Nickelodeon Selects 10 Participants For 2022 Writing and Artist Program

Nickelodeon has identified 10 participants for its annual Writing and Artist Programs, designed to develop the next generation of creative voices from underrepresented communities. Helmed by the ViacomCBS Office of Global Inclusion and aligned with the company’s Content for Change initiative, for its 22nd annual Writing Program, four aspiring television writers will have the opportunity to hone their skills while working at the Nickelodeon studio and six emerging artists will develop their craft during the 10th annual Artist Program.

The news comes on the heels of the second year of remote programming, which marked the most successful year ever for Nickelodeon’s Creative Talent Development & Outreach team. All five artists from the 2021 Artist Program were staffed on Nickelodeon productions and all four writers were staffed on projects across ViacomCBS.

This year’s addition of Peer Mentoring strengthens the program’s overall impact, providing participants with invaluable one-on-one mentorship, as well as a deeper introduction to Nickelodeon’s culture and inclusive work environment.

Within the Writing Program, all participants have the opportunity to network with executives and show creators, gain firsthand experience writing scripts, pitch story ideas, and attend workshops, seminars, classes and experience working writers’ rooms. These writers will develop their skills with hands-on work during the yearlong program.

The writers will be individually paired with Nickelodeon’s Linda Halder (Senior Manager, Live Action Development), Mary Harrington (Executive Producer, Preschool Development), and Conrad Montgomery (VP, Animation Development), who will work with them on professional development, writing and network building at the studio.

The Writing Program participants are :

• Kobie Scott : Born and raised in the Big Peach State of Georgia, Kobie Scott was always connected to animation. He was accepted into Georgia Southern University, planning to be a staff writer in the video game industry, but quickly realized TV writing was more his speed. He bought books about scriptwriting and story structure, and took animation classes that gave him a greater understanding of the art form and possibly carpal tunnel.

• Lauren Monroe: Lauren Monroe (she/her) is a fat, queer, neurodiverse writer who grew up in Atlanta with a nerdy mom who cosplayed at conventions, taught high school English, and instilled a love of fantasy storytelling. Now Monroe happily writes colorful fantasy worlds for kids with queerness and nuanced perspectives of diverse bodies and brains.

• Hannah Suria : Hannah Suria is a writer and performer from Orange County, Calif. and the proud daughter of immigrants (a mixed mom from Singapore and a Tamil-Sri Lankan father from Malaysia). Writing stopped being a hobby and became an integral part of her life when, as an aspiring actor, Suria quickly discovered roles for women who look like her were few and far between.

• Frank Paiva: Frank Paiva (he/they) is a gay and queer person of size from Seattle. Growing up in the early 2000s, they struggled to find a blueprint for the rest of their life in popular media. Newly based in Los Angeles, Paiva writes comedies with heart, with a particular interest in LGBTQ history and expanding the range of body types audiences see onscreen.

During the six-month Artist Program, aspiring artists will learn from lead artists and practice their craft as they work on an animated series in various stages of production. The Artist Program tracks include storyboard, general design or CG generalist. The CG track was first offered last year to service many of the Nickelodeon Animation Studio’s current and upcoming CG productions.

The artists are paired with artistic mentors at Nickelodeon to guide their production experience, including: Ashley Kliment (Art Director, The Loud House); Jeff Chozon (Art Director, Transformers) and Jermaine Jose (Art Director, Transformers); Kimberly Mills (Storyboard Director, Big Nate) and Vypac Voeur (Lead CG Generalist, Big Nate); Chris Graham (Supervising Director, Santiago of the Seas); and Sica Von Medicus (CG Supervisor, Max & The Midknights).

The Artist Program participants are :

• Cherrie Wang (Storyboard Track): Cherrie Wang has spent her entire life doodling on anything she could get her hands on. Her family didn’t understand the world of art and animation, so Wang attended the University of Southern California where she earned her degree in Computer Science and Engineering. She taught herself how to storyboard via the internet and recently moved back to Los Angeles to pursue her calling full-time.

