WellView™ to AWS Cloud AppStream Conversion for Oil Company
“Upstream” is the segment of the oil and natural gas industry that is responsible for finding and producing crude oil and natural gas and also includes associated activities such as drilling wells, trucking supplies, and mining oil sands. One large upstream energy company engaged Sparkhound to modernize its legacy IT infrastructure to support continued growth.
![aws oil and gas case studies helmet](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5cc0d2e0b914495c264d0ae2/t/5d4b7b6ee0ae6100012254db/1565227903734/hard-hat.jpg)
Outdated IT Infrastructure Throttled Continued Growth
Many of these upstream organizations have multiple offices distributed across the globe, each running their own servers, databases, and applications. Companies in these upstream industries often have on-prem, legacy infrastructure because certain software takes added expertise to scale through the cloud. Such is the case with this particular upstream oil company and their WellView™ application.
The WellView database stores information related to all aspects of the oilwell lifecycle including information collecting, analyzing, monitoring, and reporting. This upstream oil company was using six physical sites with their own individual Test and Development instances of WellView. Each location included multiple SQL servers and frontends servers for a total of 85 servers and 10 WellView instances.
Implement AWS Cloud AppStream Conversion to Support Scalability and Global Accessibility
Sparkhound recommended consolidating the physical WellView environment into a fully-managed application streaming service from Amazon called AppStream.
The oil company’s AWS cloud migration project entailed reexamining its legacy processes with the goal of lowering IT costs and creating more agility via AppStream. Working side-by-side with the company’s DBAs and WellView application owners, Sparkhound overcame the hesitations by laying out a major, detailed digital transformation plan into the AWS cloud while tagging, monitoring and measuring WellView’s new cloud streaming process to all associated desktops.
![aws oil and gas case studies oil liquid](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5cc0d2e0b914495c264d0ae2/t/5d4b7e1da22be50001c7ac30/1565228581358/oil-splash.png)
Leveraging AppStream, the oil company was able to fully scale and stream WellView in the AWS cloud to all user desktops—in every office—without acquiring, provisioning and adding additional operating hardware. By doing this, the oil company was able to consolidate 85 SQL servers down to 15 and one instance.
Transformation
Cloud migration reduces it costs and creates more agility.
With Sparkhound’s skilled assistance, the upstream oil company simplified their WellView application delivery by consolidating their on-prem hardware, enabling them to stream the application from cloud. The benefits of the WellView cloud migration soon became apparent as the company was able to downsize its physical IT infrastructure by 70% while realizing faster application performance and the redundancies inherently built into the AWS cloud.

Oil and Gas Case Study
Customer profile.
A Fortune 100 multi-national petrochemical company with tens of thousands of employees in dozens of countries. Their goal is to leverage advanced technologies to create a future built on sustainable energy.
![aws oil and gas case studies Icon Challenge](https://d2cvk0rnfob1qq.cloudfront.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/icon-challenge.png)
The company has exploration teams made up of geoscientists and petrochemical engineers that analyze petabytes (PBs) of subsurface data to inform where they should drill for oil. While the company owns massive amounts of subsurface data, the speed and accuracy of analysis is significantly hindered by data silos across their organization. Since data is stored in physical IT environments throughout the world, it is difficult for exploration teams to access the data when they need it. Even when they can obtain approvals for access, it is cumbersome to transfer PBs of data for analysis.
Prior to the company’s engagement with 47Lining, it would take exploration teams roughly seven months to gather the required information before they could begin analysis and interpretation. Even then, they were only able to leverage approximately five percent of the available data, leading to unrealized opportunities to increase the quality of analysis and interpretation.
Given the competitive nature of their industry, this pace was unacceptable. As such, the company sought a cloud-based solution that would allow them to make all of their data securely discoverable and accessible, enabling explorers to analyze data faster and increase the accuracy of their predictions. Their goal was to accelerate the exploration process from seven months to three weeks.
![aws oil and gas case studies Icon Solution](https://d2cvk0rnfob1qq.cloudfront.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/icon-solution.png)
Why 47Lining on Amazon Web Services (AWS)?
To build a competitive advantage, this company wanted a solution that allowed them to truly own their data and leverage a wide variety of data sources. During the company’s search for a new solution, 47Lining and AWS presented a demonstration of the data platform using the company’s actual subsurface data. In the demo, 47Lining and AWS presented advanced map-based search capabilities, asset discovery, and in-depth analytics on subsets of the exploration team’s data. These capabilities demonstrated the speed and accuracy that the petrochemical company sought. As such, they decided to proceed with the development of a production implementation.
Establishing a global analytics solution
Since the demo, 47Lining has deployed a team of engineers on-site with the petrochemical company. These engineers have helped the company move from pilot to production, truly becoming a part of the client’s team.
Together, they built a petabyte-scale, microservices-based data platform atop underlying AWS services to ingest and analyze subsurface data. 47Lining has also developed web services on top of the data platform to handle data management, governance, search, and discovery. Additionally, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities help expedite the exploration process by automating repetitive tasks in the exploration process, such as detecting image similarities in maps and identifying salt traps. This enabled explorers to uncover viable drilling locations at an accelerated rate, and with greater accuracy.
The diagram below shows how the teams work together and the value that the data platform provides.
![aws oil and gas case studies Diagram Data Platform APIs Usage](https://d2cvk0rnfob1qq.cloudfront.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/diagram-oil-gas-case-study.png)
While still in the process of rolling out the solution at global scale, 47Lining has helped the company significantly increase the throughput of subsurface data for interpretation, enhanced the accuracy of hydrocarbon presence predictions, and lowered the risk of investments on dry wells.

In recent decades, sustainability has become a focal point within the oil and gas industry. Concerns about the environment have catalyzed discussions about climate action as well as initiatives for climate mitigation and adaptation. In an effort to reduce both the direct emissions associated with the exploration, production, transportation, and refining of carbon fuels as well as the emissions resulting from their eventual use, numerous publications, reports, books, and conventions have presented, analyzed, and compared the actions and strategies taken by governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. Currently, available reports and studies discuss specific scenarios related to the oil and gas industry, such as flaring, water usage, methane emissions, plastics waste and recycling, greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon reduction. They also provide insights into alternative products, such as alternative sources of energy in, for example, the utility and transportation sectors. Exploring new avenues for change will help companies solve these concerns and progress toward a sustainable future. It is inevitable that a deeper dive into upcoming methods and solutions that will help enable a “sustainable” transformation of the oil and gas industry is required. The motivation for such research is fueled by the increased concerns caused by climate change.
