Career Guide: ROV Pilot Technician

In the third post in our series of offshore career guides, we detail the role of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) pilot technician.

Job Breakdown

An ROV pilot technician handles the operation, maintenance and repair of an ROV and its systems. ROVs accomplish tasks in underwater environments that are often too deep or too dangerous for human divers. These tasks vary as ROVs are used in fields ranging from subsea oil and gas development projects, IRM (Inspection, Repair and Maintenance) construction to UXO surveys, cable lay / pipe lay, trenching, salvage and scientific research.

The tasks differ depending on the seniority level of the ROV pilot technician. ROV pilot technicians begin at Grade II and can end up as high as ROV superintendents, moving from hands-on ROV piloting to a more supervisory and project planning role.

General ROV Pilot Technician duties include:

• Assembling, testing and preparing ROV systems
• Launching and controlling the ROV from an offshore vessel or rig into underwater depths of up to 4,000 metres
• Piloting ROV to execute mission briefs
• Cameras and sonar displays for navigation and inspection
• Intervention tools such as robotic manipulators or “arms” for simple actions such as picking up objects and maintaining moving parts on subsea manifolds
• Relaying, recording and interpreting data during and after the dive
• Complying with company/client, as well as industry health and safety, standards
• Reporting faults and breaches of safety procedures to supervisors
• Maintaining and repairing the ROV and its systems regularly
• Liaising with other departments for equipping and upgrading the ROV
• Performing hydraulic and electronic construction

ROV pilot technicians can make a lateral career move to work as ROV tooling technicians, which focus on the operation and maintenance of remote intervention tooling (RIT) systems attached to and used by ROVs. General tasks include using remote-operated tools for remote installation, module replacement and subsea asset repair and decommissioning.

Working Hours and Environment

ROV pilot technicians generally work on offshore vessels, platforms, rigs and marine laboratories, with some stationed in coastal facilities. In line with most offshore careers, working as an ROV pilot technician means long hours. Shifts can last up to 12 hours. Jobs typically take weeks to a month out at sea.

ROV operation takes place inside a control cabin shared with a small staff of around 3 people. Professional setups are generally warm and clean.

ROV maintenance and repairs are done on the deck of a vessel or platform. Depending on the location, ROV pilot technicians can be exposed to harsh weather conditions while performing such tasks. Special gear has to be worn in cold environments. They may also be expected to do some heavy lifting.

Living aboard a ship or an offshore rig does not afford much space inside crew quarters. Like with any offshore job, it is not uncommon for ROV pilot technicians to work alongside people of various nationalities. Job Entry and Qualifications

There are multiple ways to become an ROV pilot technician.

The general entry point to this career is having one of the following educational achievements in mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering:

• Higher National Certificate
• Higher National Diploma
• Ordinary Bachelor’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree with Honours

Another entry point is performing military service in national military organisations (RAF, Royal Navy or the Merchant Navy in the UK) and getting training in the following:

• Marine engineering
• Aircraft engineering

It may be helpful to have knowledge and work experience in the following fields:

• Earth Science
• Marine Biology
• Oceanography
• Meteorology

Meanwhile, to be covered for work in the North Sea and further afield, offshore work will generally require a combination of the following certificates or documents:

• Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET)
• OGUK Medical Certificate
• Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET)
• Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST)
• Seaman’s Book
• Competency Certificate
• STCW or GWO certificates

Companies tend to look for the following skills and characteristics:

An entry-level ROV pilot technician can have an annual salary starting from £25,000 to £40,000.

Meanwhile, a Senior ROV pilot technician can have an annual salary starting from £40,000 to £70,000.

An ROV pilot technician that has grown into that of an ROV Supervisor or Superintendent with strong system-specific, project and organisational expertise role can earn as much as £100,000 or even more in annual income.

Contracting is also a viable alternative to full-time employment when working as an ROV pilot technician. Workers are paid based on their day rate. How much demand there is for the specific job, where it takes place, how many days it takes to finish, the client’s commercial situation and the worker’s experience all affect freelance pay.