• Katarina Perez (CG Track): Katarina Perez is a Mexican-American artist born and raised in Houston, Texas. When introduced to a 3D animation course in high school, she was enamored by all that you could do in a 3-dimensional space. This propelled her to pack up and move to Dallas to pursue a Bachelor of Animation at the University of Texas at Dallas.

• Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist Track): Born in the Greater Los Angeles area to immigrant parents from El Salvador, Roger Hernandez’s parents were always a pillar of support and despite limited resources, they got him through college where he pursued his dream in CG animation at Cal State Northridge. Though truly a CG generalist, his primary focus is CG modeling. Sculpting 3D models is his passion and it is his goal to share his vision and talent through his art.

• Emily Monjaraz (General Design Track): Emily Monjaraz started her career illustrating kids’ books and doing graphic design for toy companies that encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM. Her mission is to create content for children learning how to harness their differences into super-powers as well as create stories and characters that represent the world in which she grew up.

• Booker Jackson (Storyboard Track): Booker Jackson is from Sacramento, Calif. and was captivated by animation from a young age after seeing a fun Nickelodeon behind the scenes segment about a day in the life of a story artist. Jackson is passionate about diversifying the world of animation and mentoring those who will come after him.

• David Lu (General Design Track): David Lu hails from Vancouver, Canada, where he spent his formative years watching a variety of cartoons that influenced him into becoming an artist. Convinced by his family that art was not a feasible career, Lu went to the Bay Area to write code in exchange for cold hard cash. However, Lu’s artistic desires were not satisfied, so for the past couple of years he has been focused on building his portfolio to break into the animation industry and live his childhood dream of creating cartoons.

Alumni of the programs who have gone on to hold positions on Nickelodeon shows include May Chan (co-executive producer, The Astronauts), Sarah Jacques (Art Director, Santiago of the Seas), Anna Hill (storyboard artist, The Loud House), Ahn Bui (BG Painter, Middlemost Post), Samuel Pagán (CG Generalist, Rugrats), Carl Edward Mongan (Storyboard Revisionist, Kamp Koral), Angel Hobbs (Staff Writer, That Girl Lay Lay) Marisa Torres (Background Painter, Santiago of the Seas), Jonathan Butler and Gabriel Garza (co-creators, Bella and the Bulldogs) and more. Outside of Nickelodeon, many program alumni have gone on to freelance and staff positions at various networks, including Showtime, HBO, DreamWorks, Netflix, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, Disney+, Kids’ WB!, ABC, FOX, PBS, Cartoon Network, and the CW.

Applications are open for the Nickelodeon Writing Program 2022 . Founded in the year 2000, the Nickelodeon Writing Program is a full-time, paid, yearlong development Program for television comedy writers with unique voices and from underrepresented communities.

Join them at the studio in Burbank for classes and workshops to sharpen your skills, executive mentorship and networking to build your professional relationships, and the opportunity to work in the iconic live-action and animation writers’ rooms at Nick. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dedicate yourself to the craft of writing and build your career from the ground up.

The Nick Writing Program is not a writing contest – It’s a launching pad for diverse and emerging creatives. If you bring the unique voice and innovative ideas for kids’ and family content, they’ll help you launch a career with all the tools you’ll need to succeed in the industry for years to come. • The Program takes place at Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California. Writers who are accepted will need to relocate to the LA area. Roundtrip airfare and one month’s furnished accommodations are provided. However, all transportation (once in LA) and any moving costs (of personal effects) are the individual writer’s responsibility.

Eligibility

• You must be 18 years or older, and eligible to work in the United States to participate.
• A strong writing background is encouraged, but anyone with professional TV writing credits is no longer eligible for the Program.

Nickelodeon announced the 10 participants for its annual writing and artist programs, designed to support creative voices from underrepresented communities.

