Why is it a problem for number 3/5 that it doesn’t come with an optical drive while it’s not an issue for all the other notebooks in your list? And what kind of reasoning for the price of number 3 is “the laptop is well worth the price.”? What exactly makes this notebook well worth it’s price? In particular, if you compare all the six notebooks on their functionality and connectivity to the outside world, their performance and hardware package, I don’t see how the top three can compete on a price-tag level to the more economic models that you suggested.

Allow me to point out a few details that I hope will answer your question. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and the DELL XPS 13 do have optical drives and are high-end laptops. In fact, the first 3 all can be deemed high-end. 4-6 are more stripped down versions and are hence more affordable. It is also worth mentioning here that you can’t simply compare the battery time of Ultrabooks with netbooks. Similarly, there is also a difference of processor family, the first 2 are 5th-7th generation, so the processing is better, whereas number 5 runs an Intel Celeron Dual Core Processor which can’t compete in performance with I family of processors.

The Dell Latitude 5430 includes everything we like to see in a business laptop. It performs well at basic tasks from browsing the web to building Excel pivot tables, it has a wide range of ports, and it lasts more than an entire workday on its battery. The 14-inch 1080p screen looks nice enough to work on all day, and we liked using the laptop’s keyboard and trackpad. It’s also easy to repair and upgrade, so you can use it for years and years to come, even if parts fail or break. It’s a bit bulky, so if you’re prioritizing weight over repairability, check out our upgrade pick.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 has a great screen, fast processor options, nice keyboard, and a long 11-hour battery life that makes it the best of all worlds for a Windows laptop. It costs about $200 more than our top pick, and upgrades to the screen could make it pricier, but Lenovo’s top-quality hardware and reliability are hard to beat. Aside from the laptop’s processor and RAM, most other components are easy to repair.

The Framework Laptop 13 is the most repairable option in this guide, because Framework itself is built around creating laptops that can be easily upgraded and repaired. The Framework Laptop 13 is fast and has a great processor and screen, and it’s similar in build quality to laptops from major manufacturers. It does have some potential pitfalls: If Framework goes under and parts are no longer available, your laptop isn’t nearly as upgradable or repairable anymore.

Most people looking for a Windows laptop are best served by a thin and light ultrabook . An ultrabook with at least 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB solid-state drive is enough for a computer to last for a few years. Ultrabooks are also thinner, lighter, and cheaper than most business laptops but still capable of delivering solid performance and strong battery life. But those systems are difficult to open, repair, and upgrade. Generally, an ultrabook’s memory is permanently affixed to the motherboard, limiting the laptop’s future usefulness if you didn’t pay for extra memory you didn’t need at the time. Other parts, such as the battery, may be held in with glue or difficult to access without tearing the entire laptop apart. And unlike business laptops, which typically include ports for docking at a desk or connecting to a projector for presentations, ultrabooks often have a limited port selection, necessitating the use of a hub or dongle if you use external monitors or other accessories.

That’s what makes business laptops appealing, even if you’re buying a laptop for yourself and not for an actual business. To appeal to corporate IT departments, many of these laptops have memory, SSDs, and batteries that you can easily replace and usually access using nothing but a Phillips-head screwdriver. Typically you can also replace other parts that commonly wear out over time, such as the keyboard and the hinge.

Business laptops also come with lots of ports to minimize the number of dongles and adapters necessary to use thumb drives and conference-room projectors. Most of these laptops include at least one USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 port, but they also include multiple USB-A ports, microSD card readers, full-size HDMI ports, and sometimes Ethernet ports, which most other laptops gave up years ago.

Business laptops are primarily marketed to, well, businesses, which buy them in bulk at discounted rates. This makes them more expensive to buy individually than a regular laptop with similar specs. Almost every feature you could want in a nice, modern laptop—a solid-state drive, 8 GB or more of RAM, a 1080p IPS screen or touchscreen, a fingerprint sensor, or even a backlit keyboard—adds a bit more to the price than it does to an ultrabook marketed toward everyday shoppers.

Shopping for a business laptop is different from buying an ultrabook, but the most important things to look for aren’t all that different:

  • Performance: A good laptop for most people needs to have at least 8 GB of memory, a 256 GB or larger SSD, and a 12th- or 13th-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor or a 4000- or 5000-series AMD Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processor. If you need a faster processor or a dedicated GPU for gaming, photo and video editing, or other work, check out our gaming laptop and pro laptop guides.
  • A great keyboard: Business laptops are the quintessential document and spreadsheet devices, so their keys and keyboard layouts should be comfortable to use over long periods. We strongly prefer a backlight.
  • A great trackpad or pointing device: Though business laptops should be sturdy, most wouldn’t be able to survive anyone throwing them at a wall because of trackpad frustrations. We prefer Microsoft Precision Touchpads because they’re accurate and compatible with Windows 11’s multitouch trackpad gestures.
  • A 14-inch IPS screen: We prefer 14-inch business laptops because they’re more pleasant for editing large documents or spreadsheets than 13-inch laptops, yet they’re still smaller and lighter than 15-inch laptops. Most business laptops have 1080p screens that keep text and images sharp, with lots of room to fit more information, and use IPS panels (rather than TN panels ) to improve color accuracy and viewing angles; a handful have taller screens with a 1920×1280 resolution, which are just as sharp but provide more vertical pixels. Higher-resolution, 4K screens are sometimes available on these laptops, but such screens eat into battery life without adding much functional benefit for most people.
  • A wide range of ports: We prefer systems with a mix of old and new ports for maximum flexibility. Every laptop we’ve considered for this guide offers at least one USB-C port (which you can use to link external monitors, charge the laptop, and connect USB-C accessories), a USB-A port, and an HDMI port; not every system we’ve tested has an included SD or microSD card reader or an Ethernet jack, but we definitely prefer to have those. Thunderbolt 4 is optional, as are additional display outputs like DisplayPort or VGA.
  • Good battery life: We prefer at least eight hours of battery life—enough for a full 9-to-5 day or a coast-to-coast flight plus time spent waiting at the airport. Even business laptops no longer include swappable external batteries.
  • Reasonable size and weight: Business laptops are usually larger and heavier than ultrabooks, partly because they’re built to be sturdier and partly because components such as removable memory take up more space than non-upgradable parts. But every laptop we’ve tested for this guide weighs less than 4 pounds, and most models weigh less than 3.5 pounds.
  • Upgradable, repairable: Although we have considered a few thin and light ultrabook-esque laptops, the majority of models we’ve looked at for this guide are designed to be opened and serviced easily. The laptop should allow you to get at the SSD bay or slot, as well as the battery, with minimal effort; and access to at least one RAM slot and the Wi-Fi card is a plus. And the laptop should let you replace the keyboard and other parts without forcing you to take the entire thing apart or to replace a bunch of other, unrelated components.
  • A competitive (if not low) price: Business laptops are typically more expensive than budget ultrabooks or cheap laptops . Their prices fluctuate widely depending on discounts and coupon codes, but in general you should expect to spend between $1,100 and $1,500 for a good business laptop and between $1,600 and $2,000 for an outstanding one. (Those prices have crept even higher in recent years as chips have become more scarce due to supply chain issues.) Because most are designed to be upgraded, you can sometimes save money on memory and storage upgrades if you’re willing to do them yourself. And by being easier to upgrade and repair, a business laptop can give you better long-term value despite costing more up front.
  • A fingerprint reader or IR camera for speedier logins: Most business laptops offer a fingerprint reader for a nominal fee, and some offer infrared cameras that can scan your face instead. Technology improvements and Windows 11’s Windows Hello feature make logging in with your finger or face more reliable and predictable than it used to be.

The models we considered in our latest round of tests all came from Dell, HP, and Lenovo because those are the only PC makers dedicated to building and maintaining a range of computers specifically for businesses. But we have researched and tested models from Acer, Asus, Fujitsu, and Toshiba in the past.

We tested each laptop for at least two days of ordinary work—namely, loading up and switching among a couple dozen browser tabs, using Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Slack constantly, and playing music and video. This gave us a feel for each laptop’s keyboard, trackpad, screen, and general performance on common work tasks.

