamless as every other part of Mixbook’s service, with options to pay via card, gift card or PayPal. 

After paying, Mixbook gives you the option to email your fully designed book to other people so that they can order it for themselves. I love this feature and can see it being really useful for those creating photo books for weddings, new babies, and other big life events. 

My Mixbook photo book came promptly and in suitably sturdy cardboard packaging. There wasn’t any scuffing or damage to the photo book and there weren’t any printing errors either.  I found the photos to be pretty true to color, albeit a little bit less vibrant than I would have liked. 

When inspected up close (as in, within 25cm of the page), the images are slightly fuzzy – especially the darker photos. However, you wouldn’t notice this at a normal viewing distance.

Snapfish is a very competitive option for photobook fans due to its large variety of great designs and materials to choose from. It also has a slightly tricky photo book builder, but compensates with wonderfully low prices.

You might not get the bells and whistles of other photo book services, but Mimeo is pleasantly reliable.  It's got a better user experience than other photobooks, too.

How I tested the Mixbook photo book

• I built a photo book on Mixbook’s website using my own photos
• I standardized the tests across different websites by choosing products at a similar price point with similar designs and features. 

In my testing process, I used Mixbook’s website and photo book builder to create a photo book with my own photographs. As I was testing multiple photo books at the same time, I made sure to choose books that were at a similar price point so that I could test how much value for money each product gave. I also chose similar designs, shapes, and sizes and used the same batch of photos for each test. 

I compared each book side by side to check for image quality and any color variations. I also inspected the covers and pages of each book to ensure that there were no scuffs, creases, or scratches

How to create a photo book with Mixbook — cherish your memories outside of your iPhone's camera roll

M any of us no longer print out photos, or do so only rarely. Printing individual photos and placing them in an album is one way to go, but photo books are a fresher and cleaner-looking option. Creating a photo book can be a bit intimidating, but the range of customization options is nearly endless, and the result is something to be treasured. I’ve created dozens of these photo books using my iPhone over the years. If you spend time with them, you can tell a story with the photos.

Of course, you can also tell the story with words, adding captions and text boxes along the way. Personalize the books even further with book themes, stickers, colorful backgrounds, and more. I’m here to get you started and help you unleash your own creativity. As you go, remember that everything you do can be un-done with a tap, so there’s no need to worry about making a mistake. Just remember to check everything carefully before ordering! Here's how to create your very own photo book with photos from your iPhone's camera roll.

Choose your platform

First, choose which platform you’d like to use. You’ve got lots of options for making and printing a photo book online , but I’m using Mixbook as an example in this article. Since I reviewed the platform, Mixbook has updated it with AI tools to make the process easier. As always, the resulting books themselves are gorgeous. The overall process will be roughly the same for any company’s platform you choose to use. 

Mobile device or computer?

Decide if you want to create the photo book entirely on your iPhone, your iPad, or Mac. If you want to do it the quickest way possible, i.e. letting AI do most of the work for you, your iPhone will work just fine. If you prefer to place your photos by hand and do more detailed work, then I’d recommend using your Mac. Frankly, the tools are just as good on mobile, but I prefer the larger screen real estate of Mac just so I can see what I’m doing more easily.

On your iPhone or iPad

If you’re using your mobile device: download the Mixbook app from the App Store . From here, select Photo Books and follow the prompts on the screen. Once you’ve selected the size and style of book you want, you’ll upload your photos. Not only can you choose photos from your iPhone’s Photo app, but you can also upload them from Google Photos, Facebook, Instagram, or Smugmug. You can easily add more photos later, so don’t worry too much about this step. Now, it’s time to get creative. 

Auto-Create using AI

If creativity’s not your strong suit, you can simply tap Auto-Create , and the app will make your book for you from the photos you’ve chosen. I’ve played around with this feature, and I’ve found that if you’re doing a short book without a ton of photos, the AI does a good job with this. However, if you’re doing a more complex book and want to put a lot of photos on each page, you’ll probably want to place the photos by hand in order to tell the story your way. Try the Auto-Create; if you don’t like the result at all, you can undo it with a tap and create your book on your own one page at a time.