Based on 2019 market averages, a freelance ROV pilot technician might earn anywhere from £300 to £450 per day .

Senior ROV Pilot Technicians or Submersible Engineers (Sub Engs) should look for £350 - £500 per day and ROV Supervisors should look for £400 - £600 per day.

The above day-rate indicators will vary from client-to-client and project-to-project, so it is important to discuss the market regularly with your agency to know how to set your expectations.

It is also important to note that the above rates don’t take into account tax increased liabilities incurred in areas such as Norway, or hardships incurred through work in certain global areas of elevated risk. In such instances, the market has generally uplifted GROSS day rates by 10% to help offset any financial or personal hardship incurred through the undertaking of a freelance project as an ROV professional.

Training and Development

There are no statutory requirements in taking specialised ROV training to get a job as an ROV pilot technician. However, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published a guide ( called the IMCA R 002 ) that can serve as baseline education for understanding what goes into the work of an ROV pilot technician.

Do remember that perusing the IMCA document for entry level ROV requirements is not a prerequisite to getting hired. Taking courses from schools and training providers covering IMCA R 002 also does not make one qualified for an ROV pilot technician job.

Some companies provide in-house training to acquaint ROV personnel with their own ROV systems and procedures.

• The North Sea, along with other Norwegian naval territories such as the Barents and Norwegian seas, are mainstays in the offshore energy industry
• In Portugal, scientific expeditions and surveys are happening along the Azores
• The Gulf of Mexico remains a hotbed for offshore oil and gas work with companies based in the US and Mexico
• The East China Sea, the South China Sea and the Bohai Sea are the go-to locations for a job with Chinese offshore energy and survey companies
• Papua New Guinea is investing in offshore natural gas, with construction expected to begin in 2021 , so prospects are good for employment and contracting

Career Trajectory

An ROV pilot technician’s career usually starts with on-the-job training to get familiar with the company’s ROV systems. By the end of the training, the ROV pilot technician begins work as a base technician, or more specifically as an ROV Pilot Technician II.

With enough experience, the base technician can become an ROV pilot for a small ROV or a junior member of a multi-person crew on a large ROV. This is either streamed by the ROV company owing to the employees personal preference, or based upon the skills background of the budding ROV professional (traditionally, those with strong Mechanical or Hydraulic skills would be well suited to Work Class ROVs, whilst electrically and electronically-minded technicians would be better suited to smaller “Eyeball” or Observation Class ROVs).

Years of working as a junior ROV pilot technician and, subsequently, an ROV PIlot Technician I will lead to a role as a Senior ROV Pilot Technician. For those who have an aptitude for team management, project oversight and operations, progression to ROV supervisor, ROV Superintendent and - eventually - operations manager is possible.

R/V Falkor (too) – Hiring Job Description – ROV Senior Pilot Technician (Electronics)

Job Description: 

• Perform all ROV offshore and dockside operations, including any defined maintenance periods, as well as system maintenance and equipment integrations.
• Provide guidance to other ROV and shipboard personnel, ensuring they are appropriately trained offshore and competent for tasks undertaken.
• Ensure all ROV operations are carried out in accordance with appropriate procedures, and assist in the development of procedures where necessary.
• Perform and support ROV personnel evaluations and competence training plans.
• Liaison and communicate with Science Support Services Senior Manager and Company management and shipboard lead personnel and scientists related to operational tasks.
• Perform the integration of all ROV equipment, scientific sensors, and samplers.
• Complete system and cruise paperwork (e.g. inventory, technical/status/safety reports, dive logs, etc.).
• Inventory and stock control of the system spares and consumables.
• Perform supervisory duties as required.
• Perform other technical services, as and when needed, in relation to the mission of the Ship.
• Being familiar with all assigned safety and security duties, both at sea and in port.