To test the batteries, we used a Spyder5Pro colorimeter to set each laptop’s screen backlight to 150 nits (or candelas per square meter, cd/m2) and ran a web-browsing battery test that cycled through web pages, email, Google Docs, and video. We ran the test twice on each laptop and averaged the results.

We also removed the bottom panel from each laptop and noted how many screws (and other things, if applicable) we would need to remove to access the memory, storage, and internal battery for repair or replacement. Replacing major components in a business laptop should be easier than it is for a regular ultrabook, but replacing a screen, motherboard, or keyboard yourself can still void the warranty, so we didn’t test this firsthand.

The Dell Latitude 5430 is a flexible business laptop for anyone who needs a wide variety of ports and values repairability over sleekness or weight. The laptop is sturdy and well built, especially compared with many ultrabooks, and it’s easy to open up and fix on your own if anything breaks. If you’re looking for a slimmer laptop, we recommend our upgrade pick, the Lenovo X1 Carbon.

It’s fast enough for work tasks. The Intel i5-1235U processor is best suited for basic work tasks like using Microsoft Office, browsing the web, and running a few apps at a time. This isn’t a workstation for 3D design or Photoshop, but it’s plenty fast for accounting or other enterprise software.

It has a great selection of ports. The Latitude 5430 has two USB-C ports on its left side, each capable of Thunderbolt 4. On its right side, it has two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a microSD card slot, and a headphone jack. The full-size SIM card slot on the back of the laptop is functional only if you add the optional mobile-broadband card.

Its battery lasts a full workday. The laptop fared well on our battery tests, too, lasting nine hours on average. This is a little shorter than the previous generation, but performance benchmarks showed that this generation has more powerful processors, so there’s a bit of a trade-off.

It’s incredibly repairable. If you ever need to repair or upgrade the machine, it’s simple to access all of the components of the Latitude 5430. You can easily replace the laptop’s memory, storage, battery, fan, wireless card, speakers, and display. Even the power button is its own module that you can swap out, if you’re willing to remove nearly all of the internal components, including the battery, motherboard, and inner frame.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Latitude 5430 is about a year old at this point, and we’re currently testing options with newer 13th-generation processors. If you need a laptop and this meets your needs, this is still a good one that will last for years to come.

It’s also slightly thicker than our previous pick, the HP Elitebook 840 G9, so if weight and portability are a concern, then we’d recommend our upgrade pick, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 .

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 is a powerful, lightweight computer that has a high-quality 16:10 display, and it is still slim enough to slip into a backpack or shoulder bag. It’s been a Wirecutter pick year after year because it’s simply a great laptop for office work or home use.

It’s lighter than our top pick, and it has longer battery life. The X1 Carbon weighs 2.5 pounds, which is about half a pound lighter than the Dell Latitude 5430. It’s also slightly thinner, which makes it feel considerably more sleek and portable. Despite this, it has a nearly 11-hour battery life, two hours longer than that of our top pick.

It still has both USB-C and USB-A ports. The X1 Carbon’s two USB-C ports are both Thunderbolt 4–compatible, and it also has two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.0b port, and a headphone jack. It’s missing the ethernet port from our top pick, however.

Its taller display is nice for more screen space. We liked that the X1 Carbon’s display has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is a bit taller than the 16:9 aspect ratio of the Latitude 5430 and gives you some more room on the screen. When buying the laptop, you also can choose a display with up to a 2.8K resolution, as well as a touchscreen.

The Framework Laptop 13 is simply the most repairable laptop option available. Every part of this laptop is easily maintained and repaired, and Framework’s website makes it simple to buy parts. If you want to upgrade your laptop to the next generation of processors, you can keep the same laptop chassis and all internal parts, and just swap in a new motherboard with the processor.

You can swap out the Framework’s ports at any time. One of the Framework’s selling points is its removable ports, which are small expansion cards that slot into the side of the laptop. The laptop has four swappable port options, including your classic USB-A, USB-C, and HDMI, but also Ethernet and SD card, or extra storage if you don’t need the connectivity. You can also add some extra ports, to toss in your backpack; they are much slimmer and easier to carry than cables or dongles.

A high-resolution display comes standard. The laptop’s matte display has a 2256×1504 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. This resolution, which can also be called 2K or QHD, is actually the highest-resolution screen that comes in the base configuration of any laptop we recommend in this guide.

We recommend the AMD version. Our tests have shown that the Framework Laptop 13 configured with an AMD processor has about the same performance as the Intel version, but its battery lasts about an hour longer. If you want better battery life, you can also buy an upgraded 61 Wh battery to extend its life by about 10%.

Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and Samsung are all launching new laptops powered by Qualcomm’s X-series processors, which are meant to compete with Apple’s power-efficient M-series chips. The manufacturers announced more than 15 new laptops, which will all be either powered by the Snapdragon X Plus, or the more powerful Snapdragon X Elite. We’re interested in testing the Acer Swift 14 AI , Dell Latitude 7455 and 5455 , HP EliteBook Ultra , Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 , Microsoft’s Surface Laptop , and the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge . We’ll update this guide when we’re able to test these new laptops later this summer.

We’re testing laptops for a new version of this guide, including the Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 11 , HP Elite DragonFly G4 , Asus ExpertBook B9 OLED , and the MSI Prestige 13 Evo . These laptops all have 13th-generation Intel processors and all the ports that we like to see on business laptops.

The new $1,000 Acer Swift Go 14 is a well-outfitted modern laptop, with an OLED display and the latest Intel Ultra chips, as well as the USB-A and HDMI ports we look for in laptops we test for this guide. However, it doesn’t have an ethernet jack.

Asus’ upcoming ExpertBook B5404 does have an ethernet jack, plus two USB-A ports, two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, a headphone jack, and an optional SIM slot. It also can be configured with a number of Intel’s new Ultra processors, but we don’t know when it’s being released or what kind of screen it has.

Lenovo’s ThinkBook 14 i Gen 6+ has a new port called the ThinkBook Graphics Extension that connects an external GPU with higher data transfer speeds than Thunderbolt 4. This new ThinkBook line is the first with this port, but the kicker is you’ll only be able to buy one in a package deal with an external GPU for a price north of $2,000.

For our latest round of testing, we skipped laptops that had either Intel processors older than the 12th generation or AMD Ryzen 3000-series processors. The Intel processors run fine but are a bit outdated, and those laptop models may go out of stock or disappear. The Ryzen 3000 laptops we’ve tested in the past have exhibited worse processor performance and battery life than those with 8th- or 10th-generation Intel processors or Ryzen 4000 processors, so they should be avoided.

Many manufacturers are also starting to solder RAM onto their laptops’ motherboards, both to save on costs and to make slimmer devices. The latest, fastest memory technology, called LPDDR5 RAM, is typically soldered onto the motherboard. The technique limits the repairability of these machines, and we’ve excluded many laptop lines from consideration for our top pick based on that factor, including the Lenovo ThinkPad E Series and ThinkPad T Series .

However, it’s nearly impossible to find a higher-powered laptop without soldered RAM, so we’ve eased these requirements and tested the Dell Latitude 9430 and the HP Elite Dragonfly G3 .

The Dell Latitude 9430 has all the similar pros and cons to its lower-cost Latitude 5430 sibling. It has a great port selection and nice battery life, but it’s heavy and a bit chunkier than competitors. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon simply outclassed the Latitude 9430 by offering similar ports, better performance, and two and a half hours longer battery life.

The HP Elite DragonFly G3 is a similar story, in that it’s an amped-up version of the EliteBook G9 we tested with similar strengths and weaknesses. It’s a lightweight business laptop, especially good for those who do business travel, but the X1 Carbon did better in our performance tests and has more USB ports. It’s also generally more expensive than the X1 Carbon, but if you can find it on sale for a comparable price and you want to prioritize slimness and weight over performance, then it’s still a great laptop.