Selected participants include Kobie Scott, Lauren Monroe, Hannah Suria, and Frank Paiva for the writing program; Cherrie Wang, Katarina Perez, Roger Hernandez, Emily Monjaraz, Booker Jackson, and David Lu for the artist program.

“ Nickelodeon ’s long-running Writing and Artist Programs continue to provide aspiring creative minds with the tools to help launch their careers and deliver inclusive stories that reflect the voices of our diverse audiences,” said Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President, Global Head of Inclusion, ViacomCBS.

This year will see the addition of peer mentoring as well as a deeper introduction to Nickelodeon’s culture and inclusive work environment.

You must be 18 years or older, and eligible to work in the United States to participate.

If you have previously applied to the Program and were not selected, you are welcome and encouraged to apply again with a new spec script for each submission period.

All applicants must submit a spec script written based on a show on our Accepted Shows List , and a half-hour original comedy pilot that adheres to the following guidelines:

·       Spec must be based on a show on the current year’s Accepted Shows List (watch our social media channels for announcements), and pilot must be based on your own original idea.

·       Typed in industry standard (Final Draft or equivalent) script format.

·       In 12pt black courier style font.

·       .pdf file format.

·       Do not include personal information that can be used to identify the writer (no name, no contact info), and leave off the cover page.

·       The following information should be included in the header/footer of your scripts:

  o    Centered Header: Name of the show

  o    Centered Footer: Name of the episode

·       The file name should be formatted as follows: “Name of Show – Name of Episode.pdf” Do not include you own name in the file name, or the submission will not be accepted.

Please note: Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered for placement in the Program.

Nickelodeon Announces Participants for Annual Writing and Artist Programs

2022 program adds additional artist spot while expanding curriculum to include peer mentoring; the highly successful 2021 program saw artist participants staffed across Nickelodeon productions with all writers staffed across ViacomCBS.

Nickelodeon has announced the selection of 10 individuals to participate in its annual Writing and Artist Programs. Helmed by the ViacomCBS Office of Global Inclusion and aligned with the company’s Content for Change initiative, the programs are designed to develop the next generation of creative voices from underrepresented communities. Four aspiring television writers will be invited to participated in the 22nd annual Writing Program with the opportunity to hone their skills while working at the Nickelodeon studio. Six emerging artists will develop their craft during the 10th annual Artist Program.

The news comes on the heels of the second year of remote programming, which marked the most successful year ever for Nickelodeon’s Creative Talent Development & Outreach team. All five artists from the 2021 Artist Program were staffed on Nickelodeon productions and all four writers were staffed on projects across ViacomCBS. 

“Nickelodeon’s long-running Writing and Artist Programs continue to provide aspiring creative minds with the tools to help launch their careers and deliver inclusive stories that reflect the voices of our diverse audiences,” commented Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President, Global Head of Inclusion, ViacomCBS and Executive Vice President, Public Affairs, Kids & Family Entertainment Brands, ViacomCBS Media Networks. “Aligned with ViacomCBS’ Content for Change initiative, these programs also affirm our commitment to ensuring an equitable and inclusive pipeline that removes barriers to entry for underrepresented storytellers and continues our work to change the face of content creation.”

This year’s addition of Peer Mentoring strengthens the program’s overall impact, providing participants with one-on-one mentorship, as well as a deeper introduction to Nickelodeon’s culture and inclusive work environment.

Within the Writing Program, all participants get a chance to network with executives and show creators, gain firsthand experience writing scripts, pitch story ideas, and attend workshops, seminars, classes, and experience working writers’ rooms. These writers will develop their skills with hands-on work during the yearlong program.

The writers will be individually paired with Nickelodeon’s Linda Halder (Senior Manager, Live Action Development), Mary Harrington (Executive Producer, Preschool Development), and Conrad Montgomery (VP, Animation Development), who will work with them on professional development, writing and network building at the studio.

