How to report youtube videos and comments.

YouTube is a wild west of content.

Quick Links

What is against youtube’s community guidelines, how to report a youtube video, how to report a youtube comment.

YouTube is a wild west of content. There are some great videos there, but also some truly awful ones . You can help out by reporting questionable content.

With 300 hours of video being uploaded to YouTube every minute , there’s just no way for Google to effectively police it all. That’s where you, the viewer, come in. If you think a video is against YouTube’s Community Guidelines , you can report it. YouTube’s human moderators (who are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year) will then review it. If it is against the Guidelines, it will get removed and the YouTube Channel will face sanctions. Too many violations (or ones that are too objectionable) and the whole Channel can be removed. Let’s look at how to do it.

YouTube’s Community Guidelines are pretty vague---and for good reason. The vagueness allows Google some leeway in determining what content they allow on the platform. The things they explicitly cover under the guidelines include:

  • Nudity or sexual content
  • Harmful or dangerous content
  • Hateful content
  • Violent or graphic content
  • Harassment and cyberbullying
  • Spam and scams
  • Copyright infringement
  • Privacy violations
  • Impersonation
  • Child endangerment

If you see videos that go against these guidelines (or other stuff you think is questionable), you can report it.

For a feature that’s so important, the option to report a video on YouTube is actually slightly hidden, so it's easy to overlook if you don't know it's there.

First off, you do need to be logged in to your Google account to report a video. After you log in, click the three little dots beneath the video.

In the popup menu, click the "Report" option.

To report a video using the YouTube mobile app, you need to first tap the video to bring up all the options and controls. Next, tap the three little dots in the top right corner, and then click the "Report" option.

Whichever platform you report the video on, you need to provide YouTube with a little more information. Select the reason you think it violates the Community Guidelines, and then click the "Next" button.

Add in any additional information that explains the issues with the video, and then click "Report."

YouTube’s moderators will review your report as soon as possible.

Videos aren’t the only place you find questionable content on YouTube; the comment section is famously awful. If you see a comment that goes against the Community Guidelines---or looks like it’s spam---here’s how to report it.

Once again, on the website, the option is a little hidden. If you just look at a comment, there’s no obvious way to report it.

Once you hover your mouse over it, however, three little dots appear on the right hand side.

Click those dots, and then select the "Report Spam or Abuse" option.

Select the reason you’re reporting the comment, and then click "Report."

In the mobile app, things are a little more obvious. The three little dots aren’t hidden, so just tap them, and then tap "Report."

YouTube has serious content issues. With so many thousands of hours of videos uploaded everyday, it’s no wonder that some portion of them is pretty awful. There’s also the ongoing abuse that happens in the comments. Now at least, you know how to do something about it.

How to report a YouTube video that you find inappropriate or rule-breaking

  • If you see a YouTube video that you feel is inappropriate, you can report the video to YouTube for potential removal.
  • People who report YouTube videos are kept anonymous, while if the report is accepted, the party that posted the content will be informed that their video is under review.
  • Repeatedly posting videos that are flagged by viewers and confirmed as inappropriate by moderators can lead to YouTube account termination.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

YouTube's rules aren't very strict, but there are still a number of rules that creators need to follow. If you see a video on YouTube that you think is inappropriate or illegal, be it hate speech, pornographic, libelous, or otherwise improper, you can report the video to YouTube.

You will remain anonymous when reporting a YouTube video, while the report will go to a group of YouTube moderators to review. If the report is accepted, whoever posted the video will be told their content is under review. Any account that repeatedly posts inappropriate YouTube videos could ultimately be terminated and banned from the site.

How to report a YouTube video

1. While logged into your YouTube account, go to the video in question.

2. Click on the three dots below the video, to the right of the view count and title, and then hit "Report."

3. Select the primary reason you're reporting the video ("Spam or misleading," e.g.) and then select a specific reason from the dropdown menu that appears. If there are offensive links in the video, click the box that indicates as such. Click "Next" once you're done.