• Valid STCW95 Basic Safety Training
• Valid Seafarers Medical Fitness Certificate (ENG1 or equivalent recognized by Cayman Islands)

• Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
• Good communication skills, including English language speaking and comprehension
• Negative drug test result on first day of employment
• Clean Criminal Record
• Clean background check verified prior to employment

Specific requirements for this position:

• The ability to demonstrate the relevant ROV experience (3+ years)

ROV PILOT TECHNICIAN

The opportunities we have are specific to the ROV sector and require individuals who have a proven track record. It is essential that you hold valid Offshore Medical, BOSIET and MIST certification and have an industry recognised competency certification (MTCS or similar) at Senior Pilot Technician or Supervisory level.

Ideally, you will have a trade background (electrical, mechanical or hydraulic trades), will be trained and competent in High Voltage isolations and will have extensive experience of working with high pressure hydraulics circuits. Good health and safety awareness along with NEBOSH (National General Certificate) or IOSH (Managing Safely) certification is desirable for supervisory posts. All applicants must have prior offshore ROV operational experience in a work class ROV or trenching environment.

Training Centers

Our training centers house multimedia-equipped classrooms, electronics and hydraulics laboratories, and a fully functional ROV with a complete control suite. Much of the curriculum focuses on the ROV simulators used for pilot training.

Working at the simulator console, trainees learn basic flying skills and experience many of the challenges of offshore operations—before being sent offshore for the first time.

Ocean Science Consulting Limited (OSC) seeks to enter into a joint venture with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technician/pilot to perform inshore ROV surveys (e.g. harbours, aquaculture, etc.). This is a rare opportunity for a suitably motivated candidate to build an ROV surveying wing within a successful marine consultancy. The candidate will be expected to source & secure work, then perform surveys. Main duties will include servicing, deploying, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining the ROV, as well as sales, marketing, promotion, business development, and client liaison. 

Applicants must be technically and commercially minded, able to undertake field-equipment installation, operation, deployment, and recovery at a high level. Ability to download, and quality control data from ROVs for scientists in the Research and Development (R&D) wing of the company is required. The successful applicant will assist with planning and execution of field work, and supplier liaison. The successful applicant will have prior experience with ROVs and other marine instrumentation. This post is based at the Company’s headquarters in Dunbar, Scotland, and will require travel to project sites nationally. This position is open only to those entitled legally to work in the UK and may involve working offshore. Discretion is essential (the position is under Non-Disclosure Agreement, NDA).

Currently we are about to kick start our recruitment campaign for Trainee ROV Pilot Technicians.

Trainee ROV Pilot Technicians will be put on an in house familiiarisation programme and shall report to the ROV Supervisor. This role is an offshore based position and will be assigned where operationally required by the company.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

Although this is an entry level trainee position, it is preferred that applicants have had some exposure to the fundamentals of ROV operation, such as an introductory ROV course.

The Trainee ROV Pilot Technician has the primary responsibility for assisting the ROV operations, completion of dive and video logs and general maintenance tasks (under supervision)

All personnel are expected to contribute to creating a positive HSEQ culture and ensure familiarity with and adherence to local HSEQ codes and practices.

All personnel are also expected to contribute to creating a culture of ethics, integrity  and ensure familiarity with and adherence to our Code of Conduct.

Key responsibilities:

• Must understand principles of the ROV control, navigational and propulsion systems.
• Must understand fundamental hydraulic, electric and electronic principals.
• Assist in the Launch and Recovery of the ROV System (supervised)
• Undertaking training in the ROV operations and maintenance according to our training and competency scheme.
• Undertake maintenance and repair of the ROV System under the supervision of the ROV Supervisor

Key Requirements:

• A nationally recognised technical or trade qualification (military service qualification and/or an appropriate level national vocational qualification is acceptable) completed in one or more of the following subjects: electrical; electronic; hydraulics or mechanics
• In addition to the above, a minimum of three years’ technically relevant industrial experience (including any accepted training period) in an appropriate discipline, which should have been obtained within the previous four years.
• As per Subsea 7 competence assurance system covering IMCA R002 – Entry Level Requirements for ROV Personnel.