The Writing Program participants are:

• Kobie Scott: Born and raised in Georgia, Scott was always connected to animation. He was accepted into Georgia Southern University, with plans to be a staff writer in the video game industry, but quickly realized TV writing was more his speed. He bought books about scriptwriting and story structure and took animation classes to gain a greater understanding of the art form.
• Lauren Monroe: (she/her) A fat, queer, neurodiverse writer, Monroe grew up in Atlanta with a nerdy mom who cosplayed at conventions, taught high school English, and instilled a love of fantasy storytelling. Now Monroe happily writes colorful fantasy worlds for kids with queerness and nuanced perspectives of diverse bodies and brains.
• Hannah Suria: A writer and performer from Orange County, CA, Suria is the proud daughter of immigrants (a mixed mom from Singapore and a Tamil-Sri Lankan father from Malaysia). Writing stopped being a hobby and became an integral part of her life when, as an aspiring actor, she quickly discovered roles for women who look like her were few and far between.
• Frank Paiva: (he/they) A gay and queer person of size from Seattle, Paiva grew up in the early 2000s, struggling to find a blueprint for the rest of their life in popular media. Newly based in Los Angeles, Paiva writes comedies with heart, with a particular interest in LGBTQ history and expanding the range of body types that audiences see onscreen.

During the six-month Artist Program, aspiring artists will learn from lead artists and practice their craft as they work on an animated series in various stages of production. Tracks include storyboard, general design, or CG generalist. The CG track was first offered last year to service many of the Nickelodeon Animation Studio’s current and upcoming CG productions.

The artists are paired with artistic mentors at Nickelodeon to guide their production experience, including Ashley Kliment (Art Director, The Loud House ); Jeff Chozon (Art Director, Transformers ) and Jermaine Jose (Art Director, Transformers ); Kimberly Mills (Storyboard Director, Big Nate ) and Vypac Voeur (Lead CG Generalist, Big Nate ); Chris Graham (Supervising Director, Santiago of the Seas ); and Sica Von Medicus (CG Supervisor, Max & The Midknights ).

The Artist Program participants are:

• Cherrie Wang (Storyboard Track): Wang has spent her entire life doodling on anything she could get her hands on. Her family didn’t understand the world of art and animation, so she attended the University of Southern California where she earned her degree in Computer Science and Engineering. She taught herself how to storyboard via the internet and recently moved back to Los Angeles to pursue her calling full-time.
• Katarina Perez (CG Track): A Mexican American artist born and raised in Houston, Texas she was introduced to a 3D animation course in high school and became enamored by all that you could do in a 3-dimensional space. This propelled her to pack up and move to Dallas to pursue a Bachelor of Animation at the University of Texas at Dallas.
• Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist Track): Born in the Greater Los Angeles area to immigrant parents from El Salvador, Hernandez’s parents were always a pillar of support. Despite limited resources, they got him through college where he pursued his dream in CG animation at Cal State Northridge. Though truly a CG generalist, his primary focus is CG modeling. Sculpting 3D models is his passion and it is his goal to share his vision and talent through his art.
• Emily Monjaraz (General Design Track): Monjaraz started her career illustrating kids’ books and doing graphic design for toy companies that encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM. Her mission is to create content for children learning how to harness their differences into super-powers as well as create stories and characters that represent the world in which she grew up.
• Booker Jackson (Storyboard Track):  From Sacramento, CA, Jackson was captivated by animation from a young age after seeing a fun Nickelodeon behind the scenes segment about a day in the life of a story artist. He is passionate about diversifying the world of animation and mentoring those who will come after him.
• David Lu (General Design Track): From Vancouver, Canada, Lu spent his formative years watching a variety of cartoons that influenced him to become an artist. Convinced by his family that art was not a feasible career, Lu went to the Bay Area to write code in exchange for cold hard cash. However, Lu's artistic desires were not satisfied, so for the past couple of years he has been focused on building his portfolio to break into the animation industry and live his childhood dream of creating cartoons.