4. Mark down the timestamp where the offensive content occurs, and add any comments you have to support your report and tell moderators what to look for.

5. Click "Report" to confirm the report, and then let YouTube's moderators take care of the rest.

So, in this article, we'll take a look at everything you need to know about how to report content on YouTube.

JUMP TO SECTION:

How to Report a Channel on YouTube

How to report youtube videos, faq: is reporting a youtube comment anonymous, does youtube reporting work.

Reporting a YouTube channel is no fun, but it’s necessary when a creator is irresponsible on the platform. Whether they’re posting abusive content or harassing someone (possibly even you), it makes YouTube less enjoyable. After all, you came for laughs and community – not mudslinging.

But reporting a user is serious. You want to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and not because the option exists.

Here’s why most people flag a channel on YouTube :

  • Report spam or abuse
  • Report a fake YouTube account or channel impersonation
  • Make YouTube aware of inappropriate content
  • Report harassment on YouTube (or bullying)
  • Stop the spread of misinformation/disinformation
  • Report violations of YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service

Rather than flagging individual videos, you can report users on YouTube by visiting their channel homepage . Here’s how:

  • Log in to YouTube and find the channel you need to report.
  • Click About on the channel navigation tab.
  • Under the stats column, click the YouTube report button (flag icon).
  • Select a reporting option from the drop-down menu: block user, report channel art, report profile picture, or report user.
  • Continue filling out the form to finish the report.

Options for reporting a YouTube channel: Block user, report channel art, report profile picture, report user.

Unfortunately, you can’t report a YouTube channel on mobile. You’ll need to find a desktop computer and complete the steps above to file a report.

If you need to report a video (not a channel or YouTube user), follow these steps:

  • Click the menu icon (three horizontal dots) below the video you’re watching.
  • Click Report .
  • Choose a reason for reporting the video: sexual content, violence, abuse, spam, misinformation, bullying, etc.

Do you need to flag a YouTube video using your smartphone? Here’s how:

  • Find the video you need to report.
  • Tap the video frame, then tap the gear symbol that appears. Select Report .
  • Select a reason for reporting the video.
  • Tap Report .

Yes! According to YouTube, no one will know you’ve reported a comment. The same goes for videos, playlists, thumbnails, live chat messages, channels, and links.

To report a YouTube comment :

  • Click the three dots to the right of the message and select Report .
  • Choose a reason, such as misinformation, hate speech, spam, or abuse.
  • Click Report again to finish the form.

YouTube comment reporting options

You have the right to report comments, but be careful what you mark as spam on YouTube . You might get banned from the platform if you misuse the feature.

The reporting system works well enough, but that doesn’t mean YouTube removes every piece of content someone reports. First, YouTube reviews the content to see if it violates community guidelines.

If it does, YouTube will either:

  • remove the content from its platform
  • restrict the content to mature audiences

Also, try to avoid thinking, How many reports to take down this YouTube video? According to YouTube, no amount of reporting will make a difference if reviewers don't see a violation.

Reporting users is a bit of a downer, so let’s brighten things up with a better YouTube task: making friends .

How to report a YouTube channel anonymously if you believe it's violating YouTube's community guidelines

Dado Ruvic / Reuters

You may want to report a YouTube channel if someone is posting offensive content, but YouTube might not take its content down right away.

  • You can report a YouTube channel anonymously, so you don't have to worry that the user or channel will be able to track the report back to you.
  • You may want to report a YouTube channel if someone is posting offensive or hateful content, but keep in mind it will take time since YouTube needs to review your report and see if the content violates the platform's community guidelines.
  • Here's what you need to know to report a YouTube channel on your computer or mobile device.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

When it comes to the internet, there's a relatively simple idea that a lot of people tend to forget.

To paraphrase Uncle Ben : With great freedom and power, comes great responsibility. When people forget that (just ask any internet troll) and end up posting offensive content, you can report them and hopefully curb their behavior.