Biden-Harris Administration Partners Announce Updated GREET Model to Measure Lifecycle Emissions from Sustainable Aviation Fuels 

WASHINGTON – Today the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released guidance on the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Credit established by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to create good-paying jobs and reduce climate pollution by spurring innovation in the aviation industry.  

The Treasury Department worked closely with Biden-Harris Administration partners, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Department of Energy (DOE) on today’s Notice.  

“President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is driving American innovation to create good-paying jobs and help the U.S. clear hurdles in our clean energy transition,” said U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen. “Incentives in the law are helping to scale production of low-carbon fuels and cut emissions from the aviation sector, one of the most difficult-to-transition sectors of our economy. Today’s guidance provides additional clarity and certainty to companies and producers.”

“Sustainable aviation fuel is a key part of the Biden-Harris Administration's efforts to transition the American economy to a clean energy future and rebuild the middle class from the bottom up to the middle out in rural America,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack . “Today’s announcement is an important stepping stone as it acknowledges the important role farmers can play in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and begins to reward them through that contribution in the production of new fuels. This is a great beginning as we develop new markets for sustainable aviation fuel that use home grown agricultural crops produced using climate smart agricultural practices. USDA will continue to work with our federal agency partners to expand opportunities in the future for climate smart agriculture in producing sustainable aviation fuel.”

“The Inflation Reduction Act’s tax credit for sustainable aviation fuels is a critical tool for decarbonizing air travel,” said John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy.  “Today’s announcement of an updated GREET model and Treasury guidance is a big step forward for American farmers, for American innovation, for American jobs, and for America’s ability to cut carbon pollution from our transportation sector and protect our planet.”

The Treasury Department’s guidance provides important clarity around eligibility for the SAF Credit. The credit incentivizes the production of SAF that achieves a lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reduction of at least 50% as compared with petroleum-based jet fuel. Producers of SAF are eligible for a tax credit of $1.25 to $1.75 per gallon. SAF that achieves a GHG emissions reduction of 50% is eligible for the $1.25 credit per gallon amount, and SAF that achieves a GHG emissions reduction of more than 50% is eligible for an additional $0.01 per gallon for each percentage point the reduction exceeds 50%, up to $0.50 per gallon. 

As part of today’s guidance, the agencies comprising the SAF Interagency Working Group (IWG) are jointly announcing the 40B SAF-GREET 2024 model. This model provides another methodology for SAF producers to determine the lifecycle GHG emissions rates of their production for the purposes of the SAF Credit.

The modified version of GREET incorporates new data, including updated modeling of key feedstocks and processes used in aviation fuel and indirect emissions. The modified GREET model also integrates key greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies such as carbon capture and storage, renewable natural gas, and renewable electricity.

The Notice released today also, on a pilot basis, incorporates a USDA pilot program to encourage the use of certain Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices for SAF feedstocks. Incorporating CSA practices into the production of SAF provides multiple benefits, including lower overall GHG emissions associated with SAF production and increased adoption of farming practices that are associated with other environmental benefits, such as improved water quality and soil health. 

For corn ethanol-to-jet, the pilot provides a greenhouse gas reduction credit if a “bundle” of certain CSA practices (no-till, cover crop, and enhanced efficiency fertilizer) are used. It similarly would allow a greenhouse gas reduction credit for soybean-to-jet if the soybean feedstock is produced using a “bundle” of applicable CSA practices (no-till and cover crop). This is a pilot program specific to the 40B credit, which is in effect for 2023 and 2024.

To credit CSA practices in the Clean Fuel Production Credit (45Z), which becomes available in 2025, the agencies will do further work on modeling, data, and assumptions, as well as verification. A new 45Z-GREET will be developed for use with the 45Z tax credit.