Alumni of the programs who have gone on to hold positions on Nickelodeon shows include May Chan (co-executive producer, The Astronauts ); Sarah Jacques (Art Director, Santiago of the Seas ); Anna Hill (storyboard artist, The Loud House ); Ahn Bui (BG Painter, Middlemost Post ); Samuel Pagán (CG Generalist, Rugrats ); Carl Edward Mongan (Storyboard Revisionist, Kamp Koral ); Angel Hobbs (Staff Writer, That Girl Lay Lay ); Marisa Torres (Background Painter , Santiago of the Seas ); and Jonathan Butler and Gabriel Garza (co-creators, Bella and the Bulldogs ). Outside of Nickelodeon, many program alumni have gone on to freelance and staff positions at various networks, including Showtime; HBO; DreamWorks; Netflix; Comedy Central; Disney Channel; Disney+; Kids’ WB!; ABC; FOX; PBS; Cartoon Network; and the CW.

The Nickelodeon Writing Program is a global training designed to recruit, advance, and assign talented writers to productions by Nickelodeon.

Graduates of the program have written their own shows for popular Nickelodeon programs.

Here is what you need to know about the Nickelodeon Writing Program:

The Nickelodeon Writing Program is a full-time paid writing fellowship that lasts for up to one year. Apply by following the four application steps: select a track, prepare a spec script and original script, select an approved show, and complete your submission using the Coverfly online portal.

However, there are important details that can make or break your success, and exclusive insider “hacks” to help you dominate your competition.

In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the Nickelodeon Writing Program.

How Do You Get Into the Nickelodeon Writing Program?

To win, you first must be eligible and know the framework for applying to the program. Although these are the fundamentals, they require full understanding.

Eligibility comes down to age. You must be 18 years or older at the time of your application.

Many people that meet the age requirement overlook the simple application steps. Not you, though, because you want to win.

And winners do what losers refuse to do.

Writers who win the Nickelodeon Writing Program Fellowship master the basics, follow the rules, and complete all the steps.

There are four basic steps to getting into the writing program.

• Pick a submission track
• Prepare two scripts
• Select a show for your spec script
• Apply online via Coverfly

You can choose from three tracks:

• Kids’ Content Track (Your audience is kids ages 6-11)
• The Preschool Track (Your audience is kids ages 2-6)
• The Preteen/Young Adult Tract (Your audience is young adults ages 11-17)

For any of these three tracks, you must prepare both a spec script and also an original pilot script. Note that you don’t need to write your spec script or original script submission for the age group you choose.

However, your spec script must be written for a show on the accepted show list (see an example list later in this post).

Finally, you complete your submission package and apply through the provided online portal .

7 Easy Ways To Win The Nickelodeon Writers Program

Now that you know the basic steps that get your foot in the door, it’s time to cover the seven ways to crush your competition.

Not all of the rules sound fun, but they all help you win.

1) Scrupulously Follow All the Rules

The most important way to win against the majority of other submissions is to follow every detail of every rule. Most people will slip up and get eliminated.

They will eliminate themselves by not precisely following the rules.

I highly encourage you to study and restudy the rules. Read the submission guidelines and spec script formatting guidelines over and over again. Read them until your eyes hurt.

You’ll think that you don’t need to or that you’ve studied the rules enough. Study them again anyway.

Here are a few specific rules to master:

• Submission period: July 1,[Current Year] to 11:59 August 1 PST.
• Submit a completed and signed submission release form for both your spec script and your original script.
• Submit a completed and signed schedule A form for both your spec script and your original script.
• Follow all script formatting rules from Nickelodeon.

2) Join the r/Screenwritting Reddit

Join and engage with other writers on the r/Screenwritting Reddit. You can swap scripts for feedback, ask questions, and find encouragement for your efforts.

You’ll learn important tips you can’t get anywhere else because users update them constantly.

3) Focus on the O.C.V

When preparing your scripts, focus on the O.C.V. (originality, craft, and voice).

These elements will leapfrog you ahead of others who write the same ideas in the same boring way.

Cookie-cutter scripts for stale stories.