Apple’s  14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro are both intended for professionals—“pro” is right in the name, after all. We have a guide to MacBooks if you prefer macOS to Windows, but the laptops currently don’t meet most of our upgradability and repairability criteria for a good business laptop. They’re difficult to repair and (usually) impossible to upgrade, and they include just a handful of identical ports, necessitating a pile of dongles. The MacBook Pro models are light, their screens are fantastic, their keyboards and trackpads are good, and Apple’s support is usually responsive and helpful, but these laptops don’t meet our requirements for this particular guide.

We also tested the Lenovo L14 (AMD) , one of the few laptops Lenovo still makes without soldered RAM. However, it had shorter battery life and a dimmer display than the competition. Its port layout was also less convenient than that of the Dell Latitude 5420 and HP EliteBook 840 G8, and it had the worst webcam by far. It still worked fine for daily use, and we like Lenovo’s keyboard and trackpad, but other models offer better performance for the money.

I’ve given a perfect star score to only one laptop during my three or so years at Laptop Mag, and that system is the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 . What makes this notebook so exceptional? Well, there are lots of expensive gaming laptops that tote killer performance, lightning-fast SSDs, bright high-refresh-rate displays, comfortable keyboards and strong speakers. However, none surpass the Zephyrus G14 in battery life, as it lasted a wild 11 hours and 32 minutes on our Laptop Mag battery test. 

Furthermore, no other gaming rig gives you all of these features for a bargain price. This laptop costs $1,449 at the time of review, which is a low price for everything it offers. Dell XPS 17

I’m a big fan of Dell ’s XPS line. The company is always finding a way to fine-tune its flagship line to keep it at the top of Windows PC fans lists. But if you know me, you know I also have a special place in my heart for big, hulking systems –– I yearn for a return to the Alienware m18. This is why I was so excited to see the Dell XPS 17. It’s not large like a gaming laptop, but it’s the biggest system in the XPS lineup, complete with a captivating 17-inch display.

Like the Dell XPS 13 and XPS 15, Dell has worked its considerable design magic on this sleek 17-inch beauty. The XPS 17 is the smallest 17-inch laptop on the market. In fact, the notebook is 48% smaller than most 15-inch systems. Despite its relatively small size, the system has a 93.7% screen-to-body ratio with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which means instead of your normal 4K panel (3840 x 2160-pixels), the XPS 17’s panel has a resolution of 3820 x 2400-pixels, making it one of the highest resolution displays on the market. And at 505 nits of brightness and covering 122% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, the XPS 17 puts competing systems to shame. 

But like its smaller brethren, the XPS 17 is more than a pretty flagship; it’s got serious performance capabilities, outmaneuvering many of the competition during our benchmark tests. Although, when your laptop has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU Max-Q GPU with a 10th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, that’s kind of a foregone conclusion. Razer Blade Stealth 13 (2020)

Even though Razer is making a concerted effort to extend its reaches beyond gaming,  sometimes you just have to return to your roots. Such is the case with the latest iteration of the Razer Blade Stealth 13. Although the laptop is still geared towards mobile professionals searching for a svelte ultraportable, Razer couldn’t help but throw a discrete graphics card into the mix this time. Is it the strongest GPU out there? No, but it’s enough for Razer to state a solid claim to “the world’s most powerful ultraportable title.” It also means that you can play a decent amount of games without whipping out the eGPU. 

This marks the first time Razer has put a discrete graphics card in the Stealth line. And while some compromises (battery life) were made in the pursuit of power, it’s the right direction for the Blade Stealth line. After all, Razer first got into the laptop game to help gamers play on the go. Overall, if you want a laptop that can work, game and everything in between, the Razer Blade Stealth 13 is a good choice. –– Sherri L. Smith

Acer Swift 3 (Ryzen AMD)

Acer packed Intel and AMD chips inside the Swift 3, but it's the AMD-equipped Swift 3 that stole the show this year. Sorry, Intel! The Swift 3, powered by AMD Ryzen 7 4700U, is a herculean performer in the mid-range laptop market. Priced at less than $650 at launch, the AMD-equipped Ryzen 7 4700 defeated the Intel-packed 13-inch MacBook Pro and Dell XPS 13 on the Geekbench 5 overall performance test. First impressions are important, so I’m glad I got my first taste of Intel’s 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors by way of the Asus ZenBook 13 UX325EA . The laptop, like most ZenBooks, is a certified showstopper in the looks department. As an added bonus, this lovely system is plenty durable as evidenced by its MIL-SPEC certification.  But Intel’s new components add some serious oomph to overall performance as well as gaming and battery life. And you get your first look at a Thunderbolt 4 port. It’s a great ambassador of all the great things consumers should expect from Tiger Lake chips.

But it isn’t all about Intel as Asus has some treats for you. The company continues to refine its dual-screen solutions, adding its NumberPad 2.0 technology to the touchpad. Is it as flashy as the massive ScreenPad 2.0 displays you’ll find on the Asus Zephyrus Duo 15 or the Zephyrus Pro Duo? No, having the ability to transform the trackpad into a digital NumPad is a nifty perk. And acknowledging that a lot of us are working remotely, the company is one of the few to give us a solid webcam by way of Asus’ new ultrathin module, which has a four-element lens. Paired with Asus’ proprietary camera algorithm, the webcam delivers sharp images and automatically corrects exposure and color balance, so there’s no excuse for a bad selfie.

What’s better than one screen? Two of course. Asus continues to push the envelope of dual-screen technology with the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 . This marks the first time that Asus brings the technology to its gaming laptops, which means the company had to make a few tweaks –– some more necessary than others.  

When you open the Duo 15, it’s initially about what you hear. The sound of a weighty sword being unsheathed accompanied by the sea of red RGB rolls across the keyboard when you open the laptop, while the secondary ScreenPad Plus rises at a 13-degree angle. Is it a tad dramatic? Sure, but nothing about the Zephyrus Duo 15 is subtle. While this isn’t the first time Asus has used ScreenPad 2.0, it is the first time it’s been outfitted with the company’s Armoury Crate software, which allows you to control the various performance modes, check system diagnostics, and launch games, among several other helpful features. You can even drag and drop the tiles to create a more personalized experience.

Two screens aside, the laptop is an undeniable powerhouse with its overclockable Intel Core i9 processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super GPU. It’s a force to be reckoned with on the gaming front and can pull its weight as a workstation, albeit a super flashy one. The Dell Latitude 7410 is a lightweight 14-inch powerhouse with a beautiful 4K display. This is a do-it-all business laptop and a content creator's friend. Simply put, the notebook works great from the moment you flip it open and it can handle anything you throw at it.

The Latitude 7410 had me rewriting the lyrics to Sisco’s Thong Song  “Ooo that display is scandalous playing 4K videos that impress, all night long, let me see your specsssssss” I’m still working on it but, seriously, with its sleek gorgeous form, warmly saturated yet color-accurate 4K display, the added pleasure of NASA-inspired cooling tech makes it a joy to use all day long while conducting business.

Acer Swift 5 (Intel 11th Gen)

The Acer Swift 5 (Intel 11th Gen, 2020) manages to first shock you with its barely-there weight that still kind of mystifies me when I use it then keeps on surprising as you watch it outperform larger laptops on speed and battery life. This was my first exposure to the Intel 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 CPU and it delivered with real-world and benchmark numbers that held off virtually all but the new MacBook Air M1. Battery life, a weakness in the previous Swift 5, flipped on its head to a strength, managing 13 hours and 37 minutes in our testing.

While the $999 to $1,299 price tag isn’t the bargain pricing of the also impressive Acer Swift 3 (AMD), the Swift 5 is nonetheless a solid value when considering the hardware. The Swift 5 has a beautiful design with bronze accents that help it to stand out among a sea of bland chassis. The improbable light chassis, at 2.3 pounds, makes the durability of the Swift 5 all the more impressive, but thanks to its magnesium-alloy construction, you won’t feel any flex. If you are looking to drop some weight from your laptop bag without sacrificing power, the Swift 5 is an easy recommendation and one of the best laptops of 2020. –– Sean Riley

A great laptop should last you a minimum of 4 years if not more. For anyone who is making PowerPoint presentations, one of the top priorities should be portability . You will need to show your work to others, usually an audience consisting of many people. For that, you will need to take it around everywhere, so it should be thin and light enough to not be a bother when carrying.