On YouTube , reporting is completely anonymous, so you don't have to worry about retaliation from the channel you choose to report. But, at the same time, reporting doesn't have immediate repercussions.

For example, if you want to report a video for inappropriate content, it wouldn't be immediately taken down. Someone has to review it and decide if the content truly goes against YouTube's community guidelines, which are often changing and always under scrutiny .

Though, in some cases, a reported video may get hit with an age restriction to help ensure that it isn't viewed by those who aren't mature enough to see it.

Here's what you'll need to do to report a YouTube channel.

This year, we turned our focus to the rapid technological changes in creation and consumption that are enabling creators and their fans to put these individual perspectives front and center. For our latest report, we conducted surveys in 14 countries and analyzed hundreds of trends to better understand how creative tools are being used to offer new means of expression and produce moments that resonate in culture today.

You can read the full report here . If you’re a marketer, advertiser or work with a brand, you can watch a tour of the report hosted by top creator Airrack , including some key takeaways. Creators can get even more usable perspective from this discussion by Colin and Samir .

We found that some key components are behind the moments that are breaking through: fandom becoming more multilayered , formats expanding, increased access to casual and experiential tools , and an explosion of AI-based technologies .

47% of Gen Z have watched videos made by fans of specific content, artists, or public figures over the past 12 months.

The many layers of Fandom

As the digital environment evolves, fandom is becoming more stratified, with new levels of participation enabling casual and superfans alike to express themselves online across multiple formats. And viewers are eager to consume this output: 47% of Gen Z have watched videos made by fans of specific content, artists, or public figures over the past 12 months.

Multiformat experiences

Key to this dimensionalized fandom is the growth of formats beyond long-form, most notably short-form but also livestreams and podcasts. Creators have embraced storytelling across these offerings, which lets audiences personalize their consumption even further: 87% of people have watched at least 4 of the content formats that YouTube offers over the past 12 months.

Casual & experiential tools

From remixing to clipping to filters and effects, there are more tools than ever before that let creators take part and lend their unique spin to moments as they happen. At the same time, audiences can tailor how they’re experiencing this content thanks to features like multi-language audio and new ways of using closed captions.

There have been more than 1.7 billion views of videos related to generative AI tools in 2023.

AI-based technologies

AI is everywhere, but to make sense of how it’s changing pop culture it’s crucial to study the ways creators are adapting the technology to extend and reimagine ideas. There have been more than 1.7 billion views of videos related to generative AI tools in 2023 . The unprecedented speed at which this content is produced means that videos can exist in conversation with each other, expanding an individual piece of content’s meaning.

While the pace of change can be daunting, there are more opportunities than ever to create moments that break through. We hope that this report will provide you with the context and insights to do so, no matter what your role might be.

Rounding out the top five are Bodega El Capricho in Jiménez de Jamuz, Spain; Margaret in Sydney, Australia (the highest new entry); Cote in New York; and Carcasse in Koksijde, Belgium. Across the United States and Canada, an impressive 25 restaurants made the cut for the entire list, with Cote being followed by Chicago’s Asador Bastian at No. 14, Vancouver’s Elisa at No. 20, San Francisco’s Niku Steakhouse at 21, and New York’s Beefbar at No. 22.

Man dies in Homer moose attack, troopers report

A man died in a moose attack in Homer Sunday, Alaska State Troopers said.

The circumstances of the attack — as well as the exact location — were not immediately clear as of Sunday.

Troopers received a report around 11:50 a.m. about a man attacked by a cow moose in Homer, according to an online statement . Medics as well as troopers from Anchor Point responded to the incident.

The man died on the scene, troopers said.

According to the report, the cow moose charged two men, kicking one of them.

The moose left the area after the incident, troopers said.

A spokesman for the Alaska Department of Public Safety said the incident occurred in a neighborhood outside the Homer city limits.

The investigation was ongoing, troopers said Sunday.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