Stand out by twisting familiar tropes into original directions. Demonstrate your range of craft in the description, dialogue, and characterization.

Speak with a clear and vivid voice. Don’t water down your personality, highlight it.

4) Reverse-Engineer the Show You Spec

Once you choose a show for your spec script off the approved list, study the heck out of it. Watch the entire series, then watch it again. Reverse-engineer the plot, characters, dialogue, etc.

Write down patterns. Keep notes on the personality, speech, and behavioral tics of the main characters.

Don’t repeat plots or subplots.

Come up with something original that is consistent with the overall storyline. Put a fresh twist on a familiar show. Explore new territory.

This is not the place nor the time to hold back.

5) Study Winning Scripts

If you scour the internet, you can find winning scripts to study. To save you some time, check out these winning scripts .

The Reddit user who created this Dropbox of scripts says these are a few of the available scripts:

• Short Film script – Won a few contents and a student Emmy. • Spec “That 70’s Show” – Won the Nickelodeon Fellowship. • Spec “CSI” – Won Fox New Writer’s Award and Runner up WB Writer’s Workshop. • Spec “Avatar, Last Airbender” – Written while a Nickelodeon Fellow on that show. • Spec “Scrubs” – Runner up ABC/Disney Fellowship

6) Crush the Nickelodeon Writers Program Interviews

Even after your scripts get accepted, you still need to impress Nickelodeon executives, writers, and other interviewers to get chosen for the Fellowship.

According to online accounts , these will be speed interviews, approximately 10 or 11 of them over a 3-day period. Each interview will last about 10 minutes.

Some of the interviews will be one-on-one. Some will include groups of interviewers scoring you on various categories.

That means selling yourself.

Prepare short, punchy answers to common interview questions:

• Tell us about yourself (make this the most compelling 2-minute version of your life)
• What is your film experience?
• What are your writing credits?
• What inspired you to write this script?
• What shows do you like to watch?
• Why do you want to be a TV writer?

Practice with others and record yourself so that you can improve your body language, voice tone, and responses. Be prepared to repeat the same stories over and over again to new interviewers.

Prepare just as thoroughly for your interviews as you did for your script submissions.

7) Prepare a Second Secret Spec Script

There are accounts of interviewers asking for additional spec scripts during the Nickelodeon Writing Program application process. Don’t disappoint.

Be ready with an extra script to share.

This will ultimately make you stand out as a professional writer who is motivated to succeed. Your spec script should be based on a show in the approved list (see the link earlier in this article).

In an ideal world, your second spec script will be drafted, revised, and formatted for instant submission. It’s a nice idea to keep an electronic and hard copy version.

Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship Rules

First, of all, you must send both a spec script and   an original comedy pilot to be considered for the writing fellowship at Nickelodeon.

Here are a few guidelines to follow:

• You must base your spec script on a television series from the Accepted Shows List (check the submissions guidelines for an updated list).
• Submit your draft in a standard script format.
• Use a black, 12 pt font that is formatted in the Courier style.
• This is important: Only send your script. Don’t upload a cover letter to go along with your script.

You’ll also need to include certain information in the header/footer of your spec script:

• Show name/title (Center this information in the header)
• Episode name/title (Center this information in the footer)
• The Filename (The only thing you put in the filename is the show title and episode title)

You can add this information to the first page or all pages.

Finally, don’t put your name anywhere on the file or script (including the file name). If you do, your submission will not be accepted or reviewed.

How Long Is the Nickelodeon Writing Program?

The length of the program depends on which track you choose in the first step of the application process.

• The general track: This is a 1 year, full-time commitment.
• The kindergarten track: This is a 6 month, full-time commitment.

Note that either commitment is full-time. There is little room for other jobs, schooling, or any other conflicting commitments.

How Much Does the Nickelodeon Writing Program Pay?

I couldn’t find a salary amount listed on an official Nickelodeon website, but anecdotal information I found says it is a salary of $50K (over a year) and possibly $1,000.00 per week.