Moreover, battery life should be excellent ! You wouldn’t want your laptop dying out before you can even present. Even bringing a charger is a hassle, as it adds to the overall bulk, and you will always be in search of a socket. You also want a machine capable of multitasking, because the very nature of presentations requires you to research multiple things.

The laptop market is highly saturated and, unless you are an absolute tech nerd, you will have a hard time navigating. You will need hours upon hours of research just to land the perfect product. Even then you might succumb to the technical marketing of manufactures, which is often misleading. Luckily, I have done all the hard work and scoured the internet to find you the best possible hardware for your needs.

Preferred Specifications for PowerPoint

Before moving onto the actual laptop reviews, I will first discuss a few of the key features that must be present in all laptops. These will include details about things that are essentials and not “good to have”, this part will be included in the actual descriptions. Moreover, all these essentials will be included in our round-up as well, so stay tuned in for that.

Processing power: The processor is the component that intimidates most people, but it’s actually the easiest one to select in this case. For Microsoft PowerPoint specifically, you won’t need a top of the line processor, unless of course, your workflow involves other more intensive activities like Video Editing or Graphic Design. Getting a basic, yet modern, Intel Pentium or AMD 3-series should be more than sufficient. However, feel free to upgrade if your budget allows, or if you keep your laptop for more than the standard 3 to 4 years. 

Ram: Firstly, your RAM must at least be 8 GB. While a few years back people used to get by with 4 or even 2 GB in some extreme cases, but that time is long gone. Even mobile phones nowadays have more and I would recommend not getting anything below 8 GB. You can also move up to 16 GB if you want to future proof your device, however, it’s not necessary. Getting anything more than that will be a bit of overkill and your money can be spent better elsewhere. 

Portability: The entire appeal of a laptop is that it can be taken anywhere you want. Even larger 17-inch models can fit in a traditional backpack as long as it’s not really thick. While thicker laptops provide amazing power, unrivaled by their thin and light counterparts, but the tradeoff for an average PowerPoint user isn’t worth it. This also doesn’t mean that you should be extremely worried about the size of the laptop, as most versions these days are portable enough for more consumers, but stay away from the super girthy ones.

Battery life: Besides being portable, laptops must also be able to provide at least a decent battery life, enough to last you a whole day. Otherwise, you will spend your entire time in search of a power outlet, not to mention you will also have to bring the charger which is one more thing to carry. If you just wanted to be stuck in one place with your device, then just buy a desktop PC. 

Price: Arguably the most important factor when buying a laptop is the money you pay for it. No matter how great a product is, it’s completely useless, if you can’t afford it. Before going on a search, you must pick a price point at which you’re going to browse for products, and make sure to have a realistic expectation of what features must and must not be included. Durability is necessary as it ensures that your laptop will last for a much longer time. You don’t want to end up with a damaged laptop in case of a small accident. Moreover, as someone who is constantly presenting at a conference or school, you will always be on the move. Accidents are, therefore, more frequent compared to if you were only in one place. Hence, your machine must survive in case of an unfortunate drop. 

The ThinkPad E595 is an excellent device. It may not have fancy features; however, it is made for practical usage, optimizing your workflow, therefore, making you more productive. This is best represented by the 3.70 GHz Ryzen 3500U , a Quad-Core processor, which is an absolute powerhouse . The Ryzen 3500U already has built-in Vega 8 graphics , which is more than enough for most PowerPoint users and will also provide some light gaming functionality.

Moreover, it is paired with 8 GB of RAM and a blazing fast 256 GB M.2 SSD for a snappier experience. The best part about all this is that the RAM is upgradable to a whopping 32 GB , while an additional SATA slot is provided for future expandability. Overall, the mixture of blazing-fast components and a future upgrade path means that this laptop will provide you an excellent experience for making a presentation, not only now but also 5 years down the line . 

The display consists of 1080p IPS anti-glare panels which is excellent for everyday use and does not strain the eye if you have to sit in front of your computer for a long time. It’s not a high-tech screen but most users won’t be able to tell the difference between this and a much more expensive one. The size itself is 15.6 inches , which is right in the sweet spot of not being too small or big. If it were a bit larger, then the portability would suffer, and if it were a bit smaller than the multitasking aspect would suffer. One of the only complaints we have is the lack of backlit keys, but the screen can go as bright as 250 nits , so you won’t have any usability problems in the dark. 

The productivity aspect of the ThinkPad is best shown in the port selection. Nowadays, modern manufacturers are making their laptops extremely thin, therefore, removing many ports. While a thin laptop is necessary, but only when it doesn’t get in the way of your productivity. Luckily, the ThinkPad isn’t too thick, nor does it lack essential features. It has 4 USBs , supporting either 3.1 Gen 1 or Gen 2, as well as HDMI, SD card slot, headphone, and microphone jack as well as ethernet. Other features include, a serviceable webcam, which won’t amaze you but to be fair laptop cameras aren’t really there for perfect quality, but rather something that will look decent in a video call.

The dimensions for the laptop are 14.50 x 9.90 x 0.80 inches , which is thin, but not enough to make it flimsy, and device weighs 3.00 lbs which is pretty light weight for something as powerful . The manufacture states a battery life of 13 hours, however, that varies with use. Most users reported it to be lower than that, around 6 to 8 hours (battery life). That is still respectable and will easily last you a day with moderate usage. To conclude, we think that this is one of the best laptops out there for anyone looking to make impressive PowerPoint presentations and, it definitely gets our seal of approval.

What is upgradable is the storage, however, considering you already get 512 GB PCIe(R) NVMe(TM) M.2 SSD , which is not only plentiful but will also provide high memory speeds, making the overall experience much more responsive and smoother. It can easily handle real-world tasks, like having a dozen Chrome tabs open in the background, while using 2 or 3 different applications. 

The screen is a 14.0-inch diagonal HD, IPS, micro-edge, WLED-backlit, multitouch-enabled, edge-to-edge glass touch screen display; 80% screen to body ratio which is absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the 14 inch size is perfect for mobility. You get the option to upgrade to a Full-HD (1920 x 1080 ), which we highly recommend. One would expect a touch screen on a laptop to be unresponsive and jittery, but that’s not the case here. You get a highly smooth feel with the touch, which feels like an actual tablet or smartphone rather than a 2 in 1. The one complaint that people had was that the visibility decreases in bright conditions. While it is brighter than the previous model, at 265 nits , the coating itself is really reflective making it hard to read anything written. Considering the quality is absolutely stunning indoors, I think it is not a big problem.

The HP Pavilion comes in at 8.78 x 12.76 x 0.81 inches and weighs 3.5 pounds , which is the perfect balance between light, yet sturdy. The battery is claimed, by the manufacturer, to last for about 8 hours to 10 hours, depending on your usage. Unfortunately, users have reported a much lower time, at approximately 4 hours . Many might find this a bit lacking, but luckily the included charger can charge it from 0 to 50 percent in 30 minutes , hence it makes up for that. Overall, this is an amazing device, providing both excellent performance and many unique features, which all users will appreciate, especially when making PowerPoint presentations.

While the specifications may not seem as impressive at first glance, once you look at the price-to-performance ratio, the Vivobook is in a league of its own .

The most basic version comes with a 10th Gen Intel Core i3-1005G1 CPU with 4M Cache and up to 3.4 GHz clock speeds , while spending just a bit more will get you a 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU with 6M Cache and up to 3.6 GHz clock speeds . As you may have noticed, the higher end variant comes with the same processor as the HP Pavilion, however it costs significantly less. While the one equipped with the i3 will provide excellent performance, upgrading to the i5 would be better, however, not necessary. Other than the processor both variants are exactly the same, and most users will be satisfied with the power you get from either of these.

As for the memory and storage configuration, you get 8 GB of RAM , which is more than enough for running multiple programs. However, those desiring a bit more are given the option to upgrade to a total of 12 GB , which will be sufficient for years to come. Luckily, the storage isn’t disappointing as you are provided with a massive 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD . Furthermore, it’s also upgradeable , for those wanting to store pictures, movies or other large data files.