If you like how the AI has auto-created your book, you can give it a good once-over and place your order. If you like the basic idea but you want to make some tweaks, just tap on a page for more options. You’ll see options, like photos, layouts, backgrounds, stickers, text, and themes. Mixbook’s AI tools include a caption generator; you can choose from the suggested captions or create your own. 

You can always toggle off the Auto Layout switch to have more control over photo placement, and you can also change the book’s theme at any time without losing your progress. 

On your Mac

As I’ve mentioned, I prefer creating photo books on a computer simply because it’s easier to see your progress. The process is actually the same as it would be on your mobile device. There are a few small differences, such as the ability to drag and drop photos from your desktop. Otherwise, it’s just a larger canvas.

Check your work carefully

Go over your photo book with a fine-toothed comb. Make sure the photos are placed the way you want them, cropped correctly, and looking good. If you’ve written captions or text boxes, then check them carefully for typos. It wouldn’t hurt to get a second pair of eyes on it before you order; you can even share it digitally if you want someone to collaborate on the project with you.

Poetry, Photo Book Aims to Make the World a Bit Better

WINDSOR, Ohio – Rebecca Nieminen uses her poems and photographs to inspire readers in her new book, “Searching for Ascension.”

One event that inspired millions of people caused a slight delay in publishing the book.

Nieminen, of Kinsman, was putting the final touches on “Searching” last month. But after a photograph she took of the April 8 solar eclipse became a viral hit, she decided to add it to the book.

The photograph shows the eclipsed sun hanging over a statue of an angel on a tombstone in a Windsor, Ohio, cemetery. Nieminen received hundreds of orders for prints of the photo from people in several states.

The photo has a haunting quality at first glance but is strangely uplifting. Unlike traditional eclipse photos, it puts the celestial event into a larger context and humanizes it.

“I think people are responding to it because they experienced an eclipse for the first time [on April 8] and didn’t realize how special it was going to be,” Nieminen said. “It was an unforgettable feeling, and people are attracted to that image because they want to preserve how it made them feel.”

Orders started pouring in after she posted it on her business Facebook page. “There was an immediate reaction to it, lots of shares,” she said. “Then Lake Erie Living magazine shared it, and it went crazy. I had people reaching out from California and Canada.”

She was going over the page proofs for her book at the time and decided to halt work and add the photo and a poem, which she has titled “Totality.”

In a post on her Facebook business page , Nieminen shares the story of how she selected the eclipse photo site, and an amazing series of coincidences that arose from it.

“Searching for Ascension” is Nieminen’s first book of photos. Her previous work includes a historical fiction novel, “The Dance of the White Deer” (2022).

The title of the new book refers to the act of rising to a higher level, she explained.

“The poems are about the world we are living in and wanting a kinder, more enlightened world,” Nieminen said. “Some deal with damage to the planet, materialism, division, the issues we’re dealing with. It’s my way of trying to make a positive difference. I want to encourage people to think about what they can do to make the world better.”

The poems are also about relationships and age-old concerns of the human condition, such as death and the fleeting nature of life. 

The book ends with the eclipse photo and its accompanying poem.

“One reason I thought the eclipse was special is because people really felt united,” she said. “Everyone was excited for it, focused on it, and looking up at it. It was a reminder that we’re all together here on this Earth. There was a bit of a shift in how people felt about each other [during the eclipse], and I decided it was a perfect way to end the book.”

The 10-inch-by-10-inch soft cover book has 69 photos and 21 poems. It costs $45.26 and can be ordered HERE .

“It is the result of many long hours of work – years of photo-taking, years of poetry-writing,” Nieminen said. “I am hopeful it is the first of many such books. I have a lot of material to work with.”