That’s a pretty amazing Nickelodeon Writing Program salary.

Nick announces writing/artist program participants

The viacomcbs kidsnet has expanded its annual talent development initiative for underrepresented communities to include 10 emerging voices..

Nickelodeon has selected 10 participants for this year’s annual writing and artists programs. Chosen by the ViacomCBS office of global inclusion, four up-and-coming TV writers and six aspiring artists (one more than last year ) will get to sharpen their skills at the Nickelodeon studio.

The four writers are Kobie Scott (pictured top right), a Georgia Southern University grad with a major in writing and linguistics and a minor in animation; Lauren Monroe (pictured top right), a queer and neurodiverse writer who creates fantasy worlds for kids with queerness and nuanced perspectives on diverse bodies and brains; Hannah Suria (pictured bottom left), a writer/performer from a mixed-race family who wants to write more roles for women who look like her; and Frank Paiva (pictured bottom right), a queer comedy writer in LA who’s focused on LGBTQ history and body positivity.

All of the writing program participants will get the opportunity to network with Nickelodeon execs and content creators as they write scripts, pitch story ideas and attend workshops, seminars and classes during the year-long program. They’ll be individually paired with the following mentors: Linda Halder (senior manager of live-action development), Mary Harrington (executive producer of preschool development) and Conrad Montgomery (VP of animation development).

This year’s artist participants are: Cherrie Wang, a USC computer science and engineering grad who is pivoting into a storyboarding career; Katarina Perez, a Mexican-American artist with a Bachelor of Animation degree from the University of Texas in Dallas; Roger Hernandez, a CG-focused artist with a passion for sculpting 3D models; Emily Monjaraz, a former children’s book illustrator and toy graphic designer who wants to create stories and characters for kids that represent the world in which she grew up; Sacramento’s Booker Jackson, who aspires to diversify animation and mentor next-gen talent; and David Lu, a Canadian coder looking to live his dream of making cartoons.

Wang and Jackson both chose to take advantage of the program’s storyboard track; Perez picked the CG track and Hernandez the CG generalist track; and Monjaraz and Lu opted for general design.

During the six-month program, they will learn about various stages of production from lead artists at Nick including Ashley Kliment (art director on The Loud House ), Jeff Chozon and Jermaine Jose (who both art-directed Transformers ), Kimberly Mills (storyboard director on Big Nate ), Vypac Voeur (lead CG generalist from Big Nate ), Chris Graham (supervising director on Santiago of the Seas ) and Sica Von Medicus (CG supervisor on Max & The Midknights ).

Alumni from Nick’s writing and artists programs now work on shows such as Middlemost Post ,  That Girl Lay Lay and  Kamp Koral . And others have landed freelance and staff jobs at companies including DreamWorks, Netflix, Disney+ and Cartoon Network.

Applications are open for the Nickelodeon Writing Program 2022. Founded in the year 2000, the Nickelodeon Writing Program is a full-time, paid, yearlong development Program for television comedy writers with unique voices and from underrepresented communities.

Join them at the studio in Burbank for classes and workshops to sharpen your skills, executive mentorship and networking to build your professional relationships, and the opportunity to work in the iconic live-action and animation writers’ rooms at Nick. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dedicate yourself to the craft of writing and build your career from the ground up.

Cost of Nickelodeon Writing Program

• The Program takes place at Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California. Writers who are accepted will need to relocate to the LA area. Roundtrip airfare and one month’s furnished accommodations are provided. However, all transportation (once in LA) and any moving costs (of personal effects) are the individual writer’s responsibility.

Eligibility for Nickelodeon Writing Program

• You must be 18 years or older, and eligible to work in the United States to participate.
• A strong writing background is encouraged, but anyone with professional TV writing credits is no longer eligible for the Program.

Application of Nickelodeon Writing Program

All submissions must be completed by 11:59pm PST on August 1, 2022. No late submissions will be considered.