The display is a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) 4-way NanoEdge bezel display with a stunning 88% screen-to-body ratio . The panel itself is what we would consider average, however, great for the price, and the best panel feature is the minimal bezels. This laptop has one of the highest screen-to-body ratios out of all laptops at any price point, giving it a much more expensive look! It also means that you can accompany a larger display in a smaller form factor, which is great for people making PowerPoint presentations, as it provides great screen real estate in a more portable body. 

One of the coolest features on this laptop is its versatile keyboard. Firstly, it has a full-fledged number pad . It is also backlit and will accompany you really well when pulling all-nighters for a presentation. Moreover, the Vivobook has ASUS’s special Ergolift technology . Whenever you open your laptop, the bottom side is lifted by about 2 degrees. This gives an elevated feel, which is something you didn’t know you needed till you actually try it out for yourself. It’s similar to the tabs given in external keyboards for a more comfortable typing experience. Not only that, but it also creates a slight space between the bottom panel and the table, resulting in better thermal performance. Furthermore, if you use your laptop on your lap, it will be much more comfortable than if the feature wasn’t included.

The ports include USB 3.2 Type-C, 3 USB 3.2 Type-A, USB 2.0, HDMI; Gigabit Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), headphone jack, SD Card slot, and of course the power port . That’s not all, as the Vivobook has a ton of other features. For example, the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner near the trackpad. 

The size of this laptop is pretty similar to the previous two that we mentioned. It is exactly 14.10 x 9.10 x 0.80 inches and weighs 3.5 pounds . This particular model has a 37WHrs, 2-cell Li-ion battery. The exact expected times for the battery aren’t stated, but ASUS claims it provides an “all-day” life. Unfortunately, even this claim is exaggerated. Most heavy users claim to get 3 to 4 hours’ worth of usage, however, with careful use, you can get a bit more. Luckily, despite this flaw, you get access to fast charging. It can go from 0 to 60 percent in 49 minutes . To summarize, this laptop has a few minimal flaws, but when you consider the low-price tag and spectacular performance, you can definitely live with these.

All three of these laptops provide great features, and most people will be happy with either one of them. However, there can only be one of them, which provides the best bang for your buck.

PowerPoint itself isn’t a really difficult program to use from a hardware standpoint. Despite offering tools to make some stunning looking presentations, it isn’t really demanding on your device. Not only that, the device also manages to keep the performance on-par with the others despite this extra feature. It has everything one would expect, an addition of a stylus would make it the perfect machine for note taking and overall easier navigation, not to mention also having a good media consumption device. Everything else about this machine is perfect and it is definitely capable of being your daily laptop.

Lastly, we discussed the ASUS Vivobook Thin 15 . It provides amazing value for money with the processor it is offering and has many compelling features, like the 88 percent screen to body ratio and the ergo lift design. Not only that, it’s also a powerhouse capable of handling any task you throw at it with great ease. A mixture of all these reasons justifies the position of the Vivobook on our list.

In my opinion, the best one amongst these is the HP Pavilion 14 Convertible . It provides almost the same, if not slightly better features than the E595 although it does cost a bit more. On the other hand, the Vivobook provides great features for the price, but it has a lot of drawbacks, which we cannot ignore, but those on a strict budget can still go for it. Hence, the HP Pavilion manages to beat out all the other options, by having the perfect balance of an affordable price tag and usability functions , and is therefore my top pick and you should certainly consider it when making your decision as well.

Lenovo Yoga C940

Yes, yes, I know, the C940 was announced in 2019 , but I reviewed it in March so I'm including it, because it's one of my favorites that I've used this year. Though it's not a huge leap over the Yoga C930, its improvements make it a pleasure to use. I also regularly recommend its streamlined cousin, the Yoga C740 , because it's just a better deal if you want premium design but not necessarily high-end extras.

In case you want to change the design pattern of a particular slide, just click on the slide you want to change the design of.  Then, you can right-click on the design you want to select out of it and hit “Apply”.  This will change the design of that particular slide without disturbing the rest of the slides.

Click to add a title page

Just click on the box with the text “click to add title” and enter the title of your presentation. Next, you can also enter the subtitle or your name in the text box as shown in the figure above. Once you are done, go to the toolbar option located at the top there and change the colour, title font style, size etc as per as you wish.

Add new slide- Powerpoint

You can add a slide by right-clicking on the area where your first slide is and hit “New Slide”. Also, you can go to the toolbar at the top and hit a new slide.

Add graphics, pictures and charts

Go to the insert tab at the top and add chart, graphics or pictures to your presentation. Once you are done with these, you can also add borders to your slides by going to the Format tab of the window.

Add transitions to presentations

Go to the Animations option shown in the figure above to add transitions to your presentation. You can select from the bunch of transitions options from there.

Rearrange slides

Once you are done with all the slides, you can change the orders in which they are sequenced. Go to the outline option located. There you can find all the current slides and thus can drag and rearrange according to your choice.

Slideshow is complete

At last, hit the slide show button from the top and click on ‘From Beginning’. You can now see the presentation presenting! Bingo!

These days, Microsoft is all about enhancing your workflow with handy productivity-focused software and accessories, and its new Presenter+ remote embodies that philosophy very much so. I love gadgets are that designed for specific use cases, and while it’s certainly not the first of its kind, the Presenter+ is elegant, sleek, and easy to set up and use.

I've been using the Presenter+ for a little over two weeks to conduct presentations and enhance Teams meetings. Here's my review!

Microsoft Presenter+: Price & Availability

The Microsoft Presenter+ is available directly from the Microsoft Store or Amazon and has a retail price of $80. Here are the specs of the product:

Microsoft Presenter+: Design

Microsoft Presenter+

The Presenter+ features a clean, elegant design that looks good on your desk and discreet in your hand. It's small, lightweight, and feels great to hold thanks to its premium smooth plastic enclosure. The buttons are tactile and easy to press and have a satisfying click to them. 

The buttons themselves consist of a large circular mute button at the top, followed by two smaller left and right navigation buttons below it, a pill-shaped "presenting laser" button below those, and a large circular Teams button at the bottom. On the back are a power toggle and Bluetooth pair button.

The back of the remote is covered in a slightly grippy texture, which makes it slightly easier to hold and reduces its ability to slide around on your desk when not in the charging dock. There's also a small Microsoft logo on the back, just below an indented area to rest your finger in as you hold the device.

On the bottom is a USB-C port flanked by two silver prongs, used for charging with the included charging dock. The charging dock itself is a nice inclusion, connected to a USB-A cable that plugs into your computer to supply power. The USB-C port on the remote can also be used for charging.

The Presenter+ includes several different features and modes, all designed to enhance your experience when presenting PowerPoint presentations or partaking in Teams meetings. We'll start with the presentation features, which unsurprisingly are a highlight for this remote.

This remote includes a built-in virtual laser function, which can be used to point at and highlight areas of a screen being used to present content. The virtual laser can be used anywhere, in any app by simply holding the laser button and pointing at your screen. 

It uses a built-in gyroscope to track the location of the remote, and relatively accurately display the laser where you'd expect it to be. It works very similarly to how LG's Magic Remote works on its TVs, with the ability to point the remote at the screen and use it as a mouse.

The laser button, when paired with the navigation buttons above it, makes for an all-in-one solution for presenting PowerPoint slides on a stage, or even virtually in Microsoft Teams. The only frustrating thing about the laser pointer is that you can't actually click on things with it. Within Windows, you can use it to highlight things, but if you want to click OK on a prompt, you can't. 

Microsoft Presenter+

The remote can also be used as a microphone toggle with the dedicated mute button along the top. This is great for scenarios where you might find yourself walking around a small office while in a meeting, with other colleagues interrupting you in person every so often. 

Now, there's no microphone built-in to the remote, so you can't use it as an on-the-go toggle mic, but the mute button will act as a toggle for whatever mic is built-in to the device you have it connected to. 

Lastly, the Presenter+ features a vibration motor for tactile signals, which buzz when a Teams meeting starts, you mute or unmute your mic, when the battery is low, and even when you raise and lower your hand. Yes, the remote also functions as a way of raising your hand virtually in Teams meetings. Pretty cool. 

Microsoft Presenter+: Customization

Many of the functions and features of the Presenter+ remote can be configured, which means you can dial in how you want to use the remote to your personal taste. For example, you can choose to use the microphone button as a toggle, switching between muted and unmuted states with a click, or use it as a push-to-talk button, only unmuting the mic when the button is held down.

The laser feature can also be customized, including the ability to change the size and color of the laser pointer itself. You can also configure the sensitivity of the gyro, which is great if you find the remote isn't doing a good job of tracking the laser pointer on the screen out of the box.

You can even customize the strength of the tactility motor, increasing or decreasing its strength to suit your preference. You can also turn on and off which features present tactile signals, so if you didn't want it to vibrate when you mute or unmute your mic, you can turn that off. 

All of these features can be customized using Microsoft's well-put-together Accessory Center app, which is automatically installed when you pair the remote to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC for the first time. The app also includes the ability to "find my remote" by buzzing the vibration motor inside it if you ever lose it. 

Microsoft Presenter+: Competition

Logitech R400 Clicker

There are countless clicker devices out there on the market that allow you to control a PowerPoint presentation, and some of them even have actual laser point pointers built in. Peripherals such as the Logitech Presenter R400 , which uses its own wireless receiver for functionality, can be had for just $32. But it doesn't come with any customization software or integration with Microsoft Teams.

There's also the DinoFire Wireless Presenter , which just like the Logitech, uses its own RF receiver for functionality, and a built-in level 2 laser. But again, no Microsoft Teams integration. And that's going to be the big differentiator between other clickers and the Microsoft Presenter+.

The Microsoft Presenter+ offers a virtual laser, in-depth Microsoft Teams integration, a wide array of customizable settings, and even a haptic motor. You're not going to find those things on other clickers on the market.

Microsoft Presenter+ Should you buy

The Microsoft Presenter+ is an excellent peripheral, but only if you find yourself presenting PowerPoint presentations on a regular basis. For everyone else, I don't think it's a necessary investment, as it's pretty easy to navigate a PowerPoint slide without a dedicated accessory.

With that said, the Presenter+ is really only for the people who want or need to look professional on a stage or virtually. They won't want to be seen walking back to a laptop on the corner of the stage to advance to the next slide. They want to stay in their flow and present the next slide as they talk to their audience. 

If that's you, then you simply can't go wrong with the Presenter+. The other integrations with Teams are a nice addition, such as raising the remote to raise your hand in the meeting and using the mic button as a toggle.

When it comes to the best rated work laptops, you can't go wrong with a ThinkPad. Any ThinkPad, really. They're sturdy laptops, built to last years, with the best keyboards you'll find on pretty much any laptop (despite Lenovo changing the design and shortening the key-travel in the bid for thinner designs). If you don't mind aging specs and your workloads are light, even older models still pack a punch.  

For an excellent modern model, we love the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 8. It might not be much to look at - few great laptops for business are. We were impressed by its high-quality build and durability. This is the kind of laptop that will stick with you through thick and thin. And, beyond that durability, it’s quite versatile as well since it has that 2-in-1 form factor. 

Even the basics are done well. The keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on, the trackpad is accurate and responsive, and it has all the ports a businessperson on-the-go could want. Plus, it comes with a stylus.

The 16:10 screen is a joy to work on and has more than enough power for everyday productivity making this an ideal laptop for business. Of course, it won’t work for niche purposes like photo or video editing as it doesn’t have that kind of power. And, it’s expensive, considering that it’s not high-powered or stuffed with a bunch of extra features. But, it’s perfect where it needs to be.

Best budget business laptop

Acer Travelmate P4 TMP414-51

2. Acer Travelmate P4

There are a lot of compromises with the Acer Travelmate P4. When testing, we found that some parts, particularly the SSD, had some issues that could prove frustrating. And, it’s a mostly plastic affair inside that could affect its durability, though it at least keeps the weight down. Yet, for all its faults, this laptop is worth consideration for those that are on a budget.

To start, it’s much more affordable than a lot of the competition while offering enough power for most people to get through their work without issue. The battery life is also pretty good, providing enough juice to last through a whole work day and then some. And, the included Thunderbolt port gives some flexibility when using this portable with other peripherals such as an external monitor.

One of the biggest surprises for us with the Acer Travelmate P4 is the fact that it’s easy to upgrade. Since the parts aren’t soldered in, once you’re able to get inside, it’s quick work to put in a new SSD or RAM to really make the most of this laptop.

All these factors, especially the price, battery life, and upgradability, make this an ideal option for someone who needs a business notebook but has limited funds.

Best MacBook for business

3. apple macbook air 15-inch (2023).

MacBook Pro laptops are great laptops for work, but if you want a lightweight, portable option, check out the MacBook Air. It is a bit of an anomaly when compared to the rest of Apple’s options. It’s bigger than the 13-inch version yet is essentially the same inside, starting with the same M2 chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD. But, some people just want something a little less cramped than a 13-inch screen when getting through the workday and this laptop is for them.

Even though it doesn’t separate itself from its little brother performance-wise, we were still very impressed. After all, Apple has managed to squeeze some good performance out of those specs. On top of that, the larger 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display is gorgeous to look at, offering a crisp 2880 x 1864 resolution with wide P3 color coverage that makes it perfect for getting some photo editing done.

While this is a larger laptop, its slim design still makes this Apple laptop fairly portable, even if it’s not quite as easy to carry around as its little brother. And, since it sports those same internals, it comes with a fairly generous price tag, at least by Apple standards. So, if you want to stay in the Apple ecosystem for work and don’t want to spend the money on one of the Pro models, this 15-inch MacBook Air may be the ideal option for you.

Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED

4. Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED

The ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED is a step forward in the next generation of laptops thanks to its unique two-screen setup. Taking Apple’s controversial touch bar concept and adding a larger second screen right above the keyboard, this Asus laptop manages to make its unique setup indispensable for getting work done.

In fact, we were impressed by how versatile that second screen was. Not only is it angled for easy viewing, but it has touch capability so we were able to turn it into a gigantic touchpad when necessary. That would be just a gimmick if it weren’t for the quality of the main OLED display, which is HDR capable and has the kind of color coverage that photographers need when editing their photos.

Beyond the two displays, we found the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED to have more than enough power to get through most productivity and creative work, thanks to the robust GPU it came with.

Of course, the battery life is not the best considering this laptop is trying to power two screens. And, the trackpad is a little wonky with its strange placement off to the side. Outside of that, this is a stellar laptop with a premium feel and, of course, a unique setup that’s great for complicated workflows like those that creatives have to deal with.

Best 2-in-1 laptop for business

5. Lenovo Yoga Book 9i

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i may just be the most elegant, most effectively designed dual-screen laptop we've ever tested. It boasts two displays, but it manages to pull that off while still maintaining that beautiful, thin and lightweight form factor that Lenovo is now known for. 

It certainly makes that dual-screen format so incredibly seamless to use with several special functionalities, keyboard shortcuts, and very responsive touchscreen capabilities. Not to mention that it's an absolute game-changer when it comes to multitasking.

What's more, the Intel Core i7-1355U powering it is specifically designed for ultra-thin portables, allowing it to stay relatively cool despite not having a lot of breathing room and to last an entire work day. It has proven to be very capable during testing, running multiple apps and multiple browser tabs without experiencing any slowdowns. It's also shown during testing that it's capable enough to perform some light hi-res photo editing on Lightroom and Photoshop .

We also appreciate the comfortable keyboard and mouse that comes included in the box as they offer a great alternative if interfacing with a virtual keyboard and a virtual trackpad is taking a while to get used to. It's a little expensive, and there's only one configuration available at the time of writing, but it's more than a worthy investment, especially if you're the type who regularly multitasks like we do.

Best rugged business laptop

Getac B360 Pro (2023 edition)

6. Getac B360 Pro (2023)

Business professionals who spend a lot of time out on the field need a more robust laptop that can handle such things as inclement weather, hard knocks and drops, and dirt and dust. And for such a need, we vote the Getac B360 Pro (2023), a solid portable (if you can call it that) that built to take the hardest knocks and the worst environments and can pretty much handle anything.

The B360 Pro is sold as military-grade and mission-ready, with an outer shell that can withstand being dropped six feet and temperatures from -29°C to +63°C (-20°F to 145°F). It also has MIL-STD-810H, MIL-STD-461G and IP66 certifications.

We can't claim that this is the perfect laptop. The port layout could have been better, and it needs a better Gen 4 NVMe drive installed. But it's a highly customisable platform that comes with two hot-swap replaceable batteries as standard and can charge up to eight batteries. It also has a wide selection of accessories to mount it to a vehicle or dock it in the office. 

That's not to mention impressive performance and battery life that can keep up. Looking at the GTX 1650's speed in our 3DMark, GeekBench OpenCL and PCMark10 tests, the only machine we’ve seen recently that can beat the B360 Pro is the Dell Precision 5470 with its more powerful RTX A1000 discrete video.

Dell Latitude 9440

7. Dell Latitude 9440 2-in-1

The Dell Latitude line-up is vast - with corporate, enterprise, and education laptops padding out the market. They're more than powerful enough for a daily driver in the office, home, or on-the-go, and in our experience the keyboards are generally fine for long hours, even if they don't quite match the natural comfort of the ThinkPad keys. 

The 2-in-1 Dell Latitude 9440 2-in-1 may be the best value laptop we've tested. It hits that sweet spot between design, functionality, and features - so much so it's nearly perfect in our book. 

The features, of course, help justify that high price tag. There's the Haptic Collaboration touchpad, multi-connection network technology, and an expansive screen that gives users a lot more screen real estate. 

What's remarkably impressive part of this laptop is that it can actively be connected to two networks at once and switch between them as needed for the best connection. And this feature has proven to be impressive during testing, especially for power business users who take vital calls and can't risk losing connection.

But once you take this out for a spin, you'll realize as well that its phenomenal performance helps. It certainly hit all our marks in what to expect from a professional business laptop on test, and we found its battery life just as impressive.

Best modular business laptop

Framework Laptop 13 Ryzen 7040 Series

8. Framework Laptop 13 7040 Series

Framework offers a unique approach to Laptops where modularity is paramount, and the customer can easily specify what they want to see in external ports. What’s fascinating about this concept isn’t that the module ergonomics of the Laptop 13 aren’t amazingly complicated or revolutionary. Instead, modularity is also focused on the customer's needs, not merely as a means for making cheaper laptops.

The Ryzen 7040 Series is a sub-set of the Laptop 13 models that uses the latest Zen mobile processors, providing impressive processing power and efficiency for longer battery life. Framework offers three SKUs, or customers can go with a DIY option to define a laptop that is personal to them.

All the internal parts are also modular, not just the external ports, and that should make these machines easy to service and fix should they have a problem. The downside to this increased flexibility is that Framework only offers a single year of warranty, and the cost of these machines is slightly above what the exact specifications would cost in a machine that wasn’t modular.

But for those who want a beautifully engineered laptop where the ports can be easily changed as needed, there aren’t many other options available today.

Best business laptop for travelers

9. HP Dragonfly G4

“Brilliant - and not just for business” is how we described the HP Dragonfly G4 when we took this laptop out for a spin. The perfect laptop may not exist, but in our view, the mighty HP Dragonfly G4 sure comes pretty damn close. 

This one's a bit of a rarity in the world of business laptops - it looks and feels neither business-y or bulky. We absolutely love the design and build, which is robust, lightweight, and seemingly tailored for travel or hybrid working. During our review, we travelled around Europe for a month with the Dragonfly G4. It not only survived – it thrived.  And the battery easily held an all-day charge. During our tests, it hit an average 12 hours and 44 minutes. Not quite as long as a MacBook Pro, but great for everyday users.

Performance is equally impressive. Even opening an unhealthy number of tabs in Chrome, running multiple apps, and batch-editing images in Photoshop and Lightroom, slow-downs were non-existent. The screen is ideal for photo editing, as it happens. A stunning 13-inch 1280p display boasting 391 nits and 113.3% sRGB coverage, and an average Delta-E color accuracy of 0.14 (these numbers are based on our benchmark results). However, we were disappointed to see the weak 80.2% DCI-P3 coverage means it’s not the best for video editing.

Specific capabilities to consider when purchasing a fleet of PCs will depend on the type of business and the role and responsibilities of employees, but below are a few broad areas to prioritize:

  • Collaboration :  With the growth of hybrid work, employees need the capabilities to collaborate and connect from anywhere. Business workers rely on best-in-class video and audio features for frequent conference calls. Look for a minimum FHD camera for quality picture, top firing speakers for improved sound, and Wi-Fi 6E and 5G for a variety of connectivity options.
  • Design :  Workers need mobile and flexible form factors for working on-the-go. Business laptops should ideally be lightweight and small, but also include a 16:10 aspect ratio display for an optimal front of screen experience. Plus, they should be made with durable and premium materials built to last.
  • Performance :  Performance is a given for maximum productivity. Choose business laptops equipped with the latest generation of processors available to run applications smoothly when multi-tasking and preserve battery life. CPU and GPU specifics, such as discrete graphics, will depend on the demands of a worker’s role. Finally, look for systems with a minimum of 16GB of dual-channel memory and at least 512GB of SSD drive space.
  • Security and support:  It’s not only about the end user experience. IT departments need enterprise-level hardware/firmware and software security features to prevent, detect and respond to threats wherever they occur. Plus, IT needs reliable service and support options for their fleet of PCs. Depending on the size of the business, companies might consider an all-in-one IT support option that handles all elements of hardware management, or choose a flexible offering that helps simplify deploying the latest PCs.

There are significant design and hardware differences between consumer and business laptops. In most cases, business models are made with more durable materials and construction to withstand the rigors of travel and toting the laptop to and from the office. This means they’re typically built with more metal in the chassis as compared to plastic that’s often used in consumer models. Many are MIL-STD 810H-certified with spill-resistant keyboards and touchpads to protect internal components from liquids. Shock-resistant features and semi-ruggedized designs help protect them from short drops. Business laptops focus on durability, reliability, performance and life span, which often means a long battery life and the ability to upgrade the laptop over time. Consumer laptops have more focus on style and value for today’s computing needs.

Another key difference is in the software installed on the systems. Business laptops will come with Windows 11 Pro vs. Windows 11 Home. Windows 11 Pro has many features supporting business management and deployment, which aren’t necessary for consumer computers. These laptops will typically have other manageability features built-in to aid IT departments in diagnosing, updating systems remotely and deploying to their workforce. In contrast, consumer laptops are often loaded with entertainment-focused applications for social media, gaming and digital hobbies that business workers do not need and IT departments may see as security risks. Simplifying the software pre-load for large quantities of business laptops purchased in bulk eases setup, deployment and management of these laptops.

In addition, Windows 11 Pro provides extra security features through hardware-based security, such as TPM 2.0, virtualization-based security (VBM) and hypervisor protected code integrity (HVCI).  Software-based security adds advanced encryption, robust network and system security and intelligent safeguards, which improve over time against ever-evolving threats. Laptops designed for business may also come with sensors that detect people based on range and movement. These laptops can lock the screen when the user steps away and also blur the screen to off-angle viewing to prevent someone seeing the screen’s content over a user’s shoulder.

Another factor differentiating business models is the warranty. Consumer laptops typically have a one-year warranty, while commercial warranties may last up to three years and cover on-site service from a technician and the provision of spare parts.

Finally, business laptops are more conservative in style and color in comparison to consumer versions, to keep a low profile and blend in commercial settings. Consumer models, particularly those designed for gaming, may come in bright colors and with multi-colored RGB keyboards.

In conclusion, there are significant differences between consumer and business laptops. While each type of laptop serves its purpose, it is important to consider needs and priorities before making a purchase. Whether you are looking for advanced security features or budget-friendly options, there is a laptop on the market to meet your needs.

How to choose the best business laptops

Finding the best laptop for you is all about deciding what you consider most important and focusing on those needs before considering other requirements. If you work in an office, battery life might not be critical, but it might be vital for those working away from a desk.

Laptop makers offer many devices, each aimed at a specific user and usage profile. Therefore it's essential to consider the role this system will play in the office and what it needs to support that. You should also check if your company has a preferred operating system - many like to use Windows, but some of the best MacBook Pro laptops are perfect for business use.

Here are some of the aspects that we consider the most important.

Performance

The performance available from a modern laptop can be awe-inspiring. Many more expensive models have potent processors, NVMe storage, and discrete GPUs.

Typically, cheap machines come with an Intel Celeron or Core i3 class processor, and they're only suitable for relatively light office tasks. Above them are devices that use the Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, and these are the workhorses that can cope with most tasks by having lots of processing cores and multi-threaded processors. And on the top rung are the Intel Core-7 and Core-i9 mobile processors and the AMD Ryzen 7 class CPUs. These powerhouse systems can be used for very intensive tasks often allocated to desktop computers, and they can come with discrete GPU technology allowing them to play games and be used with the best 3D modeling software .

For integrated GPUs, the lesser machines have the old Intel UHD Graphics module, and in newer Intel chips, this has been supplanted by the Iris Xe GPU. Conversely, AMD systems have either the older Radeon Graphics or, the better Radeon 680M.

The discrete GPU options are usually based around either Nvidia RTX or AMD RX technology, with various performance tiers available. What's important to understand is that mobile GPUs aren't comparable to desktop equivalents. Therefore, don't expect an Nvidia RTX 3060 mobile GPU to perform like that same designation in a PCIe card for a desktop system.

Because of power limitations and heat generation, mobile GPUs tend to be cut down from the desktop regarding shaders, memory buses, and clock speeds.

Battery Life

The extent of battery life depends on several factors, not least the battery capacity and how efficiently the system uses the stored power.

While having a bigger battery is suitable for how long it will last without mains power, it tends to increase the machine's weight, and depending on the charger, it can take longer to recharge.

One of the downsides of more powerful processors is that they will consume more power, and the same is true for discrete GPUs over integrated, high-performance NVMe drives and exceptionally bright displays.

How this translates into the working life of batteries isn't easy to calculate. Still, the difference between a machine using power-saving mode with reduced screen brightness and another using performance settings with an intensive task can be substantial.

The better machines running standard office tasks or playing YouTube videos can last longer than ten hours, and the worst under four.

It is worth pointing out that the newest technology, i.e., Intel 13th Gen and AMD Ryzen 7000 processors, are much more power efficient than previous technologies. Older tech might be cheaper, but it won't last as long on battery, doing the same jobs as something with more modern silicon, as a rule.

Connectivity

Having plenty of port selection is critical if you're hooking up a lot of different devices, from the best business monitors to the best office keyboards . However, This aspect is essential for those considering any of the best Ultrabooks and 2-in-1 designs especially often have limited external ports.

The solution to the limited port selection is to use a docking station. The very best laptop docking stations provide both port extensions and simultaneously charge a business laptop - ideal when working on-the-go.

In our experience, Thunderbolt is best, but the laptop must have at least one of these versatile ports to connect both power and data over a single connection. Achieving similar functionality over USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-C is possible, but the bandwidth is less. That reduction impacts the flexibility, as the number of peripherals it can handle and the number of downstream ports is less.

If you can afford a machine with a Thunderbolt port(s) and a Thunderbolt docking station, then whatever other ports are on that laptop are largely unimportant.

One point about docking stations: they are usually rated for the watts they can deliver to an attached laptop, i.e., 65W or 83W. Some of the larger mobile workstation designs can draw up to 100W or more, and while these will charge on a docking station that can deliver 65W, it will take longer to charge fully.

Network connections are often Wi-Fi, but some machines have an Ethernet adapter. However, if you have USB 3.2, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an inexpensive but valuable accessory.

As for Wi-Fi, some cheaper machines have Wi-Fi 5, but the better ones have Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. If you intend to connect over Wi-Fi, it might be helpful to know the Wi-Fi routers' technology and a specific system design to work best with them.

Survivability

It might seem an obvious thing to mention, but laptops get broken every day. They fail due to a manufacturing mistake, the owner being clumsy, unexpected vehicle accidents, and flood damage. The number of ways they can cease to be useful is a remarkably long list.

Cheaper machines tend to use an aluminum frame with plastic panels attached that aren't best suited to survive a drop or being doused with hot coffee, not least being outside in the rain. Higher-end machines tend to use more metal, making them intrinsically more likely to handle some abuse.

How we test the best business laptops

Before we get to benchmarks and their ilk, when testing the best business laptops we usually go through a familiarisation protocol. This is where we’ll use the machine for a few days for general tasks to establish if it is all working as intended and highlight any potential issues that the designers overlooked.

During this phase, we’ve seen many problems, like hinges that cover up ports or trackpads unsuitable for adult-sized hands. Those issues are less common since many designs are derivatives of previous models with new motherboards rather than entirely new hardware.

After testing the trackpad and keyboard, we usually remove the back of the machine to see inside the case unless we know a sticker is denying us access to the inside. In that scenario, it is usually possible to get a manual that reveals what we’d see, and that is crucial for us to determine if the laptop can be user upgraded, stickers or not.

Many of the thinner Ultrabook and 2-in-1 models are now surface mounting memory, stopping that from being upgraded by the owner. But even those tend to have an M.2 slot for the NVMe drive that allows larger enterprises to be used. For those that have run the same system for many years, it might also be helpful to see what the spec of the battery pack is for that to be potentially replaced when it becomes worn out.

After we’ve done that investigation and put the machine back in one piece, we begin our testing protocol, where we go through a selection of benchmarks that test different aspects of the hardware. These benchmarks include many synthetic tests like 3DMark, PCMark10, GeekBench, CineBench23, CPU-Z, CrystalDiskMark 8.04, and other real-world tools.

These give a good oversight on single and multi-core processing, GPU performance, NVMe speed, and battery life.

The battery test is part of PCMark10 that requires the screen to be dimmed to 120 nits and the performance setting of the machine put into a power-saving mode (but with the screen always active). The screen brightness is confirmed with the DataColor calibrator, and the test runs until the battery from total hits 20% of its capacity. From this test, it is possible to provide a ballpark time for how long a laptop will last without mains power.

Exactly how it performs will depend on how it is used and how demanding those tasks are. Still, the calculated time should reveal if a fully working day on battery power is possible.

All this data is then cross-checked with that collected from other testing sessions to establish where the machine fits into our bigger picture, specifically against other hardware that uses the same processor platform or against a previous model in the same series.

If you need to elevate and move a projector or laptop around constantly, 3M’s stand is by far your best choice.

It weighs just five pounds, so you can easily carry it from place to place, and its single shelf has an impressive amount of adjustability: it can be swiveled 360 degrees, and tilted between -40 and 40 degrees.

The downside is that this stand’s height-adjustment is limited to between one and five inches. That makes it the right pick for a boardroom projector, or if you prefer to elevate your laptop next to an external monitor, but not for giving a lecture. You may not hit these limitations, though, and if you need a short stand, this is the one we recommend.

Pros:  Extremely small, and very adjustable given its size.

PowerPoint 2021 for Windows lets you create compelling content with the addition of features including co-authoring, Ink Replay, improved slide show recording, new stock media from the Office Premium Creative Content collection and new Draw tab additions such as Point Eraser, Ruler, and Lasso.

If you're upgrading to PowerPoint 2021 for Windows from PowerPoint 2019 for Windows, you'll still have all the features you're used to—and you'll notice a few new ones as well!

Note:  Some features listed below are not included in PowerPoint LTSC 2021 for commercial customers. Each of those features is noted if it does not apply to PowerPoint LTSC 2021 for commercial customers.

Co-authoring

You and your colleagues can open and work on the same PowerPoint presentation. This is called co-authoring. When you co-author, you can see each other's changes quickly — in a matter of seconds.

Note : Co-authoring is not available in PowerPoint LTSC 2021.
